She's a good teacher, but you have to study, her lectures are all slides, and she always gives her own opinion and thinks that it's better than everyone else's. Her tests are fine if you study it's all slide identification and an essay.
I took Dr. Gulizio's LAT 506 class and really enjoyed it! She's very friendly and helpful. She makes you feel comfortable and never makes you feel stupid if you don't know something. Would recommend.
Dr. Gulizio is so adorable. She really awards effort in her class. Showing up is mandatory, but when reading Latin, it's just a good policy to regularly study it as such. There's daily homework, but she doesn't grade it for correctness, only to help your understanding of the material. She's really sweet, too, so if you're struggling, just say so.
There are only 2 midterms and a final and they're not multiple choice. There's a lot of reading for the class and you need to pay attention to the lectures, especially the info about the artifacts. However if you work hard and improve on your tests Dr. Gulizio takes that into consideration when assigning your final grade.
This was not an easy VAPA. Must work to get a decent grade. Makes you buy a whole bunch of books only to read a few pages from it. You must study hours for the tests and learn specific details over 40+ artifacts. I was a big fan of Ancient Greek history but I studied way too much for this class when I should've been focusing on my core classes.
Definitely the hardest VAPA around. I loved Ancient Greek Civilization, but this class really makes you work for it. Get ready to read a lot of primary sources and memorizing facts, dates and names of artifacts shown in class. Gulizio is sometimes hard to find, but she will answer everyone of your questions if you ask them.
Before last semester I had absolutely no interest in Ancient Greece, but Dr. Gulizio almost inspired me to switch my major to classical civilizations. She doesn't take attendance but it's necessary to go to class if you want to pass the exams (they're 99.9% lecture based). Overall the course was fantastic and she was SO helpful. Go to office hours!
No curve for the grade. The hardest class I had taken for core requirement...(Culture expression, human experience and Thought). Really really take it in caution if English is your second language. I found a hard time to understand the materials and lectures, but thankfully Dr. Gulizio was so helpful that I didn't give up. NO CURVE for the grade.
I really enjoyed her lectures!!! People complained about the readings, but compared to other classes her reading assignments were easy. Requires several books. Attend class and take good notes, she knows her stuff. If you do bad on your first test and improve on the rest she takes that into account, but no curve. Visit her during office hours!!!
Took her class for Intro to Ancient Greece, which counted as a VAPA. The only grades were 2 exams and a final, and the only part of the exams that are cumulative is the essay question. Slide ID section on exam can be difficult to study for. Don't need the textbook, but you will need the primary source readings.
I love Dr. Gulizio! She's a great lecturer, even though she changes the slides a little too quickly. If you visit her in office hours, she'll give good tips/points for writing assignments. Her exams are non-cumulative and VERY easy if you pay attention to her review sheets. Take her course - she wants her students to succeed.
Gulizio was a good professor, but this class was straight up history instead of a real VAPA. She tried to make the material interesting, and adapted after the first test had too much writing.
Dr. Gulizio is the best professor I've had this semester. Very kind and funny. Took her for Intro to Ancient Rome (VAPA) and if you go to class/do the readings and put the effort in you'll do good. You can tell she really cares about what she's teaching. Not too easy or too hard. Go to office hours, she has some cool stories to tell.
Although I really enjoyed Dr. Gulizio's class, it was pretty intense in regards to preparing for exams. For each test, we had to memorize 40+ slide identifications of roman sites/sculptures/monuments and over 150 key terms. I studied way too much for this class when I should've been focusing on my core classes.
Lectures were always engaging but tests were few and far between. (And VERY difficult.) I've been taking classics courses since high school and I made a D on both midterms. The amount of material for each test is just ridiculous. Not easy to study for. I will say she is a very sweet lady and she definitely knows her stuff.
Dr. Gulizio is a great professor, but the exams were very difficult. I failed miserably my first one but after you get the hang of them, they become relatively simple. Even though lots of memorization was involved, by knowing what's going on and explaining that will get you a good grade. Her lectures were great and I learned a great deal of Rome!
