Extremely poor lecturer. Jumps all over the place, no flow, no titles, uses slides straight out of the textbook, but they are in such poor resolution that it is hard to see them after 3 rows back. Hard exams, hard quizzes, TA's selected very poorly!
Nice guy, but very boring lectures. The quizzes are taken from the homework, but somehow people still do bad. His handwriting is illegible at times.
He is out to get his students. Test are impossible, class average is normally closer to 40-50 percent! Pulls questions out of no where! His powerpoints are full of errors, and useless to study from! Needs to learn from Maguire or Zibuck...!
I am pleading with you students, if you want to learn anything DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY. It's possible to get an A, but it will be the hardest thing you do through out your college career. Trust me.
Powerpoint of what is exactly in the book. Useless as a teacher, doesn't help you understand**** because he doesn't demonstrate anything.
Dr Cha sometimes had a bad attitude and was rude to his students. His tests are difficult, not straight forward at all, class avg is low, his lectures are boring, the TAs were beyond useless, and he misled us about the curve. VERY IMPORTANT: NO CURVE!!!!
RUDE, does not explain clearly and tests are hard. Not a reflection of what he teaches in class or the stuff in the textbook. Only thing you get right on the test is the certain question he did in lecture that you did not understand but memorized for test
JIN K CHA is the absolute worst teacher ever!!!! He is too arogant with his intelligence. He does not answer questions directly, he tells you too look at the book. On tests, he will not give any points for his own mis communication errors. HE'S JUST GAY!!
What a bunch of ridiculous comments. His lectures were clear, mostly examples. Almost all the test questions came from practice exams or lecture examples.
Funny all the students who actually attended the TA sessions obtained a B or better. University is a learning experience and Science is about problem solving. If you want to buy your way into medical school, by getting marks for having your butt in a chair, you are going to be a lousy doctor. Ask me
His lectures are extremely boring and not helpful in learning the material. He stands up there and teaching out of the book. I have to teach myself everything. The quiz and text averages are always about 60%. He doesn't explain anything throughly or for that matter explain anything at all.
This professor dislikes students and does the bare minimum required. Do not ask him for help. He is not interested.
Very easy professor if you attend the class. He posts most of his lecture notes online. All of the exams are taken verbatum from homework, lecture notes, and previous exams. If you actually read the book and do the assigned problems, you will get a good grade. Great Professor!!! Loved the class!!
You can do good if you come to class every day and read the book. His lectures are boring but if you come prepared its not so bad. He doesn't seem to make himself available after class but he always updates blackboard with lecture notes and problem sets. Just do the work and the class is fine.
If you read the book, you will ace this class big time. His exams are 90% taken from homework problems he assigns and the previous practice exams he gives. Very easy class if you read the book and do all the hw problems.
if you do the homework and practice exams, you will do great on exams. Most of the time his class was even easier than Maguire's class. Don't bother showing up to lecture, it will not help! Just read the book and do the problem sets, and you are set for an A.
This teacher uses powerpoint for his lectures. Come on, how are you supposed to learn mechanisms with powerpoint. Overall, he is monotone, unexciting and his tests are hard, avoid his class if possible.
I don't know why everyone thinks he is so hard. I took him last semester and I got an A in the class. If you actually do the homework instead of complaining about his lectures you are guaranteed an A. You don't need to know mechanisms for his exams. He tells you exact questions that'll be on the exam
horrible, don't go there if you wanna be alive.
Dr. Cha is a great teacher. He clearly explained all of the concepts in organic chemistry, it might be helpful. His lecture is not hard. That is so basic. You have to understand what he teached, because that is essential concept in organic chem.
Extremely unhelpful... Don't ask any questions. No partial credit on the test even throuh you shows the work...( mistake at the end) Don't ask anything associated with lab unless you wanna upset him... Only thing you do in the class is writing without understanding...
Best chem prof. I have had. Much better than Maguire, whom I feel is quite overrated anyway. I would strongly suggest you take Dr. Cha. Also, he essentially tells you ALL the material that will be on the test.
Well mixed feelings no partial credit, you learn that on the first exam, however, if you memorize the homework, and watch out for the "this is on the test" statements in class, you will have no prob. while everyone else how doesnt show at 830am is cursing away at him. In general fair teacher. Kindof the asian john wayne. The quizes are easy
Uses powerpoint for lectures. Things on exams are covered in notes
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Horrible prof with hard exams. be ready to self-teach yourself this entire course. Has slides and expects you to understand mechanisms without him teaching it to you. Do not take him
His lectures are boring, and not very helpful. his exams are tough only because there is no partial credit given. if you do the h/w and come to lecture you should be fine. no partial credit on the exams REALLY affects your overall mark!!!
