This woman is not pleasant to be around. She has no interest in the subject or the students and can be very insulting. She was just my lab instructor so there wasn't much for her to say. But asking her a question is like asking her to pull a needle out your rear end; she just doesn't want to do it. She barely does her job.
Seems to dislike teaching and explaining anything. Even if I was careful and respectful when I asked her anything, she'd still snub you or talk to you like you are worthless. She also gave difficult recitation quizzes, with questions deliberately confusing. I did a lot outside the class and did well. I would not want to be in her class again.
She got the job done. She told you what you needed to know to pass the test. Her quizzes were tough and she graded the labs harshly. She explained how to do the lab in detail before we started. Ppl were afraid to ask her questions during lab, but she would usually answer then if u asked. not great but could be worse
She's a good professor. Attendance isn't mandatory, but going to class will help a lot with understanding concepts. She's not mean or nasty. I'm glad I didn't listen to these other comments. Her quizzes are fair and its 5 quizzes, drop 1. Midterm wasn't tough.
She is a very good professor. Not very emotional, but it's not an acting class. Her notes are clear and enough to do well. No tricks. She asks only what she taught. Fair grader and drops the lowest out of 4 midterms. She is great for the course and I definitely recommend her.
proff mathias is a very clear and fair proff. she tells you what she wants and doesnt put anything she didnt teach on any of the tests. her quizes are easy and her midterm and final were very fair. just know the textbook and youll do really well
Seems like she hates teaching, mimics a robot just re-reading the textbook. If you can learn exclusively from the textbook take her otherwise avoid avoid avoid
Great professor clear concise and straight to the point. gets the message across and no tricks, gimmicks or games on her test. come to class on time study notes read the book and your set. Material is not hard to understand but requires alot of work
Please avoid her. She is very clear as a recitation professor and gives great notes and is helpful, but her tests are so difficult and requires too many steps in every problem that there is never enough time to finish. Her tests are the reason why I did not enjoy her as a professor.
Lecture is clear, but she's a robot - reads directly from the textbook. Does not seem to enjoy teaching at all. Does not give nearly enough time to complete her quizzes/tests, most of the class had to guess much of her tests. Avoid if possible.
Very unclear. Not recommended. Basically reads straight from the book, without explaining it any more.
Does a really great job of explaining the material and her quiz is not hard. She fell behind in the the course material. She is a bit spunky.
Her quizzes are very fair. She does a good job explaining the chapters but didn't get to all of them, which is pretty bad. She has a bit of an attitude too...
AWESOME!!!! People say she is a robot but I don't feel that way at all. She is spicy and intelligent! Her quizes are very easy and fair. Easy A
Very boring, horrible explanations, HARD TESTS, (with uncovered work). Does not break anything down and reads everything directly from the textbook. Talks with a sleepy uninteresting tone. The class had almost 100 ppl spring '13, asking a question was a task. Combined with the recitation teacher this made it the worst class I have ever taken at BC.
I have a mixed feeling about this professor: she offers extra credit but on the downside there is usually not enough time to finish her tests... At least for me. Tries to cover a lot of material, thus her explanations are rushed and not always clear. Also, it's important to do lots problems at home to be ready for test.
She does not care about you, she gives too many notes and erases them before you can copy them. You cannot even see the board. She has a very bad attitude. I was really sick and she didn't let me take the midterm which was 33% of my grade so I had no choice but to drop the class.
A robotic professor. 4 quizes 33% drops the lowest, midterm 33% and Final 34%. Do not take her she just does problems and assumes everyone knows how to do the problems. Avoid if possible
In my 3 years of college, this professor has been the worst professor I have taken. Professor Mathias clearly doesn't enjoy teaching or even being at Brooklyn College. She gets an attitute when you ask a question and assumes everyone knows how to solve every problem. She is like a robot: regurgitating word-for-word material from the tectbook.
Professor Mathias teaches like a robot and doesn't properly prepare students for the exams. She has an attitude when you have a question and doesn't care whether understand the inf or not. Please avoid if possible. Skip a semeter of chemistry if you can, just to avoid her. You WILL regret it.
Terrible professor, I mean robot.
