Had him for discrete math. The material is hard and sometimes it's hard to understand him, but he is very helpful. Just go see him outside of class during his office hours and he will re-explain it to you.
Difficult to understand, and has a difficult time understanding us, I think. Still, a very nice guy, very smart, and very willing to help if you JUST ASK!!! Students who don't ask for help don't deserve assistance. STUDY!!!!
I really enjoyed this teacher. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed Dr. Tians teaching style so much, I took Math 2315, Math 2414, and Math 2420. I would recommend Dr. Tian to any students who must take these courses.
Students cannot understand him at all. He doesn't understand questions that are asked of him. When he writes on the board it turns out being a jig saw puzzle of complicated formulas. He gives questions on quizes with material that was not covered for the quiz. Over half of my class dropped.AVOID HIM
if u can understant, good. Hard to understant.
very hard to understand. i had a hard time with him, he cannot explain the material because he does not know what you are asking. this class is for those who want to show themselves how to do the work. his tests are short but very difficult. do not take!!!
UGH! i hate this class. i dont understand wat he is saying and by that i mean his english..he says perablers...wtf? save yourselves and do not take his classes..im sorry but...no!
He is a good professor. Do your homework and prepare for class and you should be fine. He is a nice person. The class is not too hard or easy.
you have to listen hard to understand but he can help when you need it
Tian is a wonderful guy, he's funny and really cares about his students. I had trouble getting use to his accent.I wouldn't take him unless you are prepared to spend alot of time in the CTLC. Mr. Tian's style is to go through the motions, and some HW problems, but I he doesn't really explain why you do something. Always willing to help if you ask
Terrible at explaining the lecutures. Take this class if you are going to teach yourself. Waste of time and money.
This class was awful. He is very hard to understand due to his strong accent. His notes are scattered all over the board so it is hard to read. Very nice guy, just the language barrier to hard to deal with. Do not take unless you want to spend everyday in CTLC. I am very good in Math and I had to drop his class. Do not reccommend.
this guy is hard to understand and if you ask him to repeat something he gets mad. Doesn't know anything about the computer program that hes supposed to be teaching and his tests are really hard and confusing. Waste of time.
He is hard to understand, but if you prepare for his quizzes it's not too bad. His quizzes come from the notes and his test come from the quizzes. I wouldn't recommend him b/c he is very boring and I do spend a lot of time in tutoring.
DON'T TAKE HIM!!!! im a math major and im failing his class right now. you dont learn ANYTHING in his class. you cant understand him and his board notes are not legible. his tests are REALLY hard and confusing, and only have about 8 questions on them, so if you miss one of two you make a bad grade. DON'T DO IT!!!
You will get used to his accent quickly, notes are scattered, tests and quizes are short so if you miss a few you will suffer, but many of the tests come from his quizes.ONLY take him if you have a strong math background or you are willing to work.STUDY his notes and quizes like a madman, and do your homework.Made a C and worked hard,Take Ms. Hall!!!
Pi = Tian. If you have a choice don't take him. He will teach you how loser you are by talking about his best student who went to Rice and Standford Universitys and many others. But don't forget he is not the one who sent those kids to great schools, they were smart already. I never study in his class or do HW butI got B. Trust NOTES! NOT HW.
computer teaches more then professor. home work is a completion grade. tests are really, really hard!
Heavy accent but understandable. Attendance important for your grade through quizzes and his thorough boardwork. Generous with partial credit, especially late in the semester. Study book examples, as he likes to use them on quizzes. Major complaint is that it was very hard to pick out exactly what would be on the tests.
uhm where do i start? he has a very strong accent and he is not generous with his grading. the plato learning lab does all the teaching and he cant explain anything to you if you ask him. he doesnt give reviews or extra credit or make up exams and he is always telling you that you "cunt" do something. DO NOT TAKE HIM
He has a very thick accent that is hard for some people to get past. He didn't understand what was being asked 9/10 times a student had a question in class. He teaches lower level concepts as though they are incredible breakthroughs, so be prepared to feel like you're being spoken to as a 1st grader.
