This woman is so monotone and boring. I find it difficult to stay awake in her class. Take her class only out of desparate measure.
I had college algebra with professor Haig. I hadn't done a math problem in 11 years and was nearly kicked out of class for how poorly I did on the proficiency test. She gave me a chance to stay, and although the work load was tremendous, all you had to do to succeed was to actually do the homework. Very helpful as long as you took the time to ask.
She seemed kind of crazy and always seemed angry if you didn't understand something. when people would ask questions she would get all iritated and shake. She gives out a ton of homework everyday and if you have a lot of time then you can pass this class by just doing the homework, but if you don't have time then you won't do well.
Very hard class, lots of homework, if you recognize from the beginning that it will be hard work you'll be fine. She is helpful/understanding if you approach her, and if you show you are commited she'll work with you, (on due dates and such). She's not perfect, she has to deal w/ alot of people who don't want to work, so don't take it personally.
There's a lot of work but she grades all your homework which gives you extra points to go with your tests. She also gives extra credit which is a big help! She's a good teacher and though the classes are a bit laborious, you'll learn a lot.
I was taking this class with her for review, and she makes it as hard as possible to understand. She makes simple things, seem like an eternity to understand. I wouldn't recommend taking a course with her unless you are very desperate. She is a nice professor, but she does a terrible job at teaching the material.. She does do E.C. a little bit.
the tests do not reflect in proportion to what she taught in class. One thing that she may have went over for five minutes will be half the test rahter than the stuff you spend 3 days on. She does give extra credit and grades homwork, as well as drops a test. fair yes, though oh yeah.
The absolute worst math teacher I have ever had! Assigns incredible amounts of homework, (4 hrs/day, MIN) so you will in fact know the material. Test's don't relate to assignments. You can easily get 100% on every homework assignment, and still fail every test! I wouldn't have made it this far if I were bad at math, so I think the issue is her.
WARNING: DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Do yourself a favor and stay as far away as possible from this professor! Even if you have no choice but to take this class, DON'T. This woman doesn't want you to succeed, she wants you to fail. Her class average was 50% and she still refused to curve tests. The worst profesor i have ever had hands down. STAY AWAY!!
Absolute worst teacher i've ever had. assigns loads of homework and then doesn't collect it or, if she does collect it, you get a zero because she graded one problem out of six pages. tests absolutely do not match the material covered. when asked questions, she tells us we can do it ourselves. do not take this class, not even out of desperation.
She goes fast and makes a lot of mistakes which further confuses students. She gives a lot of homework but does not grade very much of it resulting in very little feedback
Awful teacher! I passed, but barely. Unless you are repeating math 107, I wouldn't take her course...you will prob. fail it! Math normally comes easy to me...not this class! Prof. is unhelpful, confusing, and incredibly pompous. "This isn't hard math, folks!" is her answer to your questions. UAA needs to terminate prof. Haig.
I am not good at math but I have to say I learned a lot in this class. She is a really hard teacher but therefore I worked the hardest I ever have, and so far I have an A, maybe a B. She lets you drop one test and lets you do extra credit. If you're willing to work hard she is a good teacher.
She is hard, very demanding, which doesn't bother me, actually has pushed me harder to do well in her class. What bothers me is when her assignments are confusing. She assigns blackboard assignments and sometimes homework assignments that she didn't go over in class, or doesnt examine before assigning. however she helps when you come to her office
fast and confusing. lot of even problems which makes answers in back pretty useless unless you want to discover answers to your current questions on homework through the examples of other problems that you don't understand.
I've had her for 105 and 172. She's a great teacher and assigns a lot of homework, but the homework is what will help you succeed on her test. Most of her problems on the test come from the homework. She gives extra credit which will help a lot, especially if you score low on a test. It's been the best experience I've ever had in a math course.
Teaches. That's what you get. Hard, yes, too much homework, and demanding. Wants mastery of material. Still, a very good teacher. Clear, organized, knows what to do, say, show, tell, does not waste time. Ornery.
Took this class as a refresher and was very helpful. Lots of homework, not all was collected. She went fast but also willing to stop and answer questions. Lots of extra credit!!! Overall a decent teacher
Don't do it!!!! You will regret it! Everyone except two people failed the first exam! Her exams are nothing like your homework and extremely more difficult than they had to be. If you want her help, you better have mornings available because she is gone after 1pm. I would consider her a good teacher but once again, her exams are from left field
She's pretty Awesome
This is a difficult teacher with serious control issues. Does not stick to what she says. Treats students as though they're in junior high. Requires lots of work but not in a manner that's helpful. Grades reflect, to a certain extent, how she feels about a student in personality.
Haig was great she demands a lot of work from you but she has easy expectations and she is very clear about what she wants. Always willing to help and further explains things if needed. But pretty strict about attendance and how you need to be there in order to learn.