WTF?!? No partial credit??? He give PLENTY of partial credit. Always recieved partial credit on my exams. PLus, his curve is generous, too. I bombed the final, finished with a 79% and was given a B.
You can't really learn Orgo 2 from powerpoint slides. Exams are easy if you study for them, all problems are from old exams he posts, from homework, or some times he has questions from his lecture. But go to quiz section, chances are your TA is more clear at explaining concept before exams and quizzes
Dr. Cha is a good prof. most of the exam question came directly from the homework or previous exams. But off course there was always altelast one catchy wierd problem. overall a good proof. i would recommend him!!
cha veri good profeser. i get A and not study much..enjoi class very much.
I had him this Fall 06 semester and I thought he was very reasonable. you're pretty much guaranteed 50% of any points on an exam because they come strait off of his old exams. Another 40% is from homework problems, and the rest is based off something he mentioned in lecture. Definitely go to lecture he always drops hints. So basically if you do
He is not a good professor for organic class at all. He does not teach any mechanisms. He wants you to know them. His tests are hard. He will usually put one or two weird question that are very hard to slove, and he does not give any partila credit especially for the cumultive.
YOU CAN'T LEARN ORGANIC II WITH POWERPOINT.. u just can't. His exams at times were tricky but he does give hints or what have you. If yo uread this sir, I highly suggest you teach the class the old fashioned way and students will do so much better!
This teacher is boring and his accent is terrible. I had to withdraw. He didn't teach the basics and he just kept moving on while most of the class didn't have an idea on Organic Chem. Not many quizes to practice on. He didn't pick wisely the best problems to solve from the book. Wants us to memorize 20 carbohydrates struc. Take Zibuck, I got an A-
Pretty much a great teacher. Combines concepts and ideas and gives you an amazing foundation in organic chemistry.
Well, first of all u dont mem. 20 carbs there amino acids, 2 its not hard. Cha is extreamly smart, if your taking oragnic chem its for a reason. You dont want stupid doctors and pharmcists, if u cant get a good grade in organic chem then you have no business being in the profession. One should know the basics before the class. He's good pay attenti
Pretty tough class. Hard to learn organic 2 with powerpoint. The biochemistry section is really hard. Smart man, but not so good teacher.
He is hard. He does not know how to teach. Take with another professor that you can actually learn it, I got a 98 with another teacher. For the person below, organic chemistry does not make you if you are a doctor, so please refrain from stupid comments.
He's a hard teacher but you learn alot more in his class than any of the other teachers for the most part and he tries to teach more useful/real-world problems. You'll have to work your rear end off in his class but just read through your lecture notes and do the hw problems and you should do ok since thats where most of his questions come from.
He is a smart guy, but he doesn't know how to teach. I took the honors chem class with pretty hardworking students. But the average on our organic tests were 61 % and 62 %. That is really low for an honors class. His questions come from the problem set he gives u to practice, so MAKE sure u do them. You have to self teach a lot to do well.Good luck
I think he was a pretty good teacher overall. It is extremely important that you do the homework. At times I found myself referring back to the textbook in order to understand some concepts. He has an accent, which made it a little harder for me to grasp the material, but he speaks very clearly. But he is pretty good overall.
I have to say very boring professor, he may have lotta stuff but simply a very very bad teacher should definitely improve his teaching skills surely most of the students would hate him and im one among them very very bad at teaching i guess he should just stick with research teaching isnt his cuppa tea.....
He knows a lot, but explain everything in a very difficult way, and there is no clear answer for his problem sets, any way his orgo class is hell!!
Awful professor. He should be able to teach better, but is not willing to help students. The school should have someone else to teach this course.
He is really understanding. Humorous. He tries to help. If you ask him to clarify, he will. Quizzes come from problems he assigns. He records visual and audio lectures. If you do the problems, you shouldn't have many problems. He also doesn't speed through the info.
Okay professor at best. His teaching style and clarity isn't great -- powerpoints with some drawn examples thrown in. I feel I didn't get the full understanding of orgo. This man was terrible with communication (with me anyway). Would ignore me when I literally went up to him to ask questions. Pro? He curves so much you'll think it's illegal.
His teaching style is not the best. He kind of expects you to have read the chapters before you attend lectures. His quizzes are ok, but his exams kill. He takes them to a different level, there are other better professors. His FINAL is killer..so drop it(he lets you drop one exam). His lectures are ok, but confusing. Fair grading system though.
