Has a heart but tends to go f-a-s-t. Will show a problem in 2 minutes.Isn't big on using terms or steps/rather you learn by watching her work the problem. 5 timed tests & a final...one more test would be better too much material on tests. quizzes too.
She tends to move thru the info semi-fast but is willing to help if u need it, drops a quiz and a test thats lowest, explains the material very well, i learned a lot from her, makes you do the work but you acutally learn, the test are semi hard so you acutally have to work for your grade.
she's really enthusiastic, and makes the time go by fast. i agree w/everyone else, she moves fast. she has a lot of material on one test, so you have to study for quizzes and tests. she will go over a lot before tests, and is willing to help after class. study gruop is a good idea for her class.
She is owsoeme. She teaches fast but she usually go over it again and again if you have questions. She helps everyone individually in class to make sure everyone is following.
Very enthusiastic about the subject. Seems to understand that this is one of the harder math classes most people will ever take. She goes fast, but answers questions along the way. There is a ton of material on each test, adding one more test would have made the class much more manageable IMHO.
Covers a lot of information in one semester. You have to work for a good grade in this class, but extremely fair. I am very happy I took her because I am now in my 2nd stats class and its a breeze!!! Recommended.
Covers materials very well, gives good handouts, cares for your understanding of the materials, and is understanding of your situation, if something comes up “really cool”. Highly recommended
A very good teacher who want you to learn. She is reasonable on test and quizes, and will do many problems to explain the material.
Excellent teacher! Explains topics very clearly and is willing to go the extra mile to help anyone. Obiovusly, you have to study and do practice problems to do good, like any other math class or nay class in general. She was my favorite math teacher and only wish I could have her as a teacher at the UoM-D, where I transfered.
Roth is a great teacher. I had her for college algebra and trig. I wouldn't say her class is easy, but not becasue of her just becasue math can be hard. If your good at math you'll get an A. If you're okay at math you'll still do good She is flexible with grading. She gives you points for everything you deserve. I am taking her again for Calculus I

One of the nicest teachers I have ever had. She went above and beyond to help me and other students. Her class is rather easy even if your not good in math.
Very understanding! If you have to miss class, LET HER KNOW in advance, and she will most likely email you any notes you missed or send your quiz/test down to the IIC. She has a no make-up policy, but if you communicate with her, she might make an exception. She expects you to be prepared for class, so you your work. GO TO STUDY GROUP!
i loved it. i took class last year and it was a blast to take as a high school senior. she was a good teacher, very helpfull and nice.
Makes the class easy to follow if you do your homework. She is very helpful. Made the class a good one to take.
great teacher, class is hard but doo all the Hwk an you'll be fine.

im sure this rating will mysteriously dissappear in a few days but i guess i will have to re-enter often. See some instructors can delete BAD ratings and that is the flaw with this system...As i said before, dont take her unless you want to bring your gpa down. unclear about what is on the tests and expects you to know everything about the book!!!
One of the nicest professors i've had. One of those classes that if you need something clarified (which you will, b/c she goes real fast and covers a lot of material) you will almost need some outside help, whether it's going into the math lab, tutor, study group or staying after class. Strived to help us do well in her class, and demanded a lot.
not clear about what to study... gave a ton of homework... mysteriously left for maternity leave without warning and without computing my final!!!
I retook Trig in order to boost my gpa, thinking that It wouldn't be as hard the second time around. I was wrong; Mrs. Roth was even more unclear and moved faster than Mrs. Durak. Again I recommend not taking her class and recommend looking at Mrs. Aratari.
I dislike math with a passion. I suck at it. However, Mrs. Roth made this class easy to follow, and the content could not have been explained any more thorough or clearer. (I joined this site just to comment on her!)If I can pass her class, ANYONE can.
still believes punitive grading is the safe way to make students learn.
she is the worst teacher ever she goes to fast and does not care if the student fails the class she just wants to get her job done and always arrives late do not take her she is by far the worst
She is by far the Worst instructor I have ever had. Lectures EXTREMELY fast and then gives a quick "any questions?" while you're still scrambling to catch up on notes. ALWAYS arrives 5-10 minutes late and lectures beyond the scheduled class time to make up. HORRIBLE TEACHER!!!!