Here's what to do. Ignore all assigned textbooks & readings. Type notes from her lectures, she will identify slides, vocab, and passage material on it. Record the basics of what she says. Memorize her explanations of vocab, passage, and slide material, this takes about 3 hours each, and parrot the material on her test. Very easy A compared to most.
This class is way too hard for a VAPA! The tests were 90% free response but you're expected to be able to write a ridiculous amount for each term/slide to get full credit. If you want to learn about Rome, I've heard her intro to Rome class is much easier. I studied way more for this class than any other and barely pulled through with an A-
I took this as a VAPA; the class is a mix of three tests and a quiz each week. The structure of the class makes the first third of the semester much harder than the latter two thirds; readings matter less (I didn't do them) for the second two tests and got A's on both. Everything on tests is straight from the lecture, so I would suggest going.
She is an amazing professor. I know a great deal about Rome when I finished her class. It was a big class but the lectures were engaging. I highly recommend going to lectures because her tests are based entirely on lectures. Go to SI session too for extra help.
Dr. Gulizio was a very nice professor. The whole class is lecture and attendance isn't mandatory. There is one online quiz every week, two tests, and a final. Her notes are posted online after every class. She wants you to succeed and will help you out if you don't understand something. Was an easy VAPA.
Dr. Gulizio's lectures are engaging, and she's always happy to answer questions. Show up, do the assignments, and you'll be fine
Dr. Gulizio was a wonderful lady and a wonderful teacher. I took her for Intro to Ancient Rome, and even though I had taken AP Latin in high school, she introduced new and old material in a fascinating way. I looked forward to her class every week. Would recommend! <3
Dr. Gulizio is the best and this is coming from a Government background with no background in Ancient Rome. In order to pass her class you must attend lecture and take good notes. Her lectures are enriched with information so you must study! Weekly quizzes each week are easy. Overall she is a caring and silly instructor that you'll love.
Dr. Gulizio is such a good professor! She's so sweet, and tries to make the lectures as entertaining as possible. The class is extremely easy if you take good notes during lecture. I didn't even read the required texts since she only tested on what was taught during lecture.
Free response tests require the memorization of dates and details, as well as the ability to explain why the details are important, as well as easy online quizzes each week. Even as someone who is interested in archaeology and architecture, I thought the content was very tedious, but Professor Gulizio made up for it with her enthusiasm.
I really enjoyed Dr. Gulizio's Intro to Ancient Rome class, because she was a great lecturer (where test info comes from) and was very passionate about the topic, which was also very interesting. The weekly quizzes were online, open-notes/book, and very straightforward, and the tests are easy if you study (requires memorization). Awesome class!
Great Class, this is an awesome and engaging class. The fist part of the class is more like facts based and a little bit boring. But after that you get to read Greek/Roman myths that are really interesting. Exams are easy and you get collaborative study guides, but TA is mean, she is a tougher grader than the professor herself.
I enjoy the subject and the class. The tests were unbearable though. She expects you to memorize 100+ terms, 40+ slide ID's, and 14+ "essay" questions. I just took this class for a required culture credit and heard it was "amazing". I loved Greek archaeology before I took this class. It was just way too much for each exam.
The class is not bad and she's a good lecturer, however, what she expects you to know for the test is ridiculous. The test is mostly short answer and she expects you to memorize every single detail of and importance of 40+ slides, 150 terms, and 20 essay questions. Plus she takes off a point or 2 for not remembering to add the tiniest detail.
Make no mistake, Joann is knowledgeable. The problem is the sheer volume of terms required to pass one of her tests. It's not an issue that she expects a lot from her students, it's quite simply too much; it's undigestible, insurmountable. Do not take this class unless you are already familiar with Greek archaeology or are a masochist.