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE! I got stuck with her because I registered for math at the last minute and her class was the only one with openings. She is very informative, but make sure you memorize the formulas. Assigned homework, but didn't consistently collect them. Make sure you STUDY for the tests, they are tricky.
Prof Haig grades on a curve and gives extra credit in the form of practice test (always do it even though its not really like the tests she gives). Lots of homework and collects most of it but only grades few problems so do them all! Test questions come from left field, but she goes over what to expect. Overall, I enjoyed her class-great Professor!
Horrible! She's awful, totally inconsistent, and you never know whether or not she will collect homework, and which problems will be graded. Does not directly answer questions, and good luck trying to get her to go over something you had trouble with on the homework. Avoid this woman!
Terrible teacher, she's condescending & rude, when she lectures she looks up to the ceiling. She's inconsistent, she writes on the chalkboard so no matter where you sit you can miss pertinent steps in the formula. It's uncomfortable to ask questions. The whole class failed the 1st exam & she had to generously curve the retake. STAY AWAY!
Anyone who thinks this women is a good teacher is extremely wrong. She doesnt help a student when they ask for it. She randomly gives zeros on homework that is completely done and cant/wont tell you why she graded it that way. She stands infront of the class dragging on and on without any interest. I would advise any person not to take her!!!!!
no graphing calculators, at all. There are certain chapters I would understand not being able to use graphing calculators, but there are several that we should be able to use them on, but we still aren't allowed. Also, there is daily homework that is often very time consuming.
Self righteous.
She has an extremely arrogant and unkind personality. This wouldn't be half as bad if this attitude of hers didn't compensate your grade. All of her homework is very tedious and long, and the tests are very difficult. It's not the course either, I got an 'A' from a different professor with the same class. DO NOT take this professor by any means.
If you go to every class and study at least two hours outside of class you will be lucky to get a C.
Controlling, vague, unorganized, inconsistent. Poor teaching style. I like math & thought I would do fine despite the reviews. She fully expects you to spend 12 hours of homework/study per week for her class. If you do all of her assigned work you can get an A. Take anyone else, take 107 instead of 172 if you have to.
This prof is very clear and teaches a lot of materials. She gives a lot of extra credit, that is if you decide to do them. She lectures all class period and leave little time for questions. Just try to stay awake. I got over 100% with the final and I did all the extra credit.
give lots of extra credit, explain stuff very clearly, but lectures the whole class period, leaves no time for questions.
Lots of Homework!
She's an okay teacher. She gives you lots of extra credits but you just got to do them. She explain her lesson throughly, just try to stay awake in her class. Also study for the tests, it can be hard at time.
She explains the materials very clearly. Gives daily hw and alot of extra credit. Exams are moderate. However, she lectures the whole class time and speaks very slowly. Try to stay awake! Overall, very educational.
She is an alright professor. Gives a lot of homework everyday but doesn't always collect it. Lots of extra credit available.
Class is easy, but she goes really fast and gives out a whole bunch of homework that she doesn't always collect. Takes class up to the second class ends and if she's done early she will move on to the next section. Gives you a ton of extra credit with answer sheets so do it! oh yes don't let her catch you texting or having your phone ring!
She doesn't slow down or pause in between math problem so it is impossible to both rite down the equation work an answer and receive any information. And I am a descent note taker. It's seemingly on purpose that she goes so fast that you cannot interpret. She's rude even when your polite and do and show you work, and she goes over easy examples but
It is seemingly on purpose that she goes so fast that you cannot interpret. No time for questions so no one asks though everyone is in the weeds. You will still be writing as she has moved on to a new equation. Very difficult to learn in class. Will have to do all teaching to your self, good luck! She doesn't help nor deserve your tuition money.
She goes very fast and it is hard to keep up while she is explaining what we are learning. Tests can be difficult but if you go to class and take notes then then after studying the notes you can pass the exams. She is very fast but she is knowledgeable.
Very straight-forward professor. She is helpful, but honest. Just study and turn in the assigned homework. she gave extra credit(practice tests) before the actual tests. The not so smart people in the classroom were trying to make up for points at the very end, and she didn't let them(obviously). The class is overall easy. I got an A and I'm not a genius.
PRECALC IS FAST PACED, BUT SHE EXPLAINS IT CLEARLY. IF YOU DONT UNDERSTAND SHE WILL SLOW DOWN AND ANSWER YOUR INDIVIDUAL QUESTION SO YOU ARE NOT LOST. EVERY TEST HAS A PRETEST WHICH IS WORTH 5 POINTS EXTRA CREDIT. EACH TEST IS 50 POINTS SO THE PRETEST IS LIKE A TEN PERCENT BONUS ON YOUR TEST GRADE. PRETESTS ARE GREAT TEST PRACTICE, NEAR SAME PRBLMS
Best math her I've ever had! She gives extra credit for doing chapter study guides so I had over 100% in her class. Test questions are mostly from the study guides. Rarely collects assignments. And she LOVES it when you visit her during office hours and is more than happy to help. My only complaint is that she doesn't teach Calc I II or III.
