One of the worst teachers I have ever had. Very condescending. Your opinion is always wrong according to her. Never worked for an actual police department but was a probationer officer. Not very law enforcement friendly. You WILL need to read the book, can't pass without it. She's also very rude. Don't take her unless you want a C or lower.
I think people made her worse than she is. Bad in the beginning of the semester, but was more laid back and funny toward the end. She is super strict and has high expectations, but her lectures are thought provoking/interesting. I like her view on how the system actually is. She is confident and I think she teaches some really valuable stuff.
Joanie is a great teacher. The reason some people don't like her is that she won't take students being apathetic about their education. She liked the people who had a good attitude and I got an A. I learned a lot and would recommend her
Prof. Dybach is one the best teachers I've had yet. She will always question your opinions, but not to be condescending or rude. It's to teach people to think outside the box, which she explains the 1st day. If you do your work and actually participate in her classes you will succeed there. Also, go to her office hours, she's so nice and helpful.
Class was more like a history class on how each race was treated. Ridiculous. She made off subject comments to people. RUDE. I'm talking about Fall 2013. Anyways, would not recommend her at all
She is not very clear on her expectations. She randomly came up with a project in one day that consumed most of the class. This project counted for much of the final grade but was not on the syllabus. Rude when you approach her with questions. However she is very intelligent.
Grades hard, more of a history class and sometimes makes it confusing to understand. When she knows ur a smart person, she will give good grades. I wrote almost exactly the same thing on an assigned and i got a 310 and everyone else got 1010. It was almost identical too. Not satisfied at all.
Dybach is a great teacher many people don't like her because she speaks the truth. If you are a good student you will do well in her class she is there if you have questions and need help. Lectures are long but if you listen very interesting. she is a funny teacher but a tough grader.
Joanie was and is the best teacher I've ever had. She is straight forward and very clearly outlines her expectations in the beginning of the semester. Show up, do your homework, and study for the exams. Class participation is a must! She never says "right" or "wrong", she encourages all outlooks and encourages students to think outside of the box.
No one is passing this introduction to Law Enforcement. Why? She is a terrible teachers. A regular office was in class and had a F. Ego tripper
This teacher is one of the hardest teachers I've had yet. She is very rude when it comes to students asking questions, she comes off strongly and makes us feel like we are stupid, even if the concept of asking questions is to learn. She does not offer much extra credit which leaves you in point blank when it comes down to your final grade.
Dybach is cool and if you're not disruptive and you participate she will noticibly appreciate your addition to the conversation. If she questions what you say it's because she's prompting you to keep digging into the conversation. Her lectures hardly pertain to the tests and the best thing to do is go to her office hour and discuss class topics.
Let's put it this way very easy class if you can do it her way. She is always right no matter what, and if you don't write papers her way you won't pass. I got a B in English 1A and for her my papers weren't correct.. All you do is listen to her talk about her life and watch movies. Took one test and the finale and had a paper every week.
If you are looking for an EASY A, don't take any of Joanie's classes. Expect to work hard, and read EVERYTHING she assigns from the book. (The tests are based off of the book and lectures) Don't ask questions that you could have found the answer to yourself. Take advantage of her office hours if you need help. Participation counts. Loved her class.
Best teacher I have encountered at the SRJC. If you want to go out into this Criminal Justice field, she let's you know what to expect and makes it tough to prepare you for what is out there. However, she cares about her students and helps when you need it for sure. Stay on top of your due dates! She is not your mom to remind you.
Terrible teacher... Filed a formal complaint
If you actually want to do well in the criminal justice profession, take Joanie. Yes, she is a hard teacher, yes her class will push you to your limits, but it is worth it. I have come out of her class knowing more than I have learned in any other class. Go to class, do the work, and study for tests and you will be fine. She prepares you for life!
