Reading the book is pointless. Come to every class, take good notes, memorize your notes and you're good. Gives bonus points for attendance and extra credit on exams, all exams multiple choice...a little tricky but not bad.
Choi has a funny personality and i enjoy his lectures, however, make sure u know your material. I thought I studied pretty hard for the exams but the layout of the questions will make you second guess your answers (only a&c, only b&d, all of the above..)
there are three exams which are very hard. gives extra credit on tests, but thats hard too. dont take him.
Multiple choice exams are difficult and tricky. The class takes a high level of committment. Not a blowoff.
He's very cool and nice guy. He explain things very well and all the tests are from his notes. He also gives extra points based on the attendence. If I need to take the class again I would definitly take it with him.His class is very alive.
Sure, his tests are tricky, but they are multiple choice - so that is the point (not just to regurgitate what you read); and, he is very helpful.
Fun, smart, personable, knowledgeable. Course graded on two 50 point exams, so prepare hard for them. Multiple choice questions can be real tricky but the essays are typically easy. Learned a lot and would recommened him but keep up with the reading and work.
Definately have to keep up with both lectures and reading, covers a lot of material. Even if he doesn't get to it during class, it will definately be on the test.
This is a "know-no" professor; sure he knows his stuff, but taking his class is a "no-no." He seems to be very specific, then when you take the exam you see bits of truth in all options. Tests are super tricky. Textbook-$125, Class-$1500, Different professor-PRICELESS! You watch MTV...NEXT!!!
I took his class over the summer and he was a nice guy who had tricky tests which were 50% of your grade but if you do better on the final he'll take that more into consideration. He's a funny guy who knows his stuff and actually cares about you.
Tests are tricky. Do not just study the lecture notes. You'll need to go over all possible scenarios that a given topic could end up being. Requires some math computations, He's nice, and knows his stuff.
this was the easiest class. just take good notes in class and study from the notes that he posts on blackboard...easy A and he really cares about his students! adorable professor
Great prof. I finally understand statistics.
Probably one of the worst instructors I've had during my entire academic career (undergrad and grad)
EXCELLENT Teacher! CARING Teacher! Funny! HARD matetial makes people rate him bad. Although there are TRICKY tests. He hates when people say his tests are tricky but they are! Just go to class everyday take good notes, Study only lecture notes and your written ones. no prob
The HW was extremely time consuming but manageable, but the final exam was by far the hardest exam I've ever had, and he gives very little direction other than "learn everything in the book." Doesn't give extra credit & doesn't grade on a curve. Avoid this class and the professor altogether. If You must take it do not take this on-line!
My section was distance-learning the first half, then in-class the second half. This is pretty much a math class, and Choi put forth a lot of effort to help the students. He's also a fair grader. The class has a lot of homework though and is pretty time-consuming. The work is moderately difficult but that depends on your background.
Good professor, cares about what you think. He is well-organized and lets you know what to expect before the course begins. 3 Exams only, pay attention in class, review notes and asks questions then you should be fine.
I took this class online, so studying was at my own pace. The video lectures were helpful, but sometimes hard to understand. Dr. Choi uses a lot of Power Points to supplement the textbook. Homework is difficult, but manageable. Final was extremely difficult.
My class was distance-learning the first half, in-class the second half (he was out of the country). It's pretty much a math class, with the difficulty level dependent on your background. He's surprisingly laid-back and makes a real attempt to help you. He's a fair grader as well.
Prof. Choi is funny and light hearted. His humor helps to alleviate the tension in class.
Dr. Choi was great. I took this as a distance learning class but he stil was around whenever I needed help. His expectations are very clear and his syllabus and homework is fair. The difficulty of the class all depends on what kind of a math background you have. The final exam was somewhat difficult. As others have said, he grades fairly.
Midterm and final plus opportunity for lots of points through homework. The book is confusing and not helpful. Professor is a good guy and at times when he walks through concepts and reviews what you've already learned he is helpful. But, he provides slides/notes for each chapter and sometimes just goes through them and doesn't teach concepts.
He's funny and knows the subject. Some people were frustrated with his communication skills. But, if they would have just asked questions, they would have gotten answers.
Let's be clear: there is is no good teacher of this course. There is only sucks & OMFG sucks. Choi wrote the book, which is useless & full of arcane math problems that do not advance understanding. He has a tendency to ask subjective questions on his homework. If DePaul wants to make this a mandatory couse, they could invest in actual TEACHERS!!!!!
