She is a very good teacher but her homework is quite difficult. She gives extra credit on some Exams.
does not respond to her e-mail fast enough, does not explain things thoroughly, moves through sections quite fast. the class is OKAY, totally do-able, if you take the time to review things over and practice problems on your own.
She is a good teacher if you're a fast learner, but it seems like she's in her own world and expects you to know what she's talking about.... other then that pretty okay.
Okay, I dunno about all these bad reviews but Joan Scholar's classes are the easiest math classes at Mt. SAC. So she doesn't teach or help with the best of them. She gives homework and extra credit that more than make up for a failing grade. Take it.
Great teacher!
Dropped me, even though I showed up for every class. Was doing badly in class, but wanted to stay in, yet she still dropped me.
God, love her! funny person, very sarcastic.highly recommended!
Not Recommended for people in major course!!! Her class is more likely to learn on your own, NOT from professor.
an excellent professor. clean, organized, and cool. i would only recommand her to intellegent people like me.
at first i thought she was a punk but as the class progressed, i learned to really like her. shes nice and tries hard to keep you from failing. i wasnt doing so well but she helped me out and i did fine.
Teaches well. Helpful and slows down if things are not understood. Tries her best to teach everything clearly; although sometimes i go back to learn straight from the textbook, but maybe cause thats what i usually do. Homework and exams are pretty tough, but math 181 already is. Overall good teacher
Never Recommended for all students. This class has to learn on your own. That's why she give you alot of a homework(you need to solve all odd number of problems). And so many problems on your quize and test.(quize & test-around 15-23 questions.) You have 5 mid-term test, this is crazy. ㅡ,.
I would say she is not organized person and so picky. I got so hard time during all semester. She didn't even explain how to use the maple...but we had to turn in four lab reports in urging time.....
she gives extra credit~~but in order to do well in the class, make sure you have to read the book and do all the homework((although you don't do it,at least have to look over each problem and make sure you know how to do them)), coz the homework problems will occure on the exams n quizs often..
HARD!! if you do not understand then you are screwed.. She teaches way too fast.. If you ask how she got an answer she will give you an attitude like she is better than you.. She tries to act and dress like a youn person but it doesnt work for her.. Nice try
This class is freaking hard..her tests are extremely hard. She kinda makes fun of you if you ask her a question.I strongly don't recommend this teacher!! try finding someone else.
FINAL WAS HARD!!! MAKE SURE YOU TAKE GOOD NOTES AND UNDERSTAND THEM AND THE HOMEWORK! DOESNT REALLY GO OFF OF THE BOOK BUT ONLY WHAT SHE DOES IN CLASS, SO DONT MISS!
informative
Good teacher. Homework isn't due until the day of the exam, she gives you an outline with all formulas to use on every quiz and exam.
This is the best math teacher I have ever had. Quizes once a week. They are real easy. She teaches the easiet ways to do problems. Athletes ok.
Dont take her unless your a really fast learner!
if u want to learn Stat the HARD way STAY OUT OF THIS CLASS! for all of us mundane students, she is the best there is. if u can add and punch numbers into a TI83, THERE IS NO WAY U CAN FAIL THIS CLASS.
She is very easy to understand and has different colored markers that helps when she is breakin down the problems. I actually enjoyed this math class. Great teacher.
This was the most interesting math class. The exams and test were easily if you studied. Keep up with your H.W and it will back you with lots of points. She tend to give extra credit here and there, and the presentation is pretty easy. Overall she explained the concept thoroughly and gave lots (I mean lots) of examples. The best teacher for MATH110H
good teacher will help you out if ask for
most of her test problems are from her examples, which was awesome!you barely get a chance to ask questions becuz she always made herself so clear, she gives a lot of ec and you can drop the lowest hw &quiz grade, and u'll be able replace ur lower exam grade w/ ur final if ur final did better.I wish she teaches other math class too i'll miss her:(
Just one word can explain her class. "Sucks" You better not take this class.
hella good teacher...u have to be dumb to not pass her class. she really understands ur situation if u really need to pass the class, and she does drop the lowest teat score and replaces it with the final if its more. shes a great teachers for those of u who hate math like myself
The class was easier than I expected. She gives outlines and formulas for the test. Homework isn't due until the day of the test. She'll take the time to go over problems you don't understand. The material is hard, but she teaches it well.
She is worst teacher I have taken math class so far. We have a quize almost every day. alots of homework problems. In class? you better study your self with a textbook.
she does NOT take the time to explain when you ask a question in class. she's kind of scary and you go to class praying that she'll be in a good mood. exam and quiz questions are straight out of the homework assignments. not the best teacher but very straight to the point. WANTS you to pass, but doesnt really mind if you dont.
