Dr. Shins passion for teaching is unparalleled to anyone at Binghamton University. She clearly shows that she wants her students to succeed. Her lectures are very engaging, thorough and clear. Her teaching style, personality and how she cares about each of her students make students want to come to class!
AMAZING PROFESSOR! Genuinely cares about her students and tries to make the material as accessible as possible. Explains the material super well. I will be looking out for her for future psychology classes!!!!!! TAKE HER CLASS!!!
I learned so much from Professor Shin not only about the subject matter but about graduate school and life after college. BEST professor Ive ever had in Bing!
Dr. Shin is one of the best professors at Binghamton. You have to put a lot of effort into her class but her grading is fair and her expectations are clear. Her class is discussion heavy and there is a lot of reading, but she is really encouraging and supportive. It's clear she cares about her students and her teaching. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Probably the most caring and thoughtful professor Ive ever met! She is super smart and funny. She tries to engage everyone by including a lot of activities. She is a tough grader but willing to help. She also cares a lot about students mental health. All my friends who took her classes recommended her. Now I know why!!!!
I appreciated how well she handled the transition to online. I took her online summer class before (PSYC 220) so I kind of knew what her class would look like. She posted lecture videos along with powerpoint and there were short quizzes based on her lectures. I'm taking her class again over the summer and I hope the format will be the same.
You can tell that she really cares about her students which is rare to see in this school. I took this class over the summer so it was intense but doable. She makes you read and write a lot but makes it clears what she expects from you. You don't really need to read the textbook so don't waste your money buying the textbook!
This semester has been particularly difficult for me but this was the one class that I enjoyed and didn't have to worry about. Very informative and well-structured class. Rubrics are clear and the lectures are interesting. I've been doing better on the lecture portion of the class so I wished that the quizzes weighed more.
Very Helpful. I had a horrible TA but was able to get help from Dr. Shin. She explains things really well. Her quizzes are not that bad if you watch her videos. I rarely read the textbook but still managed to do well.
Definitely NOT an easy class. This class would have been better in person, especially the labs but she's a solid professor. She knows her stuff and is very understanding.
I took multiple classes with her and shes just the best! She is smart but very humble and approachable. Tests are easy but you do have to read and write a lot for her classes. She says shes socially awkward lol but shes very sweet. I learned a lot from her about racism and sexism and also about grad school. Highly recommend her!
You will know right off the bat that she cares. So much. She is way too over worked honestly. This seminar class might be hard for non-psych major though, because it is research oriented in a way. You need to be familiar with reading through academic journals and writing in APA format. She grades tough, but also customizes her feedback. She's great
She knows how to teach. She explains rather difficult/boring concepts very clearly and provides many real life examples. Looking forward to taking more classes with her in the future.
Wish more profs were like Shin. V organized and outlines everything needed. Do the work and it/s an easy A. Lab might be tough if you have a bad TA but for the most part the class is smooth sailing. Quiz and lab assignment due every Friday at midnight. Took 1-2 hours a week and there's no lecture either. Highly recommend
She's great. Her lectures are clear and her rubrics are very helpful. Wish she taught the lab portion as well. Highly recommend her class
Not an easy class, especially the lab assignments but Dr. Shin is an amazing professor. She's always willing to help even with the lab assignments and are very understanding.
She's so understanding and willing to listen to students. Her lectures are so interesting and she really pushes you to apply what you learn outside of class. Lab was a bit difficult because of how much writing and application there is. Lab grade is from your TA, but grading is straightforward and standardized, but a good TA explains what you need.
Finally a professor who is willing to listen and help!!!! More professors should be like her. I really enjoyed her class. Highly recommend!!!
I highly recommend Dr. Shin! She is really caring and the lecture portion of the class is more than fair. The discussion portion of the class is taught/graded by a TA but the grading criteria was clear. If you manage your time by working on the one research paper throughout the semester and watch the lectures, it is easy to succeed!
Excellent lecturer. Talks very clearly and doesn't ramble. As long as you watch her videos, you will do well at least in the lecture portion of the class.