Expect a lot of humor (or attempts), tangential discussion, and very difficult final. Quizzes and homeworks were tough, but easy to do well because they are take home and you can collaborate with classmates. The final was very difficult and he grades on a straight scale, which can really hurt.
I took the online version of this course and found it challenging, but worthwhile. As long as you finish the homework you should be fine. The midterm and final are take home and you get three days to complete them. They were both pretty hard, but he curved when necessary. Overall I enjoyed this professor.
Go to class and do the homework and you'll be OK. The topic (stats) isn't too relevant for most people in the class, but good knowledge to have. I think most people dislike the subject not prof. Choi.
confusing style of teaching. the best thing to do is study his notes that he puts up on line. textbook is useless.
Prof Choi is a good teacher. He wrote the book for this course, and it literally takes you step by step (as the title infers) through the concepts. Those who say he is not good either didn't put forth enough effort, or just didn't understand the material. I recommend Choi.
great professor, his humor makes the lectures lively. 2 midterms. 1st was very easy - memorization. 2nd was the most difficult - mainly equations. the final is similar to the 1st midterm just memorizing history of the bank.no homework. I never used the book, tests are based off lecture notes and his lecture,go to class, he adds points to your tests
Dr. Choi does a good job of keeping it simple. The most useful materials were the in class discussion problems, the workbook and Power Points provided on Blackboard. Basic equations and problem solving logic should be memorized for exams. More examples of real life applied business statistics would add value to the course.
Amazing professor. Very helpful and knows exactly how to teach stuff. Awesome guy, genius teacher. Uses the board very well. Based just on 3 exams which have lots of easy EC opportunities.
funny but moves too quickly
Gsb420 is a hard class but Choi makes it very easy, if you want to breeze through this class you must take it from Choi, you won't regret it, he is very generous with grading too.
Good professor. Is interested in feedback on bettering the class. Tough material, but he teaches in a straightforward manner. Textbook follows in class lectures. Suggest studying with a group if possible. mid term was ok, final was hard.
This guy is a PROFESSOR. He prepares lectures, knows his stuff, and has worked in his field. Awesome guy--we need more like him.
Choi makes this class as bearable as possible. It's a tough class based on your most recent experience in Math & Stats. The mid-term and finals weren't easy but doable if you prepare. Working in a group is beneficial!
Great class! Normally a hard class but Prof. Choi makes it easy and doable. If you have a good math background, this class is a breeze. Midterm is pretty straight forward. Choi welcomes comments and suggestions to improve his class. I highly recommend this professor.
He will go the whole time when it comes to class time and lecture. However, he goes thru how to solve each problem. This class does take time to do the hw. But if you can do the hw, and understand it, you will be fine on the midterm and final.
Professor Choi should have WAY more chili peppers!!
His tests are all multiple choice but are VERY TRICKY, all the possible answers are close. He prepares lecture notes but they are unclear, and often you must memorize exact words. Focuses on little details and not the main concepts. Preparing for his exams doesn't help at all- horrible class, and all his sarcastic jokes make the topics less clear
His class is easy, don't bother buying the book! He makes lots of jokes, so if you're listening he is a funny guy. I have not bought the book and gone strictly off my notes and I have gotten A's on all the exams. Make sure you go to class and take notes
Words to describe Dr. Choi: intelligent, fun, hilarious! He told our class he needed a pepper on ratemyprofessor to show his wife...so there you go Dr. Choi! Do not bother buying the book. His fantastic notes are all you need. Even he will tell you not to buy the book! Attendance is extra credit points so take advantage. You MUST study!
Dr. Choi is AMAZING!! I have never had a teacher who has cared more about his students and their success. This is not a blow off class, you must study. But his notes are all you need. Study those and you will get an A. GUARUNTEED!!
Dr. Choi is great. Don't try to pull anyting funny with this guy because his is firm on his policy. He gives out extra credit and honestly wants to see his students succeed. He teaches the concepts as well as they can be taught, given they are difficult topics. Don't buy the book. Take this class!!
Very nice person who tries his best to have students get the lesson. Very responsive to questions. The tests are somewhat hard and requires heavy studying but he grades fairly which is good. The killer is the book he authored which is not that good and has too many holes for improvement.
