Online Class. Want an easy A? It exists! Joan is really nice, understanding of set backs. She posts a to do list weekly which is extremely helpful for organization snd clarity. This holiday week (Thanksgiving) I had two teachers give extra homework, Joan gave practically no homework and an extended time to finish it. I'm sure her Bio Sci is harder.
Pretty good online class, there seemed to be a lot of assignments per week, but it really drove the concepts home, and gave me a good understanding. I would recommend this as an online class, but I imagine that an "off-line" section of this course would be more "fun"...
This teacher is awesome. Passionate about what she teaches, compassionate towards students and very helpful. I took her class online. Excellent, clear instructions, lots of interesting wrriten assignments, and virtual labs which are fun to do. One of the best teachers in this college. Highly, highly recommend.
Best teacher ever!! Very clear about what needs to be done and willing to help or clarify if you need help. I took her for Bio 100 which is survey of biology (lab). Attendence is MANDATORY!! You will not pass if you don't come to class. You can easily pass with an A like me! :)
She is AWESOME!! She is so passionate about science that she makes the class seem easy. She is forgiving on the assignments and grades more on completion. She will allow late work and if you come to class and do your work you will get an A. Not to mention she is also very nice and cares about all her students.
FANTASTIC instructor, she made biology cell very fun and very interesting. I left that class loving biology! Highly recommend her for biology!
She's extremely helpful and clear on what her expectations are for the class. Everyone should take her! There's quite a bit of work every week but nothing too hard to manage. I work part time and took the class and still passed with an A
Consistently told us that we need to "figure it out" on our own without going over labs we have done so we don't even know if we have the right information. Complained about how often people missed class. Was not always organized with her own materials, and the lab manual we used was littered with errors.
Very nice and approachable instructor. You can tell she cares. I also love that exams don't make or break your grade in the class- there are other opportunities for a good grade with iclicker questions(participation), labs, and assignments. Highly recommended!
I took this class online and I have an interest in Environmental Science. I loved this class! She is very helpful and does not grade too hard (as long as you do the work and what she asks). There wasn't a final, just a week 10 quiz, not long and a little project.
Joan is amazing! I didn't have a huge interest prior to taking this class but I did afterwards. The class isn't easy, but you learn so much. Joan is so nice and approachable and wants her students to succeed. I definitely recommend this class and this professor!
Joan was an awesome Biology Instructor and very fair. Her lectures were interesting and she was very careful that when you did your labs you understood what was happening. I loved her!
My grade was a reflection of my ability to adapt, not of her ability to teach at all. She contracts herself all the time; giving instructions for projects, then changing her instructions the next day. INVEST IN A VOICE RECORDER! Keep every assignment she gives back; she looses things. She really doesn't care and doesn't hide it very well.
The absolute WORST teacher I have ever had my entire academic career! Welcome back to pre-school, seating charts, must check your work to move on, she divides you into groups. She is not an aproachable person! She does not elaborated on anything in her lectures & She explains things horribly! Constantly contradicts herself.
I feel like Joan is not very clear in her lectures. If you really want to learn, best review things in the book rather than just going over lecture notes. She tries to incorporate a lot of interactive hands-on components but she always mixes things up somehow and it's just confusing. I did like the labs though; you did learn from them
Joan was great! Super easy class, very relaxed with due dates, always willing to reopen a quiz if you forgot to take it. Just be upfront and message her if you need clarification or more time on an assignment. She loves this subject and it's a very opinion and passion oriented class. Take if you are truly interested! She will appreciate your views.
I liked taking Joan's class! She is helpful, just make sure your question is clear because she can answer something totally different. There are only two lab reports that are nice, and she is not a tough grader on labs or quizzes. iClicker questions are easy points!!
Great, caring professor, some people complain she isn't clear. Always helped me out when i had a question or missed an assignment. Best bet for the class is going over her powerpoints she posts and then reading the book a lot. Reading is really important to the class, if you're caught up on reading, she'll make it clear which things are important.
I have mixed reviews on Joan. She was very nice but a complete ditz. She contradicted herself a lot! Attendance wasn't "mandatory" but you got points from answering Iclicker questions. As long as you re read the powerpoints and look things up online, you can still get a good grade out of the class. 4 exams and she drops one.
