Calculus is supposed to be hard, right? Not necessarily with Jimmy since he's such an awesome teacher. This is no breeze through class though so be prepared to study for quizzes and tests. Homework won't count for much but it does count. Extra credit is offered but don't depend on it. Be sure to use the review sheets and office hours. Good luck!

Very friendly teacher, explains extremely well, and is easy to start a discussion on the subject he teaches on. Hard to fall asleep in his class. Very easy to pass his class if you make an effort on tests and quizzes. Only strict about cell phones, (silence them or he dismisses you!)

Great teacher. Makes it easy to understand, he's fun, gives lot of extra credit, provides exam reviews incl. final via his website. But, don't let your cell ring in class, he will tell you to leave regardless if you're taking a quiz/exam but great teacher!

This is the first professor to ever made me really understand calculus. Before, I would fail and drop Calculus, but this is the first that I stuck to. He is really helpful, enough extra credit, and very nice. He tries to make it easy to understand as possible.

Someone e-mailed to me how easy it was to get an A or B in his class...I thought it was not too hard or too easy. As long as you get the concepts and listen to his lectures, it will be easy to get a good grade..Just study and ask tons of questions..He is Hella Helpful. Hope that helps..Taking him next semester for 151. Yay!! Glad I waited. :-D

jimmy is the one of the best professors i have ever taken. i am not too excited about math, but he explains everything to the smallest detail. like all other math classes you need to study for the test. he is extremely helpful and will go to great distances to make sure that you understand the material.

I finally get math!!! Mr. Tamayo is the best math teacher I've ever had!! The way he teaches makes math a lot easier to understand. Math is a hard subject and there's no way you can pass a math class without going to class, studying, or doing the work. Mr. Tamayo just makes it easier to pass by providing the right tools. Tamayo ROCKS!

If you want a class with tons of homework to make up for the lack of control of the classroom, take this guy. There was so much chatter in class it was impossible to hear the lecture. He said he can't do anything about it. Other professors can. If you want to do a ton of useless repititious work go for it. As a professor, he's a babysitter.

He is a great professor (one of the best) unfortunately I had to drop the class because of work but I have never been able to understand math like I did in his class, I hope to take him again soon. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I am taking his class now, he is a easy teacher, but for Math 180, you have to be familiar with it, those derivatives, the intergals, and the logs are the hard one. But for me, I can handle Math180. Overall, Jimmy always gives out 2 points of extra credit on every quiz, and the exam will become easy if you know how to do the derivative,intergal.

Mr Tamayo is such a good teacher, he became a math teacher for the right reasons. He is very helpful, even if his office is full he will answer any question you got.He talks a lot about his dog skip. He is funny and out going. Homework is not due till exam or quiz. If you like to learn then this teacher is highly recommended. Vote for Jimmy! LOL

His style of teaching is outstanding. There are math students who just are not math friendly. Well being one of those students(like me), Mr. Tamayo makes math seem like yor favorite subject. I highly recommend taking his class.

Jim is an awsome teacher. He explains things very clearly and well on the board. He takes time to answer questions from students and gives out review sheets which he does tests to. i had him for both math 51 and 71 in the fall. he's patient with his students and wants them to have a good outcome for the class. i found his notes to be very clear. he connects with his students which is really cool. i will take him for 130. i glad i had him as a teacher.

this is the only professor who make hw only scale 7%, so i means if u do good enough on the test, u don't have tt do hw. and the tests are easy and also have bonus points!

Very NICE professor. He is dedicated to helping students and constantly offers his help. However, I felt he moved a little fast through his explanations, and I had a hard time following because of that. Overall, I think he is one of the better professors out there.

I had Jimmy for 130 and it was great. I had him for two semesters in a row. Fall and Spring. Great teacher to all students. Helps out students if you need help, but you need to ask him. Very understandable and wants all students to do well in his class. I highly recommend him to all students. :)

CAUTION: if you're a math major without any self discipline--dont take this class. However, if this's yr last math class, go ahead. The reason is, it is so easy that you wont study. Not open book, but tests are as easy as the first ten back of chapter problems

I use to want to be an English teacher ever since i was in middle school. My first professor in college was Jimmy and his class completely changed my views in math. This was a class that a withdrew from on several occasions. I was worried at how I'd do but Jimmy actually made math enjoyable and seem really easy. My homework didn't even seem like homework I enjoyed it so much. He is really fair and doesn't allow for distractions or anyone's learning environment to be disrupted i.e.- use of cell phones etc.

Great professor. No tricks on exams. Very straightforward. He has a passion for helping students like I have never seen in a professor before. A few quizzes, 3 exams, and one final. Just do your homework and show up to class and you will do fine. Calculus is not easy, so make sure you spend time practicing HW problems for tests.

Obviously the best math professor at Mt. sac! Ask anyone and everyone will agree. His classes are always the first to fill. His lectures are very clear and easy to understand. True master professor. Math's never really my cup of tea. Had Tamayo for 50 and passed with an A. Caters well to all learning styles, explains to clarity by answering the "why's" of math. If you do the exam reviews (issues out 3 or 4) each of them counts as 10 extra credit points. In a nutshell, he's good, and he knows it. He is the biznezz!