Great Professor! Extra credit for attendance (up to 6 per test) plus up to three extra questions on the tests (each worth 2points). Class average on the second test was 80 so I don't know why people complain so much. I studied his notes only and received 103 on the last exam. He wants you to do well!!! take him!!!
Great Prof- wants you to do well and goes out of his way to offer help. His test are very very tricky though. The material comes more easily for accounting/finance majors than it does for marketing. Gives EC for attendance which is a great incentive for coming to class!
This guy is a great professor I highly recommend taking him for he is very helpful and quite funny. TAKE HIM if u hate econ TAKE HIM if u love econ!!!!!
He's just like every other Econ teacher at DePaul, and uses solely a PowerPoint. Oh, but he'll lie to you about the attendance policy. FYI, it's mandatory. And he has no email etiquette.
Overall good prof., clear explanation in class, eager to answer questions. There is homework due every week, but it's fairly easy if you pay attention in class. His jokes are a bit goofy, but it helps make the dry material more bearable :-)
He teaches so clearly that you will understand the concepts very well. His exams are little tricky, but if you do all the homework and read the text book, you can easily get A. I highly recommend him.
If you want to be treated like a child take him. Don't listen to what he says in class about attendance. Show up to each class, study on your own. If you want to bump your grade, threaten a grade challenge and it will happen. Don't ask for what you earned, or he'll claim that it was a "mistake" even if he did it to more than 1 student.
This prof clearly states what he expects of his students. If you meet those expectations you will survive. The lecture is excellent, the video is a great back-up resource and he has some of the best problems to solve.
Nice guy
Loved him, tests were super easy and he asks for feedback after you get them back, come to class and you get extra credit on the exams, pretty much impossible to fail his class.
Choi is a baller. Extra credit questions on the test and your attendance is extra credit as well. 3 exams, no midterm, no final, but weekly "pop" quizzes, in which he warns you when they will be and when they are. You don't need the book and this is an easy class.
Choi is the professor to take for this class, I was hesitant to take an online class, but it this class was a good one to take online. Not only is Choi extremely responsive through email, but he wants you to "get it," and will explain things in such a manner where it is almost fun and easy. Work in a group on hmwks and ull be set!
What I really like about this professor is that he relates everything to the present. No txtbook required. All his test/quizzes are based exactly from his lectures
Awesome professors! Weekly quizzes, 3 tests. No textbook necessary. Come to class so you can earn extra credit. He has outline for each chapter so you can take notes during class. Tests are no surprises. A great man to get advice from!
Annoying professor. He has such a big ego. Talks for hours about grades, tests, impossible to locate him outside of class. Wish I'd taken it with someone else.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!! Do not take this man for GSP 420. He cheated students out of grades and failed many students in my class, making then re-take it. Not helpful and pretty offensive. STAY AWAY FROM JIN CHOI
Tells you what is on the tests if you pay attention. The way he words tests are a little tricky, but if you study you will get a good grade. 3 test and quizzes every week. Gives extra credit if you go to class every week.
I found professor Choi to be a great instructor! yes, at times the way he words the questions are hard to interpret, but he does a great job with the material (which is not an exciting topic). I took the online version of the class, HW due online every week, midterm and a final. the class is easy if you keep up w/the material. Highly recommend him
This is more language class than an ECON class. Jin Choi does not speak english well which made a hard class impossible. Tough grader and doesnt connect well with students.I took an online class and our class avg was a 74%, no curve. Dont ruin your GPA, Take with someone else!!
This guy wrote the textbook and never had it proofread. Hard textbook to use, very inconsistant. I don't recommend him
The textbook and the professor's words are very inconsistant (and he wrote the textbook). Tough class for students who follow the rules of mathematics. our class avg. was a 70% no curve.
Highly Recommend! I am in the online section which consists of weekly online homework from his book (30%), Midterm (35%), and Final (35%). Both exams are take-home and you have three days to complete them. He has videos to explain each chapter on D2L. He is really helpful if you have any questions, give you everything you need to succeed in class
Prof Choi is one of the best teachers I've had at DePaul. He is very clear when he explains things, and he lets you know what will be on the exams. The questioning on the exam can make you second-guess yourself, but if you study, you'll do well. He ties what he teaches into everyday life, and the class was extremely helpful. Take him!