Not a bad professor but his teaching style didn't work for me. He expects us to have read the book and learned the basic concepts before class, and then he teaches the details clearly. Problem was, the textbook sucks and wasn't at all helpful for learning. Had to drop because I was failing, but now I'm retaking with another prof and have a 96.
Professor Cha uses mainly PowerPoint slides filled w words & diagrams from the textbook during lectures and adds in few examples which was not very helpful in such a difficult course. You cannot prepare for quizzes or tests simply based off of his lectures because he only touches briefly on certain things and gives little detail. Go to SI to pass!
He tells you exactly what you need to know for each exam and quiz. There is so much extra credit available that several people get an A without taking the final every semester. For a foreigner, his accent is very clear. Organic chemistry is still organic chemistry, but he make it resonably easy to get an A.
His examsquizzes are based on the practice problems assigned. Most ppl just memorize every answer to get an A, if you actually want to understand Orgo don't take him. His lectures are just practice problems without explaining how to get the concepts down first. He does curve and give extra credit. Good luck in Orgo 2 where you won't know anything.
Dr. Cha is a fair professor for the most part. He gives quizzes that are directly from his homework and lecture slides. His tests are fairly easy except for a few problems. The extra points on tests/quizzes are helpful. I'd recommend buying the solution manual and the book and actually doing the homework. If you do, it should be an easy A/A-.
Bad teacher, don't expect to learn. Exams are tough and you don't really know what to expect.
He's not the best prof but super nice and super easy. He takes all of his exam questions from old tests that he posts and the textbook homework. If you do all of the practice he posts, you won't be surprised come exam time. Easy A
I'm indifferent to Dr. Cha's teaching style. A lot of writing on the board and powerpoint slides. No real sense of organization. He does give out a lot of extra credit, so expect an A or A- if you try decently. Do not expect to learn about about organic chemistry. I'd recommend taking another prof if orgo is vital for the future. He is pretty kind.
I gradedhim based on a pre-med/science student. Don't think you'll just show up and getan A. This isn't Children's Fiction class. That saidof all the Chem professors he's easiest. Practicequizzes/exams are EXACTLY like exam if not the same Qs! Notgood @teaching. Sit up front so you can hear him. Take notes because his examples in classare extracred
Probably the easiest orgo teacher considering the generous curves and extra credit. He's very clear on what's the quizzes and exams and they're usually just problems from the book or problems he went over in class. Attendance isn't mandatory but it does help a lot as he goes over potential test questions and generally teaches well.
nice guy, repeats several questions from previous exams but exams are still tough. Gives extra credit. Make sure you do all hw problems as he often puts them on tests/quizzes. Final was killer. Get ready to teach yourself.
One of my easiest classes at Wayne, he uses some hw problems on exams word for word. Gives around 20 extra credit points on exams, and about 2-3 on quizzes; you also get one exam drop. As long as you review the lectures and do the hw you should get an easy A.
Cha is a very nice guy, he really cares about students. However, he needs new TA's. They grade so harsh it's unbelievable and it's because they don't understand the material, so if your answer isn't 100% what is on cha's answer key, they will subtract the whole points off. If the TA's understood the content, they'd be rational with assigning points
Do the homework over&over, attend every single lecture (I know he records them, but being there during the assigned time helps a lot)& attend discussion. Lets you drop the final but with his tough exams you might need to take it anyway. Despite his generous extra credit and curves, my class still seems to be struggling with grades. Hope he curves:(
one of the worst professors i have ever had. In general, its very hard to find a good chemistry professor at wayne state but this has to be the worst. He speaks so quietly during lecture despite sitting in the front it is almost impossible to hear him. His exams are graded wayyyy too tough with little opportunity for partial credit
Best way to ace the class? Go to class, watch Echocenter, and do his old practice quizzes, exams. He is so nice he like gives you at least 100 more points possible than is actually on the syllabus. He's like Oprah with points. But don't push him or he won't be nice. He already knows how much hes giving yall. If you don't go to class, WATCH ECHOCENT
4 exams, 5 quizzes, ACS final, and a drop. If you drop the final you lose 50pts, but he offers extra credit throughout the semester so it wont effect you. Exam + quiz questions come STRAIGHT from lecture and homework. Gives extra credit on final, and curves final grade well too. The man is a godsend. I hope he has the happiest life ever.
Dr. Cha is one of the easiest orgo professors you can have. This does NOT mean an A is handed, because it is isn't. Study lecture notes (I never went to class), DO THE HW PROBLEMS, previous quizzes/exams, and memorize them well. That is practically the key to success. Gives PLENTY extra credit. Do the the HW, prev exams, go through notes and learn.