Lots of assignments. Weekly: discussion boards (your post + 5 replies), group discussion boards, projects, reading, quizzes, ect. Must participate. Interesting class. Learned a lot.
Compared to other's comments, I'm willing to bet the online version of her class is less confusing. You don't have to sit and listen to lectures but to make up for it there is a lot of reading. Most of the weekly discussion questions are fact-based opinions so as long as you do all your assignments you'll get a good grade. It's interesting too!
I loved her. she gave extra credits, and she was very easy grader. If you memorize and understand the materials, you will definitely get a good grade. Do your job. Don't miss lab and iclicker questions! It will boost up your grade a lot.
Pretty easy class but unclear in what she wants and expectations evolved as the class went on. Even though a lot of the assignments were the same week to week, the expectations changes pretty drastically from start-finish. As a summer class it was unorganized. There were a few weeks you could tell she put 2 weeks together without changing the load.
Lots of assignments, like case study, group discussion, and discussion board every week. Quizzes were hard and not enough time to use (multiple choice and essay questions). Also, there are nine quizzes on total and two quizzes will be taken on campus, it is ridiculous since this is online class. I won't take this professor again.
This class is a bit overwhelming at first but assignments are simple and clear. There are a lot of assignments but none of crazy hard. A quiz on chapters from the textbook are weekly, but they are not impossible. I learned a lot of valuable things and enjoyed the class overall. The prof really cares about her students.
Joan was very kind and very patient. My class was every Monday and Wednesday for three hours. Expect a lot of reading, and the textbook is required for the class. Her grading is easy but you have to show up in order to understand the material.
Bio is a tough class no matter who teaches, so be ready. But Joan is a great teacher, her lectures give good examples of concepts, and icliker questions were helpful to keep it fresh. Gives good help in labs, walks you through it if you're stuck. Exams cover both textbook and lecture so be sure to show up every day, you can get bonus points too.
Her content isn't organized whatsoever. All over the place, and hard to follow. You will basically teach yourself through the textbook. Which won't be easy at all.
Joan's lectures were fast-paced. We used iClickers in class - this composed about 50 points total. Don't skip class, she "springs" random in-class assignments and gives extra credit for them. There were 6 total exams, the final was cumulative, but stressed more on later material. It's a general biology class at a college level, so be ready to work.
From day one I hated this professor. The syllabus was completely wrong, and when it was corrected, still showed wrong dates. Not even HALF of the assignments were listed on the syllabus. Weekly group projects. She was incredibly disorganized, contradicted herself all the time. Cancelled a day of lecture a week, but stressed how behind we were.
Joan is great. Very lecture heavy but explains pretty decently, I had to read and do extra work outside of class to understand some concepts but she really cares that you understand the material. Easy grader on all assignments vs other bio teachers I've had, tests can be tough so don't cram at the last minute. Do extra reading & practice!
Professor Brindle was quite nice but disorganised at times. Lots of little assignments, which are easy but hard to keep track of and sometimes difficult to understand. Quizzes were the most difficult part and sometimes they had mistakes. Overall I would take her again (if I needed the class) but not my favourite class of the quarter.
Pay attention in lecture and read the book and you will be fine. Make sure to attend class every day because she has iClicker quizzes that count for participation. Test q's are tricky so understand concepts well. Accepts late work. Make sure to check for assignments and post/pre lab quizzes due on canvas bc sometimes she won't tell you about them.
This teacher was so awful, I ended up with an A in her class but that is just because her test questions were online. Towards the end of the year she decided to load us up with homework (busy work) that would take forever. The second to last week we had 8 assignments. She opens test randomly and only gives you a day to take it. Dont take it
Be ready to work for this class. It is necessary to go to class everyday because of her eye clicker questions. She is the easiest grader I've ever had for a college teacher which was awesome. Her tests can be tricky, but as long as you understand and read the material you should be fine. She also is willing to drop a test grade if you bomb a test.
This was a pretty difficult online class for me. Brindle structures her week start/end times different so that messed me up a lot, and there are also a lot of little assignments that felt to me like busy work. Quizzes were fairly easy tho if you read the book thoroughly, and she lets you use notes on the midterm & final. Easy grader too!