Not an easy class, but the prof is very helpful and explains the material well. I read some of the comments and wanted to add that there is nothing wrong with his English - I understood everything just fine. He tries to help students as much as he can and jokes a lot to lighten up the mood. I would take a class with him again.
I thought Professor Choi was extremely reasonable and helpful for the numerous topics we covered in the class. It's a class for students who aren't familiar with basic calculus and statistics and while we moved at a very fast pace, we covered a lot of material.
Wouldn't recommend, tough grader and he moves through material so ridiculously fast. Tough quizzes without notice and the class average was a 72%. I would take someone else for, what should be, an easy business core class.
This class is definitely the weed-out for the MBA program. Horror stories abound. Take Choi's online class and join a study group. You'll actually understand the concepts and be able to use them. This isn'y an easy course by any stretch, but he's the best professor to take.
The material itself isn't easy, but he does a great job preparing you for his exams and lets you know when you expect a quiz. He provides an outline of what he'll cover in class and does a great job in explaining tough topics. Attendance is mandatory. I went to all classes, studied for the 3 exams, and reviewed notes before quizzes and got an A.
Intense course that you will have to work hard to do well in. Listen to his advice on how to do well: 1. Read the book & do the examples. 2. Listen to the lecture and solve the examples presented in it. 3. Do the homework. He cares and wants you to learn.
Dr Choi is a good professor and a good person who helps his students. This course requires a lot of work and dedication, but if you work hard an A is very attainable. A lot of effort will be required if you do not have a strong background in calculus, statistics and high level math skills. All in all a tough, but fair class
Moves very quickly through things. You need to stay caught up each week to do well. Definitely will show you any areas of stats that you might be rusty in.
Professor Choi is THE BEST professor I have ever taken. He is very clear and makes the class easy to follow. Takes his time to go through each chapter making sure that the class understands the material. There is alot of extra credit on for every quiz, midterm and final. He even gives extra credit for attendance! Very smart with great credentials!
Professor Choi is a really good professor. He's funny and even though the lectures are long he helps get you through it. His quizzes can be tough but the tests aren't too bad. I'd take him again!
Professor Choi is there for his students. Go to class, pay attention, study a bit on the side and you will do fine. He genuinely wants to prepare his students for the business world. He forces you to stay on top of the material by giving you ten question quizzes every week. Doing well on the quizzes will allow you to do well on the three tests.
Prof Choi is awesome! His lectures were clear & he tries to keep it fun. Attendance counts as extra credit toward your exam grades. The weekly quizzes were pretty easy to get 100s on when you study your notes & the outlines he has online. He also posts practice questions for each chapter that help with studying for the tests & quizzes.
Jin Choi doesn't have the skills necessary to be an effective teacher. While he is knowledgeable about Statistics, that knowledge is not easily transferred. He will overexplain fairly straightforward topics, but flies through actual problems with little explanation. Also, his book is a required text (conflict?) and is written like he teaches.
Don't be scared by his name, he doesn't have a bad accent! He tells you what will be on the quizzes and exams. No homework and you don't need the book. Offers lots of extra credit, and you get up to 6 points of extra credit on the exam just for having good attendance. Lots of energy, not a difficult class with this professor.
Great lecture style! Provides notes and tells you what will be on the exam. Attendance is not mandatory but it does count as extra credit towards your exams. Three exams spread out through the quarter. Very interesting class and the professor is very knowledgable and funny. Would take again and for other classes if offered!
Choi is a great professor. The class consisted of a few quizzes (which you're well aware of before hand), and 3 exams. He's clear on what's on the exam and that makes them not tough at all. I would definitely recommend taking him for 315
Good professor. I would highly recommend. As long as you study the handout notes you should be fine. I didn't buy the book.
One of the best at DePaul! He lays out everything for the student and makes the material easy to understand. If you pay attention in class & study his handouts, there is no reason you shouldn't get an A. Seriously, he tells you what to know for the quizzes and exams so if you do poorly, you shouldn't blame anyone but yourself. Really a great guy.
I would recommend taking this professor for Econ 315! He truly cares about his students. He lays out the material and hands on notes via D2l. He writes his own notes and breaks down the material because lets face it, Econ is not an easy subject to master. Study his notes, and there should be no reason you should not receive an A.
I would recommend taking this professor for Econ 315! He truly cares about his students. He writes his own notes and breaks down the material because lets face it, Econ is not an easy subject to master. Study his notes, and there should be no reason you should not receive an A.
