Highly recommended. She knows what she's doing and she's very passionate. I learned a LOT in this class.
Great professor. She knows what she's talking about and she truly cares about all of her students. I loved this class, and I would definitely recommend her to everyone.
Smart, deep, and Alluring! I love her class!
She Is The Best!!!! Oh My Gosh If You're Looking For A Good English Professor She Is It!!
Seriously the best teacher I have ever had. The first PhD I have met who is willing to accept the fact that a student might know more about a topic than him/herself. This class is FUN and challenging in ways that force you to have fun. Classtime breezes by because you are actually interested!!!!!
Great professor! She is very smart and choses interesting topics, understands that we are in college and might not be as informed about certain subjects
Awesome Professor! Great class, you won't want to miss a day! you learn a lot and cover great topics, she is clever and intelligent, and is willing to help all of her students.
She is a really good teacher. The topics were really interesting and you learn a lot. She is really nice and tries really hard to make her classes interesting and useful. Highly recommended.
Cool and fun and really, really smart. Great boots.

I am still waiting for her to teach....she is a teacher isnt she? =( i hate it when i ask for help she tells me that i should read the book and know whats going on...i read and im still waiting to learn.....grrrr
Good professor and interesting. LOTS of work and she grades pretty hard. Still, I learned a TON!!! This is a way good class. Everyone should have to take it. Way better than 101 and 102. I wish I'd taken this class sooner than I did.
she is the worst teacher i have had here at stout. all of the comments on her page i think she wrote because i can't see any of them. she has you do the most retarted things that are just totally stupid!!! she thinks she is gods gift to teaching.. she is always right and you are always wrong. i would not reccommend taking her.. she sucks
It's crazy. I absolutely hated her when I first met her!! She was sooo mean! But then, as the weeks went on she really lightened up and I think she's pretty cool!! I love the way she's able to make a joke now and then.. lol.. not too sure about her teaching style yet. I get confused...
I agree with the person below me that she does always think that she is right, and assigns the dumbest papers and assignments. She assigns way too much stuff for one night. She likes to randomly call on people with dumb questions and if you want to get a good grade on a quiz i'd suggest reading the story like 3 times cause the questions r detailed
Joan is an awesome teacher. She is so helpful and intelligent. She knows what she is talking about and lets others have there own opinions. Her teaching style tries to keep people involved which is awesome. Some of the papers we have to write, i agree are a little bit tough, but we are in college, thats the whole point of learning at school.
I think she does write her own comments too, but she made the class somewhat interesting. Just make sure you read and do a really good job on the papers.
I had her for my freshman engish and I thought I took a lot away from this class. Things can be tough, but she is always willing to help. She explains things differently so it's it's challenging at times. But overall, nice lady.
I felt like this class was beneficial. It's difficult when you are assigned one paper right aftre another, but usually she gives you enough time to be able to stay on top of things. I recommend you finish papers as they are assigned so they don't pile up...and make sure there is structure to your paper she emphazises that.
Show up and talk ur ass off!...otherwise if you dont you'll do average...but use her office time to go over papers...very HELPFUL...gives you a thesis on the paper. Last but not least...reading counts for 30% of the class grade...so READ!!!
Joan is a great teacher. I had her for my comp class and requested her for my reading and rel writing. She is weel rounded and knows a lot about her profession. She makes a big effort to connect with students. Before this i had no interest in english, but now it has became one of my favorite subjects thanks to Joan
Children's literature with her was one of my favorite courses! It was so much deeper then I expected, very interesting. She's very knowledgable and very passionate. I wish I could take another literature couse with her!
She does not take time for her students... hurries out of the room after class; say come to my office hours; if you can?t come to her officer hours forget talking to her. She does not answer emails in a timely matter. She also does not explain assignments well, you go in blind. You have to read books that make no sense!
WOW... Dumb class... she thinks everyone is going to teach kids after college and does not add any other major to the class... just Education for children... nothing else! She does not take time for students...
Joan is a great prof, makes it a priority to get to know her students on a personal level which is very helpful as she uses that to help with assignments. Explains things as much as needed, gives more than enough time to complete papers, and is very thorough. Gives extensive feedback which is helpful. Also is always available to students
She is a great prof. Very helpful and will do what ever she can to help you do well. Show up to class and participate. If you don't talk she will call on you, so speak up. She chose interesting readings and ensured that there would be a good discussion on the topic. She was one of the best prof.s that i have taken, i would take the class again
Rude, hard to understand, hated the way classes were done and assignments were not explained well at all
Blatantly biased, puts her political/social/ENVIROMENTAL beliefs into everything. Makes your read books that cater to her beliefs. I paid to learn about english, not global warming.
