stay away from! not helpful, rude, and extremely picky. Unnecessary readings required every class. You will NOT make a A!!!
Dr. Arbery can come across as opinionated, but she is a terrific teacher. She grades hard, but as long as you put in a decent amount of effort you'll be fine. Contrary to the other review on here, I got an A.
rude, unhelpful, unnecessarily picky quizzes, readings, and grading. would not recommend at all...
If you're an English or literature buff, go for it. But if you're like most people, who appreciate some humor and enjoy learning things that are pertinent to life outside English class, then I wouldn't recommend her. I did the readings, went to class, participated, did my work, and still got ripped apart. Pretty nice lady but a boringhard class.
I walked out of her class with an A. Her quizzes are very detailed oriented but definitely doable, always two extra credit questions on them. She is very helpful if you just take the time to email her questions. She gives you the feedback you need at conferences. Not a hard grader if you take her comments. Definitely, helps become a better writer.
Arbery is a tough teacher. Her quizzes are very detail oriented to read closely. If you read, participate, and make adjustments to papers according to what she says in conferences, you should have no problems getting an A.
Dr. Arbery is an okay teacher but not a very nice person at all. She gives very tough quizzes that are extremely detailed. She also assigns way more work than any other of the Hilltop New Century Scholars DISC teachers do. She grades very harshly and is rude when you ask her for help. The final grade she puts on Blackboard is also not accurate
nice person, wants to help.
Definitely wouldn't take again. 95% of the kids that take her for 1312, don't take her for 1313. Usually the 5% has to take her because of scheduling conflicts. There's a reason for that......
Hard grader. Very boring subject matter. Tough quizzes.
Dr. Arbery is a tough teacher. If you are going into her class with average writing skills you have two options: do or die. I walked out of her class with an A, but I had to fight for it. She specifically told my class that about 1 or 2 people per class will receive an A. Read whenever she assigns something. She is hard but you gain a lot from her.
Dr. Arbery is very helpful! She gives excellent feedback on essays and as long as you do the work and listen to her feedback you'll be fine. She does give a quiz almost every week that there is reading but you do not have to answer all the quiz questions. Very helpful.
Be prepared for reading or some type of homework every night. She also gives quizzes on some of the readings, but doesn't tell you when. She is a very hard grader and participation in class is very necessary.
I believe that she means well however, she is insanely fast and brushes over information that is important. Reading everytime you have class if not more. She is extremely unclear on directions for papers and assignments and leaves interpretation up to the students. if you don't meet her interpretation of the assignment she destroys your grade.
This class was one of the most difficult and rewarding courses I have taken. In class discussions are in depth involved, and relate directly to essay prompts. She is a tough grader on essays, but extremely willing to help. If you want to improve your writing and are willing to work for it, I would highly recommend Professor Arbery.
Dr Arbery is one of the most brilliant people I've come across. Her expectations are high, and she pushes you much further than you'd imagine. I started this class with a B- on my first paper, but I truly improved using her feedback. I know for a fact that I walked out of her class as a much better writer, but you have to work to make that A.
Dr. Arbery is a great professor, but she makes you work for it. Don't be surprised if your friends with other professors receive A+s on all their papers with no effort while you spend hours trying to make your paper a B. That being said, I think her class is worth it. Her lectures are extremely interesting and she will make you a better writer.
Alright, as you read the comments for Dr. Arbery, watch the trends. Her "bad" reputation is 98% due to people used to HS Gym/English teachers who don't care about their class and don't make their students work. Dr. Arbery is the exact opposite. She is intelligent and cares for her student's knowledge. She will make you work but you will learn.
She OWNS you. If you forget to put your citations in alphabetical order in your works cited page, you will immediately regret being born. She is the Gordon Ramsay of DISC 1313. If you DARE present her with anything less than perfection, she will immediately slice your confidence down to the ground where it belongs. Very nice lady otherwise.
An amazing teacher who genuinely cares about her students and subject matter. She's possibly the toughest grader I've ever worked with, but her feedback is clear and helpful and I've improved so much as a writer because of it. All the negative reviews here are from people unwilling to work or learn. If you love learning though, she's great.
