This is a very good class, she helps build confidence when doing something scary like public speaking. She gives you interesting topics and a lot of room to make your speech personal. She is very helpful and nice, and she makes her classroom environment very comfortable and friendly. I would recommend her to anyone.

she knows what she wants with her students. grading is kinda hard and it gets even harder as the class goes on. each speech will get be more difficult then the last. test will be hard, cus she doesnt prepare you for it. class was very entertaining tho, oh and shes a hot teacher always a plus.

Great professor! This class can help you present ANYTHING. Students who complained didn't want to work. This is COLLEGE not 2nd grade. Speeches get more difficult as class goes on. If you listen you can learn things about yourself. She is helpful and has a great personality. Test are easy if you read. I plan to take all of her classes. Take her!

I don't know what people r talking about... I just took her this last semester and she was the best professor ever!! Ya u gotta work hard but she rewards it!! Would definitely take her again :) makes a very uninteresting class alot of fun!! I looked forward to going to speech class :)

Had a hard time paying attention in her class because she was VERY hot but overall good class. I hated doing speeches before i took her class, but the whole process gave me allot of confidence and i got a B plus

be prepared to work your butt off on these speeches. i hear stories that other teachers are easier but she has a interesting personality and she helped me a lot. i am kind of going to miss her class

She knows how to weed out the people who are not serious by the end of class. If you seek help she is willing to offer it. A lot of Research, but the class is worth it. She?s consistent with her sarcastic personality.

she is an amazing professor, will keep you in line and keep your interest. She expects alot from students because she knows you could do it. very helpful and you learn to speak effectively and well by end of semester. great professor. dont procrastinate!!!!

Her way of teaching is to shape you in being more effective in how you speak. People complain bc they are lazy. This class is meant to take you out of your comfort zone and to grow as an idividual im taking her class this semester and its my 2nd time for another class. She helps you grow, nonetheless.

must throughly read textbook for finals. Fair & helpful. People complain too much, you basically only have 2 exams (mid-term & final), a research paper and a few presentations. Took her for COMSTD 2 & 72. Speeches were easy, she gave you templates of what she wants. Presentations are easy, she also gave templates. Know your content. EXAMS CURVED!!

This professor DOES HELP her students. You have to be willing to seek out her help. Yes, the tests are a bit hard because all she gives are the chapters to read. Still, you should be doing the reading anyways! She DOESN'T expect perfection for speeches but also pushes your comfort zone. She's funny and you'll leave her class a better speaker!

ComStd 72 is challenging. Requires lots of effort. Does her best to sticks to syllabus. Grades fairly. Half-ass effort not so great grade, big effort A/B grade. Students progress to better speaker at end of term. She wont coddle you, but if you ask for help she will help you. Challenging but very rewarding.

She grades a bit tough, but you just have to be willing to ask her for help and she will definitely help you. All of her random stories help you remember her lectures for the test. She doesn't assign much reading but expects you to know it fairly well when she tests you on it. Overall, it takes effort to get an A in her class.

Had a good time in the class. She made the class lively and her lectures put out some good info.. Take notes, read the chapters that are required. Potential for possible extra credit.. Dont miss class, but you wouldnt want to anyway. Definitely a chili pepper. This was a fun class..

She made me an excellent speaker and now I don't feel any anxiety doing speeches or presentations. Breaks it down for you, extremely helpful if you seek her out. Do what she suggests - it actually does help you improve. She will work with you if you come to her in advance with a problem. Only two written tests, straight from the book.

Miss Alvarez is a great teacher. She teaches you how to speak in front of a crowd and how to do it professionally. Don't get me wrong she is not easy by far, but she knows her stuff and if you listen to her feedback you will become a better speaker. Plus she is very easy on the eyes which help's to pay attention also.

Not an easy class you have to work and put in the effort. As long as you do that she will grade you fairly. Don't slack off or procrastinate you'll get stressed. If you work hard she rewards it. She also has a funny/dirty sense of humor which makes you remember stuff.

I'm not going to say the class was easy but it was very rewarding. She grades appropriately I thought. She did give extra too which was great. I would take her again. She kept class interesting

Coach was great! Very hard to earn an A, she makes you work for it, but she gives solid feedback and is there to help! I did a hybrid class, but I think it would've been better to do a reg. course. If she believes in you, she will push you and support you! You get what you give! Don't take if you're a slacker student.

Shes passionate about the subject being taught. Naturally someone who pursues their passion will be good at it.

One of the best instructors Ive taken and Ive taken classes for two years. She really challenges you and pushes you to your full potential and I was surprised how much I got out of the class. Great teaching style! For this course I did not know what to expect and I was relieved that the lectures were so informative and interesting and funny.

Ive taken professor Alvarez for two courses and I love her teaching style. Really good professor!!! I love that she saves us money on textbooks. For one of my classes she did not have the textbook and posted all the reading stuff online. For the other she has a custom textbook and its affordable. She really helped me throughout the semester.

Took her over the summer for a hybrid class. YOU LEARN. You really really learn! I get shy often and she gave me feedback that was not sugar coated and she worked with me to improve. Has two exams based on the book, MC not hard just read! 3 maybe 4 presentations. Online class was half of it and it wasn't much either. Brings life to the room!

This is one of the most challenging classes I have taken and I have learned so much from her. Shes very intelligent and really makes you think. Love the way she lectures and made something I thought would be harder easier to understand.

As much as I hated this class due to public speaking and my anxiety, she really helped me be a strong public speaker. Shes pretty tough and tells you whats bad about your speaking, but on my final speech I felt confident and wasnt That nervous anymore. I feel better about presentations, I still hate them but I can do it now.

Professor Alvarez is an amazing instructor and incredibly smart!!! She has helped me with my debates and has given me the best feedback to make my cases stronger. So helpful! She's tough, but Ive learned more in her class than many of the courses I have taken.

Love, love Dr. Alvarez!!!!! I was scare of death of this class but she makes a hard subject understandable and I was surprised by how much I learned. I went to her to help me with my cases and she helped me so much. The way she thinks is amazing!! She even helped me with another class where I had to put arguments together to do a presentation.

IDK about those negative reviews, I took Professor Jo Alvarez 2 x in my undergrad Comm Studies courses & she is absolutely one of Chaffey Colleges's Best Professors! She is very fair, makes you talk, think, & guides collaborative projects. I was fortunate enough to be selected in her 1st CC Student Interpersonal Showcase honoring Military Vets.
