He is a nice guy and doesn't want you to fail but honestly, he can't teach. There are a lot of things to bring up your grade and yo should be fine if you have had chemistry before. However, if you haven't, you should take Kramer because you will learn a lot more. Textbook is useless.
DO NOT TAKE THE 8am LECTURE, EVER! you will fall asleep, just like I did, every time. I was even interested in chem. 8am is just too early for any class, esp a lecture with 200 students in comfy chairs. I had to teach myself due to my inability to stay awake which didnt turn out too well. Tests are hard! He is a nice guy though.
If u ever have trouble sleeping.go to his 8 am class and you sleep like a baby. You defiantly need a background of chem..Must study for exams.Grade estimator is a good indicator of grades.go to office hours.a really nice guy.reminds me of Santa Claus.labs are very tedious, hope for a good TA or ur screwed.workshops and skillbuilders are good points
he's tough, but knows what he's talking about. very nice guy and willing to help - go to office hours. you def need to study a LOT for tests - they're hard. do chem skill builder to study and for points.
Hard. Listen to his lectures and make sure you pay attention. When tests come, study hard. Go to his office hours, it really helps. As hard as his class is, it's not impossible though. Study a lot for the tests. Chem is a hard subject anyway!
He knows his stuff but has MAJOR difficulties getting it across to the class. all i ever did was sleep in his class. if you have chem background and need extra sleep take his class. if you want to be babied and annoyed choose kramer. wingrave tests are really hard and i got a 4 on the AP chem exam. so far kramer is easier
Terrible, that's all i can say. He's Awful
He was good but not for me. I could never pass the exams.
great guy! if you want to actually learn, definitely sit in the front of the lecture hall. boring lecture, hard tests, but a lot of curves to bring up your grade
Hard subject, but he does his best to teach it. Go to class and take notes or you will be screwed. He's a nice guy but has a really soothing voice, definitely drink coffee before class. He curves A LOT, it's very hard to fail this class.
I had him for 103 and 104 and got an A in both. He is very hard and his lectures are boring, but if are willing to put in the study time and effort an A is doable. labs pull up the grades alot, and dont buy a textbook. PS, dont believe what ppl tell you, Wingrave does not curve anything, your grade is what you get, but he has a huge grading scale.
Jimmy Wingrave is basically the man. Everything he does is made of pure awesome. He is hilarious and does his best to keep you paying attention. The class is hard but doable, just go to class and pay attention. Tests are hard, make sure to study weeks in advance. Easy to get a C. It is all worth it though because Wingrave is the coolest man alive.
Prof. Wingrave is a great professor. He is really helpful and wants to see all of his students do well. He likes to teach 8am classes though, and chemistry is a very hard subject. It sucks, but you have to go to every single lecture to learn it all. Easy to get a C, nearly impossible to get an A.
Wingrave is a jolly old man. He probably could teach you chemistry, but nobody can get through a class without sleeping. He is ok at teaching. Everyone pretty much fails the exams, but you can get about half your points back if you go to his office hours. Its just a class you got to get through and forget about.
UGH i hate chemistry now. i just get sick thinking about tuesdays and thursdays where i have to spend an hour and fifteen minutes with the guy. He doesn't move from his damn projector and he's so monotone i just wanna kill myself. His tests are hard, however i failed every exam and got a C in the class..do NOT take this class at 8am :(
Great professor, boring material with interesting tidbits interspersed. Wants students to succeed, and teaches the class knowing that most aren't chem majors. Do yourself a favor and visit him during office hours, he's incredibly enthusiastic and will help ya with anything you need.
great if you fail all the tests because you can still get a C, but totally unfair to people who do well on the exams. I aced exams but still ended up with a B+, my friends failed exams and got Cs. Hm how unfair can you be? Take Kramer.
BORING! Take Kramer instead. She is more up-to-date with power point presentations instead of overheads. But Wingrave does have all the notes down which is nice cause you don't have to copy them, but it aids in you falling asleep. Especially if its at 8am. Take Kramer if you can!
the exams are almost impossible and his class is monotonous. I got a B- and only showed up to class for the last 15 minutes for clicker quizzes. DO WELL ON SKILL BUILDERS!!! not only do you get points for doing well but it is the only thing that will help you for exams
Very boring and hard to comprehend
This is going to be a very hard class. Start studying right away. He does not help students with questions so go to the tutoring sessions.
I really liked Professor Wingrave. I thought his tests were very reasonable. He also dropped the lowest, which helped me out sooo much. He's a nice guy and has a funny little joke here and there. He does tons of helpful examples. If you want to do well, come to lectures and don't sit in the back of the lecture hall and fall asleep!
VERY BORING! he can get himself confused often, making it somewhat hard to understand the material right away. the lab write ups are terrible, but good grade boosters if you do them well
I LOVE POP-POP WINGRAVE! He has hilarious jokes!!! His suspenders are really cool too. Oh, and about the class- its definitely not an easy course- you have to do a lot of outside of class studying to do well. But overall, Pop-Pop Wingrave is the best!
Let's be fair to poppa jimmy wins... He's a nice guy, and he tries really hard to be interesting. He's a lost cause though, a hella boring guy who complicates and already complicated subject. Get the guide to survivng chemistry, read it over and over, do workshop problems to prep for tests. Avoid the lecture manual, its all over the place
Bottom line jimmy is boring, his lect notes usually are overcomplicated and its really hard to follow. The good news is you dont need to waste money on the textbook cuz u wont need it. He tries to be funny but he fails.
Wingrave is a hella nice guy. He really does want you to pass. Don't bother buying the book. He's overly skilled in chemistry which makes it difficult for him to break the subject down the the level of most in his class. Unfortunatley, if you want a good grade you'll have to spend a lot of time studying.
Papa Win is boring. He read right out of the lecture notes. He does tell some funny jokes to try and keep you up at 8am, but i still fell asleep. However his lecture manual is easy to understand sometimes. Mike Rosens sessions are a MUST ATTEND if you are a snoozer like me.
Wingrave is a decent guy. He tries to make the class interesting by telling little puns but overall the class is really boring and hard to understand. DON'T buy the textbook. You will never use it. Buy the Guide to Surviving Chemistry, it makes things soo much easier. The lecture manual is hard to understand, very sporadic. Tests are hard.
Wingrave is a highly qualified chemist and professor, however the course is nearly impossible to teach so that you can understand all the material, just way too much material for an intro class. Textbook wasn't necessary. To be successful you need to STUDY and be attentive in class, labs, and discussion. DO NOT take @8am. Hard to ace/Hard to fail.
Prof Wingrave is a great teacher. He def wants you to pass and he makes some joke to make the class a little interesting. Low-down is,chem is dry, so its not his fault because i know there is noone who can maek interesting any way. He's the best. Also, textbooks are def unnecessary
WINGRAVE is the man. He always give you extra points on your exam for just trying if you go back for regrading. HIGHLY RECOMMEND over Kramer. Although 8am is really early, its worth it. You pretty much guaranteed a C. Try to get the TUES THURS 8am. GREAT teacher and, actually talk to him, you'll see his loves chemistry and his students.
Class is a little boring. It's nearly impossible to not get a C (he gives so many free points just for going to work shop and clicker points). He skips around a lot and can be unorganized so attendance is mandatory to keep up with lecture. All in all, an OK class.
Wingrave's the man, he cares about chem and students and will give back points if you go to his office hours. chemistry is hard but wingrave makes it very possible to do well. dont need the book at all, just study lecture notes
I had Prof. Wingrave for Chem103 in the fall and am now taking him in the winter. He's very good one-on-one, but I wouldn't recommend taking him at 8am if you can avoid it. He's much better over winter session. Always willing to help and his office hours are incredibly helpful.
Professor Wingrave with his random newspaper clips tends to liven up the class. He is one of the smartest professors i have encountered but if you are not knowledgeable of chemistry don't think your going to do well in this class. He is a HOTTIEEE though so I recommend not missing any of the lectures for your own sake!!!!!
Take Chem with Kramer if you have the choice. DON'T buy the textbook. Going to class is only worth it if there's a clicker quiz. He's very boring. Do good in the lab. The only plus side is, I failed every test and still got a C.
Lectures can be dry but if you make an effort they're worthwhile. Don't waste money on the textbook. A's are hard to get but you're guaranteed at least a C no matter what you do. Plus, he's a really nice guy, and quite approachable.
Go to his office hours. Can be boring at times, but he doesn't waste time covering stuff you don't need to know. Go to his office hours. The problems in the lecture manual are useful. Do them. Go to his office hours. I like how you can read along while he teaches so you can LISTEN unlike Kramer's blank lecture manuals. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS
Honestly, it's chemistry, and for this subject Wingrave does an exceptional job. Sit in the front and ask questions. His office hours are tremendously helpful. Tests suck, but again it's chemistry. For such a course Wingrave is good.
