GREAT CLASS !!! GREAT TEACHER
No Comments
This teacher makes you suffer from his mistakes. He doesn't speak English very fluently and struggles with pronuciation. He teaches you more about assignments after he has already assigned them and collected them and given them back with a "B-" on them. You're destined to a "B-" from the start.
He is so hard to understand, but tries very hard to make the class get what he is trying to say, he is very easy to work with and the assignment are easy to get through, there mostly quizes so just show p and read along. buy the book.
easy but boring
This has to be the most boring class i have taken in my entire college career. The instructor jsut reads from the text bood (anyone wanting a nap take this class) He has these quizes that are from a differant text, they are the worst. He expects you to memorize things from a refereance guide. Thye call it that for a reason. What a waist of time $
his english is horrible. I found him to be very difficult to understand and unprofessional in his treatment of students. for this class you only have to take 2 tests and write a 10 page paper thought, so if you can deal with his accent and teaching style it is nice and easy.
At first you may think you are in trouble with your grade and possibly low scores, but in the end you can end up with a good grade. Annoying? Yes. Easy? Yes.
Great man.Jingdongs hard to swallow at first, but once you get used to the accent, it gets easier.Hes qualified, intelligent, friendly. Many will mock cuz he doesnt sound like them. Though his pronunciation is foreign, his insights are great. Hes funny too, i wrote down a lot of one liners. You have to give him a chance.I learned a lot. Recommended.

Jingdong is as awesome as his name! I had a great time in his class and laughed a ton. He was always making fun of himself, but has a great sense of humor for his limited english. I definately reccomend him to anyone!
This is an awesom teacher. He is hard to understand at times due to his accent, but the more you listen to his stories and comments the more you realize just how smart he really has. If you are interested in journalism, he has a lot to teach you. He is very strict about deadline and class attendance. You get a lot out of his classes. Nice guy!
Jing is a great guy. Teaches very worthwhile things if you are in a writing major. His lectures can get boring, but he is funny too. There's a writing assignment almost every day, but they are easy and for a purpose, not just busy work. No final, just a 5 min. presentation. 5 quizzes on AP styleguide. His grading is fair, but you must attend class.
Jing needs to learn english to be able to teach in this country. Very hard headed and very hard to understand. Reading others comments, ... our class must have been black balled by him. Very Rude, Very egotistical, very strict, Non Friendly, never clarified when I asked, made the class feel stupid, confused the class more than he helped. AVOID JING
Jing is an amazing communications instructor. He keeps the material fun and exciting, as well as simple. Very experienced in the field of journalism. U of U graduate in Journalism.
Jing's English is just fine and easily understood. If you can't understand him, chances are you don't have the common sence to make it in the professional world. Look what he is doing with his life. I'd like to see some of you teach in Chinese. Jing's very intelligent and his class is well worth it.
I've taken two classes from Jing and enjoyed them. He stresses the AP style, which is hard at first, but which you need to know for journalism. He is more than willing to meet with students outside of class to help them out. He makes spelling errors sometimes but is clearly understandable when he speaks.
I enjoyed him as a teacher and friend. The class will be made by the students. If the students are rude or funny then he will mirror that same behavior. His english is perfect, better than most of his native english students.
Dr. Liang is clear and organized. He sticks close to the text, gives out 5 quizzes that along with the take-home assignments constitute your grade. He has an accent, but is happy to correct any mispronounciation. He is a fair grader and expects quality writing. Definitely an asset to the school, very recommended.

He is a very nice funny little man. I really think he knows what he is talking about. However he takes half of the semester to go through 3 Chapters in the book. When he teaches he stands infront of class for 50 mins with no visuals just talks and you write the notes down. I can understand teaching with no visuals. But it is hard to listen without!

Great Teacher, really really smart. He is really willing to help anyone who doesn't annoy him. would love to take another class with him!