She always arrive late too clase for some odd reason. You definetly have to work hard for an A grade. Once you learn her handouts and do the Assigments question you will do find. Oh and if she goes too fast just ask her to slow down a bit. And also go to Study group I thought it was so helpful when I attend.
she talks very fast. the handouts she gives arent helpfull at all. and shes always late to class, and keeps students late after class
This teacher can be a little fussy sometimes. Once, I was late to her class and it was a quiz day and by the time I got to class, it was already over. I took it anyway and she gave me a "0" because it was late. All of her quizzes and exams are always closed book/closed notes and she doesn't even allow us to use scrap paper. She can be challenging.
All of the quizzes in her class were timed (about 15-20 minutes, I think). When it was almost over, she would say, "Got another minute left" and then when it was over, she would say, "All right, turn them in." What if we weren't done yet?!
The online section is set to make you fail!!! and she does litle to change that fact. She grades very hard, and give very little partial credit. Take Stats in a classroom, and not hers
The class isn't easy if u don't do homework and attend her lectures. She is always willing to help and her exams are fair.
Seriously this teacher is the most amazing teacher in the world. I HATED math with all of my heart and failed it in high school just 2 months before but i totally aced her class I got A's on every test. She is so nice and helps you with everything and i continue to take her!!
Calc 1 is hard in itself but this she does not change that at all. You are pretty much on your own, she only has 2 hour of OH, per week which is ridiculous for a summer accelerated class. Book is useless. She doesn't post grades online. Talks waaay too fast. When your slipping, no extra credit or supportive words....just good luck.
Very hard class on it's own, she talks way too fast. text book no help what so ever. no extra credit, she does not support you in class, she expect you to understand every word she say, don't recommend her for no one, take it somewhere else or with different teacher.
She is a nice person and has a bubbly personality. that being said, i dont like her as a teacher. She goes very fast and is behind on her own curriculum. if you come to her with an absence before hand she wont let you take a test early or late. she wont allow decimal use because she "doesnt like them". uncooperative, fast, and poor teaching method.
she expects you to know everything the moment she says it. if you dont know the answer she will give the class a look that says "what are you, dumb or something?" I left class everyday and had to teach myself from the book. she goes at lightning speeds with a 2 second "any questions?" and doesnt care. doesnt give enough time to finish exams either.
This teacher, is a very uplifting, upbeat teacher with high expectations. First off, she doesn't like decimals, so you cannot use them. Talks and writes extremely fast and i had to learn most of what was on the tests from patrickjmt on youtube. She also expects you to come directly from the previous math class and to know everything that was tought
This professor is the second worse math teacher I have had in my entire life. She rushes through the material, constantly prompting for questions before you even have a chance to think of any. She has 5 tests, 5 quizes, and a final that make up your entire grade. She gives a test the class day before the final. Overall, would never take her again.
Her tests are ludicrously hard. tested us on material that she introduced one class period prior. Expects needless, pointless memorization of truly obscure formulas. Take her only if you are a masochist and/or want the ultimate math challenge...I sure don't, it's OCC...not Harvard. Your retention will be zilch thanks to "calculator" teaching style.
I actually enjoy going to this class. She is very upbeat, involves the class in lectures, and is always willing to go over material that is not understood well. Her exams are pretty difficult, even for someone who understands the material. She even let me take an exam early so that I wouldn't miss my daughter's play at school :)
Very peppy. She has a speaker fanny pack microphone thing. Puts note packets online for you to print off and goes over it in class. Go to every class, do the homework. Before a test, do practice problems and ask questions before the test and you should get a good grade.
Wow! Dont know where to start...at first I thought she was really great. Fanny pack speaker box and all! As the semester progressed and we reached new material it seemd as she was trying to cram 2 much into each lecture. There are 5 exams and they cover so much material and there is too many ways to do each problem that you dont kno what she wanted
Mrs. Roth is very eccentric, but I enjoyed her class very much. Getting an A in her class can be a bit challenging, especially since there's no real extra credit and her tests for this class were difficult, but if you put in the effort, she will try to help you in any way you can. You just have to make the effort.
One of the best math professors I've ever had. People complaining about difficulty need to realize that calculus is a difficult subject no matter who the teacher is. She was always very clear about what she expected, and explained things very well.
She crams the materials in 2 hours only, I don't know why we have to pay 4 credit hrs in her class. Although she is neat , she is unhelpful. In the test, she hits U with very difficult questions and gives U limit time avarage about 1.75 hr. Some times she gets confused in solving some questions that she already put in the test.