Not great lectures, but he's brilliant in office hours. Any questions you have ever, even if its not for his class, he'll help you. Don't buy the text. TAs are great.
very intelligent, but has no clue how to convey information in lectures. buy the guide to surviving general chemistry available in the book store, its written by a student and basically taught me everything i needed to know
good subject, good jokes, good to look at, hard to listen to. also: save yourself some money, dont buy the book. go to his office hours!! mmm...
I enjoyed his teaching more then the subject. He's a really nice guy, but seems to be off in his own little world while he's teaching. The class itself was hard as heck. Impossible to get an A on, but impossible to fail. As Chem teachers go, he was quite good.
Boring class when taking chemistry, but i love him now that i'm a workshop leader. use practice tests to study. book is pointless. Mike Rosen is a genius. Buy his book if you have no prior experience with chemistry. Impossible to get below a C- in the class or an A.
Wingrave is a really nice guy and extremely willing to help- if you have a question, ask after class or at office hours! pretty clear given the difficulty of some of the material. like people say, very hard to get above a B or below a C. study the general guide by mike rosen and previous tests!!! I would take a class with him again.
boring, but cares
He is not a good professor. He is a very nice man, but not the best TEACHER. Taking introductory chem., you would think things were explained in more detail..but theyre not, basically its a..."today we are learning about moles"..."look this is a mole, and thats it" MAKE SURE YOU READ ON YOUR OWN ITS THE ONLY WAY TO PASS!
If you take this class prepare yourself to do Chemistry every day. Otherwise, you will not do well in the class. Material can be extremely confusing and overwhelming. During some classes I just stared at the overhead and did not comprehend anything.
I feel like when he introduces new material he doesnt have any introduction to it: like why are we learning this, what am I supposed to do with it?! I am always confused during lecture and don't really comprehend the lecture notes when I go back to look at them. Once for a test i memorized like 30 molecules and they were barely on the test!!! FML
This class is a joke. It is seemingly an easy class to pass, but wingrave does not know how to teach at all. He throws new information at you every class and doesnt ever stop to ask if there are any questions. Also, he is one of the most boring teachers ive ever had. if i am still awake and look around the class, half of the class is fast asleep.
he sux.. nice guy bad teaching
Sweet sweater vests.
This class is basically a teach-yourself-chemistry class. His lectures are absolutely useless. Buy the guide to surviving general chemistry and prepare to teach yourself everything. Chemistry departments needs some serious help because even though you can fail all of the tests and pass, no one leaves the class understanding chemistry. Frustrating.
class is boring, tests are very hard but just keep a 40% average on tests and you will pass because of the huge curve. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK!
He was the absolute WORST chem teacher possible. I went in liking chem. This class destroy it for me and made me change my major! his lectures are useless, his manuel is incomprehensible. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. It'll be the worst semester you have. DONT DO IT
Wingrave is a very nice guy, but not a good teacher. He just reads right off the projector notes. You should go to class though because he does sample problems and (sometimes) there are clicker quizzes. Tests extremely hard. I had no idea what my grade was going to be because his grading is very confusing.
It was the most pointless class that I had this semester, although chem is required for engineers, he makes it so uninteresting, he's so boring and puts you to sleep, i feel like he knows what he's talking about but doesn't explain well. Take kramer.
I did (and you can do) well in this class, but with no thanks to Wingrave. He consistently fails to engage/clearly explain concepts to the class. I had to teach myself everything, ace labs, do chem skillbuilders, ask a lot of questions in the workshops, and study hard for his tricky exams that he generously curves,&forgot everything after wards!
Prof. Wingrave's class is boring and super super hard. I was convinced I was going to fail his class considering I failed all 3 exams. However, I managed to get a B-. He isnt the best teacher but he's willing to help during office hours. If you maintain 60s on the exams and complete the labs and online homework you will easily get a B.
He is not as bad as everyone says! He is friendly and tells funny jokes to lighten the heaviness of the material. He expects students to understand the material when he explains it and to go out and study more what they don't understand. Winter session seems to be easier if you have that option. Overall he is a nice guy and decent teacher.
Your success in this class is dependent on how much effort you are willing to put into teaching yourself concepts. Workshops are a bust. ChemSkill Builder and Guide to Surviving General Chemistry are a must. Very hard to fail, but almost impossible to get an A.
Solid professor. This is the difference between Wingrave and Kramer plain and simple. Wingrave will teach you the method behind chemistry, Kramer will assume you already understand what you're doing and move quickly without going enough into the theory. Wingrave's tests are tougher. He's a smart guy though, use him.
His lecture notes seemed to confuse me more, I've been relying on the textbook to understand concepts taught in class. He speaks very softly and is kind of hard to hear. His tests are hard..even if you study a lot. He is very nice, though. And very approachable. Even with not scoring highly on tests, he told me I'd get a decent grade.
i took wingrave for 103 and 104 and i have heard that he is better than kramer, however, an A is utterly impossible. attending lecture is advised because he will sporadically gives quizzes without telling you. the exams are almost impossible to do well on. i got 60's on every exam and got a B on the class.
Very unclear and inaudible because he does not use a microphone, uses old-school overhead projector that is extremely hard to see, the chemskillbuilder takes FOREVER so do it ahead of time and tests are impossible.
He is an awesome professor. This courses was challenging but its manageable. He is really helpful in office hours, and makes things alot easier. Even though lectures are boring, study hard and you will be fine. Dont buy the text book, i wasted $100 and couldnt return. Study and get whatever help you can, dont drop because its not worth it.
Took him for 103 and 104 over winter. He is the best! And adorable in his sweater vests. The class isn't that difficult. Stop whining, go to class, study every other day, keep up with CSBs and you'll be fine.
He's a great professor it is the course that is difficult! Yes lecture is monotonous but just go, sit in the front row and take notes as best as you can. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. Going to him for extra help is the best thing you can do, he sometimes gives extra credit to regulars. 103 is hard but just put in the effort!
TERRIBLE! so disorganized! The grading of tests always gets messed up, but we always get extra points which is nice, but the tests are still so hard! A is impossible, but its impossible to fail. Do everything and you are guaranteed a C (even if you fail every test)
I've taken Wingrave for 103/104, and really it's the class, not him. His exams are daunting, but take advantage of the extra points he throws in with CSB and workshop and you should pass. A is very hard, below a C is impossible. DRINK COFFEE BEFORE CLASS! And he'll invariably give extra points on exams because the TAs can't grade worth crap.
Papa Wingrave is so sweet if you go to his office hours, but he is SO BORING during class. i couldnt stay awake without coffee for his 8am class. dont buy the text book its a big waste of money and no one ever actually uses it .Wingraves lecture manual is really bad and disorganized so good luck teaching yourself all of the material for tests
Had papa Wingrave for CHEM 103 and 104. First, workshops for those classes are worthless. The material is usually 3 weeks behind. Second, his lecture manuals are comparable to the instructions on how to assemble NASA's Challenger; a bunch a rift-raft that makes absolutely no sense. You MUST attend class to get the material. He loves tricks exams!
Spare yourself from this colonel sanders look-alike (complete with suspenders). Lecture manual is a complete wreck, does not do a good job answering questions, extremely monotone. If you are lucky enough to be able to stay awake, you might understand 20% of whats going on. If you get stuck buy The Guide to Surviving General Chemistry and good luck.
I did& you can do decently well if you DON'T rely on him via chem skillbuilders, workshops, labs, occasional class exercises, and his generous curves on exams. Just don't expect to really understand/be interested in the material. He should stick to research!
Professor Wingrave is truely the nicest guy. Do not buy the hardcover textbook you NEVER use it. Lectures are long, confusing, and boring but he gives clicker quizzes some days so you should go. Attendance is not mandatory. Study for his exams by using the year before's, they are usually the same format but different numbers and such.
Dr. Wingrave is a very nice man, but not that great of a teacher. I honestly don't know what I would have done without purchasing "The Guide to Surviving General Chemistry". It was apparently a book written by someone who took wingrave's class and was a tutor for it. All I know is buying that book saved my life in that class
Very smart man and a great professor. Teaches thoroughly and explains everything well, I never had a problem understanding the material, but if you want to do well in the class you need to do a lot of studying on your own time. He is always happy to help. An A is possible with work, but he also makes it possible to pass even if you fail every test.
Professor Wingrave is NOT a good teacher. He shows powerpoint slides most of the time with useless information that does not pertain to the exams. I was told by my TA that the material he puts on the exam is much harder than Professor Kramers. Whatever you do, take a different professor :)
The worst professor I have ever had at the University of Delaware. He comes late to class, not helpful, and does not curve. The e-mail he sent out to his chem104 students at the end of the semester said "No curve. you got the grade you deserved." Choose any other chemistry professor besides him!!!