She looked scary at first, but when you start to know her, she is a very nice lady. She is willing to help whenever students ask. Don't trust those bad ratings cuz everybody will have different results.
BAD!!If you want to have a good future dont take her class. If you take her class that means you destory your life!!!
she really uses the book because she copy from it. you dont need to take notes because that's exactly what the textbook says. if you want to test your ability to teach yourself, take her! because she does not teach anything. also, she always makes you frustated. anyway, she sucks. she is the worst teacher i ever met!!!
A nice teacher but hard!if you are not good at Math, don't choose her class. she teaches really fast, sometimes you may not follow up! the quizz is easy, but exams are hard and long! She loves to anwser your any Q, she is helpful, but keep in mind, don't chose her class if you are not good at Math
I frankly don't think she's a very tough teacher at all. Most people who complain how tough she is are those who haven't taken their physics classes yet or who don't know how to think out of a wet paper bag. Half the class is doing bad and it's interesting how most of them aren't asking questions. She can't read your mind if you struggle period.
Very sarcastic... but funny. She lists lots of hmk(BUT you only have to turn in hmk on days of tests and you only have to do ONE problem from each chapter). . . each test has built in extra credit... go to class, do the hmk, she is very willing to help if you just ask her. Text book is needed!
this teacher is the worst one that anyone can take...you might as well lecture yourself..if you ask a question, she makes you feel dumb by making you feel as if you should already know. She does'nt go step by step when she solves problems, she goes straight to the answer and you kind of have to guess where she got the answer from. She is horrible,
This is the most condescending teacher I have ever had. She is always undermining the class's intelligence. She provides no insight on the subject she teaches, instead she regurgitates the textbook work for work. Asking a question in class is tantamount to an open invitation to ridicule. Do yourselves a favor, avoid this "professor".
Everyone on this page is right She is a very easy teacher if you show up and do the work. It's alt of information and she goes out of her way to hlp you pass, but she does make you feel stupid sometimes if you are confused or ask a question. That's why it's important to always be in class and do the work that is given.
She skips a lot of important steps when teaching so I ended up using the book's solutions manual as my teacher. However, her quizzes make sure you keep up with the course. Also, she grades based on work instead of the answers. You can still get full points even if you make small errors as long as you show that you understand the problem.
I took her on fall. It was very hard to understand her lectures. She goes really fast...really fast. Gives an attitude when you try to ask her for help. I did al her HW and a got A/B on my quizzes I never missed her class, and I ended up with a C. It was really unfair.
HORRIBLE PROF. She goes very fast at doing problems on the board, skips steps, if you ask ?'s be ready to be embarresed. She doesnt want to take time to explain some concepts which are the ones she skips. If you do take her class be ready to see a tutor often. She also will give you computer assingments which you dont have to do until 180. goodluck
Took her class for both 180 and 181. She's not the best prof. out there but she's still great. Helps when you need it and is very understanding. Math 180 was a breeze as long as you took the time to understand it. Math 181 on the other hand...very tough course so don't fall behind. Oh btw, the attitude is a front. She's actually really nice.
If you have questions, she'll stay after class and are always in her office during office hour to help. Good professor!
Very helpful, sweet and straight forward. Do not expect to breeze through calc. Exams are based on handouts given during class, and modified slightly. Do the homework and practice the handouts and study guides, and you will easily get an A in her class. I fell behind a little, and still got a B.
Ok this teacher is not good. I tried to learn in her class, she teaches fast, grades and marks off points for silly things, skips steps, and has a nasty attitude. Don't take her unless she is your last choice. Studying helps, but if you don't know what your doing then studying is useless. You need outside tutoring with her because she skips a lot.
She is great! She gives you notes for the exams! Is very helpful with questions! I have told all my friends about her!
Worst teacher ever!!!! She doesn't explain anything clearly and has no actual teaching skills! She expects you to know everything even when you have a question which is ridiculous!
great teacher! i finally passed my math class because of her!
I took it over the winter session so she went through the materials pretty fast. Tests were based on handouts given in class, and homework. She's always in her office so make use of the office hours. Give you partial credits if you show work. I can't say she's the best math teacher but she's not bad!
I can agree with both points of views i've read here, She is pretty hard and does cover material pretty fast, but its nothing out of the ordinary. She's not mean, shes very helpful and understanding, and lenient. When you ask questions she answers your questions but does not explain everything in detail since most we should know already (algebra).