Mr. Tian's class feels like a military atmosphere. For him discipline is the utmost. Doesn't respond to student questions. You are discouraged to ask questions. A few exams are very much or pretty hard. It'd a no fun class. But you will catch up some subject only because the text book is good. Otherwise you will fail.
Accent is alright. His tests are HARD but they follow his lectures,so attendance is very important.Plus,he will give out some bonus points if you obtain full attendance. You'll have to work really hard though(read BOTH your textbook and notes THOROUGHLY!but you can skip HW,it's not helping much)in order to get a decent grade. Fair game after all...
Avoid his class if you can!
This guy is very hard to understand with his strong accent. I have NO stinking clue what my grade and I don't think he does either.
he is a little hard to understand and gives a lot of homework but if u pay attention o his lecs and home work u will dp good on quizes and tests are similar to quizes. you have to work hard to get good grade
I got B in his class. He is very discipline, he is not fun.He is good teacher, but you must pay attention to understand what he say. the atmosphere in class like black clouds. a lot home work to do, quizze every week.
he is a wonderfull teacher and very strict about attendance. helpfull too!!
He knows everything in Math, but he can not teach it. He needs to help student to understand, and he need to stop and explain if a student ask a question.
Dr.Tian isn't that bad. He knows what he's doing although he doesn't understand most of ur question, n u have to pay patience. He's really willing 2 help. Dun take his regular sem. this class is too easy
I took Dr Tian for Differential Equations. I am a math major !! He is the best I ever had!!! I have learned a great deal in his class!! VERY nice guy and cares about the student success. You just have to show interest in the subject.
he means well...but i just couldnt understand him.
Awful!!! Might know his math, but I corrected him more in a semester than he did me. Never once did a week go by that I did not have to correct some mistake he made because fellow students were lost. More than once, others thanked me for helping them understand what he was trying to do.
I don't mean to give such a negative rating, but, man, this guy deserves it. His accent was so thick, half the time, I couldn't understand a word he was saying. He assigns way too much homework and prowls the room like an eagle, waiting to get on your case if he sees you not doing anything even for a second. I had to drop it. He was that bad.
Must attend class everyday but if you do you get extra credit. I am still taking him right now and feel like I am doing very well in the class. His accent is not bad at all, I understand every word he says. Very smart guy who really does try to help his students. Go to class everyday, study your notes, do your homework and youll get an A for sure.
Don't take him you will not understand what his saying!
If you are taking this professor for a required course that you have to take and do want to, such as college algebra, the you will not like him. On the other hand, if you are taking higher level courses, such those required for engineering and science majors, the you will like his class. He does have an accent, that can easily be adapted to after th
don't take him,he picks and helps the students he wants, don't give any make up test even if you were sick!!! hard to understand due to is strong accent. I DON't RECOMMEND HIM AT ALL.
All he does is talk about punishing the class, I would at least expect him to punish if he had put effort in teaching us. He just talks to the board and does not know how to answer students questions, also not very understanding. Beware, you will very likely fail the class.
don't take him,he picks and helps the students he wants, don't give any make up test even if you were sick!!! hard to understand due to is strong accent. I DON't RECOMMEND HIM AT ALL.
I am a straight A student who received my first B in this class after 76 credit hours of college. I have never dedicated so much time and effort into studying for one class. This man is hard to understand and unclear in his expectations/lectures. The final looked like it was written for another class and was purposefully complex and ambiguous.
He knows math, but does not know how to teach it. Acts like we know everything
I'm a straight A student and have never had to drop a class, but this class was extremely hard because of the teacher. Besides having a strong accent, he doesn't explain the concepts clear enough to get a good grade on his tests.
He is awesome. The tests are difficult on T/F questions, others are not difficult at all. His accent is strong, but you still understand only if you concentrate to listen him. The final exam is a scantron through the semester. All of things on the tests are on lectures. In overall, I made more than 100 percent.