Some professors are meant to be good teachers but some are not. She doesn't know how to teach. Classes are not really helpful. I am not recommending to take her.
try to avoid her. overall not so bad if you study hard and read the book thoroughly. if youre not the greatest student and not on top of your studies dont take her.
She is not a good chemistry professor let alone a good professor in general. She doesn't explain the material clearly. Personally, I came into this class without any knowledge about chemistry. I hoped to actually learn something, but overall I didn't learn anything.I would never recommend her to anyone.
Horrible professor. She writes endless notes on the board, recites everything from the textbook in a robotic tone, and she’s got a attitude problem. On the upside,no homework assignments, she gives extra credit quizzes and drops lowest grade. But you’re basically teaching yourself. You NEED to be disciplined in your studies.
She just copies stuff from the textbook. Basically every example on the board can be found din the book. Stop whining and practice each problem she tells you. I failed like 3/5 tests, lowest one dropped. In lab show her that you're hard working and be nice to her. For this I received B instead of F or c- maybe. But honestly just study.
I heard so many bad things about Dr. Mathias but didn't see any of them when i took her class, Spring 2014, if you go to her office hours she is very helpful. Do the problems and study hard.
I honestly do not know whats with all the negative reviews. I couldn't disagree more. Professor Mathias is extremely helpful and knowledgeable-and her going directly from the text was actually very helpful in my opinion, because with such a subject, its important to be organized. She offers many opportunities for you to succeed.
She is willing to help you if you put the time in to solve problems and go to office hours or problem sessions. Her grading policy seems a bit harsh, but it's just the way it works. Overall she was a good professor.
RUNN! i promise you hard time on everything related to the class. i used to be an A student in high school. All my grades were above 90 and still are except for this class. This is my first time to rate a professor, but i thought she deserved to be rated. If they have less than 1 as a rating i would have given her a 0. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Her lectures are super confusing and she reads straight from the text book, I literally studied everything on my own.
shes not clear and doesnt care much to explain gets agitated when asked questions
Please don't ever take her! She's horrible professor. The only reason I even took her this semester cause she was the only one teaching the class. Thought it wasn't going to be too bad. But I was wrong. She's no help and you need to teach yourself everything. Good thing about her? She drops the lowest quiz. Other than that, good luck!
I really want to punch whoever said she is a good professor. She's very knowledgable about chemistry but she should not be a professor, she goes way too quickly, erases the board before anyone copies something, doesn't explain things, she is soooo confusing. By the end of class, I'm still clueless. I have to self teach myself. AVOID HER CLASS!!
I just have 4 words for you: Please don't take her!
You will have to read the textbook and come to class to pass.
absolute ridiculous class, started off with 60 students and by the end of the semester only 20 were left. She refused to curve meanwhile everyone was failing her tests. i don't recommend taking her to anyone unless your amazing at chemistry.
Took her for lab. Shes there because she has to be. Leaves you alone to do the work. Definitely take her if youre into that. also hide your personal belongings because she carelessly snoops
She's the kind of professor that you will need to teach most of it to yourself. It's not necessarily bad but if thats something you're not good at then stay away. She's clear on what she expects and the problems she goes through in class are the same way she asks them on the test so its very straightforward. Her tests are all multiple choice.
tough tests, but then again chem is tough. expect to study. people dont seem to like her because she is a bit tough in lecture but during office hours she is a sweetheart. I will defiantly be taking her again.
talks about topic rather than giving notes, then expects you to follow the problems she puts up next tests have trick questions and the tests cover every small detail, everything she mentions is on the tests gives extra credit assignments
she has slides and basically just reads those and if you are not good at chem or math you wont know what is going on, confusing class and she can become condenscending when someone asks a question
Hands down, THE MOST HELPFUL PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD! I had to retake chem 1050 and I chose her as my professor the second time around and she made it so easy to understand and learn. She gives worksheets, practice problems, is interactive with the class and even holds workshops for us. AMAZING CHEM PROFESSOR, WOULD RECOMMEND TO ANYONE.