Dr. Haig is amazing! I hated math before, but she is so clear in her lectures. She can be a bit hard to talk to at first, but she'll be happy to help you. Do all the homework, even if it isn't graded; it will help on the tests. There's lots of extra credit too! I still don't like math, but she made it engaging and bearable. I highly recommend her.
This professor respects hard work. If you are motivated in her class and willing to ask questions you WILL succeed. Found her very gracious and happy to help. Does give homework; also gives extra credit. Take her for math if you can.
Challeging but fair.
Very difficult and fast paced. Asking for help in class is inconvenient, and her office hours are short. However, she is glad to help if you go to them. Take lots of notes and study study study (with a group if you can). Her tests are based off of the pretests, which are extra credit, but the homework can seem unrelated to lessons in class.
Haig was one of the best profs I've had. I am not good at math & I was able to get an A. She makes you go through every step so you don't get the wrong answer. She offers extra credit for every test which helps you learn the content. The finalmulti choice. Tests after every chapter you really understand the content. Drops 1 test! must go to class.
She was nice, & very helpful if you ask. Problems on the final exam looked nothing like the ones she assigned for you to practice on. I knew the material but the problems were worded so differently that I couldn't figure out what it was asking me to do. Her organization of the classassignments takes some getting used to . Overall not a bad class.
Tough professor, lots of tests. Her lectures are long, but she will stop periodically to let people catch up and answer questions. She does let you turn in practice tests for extra credit before each actual exam.
She is an amazing teacher. She sees her job not as just making money but she really cares about doing it right and helping the students.
unless you already know calc do not take this professor, she talks to the blackboard, you can barely hear her, you cant see the work she is showing as example. she does not know how to teach. text books are more information then she is, nd math text books are poorly written.
Trig She goes through the material quickly, but she will always take time to help you if you ask. She assigns homework each class but doesn't always collect it, and you can turn in a practice test before each exam for extra credit. Her class isn't necessarily very interesting, but as long as you show up and do homework you will get a good grade.
Tests are basically blank so you really need to know exactly what you're doing otherwise you'll fail. If you go in to ask for help she might be condesending and expects you to understand everything. Always homework and you have to get every problem correct for credit. Tough grader overall.
Joan is a nice person. As a professor, no. I did the homework and sometimes would get a 0.5/5 or 1/5 with no reasoning. Little feedback for mistakes made on tests and homework. Impatient when asked questions. Not clear when explaining concepts, even when asked to simplify answers. She talks to the ceiling or the blackboard. Not a good experience.
Lots of homework! Daily homework and also extra problems before each exam. However, the practice exams are extra credit. The exams can be difficult, but they aren't completely unfair. She is clear on what she expects you to know and the practice exams are fairly accurate to the exams. The biggest thing is just to keep up & do all the work.
Get ready to take a test every other week and make sure you attend class or you will be missing the important stuff in the lectures. Did not had the best or worst experience, but she gets the work done.
Mrs Haig is a tough professor for two reasons: she is inconsistent and assigns huge swathes of homework. As her student I passed every test and exam with above an 85 and still almost failed her class because she grades her huge homework assignments on correctness, not completion. Frequently she will assign large assignments and never collect them.
I have taken 2 separate courses from her, she is a very tough grader, but she genuinely wants her students to actually understand all the mathematical ideas she teaches. She usually drops the lowest test scores and is very understanding and forgiving if you reach out to her. Also, she does look at the ceiling and is quiet but still teaches well!
Her grading often doesn't make sense only offering 5 points for 60 problem homework assignments (not always graded by completion). Not only is there nightly homework but homework due on the day of the test (only worth 10 points with 40-60+ problems). Lectures are long and she moves quickly, Better not take a bathroom break or you'll miss a section.
I took Dr. Haig for Calc 1 and I was pleased with her teaching. She offered 10 pts extra credit for every pretest you completed, she dropped the lowest test grade, and she gave a 25 point pre-final extra credit assignment. I felt like she made it very attainable to get the grade you want even if some of the material was challenging.
Precalc, a 6 credit class at the time, was one of the first UAA classes I took. Dr. Haig made me want to come back. She definitely cares and will help especially if you do your part, put in the work, and be respectful. Even after I was done with her class she was really supportive. Precalc was the hardest class I've ever taken but it was worth it.