Clear teaching which keeps me interested. Keeps the interest by explaining the "whys" of mathematics. Midterm and final exam are cumulative. Homework is from book, no math lab. Turn off cell phone or you will be kicked out of class. This should be required for all classes. Definitely going to try and take him for 71.

I usually get horrible grades in math, and he made class very worth going. Very easy to understand. I wish his class didn't fill up so quick so I can take his class again.

All I can say is if you're in need of a refresher course before Math 51 you must take Jimmy. I wish I could take him through to MATH 110. I love Jimmy because he tell you "why" math works --- the lanuage of math was/is not eash but Jimmy make it interesting. I never missed a class and would recommend him to ALL!!!!

Jimmy is the best prof I've ever had. Taken his class from 50-130 and he is always there to help. I'm terrible at math always failed & almost didn't graduate h.s. bc of it but in his class it was the 1st time I ever had an A in a math class. The hw, reviews, and quizzes all help you for the exams. He goes over the info as many times as you need.

Hard! You have to go to class everyday and go thru 4 lessons a day. The HW is easy but the test are really hard! Not multiple choice test. I dropped the class. I recommend to take the class in 2

The best teacher anyone can have, especially if math is not their strength. I got the highest A's in math 71 and 130. Still looking forward to continue taking more classes with him. Attendance is important to him, and if you have no absences (excluding excused) then he gives you extra points at the end of the semester. Strict on cell phones and alarms and such. His tests and quizes werent very hard and i Aced almost every one of them but I got a B(89.6% off by 3 points) because I didnt do so well on my final and he wouldnt give me an A which I thought was a little messed up. Tamayo is a wonderful teacher. Took Trig during the summer & got a B, which is awesome b/c I suck at math. He's very helpful & clear. Make the flash cards as soon as possible. Strict cellphone policy. He tells you first day that if it rings, you're asked to leave for the day, so you have no excuse to let it happen. Really recommend him!

I had Tamayo for Math 150 during this past winter, for my first college class no less. He is such a great teacher. He isn't a skipper of steps. If you have questions ask. And is really approachable and makes his class fun. His class is pretty straight forward; what's on the test was on the homework and quizzes. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM!!!

Professor Tamayo genuinely cares about the success of his students. I recommend him if you're skeptical about liking math. He grades fair, his math lessons are fun, and he makes sure you understand the course. Homework is reasonable and the tests are fair. He leaves plenty of time for you to visit him during office hours.

This is Calculus II, no one should expect this class to be easy. That being said, he makes it very easy to succeed in his class. As you can see by all of his other comments, he is a fantastic teacher that is clear and loves what he does. If you need a lot of attention, he will talk to you before, after class, office hours.. AWESOME Professor!!

I took his 285 and think he's probably the best Calculus professor in the campus. He will try to make every hard concepts as easy as possible. HW is from the book and not mandatory but it helps a lot,cuz tests questions are just like HW questions level;no hard algebra,no crazy trigs, if know the concepts and know how to do the problem, easy A.

Tamayo is top notch! He really cares about his students and will make sure they understand everything clearly. He teaches harder courses such as 280 and 285 at night so he can give an hour extra to finish test/final as well as a lot of time to finish quizzes. I can't think of anything negative to say about him.

I think he is an excellent professor. I took him in the spring of 2013 and found not only that I enjoyed his class, but I was disappointed when class was canceled. Image that! Awesome professor! He truly breaks down the material to make it clear and concise. Math is my weakest subject, but I was able to get an A at the end of the semester. As long as you attend class, do the hw, and his study guides, his test/quizzes will be a breeze.

MUST TAKE. Awesome professor. Loves math, loves teaching, very helpful and reasonable; always demonstrates the concepts and emphasizes on how related to physics. Quizzes reflect lecture and homework. He doesn't replace your lowest score with your final, but his exams are very straight forward; you shouldn't have any issues if you do the homework.

I have taken near 100 units at the CC level, and Tamayo is perhaps the best professor I have ever had. From the clarity and consistency of his grading, to his helpfulness and teaching style, he is above any other professor I have thus far encountered. If you can't take Tamayo's class, you're better off not taking math at all.

EXTRA CREDIT - 20 pts max. ... very helpful. shows steps to problems. knows material so well. rule: NO phones in class. He lectures based on homework what he is going to give. Human Calculator. He gives reasons & explains to why we do it. Overall, good funny and answers all the questions you may ask him. There's no such thing as a dumb question. Tip: if math is hard for you, take a look in the book of the chapter before class, he puts everything in perspective.

Explains and breaks down problems in a way where everyone can understand. This is still a math class, so don't expect to sail pass this class. Do your part as a student and everything should be fine.

When I took Prof. Tamayo I was preparing to hate the class and I was just trying to pass so I can receive my AA, but after taking his class he helped me understand why I used to LOVE math so much. Professor Tamayo is a great professor! I would take him again in a heartbeat. FYI Unless math is your thing, do not take 71 during an intersession unless you want to spend a couple 2-3 hours a day doing homework and studying for the exams. He does provide sample questions for all of the exams, but you have to know the material regardless...