Great instructor. I like what he taught in class. I like proofs. Those are basic parts to get on the next level. Even though I didn't make A, I learned a lot. I think you shouldn't have blamed for him. In U.S. statistic, only 5% students can understand from lectures, 10% in reading books, 40% in discussing in groups, and 80% when you help someone.
Once you get used to the accent, he's great. Extremely thorough.
Do your homework, take notes, show up for class. And study of course.
TAKE NOTES ON PROOF!!! He teaches fundamentals which is really great. He like to show proof of how equation derive. (i.e. not just saying (Cosx)^2 + (Sinx)^2 = 1) Had him in Summer. Quiz and test were timed not sure if it was because fast-paced, but he had to squeeze 6 chapters in a 1 1/2 month.
He has a very thick accent. HE honestly is not that bad when it comes to test. He gives partial credit and bug curves on the test. I got a high B in the class when based on tests and my knowledge I think I deserved a D. He is better than some of the professors that there are for trig.
The course was an easy one so I got an A. His teaching methods are all over the place, but I didn't pay attention anyways. Strong Chinese accent. He's nice though.
Took him for Linear Algebra. He does a great job teaching an abstract class. Proofs are his world, and he emphasizes the "why" instead of the answer. Used Wiley plus (horrible program). Homework was tedious, but his tests were over what he covered in class. This course took effort, but he grades generously and gives extra credit for attendance. =)
He is the worst professor i have come across. He lacks the ability to make us understand the material and he does not really care how his students are doing in his class. I think 50% of what students learns in college is from teacher.I regretted that although i gave my 100% i was still at 50% because he didn't do his part.
Take good notes using diff color pens. Quiz every week. Tests are not that bad. Final straight from the previous quizzes and tests. He is not bad. Good Luck!
It was a terrible mistake taking him for Differential Equations. If only i came here first. I took great notes and study my behind off and still had to drop the class. The test was timed and way harder then the HW problems. HW problems not similar to test. He doesn't return test for this class. He know his stuff but can't teach. We r not graduates
The worst professor I've ever had, & I have 98 credit hrs. He doesn't explain very well and is all over the board when giving examples. You get lost following him because his examples are so messy. He knows his stuff, but is incapable of explaining it clearly. You'll be learning everything on your own. Insane amount of homework and very hard tests
His accent and lack of communication abilities make it nearly impossible to learn from him. I learned 95% of the material on my own, even after paying attention in class. Has a difficult time explaining thinks simply and loves to go on tangents about former students successes. Kind of entertaining to listen to, but not in an educational manner.
Dr. Tian knows his stuff, but does NOT know how to teach it. He is very nice, but not a good professor!
Terrible teacher. I was an A student until I took his class. You cant understand what he says and does not grade on the level he teaches.
Dr. Tian is very demanding in his courses. Expect to do a ridiculous amount of homework per section. There are no test reviews. He really knows the subject, but has a hard time communicating ideas and concepts. Around 50% has dropped so far into the 6th week. I would expect many more to drop after the 2nd test coming up. I recommend ANYONE ELSE!
I would encourage students to look at some other campuses in the DCCCD. Do not settle for a teacher like this one because he sets up his course in a manner where more than half of the class drops and who knows if everyone left will pass by the end of the school year. Another math teacher even warned me not to take this teacher but I didn't listen.
An overall ok class, lots of work, professor is no help. I made a B+ because I took the class with a friend and we studied together. Tests are fairly easy if you do all the homework and quizzes. His lectures are no help at al, just showed up to class and did the work on my own. If you don't mind teaching yourself this is the class for you!
I made an A in this class but please know he is not an easy teacher. You have weekly quizzes and tons of homework but if you pay attention in class and take lots of notes it becomes easier. Tests and finals are taken directly from the quizzes and he tells you what will be on the exam during lecture.
I can say that he enjoys his job, because for whatever reason he loves math. However the same cannot be said for teaching, because he would then probably find a way to be passable at it and he isn't. If you have trouble with either bad accents or understanding math, avoid this course at all costs.