She is uncooperative. Her tests are very difficult and she doesn't give enough time to solve the questions during the test. No, extra credits in her class because she doesn't care whether you pass or fail in the test.
She presents information, she doesn't teach anything. She's a terrible person to be teaching math and speaks WAY too fast. I'm so irked I had her as an instructor because her poor teaching style will cost me. Please, do not take her. You will regret it...like so many have. Also, she is unsympathetic. She doesn't care if you pass or fail.
teaches a little fast but its clear and accurate. great notes and gives extra help when asked. gives note packets that can be printed and brought to class.if you come to every class take notes and do your homework you can pass her class.
She is one of the best math teachers I ever had! It's challenging to get an A, but it's possible if you work hard... She explain everything even though she talks fast... She is always helpful if you need help, always answers all questions. I loved using lecture packets that she gives! I loved her class!
Hard grader but excellent teacher. She is very clear about the material and follows the syllabus.
She is very knowledgeable about the subject . her notes and the way she explain the material are very clear, fair grader on the test. I like the notes she post on D2L before and after each lecture. great person and mentor at the same time. YES , she doesn't offer any extra credit, yet i think if students review her notes and do the HW, EASY PASS....
Not helpful when you ask something, she seems lost in space! Harsh grader and if you care about your grades you will regret taking her. She will ruin your GPA. And that's a promise. No extra credit and no chances of fixing any of your mistakes, even thou she makes plenty of mistakes while teaching!!! STAY AWAY!
She talks too fast, her lectures are confusing, and she assigns way too much homework about 100 questions from the textbook which are graded and extremely hard. I learned more about Linear Algebra in 30 minutes of online videos during homework than the whole 2 hours of her class lectures. After 3 weeks, I dropped the class. I don't recommend her.
Amazingly helpful kind woman!
All over the place with the lectures and no opportunities to improve your grades ... Don't take her if your grades are important to you
One of the better professors I have had. She made linear pretty easy but get ready to do proofs. Overall great professor.
I can say so much right now. She is hard! She gives you some off the wall problems on exams. I have been in college for two years and never failed an exam until I took her. If you are in your last semester at OCC and you want to walk out knowing you passed then don't take her. Her final is easy . Seems like she trying to prove that she can do math.
Mrs. Roth was the best professor I've ever had. She has you print off notes online and fill them out in class. She drops lowest test and quiz scores. Uses a microphone so everyone can hear her. Very helpful. Loved her. Elementary algebra
Very intelligent professor! She speaks with a microphone and has filled in lecture notes. It was my second time taking Calc 1 and it was much easier to pass because she is very clear with her notes.
Lol, Roth well "Let's play". She gives you almost every problem in the book, expects you to just remember everything from previous math classes, and is very very very cocky. "There's no mistakes on my tests" "Just know everything". I recommend only if you are using this class to transfer like me. Otherwise, you'll be working.
Linear algebra is just hard, there's no way around it. Glad I took it with her rather than some other OCC instructors. She writes up notes for you but she will move at a quick pace. Expect 10-12 hours/week to do all the homework. Lots of homework but you need to do it all if you want an A. Her exams could have been a lot harder than they were.
My opinion with Roth is that you kind of have to have a truly terrible teacher before you appreciate her. She is a hard grader but she gives as much partial credit as she can. She also puts all the notes online. Yes she can be snarky sometimes but compared to the other professors at occ, she's one of the better choices.
Statistics is far from my favorite subject but Roth was spectacular. She tried to keep the students attention, she was very thorough in her lectures and she cares. If you do the work, you get the grade. There was even one day that I was really sick and she told me to go home and to make up the quiz later.
She's a fine instructor but I think it's a little rude to show up 15 minutes late every day and then get offended when people leave when the class time is over and she's still lecturing. She goes extremely fast and gets a little rude when you ask her to slow down. She's the best that OCC has got and gives partial credit so just try to keep up.
I really a got a good foundation due to Professor Roth because she goes in depth with her lectures. She also uploads her notes, which is nice if you are absent a day from class, and if you are bad at taking notes. I would like to add Professor Roth is really down to earth, so expect the lectures to be fun and exciting also.
Roth is an absoltutely incredible professor, probably the best I've had at OCC. The way she sets up the class is nice because she uploads all materials to D2L and her tests are exactly what is in her notes, not the homework. I highly recommend that you take her over any other math professors. Ignore the low rating she is the best there is at OCC.