Hard class. You will probably fail most tests but you can still get a C in the class. To get an A you have to do a lot of work and studying outside of class because his lectures are practically useless. But he is helpful because if you go to him after you have taken a test, he will usually give you some points back to raise your test grade:)
In order to get a high grade in this class, you need to study the lecture notes. You can at least get a C in this class (if not, you didn't try). Prof. Wingrave is very helpful. USE HIS OFFICE HOURS! His lectures can be very repetitive, but this is to help you learn the material. The only person you can blame for the grade you received is yourself.
Wingrave is a great person, but a not so great teacher. The textbook in the class is useless and I wouldnt even bother buying it. Studying the lecture manual is the best bet, but even that is hard to understand. I used "The Guide to Surviving Chemistry" which I found at the bookstores on campus and that book is the only thing that made sense
Worst class ever. Wingrave is a nice man, but will never actually know a good way of teaching chem103. I am lucky enough not to suffer the torture of having his chem104 class. DONT BUY Txtbook, he will never use it and even tells you not to buy it. He's monotone and puts people to sleep. End of semester class attendance = 30% first month = 90%
I LOVE profesor Wingrave. He really loves what he does and wants his students to do well. He puts himself out there to be available to his students as much as he can. I would highly recommend go to office hours, especially after tests, he will give you points back because the TA's cannot grade and he loves that you make the effort to come!!
8:00am lecture, no point in attending class since I couldn't stay awake. Get the orange Survival Guide to chemistry, and highlight whatever topics you learn in lecture. Spend a little bit of time studying everyday because its hard to cram for exams. Large curve in class, Drops lowest exam for final. WORK HARD, dont fall behind
Wingrave's lecture manual is a disaster, get the orange survival guide! It is extremely helpful and very clear. There is a large curve in the class, so almost everyone does well. Defiantly study a little bit. And go to his office hours, he's a super sweet man. And will usually give points back on tests if you go over it with him!
While he's a nice, knowledgeable man who wants students to succeed in chemistry, Wingrave struggles in teaching it! You must rely on other sources (i.e workshops if they're w/the material, labs, skillbuilders and his curve) in order to do decently well. However, don't expect to learn/remember anything!
Tough class but almost impossible to not get at least a C. Study frequently as he says. He is a good teacher and really cares. Only complaint was that the lectures did not line up with labs and workshop times which made those not helpful at all. Clicker quizes here and there, lot of easy points.I hope this gets published in the lecture manuel!!
The class material is pretty hard and the tests are impossible but the final grade is always better than expected. Study hard and don't freak out if you do really bad on a test. Always visit him after the tests because he gives extra points out easily.
Papa wingrave is the man!!! such a nice guy who cares about what he does. 8 AMs can be rough, but course capture helps. chemistry is hard no matter what, tests are challenging - theres no getting around it. study a few weeks in advance and do the homework, easy B. also go to office hours!!!
PAPA WINGRAVE IS AWESOME! I took his class over winter after I had to drop Kramer's class. You'll either love him and hate Kramer, or visa versa. He truly loves chemisty, teaching, and his students. If you can, take him over winter and you'll actually grow to love chemistry.
Papa Wingrave is amazing. He really wants to help you and knows what he's talking about. Unfortunately he only teaches at 8am, and is monotone, so you may have issues staying awake. But when it comes to exams he does what he can to give you points back. And he is the most adorable southern man!
Take his class if being taught chemistry by a prospector from 18th century America might entertain you at 8am. He's friendly and crystal clear in his lectures. Buy the lab, workshop, and lecture manuals ONLY and you'll be fine. Southern accent. Slight lisp. Looks like a Keebler elf minus the hat. Hope he reads this to the 103 class.
Took him for 103, decided to switch to Kramer for 104 and it was a big mistake. His lectures are vey useful and the class isn't filled with clicker questions. You probably do it four times the whole semester. You do a lot less work than what Kramer's class has to do.
This class is mostly memorization. Memorizing this stuff will not help you ever, except for the tests. It is a class you have to take, but if you can, take Kramer instead!!!
Good guy. Good teacher. You won't find a better teacher for Chem103 at UD. He is clear and if you listen, what he is saying makes sense. The class isn't easy, but he makes the material as understandable as it can get.
I slept through most of his class. Or just didn't go. He uses complicated words and the things he says don't make sense. I got more out of the workshops and the "surviving chem 103" book. But he is a nice guy and seems like he really wants his students to pass. He's just way too confusing.
Jimmy is a good professor. Chem is hard to learn, especially as an incoming Freshman, and it can be overwhelming. But he does crack jokes sometimes, and if you can do 8am lecture halls with 300 people, watching the recorded lecture is a good substitute. Don't bother with the text book. He's always honest and will help if he can, he's a good guy.
Chem103 is a hard class, no matter who you get for a teacher. That being said, Wingrave is a very nice guy and is more than willing to help! Attending lecture is a good idea, but if you happen to not catch what he said, dont' worry. Course capture is all of his lecture recorded and is available on Sakai. Don't be afraid to ask questions in class!
If you think this class is hard it only gets harder so you might want to reconsider a major switch.. Jim is a great teacher who offers help anytime you need it and clearly explains concepts while not putting anything on the test you have not seen before in lecture.
Prof Wingrave is amazing!I suck at chem!!! I failed every test, getting an average of a 50/120 on each. I barely went to class. I did the online homework and labs, and ended up with a C. Its super hard to fail the class, pretty sure I was at least in the bottom 5% percentile. If you're just looking to get by with minimal work, take him!
If you have a slight interest in chemistry, don't take this class, as it turn you off. Book is useless, don't buy it. Buy orange book, i found it to be a great summary. Class is really difficult, a lot of memorization. Need to put time in. I found Wingrave very nice and helpful if you ever need help. Class lectures are very boring as well.
This class is the reason I didn't sleep first semester. It is extremely time consuming and difficult. STUDY. HARD. He moves through the material really fast and by the time you take a test, you'd have already learned half the material that's on the next test. Lectures will put you to sleep. He tries to keep the class lively but has really dry humor
This class was hard because of the material not the professor. Wingrave was awesome and is usually at his office hours. He doesn't give homework like Kramer does.
Wingrave is a nice guy, but his class is painfully boring at 8am. If you're like me, you'll fall asleep everyday. Study hard a couple nights before the test and you'll probably end up with a B. The class is curved because everyone fails the tests. Have fun!
8AMs every day, five days a week during winter session. It was rough going. But he's an overall nice, likeable, grandpa-type professor. Extremely clear with the material, you just have to make sure you study on your own. You can't get by in this class by just listening to the lectures. Take him!
Wingrave is extremely boring at 8AM. Try as hard as possible to stay awake. If you go through the lecture manual and practice tests the class isn't too hard. Find people to study with. If you're actually able to stay awake during class and pay attention you'll actually do well.
Truly a great teacher. He was very clear on what you needed to know and made sure you knew how to do the problem. He wants you to succeed so go to office hours and try! Chemistry is a hard subject so just review the lectures and go over the problems in the lecture manual. He tries to make it fun for you! Definitely take him!
very helpful. tests are hard, but do well on homework, lab, and clicker questions and you`ll get out with atleast a "C". i averaged a 55 out of 121 on every test and still got a "C".
going to lectures is pointless except for the clicker question points. his lecture manuel is pretty self explanatory. you can easily teach yourself the material although there is a lot of it. don't wait until the night before the test to study or to do the skillbuilders. don't buy the textbook, I never opened it. definitely a class worth taking.
His voice will instantly put you to sleep. Tests are filled with errors. Lecture notes are confusing and small. He doesnt explain concepts very well. I have taken both Wingrave and Kramer and find Kramer significantly better at teaching and no harder.
He's a nice guy, but his lectures are incredibly boring. He is terrible at explaining concepts or how to do certain things and almost assumes prior knowledge. He moves so fast that if you look away for a second, you're a lecture behind. Take Kramer if you can. She's just as hard, but has way better methods of explaining things.
Wingrave is a very nice man that has a relaxing voice. I took AP Chem in High School, but I decided to retake chem anyway to get a good grade. His tests are somewhat confusing, but he wasn't a bad teacher.
Lectures are boring, lecture manual is all over the place and his tests are ridiculous. If you go to him for office hours though he does try to help you.
He's a really nice guy and seems to really love what he teaches, but he's disorganized. His exams are filled with errors, and he often rushes through the material so quickly that you can't grasp the concepts. Even though I attended lectures, I had to watch almost all of them them again on course capture. I wouldn't take a course with him again.