Absolute train wreck of a class. Taught chem 2050 as if we were chemists that knew what she was talking about. Stopped going to her lectures & had to teach myself the material
If you use the textbook you will pass. That's the only way
She tries to explain but it is hard to keep up with her because she teaches so fast. you will need to teach most of it to yourself. Her tests are multiple choice but i think they are fair tests. Just be prepared to teach yourself
She is the best chem 1050 professor ever. I love her and if you study, you will be fine. Her tests are pretty much what she teaches in class and on the slides.
I dont understand why students hate her so much. She gets her exams STRAIGHT from online worksheets. I did bad on her first quiz, but then typed one question from that quiz online, and founds worksheets identical to her quiz, and used it for all her other quizzes and tests and did fine. Shes nice, cares about students, and is highly intellectual.
Great professor
Uses powerpoint notes to present material, and uses smart-board to do problems. Gives extra-credit through participations and extra credit questions on exams and even extra credit assignments Textbook is a must use; you MUST read the material b4 lecture and do the assigned practice problems after lecture
She seems to not really care whether students understand or not, she rushes through the lecture and gets annoyed when people ask questions. You pretty much have to teach yourself.
Dr. Mathias was the strictest and hardest prof I've ever taken! I had her for CHEM 1100 Rec&Lab and I've got to tell u RUN AWAY from her! Cuz you won't get any good grade from her. I had to drop the course b/c of her. Anyways, don't be wise & take her class b/c I tried but failed READ the reviews below and trust them. However, she's a good person.
bad part is that thare isent much info on her online. since the comment has to be of limited size also you will not find any of her exams when this semester ends i wil makeaful report on her class i will also include some of her exams as well so students will understand why people are upset with her since the colage dosent alow complaint
exam 3 of analytical chem. i dont have any other exams. on and the students have 40 min to take the exam. also notice that the questions look nothing like the questions in the textbook so thare is no way to prepare. textbook: quntitative chemical analysis 8th ed.
People should really cut Mathias some slack. She is a good professor. If you come into the class, be prepared to learn. after all, it is chem. She may be stern but once you get to know her shes really sweet. She even offers extra credit. if you study her lectures and the examples given during lectures, you'll be ready for the exam. take her course.
Pay attention in class, do the problems she does on the board and read the slides and you will be fine. Normally 3 quizzes and 2 midterms for Chem 1050. She is available for a lot of time during office hours if you don't cram it the last two weeks. Partial credit on the quizzes is a big help. You also have to memorize a lot of ions but it's easy.
BEWARE! I had to teach myself chemistry. She flies and I mean at rocket speed through the material and she does a terrible job at explaining it. Aside from a MASSIVE amount of material that has to be understood, her tests are a nightmare and you have to know the material inside and out to get a good grade. Be prepared to teach yourself all semester
You will teach the course to yourself . The professor just repeats what's in the textbook. Also gives difficult exams.
Good Luck with this professor. She's a very nice lady, but she rushes through the lessons and is very strict with her grades. She does not offer extra credit and is kind of difficult to see outside class.
Taking her now and honestly? Read the chapters BEFORE class, go over ALL problems assigned and study. Her tests are easier than what she gives in class but you do have to study. And chemistry- you have to put much effort before it starts clicking in your head. She disliked me in the beginning but came around when she saw me putting effort.
She does give extra credit-sometimes up to 3-4 questions extra. She grades hard, but explains relatively ok, you just need to read prior to class. Chapter 11 read instead of her lecture-she will confuse you on that one. She gets irritated if she sees you being anxious. Answers all questions during office hours. Never answers her emails.
Very smart professor but doesn't share her knowledge with the students. She expects you to know chem like she does and if you don't and want to learn and ask questions she will roll her eyes at you (literally) and won't hide how annoyed she is. For me, it was useless to go to the lecture because I taught the subject to myself
I think a lot of people are intimidated by Prof Mathias. She's your very average professor. She does move by things quickly and gave 3 quizzes 2 tests (1 final) for CHM1050. No homework and attendance is not mandatory. YOU WILL HAVE TO WORK FOR A GOOD GRADE! I would not recommend for lazy students who think they can slide by and get an A.
I am not by any means a straight a student, but I can attest that Mathias is really not that bad. Obviously if you're taking a pre med level class, you cant expect it to be as easy as your other courses. I think she does a good job at explaining concepts, it helps to print out the lecture notes before class. Her tests are reasonable.