I highly recommend not taking her. She teaches too fast for any person to understand. 10-15 of my classmates dropped the class already. Every chapter takes about 5-10 minutes for her to teach and she expects you to understand it. She answers questions too fast to understand also. She doesn't review for tests and starts new material the day before.
She is an incredible teacher, I can tell you that. She knows her stuff and will explain how to do a problem if you simply ask. She does teach lecture at a fast pace, but that should be expected considering this is a COLLEGE course. Her syllabus schedule is easy to read. Be caught up on the homework every week and Youll do just fine.
She's really funny and kind. VERY homework heavy but honestly if you're good at math you can skip it as she doesn't check it for credit. My suggestion would be to print the lecture packets and fill those out in class. Doing the Practice Exams are great for making sure you're good for the test. Do all the challenge assignments! You wont regret it!
If you don't have a strong foundation from intermediate alg this class is going to be difficult, especially at the extremely fast pace she goes. You print off lecture notes and exams cover the notes pretty well. Stay on top of hw, thats what is going to make you pass the class. Wouldn't take her again but she's fine just be prepared to put work in
She is the best. Do not believe the bad reviews. I graduated from high school 20 years ago and I am from another country, so English is my second language. I was really bad at math in school. When I came to Mrs. Roth class, I thought it would be to hard for me, but I followed her directions, did my homework, didnt miss classes and got A. Take her
I suffered the first few weeks, but then when I got used to her learning style, I did well. She is a great professor; knows a lot of math and will make you good at it. The only way to get points is by tests and quizzes. Pay attention in class, do your homework( it is a lot), you will be fine. Also go to her office hours (she is of great help).

she is hard but nice teacher, her quizzes dose not match the homework
Terrible. She gives all that homework but don't even check it. Teaching skills were horrible. Five exams five quizzes. she don't drop the Lowest test grade and no extra credit. the way she grade is petty. Majority of class in tutoring. she does not give minuses so I guess thats a plus. If you have a hard time comprehending do not take her class.
DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT take this teacher for linear algebra. She makes not too hard material so complicated. She would take points off in tests for nothing. STAY AWAY.
Avoid .
Prof. Roth was an outstanding teacher. Normally I wouldn't fill one of these out, but she deserves credit for doing a great job. Lectures are in-depth, but still easy to follow. She also provides fill-in-the-blank notes which are a huge help... you'll understand the whole chapter almost immediately after reading them. Best math prof I've had
Frequently late for up to twenty minutes even for tests, which she makes up for by rushing through the material, or by extending the class period when students have buses to catch. Also won't grade homework problems she didn't see, or give feedback on them, and will attack you for not having labeled page numbers on your hw instead.
she came twenty five minutes late to our exam and didn't even give us extra time to finish it. Test problems looked nothing like homework. Avoid unless you're okay with paying for 4 hours but only getting 3 and a half hours
No time to finish the exams and you're having a quiz when you aren't having a test. 5 homework problems will be selected out of about a hundred, and even the tiniest mistake will drop your grade by 20%
She makes you read 400 pages or so of math and we have to memorize every single detail for the tests
Her lectures and notes are very informative. If you want a good grade, expect studying 8-10 hours a week outside of class by doing the required HW problems from the book. Her tests are not as hard as they could be and are all based on the examples from her notes. She is very forgiving on grading and wont take many points because of small mistakes.
Absolutely horrific professor. Comes in 15 minutes late every single class(She even did on an exam day, resulting in almost no one completing the exam), assigns about 800 problems over the semester, yet only grades like 3 RANDOM problems for each homework turn in and takes off a ton of points for trivial things on tests/quiz's. STAY AWAY!
Worst professor in my entire journey. If you do a 10 step problem and get the correct final answer she would still take 25% off just because you missed a single negative sign. She's worst at grading and is pretty much setting students for failure, doesn't inspire students at all, but only cares about taking points off. get ready to do lots of HW.
i don't like how on tests she makes us show work for every problem. It takes time away from actually completing the test. I wish her tests were multiple choice, or had questions that said do not run test. If she had questions that said do not run test, it would save me a lot of time. wish she would do that for the final
Very picky, Inconsiderate, only cares about rushing through material and students can go to H, as long as she covers 3 chapters in 1 hours that's fine to her and doesn't care whether students comprehend it or not. Gives 5 mins of class for questions and anything else is dismissed because she has to go back to lecture and rush through it.
