McLendon doesn't provide helpful critique on written assignments, leaving you wondering why you were marked down. Class assignments are only difficult in that instructions are unclear. 20 minutes of class was once spent answering questions about an assignment to respond to Twitter "tweets." He comes off as pretentious, but isn't too bad otherwise.
Joe was probably my favorite teacher this term. He's super helpful, incredibly engaging, and very relatable. Class was hardly ever boring or snorefest, and he was incredibly open-minded.
This is the professor to take if you want an exceptional experience. Goes out of his way to make the class seem less like a lecture, and more like a group learning experience. Allows students to express themselves and their opinions, as well as personalize projects, while still keeping students focused.
Prof. Joe was amazing. He is passionate about this class and life. If you are looking for a class to sail through, choose another. If you are open and willing to share yourself and opinion, look no further. I highly recommend!!
Incredible class, incredible professor. This class has changed my life.
BEST TEACHER EVER. No matter what major you're going for, required class or not, everyone should take and experience this class.
Easily the best class I've ever taken. Sad Joe doesn't teach the next level up because he's the professor you want to teach you in every class.
I enjoyed every minute of class. Professor Joe is truly passionate about what he teaches. I took this class not knowing what to expect and now feel like a whole different person because of the knowledge and insight I received. I HIGHLY recommend this class!
Prof. Joe is awesome! Has a "Dead Poets Society" vibe to the class, and I mean that in the best way possible. I learned a ton about the world around me, and more importantly myself. I had a lot of appreciation for the way that Prof Joe showed us how math, science, and art contribute to every aspect of our society.
He likes to lock the door for awkward silent moments at the start of class(Don't be late). Two cultural experience papers and capstone essay with unclear criteria. Your final is a presentation on yourself. I would not recommend taking his class as an elective if you have other options, also don't take his class unless you're a social science major.
Prof. Joe is such an awesome guy and a great professor. He gets very excited about the content he teaches, which shows in how he inspires his students. He gives great feedback and is always willing to help. He is also very honest and uses life experience and personal stories, adding merit to the content he teaches.
This professor is something that could change your whole life. His intelligence is limitless, with constant educational words coming from his mouth. Everything about the class was enjoyable aside from the fact that some peers dropped the class. He is a professor that does not believe in tests to determine your grade but your response to the class.
I REALLY enjoyed this class! Joe is a wonderful teacher that inspires and educates you. I really cannot gush enough about this class! Take any and all classes by him because he will change your life. I am so happy that I took this class. There are assignments, but they are worthwhile and enjoyable. Textbook share with someone in class! Cool.
I would highly recommend taking any hum class with Joe, he's an amazing teacher and by far my favorite. He's one of those professors that tells you how it is and shows how important it is to show up and put technology away. Walked into his class spring term 2016 not knowing what I had gotten myself into, fell asleep a few times but wasn't personal.
Professor McLendon is awesome. He is very passionate about the subject he teaches. he HIGHLY respects his students, and helps them to learn and to be better people. Everyone must take this class!
The most amazing professor I have ever had. So caring, critical, and respectful. Each week was so much fun. There is no way you could not like this professor.
He's incredibly energetic and passionate about what he teaches. He makes every class interesting and exciting. The assignments aren't super clear, but it gives you a lot of freedom to run with it. There aren't any tests but there are a lot of writing assignments.
A new generation, respectable teacher that is ready to show you the world, and how to extract meaning from it.
I am a young senior citizen, a college graduate, and I have never experienced the pure joy of attending a class. This is a professor who is passionate about his work, his subject and his students. You will feel wonderful in this class, learn so much, and want to sign up for more of his classes
Prof Joe is supportive, funny and very intelligent. I wish he was teaching more classes at PCC. He doesn't tell you when the papers are due because it is on the syllabus so that can be tricky but if you turn it in on time he is a very fair grader. He expects you to be adults but in return he shares the classroom with you. Participation is welcome.
