She is a great teacher, she spends as much time going over your work as you spend doing it---for once a teacher that really tries to teach and make a difference...Go to class, do the work, as long as you're decent at english an easy A---will even let you re-work your papers later for a higher grade. Really nice too
Great English teacher!! Joann is very fair with grading. Very willing to help. Talks about her teenage kids and relates well to the young and olderer students in the class. Makes the class fun and intersting.
A teacher who puts a lot of effort into teaching. She wants her students to do well, and will go out of her way to answer their questions, even outside of class. If you're a hard worker, take this class. She will appreciate and acknowledge you for it, and you'll earn an A.
Take the class. Not really easy, but not too difficult. She will really help you improve your writing.
Very easy class, she's extremely nice and helpful.
She is still my fav. teacher so far here. If you like english, really try, she'll grade fair. She's so nice, I wish I could have her again. Do the work and it'll be fine. I wish more teachers gave a crap like her.
Willing to help. Nice person. Easy to get along with.
She seems way to critical and not helpful enough.
does not do a good job of explaining herself. NO compassion. kinda on a power trip most of the time
She makes the information interesting. Does not babysit, but is willing to help and shows you how to improve your papers. Very easy to get along with. I'd take her again.
i don't feel like she was very clear in what she wanted from her students and changed things around at the last minute. she also whould conredict herself. I beleave that she spent to much time in the private sector and needs to learn how to teach better.
Loved her! She is an extremely intelligent woman and a MAGNIFICENT writer. She is the only teacher who I would ever say I have actually admired. She takes an interest in her students as people and she is very helpful. Even if you aren't the best in English, she trys to make the class appropriate for all levels. Great teacher!
Excellent teacher!
She is not compassionate by any means. The last week of school my baby got sick and was admitted to the hospital. I missed the last week of classes but turned in my essay. She dropped my grade from an A to a D!I called and pleaded for her to change the grade. She demanded to see hospital papers then raised my grade to a C...Some people have no heart.
She was a very boring teacher. At times she seemed lost with what we were going to do. Her class was easy but she was kind of snobbish.
I took her english 103 class in spring 2007. she was very helpful. She gave notes how to write different types of argumentative essay. As long as you put your effort on paper, she will give you good grade. You have to work hard.
I totally loved this woman. Take her and penelope blake and your college life at Rock Valley will be complete. Amazing interesting teacher, who actually cares.
She is awesome. She takes the time to listen and help you with what you are struggling with. She is very clear with her instructions. You can't go wrong if you pay attention.
I love this teacher! The class was awesome!
only class at rock valley I hated going too. She always made little comments about the students in her class. Didnt teach much. Could have took a online class. All of the people i knew in the class didnt like her. I would never take her again.
Very confusing teacher. When u ask a question u don't get a direct answer, u're more confused after u ask a question and u feel attacked. Write down what she says-she told us to write a 2 pg paper and when we turned it in she said it was suppose to be a 2 1/2 pg paper, everyone had 2 pgs.u have to do a presentation for part of the final
She is so confusing!! I would not recommend her. If you ask her a question she will just confuse you. I didn't like her class at all. She does grade pretty easy, but some of the requirements seem pointless.
I cannot stand her! She is so confusing! She will contradict herself and make you confused, resulting in a low grade for your paper. Then when you try to explain she forgets what she told you and won't take your word for it! She actually tried to encourage me to drop her class because she thought I would fail...ridiculous! DO NOT TAKE HER!
Learned a lot about writing in this class. Professor Heck is helpful but will not babysit - she will help students who want to learn - and work for their grade.
Learned alot about writing in this class. Professor Heck will not babysit - she will help students who want to learn - and work for their grade.
Tends to be moody. Takes attendence as a grade. Will help you out though if you need it.
She is SUPER CONFUSING!! She contradicts what she says all the time. She'll give handouts of her expectations then completely goes against them in class. Terrible time trying to understand what she really wants.
Great Professor. Really enjoyed the class. Willing to help out.
great teacher! great person!take her
She makes no sense most of the time on what she is lecturing. I don't believe she even has a lecture ready for class. She is a good person and tries to help but her help is not really that helpful. I would take her again just because it is not hard to pass in her class.
I love going to school, and love rock valley, but i couldnt stand going to her class. You never knew what kind of mood she would be in. She was a good writer and did help me in my writing, i just had to look past her mood swings.
I enjoyed going to this class. I think she really tries to relate the material to cuurent issues. She really did help me become a better writer and I am getting better grades on the papers I write in other classes.
