If you havent taken Calculus before, do NOT take his class!! You will be completely lost!! He is extremely unclear and terrible at explaining things!!
he is insanely hard
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE TEACHER NEVER TAKE HIM
Awful teacher...he cant do a problem correctly on the board...boring teacher...if u have never taken calk then dont take this class
****, didnt change his teaching style at all after our class of 18 dropped to 8 people after everyone withdrew afer the second test.
So hard. So very unclear. He needs to learn how ti freakin teach and next time, dont have a test the day after St.Patricks day.
HORRIBLE... made math impossible and was SO incredibly hard. Our class went from 17 to 8 because he was failing everyone.
awful teacher! went way too fast and doesn't explain at all! if you've never taken calculus you are screwed if you take him.
Impossible teacher, never take him. Can't keep a clear thought in his mind. Should teach some extremely advanced math instead of basic calulus. Smart guy but horrible teacher and unfair grader. Never take him, worst math teacher I have had so far.
awful awful awful - drop his class as soon as you can
This man is hilarious. A great topic of post-class discussion, too. (him, that is- not the class). Hes not the best teacher, but he does care about his students. You can retake tests and bring notes to the final. will stay after class to help students.
this man is the most unbelievable/awful person i have ever had to deal with. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. You will fail. doesnt know how to teach. once gave me a 52.5 on am exam----take the half point and shove it. on the next test, he gave me an F-, its apparently a new grade. the man is a nut case.
First off, he is a nice professor and wants his kids to know the material. (Lets you retake tests and use notes) He is however very hard and fast teaching which will screw you if you have never taken calc before. If you take him its not the end of the world just go to class and do the homework
Class is next to impossible. he goes way to fast and assumes that everyone is a geius, just because he is. don't take this class if you've never taken calc, i did and it's horrible.
Please, do not take this class
worst teacher ever
He moves way to fast, and assumes everybody has seen the material before. Plus he gets annoyed when you ask questions. Also, he has quizzes nearly everyday which is supposed to be on the homework, but instead is on an advanced version of it. Don't take this class!
One of the most knowledgeable math professors I've had. He has a dry wit and keeps you interested. Tests/homework problems actually make you think. Great bow tie collection.
Do NOT take this class if you've never taken calc before! Precalc is not enough. He assumes everyone already knows it, and unfortunately some people do. Talks and teaches fast, his "questions, questions, any questions?" routine gets irritating b/c you don't even have time to write it all down, forget about ask questions. Stay clear or teach youself

yikes
This guy is for Math geniuses only. I have a history of doing well in Math but this class just destroyed me. I think he says things in his brain that he doesn't say out loud so you are left to interpret what he just did on the board. His teaching style is a total spazz. He chucks info at you and he doesn't allow you time to actually digest it all.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! This guy couldn't teach someone how to tie their shoes. Almost daily quizzes, teaches like you have a PhD in math. Homework counts for nothing, lectures are basically going over problems in the book, exams have NOTHING to do with what you're taught! AVOID AT ALL COSTS
By far the worst teacher I have ever had. Is incapable of teaching. Forget about asking a question because he will make you feel like an idiot. Avoid him at all costs!
Enjoyable class...interesting material.
This is the first class that I have ever had to drop. He is impossible to understand, very confusing, very frustrating. Big problem: the book used was written by him and is equally as confusing. I suffered through 2 full weeks and had to quit to keep my sanity. Go elsewhere for Number Theory!
Hard class but he knows his**** and wants you to too. Dont be scared off by the first test he doesnt want to fail u so hell make em easier as time goes on and give u chances to pull it up like dropping lowest grade or replaceing it w/ final grad and plent of extra credit.
WORST teacher EVER! Assumes you already know material. Makes you feel like an idiot if you ask a question and basically doesn't answer. Mumbles, talks to the board. I have never been so frustrated with a class! Needs to retire NOW!
probably the hardest class I've ever taken, you really have to work on the material (not just doing the problems, but understanding them) and have a good grasp on the topics to do well, but hes very willing to help you if you're struggling. Wears Bow Ties.
first f minus i have ever received as a grade.