Joan is a wonderful instructor! There are a lot of opportunities for extra credit in her class. There is a quiz each week worth a hefty amount of points and heavily relied on the lecture and book. Occasionally, there will be additional assignments that allow the student to better understand the content learned within that week.
Joan didn't have the best lectures, but her class overall was pretty easy. She was a pretty easy grader and didn't give out that many assignments. Her exams are all multiple choice and they're pretty simple and clear. Participation matters though, because she does iClicker questions, which we get points for.
The course had a large number of assignments. She kept the class organized with weekly to-do sheets, even if it is our responsibility, she helped and always emailing the class. She was always providing feedback which I expect out of an instructor. She gave a few 2nd chance options if you missed an assignment. Wonderful, caring instructor.
Love her class, but be aware of iclickers because they count towards the end of your grade.
Joan is incredible. I love science because of her. She is AMAZING!
Joan is a very nice lady but not the best instructor. She is very scattered. You will need to do alot of self teaching in this class. Her lectures are all over the place, she does not go over whats needed to learn for the exams. In canvas, she does not post due dates until a few days before they are due. Alot of self teaching is needed!!
Joan has no business teaching an online class. Thankfully, the textbook is interesting. There are lots of little busy assignments. However, you need to know she has no respect for you. HER week is Fri - Thurs so it is in direct contrast to a normal school week. She surprises you with assignments last minute that were NOT there. We have photo proof
She has tons of busy work, posts tests at the last second without telling you they were happening, noncommunicative, and overall was extremely disrespectful of her students and their time. Instructions unclear, tests always contained multiple mistakes. It made for a stressful class. Do NOT take.
Joan is completely disorganized, doesn't put anything on a calendar. Directs you to a syllabus which is fairly useless as it contains many items which you never encounter. Canvas is a mess and her lectures are all over the place. Does not care if you work full time and wants to manage your time for you. Easy A, but not because you learned anything.
Joan is a nice, approachable professor. There were definitely times of frustration when it was unclear what exactly needed to get done but, if you ask, things will make sense. For the quarter, there are 3 sectional exams and a final exam which aren't that difficult (just make sure to study). iClickers are used so attend class to get those points.
I will try to be as objective as possible about this class. I have never had an instructor who was so disorganized. The way she set up her canvas was so frustrating. I hated asking a question because her answer usually confused me more. The test always had a few errors as well. The class itself isn't very difficult but man it was frustrating.
Her sense of humor and story telling skills are wonderful, but seems to struggle communicating with students. Often unclear or incomplete directions that she will refuse to clarify. Won't email/talk outside of class. Basic review of high school Bio. 3 Exams, mandatory labs, extra credit opportunity, iClicker questions, online textbook (free!)
Joan is a SAINT! One of the nicest, most approachable teachers I've ever had. Her class is incredibly entertaining, but not too easy that you get bored. I wish I could take her again!
This was by far the most disorganized class I've ever taken in my life. While Joan is a lovely lady--she has terrible communication and organizational skills. On the PLUS side, she is a very easy grader. So, if you need to take this class, just be ready for a very unclear syllabus and expectations. Otherwise if you do the work, you'll get an A!
note : class taken onine (during covid) Positive: she is nice and easy grader - do labs and reading you will get an A Negative: poor organization, no good responses, no additional lectures - you are basically on your own with the book, learn as much or as little as you like and still get an A
Prof Brindle is the most laid back prof. She will help you as much as she can. Since biology is not usually done online, you can tell she struggles with tech stuffs. Her class is easy and she will give you all the resources you need to understand a chapter. Her lab groups never worked online but just be patient.
Found the previous comments about this professor unfounded. Modules are understandable, read the directions for the weekly requirements. The Simbio Labs was tricky to set up- get started on them asap. There is a lot of homework, be ready to learn. She always replied to any questions I had quickly for clarity. Positive teacher, very important class.
Joan was always willing to work with me throughout the quarter and was very fair with her grading. When I needed extensions due to outstanding circumstances she was always fair about it and was happy to allow me some extra time. Highly recommend taking her for Biology 100. I found the class to be very interesting!
Dr. Brindle was a great teacher for biology 100, she made instructions very clear. When it comes to midterms and finals you can look up the answers but she makes the class so fun and so interesting that you can retain a lot of the material that you won't even need to do that. I would definitely reccommend her as your first bio professor!
