He is lets the class talk and give their opinions on the art, like a critic room so it's not just a lecture and he practically tells you the answer to all of the questions on his test. As long as you go to class and take notes, you will have no trouble passing his class. He's also really funny and no text books needed!
I am in two of his classes right now and he is my favorite professor at Western. He is smart, funny and is willing to help you out on just about anything. Every lecture and seminar is super interesting and I love coming to class. He lets the students be a part of the lectures and in the seminar class he really values all of our input. Best prof.
I came into this class with absolutely no interest in art. Javier has very interesting, well planned out and hilarious lectures, and by the end of the quarter I found myself actually enjoying the content. I will be taking another class of his next quarter. If you need a humanities GUR try to take an AHI class with Javier.
Favorite teacher! And his accent is cute.
I really enjoy his connection to the students. He really wants to teach you and also do everything he can for you. He's a great teacher. Really funny too.
Took for a GUR and had no interest in art or art history at all but he makes it interesting! An easy humanities class. I'd definitely recommend him! Super funny guy who just wants you to succeed. Quizzestests are MC and he repeats the questions all the time so you learnremember a few things but those few things very well!!! Also no textbook
This class is great! Javier is really passionate and enthusiastic about Art History which made the class fun. There's no textbook. There's quizzes every Monday, but as long as you show up to the previous class its not bad. He recycles the questions on all the quizzes and tests, so they're the best study guides. Great GUR class!
Berzal's great. Point-blank tells you that he doesn't believe in grades. He's there to discuss art. After quiz 1, he starts reusing questions for the later quizzes and tests. Offers an extra credit paper up to 10% (yes, %) of your grade. As a visual learner, remembering answers with paintings came naturally, and the class was actually interesting.
As a foreign student I struggled with most of the lecture-based classes until I took Javiers 231 class. His lectures very interesting and engaging. Good, clear speech. Easy quizzes. No problem with understanding. He gives students extra points. I also got very positive experience from his 497 F class. I would recommend to take all his classes!
AMAZING PROFESSOR. ANY CLASS HE TEACHES IS WORTH TAKING.
ONE OF THE BEST CLASSES I'VE TAKEN AT WWU.
A really fun class and so easy. Javier is both funny and super smart. He is always on topic and his tests and a piece of cake. Would love to take more classes like this.
Fun and entertaining. Weekly quizzes. No textbook. Gives extra credit. One of the best teachers at Western.
Quiz every Monday - not too bad. Many of the questions are cumulative so as the weeks go on, the quizzes become easier. Also gives an extra credit paper... DO IT! takes a bit of time but is worth as much as an entire quiz (there aren't many so it helps a lot). Study sunday night before the quiz, you'll be gooooood.
Berzal is incredible. I took his class based on vague interest and now I'm considering an art history professor as a career. He gives incredible lectures that are essential to attend, because he doesn't post notes or anything online. If you want the A, gotta go to all the classes. That being said, he makes it easy to want to go.
Javier wants you all to succeed. His lectures are very straightforward and he is engaging. He tells you what is going to be on the quiz. Study and you will do fine.
Javier's 231 class is very simple. Just picture memorization and the details along with them. One cumulative quiz every Monday then a final on all. Sounds hard but you will see the questions on the quiz repeat themselves and mostly repeated in the exam. Cool accent.
Great lectures make the art easy to remember. Best GUR I've taken at Western.
Javier made this easily one of my favorite class. I took this as a last minute schedule filler and I am so glad I did. Javier was hilarious and made you want to learn the information. You don't need to know dates which was nice since there was an abundance of art that was required to know. TAKE THIS CLASS! You won't regret it!
This was my favorite class I've ever taken. I didn't miss a day of it because I never wanted to. He made me love art 10x more.
Clearly states what he wants you to know for tests every Monday which are cumulative. You have to put in work and study before everyone but if you go to class it shouldn't be a problem. Lectures are interesting and he's a hilarious teacher, i'd definitely recommend.
Great class! Well-structured and informative lectures. Expectations are very clear and quizzes are not hard if you go to class.
I had Javier for The History of Architecture and it was amazing. He knows how to keep you interested and intrigued by the subject matter. The class was super easy, all you have to do is show up and take notes and the quizzes are really easy. Couldn't say enough great things about this guy, you will love his accent
Interesting class and informative lectures. Very clear expectations and grading. Take home midterm and final, plus a couple of easy assignments. His courses fill up really fast, and it is clear why.