Professor Roth was one of the hardest Ive had so far. She keeps on giving like 40 homework problems per chapter (2-3 chapters per lesson), and she graded them. She chose 3 problems to grade which I felt as if she was skimming to find anything wrong so she could take points of. Quizzes were easy, and the tests were too long. She does come late too.
At one point during class she mentioned she liked to see things fail. A person with that mentality shouldn't be a teacher.. avoid this thing if you value your GPA
The worst professor of any OCC campus, arguably the worst in existence. Takes off points for trivial errors. Consistently late every class. Says she likes to watch things fail. Her husband has cancer and she takes her anger/depression out on her students. Assigns over 600 problems over the semester and always picks the one you messed up. Awful
Works hard to prepare notes for her classes. Made her linear algebra class proof based, which is good for future math majors. Fast at returning assignments and tests, and her tests never included material not presented in the homework, lecture notes, or quizzes. Late to an exam on one occasion, but was otherwise very punctual.
Mrs. Roth is a great professor. Linear algebra is a hard class! This makes majority of the class bitter about not passing it. Prof answers questions before lecture starts, and before quizzes and tests. However, don't ask a long question before the test starts or you won't have time to finish it. Tests are easy and were close to lecture notes and hw
While attendance was not mandatory, I attended every lecture and she was late on every single lecture except two lectures she was on time, besides that usually 10-20 minutes late to every class lecture even on an exam which caused majority of students not be able to finish the exam. Makes things harder than they are and assigns huge amount of HW.
Taking her class is an investment in time, energy, effort. But if you put in the work you will understand the material better then with most other profs at OCC. Know everything she talks about on lecture notes and youll be fine. Exams are designed to test knowledge, not be hard for the sake of ruining your grade. Very helpful in office hours.
Professor Roth was a great teacher and she helps you understand the material much better. If you are stuck on the test, she will guide through the equation, but she doesn't give the answer obviously. She cares for her students and wants everyone to pass. Her final covered everything through the semester and her tests relate to what she teaches.
Assigns a ton of problems for homework leaving us with almost no time to studying for the exam.
Just started the semester and hw is a lot to be done in a short period of time. No consideration for student effort. Rushed through material and went past the end of class time just to get where she wanted so she can quiz us on the sections "covered" before quiz resulting in some students missing the buss to go home.
Worst teacher Ive ever had
beware, tests are impossible to pass, if you get a 70 you'll be lucky. Hard tests as well as her grading is very strict and will mark you down half a question's worth for missing a number.
Makes you work on 200 problems for homework and only grades 5 of them. half the test looks from the homework and 50% is made up by her to fail students. will not respond to student questions in a nice manner so if you have a question keep it to yourself and save the embarrassment.
Her teaching method is terrible, and makes exams impossible. do not take her, everyone dropped after first exam.
She is just kind of all over the place, exams don't reflect the material that much, she doesn't lecture on the material, she never seems personable, and watch out if she's in a bad mood. She will put students on the spot for asking simple questions that can be answered with a yes or no. I urge you not to take her unless you are desperate.
Took her a couple of years ago for linear algebra, I had to work really hard. But she guides you well along the way.
Took her a year ago, her lectures were long and boring, homework was harder than exams, her grading scale was horrible. Save your GPA and stay away from her.
Will assign 100+ homework problems yet her exam will have proofs that she never lectured on, nor were they in the homework problems. Impossible to get an A in an exam, best save your GPA and avoid her.
Class is somewhat difficult but it's a higher math class so that's understandable. get ready to do lots of homework, expect the unexpected on the exam because she will come up with several ways to have a reason to deduct points off.
Don't waste your time doing the HW because she will quiz and test you on things she doesn't thoroughly cover during lecture. Spends 2 hours lecturing on something very simple but on exam she tests on a much harder level.
Too many HW problems.
Not an easy class. The quizzes and hw assignments barely helped your overall grade. The exams are harder than what she teaches in class. She is willing to help during office hours but students shouldn't need to visit a professors office after each session. She writes and talks too fast. You have to be a math genius to get an A or B.
I would not take her class. She is not a nice person personally, and her teaching style is not compatible with a LOT of the students. She teaches and does shortcuts without explanations while solving a problem which causes me and others to ask questions. She grades the exams heavily and never offers extra credit. BAD!
Fast lectures, skips some parts yet she tests us on everything even if she didn't cover it.
There is so much material she expects you to know. Her tests are complicated. I easily fall asleep while I'm in her class because of how much she talks.