Dr Shin was a phenomenal professor. She really cared a lot especially this semester as her class was online. She navigated the use of her online classroom extremely well. All the assignments for this class were laid out from day 1 and she even gave us some extensions if students felt like they would not be prepared. Definitely recommend.
Dr Shin is an amazing professor. Psyc480A was a last resort for me because the other classes I wanted were full and it ended up being my favorite class because of Dr Shin. You can tell she really cares about her students and their well-being, especially during these COVID times. This class is very easy if you watch her lectures. Highly recommend!
A professor who genuinely LOVES teaching and cares about her students. I learned so much from her not only about research methods but about grad school and major in psychology in general. I will definitely be taking more classes with her!
Professor Shin did a great job with her lectures and keeping students updated on what they needed to do. There was a lot of turmoil with information getting to the TAs and then to the students; many TAs were giving different instructions on lab assignments leading to confusion. I got lucky and had an amazing TA, but others weren't as lucky
Best professor. Take the class
Professor Shinn was very responsive and her video lectures were very interesting. As long as you watch her videos and read the textbook, you will be fine. For the lab, go to the TAs office hours if you want to do well and make sure you don't procrastinate because the assignments are really time consuming.
A tough grader but an amazing lecturer! I have taken 3 classes with her and enjoyed all of her classes.
Professor Shin was very understanding and accommodating with the online situation during the Fall 2020 semester while still keeping the students on their toes. A large portion of this class comes from the discussion section which is handled by a grad TA, not her. For her lecture component, she was very knowledgeable and made topics clear.
She teaches the lecture part of the class and its great. She explains clearly and gives a lot of examples. Definitely go to her office hours you will learn more. Lab part of the class can be a hit or miss depending on who your lab TA is.
I never rate my professors but Dr. Shin deserves an amazing rating. Her lectures are short and sweet, always getting to the point. Well explained. Her quizzes are super easy if you just watch her lectures! Textbook helps greatly as well. Research paper is very time consuming but very doable. Clear instructions, fair grading.
Professor is kind and shows knowledge of the material, but often confusing with grading purposes. There are no discussions allowed on any assignments grading given back and this did hurt my grade quite a few times. I found it takes the first few quizzes to know what to focus on, but the majority of the grading for the class is in the second half.
Dr. Shin did asynchronous lectures this semester. Her videos were short and to the point. Lecture and quizzes aren't too bad. There are writing assignments due every 1-2 weeks. You spend the entire semester creating outlines for each section of a research proposal, so the final paper is pretty easy to write.
Professor Shin is amazing. She makes the class interesting and engaging. There are a lot of writing assignments and she is not an easy grader but there are grading rubrics and she is always willing to help. She gives detailed feedback so that helps with the next assignments.
This was my first class with Dr. Shin but she quickly became my favorite professor. She is passionate about teaching and loves to talk to students. She always stays in the zoom after class in case anyone has any questions. I highly recommend her!
She has a very strict rule about plagiarism so be sure to check the turn it in report after you submit. Even though the labs are taught by the TAs, Dr. Shin is always willing to help so definitely go to her office hours. There is a quiz every week which isnt too bad. Just watch her lecture videos and youll be fine
Prof Shin is knowledgeable and kind. I would say she is a tough grader but her grading is clear and fair. This class would have been better in person but I still learned a lot about prejudice and discrimination.
Dr. Shin is a tough grader but truly cares about her students and wants her students to LEARN and IMPROVE. Highly recommend her seminar if you want to learn.
So much work to do. She is inflexible. She is very mean sometimes.
She is very caring, kind and funny. There are short exams every week and a lot of writing assignments, which can be overwhelming but totally doable. She does have high grading standards but she provides clear instructions and there are grading rubrics for all the assignments so you know how she will grade. HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER CLASS!
She taught the lecture which I really enjoyed. You have to make an appointment to meet her but she's very flexible and always willing to help. The labs are taught by her TAs but you can get help on the lab assignments from her if you reach out.
Prof. Shin made the class engaging and fun. Her video lectures were brief, to the point and her zoom classes were discussion based. She was not afraid to share her personal stories to explain the material. She was also very kind, caring, understanding and approachable. I loved her personality and teaching style.