Least helpful teacher ever. I failed his class last fall. It was my first F ever. But retook the same course over the summer with a good teacher at Merrimack and got an 'A'. Does not help if your having trouble and doesn't respond to emails. Anyone that says he is a good teacher is in his highest level math courses and math comes natural to them
You must work hard in his class. Textbook and a tutor will become your best friends.... BUT... He gives a lot of extra credit and whenever you go to his office hours he will help you out!
This was by far the worst human being I've ever been in contact with in my life. Doesn't believe in teaching, just "presenting the material". He kicked me out of his class when asking for help. He expects you to know things even when he doesn't. Tests are impossible. Ridiculous that he is employed.
So so bad. Mumbles incoherently all through class. Refuses to answer questions unless you are one of his favorites who already knows the material and you question is superficial. If you don't already know the stuff he is supposed to teach, forget it because he is noticably bothered by students who come to class assuming they would be taught.
Can you read chicken scratch, interpret some mumbling alien type sound, and like the feeling of tripping on acid then this class is perfect for you. J.J. Tats just does not explain anything, he does not finish a problem. One time i went to the tutors and they had no clue what i was doing--DO NOT TAKE!!!
Oh my goodness. Really nice, but the most incomprehensible man I have ever met: mumbles incessantly, constantly messes up problems, randomly decides to change variables. Only take his class if you already have a background in it because it's the only way you'll survive. All quiz points go toward tests, though, so that's good.
Knows math, does not know how to teach effectively at all. Teaches it like you've known it for years. Completely made me lose all interest in math. You are insane or intellectually suicidal if you take his class.
funny guy, but very incomprehensible. talks to the board, himself, even to the book, but not to the class. expects that you already know EVERYTHING and really doesn't like going over things. avoid if you don't like math or have any trouble with it... HE WILL MAKE YOU HATE MATH
He's a hysterical man but horrific teacher. He rambles on incoherrently and doesn't really help you out if you don't understand. He'll pick a student who typically knows what's going on and ask him if he understands then moves on. Only take him if you can't find another class or are desperate. He does offer extra credit though sparingly.
He doesn't pity fools however.
Although he is difficult to understand at times, if a person listens carefully and pays attention, classes with this professor are enjoyable. As far as grading, he is more than fair. He is more concerned that the student understands the concepts, then with silly mistakes.
He was really nice.
Really nice professor however, you're doomed if you take him. If you're not a genius at math, I suggest don't take him or you'll regret it! Too fast, too much, and too crazy is all I have to say.
Independent Study in Complex Analysis was extremely fun. As an experienced tutor, I understand Dr. T's low scores here: He's very direct. He knows his stuff, and expects his students to as well. More than anything, READ READ READ. The book is your friend. And go to tutors. He's a great teacher, but he just goes a step too fast for most.
Not a hard class if you go and look at the notes. The tests are almost exact replicas of the quizzes. His unapproachable behavior and quick teaching style is most likely the reason some kids hate him.
Teaches quickly, but if you go to class and keep good notes, you'll be fine, as all quizzes and tests are open notes and open book. If you don't put in the effort, however, don't expect any freebies from him.
okay. so i had to take this in order rto be a finance major and it literally is the worse class ever. man never listens. tests are open book but impossible oh yeah and there is an entire test on excel that you have no idea how to do. have fun. class sucks.
one of my harder classes. Extremely fast-paced, minimal reinforcement, and very challenging. But tests are open notes, even though your grade solely depends on midterm, excel exam, and final. Ask questions, and dont ever fall behind: I accepted the challenge, worked hard, and ended up doing well. Make sure you understand evrything outside of class
you know students have that one class in their college career that is the biggest pain in the ass? well this is the one. no structure, no textbook, no reinforcement. good luck.