The only grades you will receive in this class are on exams or extra credit. The class is lecture style, making it harder to learn.
I feel I learn more from the book than I ever have learned during her lectures. She doesn't know how to teach a 101 class. I get that she's excited and wants to teach us advanced stuff but I hardly know any basics because this is the first terrible teacher i have ever taken. The workload for reading and studying is not worth it.
Is very nit picky with answers. So discouraging... i recommend taking anything but this class
This class had the hardest material I have ever seen. Professor Roth's teaching style made it even harder. No curves for any assignments, tests, or quizzes. 5 sections of homework due in a week, with only 5 out of the 80 problems graded for complete correctness. Lectures long and hard to follow. She did allow me to drop after the drop date though.
Incredibly long final exam, It should definitely be shorter.
Professor Roth is by no means easy. However, if you put in the effort and focus on learning the theory, you will know more about linear algebra than just about anyone else who took another professor. She teaches in a conceptual way, rather than having student calculate ad nauseam. Shes an outstanding professor, as long as you dedicate yourself.
Roth is one of the worst professors in math history.
Everyones teaching style is different but she wants us to figure it ourselves 1st. She would be a great teacher if she taught the homework before hand bcus I know she knows the material. Then we wont have to ask questions she doesnt want to fully explain to us. Shes making it difficult & is unwilling to teach to her full potential.
Somewhat difficult tests but not impossible. Homework is not mandatory however if you dont do the homework you will fail. i recommend taking this class with someone else but keep in mind no matter where you take it calc 2 is difficult.
Makes everything more complicated than it is. Has no logic in her teaching style and is rude. Avoid her not only to save your GPA but to also have another professor who will actually teach you the right way.
Tests not parallel with her class notes. No correlation whatsoever. Avoid if you care to understand math especially if you are a math major.
she is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. she gives you so much homework and she expects you to cancel your plans so you can do the homework. she acts like her class is number one priority. as soon as the semester ends, be aware that she WILL pile up so much studying and so much homework for you.
Besides being really bad at teaching, She has no regards for anything whatsoever and thinks that nobody can criticize her work to the point where filling up the professor evaluation sheet she says "It doesn't matter what you write in these because the dean doesn't read them anymore anyways, he has me read them and that's it". terrible management.
Gets bothered when someone asks her simple questions. If a student doesn't understand the material and asks basic questions she should explain them and move on, instead she answers with attitude and looks down on students who don't see the material as clear as her who's been teaching it for 20+ years.
Definitely the worst math class I've ever had at OCC. The 12 week version of the course shouldn't even be taught with how much she packed into it. The only reason I did well was because I have no life and, overall, am pretty strong in math. I would highly recommend waiting and taking this from a better professor, especially one from the RO campus.
Mrs. Roth is one of the most intelligent, caring professor one will encounter. She definitely cares for her students to succeed because if she didnt she would not give out this much homework, and the reason she gives this much homework is for students to fully understand the subject. She is actually down to earth once you get to know her!
Her class is hard and you definitely have to work for your grade, but shes fair. There is a lot of homework, but it really helps you understand the material. She definitely knows what shes doing and I learned a lot in her class.
For GOD SAKE. Please do not take this professor. Her Tests are not related to the Lecture and homework at all.
Professor Roth was a real gem. She was readily available outside of class, and was really great at explaining information that we had trouble with. She really cared that we understood the material, and was realistic about the amount of work we would need to put in to succeed. She was great, I wouldn't want to take stats with any other prof.
The last comment that he or she posts is completely false. Roth is very unfair on the tests and it's not related to the lectures at all.
A professor's job is to break down the material to make it easier to understand by students, this is the quality that I did not see in this professor and therefore she fails.
She's confused on the real definition of an EXAM. She lectures one thing that is a very easy example, comes the exam she tests on the hardest unrealistic material. She caused many students to fail for no reason making their lives difficult. Stay away and withdraw from her class as soon as you get a chance if you care about your GPA, time and money.
Not the most engaging class, a lot of self-teaching took place before each test.
Please do yourself a favor and take any other professor but Roth if you have the chance. The homework doesnt even slightly compare to the hard exams she gives out. You will end up putting in a ton of hours to get at best a C grade. She also makes you do these proofs that have already been proven and that youll never use in your life. DONT TAKE HER!