Joan was great, she cared about you learning the subject more than penalizing you for getting an answer wrong. There was a prelab-lab-post lab with about 2 assignments not including Pearson or SIM assignments due every week. There's a lot of busywork. Make sure you stay on top of it and you will do fine. She was very easy to ask questions/contact.
Not bad at all, she said to expect to spend 2 hours on HW every day but she's wrong. I maybe barely spent 2 hours every week. Easy class, you learn A LOT about our environment, CO2, and climate change. A lot of the words I learned in this class like biodiversity and key species, I use today in the present time. Use the e-text for the Quizzes!
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! This class seems easy after chem but Prof. Brindle is a mess. She is the most disorganized professor you will ever meet. She does not remember her own grading criteria from one day to the next. She does not write her own exams. You are not prepared for exams and you will not be prepared no matter how many hours you study. RUN
Joan Brindle has been hilariously dubbed by College Confidential as the most miserable little professor in America. And I can see why. I don't know what her deal is, but in every single lecture she makes numerous mistakes and some students who have actually read the textbook will jump in and get her back on track. They're teaching us at this point.
Joan is a really nice professor. If you talk with her and express concerns or issues, she will address them. I will echo that she is a bit disorganized. The material is complex but if you attend class, do the labs, and do your homework you will do great. The homework was really light compared to the anatomy series that follows this course.
She is definitely a bit unorganized, but that is by far the worst thing about her. I felt like her lectures were interesting and easy to pay attention to. She truly cares and if she sees you working hard, you will reap the benefits. She is also kind of hilarious! 10/10 recommend!
Joan is wonderful! The last week we all felt a bit overwhelmed but it worked out. Her exams are all closed book so lots of memorization but she made labs fun. Definitely learned a lot from her.
Great teacher. Lectures are long so buckle up! She's always there to help and want's you to succeed. MAKE SURE YOU TURN IN YOUR ASSIGNMENTS! if you don't your grade will drop very quickly, luckily, she has a low late policy.
The class was challenging but she designs it in a way that as long as you pay attention, do your work, and ask questions when you need to, you'll do fine. She has an obvious passion for teaching and never makes you feel bad for asking a question that might seem obvious to other students. Her patience and kindness make this class a great one.
A fantastic professor, who addresses concerns well. Despite the complexity of the material, attending classes, participating in labs, and finishing homework are the keys to success.
Prof Brindle was absolutely amazing. I took her environmental science class my winter quarter for running start and after that class, it made me want to major in environmental science. Her class was super easy and she's super sweet. Assignments were super easy and labs were fun! Highly recommend her.
Joan is a great professor. Her lectures prepare you for the exams and as long as you show up, do your reading and assignments you will do well. I highly recommend her.
Very unorganized and difficult to know what assignments in canvas are due. Very unclear where to turn in assignments from lecture and ZERO paper turn-ins despite numerous paper assignments given. Very lecture and textbook heavy. Only good thing is she walks through all the labs with the class. Not the kindest professor and a bit strict
I enjoyed my first term at EvCC because of Joan. She has clear expectations and is very flexible regarding the amount of work needed. She provides an overview of the following week's activities, making it easier for me to plan ahead of time. She gives a walk-through of the weekly lab and makes sure that misconceptions are clarified.
I enjoyed her class. She is very approachable and is willing to answer questions about the lesson.
Although Joan is a very kind and helpful professor, her canvas course is set up very poorly. It is very hard to find the assignments that she mentions, there isn't even a tab to check your grade at the moment. Another thing that I want to mention is that there is a Pearson textbook for this course and it cost roughly ≈$100. Overall mediocre prof.
Joan is a very sweet person and really cares for her students. Her lectures tend to be boring and she has in class worksheets that usually will not be graded. She walks through every lab. Exams are multiple choice and not difficult if you did the reading. She has about 2 homework assignments a week, a pre lab/ post lab, and a quiz most weeks.
She's so difficult and doesn't give out detailed information about the class
I felt like I was overstimulated in the class as we had to do many things at once with a lot of different material being covered. I wouldn't recommend taking this as a 8am class. Her modules in the course on canvas is not clear and unorganized. However, she does answer fast for emails and is nice.
