Very hard to understand. No help to students. Messes up a lot. Brushes over many things and doesn't explain hard concepts well. Worst professor I have ever had at Indiana University. I recommend finding other options.
JIn is Very hard to understand and doe snot explain well. I go to every office hour available, but I leave still confused every time. The explanations are not helpful, and you are better off skipping lecture ad learning form the book. Constant mistakes during class are corrected by students. Super nice guy, but bad teacher.
This is the worst teacher ive ever had. It is almost impossible to understand him. He frequently doesnt even understand his own work and gets confused. The students are the ones to clarify the problems to him. I am so confused every time i leave his class. this class has brought me so much stress mostly because of the professor i have.
Not a very good teacher. Super smart just doesn't teach the subject very well.
Jin seems like a nice guy who understands calc well, but he simply can't teach. He is nearly impossible to understand due to his thick accent and because he mumbles while lecturing. I've had to get a tutor due to this and I'm typically a decent math student. All in all, avoid this guy at all costs.
Hardest Math class ive taken just because of the professor. You can't understand him and he does a TERRIBLE job explaining things. Students constantly correct him off his mistakes.
your grade is based on only 4 total exams, which likely come down to a total of under 100 problems. no makeup chances. this would be somewhat acceptable if the guy could teach, but he just copies the textbook onto the board. he knows the material, but can't teach
Jin is a sweet man, but he's not a good teacher. I don't normally get bad grades, but i did in his class. I went to 99% of the classes with a few exceptions and I still didn't understand the material. I got a tutor outside of class to help and when he would bring up specific material we should've learned, it was no where to be found in my notes.
Jin Hyung To is, without contest, the worst teacher I have ever had in my nearly 2 decades of school life. When I go to his lectures, I am better off staring at the wall than actually listening to him speak, since there is nothing of substance to gather. I do all my studying on my own, and he does not give any makeup opportunities. He is the worst.
Legitimately awful, Im not sure how this man was hired by the university. Hes impossible to understand, constantly messes up his own work and pretty much just repeats the textbook in a way thats harder to make sense of. I gave up going to his class after the first exam and my grade has improved drastically. Youre better off not going to lecture
He is impossible to understand during lecture and is poor at explaining concepts. Ive stopped going to lecture and use the m119 YouTube videos to teach me and those are 1000x more useful. Nice guy, but DO NOT TAKE HIM UNDER AND CIRCUMSTANCES
Jin Hyung To is simply, horrible. When I say this man has no clue what he is doing at any given time, I mean it. He is incompetent in calculus. He loses track of where he is on almost every single problem. He changes numbers and makes up random things in his head. Students have to correct him on his mistakes. I feel sad for all who must take him.
Jin simply put it is an odd ball. I'm not sure he even knows what he is doing, he means well but is not a great teacher. Very smart guy but just awful at teaching. His quizzes are easy and give extra credit so if you are unfortunate to be stuck with him do that.
Professor Jin was 100% the worst professor I have ever had. He is hard to understand, does not explain concepts well, and goes through information very quickly. He is confusing and the students are left feeling lost. Would not recommend him and cannot stress enough that he does not teach well.
You are better off taking the course online or switching professors. Calculus is a hard subject as it is, but this professor makes it even worse. After attending classes for the first few weeks, I found it more beneficial to not attend lectures and take notes from the book. I basically had to teach myself. I wish I took it online instead.
He is a kind guy, but an awful teacher. He is so bad at explaining the material and doesn't give helpful lectures. He has a heavy accent and mumbles a lot. He has high expectations with little support from him. Do not take his course!
Extremely hard to communicate with. Curved my exam downwards, and when I emailed him asking for an explanation, all I got was "raw score does not equal standard score". An A is extremely attainable in this course as long as you keep up with Webwork, but don't expect Jin to be any help in getting you there. Approach this class as self study.
hunnyyy its a waste of your time. hes a foreign teacher so i didnt rlly understand him. he just writes straight from the book to the white board and doesnt actually teach. no late work allowed. you basically have to teach yourself but even thats almost impossible. if you have to take this class the best thing to do is get a tutor. goodluck
I feel bad for Jin and wish him the best, but he should improve as a teacher. Hes hard to understand, overcomplicates many problems, makes mistakes in quizzes/exams often, offers help for students but doesnt really help, most of his exams are things we dont discuss in class and you have to basically teach yourself the material. Great person tho.