I took Diff Eqs online this summer. Joann's lectures were clear and organized and notes were easy to follow. Diff Eqs is tough, but she made it manageable. Exams were take home but DEFINITELY required effort. I can't speak on behalf of her in-person class, but she did a great job of teaching such a tough class online in the middle of a pandemic!
the last comment he/she wrote is a complete lie if you have no other classes than her take it at another institution you will thank me later
For the love of sake, do not take her you will regret it. He tests are not like the homework or the notes at all. They are impossible to do well unless you are a math genius. Please please please take someone else if you can.
Professor Roth is truly a master in her trade; the lectures are structured in such a way that the concepts are easy to digest so you dont really need to have a strong background in math. Do all of the problems she suggests and your golden. By far the best math professor I have ever taken.
Do not take this professor. the previous comment was false and 100% made by the professor herself. She is a tough grader, her tests are TOUGH, aren't related to homework or lectures. She is very rude, and just wants the money. Look at all reviews before registering for a math class!
I have taken all my math classes at this campus and know very well at this point who U need to take your math classes with. This professor is an AMAZING teacher. She tests you on what she teaches, and has best & accurate notes. It is UR responsibility to UR self to pick up the slack, study and do your homework. Use Office hr & tutoring for help.
On average between the textbook assignments, the reading, notes & quizzes, it took me 12-15 hours a week to do homework, only then to struggle on the exams. I think she is probably a great prof in person, but online I understood almost nothing.
Dont take this professor. Taking a class with her will only waste your time, money and effort. Im now a semester late because of her class. She teaches you the basic concepts then tests you on the really difficult level 10 material. She doesn't give enough time on her midterm or final exams and I failed because of it. Take someone else instead.
I swear this teacher is on a mission to fail all of her students. At first we had 30 students then at the last 3 weeks we had 6 students. Exams are impossible to get an A on. I swear I studied 6 hours a day for her class alone just to get at best a D. Her final and midterm are ridiculously hard and she gives you little time. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS
I took Roth for calc 2 during my fall 2020 semester. The class was difficult, so it required a lot of diligence on my part. All her lectures were great and she uploaded all the notes every time, so I didnt even have to take my own and just followed along. The homework was crucial for surviving, and she was able to meet outside class when needed.
You'll get a weekly assignment but only have 1 day each week to do it since it opens and closes in 24 hours. You'll get quizzes that test over 50 hw problems but only grade about 5 of them. And then you'll get midterms and the final exam that teaches way beyond the concept of her lecture. If you're a genius at math, It's do-able. Otherwise, avoid.
Gives simple examples in her notes but gives hard problems on tests and assignments. Made this class harder than it needed to be. She gives very vague steps in her notes so it's difficult to follow along. Be prepared to do a lot of self teaching. If you're willing to grind for hours a week to barely get a C, feel free, otherwise DON'T TAKE HER!
I had this teacher for Calc 3 and now for DEQ. I can honestly say she is one of the fastest lectures I've had. Needless to say, she knows her stuff, but sometimes assumes that you know your stuff too; that leads her to skip steps in lecture notes which become very hard to follow. Because of that, I can't give her a high rating.
Where do I even start?! I have never written a review before however, writing one for professor Roth was a must. To start off the class, she mentions how if you work a full time Job, that you should quit, first red flag. Her lectures are very quick and when it comes time to take the exam, the questions are way more difficult! DO NOT TAKE HER PLEASE
Tests are meh. Brutal grader (partial credit exists but don't expect much) Fast-paced lectures, posts lectures online. Great for Math majors. Engineering majors should avoid. Graded homework (expect 5+hr/day) Needed extra resources for Proofs. *This rating reflects the professor and the course, which is assumed to be constructed by the professor.*
Only complaint is that the HW is unfair; there's always at least 5-6 problems from the book that cannot be solved just by referencing the book/notes and that there is too much HW. You'll never be able to meet expectations in that regard. She's really good at dumbing things down and doesn't usually give unfair questions on exams. Proof-based course!
lots of homework; few lecture videos; exams cover a lot of material and are very difficult
dont take this pos
Dont take this professor you will fail period
She gives partial credit on tests, and she notices when you get confused, so write notes saying you know what to do, but not how. I went in to talk about the midterm and what I got wrong and she showed me how to fix everything. She is very nice if you put in some effort and talk to her. Grades very quickly and is usually late to class 5ish mins.