Wingrave is the soft-spoken, southern gentleman of the chemistry department. He loves what he does, and seems to enjoy time with students, but the combo of his voice and delivery of the material puts students to sleep on a regular basis. If you manage to stay awake AND take good notes AND study a lot, you should be fine.
Wingrave puts people to sleep like its his job. I never went to class because it was an 8 am and there was no point of sleeping in smith when you can sleep in your bed. Make sure you give your clicker to someone who goes everyday for those points. Go to office hours to get points back. Ended with an A- but he's better than that linemen Kramer
So difficult to find the motivation to go to his class. His 8am lecture is incredibly boring and tiresome. Furthermore, Wingrave goes through challenging material at a rapid pace, while not even presenting it well. Don't expect to actually learn chemistry- just learn how to do well enough on tests. The class is on a massive curve so grading is ok.
he is a gentleman with a feel for chem... he is a woodsman and loves to grow out his beard and wear suspenders...classic case of a bro, study and you should be fine
Had him for 103 and 104 and literally hate the guy. SO HARD TO GET AHOLD OF. Went to his office hourse every week and could never see him because the lines were too long, then he would not accomodate to meet at another time, which ended up leaving me screwed in the class. never answers emails. so boring, I am retaking the class. Hard tests too
Jimmy Wingrave is the most egotistical man. While he may be knowledgable in the topic of chemistry, he is a horrible professor. Honestly, he does not want his students to achieve anything. He is more interested in proving himself to be intelligent. Perhaps he is simply doing this out of self pity. Do not take this class. Ever.
Wingrave is so unhelpful. His lectures are confusing, he rambles constantly, and he does not make sense. His tests are impossible and you only really need about 60% to get a B. Would not recommend this teacher take Kramer!
Terrible teacher. I have not learned much at all since hes taken over the class. Do not take him if you don't have to. Basically expects you to teach yourself everything.
He is not that bad of guy as others may say. He knows his stuff and really taught me a lot. He is here to help you and wants us all to do well. He requires you to be willing to learn and put forth alot of time and effort if you want to pass. Overall, I really liked wingrave and he is a great guy
Probably the worst class I will ever take but I don't really blame Wingrave too much. The class is overall very hard and most people escape the class with a C- to a B-. Very difficult to get an A. He speaks in a monotone voice which can easily put you to sleep in the early class. Tests are extremely difficult. Be happy with a 65% on them
Wow, horrible professor. I'm honestly disgusted with Chemistry now thanks to this troll. He is frequently corrected by students in class and makes it difficult to view the material being lectured.
Professor Wingrave is THE WORST. If you can manage to avoid taking him for chem103, or avoiding chem103 in general, DO IT. The class is basically impossible and will add a lot of unnecessary stress to your life and your schedule. Don't take it. Everyone bombs the tests no matter how much you study, and everyone ends the semester with a C, at best.
I hated this class so much, and its at 8am. However, it is also impossible to fail this class. He puts so many points into homework, labs, and workshop that you can fail all the exams and still pass. It's better to take him and pass then to take a different teacher and struggle, without passing.
Very monotone and boring. Tests are near impossible and its hard to understand what your grade in the class might actually be. Buy the orange guide to surviving chemistry to help understand his lecture notes, it will save your life
He is extremely boring, he will put you to sleep. Once you realize he never does clicker questions the amount of kids who actually show up dwindles down to a quarter of the people in the class. The test are impossible but the labs will curve your grade. The mean score is always around a 50/120.
Semi-decent teacher.
Wingrave is a good teacher in class, but he is pretty boring guy and goes off topic a lot. His tests are pretty challenging because he puts things he didnt cover in depth on the test. The hw is tedious but not that hard.
i was a student that was stuck with wingrave after the passing of my teacher and wow did my grades suffer. He tested us on material he didn't cover in class and assigns large repetitive assignments for you to do at home.
Easiest class I have ever took. I don't know what the big deal is with this guy. His lectures are informative, he explains everything so clearly, he makes chem fun. Also he is hilarious, his jokes crack me up all the time LOL.
Very difficult course that requires a lot of studying. He's pretty bad at explaining things and tends to mumble. Teaches by flying through sample problems and moving on. Would not recommend this teacher, although most freshman get stuck with him for CHEM103 (Especially because the other CHEM103 teacher passed away). Tests are VERY difficult.
Prof. Wingrave is a very nice guy. He loves what he does and he you can tell he wants you to learn. Everybody seems to hate him because his class is "impossible." Well... Yes, his tests are very VERY challenging even if you study. You need to know your stuff. It's s a bit much for a GENERAL Chemistry class, but you wont fail if you do your work.
Wingrave is one of those teachers that you have to learn their style of teaching. In the beginning I hated his class and hated how he taught. But once I started figuring him out, my grades showed. If you want an easy class to pass take him, will have to work for anything above a C
Wingrave is a really nie teacher and he seems like he really wants to help, however having him at 8am is rough because he can be a little boring at times. His lecture manual is hard to follow if someone isnt talking you through it too. Study hard at least two weeks in advance becuase his exams are HARD! you should get a C in the class.
Definately the hardest class of the semester for me. I did not put that much effort into this class though and got a C. It's almost impossible not to get atleast a C- because of how big the curve is. Hes not a terrible teacher by any means, but he's not the best either. And hes a pretty nice guy. If your willing to put in the work, a B+ in possible
Professor Wingrave, is a great person. And he's usually a great teacher too. Although he can be disorganized most classes, he really knows his stuff. Just try not to fall asleep in this 8 am. This class is just a lot of work, it's not that he is a bad teacher. And GO TO WORKSHOP. It really helps. I cannot stress that enough.
GenChem is an annoying requirement for scientists and engineers no matter what - liking chem doesn't mean you'll like this class. Just grit your teeth and push through the work. Hard to fail, probably even harder to get an A, but your grade is fairly reflective of what you put into it.
Professor Wingrave is more than willing to help and you can tell he loves what he's doing. Lecture is hard to understand, especially at 8 am, so go to his office hours. Take advantage of the grade boosters... go to workshop, do the connects, and you'll be fine. I had horrible exams and still got a B. You don't really need the textbook.
Even though I'm only getting a C in the class, I love Wingrave! He really gives everyone benefit of the doubt and DOES try to help you. He gave all of his students this semester full credit for HW even if they didn't do it because of 'distractions' he claims. Tests are curved an ABSURD amount, labs aren't bad, workshop helps. He's a good guy.
Although Wingrave is a really nice guy, that's hasn't helped me do well in his class. I studied extremely hard for every exam and still didn't do well on them. The only reason I'm not failing miserable is the huge curve, but I still feel so defeated after each exam. I recommend going to class if you want even a chance of doing well on the exams.
AVOID THIS CLASS!!!!!! Honestly staying awake in his class is IMPOSSIBLE. He is extremely scattered and is always jumping pages without warning or telling the class where he is. If you're a straight A student get used to the fact that you're very unlikely to even receive a B. Definitely get a tutor/watch course capture. Doesn't answer e-mails ever
Attend lectures and stay awake, he does iclicker quizzes. Use the textbook to learn some material ahead of time because he's terrible at explaining concepts. Use the orange book called "Guide to surviving general chemistry." He is not helpful at office hours and does not answer e-mails. To help grasp very basic concepts, try Khanacademy.com.
Wingrave honestly isn't that bad. He gave everyone a 100% on all the connects due to distractions. His exams are tough, but if you go to class, use course capture, and read the orange book, you should be fine.
Wingrave was not a good teacher. I did have kramer at first so I feel I can compare them fairly. Wingrave was way worse. He was horrible at teaching and very disorganized. I came out of each class confused. You MUST teach yourself most of the information to do well. But it is possible to get an A! This class teaches you how to work hard no doubt.
The class is hard but there are enough extra points offered to make up for bad exams. Go to workshop, do the connects, and go to class for clicker questions and you'll be fine. Going to his office hours is also extremely helpful. You can tell Wingrave loves what he's doing and he really wants us all to learn. Also, you don't need the textbook.
Not a bad teacher but he certainly is not a great teacher. extremely boring hard to stay awake. if you do connect and get clicker points its esy to coast through it. its impossible to fail
Not that difficult. People say he's a really hard teacher, but that's b/c CHEM is a hard subject -- it's not the teacher really. Test 1 and 3 are very easy, but be prepared to fail Test 2. However, since he lets you replace your lowest Test with the final, there's no need to panic. Contrary to belief, there's no curve. An A is doable.
His lecture is clear and helpful.
Left class confused every day. Chemistry is not my strongpoint but I need it for my major. Luckily class is literally impossible to fail to I managed to get out with a C. Definitely get the textbook and keep up with chapters. Don't wait until the night before to study!
Unless you're naturally good at chemistry, you're going to find this class hard. But Wingrave gives enough extra points that it's pretty hard to fail as long as you put in effort. I failed every single exam and still got a B for the course so don't get discouraged by bad exams. I recommend taking advantage of his office hours too.