AWFUL! Worst teacher/class I've had so far. You watch a movie basically every class is. But I guess movies are better then her lectures. If you don't share the same beliefs as her, get ready to fail. Showed up to class every lecture and did almost every assignment. F's. I'm talking like writing an essay and getting 3/15 as a grade. Who does that?!
I was excited to take this class, was fresh out of High School and was ready to learn. But, I wasn't ready for this. Wouldn't recommend her if it's your first semester. Not helpful or approachable if you have questions. Very test heavy and you WILL need to use your text book ALOT. Don't take this class unless you want a terrible time.
Very tough grader! She has a lot to teach you but can make expectations very confused. took her class twice and got a D both times. besides this class my major GPA is 3.0. If you miss a class she might not let you know that the next class has been cancelled. Overall I would avoid this professor even though she is very smart.
Worst teacher you will every take!! Unfortunately she is the only AJ 25 teacher. No one will pass her class. Test are about the book that is never gone over in class and she never provides a study guide. Her paper guidelines are unclear and then she grades you very hard on an unclear paper. Be prepared to watch a lot of movies.
The most frustrating class I've ever taken. Literally set up for failure. She reviewed little/no material in class, then lectured us on not understanding the text for quizzes. She re-wrote the syllabus halfway through and had us start over. I basically taught myself. I think she gave us the final as a take-home as students complained. Not worth it.
Taking this teacher was my worst experience!! she was very tough, even if you try it is not enough... get on her good side maybe you will pass, her teaching style is pretty good but she will give you credit if you agree with the same ideas she does.
Dybach is the best teacher that I ever had. She will question your stance on hot topics in an effort to make you really consider what you believe. She has a ton of experience in the Justice System and knows that if you can't back up what you believe then you are going to fail. She prepares you for the real world. Class participation is mandatory.
If I had not taken this class online, I definitely would have gotten a B or maybe even a C. Even with a rubric on the assignments, she changes the way she grades each time. I wrote nearly identically structured responses and one time I got 100% and the other time I got 50%, kind of ridiculous. Definitely take online if possible
Nothing you turn in will fit her idea of good enough. All work is done from one text book and all answers are easy to find, define, and understand. Yet nothing pleases this woman. Do not attempt to ask questions because she cannot be bothered and will only answer by insulting. She is Not helpful.
She was a the worst teacher I have ver has she was horrible and here personality was really bad pleas stay away from her
she is straight up with what she wants and as long as you do the work and put the work into it youll pass. she is straight up with what she wants and its helpful!! if you pay attention and do your assisgnments you got it. make sure you know HER definition of a crime
I just don't think that I can do much more than I am. I try my best to write thoroughly and apply the law to my assignments, even the discussions seem to be difficultly graded. Not sure if she is aware its a basic intro class and most students are trying to go into law enforcement not law school. Just really feel inadequate no matter how hard Itry
Had to drop her class, would never have measured up to her standards. I would not recommend this class to anyone.
She is not going to hold ur hand. If you show up do the work & listen to her feedback you will get a good grade. She offers extra credit for doing things that will actually benefit ur career (going on ridealongs/court cases). I got a D+ on the midterm & still got an A in the class. If you do all assignments & don't give up, it is MORE than possible
Believe the negative reviews about this instructor. I was diverted into her class when my paralegal program's classes were cancelled. My polite and respectful emails to her were returned with hostility and indifference. She does not care about students or teaching, just penalizing and her rigid rules. I need these units, but not from her.
Do NOT take any courses with this professor. She is rude and not motivating. I had emailed her for assistance regarding the textbook and she was very hostile and disrespectful in each response. Not only was she rude and unapproachable, she had stated I was unprepared and those who want to pursue Criminal Justice have to pay attention to detail.
After taking classes over 20 years, this is the worst instructor (if you can call her that) I have ever had. She is incredibly rude, unfair and negative. It is almost as if she wants you to fail. I put a lot of work into this class following all her criteria and she gave very negative unhelpful feedback. She sets u up to fail. BEWARE!