If you're taking DiffEq do the homework in the book it will be in the test. Thick accent but if you paying attention you can understand the chapter much faster than reading the book. Final is hard and random. He does curve and +2% to your grade if you have perfect attendance.
I thought I signed up for a lecture class.. guess not. everything is computer based.. even the teaching. well, he does a 30 minute lecture, but the words that come out of his mouth is jibberish, due to the fact he doesn't know English 2 quizzes a week plus an exam every 4 weeks. test and assignments are online. no help and horrible teaching.......
professor Tian is hard to understand, but eventually you will catch on. i think the class is easy because we were located in a computer lab and their were short lectures throughout the semester. he is helpful and very encouragng. he is a big Cowboys fan, so he tends to use the phrases "fumble" and "interception" pretty corky, but i admire him.
He is very hard to understand, he has a a very thick accent. He is a really good teacher and by the end of the first week I was able to understand him fairly well. The important thing about this class is that the work is online tests are on paper. Also if you have a hard time understanding him there is an option online that will walk you thru it!
He walks into the room and says nothing. Writes on the board for 45 minutes, turns around, and blasts you with a thick Asian accent for a short 15 minutes. After the excruciating 15, you are left with an hour on your own to fend for yourself and figure out your homework. Don't bother asking him or your neighbor questions.. he just gets frustrated.
.I thought Professor Tian would explain on the board and have lecture. When the course said lecture i thought it was lecture. But his class was the opposite because everything was computer based. It is cool that he had examples on there but also i think it would help if he did a review before every class. But he doesnt not.
I'm taking this class online and it is very hard!! You will not have a life because your life will consist of MATH HOMEWORK!!! I've never had this much homework in my life! And this class is hard! When I email him and ask him a question he just says keep going lol whatever that means so I basically have given up because he is no help at all!
He doesn't know how to teach. He made too many mistakes and brags about one of his students who got an scholarship. Not organized. It's sad Richland will not fire him just because making students retake classes twice means more money for Richland. He has no feelings and doesn't care about his students. Heavy accent makes it harder to understand.
Tian knows the math but does not know how to teach. Test are based from textbook HW questions not online HW. He does not provide good feedback on test. Class started off with 30 students and ended with less than 10.
This is my worst decision for choosing him since there is no other choice. If you looking this class can help you in the future for your engineer major, don't take him. His lecture is confusing from the beginning to the end, he always talk how smart and great he is during the lecture. You can try it, if you want to find someone to punch.
First, Don't look at my grade because I earned this grade by my self and It would not matter if I had this teacher because I studied on my own. DONT TAKE THIS TEACHER. YES he knows math very good but he DOES NOT know how to teach math no way. Please look for other teacher. TAKE A CLASS ONLINE better than going to this teacher lecture.
Absolutely uncaring and unhelpful in every single possible way.
He is old school. Writes all over the board, very hard to follow. NO REVIEW, 1st test is HARD on purpose to set the tone. (will only give half class period) then lecture after. FInal is MASSIVE!! Test question are similar and NO HINT, just says: "solve dif. equa." Home work is different from test. you will not be ready for his tests. only 2 got A
DO NOT TAKE with him. The first class he spends time talking about how smart his father was and how smart his daughter is. He has very limited vocabulary and he does know English very well. Does not respond to you email at all. I don't know but he thinks all the engineering is about his course and if you pass you are smart. can't even communicate
He is difficult to understand and goes way to fast. If you are bad a math I strongly suggest finding a different teacher.
Avoid like the plague! Don't take this professor online! Very unorganized and you will have assignments on subjects you haven't and won't learn for weeks out. He can't even respond to simple emails with correct info. His syllabus is completely off. He will direct you to tutoring for questions about syllabus or due dates. Worst I've ever taken.
