She's an amazing teacher who knows her stuff and has been almost everywhere. I took Western Civ I and II from her, and I really enjoyed it. Her tests are difficult, and you have to know the material by heart, so work up the essays beforehand.
Western Civ I. First name is Joan. Very good teacher with lots of knowledge from personal trips to various places. Tests were m/c with essay. Study sheet provided with essay questions. Lots of reading with daily grade based on class participation.
She is the BESTEST, GREATEST teacher to ever happen to history. I love her to death. I took west.civ 2 with her and her classes are like story time for me; a break from the drag regular classes that i take everyday. test are easy as long as you study it.
I really admire Dr. Jenkins. Though she is at times tough, she is one of the best professors. She is not an easy A, but she gives the best lectures by far. Great sense of humor and great knowledge of her subject- very interseting, opened my eyes to a lot!
Did not enjoy her lectures. She was kind of rude and also her test were very difficult and did not follow the study guides well.
Did not like her. She was rude, and unhelpful.
Tests are hard. She is so boring. and gets really mad if your not on time. The writing assignments are easy but she doesn't give good notes at all. She just lectures and expects you to do it all on your own
Very hard, very hard grader, I had to study a lot and I barely got a C. Makes the tests misleading on purpose
be warned: the tests are hard. however, dr. jenkins is very helpful if you go talk to her, and if you do the reading, take careful notes in lecture, and ask questions, you'll be able to pull it off, and you will learn a lot.
She is verrry knowledgeable in her field and gives insightful lectures. Tests are tough and require a decent amount of studying. It is, however, nice to learn from someone who enjoys her subject so much.
She is a rude teacher! Knows what she is talking about but strict! I went to class every single day and took notes on whatever she was talking about and for what? TO GET AN F! Hopefully she has changed these past 2-3 years when i had her!
Dr. Jenkins is a fantastic teacher! Her class is tough and required more study time than many of my classes at UTDallas, but I have learned more from her than from most history professors. Her tests are hard, but not everything in life should be easy. She is an incredible person, with a passion for her work. Well worth the effort.
DONT EVEN GO TO CLASS, HER LECTURES BARELY COVER ANYTHING ON HER TESTS ! SHE HAS A REVIEW THAT TELLS U WHAT U NEED TO KNOW. BUT THE TESTS ARE PRETTY EASY, JUST KEEP UP WITH READING THE TEXT BOOK. YOU HAVE 3 WRITING ASSIGNMENTS WHERE SHE GIVES U SOME SPECIFIC ARTICLES TO READ. SHE GRADES THEM PRETTY EASY.
good teacher. provides a review sheet, and she sticks to it reliably for her tests. so, if you read, the class will be easy. her lectures are helpful, but not essential. she appreciates participation. she does not take kindly to consistent late arrival to class, etc.
She is so rude and cold to her students. Lectures are broad and just scope over the material. couldnt stand her
IF U TOOK AP history in high school her class should be really easy....her tests are okay....but she is really rude....and treats u like ur in elementary school i never read the book but i got a B
Took as a telecourse. Was hardr than I expected as I really enjoy the subject. There were only 3 exams and 3 papers to write so it left very little room for error. In all fairness when she said be thorough in your essay-she meant it. I totally deserved the grade I got.
Good Professor. If you do the reading, attend all lectures and take good notes you should pass the class.
Her tests were hard, but the writing assignments were pretty easy. She is very knowledgeable and made attending class actually interesting. If you read from the book and show up for class you will do just fine. She is always available to help if you have any questions. Loved her class and cannot wait to take the second part of this class.
Horrible. Too liberal and slants the class in this direction. If you are not one of her liberal sheeple, she is extremely rude to you.
This prof is very liberal minded.Don't be surprised if a few curse words slip out of her mouth or if she openly talks about smoking and drinking alcohol. She likes to listen to herself talk but she knows how to engage the class and can even be humorous at times. Overall she was an ok professor that needed a lesson in respect.
Just awful. I love history and I have always been able to understand my past professors/teachers. This class was completely different. Prof. Jenkins is awful at lectures and terrible with covering quiz.test material. I never dropped a class in 2 years until this class. I wouldnt recommend it to anyone
She definitely isn't the easiest teacher i've had, but she is by far one of the best. She knows waht she is talking about and expects you to keep up. If you do the reading and pay attention you'll ace the writing assignments. The tests were a bit of a challange but if you study from the study guide an A is not that difficult.
She's a good teacher, she's a little hard. I'm not sure why people think she's rude. I've a big conservative and I didn't feel that she was rude to people. Although, I did feel that the students were very rude in the classroom, perhaps if so many didn't act if they were still in high school she wouldn't come off as so "rude". Anyways, she's good.