Javier is very passionate about architecture and makes this class amazing. There is a short test every week on the material of the week before, but it isn't anything too hard. No textbook, so everything comes from lectures, which are actually pretty great to attend. He puts asterisks next to buildings and terms that will be on the test.
Great teaching style. Very engaging. You'll actually enjoy going to class!
Javier is possibly the best professor on campus.
He's super, super attractive, really funny, and really, really, REALLY good at giving lectures-- but the best part is that he's SUPER passionate about his field. He obviously loves Art and Art History and he is excited to share it through teaching. Have fun and listen to him when he speaks- if you take notes and listen, you'll pass the tests fine.
Javier is hilarious and really wants you to learn. Art history can be a boring subject for many people but he makes it super interesting. Missing class will screw you over so always attend. Javier is the reason I decided to be an art history minor!
Javier has to be my favorite professor at WWU. His lectures are never boring and he is hilarious. He's very passionate about his teaching.
In a lot of ways Javier is an amazing teacher. His insights are interesting, and I found class engaging. However, BEWARE, make sure you know exactly what he wants on papers before presenting or turning any thing in, because trying to implement his advice on a draft is near impossible-his opinions are strong and difficult to predict or implement.
Javier is awesome. As others have said here, he just wants you to learn. He gives tons of opportunities to get points. Take home exams are tough but he's fair (he even asks you what grade you think you deserve!). Go to class, take good notes, and you'll be fine.
Javier is the best professor at Western. He really cares about the subject and makes it easy to learn/pay attention to. He is hilarious which makes class that much better. Material is super easy to learn and by the end of the quarter you have all of the answers to the final. I ended up with a 100% in the class. TAKE A CLASS WITH JAVIER.
Javier is a great professor. I was worried registering for the class because I'm not an Art major nor do I enjoy learning about history, but this class was interesting. I really enjoyed it. He gives a quiz every week based on the lectures, but they are really easy. As long as you got to class and take good notes you should be fine.
Took this class as a GUR, ended up being my favorite class this quarter. Super engaging lectures that make the material very interesting. If you are in class and you listen and absorb the information, tests are easy. Highly recommend to anyone who needs a short humanities credit.
Amazing Lectures. It was very easy to follow and he made sure that the class knew what was going to be on the quiz. Be sure to take notes and you will do fine on the quizzes!
-Dazzling survey lecturer. A's for everyone. If you're just needing a GUR, he's your guy. -Still interesting and a good prof at the 300 level. Obviously the stakes are higher, but it's totally doable. No tests, only essays. -400 level: be prepared to cry tears of blood. Just don't do it. He is condescending and his disdain for students is evident
The course was one of the best I have taken at Western. For a difficult topic like philosophy of art, Javier made the it accessible. Javier's seminars are conversation based, and gives students plenty of freedom and autonomy. Take his seminars if you want a challenge and be treated like an adult, but don't expect hand holding.
Best professor on campus!!! Upper level course here was Art in the Age of Contact, 10/10 recommend. Hw is your choice of things to do based on a point system, includes extra points for perfect attendance. Get ready to write down every word he says though for the mid & final, they're 10 art analyses of your choice artworks 500 words.
This class was very easy but also very fun. I looked forward to class, and I wished it was more frequent. Definitely would take again.
You need to go to class, or get notes, to pass. Its a survey class so he has slideshows that he uploads to Canvas, but theyre just images. Hes really funny & handsome too! He will tell you what will be on the weekly quizzes so just make flash cards & youll be fine. I ended the class with 110% b/c of extra credit too. Its an easy HUM credit.
Lacks understanding of students work load, and expects his class to take precedence over other classes. Values writing ability over deeper critical thought. Accidentally assigned 120 page reading on top of long readings 2-4x/per week. Pop quizzes because hes having to talk to much. Every minute is like pulling teeth. Half the class dropped.
Amazing professor! He's super passionate about what he's talking about and it shows. However, if you miss multiple classes with him, you're going to be very lost. He is explicit in his lectures but lacking in his slides that he uploads to canvas. Also you'll probably have a crush on him
I had taken multiple lower-division classes with Javier and enjoyed them a lot, but this upper-division class is in the style of "break you down to build you back up again", although I'm still waiting to be built back up. He expects students to write, read, and discuss like they already have PhDs.
Super funny and made the class enjoyable. Is clear on what is going to be on the quizzes.