Prof. Tian is quite a character. Loves to say things like "don't be a scared" and "keep going!". He writes all over the board in no order. Exams are heavily based on his lectures, which he doesn't post anywhere so you must take good notes. He can be funny at times and encourages students. Diff EQ is a hard class and he doesn't make it easy.
Thick accent makes it difficult to understand; teaches his own areas his own ways; very messy, not good at responding to questions asked in class; be ready to work hard for it; does not always go by syllabus; difficult exams, strict grader; rushes through difficult material; would not take him again. not recommended for those weak in math.
Dr. Tian really knows the material. if it's the first time taking him, it will take you two weeks to get along with his accent . He is not good at understanding your questions and is not always able to reply. His writers on the board. i am really comfortable with it. his exams are a bit challenging.
I have no idea how he is even a professor still. Do not take him online! Homework is due everynight (sometimes you have a lot of questions). Very hard with grading and counts off for everything. His final exam review, which is mandatory, is 51 questions. Keep in mind you have homework due everyday still. KEEP AWAY.
he is someone who teaches as if you already know the material. one thing he is very good at is breaking concepts down step by step. However, it never helps because his accent makes it hard to understand. There were many time I found my self looking back at failed quizzes and realizing that the problems were either the same as lectures or similar.
This is the absolute worst professor i have ever had! Wouldnt tell me what i was doing wrong with the tests so i could learn from my mistakes instead just kept saying go see a tutor. Worlds worst professor! Take ANYONE ELSE for this course!
He gave me extra time to submit my homework every time I needed. He is easy to reach by email and replies quickly. :)
+ EXTRA CREDIT (only 2% for FULL ATTENDANCE) if you miss class only 1 time, ok you will not have extra credit. + NO REPLACE GRADE OF TESTS (don't think that your lowest test's score will be changed by the same score of final test. + NO ANY NOTES ON EXAM (have to remember all things of Cal I, II, III, and your current Math class)
This proffesor knows his stuff. His quizzes are tough, I failed many, but neccesary to get an A on the test. Any question you have, he knows the answer. The homework is very helpful, do it ALL, just buy the access code, no book. I got an A through dedication of knowing all the information and understanding lectures. You got to earn your grade.
So I am taking this guy for calculus and he is amazing. I was so bad at math before, but now I am enlightened. Aside from teaching math, he also uses some legendary words and sentences such as: "Goody" and "keep going" and "Touchdown" and some other things. To pass this class, you just have to enter the building and find the key because life is ...
This Professor is different from others because he teaches the concepts of calculus, not just how to plug and chug numbers. If you pay attention in class, and study the notes over lecture, you WILL succeed. If you rely on homework to past tests, you WON'T succeed. Good teacher to me. English he is learning, but bearable. Oh yea, and "TOUCHDOWN!"
LecturesQuizzesTestsA. Plain and simple! Dr. Tian is tough, but EVERYTHING comes from his lectures. You must study and practice problems. He is there for you with any questions you might have. His catch phrases are amazing! "Goodie!", "Take Easy!", "Keep going!" The weekly quizzes, while a pain, will be your salvation. GOOD LUCK! :)
Professor Tian seems every caring and responds to emails and grades promptly. The homework problems give great preparation for the exams, which are overall fairly easy; and the online instruction explains the concepts very simply and clearly, giving examples of the types of problems you will run into and detailing how to solve them.
horrible does not know how teach. 0/10 do not recommend
I took him for MATH 2420 online flex term. We had homework assignments almost every day. Tests were online and some were similar to the homework questions or the review questions. His tests are long. He does not give you feedback on what you did wrong and he did not have lecture notes or powerpoints. It was a learn it yourself type of class.
I do not recommend for anyone who struggles with math. He is good at teaching the subject but not good at answering questions if you are confused easily. Homework is easy A. Quizzes and tests are more difficult. However, there are no surprise test/quizzes.. Final Exam is comprehensive (whole course). Attendance is important!
I took Math 1314 & 1316 with him online. Everything will be in the MyMathLab. Do the homework and note the review quizzes in your notebook. In the exam, 95% of the questions directly come from the review, just different values. After taking the test, you have to send the paper by email. Take him, you will pass easily.