Had Cha for Orgo 1 too, if you only care about getting an A then Cha is the best choice. For most people, his lectures don't really click with them, so you'll mostly depend on doing book problems and looking at old exams to learn the material. But with the amount of extra credit he provides, he is definitely the easiest orgo teacher to get an A.
worst prof, zibuck is much better considering the fact that you will actually learn from her. he promised a curve and we didn't get one. this class is all memorization which is not as easy because there is A LOT to memorize. no preparation for the acs at all. if you're planning on taking mcat or pcat do yourself a favor AND DO NOT SIGN UP WITH HIM
to the person below me we did get a curve stupid. cha is awesome!! stay on top of practice problems and you will be fine!!
He was just overall a bad lecturer. I had Zibuck for Orgo 1 and I couldn't believe I had to be downgraded to this guy after absorbing Zibuck's teaching style so well. I could tell that his tests were fair, but even then it was hard to pass them when I had to teach myself EVERYTHING. Very sloppy handwriting and goes fast. Doesn't like questions
Cha gave us 20 points extra credit each exam, most of the problems came from the hw in the book. He's not The Worst but he's not the best either. Do all the hw problems and you'll pass. Easy A.
This man is the worst teacher every to walk the face of the earth. His exams are nothing like what he says they will be. The averages for each exam are 40 percent with 10 points Ed on every exam. We just took our final and the average was 75/160 with 25 points EC. The highest grade was a B-. Save yourself and dont take organic chemistry with him.
I studied 30+ hours in total for every exam and still didnt get the A i needed. His powerpoints are nothing like his exams, his slides are so useless, up to 30 e.c. points every exam and still hard to get a good grade. Take the class somewhere else if you have to, just don't expect to do well in his class cause he's the worst teacher in WSU
My second time taking orgo1 and Cha was great bc he gave out tons of extra credit. He gives a take home for 10 points and there would be an extra 10-15 on the exam. People were getting 118%. Sometimes he goes a little too in depth: the exam problems come from his lect or book hw. Exams averaged 65-70, but most didn't come to lect. Drops an exam.
This was my second time with orgo, got an F the first. I should have had a D with Cha but he curves and I ended up with a C+ so bless. So much extra credit, just go to class (he complains a lot when students don't which could affect curves) and do the hw as the exams are hw problems.
Broke my 4.0. Completely self-taught both lecture and discussion were useless. Must read the book. He will sometimes use homework questions as test questions. Homework not graded. Confusing lectures. Moves too fast. Makes up for terrible teaching with giant curves. Should have got B- ended up with B+. So not prepared for Orgo 2
Dr. Cha does give lots of extra credit, however, he does not know how to teach and you will have to teach yourself most of the content on your own.
Dr. Cha is very reasonable with grading. He curves a lot and also offers extra credit. However, you will be graded only on your test performance, and you will have to teach yourself from the book.
I've taken him for Orgo 1 and Orgo 2. It's safe to say he is much better at teaching Orgo 2. He is a very smart man, must go to class to learn. DO NOT SKIP. Do all homework problems he gives you. Be good with him, he'll be good with you.
Dr. Cha is very funny and tries hard to help his students pass. He gives lots of extra credit. He does not use the online homework (OWL), so be prepared to practice the problems from the textbook. Some of his test questions can be questions from the textbook, from old exams which are posted to Canvas, or problems he went over during lecture.
Gives a lot of extra credit which is cool. Exam preparation materials always provided well.
Dr. Cha has a very soothing voice. He explains things quite clearly. He tells you where he'll get the problems from for his exams. And he grants plenty of extra credit. He also lets you drop the final if you do really well on the hour exams. Just know how to do the pset questions and the lecture note probs & ur on ur way to ace this easy class.
If you want to fail orgo 1, then take him. Not only does he not teach what is going on, but he expects everyone to comprehend what he is saying. His exams are beyond impossible. Material on his exams are things that not even orgo 2 students learn... that is how complicated he makes this class. As a person, he is nice. As a prof, do not recommend.
THANK YOU DR CHA! Orgo is so hard, and he made the exams easy enough for me to barely pass. I still have no clue about orgo chem but glad the hell is over. He was funny and made everything clear regarding exams. Lots of practice. The same problems on the homework and practice exam will be on the exams! Take him if you want to save your grade.