Fantastic professor and a great person. I've had Dr. Gulizio a few times and I'll always learn much more than I expect. It helps to know a little Latin taking 511K, though. It's not easy for everybody, but Dr. Gulizio is really mindful of everyone's skill levels with the language.
DONT take this class! The advisors will tell you it's an easy A however that is not true at all. The class makes absolutely no sense as it it so poorly explained. I have completed this class and have learned nothing. There is also way to much work you have to do outside of class. Take another class if you need to meet your requirement, save ur GPA.
This class is definitely A LOT of work BUT so worth taking. I learned so much, and the teaching team was super accommodating. Although there are many assignments, if you complete them and at least put some effort into them it shouldn't be hard to get an A- or A! Take Ancient Rome if you want to learn!!
The lectures (by Dr. Lundy) were definitely on the shorter side, but the weekly assigned reading was no joke. The teaching team was understanding of extenuating circumstances and made accommodations where possible. The class was very interesting, but I found the case studies to sometimes be redundant. The exams unfortunately varied in difficulty.
Dr. Gulizio is great, go to her office hours if u need help she is super nice. The exams are open notes which is great! Towards the end, there is a lot of extra credit opportunities and the final is a 4 page essay, which is not graded harshly. Overall, its an easy A if you just do the work. Lundy makes lectures very fun and enjoyable :)
Professor Gulizio is really kind. She was light-hearted and approachable in class and encourages questions. CC307D was also a really easy class. One weekly Canvas assignment and/or open note quiz, plus extra credit assignment. Tests were not open note, but all content was in powerpoints given. Easy VAPA for UT students. I never used the TB.
This class was very well-structured and informative. It requires a few hours of busy work watching lectures and reading per week to get an A, but as long as you put in the effort, you'll do fine. Exams and reading quizzes require some studying but aren't terrible. Not the best VAPA for everyone but definitely enjoyable for history buffs.
I love Dr. Gulizio and took her Intro to Mythology LAH course in the fall of 2019. She is easily one of my favorite professors at UT Austin, and I remember looking forward to going to her class not only to learn about ancient Greek and Roman mythology but also to listen to her hilarious stories and anecdotes. LOVE her. Highly recommend her class.
After struggling through another online semester, Prof. Gulizio made it her mission to created a stable learning environment and make sure her students were not overwhelmed. If you were having a hard time and needed help, she would not hesitate to work with you to get back on track. Reading is a MUST in this class but material is not difficult.
Easy class, do the bare minimum work and youll get an A. There is a reading and lecture every week, but they are usually interesting. The quizzes over them are super easy and you can them twice if youre not happy with the first score.
Dr. Gulizio and Dr. Lundy together supervise this Classics course. While Lundy provides the bulk of the lectures, Gulizio and her teaching team come up with the modules and assignments. Although doing the bare minimum is sufficient, this class had numerous interesting extra credits that make the course enjoyable, if you're interested in classics.
I decided to take Intro to Myth solely for my VAPA credit, but ended up LOVING the class. Dr. Gulizio is such a great lecturer and I ended up genuinely looked forward to going to her class. Highly recommend her as a professor. As for workload, we had small weekly assignments, and no exams just one final essay/project. Take this class!!
Weekly quiz or short answer questions. Quizzes are easy and you can find answers from her slides/lectures. One final project, no exam.
Dr. Gulizio is a phenomenal professor as she is passionate, accessible, and truly cares about her students' wellbeing and education when it comes to combining mythology and history. The content is super interesting and there are no exams, weekly quizzes (super easy if u pay attention to the notes in class), and a final (creative project).
Genuinely made a topic I already loved even more fun to study, weekly quizzes that aren't too difficult and is an actual review that helps, extremely understanding of late work because of any issues, just have to talk to her in advance, no final exam (thankfully because it was a lot of content), but a fun final project.