Prof Jenkins is an excellent lecturer -- smart, passionate, and engages the class in conversation. She expects her students to be adults, do the work they are assigned, and take responsibility for their own education. I highly recommend her if you want to increase your understanding of history.
absolutely love this professor! she is fun, approachable, and easy to relate to. Always available for help outside of class. wonderful class. took her for 1301 and 1302.
GREAT TEACHER!! With that said there is alot of reading. If you dont mind the reading then this is the class for you. Dr. Jenkins knows her stuff backwards and forwards. She is open to your comments on the subjects.Quizzes and tests are hard but if you read you will be okay. The 7 examples need 4 the exam essay just get them from the outline given.
brilliant professor. very helpful with questions you have about the reivew if you go in before tests. very hard class. I made a C. you must do the readings and you must attend class as so not to miss anything or pop quizzes. study hard for tests and know the details of things. good teacher just VERY HARD!!!!
I love Jenkins.I took her for 1301 & 1302.You will read out of your book after every class only to prepare for next class but that is the only homework she ever assigns. She loves history and makes the subject interesting. She doesnt ask alot from you, just read and study for only 3 tests(little tough) and 3 writing assignments(so easy).Great teacher.
She's an ok teacher. She knows what she's talking about though. You'll probably like it if you like history because she cracks jokes, but if you don't it can be pretty boring. 3 writting assignments and 3 tests. maybe 2 quizzes that's all.
She is unhappy most of the time and it shows. Her test are pretty hard and the material on them is not from class. She didn't really seem to want to be there and it showed in her teaching. I took 3 other history classes and got A's, in her class I got a C. I love history, but she kinda ruined it for me.
Absolutely awful!!! She lectures non-stop and the lectures are not only boring but they have NOTHING at all to do with whats on any of the tests. She's an extremely hard grader even though most of the questions on the tests are from material the class hasn't even gone over. I've never made a bad grade until I took her class. DO NOT TAKE!!!
She is very expressive, but her tests are very hard. Her lectures and tests were not very coordinate. I am a very intellectual individual, but did not do as good as i would have hoped for.
According to ratemyprofessor.com, I was going to be in one of the hardest classes ever. This was not the case. The tests really weren't hard, in fact, she gives you study sheet with everything you need to know. You don't even need to read the book. The writing assignments were incredibly easy. And the quizzes were just bonus points.
I love history and I enjoy her lectures, she definitely knows what she's talking about. However, her tests are REALLY hard! You have to read and study a lot. She gives you an outline but it's very brief and doesn't give details. The writing assignments are pretty easy, and the quizzes are all for bonus points. I'm not sure if I'll pass!
Lectures are very helpful and informative. Focuses on important subject matter. However, lots of reading outside of class is required. Test's are difficult. Doesn't care about attendance but gets very upset over "interferences", both cell phones and tardies.
Things extensively discussed in class are hardly on the test. THings we glossed over are all over the test. Unflexible. Her tests are over motivations of what she calls "major players of the time". I read extensively before the tests and still was stumped with her ridiculous tests because they are essentially multiple choice subjective questions
if you email her questions she does not answer because "she does not have time". She is rude. Tests are misleading semantic nightmares. Talks too fast in class to write decent notes. Made the mistake of taking two classes from her in one semester. She assigns so much reading and almost none of it is on the test.
She is a good teacher who is very enthusiastic about her subject. I have taken every single class she teaches and gotten an A. All you have to do to pass is read, listen attentively in class, take notes, and know the things on her study guide which she goes through in lecture. If you dont read some of it, you wont fail, but read when she says there
Not as hard as others say. Read what you are supposed to, be prepared for quizzes over the readings. 10 per semester. SHE GIVES YOU THE ESSAY TOPIC A WEEK AHEAD TO PREPARE FOR TEST! She won't spoon feed the answers but isnt that the point of college, to think for your self? I took both W Civ I&II and passed with an A
She is one of the worst teachers at this school. Has no idea what it means to be a teacher to a student. Has no respect or manners either. All these other comments on how she is easy & all you gotta do is study is BS. It's probably the nerds saying this. My advice is to take this class with another teacher who interacts with her students & doesn't just teach from slide to slide. Boring & worthless
The commentator from 6/20/11 needs to put his bong down for awhile. Dr. Jenkins offers very interesting lectures, I really enjoyed her class. The exams are fair, either go to class or read the book, you'll easily pass. It's a fun class if there is group participation.