By far one of the best professors I've had at this school. He was extremely patient and ALWAYS willing to help, even if you're not in his class. I wish more professors were like him. Also, he has a great sense of humor, is not boring and very professional. The phone policy is to ensure his students aren't distracted and ready to learn.

Over the years I never had a more approachable and understanding math teacher. Professor Tamayo gave a great deal of advice and help clear hard conscepts up. I went from barely getting by in Math to loving it and mastering study technices. I took him in the winter And he still took care of everyone that asked for help. I'll take him again.

I got 97% before the final, i only need a C on the final to get an A in this class, but i couldnt make it. I spent too much time for another class which i thought i would get a B but then I got an A. learned two things, frank tran worksheets r useful, and no mater how good you have done for the class, final is still very important. So sad I got a B

He's an excellent teacher. He'll take the time to explain something and make sure you understand it. He does not tolerate the use of phones in his class (if your phone rings, you are out), but he says it every day before starting his lectures, so if that happens, it's your fault. Wow this professor was by far one of my favorite professors. I love math and he made it so easy. His lectures are sometimes overwhelming but very much worth it. Do the homework and you'll do great. Fail to do so and it'll reflect on your grade trust me. Many students had trouble but nobody dropped his class at all. He is amazing at what he does.

Mr. Tamayo is a really good teacher and very approachable. He is always open to questions and tries his best to make you understand. He is through at explaining concepts in manageable chunks. Would show us what would be important in later math classes and told us key things to remember. I would definitely take him again in the near future.

After taking other professors class makes me aware that Jimmy is a really good professor. He explains every concept in details which makes you really understand the concept. He doesnt cover lot of materials, but I still remember everything that he taught me in 280.

I took Tamayo for 280, 260, 290. I really recommend this professor because of the way he teaches. His lecture can get a bit boring but teaches topics clearly. He is always open for questions, even for ones that you may think is stupid to ask. Decent amount of homework but he gives you a week to do them. Gives one or two take home quizes and ex-cred

Please take this professor for any class you need. I took him over winter and he was very understanding when we asked for extensions on HW or questions on quizzes/tests. If you want to learn calculus and learn it stress free, take this man. My grade was never in jeopardy because of him.

Professor Tamayo is a great learning instructor. He knows what he teaches and knows how to talk to students. He gives extra credit, lots of homework. The homework just talk to him so he can give you extensions. based on what he teaches in on the quiz and exam. on the exam we used zoom instead of proctorio.

Honestly I had a great experience with this professor. He is willing to provide every possible way to help you succeed in his class. My only gripe is that I took him for a winter semester class hence why everything felt rushed but I'm 100% sure during regular semester his lectures are phenomenal. Professor Tamayo really is an amazing educator, and I can't really say that about all professors. You can tell he deeply knows the material, and cares that everyone understands. He's never condescending and will not belittle you for any question you have. He sometimes gives perks like take home quiz, but don't expect it.

One of the greatest math professors, gives very clear lectures which is applied on quiz and homework. Reply from him is kind of slow but he is polite when replying. No pressure on students and help students with his best effort. Sadly he doesn't teach 285.

If you get the opportunity… TAKE TAMAYO. The Mount SAC computer science department isn’t a god squad of professors by any means, but tamayo is a diamond in the rough. I’ve taken him for csci 220, 230, and math 280, and I can’t say enough about him.

I am jealous of those that get the privilege to take Tamayo. Treasure your time with this man, he is a gift from God himself. There is almost no chance I would have gotten through 280 without him. I feel like I would have enjoyed and done better in this class more in a regular semester. But I don't regent taking 280 with Tamayo. I liked how he provided his past test material and he lets you use a page of notes for exams. Also he definitely toned down on phones. He doesn't really care anymore. But still make sure to keep it on silent anyway.

Im gonna cry leaving this class. Best educator in my life, he is too caring to be a STEM prof. His past exams reflect the exams he gives you. 1% extra credit for showing up and 2% extra for the homework that we did not have time to cover. I loved Professor Tamayo. He's so caring and wants everyone to succeed but make sure you put in the work. His exams are similar to past exams but you won't know how to do them if you're not fast with integrals. Good luck! I can't wait to take his class in the future if he teaches 290.

There isn't really anything I can add that hasn't already been said. Tamayo is rightfully considered one of the best professors on campus. He is extremally good at explaining things and will work with students. He is also very knowledgeable on mathematics. If you ask him any theoretical question, he will have the answer to it.

An amazing teacher. Very caring and ready to answer any questions you have about the subject. I had many questions but he created extra tutoring hours and was always so kind and explained well. Lectures were very good and he explained everything thoroughly. Labs could be difficult at times but he would always reassure us and tell us not to worry.

Great professor, his lectures are very thorough and easy to follow. He gives out extra credit with labs and he allows late work. There's not a lot of homework and he gives us plenty of time to work on our labs, just make sure to keep up with the work.