Joe was great. Highly thoughtful and intelligent person. His class was a pleasure to take. Assignments felt kind of broad, but not bad at all. Be expected to participate. It certainly helps to let your guard down a bit and engage with the class. Highly recommend!
Prof Joe is one of the best professors I've ever had. He's really caring and is very passionate about his job/subject. His class is super engaging and interesting. He's very respectful of people from all walks of life and very approachable. I highly recommend taking a class with him!!
I don't think you,ll find another Prof that will genuinely care about his students. He creates a sense of community in his classes. enthusiastic about his content and goes the extra mile to make sure his student are able to take something important from his course. He will change the way you look at everything
Prof Joes passion for the subject and for his students success will inspire you. Go to class with an open mind and you will be enlightened. He expects his students to step out of their comfort zone and experience the wide variety of cultural experiences in Portland. His assignments are well structured and the deadlines are clear. Take his class!
This is my third class I've taken with Joe. Race and racism was definitely a harder course compared to his other classes. Not difficult when it comes to the assignments but hard with the material being taught. This class made me mentally and emotionally exhausted but worth taking. Don't pass up this course.
Never pass up a class with Pro Joe! He's insightful and open minded, don't be afraid if you go into class thinking one thing and come out thinking another. No matter what course you take with him you will be changed! It's not so much the material but the delivery and Professor Joe does an amazing job. He's comparable to the cool uncle.
Inspiring and full of energy. Awesome dude, great class structure, and a passion for what he does. Not more you can ask for from a professor? Take his class if you have the opportunity. There's a reason his sections fill up quickly.
Prof Joe is amazing. Humanities was just something I was taking because it was available and I had to drop different class. This was the best thing that could have happened. I learned so much about the world and myself. He definitely cares and wants you to succeed. He is a wonderful person don't, hesitate take his class.
Mclendon was a joy to have as a professor. They do their best at keeping a balanced discussion in every class and encourage all forms of "healthy" conversations. Respects and listens to students arguments and opinions, while challenging them to think beyond or in different aspects. I really enjoyed this professor and recommend learning from them.
i think joe is amazing he is probley the best teacher ive had, he makes class fun and involves every body
Professor Joe has been one of the best instructors I have taken. He knows his stuff, and he cares about us as students. He is very passionate about what he teaches and the way that he teaches is very unique. I would definitely recommend Prof. Joe to anybody.
Prof. Joe is an awesome teacher. He respects his students as equals to himself and believes he can learn from them too. He is very open minded and willing to discuss. This class is very interesting and I would highly recommend.
Joe is one of the best profs Iv had, hes really clear on what needs to get done. His lectures are mind blowing. I highly recommend !!!!
Prof. Joe will set you up for success as a student and as a person. His course has structure, yes, but you will not get more engaged and truly genuine teacher. I give my highest recommendation possible for the guy. Just be on time.
Prof. Joe is such a good professor, he really opens your mind about certain thing and really gets you thinking about everything in life. His class is a really fun class and you never do the same thing in class. I would recommendation to take this class you wont be disappointed with the class. He is very clear on every assignment he gives out.
He is an awesome teacher who brings so much energy onto the classes that he is in. His personal stories are often so interesting. I always left the class learning something new.
Prof. Joe was awesome. I have taken three classes with him and every time I had a class with him I learned something new. His lectures aren't boring, they actually relate to your personal life very well. There is quite a bit of reading and essays but you will feel cared for and respected with this teacher.
Prof. Joe is easily the best teacher I've ever had, he cares for all of his students and he teaches the class in a way that makes it fun and interesting. Every day I was excited to come to class and learn something new and life-altering. The homework mostly consists of essays, which are fairly easy and as long as you do the work you will pass.
Joe is a fantastic professor--funny and engaging. You have to show up to class--more than two absences and your grade drops. But class time is very interesting, so you won't want to miss it anyway. One presentation, lots of active participation--a whole lot of fun! No tests or quizzes, just papers.