I think that he is the worst teacher and should not be teaching. Does not listen to feedback from students and accuses false things by his lack of knowledge. I would never recommend anyone to take a class from this teacher. I regret having taken classes taught by him.
Took Media Ethics. Remember to back up your work! He loses things easily and will blame you! Class is too easy and worthless! If he doesn't understand what your saying, he'll embarass you in front of class. Very knowlegable on subject, but can hardly understand him. I wouldn't take this again from him!
I love Jing!!!!!!! He is the BEST. Some people think he's awful because of his accent, but it's not hard to understand. His classes are suupperr easy and so are the assignments. I took Media Ethics and Media Writing from him, eh's the greatest. He's the funniest little man! I love him. Marry me Jingdong.
Lots of students say Jing is unorganized. I think he is great teacher, He knows EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING. You have about 10 writing assignments in this class, they are fairly simple. You also have 4 Ap quizzes that aren't to bad, You will HAVE to buy two books. Your final is a four page research paper and a quick presentation, Take JING
Pretty easy class. Quizzes are straight from slides. Midterm was easy as long as you study your notes and his review. You have to write 2 papers that are simple and present once. Easy class take from Jing
He yells out "HURRY UP" when you are in the middle of taking an exam. He doesn't have any sincere interest in his students or helping them succeed. He rushes through his pointless lectures and is very rude and offensive and calls people out. DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASSES FROM JING.
You either love or hate Jing. I was real irritated with a test we took because half the questions were on paper, half he projected onto the screen for 30 seconds a piece, changing the slides at whim. He's impatient boring and hard to take seriously despite his impressive background. He grades harder than he should considering his teaching style :(
I had a hard time with this teacher. He took more than half the semester just to get through the first 3 chapters. He uses PowerPoint and the info has little detail but the on his quizzes and test he expects a lot of detail. He is not clear on material and grades hard. His test are very confusing and feel like he is trying to trick you.
Attendance is a must. Even though it is a lower division class, he gives out homework everyday, it's simple enough, but a bore. He grades hard considering how easy the class is supposed to be. If you can, take this from another teacher.
Expectnhomework almost everyday, it isn't bad except he doesn't teach you what you need to know he just tells you to use the AP Style handbook. If you ask him for help he will just say try harder. He also gives quizes with topics he hasn't taught yet. I suggest getting a different instructor for this course if possible!
Great teacher. Just give him a chance. Be his friend. He is there to teach. I really liked him! Do your homework and attend class.
His accent is really hard to understand and I don't think he understands students very well either. I asked him for help and he told me to try harder. he also over-reacts when students wisper in class. one time he kept the entire class after the alloted time to lecture one student. I would deffinitly not reccoment this professor.
All you do in this class is learn how to use AP style. He is a huge stickler on accuracy and isn't open minded to a "depends on situation" since grammar rules differ sometimes. The assignments are easy though and the final project is write a page article, presentation on a 4-page paper, and find AP mistakes. His grading tends to lowerish scores.
He is the worst teacher ever. He didn't have an appropriate grading scale so your grade was based off whether he liked you or not. Very boring classes and very boring lecturer. He yelled at several students about being late to class which took away from lecture time. He isn't very clear on homework or test instructions. Horrible teacher, don't take
Boring class. Not as hard as his eleven thirty class which I have also taken. He is still a tough grader but there are not very many assignments. You can get a good grade but is tough to get a great grade.
I wouldn't recommend. His accent is difficult and his grading scale is ambiguous. If you have to take the class. Do it online. This class in general is just a history class that you can't get a history credit for. The Prof. is hard to talk to/understand and he doesn't understand you either. It gets frustrating fast. Avoid class if possible.
He is a great teacher if you get the chance to know him, If you go out of your way to get to know him he will do the same.
Jing is a sweet man but difficult to understand and even harder to communicate with. I would talk to him about assignments and he didn't understand our conversations. It is hard to have a professor that you can't communicate with! It seemed like we as the students knew more about the topics than he did. I would not take this course from him again!