I took his Calculus I class. If you attend every class and follow his exam reviews, (usually he gives reviews before each exam) you will make a good grade. I honestly wasn't in class from time to time, but making an A was not that difficult.
I took the online college algebra course. The homework is easy, it's just the tests that are hard. I got really bad test grades and am unsure of why because the test questions are the same as the review just different values and I would always get the review right but miss them on the test. I tried reaching out for explanation but didn't get any.
Took the online course, lots of studying and homework due almost everyday, as long as you understand how to get the answers and review youll be good
Very tough grader. Test review grades seem to count towards the test grades. Grading criteria is unclear. He assigned almost double the amount of homework he usually does during the last week of the course and sent us 5 emails reminding us to drop the class on the drop day. Beware of this teacher's unpredictable behavior and cryptic communication.
This teacher is not for the weak. I gotta admit my ego inflated a bit after completing this challenging course. If you do all the homework and ace the test reviews then you should be good to go for the tests. Written tests showing your work must be scanned and submitted. There are some short written assignments as well. May strength be your guide!
Took his Differential Equations course, and it was worth it. His lecture is very organized, he does know what he is doing. He is kind of a tough grader, but he is flexible enough to give y'all second chance or drop one test that you got the lowest score on. Homework and tests are not that heavy. He is friendly.
Sometimes he is hard to follow, but he really knows what he is doing. Now if you don't have a SOLID foundation in Cal I, you won't do well. You also really need to take notes and do the homework. There's a quiz every Friday. Make sure to practice the material!!!
One word for him "HORRIBLE". First of all, he didn't teach you at all, just gave you a bunch of homework. When I emailed him to ask a question about homework, he answered it and told you seeing other online tutors. Test was too long to finish. I love Math so much and I'm not lazy (GPA 3.9) but I had to drop this class since I couldn't handle it.
He shouldn't be a teacher honestly. I guess Richland wants to keep him since many students had to drop and take it again (Richland can make more money). They shouldn't let bad teachers like him stay here to mess up student's future. You have to study and do everything by yourself - so why we have to pay him when he doesn't teach you anything?!
He does not give clear answers when you ask, no exceptions or extensions are ever made. In my personal opinion, he is the worst professor to have. would not recommend anyone to take him.
Never take him. I got put into his class because the course I was enrolled in didnt have enough people and he is a terrible professor. Gives no feedback or help. I had him online and he provides no reason as to why you got bad grades on the test when you know that you got the answers right.
Did the 4 wk summer class for dif equations & it was horrible. Professor was a very tough grader & didnt give any feedback on grades or reasoning for your grade or how they grade. 3 exams out of our 4 exams had a class average of 45%, 60%, and 65%. & Didnt even curve the final grade even with such bad test averages. Dont take class with this prof.
Dr. Tian was pretty helpful, taking any math course online sucks, and I took 8-week course to boot! (would NOT recommend the 8-week course unless you are ready to do HW for 2-3 hrs EVERYNIGHT to stay on pace) With that being said, its all about the homework, if you do all of it until you get 100% (you get 3 attempts per Q) you will do fine.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, I can only take online courses. Differential Equation is one of the courses I need for my degree. He has a horrible syllabus and the way asks for you to email you written work in the most cryptic way. I love math and I am a good mathematician, but he doesn't care if you don't follow protocol.
He never taught, never put in grades, and did not let us see what we got wrong on our exams. The worst professor I have ever had. He never answered my emails. His quizzes are basically tests and he was not helpful. PLEASE don't take this professor.
Class taken online during pandemic. Syllabus dates was not updated. Tests announced by surprise. Simply put, if you work full time or have any external obligations, you will fail. long assignments are often back to back, and reviews do little to prepare for the exam. Use Schaums' outlines over Zill, and make integration automatic to proceed.