Don't bother going to lectures, they don't help. Figure out whats on the exam and watch videos on youtube to teach yourself. Exams are very comparable to the previous exams he puts up. Your grade is only based on exams, but you get to drop the lowest and he gives lots of bonus points. If you can teach yourself, it won't be hard to get an A.
ok he is a smart man (ill give him credit for that) but he should stick to research. His style of teaching assumes you are already smart and know what the hell hes talking about while others are taking orgo1 for the first time. only had 1 easy exam with only 3 extra credit assignments only worth 10 points each. If you want to fail then take him.
Read the book before lectures! Grades are based purely on exams and take-home questions (which are added to exam grades). There's extra credit on the final and you can drop an exam but don't rely on that. His problems are pulled directly from the supplemental homework (please do it) or previous exams. It's an extremely difficult class. Good luck!!
excellent professor
A difficult course made impossible by this man. He expects you to know far more than he leads on. I was lucky enough to have friends that have taken this class before as well as a contact in the chem graduate program at Wayne. I'm not sure how much I can beg anybody reading to not take this class with him. Go for Zibuck. Please.
Not a bad choice at all but his lectures are sooooo dry that make me fall asleep everytime I get to his class. Exams are fair games. I self-taught myself more than him teaching me. Overall I still prefer Zibuck over any other Orgo profs.
heavyy on the curve, curves the grade so much, did not learn much tho
Very smart and wholesome, but does not explain content at all. If you take him expect to teach yourself. Ik people say he curves, but the avg on his last test was a D- WITH the curve; im not sure yet if he'll curve at the end of the semester. His tests are difficult. If you're trying to finish orgo 1 with a good grade, take someone else.
Got a good grade but tbh I won't take him again for Orgo 2. He has so much expectations for everyone which proved in the way he taught ppl. TAs also felt like he didn't do good at teaching too. Avoid!
DONT TAKE THIS PROF. Worst prof I've had at WSU. His lectures make no sense, exams are insanely hard to the point where he has to curve for people to even pass. Way too hard for orgo 1, and he doesn't give u the foundations u need for orgo 2. Take anyone else if you can. He's a nice guy and smart, but trust me don't do it.
He is very smart and this shows in lectures. Read the textbook before class if you want anything to make sense because he covers very advanced stuff during lectures and assumes you already know the basics. However, tests are based on book and past exam problems. Take advantage of TAs and LAs who will actually teach the concepts.
Definitely a smart guy but his lectures are boring and 2/3 of the class didn't even show up unless for exams. Questions are drawn directly from the homework and handouts so be sure to do them!! Can't emphasize enough. Overall I passed this class already, so I don't really have much to say.
Cha is overall a good prof. He just needs to make his presentations more attentive. Curves everyones' grades at the end of semester and I ended up getting a B-. Good lord that I don't have to take Orgo 2 for my major, but Cha would surely be respected for his effort putting into this class.
My god I just took the final. I have never walked out of an exam and said, that's it I FAILED THE CLASS. I was scoring averages on all exams, and I needed this final to boost my grade, instead of giving a fair exam, he conjured up questions from thin air. I am destitute, not financially, but mentally and emotionally. Thank you, Dr. Cha.
If you aren't good at teaching yourself the material, don't take it. Will say that he gives many extra credit opportunities, which can help make up for it. What's the point of the extra credit opportunities if you don't have the resources to learn? Exactly, don't do Orgo 1 with him. Nice guy tho. I only got a decent grade because I had a tutor.
Cha said he would give EC but actually that point was already INCLUDED in the exam, which means you basically just didn't get any extra points. Absolutely hard for no reasons. I should've gone with Wu because her exams are 1000% easier than his. He is there to ruin your GPA, run!
I dropped this class with him and had to take antidepressants. Beware.
Do NOT take this class if Cha is the only professor offered. Terrible professor, questions on the exams are nothing like the ones he presents on slides. Even if you do every single textbook problem, he will somehow find a way to confuse you. Final exam was TERRIBLE, nothing like his previous exams. If you see this name, RUN!!!
This professor is by far the worst professor I have ever had in all three of my years at Wayne. He does not know how to teach and pulls questions never seen before. I went to every lecture and put it many hours studying and still did poorly on all his exams. You can barely even understand him too. If you see Cha RUN!!!
This professor is by far the worst professor I have ever had in all three of my years at Wayne. He does not know how to teach and pulls questions never seen before. Never ever take this professor again. He's a mess! Lectures were confusing and so were the exams. TA wasn't helpful either. Avoid at all cost
Professor Cha is not the reason for poor performance. exams are based on concepts from the book and lectures. He has a cool grading system. tests are 110-120+ points, yet graded /100. That way, you can miss some points and still do well, or get over 100%. Orgo requires repetitive practice. I blame myself. Yes he's tough but passing is on YOU.