I love Wingrave! The class is hard and it's easy to fall behind in lecture but he is a lot easier to understand in office hours. He really cares about his students learning and he shows passion for what he teaches. It's a hard class but also hard to fail if you just do the workshops, labs, and clicker Qs. I would take him again for 104.
Wingrave is a nice guy. At first his lectures will be boring and sometimes u'll fall asleep. But that doesn't matter as long as u rewatch all the lectures online a week before exams. If u pay real good attention and take notes while watching the lectures online u'll do well on the exams. I always landed in the top 25% of test grades by doing that.
Speaks in a monotone; very easy to fall asleep if you're not already awake. Doesn't explan things very well. Makes several mistakes on his tests. Aviod if possible
He's a really sweet guy, but his material is very dense. Be prepared for a challenge. He does curve though, so do well on everything else and get above 50% on the exams and you'll do fine. Get a tutor if you can, and talk to the TA's! Just work hard and don't wait till the last minute to study. You want to start ATLEAST a week in advance!
Wingrave is an intelligent guy, but I don't think he should be teaching general chemistry. He expects you to just understand the material. I recommend getting a tutor as soon as classes start and checking out some online resources as well. If chem isn't your thing, start studying for exams at least 2 weeks prior. Good luck!
Hard class, and wingrave is very confusing, I enjoy his side comments, but pretty much end up teaching myself chemistry, he just doesn't teach in a way that makes sense to me. Book is helpful for general concepts, but overall its hard to fail as long as you do all the labs and homework. Tests are harder than the practice ones.i don't recommend him.
Nice professor and generally understanding and willing to help. It is obvious that he is well versed in chemistry but he does not have the ability to convey the concepts to freshman who have never taken chemistry. It is easy to do well if you study in advance for exams and do well on labs and homework.
Wingrave's class is really hard and the tests are poorly written but he is very nice during office hours and does his best to be fair. He also tries to make jokes in class, which is endearing. Avoid if possible, but if you can't, go to office hours and DONT procrastinate
Wingrave is a good professor. Hes grading system is made o make it almost impossible to fail. If you do everything else, i.e. workshop, homework, labs, and get a at least a 40 on the exams you will pass with a C
I'm sorry, but he's boring. He tries to stuff too much information down your throat... instead of helping you learn the important things that you can take with you after this class. It's an intro class, few are chem or bio majors. Virtually impossible to fail if you go to workshop, lab, and do the HW. Getting an A is almost as impossible too.
Took him for 103/104 and recieved a B in both. Is one of the nicest professors you will have, but is very tough. Chem is a hard topic no matter who you take, so begin studying now. Hard to get an A but even harder to fail the class. Got a 76,72,82 on my exams. Lab is a lot harder in 104, but still a grade booster if you take your time.
Like, I don't even know. Nice guy, really. But so unclear and his lecture notes make 0 sense. I didn't even use them to study. I used the orange "guide to surviving gen chem." I got a B which I deserved. But this is one of those classes that it's really all luck if you do well on the exams. Even if I studied more I would end up with the same grade.
I had him for both Chem 103 and Chem 104. I got an A in both classes, but they were by far the hardest classes I've ever taken. Chem is a hard subject, and Wingrave is so disorganized and his lectures are so confusing that I had to resort to teaching myself everything. I would not recommend him.
Nice guy, adorable sense of humor, but rambles on quite a bit so it's hard to grab what's important. Lecture notes are all over the place, almost incomprehensible. I got an A in 103 and B in 104 even though my average test scores were about the same, so classes are probably curved even though he'll deny it. It'll feel weird but just teach yourself.
He's really smart & nice, but he doesn't know how to teach. He assumes you know a lot already & doesn't explain much. His lecture manual isn't helpful. You end up teaching yourself most of the material. Exam problems are very different from workshop & lecture problems. Failed every exam. Need to do good in labs & go to workshops to save grade!!
Wingrave is a nice guy and I am sure he is very qualified in chemistry. However he cannot teach. He sticks with his lecture manual which doesn't help too much but I didn't learn much from going to class. Get outside help. This class is difficult, along with his exams. A lot of people fall asleep. Use his practice exams to study.
Wingrave is not a teacher i would recommend taking if you are looking for a good grade. His exams are very hard and his lectures are pretty boring. Barley any outside work. You can fail all exams and get a C. Most people get F's or D-'s on the exams.Labs aren't hard just boring. He is really helpful in his office hours and is a really nice guy.
I am not a chemistry person. And this class made me even less of one. The tests are impossible no matter how much you study. The lecture is very very boring. And the material is very different from high school chem. Windgrave is a very nice man. He's patient and will answer questions when asked. The class is just difficult, so watch out.
He was such a horrible teacher! Even when you attend his classes he makes everything even more confusing. You are better off learning everything from youtube or from a tutor. His labs don't match up with his lectures and I have honestly learned more with the TA than I did with him. STAY AWAY!!!! He is the worst teacher chem teacher I have ever had.
Smart professor who knows his chemistry but his class is super boring. It is hard to stay awake and interested at 8 am every tuesday and thursday. I just wish he could make the class fun and enjoyable. The best way to do well in class is to teach yourself and use online videos
His class is extremely boring and his voice makes me fall asleep everyday although you kind of have to come to class in case there are clicker quizzes. Overall, you have to teach yourself entirely and the class is almost all memorization. His grading is pretty fair though and labs, online HW, and clicker quiz grades can help A LOT.
I took Dr. Wingrave during Spring 2013 and I thought that the class was extremely difficult. However, Dr. Theoplod is even more difficult. Wingraves exams are doable and his grading curve is awesome. I never went to his class and managed a B-. Just a heads up, even though he is difficult, others are harder
Challenging, all there is to it. I had barely any background knowledge and lectures weren't that useful. However on my own time I somehow managed to teach myself the material from his lecture manual (useful because those are examples and the format he uses) its going to be a struggle, get a tutor. study throughout the semester and hope for the best
I had Wingrave for 103 & 104 and received an A in both. The people complaining on here about how difficult the class is are the ones who didn't study or show up to class. Memorize EVERYTHING he tells you to. Also, look at exactly how he works out each problem in lectures because he puts the same type of problems on exams.
Be prepared to study hard. This class is unnecessarily difficult. He likes to lecture about the concept behind the Chem problem instead of how to do it, which I found frustrating. The curve is great even though the exams are difficult. I received a good grade but only because I had taken previous Chem courses and studied hard.
I honestly don't understand why people do so poorly in this class. I took AP Chem in high school and got a 3 yet I got an A in this class. He makes his past exams available to you outside of his office and they're the same as his new ones. Take a couple of those and understand the material on there and there's no reason you shouldn't get an A.
If you want to learn the material, take Wingrave and be prepared to study. I went into his class terrified of chemistry, and now I really feel that I understand it. I got an A, but I had to work really hard to get there. If you stay awake and pay attention in lecture, he is actually quite funny and really knows what he is talking about.
He does not explain things very well and I often left class confused. The labs are too in-depth and are too long for the allotted time. However, as long as you do the work and perform decently on exams, you will get a C. He drops your lowest exam grade at the end of the semester. He seems like a great guy, just not a good teacher.
He uses course capture. Great sense of humor. Very helpful during office hours as long as you are putting effort into your studying. Tests are very hard. The labs, quizzes and HW makeup a large part of the grade and are designed for you to do well so you could do poorly on exams and still pass the class. Very hard to fail very hard to get an A.
Wingrave's a nice guy, but he makes this class a lot harder than it has to be. I really like his curve which brought my grade up to a B. Go over his course capture notes and buy the Guide to Surviving General Chem book. It's really helpful.
I didn't have him for 103 and he expects you to know everything he taught but my teacher covered some different topics. He doesn't go over things, only reads from the lecture manual. Only reason to attend class is for the clicker points which happen about 4 times during the semester. You're on your own for learning the material in this course.
I had him for 103 and 104. I managed to get an A in 103 but struggled for a B+ in 104. My tip to you: go through the lecture manual and type up your OWN notes/summaries after class. Do practice problems and MEMORIZE everything you can. This class is HARD. Good luck you can do it but its gonna be a LOT of work.
The fact that is says the average grade is a B+ is a total lie. The majority of everyone (especially if taken as a freshman) WILL get a C. He grades in a very strange manner in which it makes it hard to fail but also extremely hard to get an A. My friends and I took it and we are all very good students and ended up with C's and we studied a lot.
This was one of the hardest classes Ive ever taken, but as poorly as I did on the exams, I still ended up with a C, which is passing. Chem is tough, but manageable. I don't recommend it with Wingrave though.