Whoever commented that she isn't a good teacher is ridiculous. Read your book or take good notes in class and you'll be fine. She gives interesting lectures and has a real love for the subject. Her tests aren't difficult if you've paid attention in class ore read your book.
This is my first year in college. I was skeptical about taking her because I didn't do any research before hand on her. She really knows what she is talking about. I barely read the book because I was just too lazy. Come to class so you know what your tests are over, study the sheets and there is no way you will fail. She is a great teacher.
Brilliant lectures. It's like listening to a story. Very entertaining to listen to, but she can go off on tangents every now and then. Otherwise easy class. Reminds you constantly about homework due, and tests etc... Just read the book as she assigns it, and follow the posted outline, and you'll get an A
Mrs. Jenkins was one of the rudest professors that I have ever had. She is constantly yelling at students and rambles on about information that isn't even needed for the course. If you don't understand something she talks down to you for not understanding. She is the only professor that I had any issues with this semester.
She was a great teacher! she went over all the points that would be on the test in class. she basically lectures straight from the book so you don't even have to read. she provides a review that is very helpful but I never did any of them and still got straight A's! she makes boring things interesting & tells it like a story.
She was lively and entertaining! Best points: She doesnt make you memorize dates, textbook use was low, and she gave plenty of extra credit. Bad points: She tends to talk fast, and no slideshow notes. She can also get off subject, especially if asked a lot of questions. Does not take attendence but hates when you come in late so be on time or skip.
JOAN JENKINS IS MY HERO.
Dr. Jenkins has a passion for what she teaches, and it shows each day. She is fair and respectful of other views. Keep up with reading/notes and you will do well.
By far the best professor I have taken at collin. She explains you all the material like it is a story so you do not have to go home and memorize the textbook. If you go through your outline you should do well on her exams. She is a very down to earth kind of person and is never afraid of showing students the reality of our past. You won't regret it
I have never came close to failing a class so much as I have when I took this class. She also lectures until her time is up and then some, you will be packing your stuff to go and she will still be trying to lecture.
One of my favorite teachers ever. Took her for 1301, and I can definitely say she has made me love history. Her passion is easy to see, and she does keep you the whole class but her lectures are entertaining and really go by pretty quickly!! Awesome teacher - writing assignments are easy as well. Didn't read book at all
I hatedd history before taking Professor Jenkins class. She is extremely nice, and witty, and I am never bored in her classes. She does only lecture, but every word out of her mouth is intelligent and well learned. Amazing teacher in my opinion, has real passion for what she teaches!
Joan Jenkins has a fascination for her subject like I have rarely seen, in her lectures she makes the history come alive. She does talk quickly, but as long as you get her attention she will answer your question. My advice for her course is that you attend all lectures and take good notes. These will be key to passing the course and doing well.
Joan Jenkins class was tough. During her class lecture she presented information that interested her and displayed art and culture. Nothing to do with history. THIS IS A HISTORY CLASS not the teach of are and sculpture. I attend all her class lecture and the material she goes over were irrelevant during test.
Very passionate professor but, if your expecting an as A and hate history then don't take this class. Lot to read but, the professor is willing to help as much as we want.
Professor Jenkins is articulate and clearly intelligent but her teachings are not relevant about 60% of the time. Essay prompts are difficult to decipher and knowledge required to complete them is above and beyond what she provides you with. Expect to READ. Better be ready to take serious verbal notes.
Don't take her class. It's a nightmare. If you want to memorized the whole book, take her class.
She's definitely tough. But I personally think she was amazing! She was unlike the stereotypical history professor that is monotone and lifeless, she's animated and enthusiastic about what she's teaching. Definitely quite a bit of reading, it's tedious but it seriously improves your grade! Again she's tough, so don't expect to coast
Okay I took Jenkins thinking it was going to be an easy A, boy was i wrong. Though she is very pasionate about history more than half the stuff she lectures about is not on the test, her powerpoints are just pictures so thats no help aslwell. You have to read the book to pass. If you plan on leaving early or arriving late don't go she hates that.
Horrible professor, I would never take her again. Get to class early, just a few minutes late & she gets mad. Spent 30 minutes of class lecturing us on how horrible our high school education was and that if we weren't good readers & could not comprehend college material then we should just quit now.... Really? I do not recommend taking her class.
MOST BORING PROFESSOR EVER. History is already a boring subject and she just made it worse. Seriously found myself falling asleep in her class all the time. Lectures are long and so boring. Doesn't teach history in an interesting way. Would not recommend her
This professor is certainly enthusiastic about this subject but her lectures don't help. You have to read the book to pass the tests which are specific and detailed. I did not think this class would be that hard but it was. Be prepared to read a lot.