I highly recommend NOT taking a class from Jing. He knows what he's teaching but does not give feed back to students and expects us to be perfect at writing in AP style when we are just learning. The way he treats students makes your self esteem drop. He never gives feed back on your work- just what you did wrong and doesn't help you with fixing it
Jing is probably one of the kindest teachers I've ever had! He is a wonderful teacher, very intelligent. He expects a lot from students, not because he's mean, but I truly think he wants us to meet our potential. If you are lazy, then you probably won't do well in this class. Come to class, and pay attention and you will do well.
teacher does not even know what he is teaching about.
People rag on his accent; I had no problems with it, he just shouldn't be teaching in any language. He is alternately really nice, then outright confrontational with students. Grading is arbitrary (exercises are worth 100, your big final project is worth 10. 10.) No sense. Avoid him, he makes lost of people change to PR from journalism.
I wasn't bugged by his accent either. He knows more about the English language than I do, so props to him. His grading is weird, 100 pts for quizzes, 3 pts for a presentation? ALWAYS takes role. Pretty easy class overall, but I would take another teacher if possible.
English isn't his first language, so in addition to a strong accent, he has a lot of spelling errors and strange grammer on his quizzes and tests. I have taken more than one class with him (even though I try to avoid him) and he seems to be improving...
Liang was an amazing professor. He taught me news-writing and was an amazing teacher. He was hilarious and fun. I learned to be an excellent writer because of him. Expect homework every class period and make sure you do it well because they are a huge chunk of your grade. Don't ever miss quizzes (unless you take them after class).
Very nice man, wants you to succeed. He loves his students. He teaches everything you need to know in class, so if you pay attention you'll pass the quizzes easy. One chapter quiz per week (generally), and two 4-page papers. He's pretty funny too.
I turned in a paper and he claimed that I plagiarized, but wouldn't show me any proof and told me that I was a terrible person, and really just had it out for me the whole semester. I don't know what I did wrong, but I wouldn't suggest doing it, because fixing it was a nightmare, since his first language isn't english.
This class was pretty easy 80% of the time. His chapter quizzes and the two tests are worded so that they're hard to understand and he quizzes on the most obscure information. He is kind of hard to understand, since English isn't his first language, and he isn't clear with his grading, but he is super funny when he's not super boring.
Don't take from Jingdong. He is so hard to sit through. He knows what he's talking about with AP style, but he is unreasonable and so boring. Attendance is absolutely mandatory. You cant even skip one class without it effecting your grade. JIngdong is not willing to listen to students and it altogether very unclear about assignments. Don't take.
Because he is soft spoken and isn't stern, sadly the immature students felt like they could walk all over him and bully him in front of the whole class for a grade they earned when they were only willing to show up to 10% of class. He stated his expectations each class session, and it was clearly on the syllabus. Not for whiners.
Awesome
I took Comm 1130 from Jingdong and it was a tough class. You'll have to buy or rent two books for his class. There is homework due almost every class. I thought I knew grammar until I took his class.. Tough grader, tough class.
His communication skills are terrible. Which is pretty ironic considering he is a communication professor
Felt the class was pointless. Wasn't clear what we were supposed to learn in the class. Lectures were long and boring with pointless tangents. He is a smart professor with lots of life experience but his communication is not very good. Was a bit funny when you got used to him.
Jingdong really does try his best- but his lectures are long and boring and the quizzes are based off of what he lectures, not on the chapters that he tells you to read. Your best way to get a good grade in this class is to go to every class, take notes during the lecture, and ask questions when necessary.
Professor Liang is a great guy, awful professor. I took his course and seriously learned nothing at all, nothing. He is very hard to understand which is unfortunate because you can tell hes very intelligent & passionate about what hes teaching. If you take his courses, be prepared to memorize the entire AP style guide, front to back.
Great and very smart professor.