Very fair in grading. She gives the answer keys to ALL exams/quizzes/hw on colorful papers. They help TREMENDOUSLY. Not clear with explanations many times, but very nice. DO her Extra credits; they will help you get the next higher/or the highest grade, no doubt. It's a hard class, not because of the prof, but because of the course.
Nice Lady,,you can tell she knows her stuff really well.she goes thru things fast and she covers a lot of calc stuff in the precalc class, like limits and stuffs. she gives easy extra credit and her quizzes and tests are not that hard plus she doesnt give much homework at all. however, you should do her suggested homework if you want to get an A
She is the easiest math professor i've had. Unlike most other teachers she won't force you with problems from text, instead she writes her own. How well you do in her class will entirely be up to you but she makes it really easy. I mean 17 A in her class easy!!
Interesting teacher. Very nice lady and very clear when talking (no accent). However, she might go too fast for many students. Bookwork is basically OPTIONAL, and she does give a homework sheet with a few problems about once a week. Study guides are very helpful. Extra credit is a must!. She's willing to give hints during exam, so take advantage!
She is very helpful and accommodating. If you are having trouble she will make herself available. Her class is not very easy, but if you're not expecting math to be challenging you probably should not have a math based major. If you do have a math based major it's better to have a teacher who teaches you to think.
Her class is not easy, but she teaches students how to really apply the methods and techniques of mathematics. She is always willing to help. Her lectures are fast paced but you get a lot of examples. She doesn't assign a lot of homework(only requires one problem from each sec) but does suggest problems to try. Overall good choice. Smart lady
The best Math professor I've ever taken! She's crystal clear in explaining the material, very helpful when the students come up with questions, and very fair on grading. She posts the exams from previous semesters on her website as a study guide for the students. Make sure you take note in class and study from the exams though
She's not easy, but she practically lives on campus and is SUPER HELPFUL! I HIGHLY recommend taking her. She will even help you during an exam if you ask her something. Assumes you're responsible enough to do the homework and only checks one problem from each section.
She is very difficult! I tried taking her Summer 180 class but it was too much too fast. However she is an amazing teacher!
First let me state that the material covered in this class is nothing to be scared of and is clearly covered. However, if you do not go to her office hours and study in front of her office then you will lose points and you will be neglected. For your information you can get 10 extra points if you buy a ticket for her fund-raising concert.
She is very hard. She tries to clarify, but the test is harder than quizzes. Unless you are talented in math, you will struggle if you take her class.
She is Extremely difficult to get pass. She is helpful, but her test is much much harder than the examples she gave in class. Take her at your own risk. Coming from a student attended all her classes, did every homework.
Professor Sholars is AWESOME! She is by far the best math professor I've had thus far. Her class is quite difficult, but she helps you understand concepts very well and gets you ready to take higher level math classes. If you're willing to put in a lot of time and effort into your math classes, then she is definitely the person to take.
Prof. Sholars is not the 'easiest' professor, but her grading is very fair. She gives tons of opportunities for extra credit, and other ways to boost lacking test scores. She will make sure that you understand the material, and challenge your intellect. Highly recommended.
I've dropped Calc. twice so I finally decided to muster up the courage & pull through during the winter session.I am so glad that I took it w/ Professor Sholars. If you care enough about your grade to approach her & ask for help, she will help you as much as possible. She also offers some extra credit.Don't slack on HW & study. An A is very achievable
Shes is very helpful. I love her. But she is not easy. Take it if you are willing to put it 220 percent effort. I worked my butt off and got a B.
She practically live on campus, so it's easy to ask for help. However, it doesn't mean she is easy. I barely pass.
Take her if you want to learn. Avoid her if youre not gifted at math.
She's really helpful but difficult on the exams.
Make sure you take note in class and study from the exams.
I will say that her study guides are pretty accurate for tests, but other than that you're pretty much screwed unless you REALLY understand math.
overall her teaching skills are very low. She simply places exaples on the board with poor explanations. she skips steps, and even when you ask a question, the answer does not help you at all. I love math, but I cannot teach myself calculus.
I got a straight A+ in her class, just because I have learned everything before. I assume, if I understand nothing and take her class, it will be very hard to follow, unless you read the materials. However, she is great to offers so-so-so many extra credits, even if you attend a fundraising show in SPRING.
She said it herself.. Math160 is the toughest class you will ever have. She uses almost every skill you learned from the past and incorporate almost all of them into a single problem, sometimes with the new materials. That's the most challenging thing about her. She's a "real" math professor, I'd say she is the smartest professor in Mt.Sac.
imo, the best math teacher I ever had. She's extremely helpful if you have any questions, so if there's something you don't understand, ASK! Lots of extra credit available. Nevertheless, calculus is always hard.