One of the worst professors I have ever had the displeasure of taking. She requires a ton of reading, most of which is not even covered on the test. The tests are some of the toughest I have taken, as she does not cover most of the material on them. I was going to major in history, but she ruined that for me. Would not recommend to anyone.
Took Professor Jenkins history 1301 class and HATED it. She is disrespectful and thinks she is better than everyone else. She will call you out and make you look like a fool. Was not clear on what she wanted from you. I loved U.S history till i took her class. I do NOT recommend taking her class, you will regret it.
She's a great teacher, is interested in the subject. Very organized and let's you know of upcoming test/quizzes ahead of time. All her quizzes are for bonus points and she only has 3 test including the final. There are writing assignments but they are not difficult. Although at times her lectures get boring she really wants her students to succeed.
Joan Jenkins has made me enjoy a History class, and that's difficult. Her lectures are spectacular, she's interested her student's opinions, and if you put the work in you'll do well. She doesn't bend her rules much, but in a way that makes you respect her more. Pretty great Professor, I really hope I get to take Western Civ from her.
Professor Jenkins gives out her syllabus with all of the required readings for both textbooks. You can read ahead if you have something going on which was nice. She is very enthusiastic and makes the class participate in discussions. She reads off of her power point which can be difficult to understand. Notes are essential for this reason.
Not many grades so be carful. Also she thinks highly of her opinion so watch out
While she is very enthusiastic about history, which makes her lectures interesting, they are not very helpful at all for her tests, which are VERY hard! Reading the text is a must. She expects you to know the who, what, where, when and why of everything on the syllabus. Not much homework which means limited opportunity for points.
Great class--have to read but she's very helpful in learning the material which was very interesting even though I'm not a history major
Wow , just absolutely horrible , just expects you to sit there and listen to her lectures and even if you try to notes over her lecture its just horrible dont take this class.
I took her for my very first semester at Collin and I absolutely regretted the decision of choosing her. ANY paper you write for her must align with her opinions or you will get points taken off. She goes on tangents in lectures, so to pass her tests you have to read the chapters.
She is mean, she will be nice and give better score to the student who answer her question on class. Incredible homework with heavy reading. She said no attendance at first, but call name every time. If late, then absent. No note, only few outlines. Everything depends on her lecture. Lots of extra credit, but small grade.
I caught her lying in her lecture. her lectures are just pictures of historical events, and she explains them. have to read or use quizlet to pass. gives clear study guide. she goes on many tangents. in class group writing assignment. interview with someone who was a baby boomer, and in class discussion. she is passionate about what she teaches.
I LOVED Jenkins. She's sweet and genuine. Her lectures are very clear. She engages in conversation, and makes sure we're not bored and don't miss anything important. She gives extra credit; gives feedback and goes over what you missed. 3 papers, 3 bonus quizzes, 3 tests. Easy if you do the reading and show up to class. You won't regret taking her.
Professor Jenkins has lecture based classes and uses power-points to assist her. In Western Civilizations I class, there were 7 quizzes, 3 tests (no cumulative exam), and 1 paper. She likes you to answer things as clearly as possible while also not writing too much. Multiple choice on her tests was hard, so you will need to study a bunch.
Fantastic and passionate professor. She's more than happy to explain any questions, and expects you to keep up with the assigned reading. If you attend lectures and do the readings, you'll do very well. Nothing is on the tests or quizzes she hasn't gone over in great detail.
Dr. Jenkins is a decent history professor. She comes to class prepared for lecture each day, however she often makes small mistakes but tries to report them as "facts" saying most historians agree with her which is often not true. She is very biased against Christianity and will grade essays better if you agree with her point of view. DONT TAKE.
Professor Jenkins is easily the hardest professor I have ever taken. Joan does not teach well at all! She brings plenty of content but non of her lecture will be on the test! TEACH YOURSELF, READ, QUIZLET, Might pass. does not teach well
Its a wonder I passed this class with an A. I definitely would not recommend taking Professor Jenkins again. Her class was extremely lecture heavy and I found it hard to pay attention. I generally resorted to reading the information I needed for tests/quizzes outside of class. You do the same thing every single day. It gets so old.
This is an extremely lecture heavy class, and Professor Jenkins doesn't always go over things on the test in class. My advice would be to look over the outlines before any quiz or test, and make sure to go over any material listed on the outline in the book. Reading the textbook and teaching myself was the only reason I got an A in this class.
Dr. Jenkins' class is very interesting, but also a lot of work. Be prepared to read before every class because you never know when she's going to give a pop quiz. If you pay attention, read, and take solid notes you should be fine.