He is very sensitive and doesn't understand most questions. Just go to class and you'll be fine. His assignments are weighted higher than the quizzes and tests so make sure you do that. My final was 20 Q's and not weighted much more than everything else so that was easy. Longest paper is 3 pages - super easy. Graded on attendance though.
I really want to give Prof Liang a good review because he's such a nice guy, but this class was unnecessarily difficult. He thinks he's clear on his instructions but he's actually pretty confusing. His lectures are very boring even though he tries his best.
I never write reviews and I feel bad saying these things but he was such a bad professor I feel like I have to get on here. Very sensitive guy and also very rude-accuses students of talking behind his back. Grades assignments way to harshly and gives no feedback. Entire class time is tangents and him repeating himself. Hard to understand him.
Jingdong is a good teacher who cares a lot about his class and specifically the subject. I wouldn't say this is a hard class but I do feel like at the end of it I had a clear understanding of the theories. You make up your own questions so the quizzes and tests are not hard. Then you have a final paper and if you follow the rubric - easy A!
Very straight forward class. If you participate and go to class, you'll get an A. We had 2 assignments for the entire semester. He is a nice guy, very knowledgeable about journalism, I learned a lot. People complain about his accent, but I honestly had no trouble understanding him.
Nice and funny guy. He knows a lot about journalism. Class is easy, just make sure you go.
Professor Liang doesn't care about his students success. His grading is very harsh for a intro to communication class. I asked for extra work so I can raise my grade (B-) and he said he would check with the department and he never did. When I asked about it he threw the "Department policy" at me and said too bad. Worst teacher i've had. Don't take!
Took this course during the summer first block. It was fast pace, but doable. He had 8 Quizzes (Provides study guide), 1 Paper (4-5 Pages) and a Midterm (First 4 chapters only)& Final (Last 4 chapters only). Midterm and Final are the same questions from quizzes, so remember them and keep your papers. If you miss more than 3 classes grade goes down.
Jingdong Liang is a good teacher, show up to class, participate and take notes and you are guaranteed to pass. His quizzes are not difficult, he will give you a study guide for it, and his midterm and final are basically all of the quizzes taken during the semester.
Verrryyyy boring teacher. He is constantly repeating himself and teaches the same thing 4 or 5 times in a class and then goes over the same thing for 2 weeks of class. The homework assignments are simple, but redundant. His accent didn't bother me at all though. Just have to get used to it. If you can, try and find another teacher. It's worth it.
This class is so poorly organized. He doesn't clearly explain any of his assignments and he doesn't use canvas so you are never sure what the content of the assignments are. There is no structure to his lectures and there is basically no point in going to class besides the fact that attendance is required.
I am going to avoid taking a class from this guy again. He knows what he is talking about but sometimes it doesn't come across that way. It's hard that he spends 50% of the semester on APA format and grammar when he himself doesn't know good grammar, even watching him write on the board was painful. He's a TOUGH GRADER, and gives NO room to improv
Don't waste your time taking a class with him. Not worth the headache. Too much lecture and not enough assignments. Do bad on quizzes and your grade will suffer because that about all you get. 2 papers 4 quizzes. One useless class.
He really isn't that bad as others are saying.. As long as you show up (attendance matters!!) then you should be fine. You are graded by quizzes and two papers, one where you have to present with a group. Just go to class and you'll be fine. His quiz questions are identical to the test questions. So pay attention!
Jingdong was one of my favorite professors ever. He is hilarious and just precious. There aren't many assignments, so it is pretty quiz heavy. He gives out a study guide for each quiz and then the midterm and final just have the same questions from the quizzes. There are a couple of papers but they are pretty easy.
He is a very tough grader and does not make expectations clear. I barley passed and I did every assignment and rarely missed class. Hes hard to understand and his teaching style was hard to follow.
Professor Liang is amazing, I enjoyed his class and I really like him as a person. I learned so much about journalism. The only thing that I didn't like was the weight of how things were graded. Assignments were 45%, so if you missed a few points it hurts you.