Loved this class, would highly recommend! Weekly quizzes are fine as long as you listen to the lectures. Very interesting topics and readings. Fun final project for our finals instead of any exams. Overall, very low-stress and fun. Easy enough to follow even with very little background in Greek/Roman mythology.
Dr. Gulizio is a fantastic professor. She does not try to make her classes overly difficult or demanding, has interesting lectures, and is readily available to help or accommodate you. This is definitely one of the best VAPAs available could not recommend it enough.
There are a lot of readings assigned, but because they aren't necessary. Attendance is optional and she records all lectures, you should watch them because there are quizzes each week. Very understanding and a good lecturer. The writing load is more than it should be (weekly 200 word responses) but could be worse. Good professor, meh class.
Dr. Gulizio is a great professor! The class assignments/quizzes are based on the lectures and are easy. There are assigned readings, but they aren't required to do well in the class. She is always willing to give out extensions if you email her. Overall, she made the class super fun, and I would highly recommend the class.
Prof. Gulizio is an amazing person and an amazing lecturer. She is very passionate about Ancient Greek history and made it very interesting to go through the time periods. There are weekly assignments and quizzes, but they were very doable based off of lectures alone. There are readings, but Gulizio covers everything in presentation. Awesome VAPA
She's very passionate about what she teaches and make the lectures interesting. There are weekly quizzes and assignments but they are all based off the lectures. She was also kind enough to give us the lecture notes (maybe it's because of the pandemic).
I loved having Dr. Gulizio this year! Each week there are readings/annotations, a written assignment, and a quiz; all relatively easy. I mostly relied on her lectures to understand the content. I never felt bored in class because she is super enthusiastic about the subject, and the material itself is interesting, too. Take this for your VAPA!
Prof Gulizio was amazing! I really enjoyed all of her lectures over Greek mythology. There were no more than four assignments every week and no exams. I heard she's not teaching mythology anymore, but I would take any course she teaches. I wouldn't recommend taking this vapa if she's not the professor.
If you show up to class and take notes, it's an easy A! There's a few things to do weekly (annotations, open-note quizzes, etc.), and your notes will be your best friend. I really liked her lectures and I feel like I learned a lot!
CC303 with Dr. Gulizio was the best class I've taken in college. She's very funny and engaging. Didn't feel like much of a class but more of a "listen to prof tell you stories of Greek myth and then go about your day" kind of ordeal. As long as you read the outlines and pay attention to the stories she talks about in lectures, you will get an A.
Professor Gulizio's lectures are not mandatory, but you won't regret showing up to her lectures because are very interesting even if you are not a big mythology person. The TAs usually grade the assignments, and some of them may grade harder than the others. The final is a project which is great.
Gulizio is really nice, fun professor. She's super laid back with her assignments and lectures. The weekly annotations are completion grades and the weekly quizzes are very easy as long as you listen to her lectures. Her lectures pretty much sum up and highlight key points of the reading so as long as you listen you're good. Easy A for sure.
Dr. Gulizio was a very interesting lecturer (maybe because I love the subject), and she and her team were easily approachable. There were weekly quizzes, Perusall, discussion posts, and a final project. Listen to lectures, and the quizzes are easily doable. She was also considerate of our workload in the middle of the semester. Loved this class!
her lectures were good not too much information but not boring either. This class was really easy and i enjoyed it. She Does not believe in exams so no exams. but be prepare for the quizzes that she gives. they are only 10 question but she only gives 15 mins to take. It is easy but make sure you look over the slides. the readings are pretty easy.
Def recommend this class for any elective, very easy A. No exams, only weekly open note quizzes where you could get answers directly from the lecture slides on canvas. I never attended class and still finished with a 95. The topic did seem very interesting but honestly I had other classes to focus on. Overall, good class!
I highly recommend Intro to Classical Mythology with Professor Gulizio if you're looking for a great and easy VAPA. The class was hybrid, but all lectures were recorded and all you needed to do was read the assigned readings and watch the lectures. There are short weekly quizzes but if you did the weekly assignments they were fairly simple.