I was able to get by with an A- with minimal effort. Do the readings and participate in class. She isn't too tough of an essay grader in my opinion.
Take a different DISC 1313 class, that's the bottom line. She's incredibly hard, and even meeting with her most of the time will not help your grade. I urge you to consider someone else, because I've worked extremely hard just to get a B. Don't take her.
Someone here said "bottom line, just don't take her class." if you care about your GPA, heed those words. Just don't take her class. Take another DISC, there are plenty others. Taking her class was the biggest academic mistake I've made. her lectures DO NOT help with anything. very intolerant, narrow minded grader. just take another professor.
She is not helpful at all, a narrow minded grader, and kind of rude. I took many steps to try to meet with her and improve my writing, but she only cut down my grade. I considered myself I pretty good writer, but she cut down any confidence I had in my abilities. She slashed my final grade with little feedback. TAKE A DIFFERENT TEACHER.
Dr. Arbery's class was unlike other english courses I've taken, and I earned an Associate's degree. First half of the semester has SO MUCH READING, weekly writing quizzes and 3 essays. Second half of the semester is a research paper broken into multiple parts. Each essay graded on its own merit with no "good job, you've improved since last time!".
Dr. Arbery will make you a better writer. Her classes are usually interesting, and she offers lots of writing help. She will make you work extremely hard for your grade.
Signed up for Artificial Intelligence, but what I actually got was loads of philosophy and religion. 50 pages of nonsense to read for each class, weekly quiz, and essays that she grades without mercy. The more advice from her I took, the lower the grade she gave me. Misery at its finest. Not a single person in my class earned an A.
All Arbery ever wants to talk about is sex. Every discussion somehow leads to that topic, and you have to write your papers on that if you want to get an A. Also, you can go to her office hours multiple times, do everything she recommends, and still get a C on a paper. Make sure you follow MLA perfectly; she will take off points for 1 mistake.
Very compelling lectures. Always willing to help outside of class. Participation is crucial in getting acclimated to the class style. She is very enthusiastic and loves discussions so be prepared to talk
Arbery is a tough grader. Her essays have an average of a B- and a high of a A-. The class is insightful, but if you aren't a humanities major or GPA is of any importance to you, avoid her for DISC. You'll work harder but get a lower grade because of her harsh grading relative to other professors and the fact that essays are 70% of your final grade
Dr. Arbery genuinely cares about her students. Honors DISC is hard, but she gives you every opportunity to do well. Quizzes are reading-based, so you must read. She holds extra office hours and is always responsive via email. She pushes you to become a better writer and gives plenty of help along the way. Prepare to work hard and get good.
Dr. Arbery genuinely wants to see her students improve and succeed. She is extremely accessible and gives solid feedback during office hours. While she is a bit of a tough grader, participating in class can bring your grade up. Her quizzes are easy if you do the reading. She is very open to new perspectives and loves to learn from her students.
I think English is the subject that I despise the most and coming into this class I was very nervous, but somehow she made me enjoy her class and this subject, which is rare for a teacher to do. She expects you to try in her class, but all teachers do. As long as you put effort in and participate, you will do great in this class.
I took Arbery's class for both DISC 2305 and 2306, and loved her class. I like English a lot, so that may of contributed, but I always felt that if you went to her and asked, she would always be extremely helpful. Every time I saw her, she made my papers a lot stronger. You have to work hard on your essays, but if you do, you'll be good.
Excellent professor. Great curriculum this semester.. Very accessible out of class. Will improve your writing. If you put the work in, you will probably make a B+ or better, easier said than done though. Grading scale is skewed: a paper with few negative comments can still get you a B. Work your butt off and you won't regret taking Dr. Arbery.
Arbery gives engaging lectures, but youre expected to think critically & always give 100% effort. She can be a tough grader, but if you put in the time & ask for her feedback, she will help you & you can definitely get As. Everyone saying shes too hard either cant write, cant take criticism, or doesnt work hard. 10/10, made me a better writer.