Joe is an inspiring, young professor who, despite his appearance, has much to offer in guiding a class on race and racism. The class's workload was moderately heavy, but the class discussions were great prompts for the term papers. Utilize the writing center if scholarly writing doesn't come easily to you. If you care to, you'll pass.
He's such a nice teacher!!! He gets super excited about topics and geeks out. We only have two papers to write, one presentation at the end of the term, and no quizzes or hw. He likes to do a lot of group work and I would suggest getting to know your peers because the ending presentation is in front of them so get to know them!
Okay, let me be real. Joe is a great wacky teacher with a lot of passion. BUT he's really full of himself. His papers are graded entirely too tough for an entry-level course and good luck reading his handwriting. Again, great teacher but if you're looking for an easy A, cant really get one here.
Prof. Joe is by far one of the professors I've had. He made a positive difference in my life frfr. I joined this course based on ratemyprofessor. I don't regret nothing. JOIN HIS CLASS!
The man is an angry feminist. The man said hed never been called that so Im obliging him (hereallyis). On a more serious note, Ive taken him before and he was a 5/5 awesome teacher, I dont know if its just stuff going on this term but hes been pretty damn pissy since the third week. May be due to infant related sleep deprivation, dont know.
Amazing professor! Makes the class fun and engaging. Always willing to help you out and has a great sense of humor. His papers arent hard if you pay attention in class. Will take another class with him. Highly recommend him.
Amazing teacher, class is never boring there's always something new and fun to learn about. Lectures are actually nice and NOT boring. Essays are easy if you pay attention and manage time to do them. Very inspiring, woke (like he would say "barely waking up"), feminist, and chillest dude.
Prof. Joe is the best. If you can walk in to his classes open minded, you will love him. Take advantage of participation time in his class, you'll thank him later. If you're taking HUM100, I kid you not... FOLLOW HIM! Turn in your work ontime, participate, and you'll love him.
Joe is really great. Take HUM 203 if you get the chance, the topic itself is fascinating. He makes class time super engaging. There are a lot of papers, but no tests. This class had two presentations as well--one group, one single. It was work-heavy, but well worth it. I highly recommend Joe and this class.
Holy wow. The best professor I have had so far. I learned more in his HUM100 class than I ever have in any of my high school classes. He really cares for each of his students, and is very #woke. The essays were all super fun to write and I felt that I was really able to express myself. More than likely gonna take another one of his classes!
One of the best classes I've ever taken - life changing and challenging in the most positive sense. Joe will challenge your presuppositions while still maintaining respect and openness in class activities and discussions. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
This was the most positive learning experience I have had in my undergrad career. I have never had the privilege of having such a passionate and invested professor. I originally took this class as a GPA pad to help with grad school admissions, but ended up learning more than I could have hoped, mostly about myself. You'd be lucky to learn from them
He is a great professor! He is very personable and gives great feedback on papers. It's not a light course, he talks about heavy subjects and the only homework he assigns are papers. You do need the textbook to pass this class.
He gives you the chance to re-discover yourself, and it is entirely up to you to take it or not. You can easily pass the class without putting that much thought to it, but I think it would have been a great waste for you to do so.
Prof. Joe's classes are really engaging. I am taking Hum202 and it is eye-opening. Notes are not necessary because no tests, but there are a few papers that require evidence from the text and lecture. Joe gives good feedback, but his handwriting is hard to read. He does not remind you about due dates, so keep the syllabus handy! Overall great prof.
Professor Joe likes to be called just that. He's pretty easy as long as you're willing to read the text. Even then, the class is simple. He even suggests renting the book because you'll just be using it as a reference for your papers and to further understand the concepts you go over in class. I definitely recommend taking any of his classes.
Prof Joe is responsive to student input and feedback. Class is organized around group discussion. Somewhat lecture heavy, but mostly discussion-based. Lots of writing and reading, 2 presentations, 3 short essays, one big essay. Participation matters, but is understanding of emergencies, illness, or sudden absences (unless something is due).
Prof Joe opened my eyes to how fun college courses can be and I am so grateful for the experience. I would take his class over any professors any day.