Jin is simply terrible at teaching calculus. He frequently has to be corrected by students and scribbles hieroglyphics on a projector. His voice doesn't travel well through the class so nobody knows what he is saying. His accent makes it impossible to learn. Avoid Jin at all costs. Worst experience I've had by far.
Jin is an atrocious professor. Whether it is lack of projection of his voice in class, or scribbling random symbols on the projector during lectures, he makes it impossible to learn. His exams are littered with errors and we are constantly disrupted while taking them so he can correct them. Avoid Jin's calc class at all costs.
Impossible to understand and goes way too fast in class which makes for a very difficult combo. Be prepared to attempt to teach yourself the content. He did curve the tests heavily, which was nice. I thought he was friendly, just not a very good professor.
Took calc in hs and thought I'd be fine. After the first lecture, never went back unless it was for an exam. That was until he starting making attendance mandatory! Complete waste of time. During the exams he interrupt us, making it impossible to concentrate and try to figure out the outrageous questions. One of our tests didn't have a question!!!!
I have no good things to say about Professor To. He made attendance mandatory, then in class nobody could understand what he was saying, he frequently made mistakes that had us questioning his ability to preform basic calculus, and he left us woefully underprepared for the exams.
Please avoid taking his classes at all costs
By far the worst professor I've ever had at any level of schooling. Cannot understand him during lectures, nearly the entire grade depends on 4 tests (2 departmental and 2 of his, he barely curves his own tests.) Do not take. "Some of you may need to spend more time, like more than 8 hours everyday until final to catch up" -Line of email from Jin
He is always very kind, patient, helpful and truly care about his profession and his students! I always enjoy having him as a professor and I appreciate how approachable he is. He posted all the answers for the practice exams. He taught me spending extra office hours with kindness.
Speaks very quietly and is difficult to understand
He is very kind as a person, and you need to put extra time studying this course
He was very quiet and difficult to understand. He was very kind though, he just did not explain the material very well. Majority of your grade in the class is based on exams, with only 15% being WebWork. The exams could be difficult, and there was not a huge curve on them. I had to teach myself all of the material.
I found the classes a bit tough and was completely clueless at times. But the professor is great outside class and helps a lot in his office hours and is also willing to provide extra appointments which I found it very helpful. The class he takes should be easy when focusing on office hours and extra material.
He is intelligent. He is kind. I like his care for teaching.
He took care of my math as much. His passion for the math shines through his teaching.
Math is a tough subject. I read a lot before the class, it was so helpful. He answers my question. He gave me lots of encouragement. I improved my math skill.
I worked diligently on his homework assignment. And, attend office hour. I got A+.
He was always very caring towards his students. Lots of people complain about his lectures being hard to understand, but if you sit close enough to hear him you should be fine. I learned from him very easily since he writes everything that he's doing clearly and concisely on the screen. Pay attention, go to class; He is a great professor.
This math professor is exceptional, mastering all area of math. He provides excellent student support. Very Knowlegible.
This lecture was incredibly beneficial in deepening my understanding of math. Dr. To's passion for the math shone through, making the math not only understandable but also fascinating. He has a passion for math. That is influence to me.
Your grade relies on 4 exams which have many errors on them that he corrects mid-test. You are not able to see if you got the answers correct on in-class quizzes and oftentimes if you ask for help, he is unsure of the answer on his own quiz. During lectures, he just reads off and copies notes he took prior to class and he's difficult to hear.
Writing this for M106. Having lectures over Zoom made it really hard for me to learn. Cut to the end of the semester, I'm all burnt out, and he's literally yelling at people on the Zoom call to try to get them to participate. Nobody joins the Zooms anymore. These calls are making me want to tear my hair out. I don't recommend it.
In addition to a hard math class, this professor is very hard to make sense of. He talks very quietly and even with a mic you cannot understand him. He just copies notes for his lectures and does not explain anything. The 4 tests in the class basically make up your whole great. But the tests are curved heavily. Overall I would not recommend.
The professor's support has been amazing. Always available during office hours and willing to schedule extra sessions, it's made a big difference. By focusing on office hours and extra materials, I had A. I learned a lot from his lectures. He is an outstanding mathematician.
He was kind and dedicated to helping me succeed. He is available during office hours to provide personalized assistance. By offering two attempts on exams and rounding up averages, he rewarded my hard work. I had chances to improve and saw boosts in my grades. His caring approach made a difference in learning. He was knowledgeable.