DISC 2306: Arbery is a tough prof. She expects you to always be on top of things and assigns large amounts of reading a week. She truly is an amazing prof and is extremely knowledgable about the topics. She WILL make you a better writer. The class is pretty strict and hard but is worth the growth you will have. The best 2306 prof for edu quality
DISC 2306: Arbery has a deserved reputation as the most challenging Honors DISC professor, but that doesn't mean you should avoid her at all. Go in willing to do the reading and give 100% effort on the essays, and your writing will improve dramatically.
Dr. Arbery will transform your writing and is an amazing professor. While there is a decent amount of reading and weekly quizzes, the discussions are very entertaining and the class isn't hard as long as you do the assigned readings. My writing has improved so much and I am so glad that I took her for both semesters of honors DISC!!
Everyone says Prof. Arbery is the hardest honors DISC teacher, but her class really isn't bad. She has specific ways she wants you to write, but she lays it out clearly and if you just follow her instructions, you'll be fine on the papers. Lectures are interesting and engaging, and she genuinely wants her students to learn. Amazing person & prof.
Taking Arbery freshman year will set you so, so far ahead of your peers. Everyone knows she's the best/hardest DISC prof but don't let that scare you. She expects a lot from you, so if you're taking her, don't overload yourself with a crazy schedule. Also go to class and don't forget your books or to print the reading bc she will lower your grade.
There is a lot of reading and writing in this honors class but that should be expected since this is WRTR. She grades kind of hard but you will be fine if you know how to write in active voice and have good grammar. There is hardly anything due during class periods, just the occasional announced quiz and one in class essay.
don't take dr. arbery. If you go to office hours with your rough draft she'll barely give you any corrections, so you'll think she likes your work, then you get a low B on it. She's literally impossible to please no matter how hard you try and extremely rude. If you're a straight A student like me, don't take her class because you will get a B.
Good luck getting above a B. She is a TOUGH grader. I'm taking Ivie this year and getting straight A's on papers I BS but I was lucky to get a B+ on Arbery's papers. She takes the class wayyy too seriously and it's kinda interesting but I'd prefer to get A's. She's also very pushy about participation
Dr. Arbery is an incredible professor, but she is TOUGH. You really have to work for the A. However, she gives amazing feedback and you should absolutely schedule office hours to hear everything that she has to say about your work. There is a lot of reading in this class! A lot. YOU GET OUT WHAT YOU PUT IN!!!
I love Arbery! Discussion heavy class, be sure to do readings and take notes for the essays. Had meetings to help essays before final due date, very helpful. Complex essay topics, hard grader. Very engaging in class, helpful outside of class. All assignments are free-response, analysis heavy, evidence required--read the readings!! Overall, great!
These reviews make Dr. Arbery seem much more intimidating than she actually is. She is such a caring teacher that genuinely wants you to succeed! T here is a lot of work, but it's nothing undoable and you really do learn a lot. Make sure you participate in the discussions! She's very understanding if you communicate with her. GO TO OFFICE HOURS!!!!
I took Dr. Arbery for her UHP 3303 course and loved it. She challenges you intellectually and makes you a much better writer. She has clear expectations, and gives incredibly detailed feedback. She is also accessible outside of class. She is fairly tough, but lays her expectations out clearly. With a little work, an A is certainly manageable.
Tough grader, but honestly a nice lady. Lots of grades come from simply participating and doing the reading. My writing improved a lot in the semester I took her. She is eager to help you improve.
Professor Arbery taught me a lot and the discussions were enlightening. The class itself was difficult. She is a tough grader and expects a lot from essays. She also makes you buy physical copies of all the texts and there's no technology allowed.
Joan is a classic Honors Teacher. There is a negative stigma around her class, but she just wants hard work and has high expectations. There are 3-4 papers, readings, and discussions. She grades participation, which helps boost your grade if you contribute once a class. You could skim the readings and get by in class, but you need quality writing.