I genuinely mean it when I say that Prof Joe is passionate about his job. He absolutely loves what he does & it makes the class way more exciting, especially since mine was 3 hours long. He does give a few long papers and a presentation or two but it may have felt like a lot since I took him during an 8-week term. You won't regret it though! 10/10
Joe is genuinely one of the best educators Ive ever had. He is so passionate about the subject matters, and is clearly very educated on them. He makes learning about anything fun and interesting. I highly recommend taking any class with Joe!
a literal mind expanding adventure in the context of the classroom. ruined all future classes for me.
One word: Revolutionary. Loved every second.
Joe McLendon is one of my all time favorite professors here at PCC! I have taken his HUM 100, 202, 214 and soon to be taking his 203 class. Joe reaches and impacts students like no other, he brings out the best in you and wants YOU to critically think about the real world issues that affect humans today. Please take this class!
I was sorely misled! Ive always wanted to take a humanities course & the ratings made me think this class would be transformative. Far from it! Unless youd like to be a self doubting, anxious, sopping mess! An opportunity to be pretentious and haughty was hardly ever passed up by this Prof! I felt condescended to at every turn! Dont! Stop! Run!
I absolutely loved this class and Joe! He is so knowledgeable about everything, I seriously wondered all the time how he could remember so much info. Not only that, but he makes every single person in the room feel welcome and heard. The workload is beyond doable, 1 chapter of a non-textbook/week + 2-3 short papers + 1 project about yourself.
Joe is very respectable and kind. They provide a safe space for everyone including LGBTIAQ+ individuals. Joe uses neutral pronouns (they/them/their) unless otherwise told by student. Joe delivers the material in an engaging and captivating way. And is grading on a binary during classes being online because of COVID and would like to continue that.
The only reason I gave a 3 on difficulty is because his assignments are abstract. He's not going to give you a lot of criteria and "boxes to check" on assignments. For example: I was assigned a paper and the prompt was "Define Beauty." Just go off of your own experiences and tie them into music, art, and nature and you'll do great. Trust yourself.
Professor Joe really knows his stuff, is very knowledgable about a variety of things. His lectures were very fun to be a part of and always made me think, true his assignments are abstract but because he wants you to put in work and show it. He will give you the grade you deserve, PARTICIPATE:)
Joe doesn't give out quizzes or tests because he feels that that forces students to try and memorize things instead of truly learning them. So yeah he's amazing. When I had him, he wouldn't record his lectures though so if you're into watching lectures after class ends, you can't with him.
I love Joe McLendon! He is so sweet and super fun to be in class with. He throws a lot of information at you in one sitting, but all of it is interesting and engaging. He really cares about the grades and well-being of his students; he wants you to pass! There's a big focus on class involvement, but the work is easy. I highly recommend him!
Professor is clear about the assignments that will be completed through out the term and has a clear greading criteria. Participation is mandatory and attendance.
I loved this class! Joe was very strict with late work, in fact they do not accept anything past the initial due date. But all assignments/papers/projects are organized and clearly stated in syllabus so you won't be caught off guard, and you can be prepared. They were awkward during lectures but in the best way, never a dull moment!
I have never had a teacher more caring about his students in any college course I've ever taken, either in person or online . very understanding and flexible of your living situation and is lenient of late work for this. an absolutely fantastic professor that loves his job and the students he teaches.
Joe has been one of my most memorable professors so far. He has a clear vibrancy and zest for what he does that I found a bit contagious. I would always dread doing a zoom session, but once in his, I found myself engaged and happy to be there. Grading is done on the binary, so it's really hard to do poorly in this class. Absolutely recommend him!
Joe was an awesome professor! They are very clear about class expectations from day one, super personable, and always there to help if you need it. kind of face paced survey course, wont spend too long on each topic in class. We had two weekly discussion posts, two 3-5 page term papers, and one final project. No late work, but a very easy grader!