She can be a tough grader when it comes to papers, but the feedback is always useful. She is quite passionate about then environment and the class I was in was tailored to environmental issues. I learned a ton from her and have her next semester!
Very great teacher! The best english teacher I ever had and taught me the most about how to write well.
She does think she is the****...she uses large vocabulary which makes it hard for you to understand. She even told us that she has an AMAZING vocabulary and she teaches English through Global Warming which requires you to read a book irrelevent to the actualy material she is teaching. Just having us read it for her befiefs. Whatever...
Her class is stupid. She tries pushing her beliefs on use and write papers about global warming. Its the only subject you research in the entire course.
She is probably one of the worst teachers i have ever had. she thinks you are stupid and she calls on ANYONE and makes you feel dumb.
Great class if you're early childhood ed. Lots of little readings from book, but not too tricky. Quizzes easy if you do readings! She writes on board most info you need to know for tests which is nice. Prompt.
She is very arrogant and seriously thinks she is the smartest person on the face of the planet. If you make a comment about something she agrees with she thinks you are a great student, if you interpret a reading differently, you are an idiot and she will let you know. She is detached and not very compassionate.
wolf in sheeps cloths
Helped me when ever I needed it and was always interesting. once you understand what she wants she is very easy.
She was one of my favorite teachers. Although she does assign readings for almost every class period and we had a quiz each day on the readings, I did like her very much as a professor. She was very helpful in every way and I would highly recommend her to anyone!
I would not take a class with her, her lectures are very boring, and she is very arrogant as others said before. She will always use as many big words as possible. I wrote a paper when I did not have a clue what was going on and got 90%, a good start to a class that I dropped last minute to get away from her
She is very boring and it's hard to understand her most of the time. I wouldn't not recommend her.
She is a horrible teacher everyone is failing our class and we have a test everyday!!!!!! don't take her class
DO NOT take her environmental English. She doesn't tell you when you are having quizzes and she gives you a lot of work. She made me hate English and she ruined my life every single Tuesday and Thursday.
She is really hard to understand. I have a hard time fallowing what shes saying. exams are hard. i do not recomend this class.
Wouldn't advise anyone to take this environmental english course.
Joan is great. I've taken two of her courses and would take more if I could. I would highly recommend taking her environmental literature course, she is very passionate. Talk with her and get to know her; she's a great professor and a great person.
Pretty good teacher...Her voabulary makes her instruction hard to follow if youre not interested in the class...Down to earth but likes to show off her vocabulary to the class in regular sentences
Her class is hard but by far worthwhile. You may struggle with reading but she always goes over them in class and explains. Menefee has office hours at a scheduled time and is always willing to help so i would recommend taking advantage of that.
Very good teacher! I would recommend her to anyone who is signing up for ENGL 102. The readings are difficult but if you read them before class and have some understanding for the topic being discussed you are good to go. Make sure to put examples from the readings in each of your essays and get to know Joan. Shes a very nice lady!
She is VERY smart and expects a lot out of her students. There is a good chance your first assignment will be graded harsh but she just wants you to come to her office hours and talk. She is very helpful one on one and is super nice. She really likes to teach and cares about her students.
i did not like her at all she would call on students that did not have their hand up. you have to read every night and be prepared to be called on. tests were always short answers and no multiple choice.
Wouldn't advise anyone to take this environmental english course
Terrible teacher. She will make you hate this course. Readings are all from the 1700's and make zero sense. Papers are extremely hard. DO NOT take this teacher if you are trying to pass this class.
Super nice lady when you get to know her. She is a hard grader but you will learn a lot from her. I am definitely glad I took her class.
I don't hate her, but I don't recommend her to anyone. She puts herself on a pedestal with her irrelevant vocabulary, and the other day she made us make a list of why she is better than us - literally. The readings she chooses for us are difficult, but not too hard. Its a challenging class but with another professor it would be easier.
The first week or two, she shows how strict she is, regarding her syllabus. After you get to know her, you see she's a very nice person. I think people say she's a bad teacher is because she doesn't give up on anyone and she pushes you to strive for what you are capable of. Don't take this class if you don't want to be challenged to do your best.
Expects a lot from her students, but that's what college is all about, putting in the work. By far the most knowledgeable professor I've ever had. Respects her students and takes them seriously. You get out what you put in and at first the way she talks will be really intimidating, but stick with it and you will learn so much.
There is a crazy amount of work for her children's literature class. In order to not look stupid in class you have to read every assignment which is at least 50 pages a night. It is good information but because her vocabulary is so advance she is hard to follow.