Hardest thing I have ever done because this prof doesnt teach. Reads off of slides. Gets angry when u question her thinking.
I dont think her way of teaching is effective.
P. Mathias is not a good lecturer. She doesn't explain things very well at all. I basically had to learn it on my own. Her lectures make you think she will test you on the really difficult parts of Chem but her tests were so much easier than I expected. That's not to say they were easy but she just didn't test us on the harder stuff. Study, do HW.
Worst professor. I taught myself the whole class, only have 2 midterms and a final which are super hard. Most of the class struggled to get a passing grade. Stay far away.
Loved her
The course covers a lot but she doesn't test on anything not addressed in lecture, problem sets, or the homework problems. Memorize everything she tells you to. The exams aren't that bad, just prepare for them.
the final was really hard. she needs to curve this course. Because I'm someone who's a straight A student, and her class is truly unfair.
Average teacher, gives extra credit but its usually difficult, and there is no curve which is unfortunate because it is an upper level chem course.
She is actually really good at teaching. I learn a lot every class, took the summer class. She is strict but nice. Sometimes she laughs at your "dumb" ques but dw about that. LOTS of extra credit Answer ques in class EC. 3-10 points EC every testincluding final This course is basic math, small memorization, and there is good tutors on youtube too
ABSOLUTE WORST PROFESSOR IN ALL OF BROOKLYN COLLEGE! Stay far far far away, took chem 1 with her and it was an absolute nightmare. Retook the class again with a different professor and passed with such ease. She does not care about anyone and exams are so hard.
Truly dedicated to her class. After every lecture she posts practice problems that you don't have to do but always come in handy when studying for midterms.
Mathias is not what many people think. If you pay attention in class, you will understand what she is saying and the curriculum. DO NOT skip her class, a lot is taught per class and although its a lecture class, its pretty necessary to go to get a good grade. Only graded on 2 midterms & final (STUDY!), gives extra credit points for tests
Took her for environmental chem, Hard grader. the 1st test was horrible multiple chapters and scientific papers. 2nd test easy. Then 10 min solo presentation is easy but she grades hard. The final is ridiculous super hard she had no care to make the final simple. I would not retake it and she does not curve. WORST DECISION EVER TAKING HER
This professor does not care about her students. If you raise your hand, she will give you the dirtiest look I've ever seen. She gives many quizzes, two exams. The final didn't have tricky questions. I had to teach myself most of the topics. Went to her office hours and she couldn't have had a more annoyed face even though I was the only one there
Please stay way from professor Mathias. She is very knowledgeable but isnt a good professor in general. All she does is SPEED through the slides without really explaining anything, and is very robotic and monotoned and never answers questions. Her exams were also extremely difficult and no matter how much I studied, I still did poor.
-everything is in the slides for tests -participate in class lecture for extra credit by doing problems on the board or having right answers to questions -extra credit on test -practice problems in textbook for chem 2and gives some out in pdfs on blackboard for chem 1
She's your average chemistry professor. She teaches you the material & you're expected to understand it whether you like it or not. There is NO extra credit so don't bother. Learn to solve problems from every perspective & group study helps A LOT! I failed first exam but did well on everything else (including lab+recitation) & still received a B.
She's a real gem, she teaches well. Do the questions in the slides and the question she assigns in the textbook and you will do fine. I got an A just by doing that.
Terrible, do not take this class. I took it during covid she made the exams impossible so no one can cheat. Nobody did well on her exams. very boring
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. Taking it during covid online and she makes the test impossible, majority of the class failed with below 40s for the midterm. She is rude and doesn't want to answer any questions.
SHE IS SO RUDE AND HER EXAMS ARE SUPPER HARD. I TOOK HER DURING DISTANCE LEARNING AND SHE NEVER CARES ABOUT HER STUDENTS....! JUST AVOID HER
I took this class during the pandemic and one thing you should be aware of she has HIGH expectations for her students assuming that every student already have prior knowledge in chem. She's very rude, she does not answer questions if she doesn't want to and her exams are extremely difficult despite studying the material. There's no extra credit.
Honestly not a clue what the other reviews are talking about, she makes it clear at the beginning that the best way to prepare is with the textbook practice questions, and if you do those the tests are essentially just the same questions with different numbers.