This professor is not only very hard to understand not as in accent, as in just how he teaches. All of his assignments are worth very little points so if you miss any you're in trouble. If you miss a test in class he makes you take it in his office while he watches you. There are also no extra credit opportunities even if half the class is failing.
The irony of this man teaching communications is not lost on me. The class is confusing because of his poor command of the English language. You will be paying tuition to teach yourself this course. Everyone can get a solid B with a little effort, but an A is near impossible because of his incorrect grammar. He takes major offense to criticism.
Great class! Jingdong is a great guy. He actually cares about his students. This is my second class i have taken from him. I took his class two years earlier and he still remembered me! 10/10 would recommend.
This is the worst online class I have ever taken. He copied the class from another professor, but he isn't using any of the same projects, exams, etc. even though they are still listed on canvas. He posts quizzes 2 or 3 days before they are due via announcement on canvas. He even lost all of our quiz grades half way through the semester. AVOID HIM
IF YOU WANT TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS CLASS, TAKE IT ONLINE! Also, make a study group very early on! Itll help with getting correct answers on homework. Professor Liang is actually super nice and understanding, I really like him. But if you try to do this class on your own it will be difficult so send an email to the students and make a study group
This class is nothing like the other classes you will be taking. He posts announcements, that you MUST read. There are no discussions, only assignments from the book which can be confusing to some. If you have to take his class because there are no other options, I would recommend creating a study group. Overall, I learned a lot about writing.
This class was fully online and unlike any other class i've taken before. there was only about 12 things ( including quizzes) for him to grade and so if you miss points on one it drops your grade a ton. you have to check canvas lots because he will post quizzes the day before they are due. normally im a 4.0 student but i got a C in this good luck!
Such an easy class with a great teacher. Hes very nice, understanding and funny at times. His lectures may seem long and provides A LOT of information, but its worth it. His assignments are straightforward and cover whats been discussed in class. I think hes a good teacher and you can clearly see he knows what hes talking about.
Listen, he is an incredible professor and will teach you things you will use throughout your life. The only thing you got to do is show up to class. All material is there, and he makes it funny to keep the lecture enjoyable. Gods honest truth
The assignments on canvas are not easy to see when they are actually due, he does not add the due date on canvas then all the sudden all the assignments will be due. He is not workable at all, he does not care about you or the grade you get. There are not a-lot of quizzes but they are hard and he grades hard, the answers are always trick questions.
Honestly just a really pointless class. Didn't learn anything and he just stands up front and talks for an hour. Avoid it if you can.
Absolutely nothing taken away from this class other than learning for the first time some professors only care about being right even when they are completely wrong. There are no rubrics or grading guidelines. Most importantly, he will never include due dates. Kind of a hit or miss getting your work in on time depending on how he feels.
I wouldn't wish this class upon my actual worst enemy. He's a different animal entirely. Got sick a few times during the semester, and he wouldn't let me make anything up (???) hence my grade. Made me cry in front of the whole class because he was being so rude and accusatory. Didn't ever post due dates on canvas but was strict about them. SO BAD.
Everything was good except for grading. There aren't many assignments, which means you need to do great on all of them to get a good grade. Also, I didn't feel that the grading criteria for the final was clear. He wasn't understanding of my misunderstanding, resulting in my grade going from an A to a B+.
Go to class, take quizzes and you'll pass with minimal effort. He is lecture heavy and you must make it to class. He is funny and a bit disorganized. He is knowledgeable and you will learn if you simply listen. You can tell he is passionate about topics. Best thing is to get him going off on a tangent. Hilarious, try it.
Genuinely a terrible Professor avoid if at all possible. Other reviews have pointed out the irony of him teaching communication, I would like to reiterate that point. Emailing him was like pulling teeth only to get a copy pasted message straight from the syllabus that answered nothing and contained incorrect information. Very rude when confronted.