Class is mainly in-class discussion of assigned texts (1 full novel, multiple articles, and excerpts from larger texts). You are expected to add meaningful comments to the conversation in every class. There are 3 to 4 papers and an oral presentation in WRTR2306. Her prompts are challenging but interesting and she is clear as to what she wants.
Her class was one of the most intellectually stimulating I've ever taken. I don't think I've ever analyzed text so deeply before her class. However, she's a SUPER tough grader, but you will learn so much about writing and crafting a solid argument.
Arbs is my favorite teacher. Yes, she grades tough, expects perfection, and assigns heavy readings, but her discussion/essay prompts are very compelling and fun. She really makes you a better writer and encourages participation. Go to office hours, build a strong rapport, be punctual, and she will bump up your grade or write excellent rec letters!
Dr. Arbery is very intelligent and passionate about English, but she isn't always the greatest teacher because she doesn't always communicate her ideas about what we're reading super clearly. She also kind of expects students to blatantly mirror/repeat her ideas in papers and assignments. Her grading also isn't super clear so go to office hours.
Dr. Arbery's class was incredibly interesting. It's a lot of reading but it's worth it. Make sure to participate in class discussions. She also gives amazing feedback on writing. You just have to make sure you go to office hours and schedule conferences with her. I really improved as a writer after taking her course. She's a tough grader.
Arbery is a great professor. She is excited to discuss with students and hear what everyone has to say, regardless of your stance on things. HEAVY reading but the curriculum was incredibly valuable. Frequent papers, I got a couple B's and still came out with an A-. The presentation is worth alot but it's an easy A. Take Arbery!
Arbery is a decently challenging professor who expects much from her students. Because of this, participation is crucial in her class every day. However, Professor Arbery gives amazing feedback. If you want a challenging class to improve your writing and english skills, I recommend taking Professor Arbery.
If you want to feel valued as a student, do not take Dr. Arbery's class. She provides opportunities for grade boosts through participation and weekly quizzes, she grades essays exceptionally harshly. The average essay grade for my class has been an 84 all semester, and she is quick to cut you down to let you know just how poor of a writer you are.
daily reading, everyday participation very difficult but her commentary and care have made me a better writer and a more critical thinker, so i definitely recommend taking her to get the most out of the class. not as scary as she seems! talked about her divorce a lot and let someone redo something kinda crazy
Joan Arbery is such a smart and wonderful teacher. She definitely expects excellence, which can make her grading pretty tough at times. However, she is very helpful with feedback and has truly made me a better writer. Her lectures are interesting and thought-provoking. Tough class but you will grow so much academically.
This professor is the least effective educator here, showing no interest in helping non-majors learn. The course is disorganized, a GPA risk for an elective nobody cares about. Her suggestion I switch majors was offensive and repulsive.
she assigns group projects that are literally so unnecessary, and lectures are so boring but have strict attendance systems so you have to go, she is also just mean
I was incredibly disappointed with this professor. She was disorganized and honestly had no idea what she was talking about. She was not helpful at all when it came to questions and could not answer them due to her cluelessness about the subject. Lastly, she is incredibly rude and condescending toward students, I would not recommend this professor.
Grades hard, assigns too much reading that has nothing to do with her discussions, is rude when students don't immediately "get it" and has an attitude. Avoid, there are better options out there.
I only took this class for credit. And I absolutely hated it. Professor is not nice. If your work wasn't what she wanted, she would get mad at the students instead of taking the blame for herself. Very boring class, don't waste your time. I would never take her again.
Don't take her class. She purposefully hides your actual grade from you so she can slap you with whatever grade she wants to give you. She chooses favorites and if she decides she does not like you she will give you a low grade no matter how much work you put in. Does not meet SMUs standards and clearly here for the wrong reasons.
DO NOT TAKE HER!! I genuinely still have nightmares from taking her class. She plays extreme favoritism, and if you get on her bad side once, she'll never let it go. Will make you feel bad about yourself and will also make comments on your clothing. Take her if you want to stay up at night (nightmares).
She was SO condescending and belittling, horrible to have to be in her class day in and day out hearing how important she is while reminding us of how insignificant we are. Her grading was absolutely random unless you parroted her ideologies back to her, so take her if you can manage holding your nose as you write otherwise find a better option.