This professor gave me a bad first impression when I first had her for class, I asked her a simple yes or question and she gave me attitude. Her exams are crazy confusing and difficult, this teacher made have crazy anxiety because of her teaching methods. If it wasn't for Rec and lab I wouldn't have gotten the grade I got. Literally the worse ever
Possibly the most awful professor at bc. She messed up badly with her exams and refused to give students credit for the questions SHE messed up on. If her tone doesn't give it away, rest assured you will know that she doesn't care about her students from her emails. She legitimately responded to students with the words, and I quote, "I don't care."
Literally such a rude person. Won't answer simple questions without an attitude, is just short and nasty with people.
Y'all... this class is just hard esp in an online setting because it's all about visualization. If you can, I suggest buying the model kit. I personally didn't buy one bc I'm cheap and I suffered bc of that. Also she sucks bc all she does is copy and paste the textbook and the class is solely based on the 2 midterms and final :') gl
Decent professor. Her slides are simple to follow and there's a reasonable amount of homework. But her exams are incredibly confusing and difficult, much more difficult than it needs to be. Not a great professor by any means, but not terrible either. Take her if you want, but expect to work hard for your grade.
For a Gen Chem 1 course, she made her tests way difficult than it had to be. Don't expect to learn much during class as she just reads from the openstax slides quickly and doesn't break down many questions.
Just wanted to say, very rude professor. She isn't that difficult at least for chem 1, but incredibly rude.
Truly the nastiest professor I've ever had. Her attitude towards students who are just trying to learn the material makes an already hard subject almost unbearable. When she decides she's in the mood to answer a question someone asks she condescending and blatantly rude in her response. Take her course if you want to hate your life for 4 months.
Her tests are honestly pretty easy, you just have to pay attention. Her grading it not that bad. You have three exams, first two are 40%, and final 60%. You don't have to join class, but if you want to pass, you should join. Each test is about 30-35 questions.
During lectures, she only reads off openstax slides and says there isn't enough time for questions. When she does answer a question, she does so vaguely and condescendingly. Her exams were way too difficult for gen chem, and the problems from the slides/ textbook are not good preparation for them. The only positive is that lectures are recorded.
the worst chemistry teacher in this college.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. She lacks sympathy for her students and has no remorse on the success of her students. Be prepared to learn EVERYTHING by yourself. She will hand you the slides and tell you to do the problems at home. Grades very harshly so it is very hard to get an A. Only way to succeed is know material inside and out.
Lectures are pointless to attend I just studied the topics on my own on youtube and then did her practice questions. She has her own grading scale, so a C was like a 59-65 for my class and an A is above an 85. But, it is like that for a reason. If you want a good grade you really have to put the hours in. Graded on two tests, 6 quizzes and final.
This class is not difficult at all. If you just do the problems she posts after a lecture, you will get good practice and start understanding the material. The problems on the worksheets are similar to the problems she gives on the tests so the tests are not really that hard. This class is graded solely on 2 midterms, a final and recitation quizzes
SHE JUST NOT IT PLEASE DO YOURSELF A FAVOR!!!
Hello all, Im posting this rating as a warning and I dont usually post ratings of my professors. Watch out and be ready for hell. This professor is so uncaring and unbelievable she will not bother to help you if you have questions. Only reads her slides without explanation. Tried her twice both online as well as in person. Stay away!!! Warning!!!
Professor Mathias is by far the worst Professor this institution has ever had, she should get fired for the attitude she gives to young students. If you are here to look at how good or bad this Professor is in order to add or withdraw from this course, please never take this Professor and WITHDRAW as soon as possible before you are penalized for it
Never take this Professor in your life. During class, I heard a student ask for his accommodations and she did not want to respect it and rejected him. She will embarrass you in the middle of class if you are not sure of an answer. Please plan ahead and E-Permit this course if you have to (If she is the only Professor teaching in that semester).
Im withdrawing today! Avoid taking this woman at all costs. You will not pass. She doesnt teach and just reads from slides. Brooklyn College needs to fire her. Its a shame shes the only one available to teach all section. Not everyone took chem in high school, she assumes this. Please dont risk your time money and mental health. Stay away!