She is very tough but always for a reason. either you like her or you wont. no grey area with her. I liked her but i also went to her office hours frequently to make sure my papers were going in the right direction, she offered good constructive feed back. my 102 class was easier than her 101.
There is quite a lot of work in this class but it is spread out over the course of the semester. If you can get her to like you (participation is the key) she will make things much easier for you. If you stay on top of your work and not try to cram it all in at the end like an idiot you will pass this class with flying colors.
She cares a lot about each student learning but it is a hard class that you need to stay on top of your work. I would highly recommend if you want to be a better writer but would not suggest if you are just trying to pass.
She is really cool but you do read a lot and have few assignments. She is so smart and is passionate about what she teaches but it was a difficult class.
First day of the class she gave me two papers and a project due by the next class barely brought up the syllabus.
She makes sure you know she is intelligent. The first half of the semester is spent reading a book about writing papers and discussing it. The second half is spent reading a book on climate change and her pushing her beliefs on you. Do not take her class if you do not have to. We read 50 pages and min. of 300 words/words per week, every week.
She is a tough professor that genuinely wants to push you to succeed. Class participation is very important, if you miss too much class time, you will be confused. Would take her again.
Professor Menefee is a hard grader, but fair. You will have to work for your grade, but if you are decent at English and put in the work, you can get an A. She cares about her students, and gives good feedback.
Discussion based lectures that are really interesting
I liked that she was no nonsense. She tried to pick material that would be beneficial later on. She wants you to learn but makes you accountable for it as well. I really respected her.
She cares a lot about her students and doesn't shove her beliefs down people's throats like so many other professors do. Pretty tough class but overall you learn a lot. I do wish she would focus on Eastern literature as well. Overall, my favorite professor so far.
Very challenging, it was often hard to understand what she was talking about because of her vocabulary. Instead of papers they were called projects since there were different aspects to them, made it confusing. Would rather write an essay. Calls on students every day, quizzes every Tuesday, weekly responses, readings, and essays.
Not willing to work with you if you missed class with good reasoning. Calls on students frequently. Personally I felt like the information given in class had nothing to do with the homework she assigned. Very boring topics.
Get ready for a sore hand! She does not have a textbook book. The only way to prepare yourself is by taking fast notes. The only problem with this is that she talks so fast that one cant possibly get everything down and I promise the only thing you didnt right down, will be on the test!! Get ready for an intense midterm and final! Wow!!
Makes you read a confusing book and write essays on the weird vocab of the book.
One "portfolio" per month, weekly responses, weekly reading, weekly peer-review. She seems to explain things once in a very confusing way, and too fast for notes. Essays are completed almost without help and demands improvement without helping. Good person, terrible teacher.
She addresses the fact that the students are freshman, and that we need a little slack, then grades them as if they already knew how to write research papers beforehand. There's an inappropriate amount of work needed outside of class in order to understand discussions and assignments. Getting an A is impossible unless her class is your top priority
This class requires a LOT of writing, at least one reading assignment a week. Along with the weekly assignments, you also have to submit 3 portfolios throughout the semester, which is also a lot of work. She does teach the process that she wants to see in your writing pretty clearly, and all her lectures are recorded if you miss class or miss notes
The class is big on reading and writing which is to be expected of a literature course. The teacher is available when online and flexible when needed. You learn effectively and have evenly distributed assignments so you aren't overly stressed for a duration of time. You have to be very proactive in communicating if you want good feedback.
Professor Menefee is a very caring and nice professor! She is very thorough with her instructions and gives a lot of good advice and detail while teaching. Definitely a good Comp professor!
if she has to state in the syllabus that her assignments aren't busy work, THEYRE BUSY WORK. Do not take this class if you think it'll be easy and don't take this class if you want to spend all your free time doing her assignments. She's a caring professor about her students but she's not a good one.
Terrible professor. Didn't teach any "English" but instead made you study some book like the bible and base everything on the class around it. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
everything is way easier if you took college prep in high school! lectures are a lot to keep up with (take notes), but as long as you stick to the criteria of each paper you should be ok. reading the book is key but keep track of info from each chapter. I suggest going to the writing center for each paper. -don't use CHATGPT, she can tell.
she was good but she had an odd way of going about things, but overall would take her again it would not be my first choice but not bad.
She helped me thing outside of the box and really expanded my literature knowledge.
She's great if she likes you.
I had Joan in the first semester of my freshman year (2024) and it was rough, do not recommend. Attendance is required, she's a hard grader, LOTS of small group decisions/peer review projects. Asking her questions was difficult as well because she would just rephrase what I asked and her assignment instructions were too confusing.. Good luck.