If you do not meet her ridiculous standards she will not let you know. Huge letdown in faculty after starting off with great, respectable professors.
Rudest teacher I have ever had. Her assignments are not difficult but if not done the exact way she wants them then she will give you half credit. If she expects elaborate answers and responses then assign elaborate question. Makes no sense.
Unreasonably tough grader.
I have had good experiences with my teachers my whole life, until Dybach. Probably the toughest and most unreasonable teacher in CA. Dont take her class if you want to pass. Seriously.
Worst teacher I have ever had.
I love criminal law, I walked in her class and she told everyone no one likes her. She doesnt care to hurt your feelings. She doesnt teach you some stuff. So that you have to go to her tutoring to learn the rest. Doesnt respect the fact that we have work and other classes too. Yells at you all the time. Sends you home to do 50+ pages of reading.
Incredibly rude and disrespectful. Doesn't realize that this is an intro class not a law school class. Unhelpful and rude responses to emails for help and clarification.
if you ever want to fail take this class
Great Teacher. Took her AJ21 summer class and am currently taking her AJ54(a) class.
This teacher has extremely unrealistic grading criteria... its no surprise that 85% of students that reviewed her wouldnt take her class again. She will give you half credit for assignments if your answers dont meet her idea of the right answer. She harps on using evidence to support your opinion but the readings she assigns are one sided.
If you want to fail a class take her, seriously. She is the most unhelpful and unrealistic teacher that I have EVER had. And I am not writing this because I upset that I didn't get a good grade in the class. Classes are supposed to be about making mistakes and learning. Dybach expects you to be 100% knowledgeable about the class before you take it.
Very bad at communicating. Hard grader. Very straightforward, unlike any other SRJC professor. Not at all flexible, even with the kincade fires or mix up with her module.
The biggest issue iv had with her is the fact that I met with her in person to ask how does she want her responses to look like. Lots of the other students were writing novels it seemed like, however she told me, "one or two sentences should be enough, just get to the point". So I do that, then I get a 2/10 on a discussion bc I "needed more effort"
We didnt have class for 2 weeks due to fires and power outages. Instead of changing the due dates (like every other professor) she kept the due dates the same and then wont give you a straight answer on when they are do. Only missed 2 assignments and have a D+. Very hard to make up ground and very easy to lose it. Do not take u less you want an F
Worst teacher ever!!! Period.
I have been in school 18 years and this has to be the worst teacher I've ever taken
This professor is the most random grader I have ever experienced. I worked SO hard on a project and SHE GAVE ME A 3/10! I was actually angered. She also just never gives full credit. I would do everything she would ask and still consistently get 7 or 8/10 on assignments where I knew I deserved full credit. I plan to file a complaint about her.
I was intimidated by the negative feedback from mates . She is hard, strict, expects you to write like a justice student, but gives great feedback. It will be hard, but so worth it ! Her intellect and strong approach to teaching is inspiring. Prof. Dybach intimidates me , but I really enjoyed being taught by her. DybachLearning
She is unreasonable with grading, she says I dont make sense at all, yet I got all my answers from the book!!! Her questions for discussion for online doesnt even correlate with what you have to read for the chapters, literally took me forever just to find common ground and use a quote! The tests are pretty reasonable though luckily.
Her grading is inconsistent. Her knowledge of the criminal justice system is lacking. Her knowledge of the English language and grammar is lacking. I wish I could cut her some slack, as we are now taking online classes due to COVID. However, it is hard to answer questions online when the professor cannot even ask them clearly. Just my thoughts.
I love her! she is tough but if you really want to learn, she is the key. I made the mistake of taking classes with someone else this semester, oh boy do I regret it. It's throwing my money away and not learning a thing. She is tough but it has been a privilege being her student. I will take her courses over any other prof. at this JC.
literally dont take this unless you wanna fail, she doesnt take late work and doesnt care about your personal life and mental health and how it may affect your performance
I wish there was options for having a different instructor to teach this class. She grades too harsh.I've been trying really hard to do everything I can to get good scores on the discussions but nothing you do seems to be good enough. You will most likely always receive a 4/10 or less. If she knows you're struggling she does nothing to help you.