You have to be pretty independent in this class. I-Clickers used so you need to show up to lectures. Canvas page was pretty disorganized so make sure to ask if you aren't clear about a due date. In class assignments (done together), 3 exams (multiple choice with some short answer), and a quiz for most chapters. Expensive textbook required.
In class quizzes, attendance is mandatory. Lectures long/ boring, she draws them out as long as possible so you don't get out of class early even if you finish lab early. Exam days she lectures other chapter before hand so you don't leave early. Canvas is unorganized will not show up in your upcoming assignments tab she puts no due dates.
Joan is a good person who wants to help her students learn the material. She is an old school professor, relying on paper homework and tools like quizlet and Iclickers. She also is not the most knowledgeable, but she does make sure to outline the important information for the class. I wouldn't mind taking her again, but I wouldn't seek her out.
Very nice lady, she will let you turn in work very late, and she will give you a bonus 5 points on your exams. Not only this but if you get less than 60% on your exam, she will set a bare minimum of a 60% that you can get nonmatter what.
Be ready to teach yourself the entire textbook. You must spend 3+ hours a day studying to do well in this class- use you tube to help you learn, she does not teach. She is kind- but not helpful.
The workload for this class is insane. She puts in the syllabus that the school week is Mon-Sun and expects you to do assignments every day, but then takes weeks to grade anything. Very unresponsive to emails, and if she does reply at all gives you a runaround answer to your questions. She will also add more work mid-week and not say anything.
Brindle has good intentions. She is a bit unorganized. She goes through the labs with you. Her CANVAS modules aren't great; you must find random assignments that aren't in her weekly outlines. Her tests are complex because she doesn't tell you precisely what to focus on. It's like drinking out of a fire hydrant. It felt very rushed.
She was honestly good. It was a bit frustrating that she would add assignments in mid week. But.. She was an easy grader, assignments weren't too hard, and the concepts are simple. Not to mention, the reading was easy to comprehend and I really liked the textbook. This class also helped me better understand the environment/ issues surrounding.
New assignments will pop up mid-week with no warning. Instructions are unclear or contradict themselves. Each week averages two discussion boards, three or more written assignments, and a quiz. If the quizzes are multiple choice, they're timed, and you have about a minute per question. Otherwise, the quizzes are essay-answer style.
very kind and accommodating! went through each lab question during class time and left time for student who weren't sure on material to ask questions. definitely a lot to read, but she provides a lot of resources and has very clear grading criteria.
She cares about your success and education. Always easy to reach if you have questions. Makes lectures fun. Walks you through the labs very well. Just put in the effort needed, get ready to read a lot! She gives you lots of extra resources for the material. Stay consistent to actually learn the material.
She is amazing , I would take her class all over again
Honestly I was worried about taking her class because her rating was so low. But her class wasn't even bad whatsoever, and Joan is an overall nice professor. Her lectures were easy, and she makes sure you understand what you're learning. There was only 3 exams and all cumulative, but it wasn't bad. Her classes are mostly interactive which is good!
she's amazing and understanding ,
Instructor speaks too quickly and quietly, jumps from item to item with no pause. Does not answer questions well. Impossible to learn from anything the instructor says. All learning is catch up.
Worst instructor I've had. Very disorganized content.
Joan is an okay prof. I was feeling good at the start because of her high rating, but I'm disappointed. Lectures don't include any in-depth explanations of anything, so they were hard to follow. It's like she expects you to already know all of the material, and she's just summarizing it. It's a great class if you're good at self-teaching.
Great professor for a heavy bio class. Super responsive and fixes grade issues quickly if you reach out. Consistent weekly workload includes labs, short quizzes, Pearson assignments, and occasional additional work, but it's manageable if you stay organized. She provides multiple ways to learn and truly wants students to succeed. Would recommend.
This class requires students to stay on top of Canvas and deadlines, as the course can feel a bit disorganized at times. That said, she is incredibly responsive, kind, and genuinely wants her students to succeed. She is also funny and very approachable. which makes asking questions easier. I definitely felt supported this quarter. Would take again.
A lot of self teaching required and lots of assignments. Stay ahead on reading and assignments. She was nice and easy to talk to.