You can tell he genuinely cares. He is understanding, & he doesn't give random quizzes or tests, just discussions (weekly), projects (1), & essays (2). The classwork itself is easy, but the topics of discussion etc. tend to be a bit vulnerable, which may make it hard for some. Overall, interesting, engaging class that changed my outlook a bit.
Joe is one of my favorite professors and I have been lucky enough to take two of his classes. He grades mostly on participation and there are no tests through out the term, just papers/projects. Because of this you really get to invest in the material and dive into great discussions with him and classmates. This and HUM101 by him are a must take.
Prof Joe is so very very human. He's awkward and funny and is amazing at talking in a way that makes you feel comfortable. In zoom classes, there are a lot of breakout rooms, but Joe does such a good job at building a community that they're actually fun.
Joe is a great prof and I really enjoyed their class! They are a skeptic in the best possible way and really helped open my eyes to the tech of the future. Joe can be a bit pessimistic but if we're having a hard time with the material they're always there for us if we need it. Some of the content of this class weighs pretty heavy but that's good.
Joe is a very passionate and engaging Professor. The course material is, by design, a personal exploration into the aspects of being human and deriving meaning from that humanity. With that said, the more willing you are for introspection the more rewarding this class will be. Truly a wonderful individual, would grab drinks with him.
I took his class 100 and 202, it was so eye-opening as well as easy. Easy in the sense, you show up and communicate with classmates. He focuses on learning rather than your grade. By doing so you actually learn and by doing so get a good grade for thinking outside the box.
Joe is a wonderful human being! They are very passionate about all topics covered in this intro class. The lectures sometimes went all over the place, Joe tends to go on tangents sometimes. It was always related to the topic being discussed but I noticed a lot of the students weren't very engaged because of this. Do the work and get an A.
Joe was my favorite professor of my college experience and I wish I could have taken more courses with them. I took their Hum100 course and their Hum203 course. These courses are rather introspective and can be rather challenging. They will meet you where you are, expect you get out what you put into this class. Joe is awesome, take their courses!!
They are an amazing and insightful teacher who genuinely cares about the students and the work. They do their best to be accommodating to whatever needs you may need. I got sick and asked for an extension on some work and was granted it. TAKE THEIR CLASSES! They will help you learn to be a more ethical human in these most unethical times.
Joe has no where to see your whole grade, so it makes it difficult to what it is. They are good at not responding to emails, and will seem to straight up ignore you when you are sending these emails. Doesn’t answer questions directly. They say you missed class when you didn’t, but they wouldn’t know that because he ignores emails. Thanks Joe!
I loved the class, you have weekly discussions, two essays, and a final presentation. Grading is straightforward, the workload is very manageable. Joe is very likable and you will be discussing very relevant concepts. This course will make you think deeply about life. I highly recommend any of their courses.
Joe is by far one of the best professors I have ever had. HUM 203 was such an interesting and fun class to take, and Joe was a major part of that. Their grading method is fantastic, I have never received kinder feedback, and I've never been so genuinely sad to have a class end. I will recommend Joe to everyone looking to take a humanities course.
Fantastically relatable & considerate in their lectures, feedback and leadership. Very funny, too!
Very interesting lectures. My class was a hybrid model with 2 discussion posts per week to respond to and one in person meeting, which worked pretty well. Late work is allowed besides the papers which are marked on a binary (in on time = full points). Material is conveyed clearly and supplementary materials are used well.
Jo was an amazing professor. Not a single minute of class time felt like it was getting wasted and I actually put my mind to work in order to understand the concepts discussed. The assignments were interesting and connected to the material perfectly. Couldn't have asked for a better class or for a better professor. Take your HUM 100 class with Jo!
"The class was extremely disorganized. We consistently did not cover the assigned material, and instead of lecturing, the instructor had us work on group projects for 30-40 minutes. This was a complete waste of time and a disservice to the students, as we are paying for the instructor to teach us, not for us to teach each other."