Jin's teaching is filled with warmth and expertise. His expert teaching style, honed through college and beyond, makes Calculus feel like a breeze. With clear explanations and a talent for simplifying tough concepts, every lesson with him is pure joy. Have more time with him through office hour and enjoy math.
Jin's teaching is excellent, setting a strong standard in our math class. While some of us, myself included, find it challenging due to our weak math skills, there's always room for improvement. We often support each other. Jin's teaching is a great example of math proficiency. He's truly talented and very kind. His lecture is worth to take.
Thanks to Dr. Jin Hyung To decision to let us study the exam beforehand and provide detailed solutions afterward, I've not only learned a lot but also experienced significant growth in my math skills. He is very diligent. I like his class.

Professor taught many math concept with detailed solutions. To keep good grade, I keep stay resilient and capable. I kept pushing forward with determination for chanllege math. And, I had good grade. Thank you making me push myself and learn a lot.
He offers clear notes for easy learning, guiding me with dedication. He even updates older materials smoothly. His teaching style is timeless and inspiring
He is effortlessly covering every topic, I never missed a step in my learning journey. His teaching makes math challenges with easy, and his resourceful approach boosts my math skills significantly. So, I didn't miss any class to learn broad math topic. It was keys my success.
Do not take this professor.

I am continuously improving my math skills. He generously assists us, demonstrating remarkable patience as I progress. Seeking help with math problems and communication is crucial for achieving good grades.
Consider taking this professor because he has expertise in teaching, excellent experience, and flexibility.
I recently attended an office hour session over Zoom. I learned a lot, as my professor has a wealth of knowledge beyond calculus. I learned many valuable insights. He knows exactly what I should learn. I enjoyed a lot of math concepts from him in just one semester. I admire him for his ability to teach me numerous concepts.
This professor is outstanding. He is approachable during office hours and is always willing to offer extra appointments, which I found helpful. His dedication to my success is evident in the way he provides additional materials and personalized support. By utilizing his office hours and the resources he offers, the course becomes enjoyable.
This professor is a super smart math educator. His deep knowledge and clear explanations make complex topics accessible and engaging. He is approachable, supportive, and inspires critical thinking and genuine interest in mathematics. A true role model, he exemplifies patience, enthusiasm, and dedication to me every lecture.
He is such a sweet and supportive teacher. His smart and clear way of explaining math has helped my grades improve a lot. I also appreciate how his quizzes are easy and how he explains the material beforehand, making it easier to learn. The extra credit opportunities are also very helpful. He is one of the best mathematicians I have ever met.
Jin is a kind and brilliant individual with an exceptional understanding of calculus. His intelligence is remarkable, and his knowledge spans a wide array of math subjects.
This professor provides a unique learning experience. His lectures are well-organized, as he writes thorough and comprehensive notes. The class structure is simple, with four major tests making up your grade. Fortunately, the tests are curved, giving everyone a fair chance to succeed. This course offers a valuable opportunity for growth.
Jin is quite unique. His genuine intention to help students succeed is clear. Jin is incredibly smart, and his quizzes are manageable, with opportunities for extra credit. If you have the chance to take his class, make sure to take advantage of the extra credit opportunities. His passion for teaching and dedication to our success is inspiring.
The professor was friendly and made efforts to adjust the test grading, which was much appreciated.
This professor is incredibly dedicated to student success, encouraging in-depth, independent learning and helping students reach a high level of mastery through four well-structured exams.
very nice guy, you can tell he's passionate about math and very knowledgeable. however, I found his lessons to be hard to follow and not good preparation for the tests.
He provides valuable insights, announces tests well in advance, and is diligent, professional, and genuinely caring toward his students. His deep knowledge of math is impressive, and I've learned a great deal from him. On top of that, he is incredibly kind and approachable.
Professor To is extremely hard to understand and his classes are not helpful for learning the material. The tests are pretty tricky and he curves them in an odd way. I would not take this class again and would try to avoid having him as a professor.
This class required insane amount of studying and hours of tutoring just to fail all the exams. In class lectures are completely useless because it is very hard to understand him and has a poor teaching ability. The averages for the class exams were below 50% every exam. It wasn't supposed to be advanced class but an entry level one. Horrific.
This is the worst teacher I've ever had in my whole life. Don't take this class unless you are a math whiz. Actually, don't take this class at all. I did end with a B- in this class, but it was only a man-curved test of at least 40%. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!
This class is a great opportunity to challenge yourself and grow in math. It's not easy, but I learned so much, and the professor is very knowledgeable and passionate about math.