Sholars is a FANTASTIC professor and I wish there were more math classes after 285 that I could take with her. She's not trivially easy, but she's very fair and is always open to questions. Take her.
Math 110 is supposed to be hard, but Sholars makes it easy to handle because she gives out all formulas needed for the entire course. What you need to do is only finding out which formula to use. She provide EC for every HW, TEST, EXAM. Classwork - 1Q only for each section. Very very very essay class! Got >100% for overall grades! Recommended!
Don't take Sholars' 285 class! True that she gives extra credit, but she is so unclear about concept, and it is very hard to follow. I got A/B in 180, 181, 280 but got a C in Sholars' 285 class. DO NOT TAKE HER if possible!
A fairly easy class with lots of EC. If you decide to attend, class, do homework, and study for quizzes and exams, you should be getting an A. You don't have to memorize formulas, only know when to apply them and interpret results.
Shes not a bad teacher if you actually study. Just take notes in class whether someone asks a homework problem from the packet or from the book. I got a B in her summer 2012 class. She does take out your lowest quiz and homework grade... she also replaces your final exam grade with your lowest test grade.
She has REALLY high expectations, which can be motivating (to the right students) to do even better than we thought we could. She teaches the calculus track so she doesn't start out by holding your hand- expect to do A LOT of studying on your own, lecture and class notes are NOT ENOUGH. Overall if you're already a motivated student, she's great.
Personally, I don't really like her teaching style. She only does one example of each section, and then just throws you some problems. But the class is not too bad if you're good at math. If you're not good at math, then you have to put some time in the study. Also, if you're trying to get a Math 181 class, go to her class; she adds everyone
I thought Sholars was very easy when taking her 180 & 110. When I take 285, I find that Sholars is quite unclear about expressing Math concepts. She simply copies and pastes all theorem and definition on the board. Everyone struggled badly. Well.. I still get an A anyway :)
I took Tran's 181 and I got an A and. I feel although tran is hard, at least he's very clear and he never gives the problem he didn't go over;Sholars is complete opposite. All she does is just copy some definitions from all kind of books to the board(hand writting) then suddenly do 1 example. And her text will always have some surprise problem.
Excellent professor. I love her teaching style. She's simple and gets to the point. She doesn't waste her time on repeating the same kinds of problems a million times and she skips elementary steps. Obviously one has to put in a lot of effort into this class. Another thing, she offers a lot of extra credit. Highly recommended.
The best math professor I have ever had. She has transformed the way I approach math. She makes it so simple! She corrected the mistakes all my math teachers made when teaching me. Most math teachers are so caught up in formulas and definitions that they forget to actually teach. I love how she's semi-cold because it scares the weaklings. Take her!
Teaches fundamentals. She will not spoon feed you. She will teach you enough to understand the reason WHY you are doing what you're doing. You know exactly what she's going to put on exams because she lets you study old exams. Worksheets help tremendously. Many don't like her but I personally like her teaching style. Spend lots of time studying.
She is hard and expects you to do the work -- You must put your best work in the course but it pays off. I feel like I learned something and am more prepared to calculus.
She's a great professor. She may not be easy on you, but it's for your best interest. I felt prepared for the worst. As long you pay attention to her lectures and put in your best effort, you're sure to pass the class.
Professor Sholars is perfect for 280, she taught us well and clearly. Make sure to do all the hw, past quizzes, exams and notes. Seems a lot but it is worth it. She makes you practice so you understand. Very helpful, caring and wants everyone to do well. Go to office hours and ask questions. If you want to actually learn math take Prof. Sholars!
I took her for 160, 180, and 181. I love this lady. She has impacted me in ways she doesn't even know. Don't be scared of her. She's just a tough-lovin Texan. THE most dedicated professor I have ever had. She puts her students first (sometimes staying for 12+ hours). This class is HARD, but it's calculus people! It's your duty to learn the material
I am by no means good at math, but Prof. Sholars makes statistics SUPER understandable. You can tell she really wants you to pass with atleast a C, (and she says so herself sometimes) because she understands that not all of us are math majors. I dont think her upper level classes are as easy, this review is solely based on her stats class.
bad teacher. dont take her
she's amazing! i did The Sandra Method and got an A in 180 and 181.
She is the best professor I have ever had! I had to go into her office a lot and she was always supportive and helpful and she answered all of my questions with respect!