Javier was fantastic! He made the lectures very interesting and you can see he has a clear passion for the subject. The quizzes are super easy if you make flashcards. The accent is a bonus
He focus on a smaller selection of material than most teachers which I think makes the lecture course more meaningful and easier to digest. H O W E V E R, he is the quintessential my-PhD-makes-me-a-snob teacher. Id never take anything besides a lecture class w/ him because 1-on-1 interaction with him is miserable. Incredibly condescending
Outstanding teacher. Never boring. Super clear on whats going to be on the tests. Thought I'd hate art but it is one of my favorite classes ever!
Really great teacher, super clear and funny! My favorite teacher so far and his lower level classes at least are very interesting and easy. Just show up! He seems to know a lot about his field and is very passionate about it, which makes for a all around wonderful professor!
Javier is one of the best professors I've had at WWU. He has clear expectations and concise organization of the class. If you take notes and review , you'll pass easily. He's so funny and a great prof who is truly passionate about Art History. Even if you're not interested in art history, he makes it interesting. I highly recommend :)
Javier is clearly very experience and has a lot of knowledge, which means that the class is never boring. There are weekly cumulative quizzes, but I actually really appreciated this because it means that you have no choice but to stay on task and it makes it so that the final isn't so bad because he reuses questions. He's also a really funny guy!
Javier is very knowledgeable about renaissance art history. His lectures are very important and detail packed so taking notes is vital. His accent takes some getting used to but hes also pretty funny. The weekly quizzes can be challenging but theyre the only thing that makes up your grade besides the final. Great prof and class
Humanities courses are not usually easy for me but Javier made art history really interesting and easy to follow. He made it very clear when certain topics were important to remember for quizzes. Had weekly quizzes on the material but were easy if you went to lecture. Highly recommend this course and prof if you have GURs to fulfill.
Javier is an awesome professor, definitely one of my favorites at WWU. The course materials are extremely well organized and easy to access on Canvas, and his lectures are amazing. There are weekly quizzes but they're really helpful in having all the necessary information stick in your head. Bonus: Javier has a cool accent and is really funny.
Javier is absolutely amazing!!! This is my second class I've taken with him and he is by far one of my favorite professors at Western. I was always excited to come to class because I knew whatever we were talking about would be fascinating and intriguing. Also super easy class, especially if you're interested in the subject matter.
Javier is one of my favorite profs at Western. His lectures are super interesting and I'm constantly so amazed with how intelligent he is. This is my third class with him and it was definitely some work... but so worth it. I've learned SO much. He's really funny too which makes lectures go by so fast. When I say a gem I mean it. Highly recommend.
Super easy big-class lectures but also really interesting.
Berzal is very passionate and loves what he teaches! He wants you to pass. Class is only 2x a week, with a test every thurs. Berzal is very nice, but slightly unforgiving when it comes to tests. The class was easy to follow because of his passion for it
Javier was awesome! Super friendly and obviously knew what he was talking about without being too cocky. I wasn't expecting this is become my favorite class this quarter due to it being a GUR, but it was! If you're looking for a class for a GUR take it with him for sure! The class is really straight forward and he makes it that way for good reason.
I did not find prof berzal helpful at all i really struggled in his class and he was no help at all.
He thinks very highly of himself. Tests every week and high stakes. Not easily accessible (hates when you email him). Tests are made to be slightly hard but you'll do okay if you study hard. All tests are cumulative he says. Lecture is very slow paced. Stops in the middle of sentences to walk and drink water roughly 15-20 times each lecture. AVOID
This class is great. Lectures are very informative. If you come to class and take notes youll do fine v
Javier is the absolute best professor I've ever had. I have no idea what the 1 ratings are talking about, he's super accessible and has no problem talking to people outside of class. He knows what he's talking about and you can tell he's really passionate about the subject. Also he doesn't hate when you email him? 10/10 would recommend to anyone
Javier is a super funny, charming and relatable professor! I thoroughly enjoyed his lectures, and I always looked forward to class time! We didn't have a midterm or a final, and just had one quiz every week. He was very generous with grading, so it was not a hard class to get an A. Studying was still very important though! So show up to class!
Javier is my favorite prof at WWU so far. He has a talent for lectures, they flow and are genuinely interesting. He is very well versed on the subjects he teaches and its clear he really cares about art and art history. The weekly tests are almost impossible to fail and easy to get an A on. Just show up and take notes. He drops one quiz grade.