Super nice, easy but really interesting class. We didn't have any exams which was lovely. Would recommend for anyone who needs a VAPA.
Dr. Gulizio has been one of my favorite professors so far. She truly cares for her students and balances learning with discussion excellently, making the classroom a super welcoming environment. If you have the opportunity, please take one of her classes. A true gem at UT!
Dr. Gulizio's class was very simple as there were short weekly assignments, a final project, and no exams. There were a lot of readings expected to be completed before every lecture, but they are manageable especially with the supplementary materials she releases like PowerPoint notes.
Her classes are always interesting, especially if you're interested in mythology. You can tell she really likes what she teaches. She's a great lecturer. No tests, and a very light course load. Pretty easy A.
I could not recommend this professor more. She is so amazing, caring, passionate, and she made learning greek so very enjoyable!!!
Dr. Gulizio is AMAZING. This has been one of my favorite classes at UT, and I'm a 3rd year. The content is super interesting and the homework is so easy yet still very engaging. Final project is entirely up to you and she encourages the creative freedom. She is so so sweet and understanding. If you need a VAPA or GC flag, please take Mythology!!
The work was manageable, with weekly quizzes and persuall annotations. There was no final exam, just a final project, and occasional writing assignments that were not difficult at all. She would extend deadlines if needed and overall she was just an amazing professor. strongly recommend
Take Roman Archeology with Professor Gulizio. She is so sweet and it is super easy. No tests, a weekly assignment that takes like 20 minutes. Weekly open note quizzes and extra credit quizzes, will take 20 mins combined. Occasional longer writing assignments (easy). No attendance/tests so I went to like half of the lectures and got an A easily.
Professor Gulizio is absolutely amazing!!! I am an engineering major that took this class as a VAPA and a GC flag. Attendance isn't necessary and this course is an easy A as long as you do the work. However, I genuinely wanted to go to this class every TTH, it got me up in the morning. She's inspired me to study abroad in Rome. So good!!
Dr. Gulizio is extremely caring and obviously very passionate about the subject matter. She is willing to go over any material if needed and made lectures very interactive and informative in a fun way. All textbooks were provided by her as pdfs on canvas so it saved me a lot of money. Even her TA added a whole level to the class that made it fun.
Dr. Gulizio is such an amazing professor and I would definitely take her class again. She is very caring and if you need help with anything she is always open to help. Its an easy A and a great choice for a VAPA. There are no tests and easy online assignments each week. There are weekly quizzes that are open note and no final exam, just a project.
Professor Gulizio is so passionate about what she teaches which makes it a very enjoyable class. All Quizzes are open note, and there are extra credit quizzes offered weekly. The final is a project which was super fun and relatively easy to do. Very caring and understanding when it comes to extensions and deadlines.
Gulizio is a great prof and very passionate about mythology. Even if you don't like mythology, this is still a very easy VAPA + GC flag class to take. Open notes/readings, online quizzes, and perusall annotations each week with an occasional writing assignment and a final project/essay instead of a final. No exams and not required to attend class.
Overall she was awesome! Easy weekly assignments and open note quizzes. Super caring and considerate of you having other classes and things going on. Willing to change almost every due date if needed. Definitely cares about every student! An easy and enjoyable VAPA and GC flag!!
Weekly online hw assignment (best of 2 tries), weekly quiz (open note), weekly extra credit quiz (open note), 3-5 image IDs / discussion boards graded p easily, final essay project just start it early and get it out of the way. Very fair grading, teacher is accessible via email, don't have to go to lecture because all slides are posted. TAKE HER!!
Lots of extra credit, some assignments w/ no timer, 3/4 essays, all answers in the slideshows, was very engaging. I stopped going to class after the first month, but didn't struggle just have to check for deadlines. No penalties for late assignments (NOT the writing assignments) as long as you get it in before she grades. Highly recommend!