Fair grader! do hw and past exams. B is easy. A is tricky. Go to her office hours for help. she is always there.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS DURING SUMMER/WINTER! She will torture you with tons of homework from the book and quizzes and exams that are only a repeat of her old previous courses because she hardly teaches during these intersessions for she is unorganized herself.
Don't be discouraged to take her. Yes, she is difficult, but you become a better student because of it. All of the past quizzes and exams on her website were very helpful as well. Her lectures are sometimes hard to follow, but she is always helpful during office hours. I am glad I took her because now for the first time I actually enjoy math.
If your looking for an easy professor then Sholars isnt for you!! In class she goes at a fast pace but she can be very helpful during her office hours so take advantage! Also all of her old test and quizes are online so take adavantage!! Study hard and I mean STUDY!! Overall her class is difficult but you need to work for a good grade. Good Luck
Sholars is decent at teaching the subject, but I have had teachers that are much more clear and helpful with their lectures. My main problem is with how unnecessarily hard she makes everything. Even if you perfectly understand all of the concepts, you can lose a LOT of points due to extremely tricky or awkwardly worded questions. I found it unfair
She is good professor. She is willing to help her students even if she is busy at her office hour. I apprciate the way she truly cares of her students if they have any problems. Just pay attention on her lecture and stop complaining.
Expects you to master the material right after she shows one example. You are expected to be a master of all information you had previously learned prior to the calc class. Not the clearest professor. Would not take again.
she had given 9 quizzes and 4 exams and final exam was cumulative. she would give problem in quiz or exam that might your weakness. I thought the exams were hard. she did not teach much. many time is on your own.
Summer. No idea how i passed with an A, but YOU WILL HAVE TO STUDY ALOT! Im serious, everyday! Hmwk issued is legit graded for points, book hmwk not so much. Tests will have some tricky questions, and can be looooong. 2 simple comp labs. QUIZES!! Very nice and is readily available after class. FAST pace, but will deff help if you ask. Good Luck fam
Tough for summer. Exams were two parts, the first part had integration-definitely overkill . A lot is collected during the week atleast two quizes a week/homework packet. Wished she didn't give quizes, so that she wouldn't have to cram too many sections. Overall, she is good and quizes are from in classes problems ( tricky ones) .
grades way too harshly, randomly disappears and misses lectures without even short notice. exams are fair, but she picks the hardest questions that take forever to answer on the test. lectures are useless. avoid whenever possible
She keep skipping steps during lecture and expect student to understand; However, student have to ask for her to TALK about the steps she skip. Tough grader and homework is not like you will get full score if you try to do it, she grade it like a quiz!!
I really like Joan Scholars. She is awesome to be around and more vibrant than 95% of 20 somethings I know. She knows her stuff. However, her tests were really hard. Many of the test questions were toilsome. She required her students to memorize trig identities, something I had done back in HS. It was difficult to commit Stokes + trig to memory.
Sholars is one of those professors that you cuss out in your head every day during the semester. You wish you didn't take her. You wish you would've taken someone else. You wish you didn't have so much work. I recently graduated as an Electrical Engineering major and have used a ton of what is learned in this course for my major. She is worth it.
to be honest, she teaches very well. Her examples and lectures are easy to understand. She does skip steps but will answer when asked. However, she is a tough grader. Her exams have 2 parts and tricky and usually kill your grades. She skips 1 or 2 classes too every semester. If you are a math major, def a yes. Otherwise, take some one else.
Nice person, but not a nice professor. She creates a hostile learning environment & seems annoyed if you ask questions. Additionally, she wont actually explain the material she'll just show the arithmetic. Her exams are a lot tougher than her quizzes & lecture notes. Most of the material is straight out of the book. I'd highly suggest someone else
She is very nice person plus very nice professor , she show the work for math in class and explain it a bit . If she will explain all the reason behind those math , that will already beyond this class level which is something due with physics , and she dont force you to finish tone of homework , Exam are mostly from textbook , so do her hw ez clas
Homework every day, forces you to stay on track instead of doing all the homework the day before the exam like with other professors. Focuses more on real-world examples and applied math. Great for physics and engineering majors. Make sure your algebra is up to par, that's where she gets you.
she lacks a passion for teaching, skips classes without notifying students. her teaching includes writing on the board and solving one or two examples per an entire section. there are more quizes than actual teaching. you are really on your own most of the time. avoid whenever you can if your goal is to understand the material and keep GPA high.
Professor Sholars is an excellent professor and aslo a nice and humorous person. If you follow the guideline, take notes, and do the homework, then this class is not that hard. She provides you a lot of extra exercises resources that you can practice, and she is willing to help you if you have any question.