She has a clear grading criteria but she is a rather tough grader.
Dr. Shin's lecture videos were easy to understand. Quizzes are not hard if you stay on top of the material. Class consists of handing in papers, which are graded by your TA. I feel that the TAs all had different expectations for assignments, so grading isn't always clear. If you're good at writing, u should have no issue getting an A in this class.
She gives detailed feedback and always encourages to come to her office hours so she can help. She clearly wants her students to succeed. She is not an easy grader but her rubrics are clear and she goes over the assignments several times in class.
Her lectures are clear and she gives many practical examples to explain the material. There are so many assignments for the lab but they are doable.
I strongly recommend this class to anyone interested in becoming a teacher or anyone interested in learning more about themselves as a student. Very engaging and informative.
Not an easy grader but she is always willing to help. Her lectures are very clear and she gets straight to the point. Attendance is mandatory and there are 5 weekly quizzes on top of paper assignments.
Highly recommend Dr. Shin's class! She is smart and can be strict but approachable and understanding. There are no exams in her class (only papers). Her lecture videos are clear and engaging. I learned so much from this class.
Quizzes are easy but assignments are HARD! But she is willing to help you if you reach out to her. Very kind and understanding. Her lectures are easy to understand as she does a good job explaining and providing real life examples.
She is an excellent lecturer. Assignments are quite challenging but her grading criteria is clear.
I loved taking this class with Professor Shin. Her grading can be tough but fair and clear. Looking forward to taking her classes in the future.
I want to be a counselor for minority students so Im obviously interested in multicultural issues but Dr. Shin increased my interest even more. She does alot of inclass discussions and activities which are really fun. I highly recommend this class to anyone interested in multicultural issues!
tests for this class are pretty easy (4 but one is dropped) but the assignments are very hard. (one 10 page research paper and a bunch of mini assignments). TAs are all over the place and dont give good instructions so make sure you choose a good one, your grade depends on it
Great lecturer. Reasonable exams. Asks a lot of questions in lecture so make sure you come prepared.
The lecture portion of this class with DR Shin is very easy, and the four exams (one dropped from the first three) are straightforward. However, there are A LOT of writing assignments which make up most of your grade and are graded by your TA, and the TA suck, your grade basically depends on your TA
MUST attend class if you want to do well. Exams are 100% based on lecture and discussion. Three exams one can be dropped, two papers, and presentation. Not the easiest class but very interesting
Exams are not too bad as long as you come to class. She posts the slides but you still need to take a lot of notes in class. Her lectures are pretty straightforward forward. There are a lot of inclass activities and discussions so you need to come to class.
Professor Shin is very knowledgeable and communicates her expectations very clearly. She doesn't take attendance but you need to come to class if you want to do well. Her slides are available before class but she gives a lot more information during lecture so you need to take notes.
I was dreading taking this class but I actually ended up LOVING it!!! Dr. Shin tries to give a lot of real life examples to make the rather dry material relatable and fun. Lecture slides are posted but there are review questions pretty much in every lecture which she doesn't include in the slides
Dr Shin clearly cares about her students and their success. She is a greater lecturer and such a kind soul. Her tests can be tricky if you don't study but they are manageable. She tries to find ways to give as much extra credit is possible and makes scores are fair. I would 100% take a class with her again.
Dr Shin is one of my favorite professors at Binghamton! Shes so kind and caring, and she cares a lot about what she teaches especially in her senior seminars. She grades very fairly and the workload was pretty light for a 400 level class.
Dr. Shin truly wants her students to succeed. She makes sure that students understand the assignments and is always happy to meet with her students. Highly recommend her seminar!
There is a textbook for this class, and it is a really easy read, but you don't have to read it if you go to lecture. With that being said, if you do read the textbook, lecture is not really necessary. However, I still went to class because she is a great professor, who truly cares about her students and she explains everything very well!