Maybe I am os was easy. Each test I took the slides and sat down and re read them several times. I did the homework every night and made sure I knew how to get the answer or else I would ask him how to do the problems. To this day I see him in the halls at PC and always stop to say hello. Also he lets you make a cheat sheet to use on the tests sooo
I love him. He's the nicest old man ever and he tells the best jokes. I love going to his class every day and I wish he taught all of my classes. Really. I just love him.
Do yourself a favor and DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is very unclear and just does problems on the board without explaining anything. He wrote the book and it has tons of mistakes. Take a better instructor and actually learn the material.
Dr. Tattersall's class is difficult and his teaching in class can be hard to understand at times. However, if you put the work in and visit him at office hours he is very helpful. He also encourages you to come to his office hours and if you do, he usually clears up any problems that you had in class.
He's an alright teacher. He gives group quizzes to review the material and all tests are open book so if you pay attention it's easy to do well. He's even offered retests on occasion. Definitely take him if you can because with all the review you learn the material. He's very helpful during his office hours as well. Take!
He is super nice and very helpful. If you do the homework and go to his office hours when you need help, you will definitely be fine in this class. He also gives you opportunities to improve your grades if you stumble on one exam. Definitely take him again!
Not a good professor. Yes, he might encourage you to see him if you have questions, but he is unorganized, tests are impossibly difficult, and he is often unclear when he teaches. In high school, I easily had a 91, and thought I'd be able to take this class to boost my overall college GPA but ended up dropping it because it was too difficult.
I took precalc in high school and felt grossly unprepared for this class. I have straight A's in every other class but I'm on the verge of failing this one. He is unhelpful and unclear. Worst professor I've ever taken and entirely unorganized. His tests make no sense and aren nothing like he prepares you for. DO. NOT. TAKE.
worst professor I ever had. Does not teach. Gives basic idea of calc in class and expects you to know all of the applications of the information for the exams. Do not consider taking him .
Worst teacher I've ever had. He does not teach and does not give you any tools or resources to success. He is not a HARD professor, but a BAD professor. I have A's in all my other classes but had to drop this one because I was failing. He just excepts you to know the complex material without teaching it to you. Uses his own textbook, lots of typos.
Worst teacher I have had in my whole student career. Never take this professor because he is very unclear and is no help. Very uncommunicative. Go to his office hours and it WILL NOT help. His tests are impossible. he worst part is that he give NO partial credit!
Really really hard if you're not willing to put in a lot of effort. His brain works way too fast for most peoples, which makes him a bad teacher. He answers any questions you ask so you have to be really aggressive in asking him things & then he'll help. He is nice and wants you to do well, but really difficult
Really nice person, horrible teacher. He either goes into too much detail when explaining a concept or not enough detail. Willing to help if you go to office hours and gives you a chance to make up exams with bad grades but overall his lectures will leave you confused. If math comes easy to you, this class is fine, if not, you will struggle.
Professor Tattersall is a great professor. He moves quick, but is always there to help you if you need it. He is a very fair grader and his class has a clear grading criteria. He offers extra credit and ways to boost your grade throughout the semester. Great teacher, would definitely take again.
Tatts was probably one of my favorite teachers. He is kind of hard to follow in class but is more than willing to help you if you speak up and ask questions, also his office hours are very helpful. He also gives you certain chances to retake tests as well as extra credit is offered almost every week. Overall very nice guy!
Dr. Tattersall is a very caring professor. Although he is older, he is quite funny in class and loves to connect with his students. He gives take home exams and limited homework, I would recommend taking his classes if he is available for sure. One of my favorite professors so far here at PC!
Terrible teacher. Doesnt not care in the least if anyone understands his lecture. Is of lesser help during office hours. Took same class with different teacher next semester, much better.
I know it seems like a lot of people don't like professor Tattersall, but he really is a great though. And sure, you are kind of on your own for some things because he teaches is a weird manner, but this is a good thing because it helps you actually learn it. His exams were pretty hard too, but he does let you use cheat sheets.