Avoid her at all costs if you don't want to ruin your GPA. She would make tests that are absolutely completely different from the practice tests. She would even sometimes put a question in a test that's not even part of the current curriculum, but she would defend that the question was covered in previous classes like pre-calc or algebra.
RUN FROM THIS TEACHER AS FAST AS YOU CAN Her lectures are way too heavy with a lot of material. She moves very fast, she just mentions a concept briefly and moves on to a next one Her hw, lectures and tests are not correlated at all. You are very lost in tons of material and don't know what to study for her tests. BAD TEACHER
I read a lot of reviews about how her exams were nothing like the homework but that's not true at all in my class. She teaches a concept, the homework goes over problems that are set up the same and then the exams are also set up the same. She gives partial credit which helps but the class is still very hard, she's also very helpful outside of class
I had to retake every math class to pass them before Linear Algebra because math is not my strong suit and this is the first math class I've passed the first time taking it. She lectures fast and gives a lot of home work but she teaches the concepts very well and is accessible for questions outside of class. Definitely would take her again
Last 2 comments i believe she rated herself just to get more students to make them fail. I've had her for linear algebra years ago and let me tell you. Just avoid this P.O.S. She gives the exams that are impossible to do well on it. Also a ton of homework but its only graded by a few things. If you are reading this Roth. Maybe you should RESIGN.
Her lectures are heavy but you don't have time to look at the clock as she is a fast talker. Recommend printing the lecture notes. She is super nice and really helpful. Her tests are super clear and understandable as to what she is asking you.
Horrible professor. Speaks insanely fast during her 2 hour long lectures, grades intensely. Expects knowledge of all previous math courses from Geometry -> Linear Algebra. If you're an engineer and not a math major, do NOT take Linear Algebra with this professor. The course is 80% theory, 20% actual application. Find someone else to take this class
I wrote the last rating and would like to correct: I said she required knowledge of all previous math courses. I do not mean general knowledge, but specific equations you should remember from 7th grade onwards from every single math course; Geometry, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Calc 1-2. Good luck with this horrid professor.
This professor is extremely nice and replies to emails fast. However, this class is NOT for everyone. There were 750 points in this class. 50 for A LOT of HW, 300 for midterm, 400 for final. Midterm and final you are not aloud anything besides a calculator (so you have to memorize everything including equations). She does give half credit though.
Learning a different language is better than learning math from this teacher. The hours of modules for homework don't even count for credit. Never checks in on failing students. DO NOT take this class unless you want to forget. She expects you to memorize every formula in this class; it wastes money, time, and effort.
The grade is heavily based on the 3 in-person exams. Every week, there are 2 hw w/ unlimited tries + 1 timed quiz. Exams are similar to lecture video questions! The textbook is useless. You'll mostly self-teach from videos, so take notes. The class can quickly become stressful, and there's a lot of material. It's not impossible to get an A/B tho.
The class is tough, but the professor explains concepts well. Utilize Unstuck ai and other resources to stay on top of the fast-paced homework and exams. Attendance is mandatory, and the textbook is used extensively. Overall, a challenging yet rewarding math course.
This prof is horrible. Her tests are not like the examples we do in class the exam is much harder and kind of confusing. Lots of hw plus hw Quiz plus assignment. Her final is longer than regular exams and is cumulative and she doesn't tell you what sections will be on it just to know everything from chapter 1 to chapter 10. Good Luck to whoever.
1. Realized she forgot to put a unit on our quiz and told us not to expect it, just to add it on anyway 2. Rushes and makes mistakes frequently (typos on tests and expects us to still solve) 3. "Gets bored" with simpler questions so make sure you are an expert at trig 4. Expects you to pretty much already know how to do calculus
Here is the thing, many of the people I was in class with NEVER spoke & NEVER asked questions. She asked if we had questions before class began, she asked if we had questions after she completed a section during lecture, and asked if we had questions after lecture ended. Prof. Roth is AMAZING, but YOU have to put in effort too. Its Calc...its hard!
This class is tough but it's the calculus not the teacher fr. There are 4 tests during the course but it actually made final exam much easier. Exams are based on exercises she did during lectures. Homework is ungraded, so it's optional. I got an A without doing any homework, just practiced the class printouts. She also gave many extra credits
This professor explains linear algebra concepts really well, and I enjoyed her class. The exams are difficult—not because she grades harshly, but because the material is challenging and involves a lot of proving and disproving theorems. I didn't pass, but that isn't her fault. The content is taught fairly; I just struggled to grasp the theorems.