This teacher moves way to fast. Almost everyone failed the first test. She doesnt care if you pass or fail. This professor will take any point of a test she can. Very disorganized with her homework. Doesnt say what she wants done, then expects everyone to get it done. Will complain on the daily and will not grade hw If edges arent clean. AVOID
failed the first test, teacher had to curve the test because majority of class failed, I have learned more from the math tutors and my textbook, homework is a nightmare and she always changes the different problems and it is very confusing homework is based of or right or wrong answers and the tests, good luck charlie nothing like the review.
the math tutors did not even understand her way of teaching. If you miss one day you miss a whole chapter it is like a mile a minute in this class and homework is a disaster she only grades based on right or wrong answers not completion so photo math is your best friend if you want to double check your work on the homework.
Required up to 20 hours of outside classwork
Homework is only written on the chalkboard during class if you skip you won't get the assignment. The assignment also changes constantly, if you leave when the class is supposed to get out, you will miss several problems she adds on as an afterthought but grades. Homework is also collected randomly and is never consistent, it might be 5min or 5hrs.
I took Dr. Haig for Applied Cal and absolutely loved her. She gives lots of homework which isn't worth very many points, although she does offer extra credit for every practice exam you turn in before the actual exam and drops the lowest test score (but not the final). Calculus is a tough subject so you need to put in the time and effort.
Dr. Haig is one of the worst professors/teachers Ive had in my life. She assigns 50 questions for homework and if you get a little mishap in a problem shell take 2 points off, meaning 10 mishaps a zero on the assignment. For our second test, she added a 20 more questions to it 5 days in advance that we were not prepared for. CHOOSE SOMEONE ELSE.
Dr. Haig was great, she offers lots of extra credit and chances to improve your grade. It can be a little tricky to figure out what needs to be turned in when because she has blackboard set up a little weird IMO but if you get confused just ask her! She gives the homework in class so make sure you go, she doesnt post those ones on Blackboard.
Dr. Haig is ridiculous, exhaust all other options before taking her class. I passed calculus despite this professor not because of her. Please do yourself a favor and do not take her class.
Professor Haig is a tough professor. Her exams are a lot and some are a week and 1/2 apart. She moves very fast between units. She is very strict on her grading homework and will dock you points for little mistakes. Although, she gives extra credit before every test and is reasonable when it comes to homework. She is a very nice professor.
Prof Haig is one of my favorite professors that Ive ever had. I had her for trig and calc I and Id take her for more classes if I could. She truly cares about her students and will put in a lot of effort to help you if you need it. She encourages questions and makes sure that you understand the answer before moving on. Lots of extra credit too.
Professor Haig was overall a great professor , she is really good with explaining the work one on one , I felt like I understood better. She is very fast paste in the units and is a very tough grader if you miss any little explanation of any sort you will get points off but she is also very understanding.
Old school professor! accumulative tests! lots of homework! I spent 4 to 5 hours a day doing homework and still don't think I passed this course. Very tough grader. doesn't spend much time explaining the work or concepts behind it. Expects you to know the material. I would adjust my schedule to get a different teacher or plan on getting a low grade
Professor is very quick-paced often skipping through notes and making multiple mistakes per lesson in example problems. Not online-savy and changes the format of homework randomly. One time assigned homework in class and uploaded a completely different assignment. Will take away points if possible if you ask her to review a problem she graded.
Practice tests are part of your grade and not graded before tests.
Dr. Haig truly helped me understand and pass Calculus with flying colors. Her office hours are incredibly helpful and she is always happy to assist. She gives practice exams that mirror the real ones for extra credit, and she gives partial credit on exams even if you get the answer wrong. You do need to be organized and neat to do well.
The toughest grader, she takes off more points for missing a question than the problem is even worth. She wouldn't explain any problems we needed help with. She gave lots of extra credit and dropped the lowest test score, but I honestly felt like I was teaching myself calculus. I wouldn't recommend this class unless you've taken calculus before.
Professor Haig was a great teacher for me. She gives a lot of examples which helped me understand the material better. However, there was a lot of work and she's very test heavy. She's definitely there to help, and always will answer your questions. Be ready to spend entire days studying.
Harshest grader ever. Homework assignments were not graded on a normal scale as if you get 3 questions wrong on a 25 question assignment you can get a 0 on the entire homework. I also did not get full credit on an E.C. problem because I did not use the method she wanted even though we had not been taught it yet. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU HAVE A LIFE.
Is not tech savvy at all. We did not get our first grade back till after spring break. While doing problems on the board she makes multiple mistakes, making it very difficult to follow and learn the correct steps. If you do any mental math you will not get credit regardless of how easy it is.
My class had exams that went ungraded for over 2 months and the week before finals week we still have only gotten one out of 4 exam grades returned to us. she does not accept late work even with her not grading anything for months after it was collected. If you have to miss a test due to sports travel or family emergency you just fail the exam.