Dr.Shin is very nice. The lecture portion of this class is fairly easy. There is a textbook, but honestly her lectures line up with it, so you'll be chilling if you don't read it. However, the lab portion is terrible, hope you have a good TA this class would be better off without it. But other than that, she is good at lecturing and a good choice.
Dr. Shin knows how to teach a large class. She is good at engaging the students in class and explaining difficult concepts. I would definitely recommend Dr. Shin's class!
Dr Shin is incredibly knowledgeable, understanding, and highly organized. She makes her expectations very clear, and they are very fair. Participation, attendance and textbooks are not required, though she suggests them to get a better grade. Possibly one of the best professors at the entire university.
Dr. Shin is a very nice lady and genuinely cares to see her students do well. She makes the criteria clear and gives 4 tests, final is optional but will replace the lowest exam grade, all only 30 questions each. Lab portion of the class was a mess but wasn't her fault, she tried to guide us the best she could. Great professor.
Graded only on three exams and CITI Training which is sort of a given; there is also extra credit from review sessions. Dr. Shin is extremely organized and fair, her exams come straight from the textbooks and lecture, and if you really want an A you can get one fairly easily, but you're gonna have to work for it.
Your grade is very straightforward, based on a training module, best 2/3 lecture exams, and discussion grades. This isn't a bad thing, as long as you study and put in effort, it is not hard to do well in this class. Even if you have a bad test, Dr. Shin gives you a drop. Dr. Shin is very available outside of class and answers emails so quick.
Grade comes from 3/4 exams (one drop) and CITI training. The other half comes from the discussion section. Nice professor and very accessible outside of class. Exams are difficult, but if you put in effort and study hard, you will do just fine.
I liked Professor Shin's style of lecturing: very straightforward, receptive to questions, and specific about what she wants you to know for the test. Sometimes explanations of topics were not as concise. There are 4 tests (one dropped), and a lab portion (8 pg. paper, etc.) in this class. The lab is the worst part.
4 exams but one can be dropped. Her lectures are interactive and engaging. I actually enjoyed going to class.
Highly organized, gives engaging and interactive lectures, and genuinely cares about her students. I actually now enjoy Research Methods because of dr. Shin
I took Multicultural Psychology and Research Methods with Professor Shin and absolutely loved both classes. She's passionate about what she teaches and really cares about her students. She can be a tough grader but she's always willing to help. I'd highly recommend!
Shin is very straight forward. Exam questions can be tricky, but she truly takes the time to explain the information you need to know. Depending on your TA, the lab section is pretty straightforward and fair. Need to put in the work, but not nerve wreaking.
Prof Shin is a caring professor and really enthusiastic about teaching. Her exams can be challenging but one can be dropped so that helps. She takes time to explain the material and asks questions to help you think and test yourself. Your lab experience will depend on who you get as a TA though.
I love Dr. Shin. This was my second class with her and I recommend her to everyone. The class was interesting and easy to participate in because the material was relatable and Dr. Shin is so nice (I have anxiety so its RARE that I participate). I definitely recommend if you need an upper level elective for psych!!
Definitely take research methods with Dr. Shin. Her lectures are straightforward and she is very receptive to questions. Make sure to study because the exams can be challenging, but she makes the material very easy to understand. I didn't realize this was a W class at first so the 10 page research proposal and other assignments were a surprise
Dr. Shin is probably the nicest professor I've ever had. The main things you're graded on are 2/3 exams, a student led discussion, and a poster project. The lectures are fun and engaging and the material is easy. Dr. Shin is also very caring and, on multiple occasions, gave points back on questions she considered unfair. 10/10 class and professor.
Definitely recommend this class/prof. Lectures were very interesting and there wasn't much work outside the main projects. She is also very nice! I am not a big fan of public speaking or group projects so be warned that they take place in this class, but they weren't too bad (one main thing) and I think they are a given for any seminar class.
Amazing lectures, gives great feedback, but tests are a little challenging. With that being said, the tests account for less than half your grade (450/1000 total points) so its not too bad as long as you do well on the discussion portion of the class.
Dr. Shin is an amazing lecturer! I really enjoyed going to her class. There are 3 exams but one can be dropped. Also she has no questions asked makeup policy where you can take any missed exams at the end of the semester. Lab is taught by grad TAs and I personally had a good experience with mine.