I love English, I'm even an English major, but I absolutely HATE this class. We've read and 'discussed' the same article ten times. She is totally unprepared for every class so most of the time we end up going over useless material or literally just sit there the whole time. I would not recommend her to anyone, especially if you don't like English.
i love rock valley, love school, love writing, hate this class, enough said. Somehow she gave me a B in the class, but i hated this class. You could miss 4 class and not lower your grade, i never miss class, i missed all 4. Class was painful. I want to be a teacher, she is how not to run a classroom.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. It was by far the worst English class I have ever had. She rambles and assigns useless homework that she never grades. She can never justify why she gave you a certain grade and when you ask her why she tells you because that's what she gave you. Attendance is mandatory and you'll want to kill yourself by the time its over.
I liked her a lot, i thought she was very helpful helping students revise their papers. I liked her a lot as a person and a teacher she is very very nice!
HATED her. She pulled me in her office and lectured me for literally 10 minutes about how she "Didn't have to accept" one of my papers. She is so annoying I can't even explain. Has work days in class like we're in high school. Waste of my time to go to this class. But all horrid teachers make attendance mandatory. Of course.
I highly recommend Joann Heck as an English instructor. I look forward to bumping into her on campus, and she will be dearly missed. Out of all of my instructors that I have had so far here at Rock Valley, she has been the most helpful. This makes all the difference with my continuing education.
can be hard on students, but a good teacher over all.
Professor Heck is a great person and always willing to help. I learned so much in this class that has helped improve my grades in other classes where writing is required. There is a lot of writing required in the class, though.
I had her for my english 110 Intro to Technical Writing class and I honestly enjoyed the class and the teacher quite a bit. She is probably one of the nicest teachers I've ever met. Never heard a single mean or snobby comment from her. She seemed genuinely interested in each of her students and was very willing to help and give guidance. Very nice.
She's a bit of a flake sometimes, pushing due dates back and not always being prepared for class, but she is always amazingly helpful on papers! So if that's what you need, which is what I needed, then I highly recommend taking her. I'll be taking her again for 103 next semester.
Love, love, love Professor Heck! Helps create a strong sense of cooperation amoung students in her class. She is ways willing to help and knows her stuff! Be sure to be on time and in class.
Very easy class! If you need help, you have to ask, she's not a mind reader! Unless you do not do your work, I think it's nearly impossible to fail her class.
Good teacher very knowledgeable
GREAT, KIND, FUNNY TEACHER!!! Prof. Heck is extremely passionate about what she teaches. You really have to make it a priority to be at every class, but as long as you participate in the class discussions she will LOVE YOU!
Only gives out three papers. Lectures are boring as heck. If your not a A+++ writer there is no way to get more then a B+.
Professor Heck was great! I thoroughly enjoyed her class! I was sad when it was over. I love that she tells you upfront what she expects from you the first day. Any bad reviews were probably from slackers.. If you go to class, participate, do your work and make necessary changes after feedback you are golden! Very helpful caring and compassionate!
Professor Heck is a great English teacher. She is always there when you need some help and will guide you in the right direction. She tells you what she wants out of you and gives great feedback on all papers and assignments. She loves group discussions.
Great teacher, very helpful
She was a pretty good teacher. I took her for both ENG 101 and 103... tough grader however. But, her class is harder online.
Professor Heck expects students do their best, but she will help you along the way. She encourages students to ask her for help and to ask each other for help. Great class. Taking her again for 103.
Make sure to buy the textbook, you will want to keep it. She comes across a little hard core at first, but I found her to be very helpful and committed to her students. She gives great real world advice. She treats this class more as a professional workplace situation. There are group projects sprinkled throughout. My favorite RVC teacher.
Prof Heck truly cares about her students and the amount of help she gives is amazing. She's very blunt and honest, which is good and bad. I loved her class though. She became one of my favorites. She is a tough grader, however she helps you grow as a writer. Go to class & actually try, guarantee you get an A or B
I took an online class so I wouldn't have to socialize, but there were several group projects. If you turn something in and it's not the way she wants, she doesn't get back to you right away and then it's your fault that it was "late" after you fix it. But the homework is really easy.
Pretty good class. She helps if you need help. Pretty clear on the stuff she wants.
Im sure shes a wonderful woman, but I took her online 101 class and it was awful. Never gave clear grading, never responded to the questions I asked, and never gave me feedback on how to improve. Maybe her in person class is better, but I know I struggled a lot and worked my butt off but it still wasnt enough for her.