Get ready to make chemistry your main focus for the semester. Hardest class I have ever taken. Wingrave doesn't make chemistry understandable, in fact, he makes it a lot harder than it has to be. My advice to you is to get as much help as you can. Find the kids in the class who understand it and study with them. Good Luck.
Professor Wingrave is a great guy. He is always there for his students and is extremely interested in the material he is teaching. It's easy to fall asleep in lecture because chem is chem... And it's not mandatory to go to class because he uses UD Capture. Exams cover a lot of material so they are not easy, but they aren't impossible. Big curve!!!
Going into Chem103 I had no background knowledge and Professor Wingrave really didn't help with that. He makes everything more complicated than it is so it's better to just learn it yourself or on Khanacademy. He also doesn't really answer your question directly or gives an unhelpful response. Also all the other chem professors allow notecards.
You will feel that he is being unfair because other CHEM103 professors allow notecards for tests. You will learn about organic chemistry even though other CHEM103 professors don't teach it. But guess what, this is college. No one is going to baby you. This class will teach you to grow up and become independent and you will learn a lot about chemis
Although I didn't like Professor Wingrave in the beginning of the class, after I sought help from him I changed my opinion. He is much more helpful during office hours than lecture; he explains things more clearly and will work through as many problems as you need to until you understand the concept.
He took over my class after my professor passed away halfway through the semester. He is soft spoken so sit in the front of the lecture hall to hear him. Lines are long at office hours but attempt to go. My best advice is to seek group tutoring outside of class if you want to succeed, especially if this is your first chemistry class
Went to about 6 lectures total (granted rewatched most on course capture), failed all the tests, got about a 77% on the online homework and made it to 1 clicker lecture and still passed with a C. Try hard if you want that A, but try even harder if you want that F. Class is a chore, lab is really all that matters. Don't get textbook.
Very nice guy, poor teacher. One of the books you are required to buy is just a print-out of his slides with his shorthanded notes, which are impossible to understand. He tends to ramble on excessively, and is unclear about what is and isn't necessary to know. Do all of the work and lots of your own on the side if this is your first time with chem.
Professor Wingrave is a nice guy, but honestly rambles on and on. Sometimes he confuses himself while teaching and forgets how to solve problems. He is fair in the fact that if he doesn't cover it in class it's not on the exam. Get ready to memorize A LOT of things. He makes you memorize everything and other professors let you use a note card.
Not many students do well in his class, but I don't really think that is his fault. He is a very nice guy, and he makes a lot of his old exams available. Just by studying those and some of the lecture manual I was able to get an A. Chemistry is a hard course, no matter who you take it with, so really study hard if you want a good grade.
You almost have to try and fail his class although getting an A is extremely difficult. Ample oppotunity is given through lab, quizzes, HW, and extra credit on exams to pull up your grade. Lowest test can be dropped.
Fell asleep almost every day and the tests are very hard, however if you do well on homework and labs you can easily get a C or B. I failed 2 of the 3 exams and ended with a B.
Wingrave uses CHEM103 and 104 as weed out courses. Your goal should be to pass and move on. Getting a B is not too difficult, but getting an A requires an extreme amount of effort. Perhaps with a background in AP Chem it would be possible. Tests are long and difficult, but don't account for everything. Do the online HW and clickers & you'll be fine
Dr. Wingrave is a nice guy, but lectures are so boring and monotonous. His office hours are packed, and his tests are ridiculous. He congratulated the class for a D average and said we "killed it". In fact, he raved about it for weeks. A "B" is doable, but if you want an A, forget about it. Chemistry will be your life if you care about your GPA.
You don't have to go to his lectures, but I suggest you do. He is a tough professor and the lectures are long, but when you get down to it, he will teach you what you need to know. Very helpful in office hours.
Knowledgable? Yes. Helpful? No. Wingrave's monotonous dribble makes for long, fruitless lectures. Supplementary studying is very necessary (in fact it's just about the only time that I learned anything about chemistry). Workshop helps, granted you have a decent TA. Study groups, advice from veteran students, and a sacrifice to your god is advised.
I skipped almost every single class and taught myself out of the book and did average(sometimes above) on every exam. I hate his lectures, he does not teach a single thing. Even if you think you know the material well, think again, his exam questions will always throw you off. Lab is fine if you get a good TA. Workshops are okay if you get good TAs
The lectures are extremely long and just drag on. There isn't too much homework, but the class still takes up a lot of your time with lecture, lab, workshop, and watching additional lectures on UD capture. His tests are difficult, and he doesn't allow students to have notecards with equations; he expects you to memorize everything.
Professor Wingrave knows what he is doing. Chem is a difficult subject and you can't blame the professor for that. For as difficult as it is, a lot of points contribute to your grade. Make sure you do all the sapling homework, do well in lab, attend all workshops, and go to lecture for clicker questions.
Good luck. You'll need it.
I hate this man. He is no help whatsoever and expects you to do everything on your own. It's as if he assumes that the only class you're taking is his and that none of your other classes matter. Avoid his class if at all possible.
Wish I knew how bad this class would be before I signed up. CHEM is a difficult subject and Wingrave makes it even harder. Test averages fall in the D to F range and theres no curve. Lab is easy and it saves your grade
Not very clear
Wingrave may be a little boring, but he is a genuinely nice guy. His class is difficult, but he knows how to teach it to you, if you are willing to actively participate. The only homework is on Sapling, and it is fairly easy. The tests require a lot of studying, especially Organic Nomenclature, but it is doable.
Professor Wingrave is very, very boring. His lectures are long and are hard to sit through. I feel like the only reason I did well in this class was because I took honors chem in HS. Don't take unless you have a good understanding of chemistry. I will not take him again.
This class was the worse mistake of my life. Wingrave is more interested in having you memorizing useless formulas and polymers than actually understanding the material. Put in so much effort into this class and could never pass a test. You'll never understand anything with him teaching it. Try everything you can to get Graves
Chem is going to be tough no matter who it is. Wingrave gets a lot of heat on this page, but he really is a good prof. He is very helpful in office hours, and is a very nice man. He really want to help and see you do well if he notices you putting in the effort. Effort is big for this class- study a lot and go to what you need to and youll be fine.
Avoid his class at all costs. Graves is by far the superior professor. His tests are nearly impossible. Studied countless hours and failed every one. The only reason everyone passes is because of the enormous curve.
Lectures are long & boring, BUT he has a lecture manual that includes all of the material you will ever need for an exam. Exams are hard, but he tends to give many points back if you see him during his office hours. Exams are also curved. Labs, workshops & sapling homework will save your grade so make sure to do them. Work hard and you'll do fine.
I got stuck in Wingrave's class just like many other freshman and I thought his class wasn't that hard. The tests are tough but you can do well on them if you do a lot of practice. Lab helps your grade a lot so do well in that. He will definitely help you out if you go to his office hours. Watch all the youtube videos they're clearer than lectures.
Wingrave is a genuinely good person and can be helpful in office hours, otherwise I was very disappointed. I took advanced chem in highschool and didn't have to work too hard for a fine grade but found myself very vengeful at the end of the semester. Long confusing lectures, confusing grading criteria, all around disappointing.
The course is set up to where it's impossible to fail (even if you fail all exams like I did) as long as you do well on labs, homework, go to workshop, and answer clicker questions YOU WILL PASS. Wingrave has the hardest time explaining concepts and you will have to teach yourself. Use Khan Academy and study off the homework.
Wingrave is a nice guy, but his lectures drag on and he often talks about stuff that you will never need to know for his course/tests. If you only have taken one year of basic level chemistry don't take him. Only decent grades in his class come from kids who have taken AP chemistry before. Grading is set up where you will get a C no matter what.
His lectures are dry but his advice during lectures about how to go about studying and preparing for exams is something that will help you in this and other classes. I got a great grade by working hard and following his recommendations. I believe most people who struggled aren't willing to put the time in/expect entertainment over education.
Prof. Wingrave manages a pretty difficult CHEM104 class. His three tests and final exam are tough if you do not master the material. If you take his class, make sure you do well on the labs, HW, and clicker quizzes which make up the other 40% of your grade. He throws in a couple of free points and offers extra credit in the form of class reviews.
Wingrave's CHEM103 class is really hard, and if you want to do well you gotta put in the effort. His office hours are EXTREMELY helpful if you attend even a single one! He will answer ANY of your questions and cares about how you do, only if you care as well.
Very tough grader, doesnt offer extra credit. Doesn't thoroughly explain topics in class. Teaches so many students it's hard to get help from him if you need it.
Wingrave is a smart guy, but unfortunately teaching isn't his thing. He doesn't introduce topics well, you really need to learn the material before you come to class, his lectures are more supplementary. If you didn't take 103 with him, you'll have a particularly hard time because he expects you to know organics already. So advice: teach yourself.