Avoid taking this teacher if possible! She is really terrible at teaching. Does not explain the material well at all. She does sample problems in class but doesn't explain what she is doing. Her tests are horrible and some really hard questions were worth 10 points. Many people failed or dropped.
Reads off slides, doesn't elaborate much, and barely provides examples. You will end up having to teach yourself a lot of content and she doesn't seem to care about making students understand. It is a difficult subject, to begin with, but she doesn't make it easier. Makes you memorize a lot and thinks everyone should know things from high school.
Oh boy. At least I was able to get EC in her class cuz that's the only thing going for her. She doesn't explain well and I basically learnt everything from yt videos. I went to ask her a question once and she sighed dramatically and basically told me to go away. Whatever. Take at your own risk and be prepared to spend HOURS studying.
She's an okay professor. Her lectures aren't that bad as some people make them to be. Understanding her inclass examples will basically help you pass the class - all i did was skim the textbook but learn how to apply the formulas through listening to her in class problems. Yes you will need to put in some work, but not impossible at all.
She's not a bad professor in terms of being able to convey information to us competently. She teaches well. Her attitude however, is very, very poor. If you ask a question or attempt to go to her office hours, she will view you as a nuisance and will brush you off. Her exams were fair but difficult. She gave ALOT of extra credit during summer.
She doesn't want students to understand her lecture. All she do is reading off slides and doesn't care to elaborate when asked by other students.
Not good at explaining. She has an attitude lol?
Can't teach if her life depended on it
Dropped class
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR DONT TAKE THIS
Do not take her!!! She does not explain anything you have to teach the material to yourself. You have to learn it before the class to understand a fraction of what she is saying then you have to relearn it or you will be so lost. It was so bad that I had to drop this class.
I didn't mind her. She taught whatever was on her slides and gave us many practice problems including the end of the chapter questions. I had to study and review the material on my own time as well, but that's given for any science/math class. A plus is she gives extra credit for participation which she adds to the tests and the textbook is online.
Worst thing about Mathias is that she can be condescending at times, failing to explain certain students' questions. But apart from that, she's everything one needs to pass. She posts great study material for tests on blackboard, asks questions for students to answer in class, (extra cred) and tests are fair.
had her twice. she teaches at a very fast pace so keep up. some things you will need to learn on your own. nothing to complain about but nothing to praise. gives extra credit points on exams if you answer a question correctly in class. can be condescending can be nice depends on her mood. you dont have to avoid her
She expects you to already be a "A" student in chemistry. She is not understanding, expects you to learn everything very very quickly or else she gets frustrated. Take someone else if you have other choices, or else you will regret it. Not a good explainer, intimidating and gets frustrated with beginner chem students, a very very tough grader.
If you do the homework and ask questions during lectures, she will take the time to explain. Intimidating not so, just greet her with a hello and you will see for yourself! I followed Glaser tutoring on YouTube with the homework and her lectures and definitely saw improvement in understanding. Take it from a 40yr old that learned from Dr. Mathias.
The tests don't always reflect the review sessions she holds. Looking back, I would choose to take another Chem lecture prof for both Chem 1 and 2
She gives extra credit points if you answer questions in class. She does review sessions in class before each exam. She's also pretty funny. The only con is that if you're not taking pre-orgo or orgo with chem 2 the last units would be hard for you bc orgo is a tricky subject and she doesn't do a good job explaining that topic.
She knew what she was doing and she would give a lot of extra credit. But in order to pass her class you have to study hard and make sure that you can find other resources to learn from. She gives a lot of practice but sometimes practice from the textbook and other worksheets would help. The Glaser tutoring channel on youtube was really helpful.
You can do well in her class but do in-class problems and in-text openstax problems. I thought her class was fine and she was an ok teacher, she just has the tendency to run through some chapters she doesn't like. She gives EC if you participate. As a person, she is absolutely horrible. She is primitive and acts as if she's better than you.
Avoid her at all costs. She is the rudest person ever and will make you regret asking the most basic question. Always with an attitude. so hateful, she should just retire if she hates her job and the students this much. Just reads everything off slides. You are on your own.