I enjoyed the class. Her feedback was helpful and insightful. The assignments also relate directly to real world situations.
Professor Heck was okay, she doesn't really give you good feedback on your work in person but she does online which is a little confusing. Every time I ask her a question she doesn't really directly answer.. one paper and it was at the end of the semester.
By far the worse "professor" I have ever encountered. She takes weeks to grade assignments, doesn't know how to respond to emails if she even gets a chance to read them. Such lack of professionalism and organizational skills for the level of teaching that she is at. Completely unacceptable and would never recommend her or take her ever again!
I took Professor Heck for ENG 101 and ENG 103. She was always very helpful and caring to me.
Professor Heck is a good teacher. If you skip class, you will NOT pass. Be ready to participate in class and peer review. She gives a clear grading criteria. Make sure you write off the topics she gives you, which you can pick from.
she wasn't very clear on instructions. she made me feel embarrassed while talking to me about my rough draft the whole class could hear her telling me what was wrong with it. attendance is mandatory but one time we sat and learned about colors for an entire day.
Pretty easy and straighforward.
Took her for ENG 101 online and taking her again for ENG 103.
One of the best professors at Rock Valley!
Professor Heck is easy organized and easy to understand. This really helps in an online class. I have her for 103 and she is so much more organized that my 101 teacher.
I took her technical writing class in the spring of 2021, so during quarantine, online. I have heard from her exactly twice. The first time was during the first week of school and the second was a few weeks ago when her due dates were messed up. That's it. I expect I'll hear from her again around finals. I have no idea what kind of teacher she is.
Took Prof Heck for Eng 1o1 and Eng 102 and Eng 110 Technical Writing. She has always provided me with feedback on my assignments. She answers email questions very quickly. I would take any class she teaches.
I had Professor Heck for both semesters. I really appreciate how the class was well organized and she was really quick to grading papers. However, she did not respond back to emails quickly and did not give much guidance on assigned papers, which can be frustrating when you need help. Overall, she was okay.
I learned a lot in ENG 103. I appreciated how Professor Heck gave effective feedback on assignments, graded assignments in a timely manner, had an organized EAGLE platform, and also how she responded to EAGLE messages/questions in a timely manner.
She likes to ignore when you ask for help and is not helpful at all when you need feedback. Also very not understanding when it comes to needing clarification. Do not recommend
Professor Heck was extremely organized, very kind via email, and her communications (announcements, assignments, reminders) were kind. She gives plenty of reminders of due dates and reiterates that the class "builds" as the semester goes by. If I have another English class to take - I will personally make sure I get her!
I took Professor Heck for ENG 101 and ENG 103 hybrid classes. She really gets to know her students and she really cares. I have never felt more comfortable with a teacher. I will also be taking her ENG 110 next semester. I highly suggest her classes.
Professor Heck is such a caring professor. I can honestly say that I looked forward to going to class. She gives you helpful feedback and helps bring out the best in her students. This class was so helpful, unlike my ENG 101. I definitely recommend.
The only assignments will be read the textbook and summarize each chapter of it, then the final essay is worth every point for the entire class. Her late policy was nice, but having every assignment locked so no working ahead and then assigning with 1 week notice the 8 page essay worth 25% of the final due on thanksgiving day was ridiculous.
I had many personal issues during the class but Professor Heck was very understanding and kind. I learned so much from this class and I didn't feel overwhelmed. Excellent teacher.
English 101 hybrid class where attendance was only required once a week. Heck set it up so that we got lots of work done in class with the help of other classmates. The online portion was very helpful in describing the assignments we were working on, but not a lot of work was due online. I wish she taught an English 103 hybrid.
Professor Heck is very caring about everyone and she makes assignments clear and easy to understand. She wants everyone to succeed. I learned so much in her class and it was very manageable.
Professor Heck is a good professor but make sure to turn your assignments in on time. You can turn in late work but you will get a 10% penalty. There are quizzes from the textbook and there is only one paper which is a research one. She is a hard grader but gives good feedback.
She's okay, majority of class grade is the final paper.
She's an incredible professor. She recommended additional resources for my paper, responded to any questions I had super quick, gave genuine and useful feedback, and was very approachable. Professor Heck is a teacher I would love to take again if I had the chance. She's my favorite English teacher I have taken at RVC.
Honestly the best English professor at RVC. She's insightful and pays attention to her students. She gives extra time on assignments if she feels like we could do better on papers. Very funny and incredibly intelligent and I would 100% take her again.