Jo is very careful about including everyone. There is a lot of participation between discussion questions and responding to your peers, but other than that, the class is pretty simple and straightforward. I managed to complete all the work due in the class either the morning it was due, or the night before (but mostly the morning it was due).
Joe is a great prof, only thing worth mentioning for newer students is, be aware that participation is pretty much essential to your success in the class.
Don't listen to anybody saying Jo's lectures get off-topic, or that they ramble. Jo's lectures are very entertaining and Jo is very insightful! The only warning is that they don't accept any late work, and is pretty strict on that, but that is very well communicated and you are given PLENTY of time. Highly recommend! So nice!
This class was a lot of fun to take!
He was OK. Kind of rude or condescending at times to other students, I wasn't a fan of that. He also claims you will get full credit for assignments if you follow the guidelines but will mark you down points while only giving positive feedback/ no feedback on where you lost points. That was confusing and frustrating.
Had a awful experience with this dude has a nasty attitude and he needs to be checked
It was really obvious from the beginning; Jo cares a lot about what they're teaching and helping students understand the material. Really easy grader, but only gives positive feedback on assignments. Also was always available and excited to talk after class or at another scheduled time about class content.
Jo is funny, kind, interesting. HUM100 was decently easy. Attend zoom 1x per week, 2 weekly discussion posts + 2 peer replies, 2 papers, 1 final project. In zoom Jo rambles, but it is enjoyable.
You can tell that Jo loves teaching! Assignments/discussions were to the betterment of students and didn't rely on normal academic grading structures; so the class promoted learning and discussion more than 'getting a good grade'. Easy to talk reach outside of class, understanding of circumstances, and helps you understand class expectations.
Great at lectures, imparting wisdom/knowledge, & helping you really understand, not just for homework. Doesn't try to force opinions. Not flexible regarding grades. I failed the class from A- to D because he wouldn't let me resubmit my final project when the file was corrupt. Jaded? Maybe, but I still recommend him. Book as text -- life changing.
I think Jo is really awesome. They show that they care for the class, theres respect, and clear communication. Jo created a welcoming and safe class environment. Each weekly material was well taught and was engaging. I felt that the amount of homework was fair and very doable even with a busy life schedule.
Jo was an amazing instructor. I felt respected and any questions that were asked were never left unanswered. They explained things in a way I understood very well and I recommend anyone that wants to take HUM100 to take it with Jo!
As a neurodivergent & queer person, I always felt Wrong and Obnoxious for participating sincerely in classrooms. But Jo invites it! Enthusiastic, honest, authentic, & bright even when subject matter was intense/demoralizing. Assignments were manageable & personal, though the final project was rough. If I could, I'd take more of their classes.
Professor Jo is engaging and passionate about the material. The class is manageable with interesting assignments. Definitely take advantage of office hours - they're super helpful! And don't forget to use Unstuck ai for efficient study prep.
I've had the wonderful privilege of working with Joe for four terms in a row. Taking these classes has made me much more optimistic about the world and more confident in myself. They are a professor who understands and has lots to share. Humanities is an underrated course that needs to be taught, and Joe does it wonderfully.
Professor Jo is a fabulous, caring teacher. He spends the time to explain things, he mixes up lectures with things like discussion forums, documentaries, TED talks, and music. The one book he required was paperback and easily accessible. He has given me insight into the Humanities and I look forward to taking more classes with him.
Intelligent and thought provoking.
Jo makes lectures interesting, and the homework due each week is realistic and easily manageable if you set aside time to work on the material. I really enjoyed taking this class!
Prof sets the students up to succeed, the class was caring, deep/profound and fun. The text can be obtained affordably (free-$11) There is a lot of information but this Prof does it in ways that makes you look forward to class and you know you will carry these concepts and theories with you through the rest of your life if you apply yourself.
Prof. Jo is one of the most genuine and caring instructors I've had at PCC. His class makes you think deeply about yourself, your experiences, and what meaning looks like in your life. The feedback he gives is honest and thoughtful, and you can tell he really wants his students to grow. If you put effort into the class, you'll get a lot back.