She teaches the lecture part of the class which is only about 50% of the grade. The other half comes from your TA. She's a good lecturer but very unresponsive to requests for clarification on grading. Will send you the same copy and paste email that she sends to other students who are concerned that their TA is grading unfairly.
Excellent professor!! Assignments and exams were reasonable and class content was very interesting. Lowest test grade gets dropped. Made the classroom a comfortable environment. She's not a harsh grader. Definitely one of the easier seminars.
Professor Shin is a great lecturer. She is warm and is willing to repeat herself until you fully understand a topic. Tests were straight forward and the lab for the class isn't too challenging. Definitely recommend taking her section for PSYC344.
She is easily my FAVORITE professor! She really cares about her students. She doesn't mind explaining the same concepts repeatedly. That said, the lecture is only 45% of the grade. The majority of the grade comes from the lab. Her exams are not the easiest but they are fair. There are 4 exams including the final but one lowest can be dropped
Great professor but her slides do not really teach you about much, nor does she explain more during lecture. She is super nice but reading the textbook is key, or doing a lot of outside of class work (that could be wrong or unimportant).
Must attend lecture if you want to do well. She asks a lot of questions in class, which might be on the exam. Her lecture slides are posted before class but it's pretty much just outlines so you need to take lots of notes. She is very nice and willing to help. She stayed after class on several occasions to answer questions
Dr. Shin is a great professor. Although attendance isn't mandatory, going to lectures will help you do a lot better. The textbook readings aren't mandatory but they do help especially if you are confused on something. It can be boring topics but overall I enjoyed taking this class with Dr. Shin. She is very knowledgeable and helpful.
You will know what's gonna happen
She's a super nice and caring person, however the class has a horrible structure. Exam questions are tricky, so I recommend reading the textbook. Discussion is a mess, it all depends on who your TA is. Three exams and a cumulative final are only worth 45% of your grade the rest comes from two discussion papers that you have very little guidance on.
Prof Shin is one of the best lecturers and most caring prof I had at Bing. She explains well and tries hard to make the class interesting. Some of her exams are hard but she is always willing to help. 3 exams with 1 drop and a cumulative final
Professor Shin is a great professor, who teaches extremely well, especially when the information being taught is quite boring. Seriously its so boring. 3 exams (ones dropped), a final, and two papers. Papers have clear grading criteria, if you go to your TA's office hours they'll help you do well. Friday 5:50pm discussions are rough to go to.
Yes it's an extremely boring class but Dr. Shin makes it engaging. Although participation isn't graded in the lecture, it helps a lot to participate and answer the questions in class. She asks questions pretty much in every lecture to help students understand and quiz themselves.
Dr. Shin is a great person, she is very likable however, she only reads off of her slides and her slides are a bit bare. You will have to study extra for her tests because they are the only ones you will be graded off of.
Dr Shin explains well and is willing to help. She posts her slides but there's not much so you need to come to class for notes. She also asks a lot of questions in class and does activities so coming to class will help. Exams can be tough but final wasn't too bad
I was expecting this class to be boring and lecture heavy since it's a 200 student class but it was much more engaging/ interactive. The material is still boring and dry but she tries to make it interesting. She is really animated and constantly asks questions so it's hard to fall asleep in her class lol
Prof. was great! The material is boring but she does her best to make it engaging and she explains everything very clearly. The lecture is based off 3 lecture exams (With one dropped test) and 1 final cumulative exam. Exams were fairly easy, I did not need to read the textbooks to do good on the exams. She is also very accessible outside class.
Although the topics can be dry, Prof. Shin engages the class well. Attendance is a must - she asks questions that can appear on exams. I found Unstuck ai and the free textbook very helpful for studying.
prof shin is caring and passionate about what she teaches. I really enjoyed going to class and learning about bias and discrimination and other topics related to multicultural psychology. There are 3 exams but only 2 count towards the grade. The final paper was challenging to write but it was fun as I got to come up with my own intervention idea