This guy is a terrible instructor. His class feels like it was made for middle schoolers in the way it was coordinated i.e. for tests etc., though the stuff he discussed was very weird, I felt his lectures were creepy. His posted readings were creepy too. I don't recommend this class as this guy goes way out there with strange topics.
Professor Berzal is the reason why I became an Art history minor, her lectures are engaging, interesting, and hilarious. She is very straightforward and clear about her expectations regarding weekly tests but makes the information youre responsible for very obvious and all you have to do is take notes and study a little. 1 of the best profs at WWU
The lectures and quizzes were heavily linked and while attendance was not MANDATORY, if you missed class there was a lot of important information you would be missing. Otherwise this class was great, I loved the lecture heavy teaching and the quizzes were cumulative so there were lots of repeated questions.
This is one of my favorite classes and professors I've ever had! Prof Berzal is hilarious and this was a super chill class. You do have to show up to the lectures otherwise you won't understand all the details on the weekly quizzes, but the lectures are fun and the quizzes aren't very difficult. I would absolutely recommend this class to anyone!
Prof Berzal really care about the subject matter and gave interesting and engaging lectures. I wish there were 5 credit HUM classes for art history because as a non major I can only fit in one of her classes. Grade is dependent on a once weekly quiz which is easy A if you take good notes in class and give like 20 minutes of review before hand.
Jimena is my favorite human being of all time. A direct quote from a lecture: "All of my professors in school cared more about how hard their work was over how well their students did. I make my assignments open because students succeed more when they write about something they care about. Be the person you needed when you were younger." A Woman!
Jimena's one of those professors that actually make learning about history interesting and not boring/ a drag. For once, I actually remember the material she goes through. She's very straightforward about how she grades and what to expect in quizzes. I wish all the A/HIS professors were like her. Definitely recommend taking her!
If you have any interest in art history, you'll probably enjoy this class. Dr. Berzal is amazing and very funny. She genuinely cares about her students' success and learning. The lectures are interesting and grading criteria is clear. There is a quiz every Monday from the lectures which is very easy if you come to class and study a bit beforehand.
Jimena is one of the best professors I've had at Western. Very engaging lectures. She gives you many ways to get a good grade... all exams are take home and she gives the questions weeks before they're due. She expects you to be self-sufficient so you have to keep up w/o hand holding. But she's understanding of personal emergencies, health issues.
I've taken Jimena in a survey and two seminar. She's knowledgeable and passionate and a bit quirky. The seminar is very different than the surveys.. readings are hard plus a research paper.. and she expects you to be independent. She's lenient at least and cares about your success. Just be ready for no hand holding in the seminars.
If you can take a class with Jimena do. She cares about the students she has but she doesn't become overbearing. I really appreciate that she has empathy but it isn't easily cowed by requests. 10/10 super knowledgable and overall awesome instructor.
Wonderful! Professor Berzal de Dios sparked a deep love of architecture within me, and I was truly excited to attend each of her classes. She's very clear about her expectations for students, and goes beyond the content to make you think deeper about the world and your duty to it. A deeply inspirational gem whom I hope to have as a teacher again!
The lectures were very boring and difficult to pay attention to. You have to take notes from the lecture, not slides, which I found difficult. It didn't start with a lot of homework, but in the second half of the class, there was so much. There was too much homework, and absolutely no feedback was given.
I would take any and every class this woman teaches, genuinely my favorite thing in the world, she's so entertaining and so funny and in a lot of ways the love of my life. Attendance isn't graded but all the tests/exercises are in person and you will not do well on the tests if you don't show up
She is a pretty good professor, this class covers the Renaissance to now but she clearly enjoys and knows the most about the older side of this range, 1900 to now was covered in a single lecture. You are graded on 10 things, all worth 10% of your grade: 4 'exercises' short in class writings, 4 quizzes multiple choice, and 2 discussion boards.
This class was a seminar on rococo art. There's a good amount of readings per week, homework, and you write a catalogue. It was challenging but very interesting. Jimena clearly wants you to be prepared for a career and gives good feedback. Come to every class, ask questions, and talk to other students.
Jimena is an amazing professor and she's clearly passionate about art. Lectures are engaging and informative and the class is very well structured.
This class covers art from prehistory to the renaissance. There are four quizzes, four group exercises in class, and two online discussions. It's not a hard class at all if you go to her lectures and take good notes.
loved her a lot she was always very clear on what she wanted and i was never confused by her instructions