Ok so the work load is very very heavy but he is also very sympathetic and gives extensions for homework if you have a valid reason. Trig in general is really hard so can't really blame him for that part lol. tests are on lockdown browser but they're all questions similar to the homework ones.
Just don't take him. He's possibly the worst professor I've taken and he's even worse over online. I do not recommend him for any class as he really doesn't give a dam about anything or the class at all.
This guy made me griiinddd for my A. I got my A on the last day of class. His class was disorganized and I had to send several emails before videos for the class were even opened. There are better choices out there but if he's your only option well good luck
Quite literally the worst class ive ever taken in my academic career. The professors response to all complaints is "this course is hard". Shows no compassion towards students, and gives huge workloads without any second thought. I only wish i could go back in time and not enroll in this course. My mental and physical health would have thanked me
If you do not have a good foundation on calc it is nearly impossible to pass, be ready for 4-6hrs a week in just weekly assignments on the low side. Goodluck, this is the worst class Ive taken
Others might have seen professor Tian as a good professor, but honestly, I would never take a class with him again. His homework is in my Math Lab only but his lectures are not clear at all. I did not understand anything he said. Even though I got an A but I worked very hard and attended tutoring to get that. I would say never take a class for him.
HEED MY WARNING: DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN. he did not have a single lecture. EVERYTHING I learned was from actual good teachers from youtube. When I emailed him questions he could not answer them at all as his English was horrible. He even submitted grades wrong and didn't change til he probs saw everyone in his class failing. Stay away.
This class was very test heavy, I think a little >70% of your grade comes from exams. He gives really good exam reviews though. For the first time, I had to drop a class to prevent getting a C. You have to be very prepared to teach yourself, and any missed assignments is detrimental! Overall, this class is hard.
Probably the worst teacher possible... Zero lecture notes, zero lecture recordings, does not reply to emails. Written work for exam is used to show proof of work rather than using it for extra points. What a joke! Avoid at all costs. This man is the perfect example of a Professor who does not care about his students.
He really is a smart person, but not a good teacher. Most of the classes are him doing problems with little to no explanation. Unless you have a solid pre-understanding of the class you will not have any idea of what he is talking about. If this class is your first contact with calculus, he is not the right teacher.
This is an incredibly difficult professor to learn from. Calculus is a stressful topic on its own. However, it does not help that he is not fluent in English. His explanations are often confusing, and he jumps from one point to another haphazardly. The homework and tests do not match his teachings well. Most students are currently failing.
His way of teaching is not the best and he goes over concepts in the course textbook that we do not even use in the exams or homework assignments. Overall, it was hard to keep track of the material he was teaching and I had to learn most of it by myself with youtube videos.
Trying to follow along with his lectures is very difficult besides having trouble understanding his English, he does not give good explanation at all to what he is doing or how he got a solution, and the reviews and hw don't reflect the test.
The professor is very isolated from his students and provides zero lectures or content created by himself. His lectures consisted only of the videos that came from the textbooks. 79% of the grade comes from exams, the rest comes from HW/quizzes. The professor did not input any grades for any assignment until the last week of the semester.
Took online over summer. Tests match homework well (most problems exactly same too...), but workload is day-to-day unbalanced. No active monitoring during tests (taken on Cengage webassign like homeworks). Using online resources such as Brainly, StudySmarter, and answers in textbook helped with homework. If you have Chegg class will be easy.
Dr. Tian does not teach at all, you teach yourself. I took this course online, and this class was a pain to go through. The textbook has more useless information than most recipes on blogs, and the videos aren't even his own. I'm lucky the course itself wasn't that challenging, because I don't think that his efforts should be considered "teaching."
Dr Tian is without a doubt the worst professor I've ever seen. He didn't teach any lessons or help. He only gave me a useless textbook and Pearsons. Class consisted of long weekends with homework, tests, and no free time. Dr Tian is not the teacher, trial by error is. I wouldn't wish this teacher on my worst enemy, coincidentally also Dr Tian. 0/5
I'm a high school senior who had Dr.Tian for Calc 3 Dual Credit. All material was learnt from the textbook and this professor added nothing to the course's functionality. He, without any announcement, posted large busy work homeworks that weren't on the syllabus. There was plenty of homework and tests were extremely tough to complete on time.