You can memorize every single lecture slide and still do poorly in the class. Attendance is mandatory and she is the most boring professor I have ever had.
I really enjoyed professor arbery and am taking her again next semester for 2306 she is a great teacher and i felt the class helped me become a much better writer and develop critical thinking skills. While she runs a tight ship and is quite strict i think it improves her classroom environment.
She guides the in-class discussions very well and keeps things intelligent and fun. I will say though, she is very opaque with what she wants on papers (most people get a bad grade on the first paper), but you have plenty of opportunities to recover your grade. She can be a bit of stickler on mechanics, but overall she just wants to see you think.
there was so much talk about dr. arbery... i think she is amazing. a true university level professor. easy? no. the hardest? no. you get what you put in. i skimmed the readings and still did well. participate, get to know her, and dedicate time to the essays. she likes to seem tough but in reality is so sweet and cares ab her students big time.
Very rude. Her lectures are long and confusing. The worst part of my week is going to her class. I could not hate her more. Avoid her at all costs. HW is reading confusing texts and pointless scholarly articles. I walk out of her class everyday feeling like I hate my life.
Can't teach, doesn't know how to teach, is rude to your face then again in front of your class to humiliate you. Harshest grader in writing and insinuates you used ai when you didn't but doesn't come right out and say it. Then become passive aggressive to you the rest of the semester.
This is one of the worst professors at SMU. Does not seem to understand how to grade or teach. Only take if you want to tank your gpa and hate your life.
Rudest teacher at smu. Should not be a teacher as she doesn't like to help students, just belittles them. Has severe attitude problems and it's clear no one taught her how to respect people. Will nitpick the smallest things then write you hate paragraphs about it. Also she's insanely petty. You shouldn't be a teacher if you don't even like kids.
I went to office hours for help, rewrote my entire paper, and still didn't break an A. Most unhelpful and disingenuous teacher. DO NOT take this class as she will accuse you of ChatGPT constantly rather than give you a good grade.
Fosters a terrible learning enviornment. She will blatantly make aggressive comments not for the purpose of helping you learn, but just to revel in the joy she gets from being rude to students. Do not take her unless you want to deal with her attitude and disrespect all semester. Worst teacher I have ever had in my entire schooling experience.
Class was not difficult at all. She is just the most insufferable human being to exist. Rude and thinks she's above everyone. English professor is not that high of a horse to be acting like that to students. SMU hiring committee needs to do better. Easy class yet she made it the worst class I have ever been in. No one likes her, not even try hards.
Class is light. She won't give you a good grade though. Why? Because she is evil. She thinks respect goes only one way. Get ready to spend a semester gritting your teeth because you can't respond to her rude comments and paragraphs which are blatantly rude. She truly enjoys being able to walk all over students since she knows we have to be nice.
This class is 🗑️. If i could have dropped it I would have. She's a blatant liar about you using chatgpt and will use that accusation to bully you into accepting a poor grade or face the honor council. Her comments are astronomically rude and belittling and I don't know how she gets away with it, should be reported but everyone is afraid of wrath
Not sure why she thinks she is important enough to have the ego that she does, but be ready to take a semester of the most irritating human being to exist. She will nitpick the smallest things you do and you will not be able to say anything ever. Again, you are a college professor, not really important enough to belittle 19 year olds the way you do
Dismissive attitude towards questions and lack of response to emails. Tests includes material not adequately covered in class, blames the students rather than her teaching for poor class performance on a test. Spiteful.
Professor Arbery is an amazing instructor. Although her class is rigorous, she truly teaches the material. If you want to actually learn and improve, she creates an amazing space for intellectual discussion. As it is an honors course, if you put in the work, you can get an A. And If you really listen and focus, you can learn a lot from her.
It is evident that Dr. Arbery truly cares about her students and their learning. She has high expectations, so the class can be challenging at times. It was a delight to take her class.
She is condescending and rude and doesn't make sense. Will ruin your gpa.