I like to give teachers multiple chances, but all semester she has been terrible. During her 30 min lectures once a week, half of her lectures were in her car, when she didnt cancel. Her feedback is rude and you NEVER get 100% on an assignment because her grading changes every time. Please dont take her class, please
I would advise not taking her while classes are online. The way she grades participation isn't logical. She gives you a code to right down every week and to put it in your next assignment so they don't add up ever and you are probably not getting the points you deserve. She is also prejudice and has no sympathy at all. She told my class we'd fail.
She is one of the worst teachers I have ever had in my entire life. It doesn't even matter that you've spent hours working on an assignment she will give you a 4/10. Her zooms are so pointless (and shes in her car) she just rants and tells the class that our work sucks and we have bad grades. I don't know how shes been a professor for so long.
I was looking forward to taking my first criminal justice class, but this semester has been horrible. Even though everyone is new to online classes Professor Dybach doesn't give any leniency. She grades extremely harsh and gives rude feedback on homework. She doesn't teach anything during class time and expects us to do well. Worst teacher so far.
If you are looking to learn new information, then do not take ms. Dybachs criminal justice classes. She did half of our zoom classes while driving and rambled about topics that do not apply to the information we needed to learn for our quizzes. She also gave minimal feedback on homework. Ms. Dybach is by far the worst teacher Ive had.
I can't say enough good about professor Dybach! she put a lot of effort into this class. She expected a lot of her students, but was a fair grader.
Professor Dybach does not care about you as a student. She taught our class 4 times over the course of our spring semester in a CAR, lagging out multiple times. She wants to get paid and do her job. I wholly do not recommend Dybach as a professor. I only got an A because I tried very hard and did all the reading, her class is tough.
Despite the other ratings, I really like Prof. Dybach. Sure she is stern and challenging, but so is the criminal justice system. She prepares you for it and is always open for questions. She is willing to meet with you outside of class just to discuss life goals. Tough love is how I would describe her teaching.
this is actually the first time I used ratemyprofs I found myself on this website because I noticed that my grades on homework were so low it became like a pattern then I started reading the reviews on this teacher and pretty much all the bad ones are unfortunately true. one of the worse teachers I have had don't be like me check ratemyprof first.
Worst Experience Ive Ever Had With Any Teacher. I Didnt Know About Rate My Prof Before. But I Do Now! Dont Be Fooled By The Few Nice Things People Have Said. Dont Take Her Class, Unless You Enjoy Unpredictable Grading. Just Dont Do It!! If I Could Rate A Zero I Would.
Professor Dybach is very strict. You must show up to class, turn in your homework ON TIME, stay on topic, and most importantly read the syllabus! I never once spoke in our zoom meetings because I did not want to be embarrassed in front of the class. I highly recommend carefully re-reading the syllabus and material before asking her a question.
horrible teacher. i have been studying adminsitration of justice for three years, have gotten a's in every other class and she might fail me. she claims canvas problems aren't her problems, and isn't accessible. had to basically fight her to meet with me over cases. i cannot emphasize enough to not take her classes.
Professor Dybach's criteria of what is expected for assignments is vague and confusing, by the time she grades the assignments you're already on the 3rd one before you get feedback to let you know if you're doing it right. Very tough grader, wish she wasn't the main professor for these courses.
Prof. Dybach was extremely tough for no reason. Seems like she likes to tell students what they've done wrong (with no clear explanation of what was wrong) was very intimidating and not kind at all, was not helpful, and almost expected you to know exactly what you were doing, with almost no direction. Highly recommend avoiding her at all costs!