This class was challenging but incredibly rewarding. It pushed me to grow, and the generous curve helped me succeed with a A-. Great for building resilience and advanced skills.
The class offers a great opportunity to grow academically with some extra effort. I benefit from using additional resources to support my learning. He is very knowledgeable.
I acquired essential mathematical knowledge through this course to advance in my career. It has been beneficial to me.
Outside of class, Professor is approachable and eager to assist students, delivering well-structured and easy-to-follow lectures
He's a very nice and passionate individual with an impressive depth of knowledge in math. I admire His enthusiasm of math, and Professor helped a lot with test preparation for class.
He is incredibly supportive and approachable, offering helpful office hours and extra appointments that make the course truly rewarding.
This teacher is knowledgeable, creating a supportive time that meets my needs. I've learned a lot from him through office hour, and his expertise in mathematics is truly inspiring
Math-V 119 He only speaks about 10 words throughout the entire lecture. Also I'm genuinely not trying to be rude but his English is pretty bad/broken which makes it difficult to understand what he's teaching. Everyone either dropped or stopped showing up for class and exams. The textbook isn't good either. I would get tutoring for this class.
I met him during office hours for help, and I was really impressed by his math knowledge. I learned a lot from him and am very grateful! Dr. Jin Hyung To is an amazing mathematician and teacher.
The professor is dedicated to teaching and has a strong understanding of the material. When I needed help, he provided dedicated support for my needs with kindness.
He is ready to help when I ask and teach with amazing knowledge of math.
Professor Jin To is a outstanding math professor. He explains clearly with deep knowledge, make learning enjoyable, and care about me. I learned a lot from him this semester.
The professor is great at teaching math, and kind. He explains complex concepts in a simple way, making them easy to understand.
Professor Jin To is incredibly knowledgeable and has outstanding math expertise. He explains complex topics with ease and creates a supportive environment for students to learn and grow. I learned a lot this semester. He is so kind. When I ask for help, he is always there during office hours.
I took M-106 (I don't know why there isn't an option for this), but the class is extremely confusing and hard to navigate. I had to drop because I simply could not understand neither the professor nor the recitation leader (not trying to be rude whatsoever, but they both have very broken English and heavy accents). Would not recommend
Dr. To has a deep understanding of mathematics. The lectures are making even complex topics approachable. One of the strongest aspects of the course is his mathematical writing is excellent. His writing makes a big difference in understanding. The clarity of written explanations is exceptional. I appreciated his mathematical insight.
The textbook provided did not feel like it lined up well with the notes given during lectures, and there's rarely any opportunities to get your grade up if you do poorly on an exam. Exams make up 70% of your grade, pop quizzes on content you learn day of, and BAD if you have auditory issues. Studying outside of class will take up 80% of your time.
This course was incredible inspiring. This professor's attention to detail and thorough approach helped me learn deeply. I'm grateful for the opportunity to take this class. He didn't miss any topic and covered everything, and I learned so much. With the curved grade, I'm happy with my result!
I really love math. The class had a lot of useful content, and I learned a lot. The test was curved, and I got A+. The professor explained everything clearly and covered all the important details.
Professor Dr. To is a really kind and caring teacher. He truly wants his students to do well and is always there to help. Attending class and office hours was very helpful because he explained math concepts clearly. He's patient, fair, diligent, and genuinely wants his students to succeed. I'm thankful I had him as a professor.
there are fake reviews on here, but this one is real. you can barely understand the professor. pop quizzes every week, and you're better off teaching yourself the material. even people who are good at math will struggle with this course. do NOT take this class.
This course has quizzes and assignments to keep you on track. The professor is well prepared, and regular study along with office hours will help you succeed. I believe this course follows a structured curriculum.
Thank you for his dedication. I worked hard this semester, attended every class and office hour, and tried to learn diligently just like him. I'm grateful for his teaching. I got a good grade in this class.
He is the most knowledgeable math professor I've met. I respect him a lot. I learned a lot this semester and got a good grade. Thank you!
I don't recommend taking this class with this specific teacher. First, he is difficult to understand. The reviews here are definitely fake. You are basically teaching yourself in this class. This class isn't it if you actually plan on learning. If you're not strong in math, I recommend not taking this class, as it could negatively affect your GPA.
Attendance wasn't required, but I went to class and prepared well. The professor works hard and teaches well. I learned a lot and got good grades. The grading is fair, and the class is very rewarding if you put in the effort.