I had to teach myself a lot of the lecture material because his lectures are extremely boring and his lectures are difficult to understand. He understands the information, but doesn't know how to explain it. The past exams that he put on Sakai and the sapling homework are pretty much the only reason I did well in his class.
He's not all that great of a teacher, and his tests often have questions on subjects that he's never spoken of. Go to lecture, and do the homework and try to learn from that, his lecture manual is helpful, and make sure you study before the test. He tends to give back points after correcting his tests.
Wingrave is a very difficult professor to work with. His lectures are long and boring and at times he is difficult to follow. His grading system is very confusing, but you really shouldn't fail. Go to office hour as those are your best chance at doing well on exams
No. Just no!
AVOID IF YOU CAN! Only take this class with Wingrave if you want to cry yourself to sleep every night. He is so boring and doesn't not know how to teach. Going to lectures are pointless bc all he does is read the lecture manual to you and doesn't explain anything. Tests are very hard. Brought down my GPA. Sapling HWs are dumb, it just busy work.
Don't take this class!
I got an A in chem last semester and am now getting a C because of Wingrave. He makes you feel stupid. I'm sorry if you have to take him but honestly don't know how he's still a professor here.
I recommend avoiding him if at all possible. Definitely read the textbook (it's a free online version) since his lectures won't help you. The average on every exam is a 50-60 and he seems happy about it. Got an A last semester in 103 with Graves and barely passing this semester. Only took because it was the only professor available this semester.
Not too great at lectures. Explains material in average fashion. TERRIBLE at responding to emails and not helpful, only helpful in office hours. Sapling homework online questions expected. Labs are annoying and Post labs even more. Workshops are mandator but pointless. Khan Academy is your friend. Make sure you practice nomenclature of molecules.
Be ready to teach yourself the material. I went to almost every lecture but it is definitely not necessary. Before exams he does clicker quizzes, but other than that you don't need to attend. It won't help. He is on ud capture so you can watch it there. he isn't very helpful
Think of Chem 103 or 104 with Wingrave as if you are going on a trip to Africa, and you decide to go on a safari adventure. Well half way through your safari tour, your guide purposely leaves you in the middle of the savannah with a bunch of hungry lions and tells you to fend for yourself. Chances are you probably won't do well. Thats this class.
Wingrave is a really nice guy and will help you if you go to his office hours. His lectures are super boring so it's almost better to skip class and learn the material on your own. The exams are super difficult, but you have to actually try to fail to get a grade lower than a B- because her curves so heavily.
DO NOT TAKE. Worst mistake of my life. He's the worst professor/teacher/anything I've ever had, I'm not exaggerating. CHEM103 is a difficult class as it is, but Wingrave makes it harder by not teaching, rambling on about unimportant details, and PUTTING BAD QUESTIONS ON EACH EXAM. By bad I mean multiple choice that doesn't have an answer. Don't!!!
Cons: Uncle Wingrave is a great guy, but not the most amazing teacher. You will have to teach yourself the material & study multiple days in advance for each test. Pros: He drops your lowest exam score, which saved my ass. If you come to his office hours with a graded exam, he may give you points back here and there for little stuff.
He makes you memorize many things which other professors don't, but the class is not impossible. If you've taken chemistry in high school, you can get an A, you just have to study for exams. Use old exams to study, do lab reports, and use the sapling practice to do the sapling, and an A is very plausible. He doesn't do the best job explaining stuff
Honestly this is a hard class but you can do very well if you practice and look at old tests. He is a nice guy and means well but he's terrible at teaching. Look over your tests, do well on sapling homework and labs and you should be fine. Take advantage of workshop leaders as this is what saved me
CHEM 103 is a very difficult class. Wingrave made it a lot more difficult to understand considering we had to memorize an abundant amount of material that maybe 5% was on the test. Yes, it was not fair. However, he is a very nice man and means well. He drops lowest exam and doubles your final which helps a TON for your final grade. dont skip class
I took Chem104 during winter session, and going to lectures made me more confused about the material, and his lecture manual makes 0 sense. Labs were kind of easy. The tests are easily the hardest I have ever taken and you do not get any sort of notecard. Also have to memorize organic nomenclature. Sapling doesn't help at all. Just the worst.
He doesnt realize hes teaching a 100-level chem class. He crams material and posts lectures online to cram more. Tests are overloaded with material while lectures and manual are subpar. Exams avg 15-30% lower than the other 103 profs. He uses a curve at the end that boosts failing grades by letter grades but does little for those already passing.
I took this during the past winter session and I 0/10 recommend. That whole month felt like a personal attack on my life. There was far too much work for only one month (Saplings, Pre labs on Canvas, Labs, Extensions, and procedures).Tests will have material on it he does not cover in lectures be ready to teach yourself.
I only had to take this course for my major and let me tell you this class is a pure nightmare. My only advice is to study hard, review all material before exams, complete sapling ahead of time, most importantly research and learn the subject yourself! use his lectures as a base and spend as much time as possible looking up the subject yourself.
This class is pretty bad. I reccommend using the orange book. Go to workshop and most importantly don't use the lecture manual as a guide for anything but practice problems. The book for 107/108 is more useful than the book assigned for 104. This class will probably tank your GPA. The subject matter isn't difficult, but the tests are.
Jimmy Wingrave is a great dude, but is way too overqualified to be teaching an introductory chem class. If you thought you were good at Chem in high school, you'll be sadly disappointed after taking this class. The tests are insanely difficult and the best way to study is by going off of old tests-- he has plenty. His office hours are helpful.
Chem 104 took a few years off of my life. I used every resource available including tutoring, office hours, free peer tutoring, and studied days before the exams to no success. His exams were so ridiculous in testing heavily on extremely hard topics in which he often never taught in class. I have no advice except to pray.

hardest/worst class I've ever taken. he is way too smart to be teaching a 100 level course and everything he says goes over your head if you don't have an extensive background in organic chem and biochem. every average test grade has been a failing grade. new labs this semester that were on stuff we haven't learned yet. better off youtubing it
This is a hard introductory class. I had taken AP Chem before so it was a little easier, but the material is covered very quickly and it felt like sometimes knowledge was assumed that should not have been. The midterms are annoying and can focus on memorization of specific material rather than comprehension. Overall, not easy, but not impossible
Absolutely horrible. His exams are IMPOSSIBLE. if you get 80/125, you will get a B in the class (hopefully). Class average for all three exams were around 50/125. Lecture manual is disgusting. GO TO HIS OFFICE TO GET YOUR EXAMS REGRADED. Slept almost every class. Does not know what technology is. He is someone's grandpa, so be nice/respectful.
I went to class 3 times, I got a 33/125, 44/125, and 42/125 on the exams and still passed the class. Here are some pointers: go to class the days before the exams for clicker points, find a group to do extensions/prelabs with, only do 50% of sapling, and ALWAYS get exams regraded. Plan to show up to office hours an hour early to get in on time. GL!
I have never had a worse professor---ever. His exams are impossible. He doesn't know how to teach. Obviously there to collect tenure. Good luck passing.
If you get placed in this class with Wingrave, drop out now. I had to switch my major because of doing so poorly in this class and he is absolutely terrible. The content is impossible and there are no resources to help you. This class will kill your GPA for the rest of your college years. Good luck failing!
It's really not that bad. I never went to lecture and never studied, I got a good grade in the lab and never got over a 50 on the exams and still got a C+.
Not that hard at all. As long as you study you can pass the class with atleast a B. The labs aren't hard except for one that took way to long, and he is a very nice guy.
Where does one start with Jim Wingrave. This class is an utter nightmare. If u don't have an extensive knowledge of chemistry coming into this class, prepare to study hours on hours, & still fail his tests. The amount of material he makes you memorize for this class is ridiculous. Lecture manual is absolutely disgusting. u prob will cry every night
Might have a different view of Wingrave taking him for a masters class, but he was a very good professor. He has many years working in the field and is very knowledgeable, while sometimes a little forgetful. He wants students to succeed and doesn't make an already difficult class any more so. 2 exams, 1 paper, 1 group project. Overall nice man.
He is unbelievable. He pulls negative reviews off this site to make fun of them at the start. He shouldn't be teaching a Chem 103 course, he clearly doesn't want to, as he forces people to do stuff like memorizing tons of organic chemistry stuff, which we don't need. He also does all the lessons out of order from the other profs and labs.
My first-semester GPA at the UDel was tanked mainly because of prof. Wingrave. Prof. Wingrave is a nice man at least but his lectures are very confusing and not helpful. The textbook is more helpful than the lectures. He believes that students are the issue on why they do poorly in his course and that is sadly all not true. Take Chem108 freshman!!!