This teacher is very tough and there's a reason for her score being so low. You could be producing A+ work and getting Cs in her class. Her expectations are unrealistically high. She would praise you on something one day and the very next assignment that you do the same way, she would criticize you (which really makes no sense).
Awful instructor who does not seem to care about her students being successful in her class. Does not provide clear instructions for homework. Purposefully creates assignments to be impossible to get full credit, or hides information to force students to reach out to her. Emotionally & verbally degrading to her students. Oppressive teaching style.
When I first started to take this class I saw what Rate My Professor has to say and I saw all the bad reviews and I didn't believe them thinking "oh maybe they are just students who just didn't like this professor for no reason". But I was wrong, they were ALL true. You could be doing 11/10 god-tier writing and still end up with a 6/10.
She doesn't care about helping students succeed. Her canvas exams are full of typos and she doesn't take the time to personally grade written answers on the exam. The assignment instructions are vague and unclear. She tells students that she will decide whether you are cut out for the field or not. SRJC needs to do better.
No good feedback, and she expects you to read her mind. Only way to make it through the class is to constantly email and go in for office hours. Not worth it.
She is a strict grader but now taking a second class by her, it's really based on just following the directions and putting thought into your work. I went from getting half credit on things to now full credit. I initially became irritated but she really knows what she is doing and it's a good class when you get the hang of her grading.
This professor is on one hand a great educator and very smart in person, but on the other hand her online class makes me want to rip my hair out. She does not give good feedback at all and basically insults you in her rubrics. She has you do discussion posts asking your OPINION, then marks you down because apparently your opinion is wrong
like this comment if you think Dybach should be fired !!
Dybach creates an atmosphere inside her class that is not student-friendly. She will mark you down without a good explanation or markdown tests even if you got the correct answer. Not sure why she is like this. SRJC needs to do better.
I've had to take 3 classes with her because she is the only professor who teaches said classes. She will ask for your opinion on a matter then if your opinion differentiates from her own she will doc you points even with proper textbook citations. She can be very demeaning to her students without reason or provocation. SRJC needs to replace her.
This professor homework and class is actually really easy, but its just unfortunate that she's the only one teaching it. The work is quite simple, but when she grades it she gives you feedback like you didn't even read the rubric she puts up, even though you did everything the rubric ask for. Her grading style is like a dice role its either 1-6/10.
I can write an entire essay on why you should not take this professor. Please don't take this professor, she makes learning so unfun...
She grades completely contradictory to her rubrics. You can clearly point out in your assignments the answers to her questions and she still gives you a 0. Horrible and inconsistent. Prepare to fail. I could write an essay on how she plays mind games and seems to purposely try to fail students.
Honestly shocked that she's still allowed to teach. Her rubric for grading is seriously messed up and feels impossible to please. All textbook based; she didn't teach anything herself. Impossible to reach, she never responded to any of my emails looking for support in the subject. Only advice I can give is to drop the class while you can and run!!
Honestly, the teacher puts little to no effort into the class. Unfortunately she is the only teacher for this class and is severely lacking. I've learned a lot because I've read all the material and watched the videos she has provided. She grades incredibly hard and I have no idea how to please her, I've contacted her and she does not help!
Unclear rubric, and when asking for clarification she told me just read the directions again instead of answering any questions. The quizzes are timed so I was always running out of time even though I was doing it without any notes or textbook.
Extremely strict policies, no sense of humanity when in need. Extremely aggressive via email and hard to work with.
Tough grader
Horrendously rude. You will not impress her because she grades off of criteria that aren't in her instructions. Your best bet to pass this particular class is to take the insults and settle with a B or C, possibly worse. I thankfully got my grade removed from my record, but either way I still remember her name perfectly from two years ago.
Overall, a tough grader who doesn't give good feedback. Lays out all expectations in the rubric and not the instructions of the assignment. Screenshot everything you do because when mistakes are made on her part, don't expect an announcement or her to be professional. In all, I won't be taking classes with this teacher going forward.