Dr. Gulizio is an amazing professor. I took this class to fulfill a VAPA requirement but became genuinely interested in Roman archaeology because of her. There is a fair amount of weekly work but it is manageable. There are no tests but there is a final project which you have the choice of doing an essay project or a creative project.
Dr. Gulizio is great option for any VAPA. I took her mythology class and loved it. Assignments were simple and doable with no test. Just make sure you take good notes weekly for the quiz. It was nice to be able to do a project as a final.
She is incredibly charismatic and fun. I did not find this class interesting and struggled to pay attention in lectures but all the info needed for homework is posted on Canvas. The majority of the class is on Roman architecture, so if you can suffer through that it is an easy A. The TA constantly interrupted her so it made it hard to follow.
As someone who was taking her class with little Roman-knowledge, she was a great professor! She cares for your mental health. She is very passionate about her lectures and loves to talk to students. One project & lots on discussions/short essays. NO tests. I highly suggest the class to someone who is looking for a easy class with a nice teacher.
Dr. Gulizio is a cool gal who is passionate about mythology and truly loves the subject. Class has a set structure based on quizzes, discussions, short write-ups, and a final project. Weekly quizzes are all in the PowerPoints and lecture is honestly optional if you know how to research and write something up quickly. S-tier VAPA and cool subject!
Professor Gulizio was very passionate about Greek mythology. She made it a very enjoyable class with relatively easy work. If you pay attention to her lectures and read her assigned readings, you should get an A+. Easy VAPA, would 100% recommend.
Amazing! Caring, sweet, great professor.
I took Greek Architecture for my minor and LOVED Prof. Gulizio! She is very sweet, gives engaging lectures, and is clearly passionate about her work. She is always willing to work with students so that they can do well in the class, and her class is very nicely structured. Highly recommend taking her class if you can!
Professor Gulizio is one of my favorite professors, I took her classical mythology class for my VAPA and it was not super hard, just some quizzes and papers/projects, also annotations on readings. She is such a good lecturer and just super cool and funny, would highly recommend.
Joann is nice and cares about students including their grades.
Joann is the best Latin professor at UT. If you ever have a choice, always choose her. She's a good teacher imo and most importantly she cares about you and your grades, which is important for a teacher of subject so challenging.
Nice prof; my class was huge, and attendance was not taken. Lectures were all online and quizzes were easy, pretty much identical to notes and lecture content.
Attendance isn't required, so make your own choices whether you want to block out the time or not- but I personally found her lectures so interesting to listen to! This class gives you all the material for its open-note quizzes and has a final project instead of an exam which you can be creative with, so it's easy and fun. 10/10 VAPA!!
Very easy class since there are no exams. Instead, there are quizzes every week but they are short & easy. If you do take this class, be very careful with AI as the prof actually checks and WILL write a referral if she catches you. Other than that, the work is pretty easy and there is a writing/creative project at the end of the semester.
Her lectures are entertaining, and you can tell she enjoys the subject matter. There are no exams, just online quizzes, identification assignments and annotation assignments, all very easy. This class is not hard to pass, and you will actually learn stuff if you attend the lectures. She is also funny and sweet and will help you out if you need it.
Great teaching style & very approachable.
I love Dr. Gulizio so much! She's so sweet, kind, and funny. Attendance is not mandatory, but you should totally show up to her lectures as they are very interesting. Work is minimal, no final exam, just a project that can be creative, and weekly open note quizzes. Highly encourage taking her class for your VAPA credit.
Great professor, great lectures.
this class is super easy to do well in even if you don't watch every lecture. def don't use chatGPT on simple assignments bc she reported a bunch of students this semester for that a lot.
Took Professor Gulizio's Intro to Ancient Greece. Lecture attendance was optional - highly recommend attending. Content was pretty interesting. Was pretty easy to get good grades in the class w/open note online quizzes & identification assignments. DO NOT use AI. Professor Gulizio was great, passionate, & made herself available for students.