Professor Liang is a very odd case. On one hand, his teaching style is very old school but it works with the material then his use of Canvas with the class is so confusing. He doesn't fully understand how to work Canvas which can make getting grades put in annoying. Also if you don't come to class you will not pass simple as that.
This professor is very difficult to communicate. Which is ironic for being a communication's professor. Very strict on assignments, and not tech savvy at all. If you plan to take this course online, expect assignments to be locked into weeks so no getting ahead on projects. Also full of info on why you should switch to a communications major.
Honestly impossible to communicate with. Assignments would close early and I couldn't get an answer on why. The information on the syllabus was incorrect about due dates, how to contact the professor, who the professor of the class even was. I have sent emails with questions that wouldn't get answered for over a week, even after followup emails.
Professor Liang was a good instructor. Comms is easy enough & will consist of weekly quizzes(1-2), application work, and discussion. My only recommendation is to have an idea of your Creative project (Final) by mid sem, last week is loaded with reg coursework due (work ahead if possible) + 3 final projects; Creative Proj, Rationale, + Presentation
Professor Liang was the best! He really loves what he teaches about and you can see that through the way he presents his lectures. He also really cares about his students! I felt very cared for and we always had fun and learned a lot in his classes. He is also very funny and tells good jokes during the lectures!
I had Professor Liang for a class this past semester, as much as he was a super nice guy, the class was HORRIBLE!!! He was all over the place, planning assignments at the very last minute, and I honestly didn't learn anything from him. If you wanna take a swing at this class, be my guest.
really nice guy, super easy class but he was definitely all over the place and kinda hard to understand. barely any work though, so take this if you want an easy A.
Course mostly consisted of discussion boards, quizzes on textbook chapters, recording speeches, and one paper. Several assignments had unclear instructions and little assignment feedback was provided. Not much professor interaction needed, professor was willing to work with me on late submissions for reduced credit. Not awful for an intro course.
Professor Liang's class is a mixed bag - his teaching style can be hit or miss, but the workload is manageable. Using unstuckstudy and staying on top of the assignments helps a lot.
I loved this professor!! He actually tries to build connections with his students and caters to your needs rather the curriculum. I would definitely recommend him. He gave good use ful feedback on our presentations also. No homework outside of class and no quizzes or tests. just one final speech.
Great teacher. One of the most caring teacher's I've had. He really wants you to do good. I learned a lot in this class and he made the whole class feel good. Everyone in the class loves him.
This professor has copied and pasted the work from another professors course so he in unsure of what the assignments are. If you reach out, he will not respond. He has a secret rubric and always finds things to dock you on. If you are looking to be confused, learn nothing, be stressed and drop your GPA, this is the professor for you!
It is amusing to me that this professor teaches communication courses, but it seems that this is an area in which he severely lacks. If you directly reach out with any questions or concerns, don't expect a prompt or helpful response. His feedback on assignments is always lacking, leaving little room for growth. Do not take this professor!
Loved This class. Such a nice professor, Pretty easier grader with clear grading criteria.
Such a sweet man! He was kind, but the class wasn't really worth it. Lectures touched on topics that weren't relevant to public speaking, and it felt like the class should have been a half-block class. He is an easy grader, and there isn't much hw outside of the class. You have to give 5 public speeches. Easy A class, but not very educational.
I have mixed feelings about this professor. The class was easy enough and he was reasonable. I had several issues at the beginning of the semester, but it got better. The quizzes were oddly written, but he is easy on grading and worked with me. He was also very responsive on canvas and did fix mistakes he made. I think he was ok overall.
This is probably the worst-structured class I have ever taken. If you are a wiz at grammar and need an easy A, this class may be for you, but if you thrive off of structure and any explanation of what we are doing at all, pick another teacher.
Professor Liang was so caring and helpful! He really created such a great atmosphere for the class! I loved his jokes he would tell. I would 10/10 recommend this class to everyone!!!