DO NOT TAKE HER ruined my gpa boring lectures and incredibly rude
She's very dismissive, judgmental, and is almost never available during office hours. The class itself isn't hard but you get demotivated because of these know-it-all med kids around you in competition for extra points. Also, you have to study a lot in your own time to ace. I'm taking the course again in the summer hoping that she doesn't teach it.
The worst professor I had, also the only class I ever dropped, out of 300+ students most failed the first exam the average was 30/100, does not know how to teach, is very pretentious, not accessible outside of class, not approachable, acts as if she is better than others and overall just not a good person. I have never seen her smile once either.
Slides are short, she brushes over things. When she does the problems in class the people answering are the front row students who took AP Chem I or googles the answers as she gives extra credit for participation. Which means its not a good pace if you're new to chem. Even if you're not her class is unecessarily difficult. And she is just mean.
I spent 3 hours studying everyday for this class, and studied 8 hours for 3 weeks before her final and still BARELY passed. Do not recommend.
If you happen to see her, she's the only option you can take for chem. WAIT ANOTHER SEMESTER. Trust me, even if you are premed don't take her. I studied nonstop for this class and I don't even know if I passed. Her tests are terrible, grading is as strict as a military Sargent and please whoever is reading this love your mental health and run.
RUN. she was the only prof teaching chem this semester and I had no option but to choose her. Had to drop the course bc of how poorly I was doing and how difficult she makes her exams. very strict with grading, even with studying its impossible to do well.
Extra credits benefited like 5% of the class. Some questions on the final were not taught or in the final review, she should give us similar type of questions on the finals or give us more practice on word problems in the review. If you can get A in her class, you can easily get A with any1 else with better efficiency, less time wasted on studying.
DONT TAKE HER Coming from a person who takes really great care of their gpa and grades, this lady does not care. Went to office hours to get help from her and got a vibe she didnt want me there and gave me no help. She thinks she runs chemistry. Never met a professor who has no pity towards their student.
Honestly, while this was a tough class, she was a fair professor. She teaches well and is knowledgeable. Its just that the content can be tough, so u have to study and study well. No homework required. just exams + the final + a percentage of your grade from recitation. Her final was actually very close to the review she made! Textbook was free.
Professor brushed over everything, writing out problems and solving them without really explaining how to solve them. This made her lectures very difficult to follow. I was too intimidated to ask for help during or outside of lecture, but according to other reviews, I'm not confident asking would have helped. Rest of class seems in the same boat.
Terrible professor. Very rude. Doesn't even explain the lesson and just writes the answers on the board. When asking for help after class, she gives an attitude. Whatever you do, do not take her class!! I had her for recitation which is the purpose of explaining things but she clearly doesn't know how to do that. Please avoid her class at all cost.
Prof. Mathias is a fair professor. I'd say the majority of the exam questions come directly from class. It's not meant to be an easy class, but it will be manageable if you spend a good amount of time preparing for her exams. Don't fall behind, EC quizzes are given so take advantage of them. Achem is an interesting course if you enjoyed chem 2!
Professor Mathias has a specific teaching style, but engaging with it can work well. The textbook and study tools like Unstuckstudy are helpful for passing the class. She can be condescending, but the tests are fair if you put in the work.
She doesn't care about her students. Each question I asked was met with an extremely rude response and it seemed like all she wanted to do was go home. I did well, but she made analytical chemistry annoying, despite it being a fairly easy subject. I will say that exams and final were fair and there was EC, but lab reports were definitely unfair.
Whatever you do don't take her. Anyone is better than her!!! She's plain rude and expects everyone to just hold the same knowledge as her. She doesn't care a about students or their grades, she rarely answers questions. Does in class EC that the same two people answer every time.
Exams weren't all what we learned in class. some of the content we haven't spoken once about and there are many trick questions. she reads off slides and rushes thru content. she doesn't seem as harsh as some of the comments, just that she isn't great at teaching or understanding. ur gonna have to teach the content to urself.
She is good, its an unorthodox teaching method. Less lecturing and more doing practice problems, read the slides on your own and do her practice worksheets and you will be fine. First half of the class is a lot harder.
She doesnt lecture based off of slides she prefers to do problems instead. Read the notes ahead of time or after the class for a more conceptual understanding. Do her worksheets and you ace easily, first half of class is harder.