Professor Wingrave is super smart, and obviously knows practically everything there is to know about chem. With that being said it can be hard for him to dumb things down and teach entry level chem. This class is very difficult but you can get an A if you work very hard. If you study to learn the material and not the grade you will do well
Although Wingrave has an extensive knowledge of chemistry, he is not fit to teach adults that only experienced one year of chemistry. Sapling is a literal joke and does not help with the 4 exams given throughout the semester. He seems like a great guy but definitely does not exceed as a professor for teaching a general chemistry course.
The single worst teacher I have ever had. Whoever grades his tests makes mistakes, so it is worthwhile to go to his office hours and argue for points back. That being said office hours mean waiting in line for (in my experience) 1-2 hours. Overall he is an unreasonable man. IF YOU HAVE ANY CHOICE TAKE THE CLASS WITH A DIFFERENT TEACHER!!!
Wingrave isn't the best teacher so don't expect him to explain the material well. Take advantage of the tutoring sessions and the chem workshops, they definitely help. And having a group to study before an exam would help too! I would practice the old exams that he has on sakai since they are similar to the new ones. Lots of works to get that A.
Every monotone lecturer, tries to make it fun but it is boring. Sapling homework does not help on the exams. Goes through the lecture manual every fast. Tested on 5-6 lessons with mini lessons in them at once.
Class is literally a waste of time. I only went for the first month and then realized it was pointless. He just reads off the lecture manual. Do some of the Sapling (He'll tell u in class that it's not important - its not). I would recommend going to workshop, that actually helped a lot. Also, study from old tests online.
This class was meant to be an introduction to what a tough college class could be like. If you think you can slide with high school study habits you won't. Wingrave knows this and it's on you to put effort into his class. Everything he does is completely fair, it's a matter of adjusting to the college standard. He truly is a good professor.
This class is one of the hardest things you will ever have to do. No matter how much effort you put in the tests are impossible even though there is a curve. Lectures do not make sense half the time, do not take this class.
Although Wingrave is a cute old man, he is just not a good into to chem teacher. He goes through the lecture manual very quickly and often goes on tangents. Sometimes sapling is helpful. Definetly go to workshop to review and also go over questions that are similar to ones on the test. I would study from the old tests
He's just way too smart to teach an introductory level class. This is my second semester with him and its the same stuff: don't pay attention in lecture but show up for spontaneous clickers, fail the tests, do well in lab, trust the curve. Studying off of old exams does help a little but he designs his tests to be hard.
well, his exam don't have A if he keep his standard as usual. NEVER OFFENSE GOD!!!!!
Biggest issue is that he curves for some, and not for others. If you make sure that you get a 90/125 average on your exams and an A for lab, you'll end up like me with a B+ (and that was with a pretty high grade on the minor stuff). I've never heard of a professor that grades clicker questions for correctness and not participation, but that's Wing
Had this guy 7 years ago and was a workshop TA for him for 2 years. He's really a very nice guy, very affable and easy to talk to. For people worried about this class, make sure to go over the practice exams that are online or distributed before the exam - they are extremely representative of what you'll see.
Grading makes little to no sense. decides to make his tests crazy hard and adds a crazy curve instead of making exams reasonable. you studied for 40 hours the week before and scored a 23% on the exam? yeah somehow that might work out to be a B+
He teaches very old school and is not very aware of his surroundings. He assumes you have taken AP Chem before and basically know the entire class curriculum so he doesn't have to teach much. This class will tank your gpa, especially taking this class as a freshmen. Take another professor or try to take 107.
He's really nice and all, but if you're looking for a professor to explain actual concepts about chemistry, I would recommend taking another professor. The bright side to his class is that the current exams are EXTREMELY similar to the past ones. This fact saved my grade. Literally, just understand and study those and you should be fine.
Definitely the hardest class I've taken. Assumes everyone has taken AP chem (I took honors) and that this class is a review. Too much expected for a 100 class. Hard to fail the class, but also hard to get an A. He's proud if the test avg is a D, like 80% of the class fails the tests. Go to workshop, his office to get points back on tests, do HW.
Wingrave is a very nice man but just an awful professor. The exams are just outrageously hard, the average for the exams were; 36%,55%, and a 50%. There's a ton of Sapling HW questions and if you don't have chegg you should start early.
Don't bother attending lecture you won't know the material either way, except he does clickers exam week. His exams are also INSANELY hard. Attend all workshops, do well in lab, & do the hw; these will SAVE your grade. Plus he curves at the end. I got a 25%, 22%, and 9% on his exams and still managed to pass. Do better than me and you'll be fine.
This class was the hardest class I've ever taken. The lectures are confusing and his tests are ridiculously hard. Each average test grade was a failing grade. If you do not have to take him don't do it. If you have to just get help, get a decent lab grade, and do at least above average on each exam and you'll end up with a B.
He made me hate Chemistry. All of the things he tought made no sence and he acted like every student took AP Chem in highschool so he breezed through lectures. We even had to learn 2 lectures on our own for the final. The average grade, which he shows to the class after every exam, was a failing grade every time. He does an extremely generous curve
This class has been the hardest class I have ever had. I came expecting it to be easy like high school and I got my ass handed to me by the first test. I needed this to build a decent work ethic and time management. Wingrave may be hated by a lot students, but for those who want be something in life he is a necessity. GO TO CLASS AND OFFICE HOURS.
His tests are extremely challenging. He teaches you so much more information than needed for a general chemistry class, including Chemistry 2 and Organic Chemistry material, and puts the hardest trick problems on tests. You need to be very smart and work very hard to do well, which is possible. After getting an A, though, I am happy I had Wingrave.
He is very smart and knows his subject well but he teaches first year chem students like they are grad students. If you rewatch lectures and work through lecture sample problems you will do well. Memorizing everything he asks you is essential. Also go to office hours he almost always gives points back on exams . Also make sure to get clicker points
Wingrave is probably one of the worst profs at UD. I had him freshman fall and spring and he teaches things that should not be taught in an introductory chem class. Study like crazy. You don't really need to go to class but he does to clickers the week of exams. Know the lecture manual and memorize everything and you'll get by.
He doesnt teach you he basically expects you to watch most of the lectures and test are basically your only grade with averages around 40/124 on all of them. He also says he doesnt curve bit if he didnt no one would pass his class.
Professor Wingrave is AMAZING! Definitely the best teacher I have ever had hands down. The people that are complaining are just jealous because they wish they had 1/10 the amount of brain power as the legend and all-powerful Jimmy Wingrave. He is definitely a tough teacher, but he prepares you for the difficulty of college! Attend lecture.
Most awful class I've ever taken. Expect to get 40 out of 124 on exams. Course manual book is unclear, and I have no idea how to study for his tests.
Possibly the worst class I have taken at UD. Everyone fails his tests, yet he hasn't changed a thing about his teaching. Never got above a 50% on the tests and got a C+ in the class. Study old tests and do the sapling. Show up for random clickers. If u can take intergrated or with Compton, I would.
I have had the pleasure of taking Professor Wingrave's class for both Chem103 (fall) and Chem104 (spring). He has been the best teacher I could have possibly had. Although he may seem challenging at first, he is ultimately preparing his students for the rigorous courses in the future. I can proudly say that I am now ready to take on future courses.
Intelligent but an ineffective communicator. Lecture materials are outdated and wrong. The free-PDF text is worthless. Impossible to see during office hours because all of his students are there. Use the practice exams he posts but know that the answer key is always wrong. Make friends with your lab TA and pray that your lab grade will save you.
Way too hard for a general chem class and Wingrave doesn't help. Lectures are gibberish and he doesn't even know what class he is in sometimes. Clickers are random, only did them 3 times in the semester. Office hours are a hit or miss, he might be late to his hours or you just might wait and never get an answer since everyone is there.
Hardest class I've ever had. Had to teach myself everything. I usually went to class, but it was usually pointless because I wouldn't understand a thing. Only did clickers 3 times the whole semester. I had to work really hard and study days in advance to do okay on the tests. He curves the final grade which helped a lot. That was the only good part
Had him for 103 and 104. Mans is just not a good professor. He's a nice guy, but you basically teach yourself chemistry. Lots of online homework, test averages stay around 50-60 percent. Get a tutor to teach you the basics, so then you can follow along better. Take advantage of workshop, and if you know you have to take 104, take 103 with wingrave.
He is the worst professor. Not only did I email him 5 different times and not one of them was answered, but he kept messing up in class and we had to correct him. He does not teach, we basically teach ourselves with the homework and the workshops. He is the absolute WORST and I would recommend dropping right away (or switching) if you get him.
Jimmy was great. He loved Breaking Bad and it really showed in his teachings! I learned to love the simple things about chemistry such as cleaning up beakers and flasks. Although this may seem simple, he taught us about how truly delicate atoms are and how 1 simple change in a structure can change everything!