Has 4 exams and a final and gives you a study guide or lets you use a cheat sheet for every exam. Horrible teacher. Just starts writing numbers on the board and half the time doesn't even finish the problem. More kids probably dropped this class than stayed in it. Don't take him, his bad rating on here if very much deserved.
If you have never taken calc before do not take this class with professor tattersall because it will be very hard for you. His classes were confusing and very boring, most kids dropped out within the first few weeks. He does allow you to being a cheat sheet to every exam and even to the final which is nice but overall not a very good professor
He is a nice enough man but sometimes I think he forgets he is teaching a class & just writes numbers on the board for himself. Even if you use the book to teach yourself his exam questions are so confusing I didnt even know what they were asking half the time. Most people drop his class so just save yourself some time & take a different prof
Dr. Tattersall is a great man, who is extremely smart, but does not know how to explain the material inside his head. His notes on the board are as disorganized as his lectures, and he cannot explain how to get from A to B. Almost everyone ends up dropping this class because they are failing, including me (and I had an A in calc last semester).
JJ Tattersall is the worst teacher I have ever had and will ever have. I am confident in that statement despite only being a freshman. He has no structure in his class. Even something as simple as writing on the board is low quality. He writes everywhere and everywhere in about font size 12. DO WHATEVER YOU CAN TO NOT TAKE DR. TATTERSALL
Taking his class made me feel like an idiot. The only reason why I managed to make it out with a C was by watching tons of calc youtube videos. His lectures are IMPOSSIBLE to follow and incredibly boring. Your grade is only made up of 3 exams grades and the final. Don't take this prof if you can avoid it. Even if you did well in AP calc AB/BC.
This guy sucks. He does not know how to teach a class. During lecture his notes are unorganized and students have to correct him most of the time. Do anything you can to stay away from this class he's horrible.
PROS: free book, nice person, can skip class CONS: hard class, can't teach, only 4 exams, useless Do not take his class unless you have to. I took it during COVID-19 and did the pass/fail option. thank god I passed.
he is not a very good teacher. I have failed all the tests. do not take him!!
Tattersall is a nice older man who knows calculus very well and is extremely friendly. With this being said, that is all. He is by no means qualified to be a professor as he often struggles getting across his points. He flies through lectures, constantly mis-speaks/ writes, and his power points have many errors making it difficult to retain info.
Dr. Tattersall is not THAT bad. He doesn't know how to teach so you will have to self teach yourself all the material. If you are capable of self teaching, you will do fine in his class. His tests are doable and he tells you exactly what material you need to know. Do the HW and use his power points to study. Also, trust the tutoring center and go!
Dr. Tattersall is a great and sweet man. However, he is by far the worst teacher I've ever had in my life. His style of teaching is by far the worst and all he does is write numbers on the board and expect you to understand how to do it. Pretty much a quiz every Friday and does not care the least for his students. STAY AWAY!!
Professor Tattersall is a nice guy but he is the worst teacher I have ever had. He is incapable of teaching calc, and friends of mine in other classes have had a much easier time getting good grades while everyone I know who has tattersall struggles for even a B. He could not teach any faster, Do not take Tattersall if you want to learn calc.
This man doesn't even know what's going on. When he's going over a problem he gets it wrong himself and the class consists of everyone else correcting him. If you don't already know the material, you're not going to learn it from him so it's basically a self-teaching class. He honestly made me confused the more I listened to him.
Definitely time for Dr Tattersall to retire. He barely knows what is going on and frequently messes up the work on the board. Tests aren't very hard if you got to class.
PLEASE avoid this class at all costs. You won't pass, or if you do it'll tank your gpa. The only way to learn is to teach yourself through the textbook. He makes no sense and it the most disorganized professor ever. He doesn't give partial credit for work on problems and will fail you on everything. for your own sanity, don't take.
I would like to say I'm good at math but listening to him made me confused. Honestly when I would have to go to class for quizzes and he would teach I would tune him out Everyone in class would be correcting him the entire time and his work on the board is impossible to understand.