Probably one of the funniest teachers that I have ever had. Is very informative and makes class fun. The class is not harder than it needs to be and he will help you if needed. Really great guy, I would highly recommend taking his class.
Awesome professor, one of the best at Depaul. Not only is this class easy, it is very informative as well. He also offers a lot of information useful for personal finance/living. His sense of humor and great teaching style actually had me looking forward to class. offers a lot of E.C. He is worth taking. Here's a hot pepper for prof Choi.
I took him because of all the good reviews but I guess its just if you take him in person. He was very confusing and claimed his midterm/final were like our quizzes for the chptr. Wrong. They were different. A lot of memorization.
One of the funniest instructors Ive had. Does an excellent job breaking down tough material.
His online class is super difficult if you fall behind with the material. Quizzes (Chapters 1-17) 40%, Midrerm (Chapters 1-8) (200pts) 30%, and Final (Chapters 9-13, 16-17) (200pts) 30%. Honestly, a lot of work and memorization. Practice Exams are nothing like the midterm or final. Waste of time. Take him in person, or don't take him at all!
It was a challenging class, lots of material to remember. Practice midterm and final are not very helpful. The tests are harder, questions are tricky with 5 options to pick from and I think that was unnecessary. All answer choices are very similar to each other so that makes the tests even harder.
Fast paced class. Do well in the Quizzes, its 40% of your grade. You need to study the material for this class. It is very difficult. But he will give you credit for trying. He curves the midterm and final by the highest score in class (not much of a curve if people do well). So do your best and understand the material anyway. Good luck.
I took this class my last quarter of senior year, so basically all of the material was familiar. His lectures were enjoyable and the weekly quizzes were not difficult. The practice midterm and final were basically copy and pasted as to what was on the real midterm and final. Offers extra credit and curves your grade. I recommend taking him!
A sweet professor. He wants you to do your best, don't need to buy book, just watch the lectures and study hard. Midterm and final are huge part of your grade, and while they are brutal, he does curve.
Easy quizzes (not proctored, 40%) and harder midterm/final (proctored online via Examity, 30% each). Study the quiz questions! You can work ahead which is great, you can get weeks' worth of work done in a day or two and not have to worry about this class for a long time. He curved the final grade by 5%, and there was an easy extra credit quiz.
Quizzes are open book so theyre easy. However, study really hard for midterm and final. I do not recommend studying quizzes, you should study PowerPoints and video lectures. The class is hard really hard. Good luck!
He over explains simple economics topics and equations. His first lecture he said "I've been teaching for 15 years so I know what I'm doing." It's pretty condescending to students.
Only C I ever got in college in this class. Did terrible on Mid/Final, which was online proctored via Examity, each are 30% of grade. Quizzes are easy and you can search all the answers online, so make sure you do well on the quizzes which are 40%. Tough class and honestly he does his best to make it difficult. Didn't like him and Examity is awful.
Overall this class covers A LOT of material. It is challenging and time-consuming. The lectures are very boring. Your grade is based on weekly quizzes, midterm, and final. Exams were through Examity online.
The topics in ECO315 are absolutely necessary introductory financial and economic material. What you learn is actually applicable to the financial world, unlike almost all economic theory classes I've taken at DePaul. Watch the videos every week and take the quizzes. If that's too much, it's all on Quizlet, but actually learn the stuff, it's useful
good professor, super easy quizzes
Async class with weekly quizzes and a midterm/final. Super easy class since most questions are on quizlet. But if you actually have time, learn what he teaches because the topics are super important for financial literacy and just having more knowledge about things in this subject.
He was good online async class And had easy quizzes I just wish he applied a bigger curve to the grade
Professor Choi makes it clear he wants you to succeed. I took this course online, he provided power points for each chapter, a separate word doc summarizing key points and had videos where he explained the lesson using the slides. Very understanding, I missed the midterm due to a silly mistake and he opened it up for me. Would totally recommend!
Whether you're good or not at econ or math, he makes the material easy to understand. There are weekly quizzes, a midterm, and a final. All of the quizzes/exams are based on his recorded lectures, but if you just read the outline you'll be okay. He provides resources if you're interested in learning more and made the class interesting.
Great Professor. Took the class async but he still sent our reminders and made it clear he was always available. Weekly quizzes are very doable if you just watch the lectures and take notes. Would 100% take again.