Attending his class feels like a literal HELL. When you arrive, the board is already full of examples and formulas from Chapter 3, Lesson 9. It's as though he assumes you're already familiar with the initial lessons of the chapter, despite just starting. The exam is open-ended, on paper, in-person, and proctored, and you cannot use your notes.
Tough class but Prof Tian's lectures were really helpful. He moves fast so they were sometimes hard to follow, but he was happy to explain after class or by email. Lots of hw on MyLab but Prof Tian is understanding if you ask for extensions (w good reasons ofc). Exam reviews really helped & he'd go over the questions after the exam.
I took summer diff eq 2024. It was a living nightmare. You will be assigned 20 assignments per week, more or less. The assignments will range from 20 to 50 questions. One assignment, I spent 7 hours completing. The tests are 50% of your grade. Professor does not speak English well, does not help at all, and does not answer any questions.
awful awful awful professor, in a 1 month summer class he gave us around 120-150 homework questions and 50-70 quizzes questions and 4 test each one extremely hard with 20-25 questions on each one.
Agree with pre reviews about this math class. The homework load is excessive and the practice problems are much easier than the test questions. The professor seems to take pride in making the subject harder, turning a straightforward topic into a nightmare. My grade suffered, and the intense stress negatively affected my mental and physical health.
STOP! Do not take a course with this professor. You will not pass his class.
I would not recommend this professor in any class. The Dean of Mathematics at Richland should know that Dr. Tian was the lowest-rated professor in the Math department with 136 total ratings. Wow. I am embarrassed to have been "taught" by someone who allows such a low bar of excellence for themselves and their academic pupils. Do better.
Professor is actually passionate about the subject and kind. However, his heavy accent is a takeaway for a ESOL student like me. One of the major exam questions are very not correct to the practices and homework.
This class was a real challenge, with a heavy workload and tests that didn't align well with the assignments. Thankfully, using resources like unstuck ai, ChatGPT, and the textbook helped me get through it. Not the best professor, but doable with dedication.
Much better than I expected going off the reviews. He has a PHD in differential equations so logically he's very passionate about the subject. The course is hard so you'll have to put plenty of effort, but passing or getting an A is possible.

Took him online. My main issue is that his responses to emails are terrible. He doesn't answer the questions you ask him very well. Maybe its a language barrier - I dont know, but his responses are bad. He also isn't lenient about health issues unless you have a doctors note. I've had other professors like that, but some that weren't too.
Do NOT take this professor. He gives an average of 60+ questions for homework each week. When you walk in the whole board is going to be covered in math equations and graphs. He expects you to know everything. Even if you're a bit underprepared for the test, he'll give a 0. I even went to the free tutoring. Didn't really help at all.
He toots his horn too much about being the first PhD to teach here; love for CiCi's pizza, and vague sports ref. Hit the ground running with this guy. If ADHD, lucky for you. If not, watch Prof Leonard vids plus tutoring at the Learning Commons. ENG not his first language = a poor delivery. Test q's do come from HW. Fresh out PreCal prob good to go
100+ questions a week just for the concepts to not be on the test
I don't have the words to describe how awful this class is. There are not enough hours in the week to complete the amount of work this professor gives. THERE IS NO REASON That I should have to do a thousand question review on top of multiple near 50 question homework assignments in one week.
Mr tian clearly doesn't have a very good understanding of English as he gives unrelated responses to my emails, this is also WAY to much work, up to 20 hours of home work a week, I usually love math but I hate this course, don't recommend.
If you take him, ask a lot about how he's grading things. We used Pearson and at end of the year it showed my grade as passing, only for the final grade through the college to be ten points lower. My classmates grades were different as well. He uses different weights and its confusing, my teacher at the high school level doesn't understand either.
