If you are reading this then it isn't too late. Please heed this warning and find another teacher. This whole class is self taught, she doesn't teach anything. Expect hours and hours of homework a week from this class, plus hours of online lecture to watch. You will not have any free time if you take this class. This is the WORST teacher
Very difficult course. She doesn't really teach and expects you to know everything prior to coming to class. Homework is graded based on accuracy. Probably the hardest class I've ever taken. If you take this class be prepared to be in office hours 24/7.
Horrible. Don't bother with this woman. If you are a masochist who just loves to torment yourself, then by all means take this class with her. You won't even do decent. A horrible grader. Wont even curve exam grades if the entire class fails to answer the same problem that is worth a major portion of the grade. Expects you to know everything.
If you want to sleep quick, watch her math videos.
Math 271 and 272 are tough courses. Joanna however is really great and makes sure you understand the material. In 271 it can be hard to grasp how her class works and it is much harder but sticking with her in 272 she is amazing and will go the extra mile for you! Come to class and do the homeworks from the book (there's never too much at a time).
I took her online and it was arguably the worst course I've ever taken. She makes this subject a lot harder than it needs to be. The workload throughout the week was ridiculous to say the least and exams consisted of the most intricate problems only. It's like you were being set up to fail. Sometimes she gave wrong material to study too. AVOID HER!
Had to drop this class from how ridiculously difficult it was.
SO much homework and the homework is graded on correctness. She doesn't really teach you anything. She will have us go up to the board and work out problems, then just move on without explaining the correct way to do the problem. She is very specific on the method of doing the problem and will mark it wrong if it isn't her method of doing it. AVOID
AVOID. The workload was ridiculous and I spent hours every week only to fail. She made the tests unnecessarily hard and you had to label in sentence form each step. Did not care that I was failing and never offered help.
DON'T TAKE HER! Basically you have to spend at least 3+ to do homework and quizzes online every week. And usually they are due on Saturdays on My Math Lab. There are a lot of homework in this class but it's only 15% of your overall grade. And she grades tests extremely hard- you have to explain each of your steps in sentences in the way she wanted.
AVOID. She does' teach in class. The whole class is based on watching YouTube videos that she had recorded years ago. And for tests, you have to write her like a paragraph of explanation of your answer. Sometimes she doesn't grade on your steps but the accuracy of your answer. She had cancelled classes last min few times for her personal reasons.
Most people come into the class thinking it will be an easy A. If that is you, don't take the class. I went into her office hours as much as I could and to the LA. It might be the hardest class I have ever taken but most people who complain about her are those who didn't turn in homework, didn't study, & are lazy.(GO TO OFFICE HOURS TO PASSSS!!)
She doesnt know how to teach. The class was so badly organized. She would cancel classes whenever she wanted too.
if you enjoy group work in a math class then I guess she's okay, she doesn't teach much and the makes you do group work. Because of her lack of teaching you and your group are left clueless to figure it out for yourselves and then when the exam comes she marks it wrong, not because the answer is wrong but because you didn't do it her way.
Joanna was one of the best teachers that I have ever had but it is a very difficult class. You have to work for a good grade in this class. Many people do not like her because of how much work she gives and how detailed it is but if you want to be an elementary teacher you need to know this stuff. The knowledge is definitely worth the work.
Joanna makes everything so difficult and the homework takes me 3 hours (I'm not kidding) per week to complete and there's a lot of it. The math itself isn't hard, but the process of explaining is tedious. I did learn a lot but I also had to put in a lot of work and visited the TA twice a week. It is a teach yourself kinda class. I would avoid her!!
Joanna is literally the nicest lady you will ever meet. Yes, there is tons of homework (but realistically it pretty easy). There are 3 exams followed by a group final. I suck at math but went to office hours weekly and reached out to Joanna when I didn't understand something. She is very willing to work with you. If I can do it, you can do it!
If you are thinking about taking her online class over summer DO NOT do it. She assigns way too many homeworks and quizzes and is an incredibly tough grader. If you literally put the right answer in a spot that doesnt tickle her fancy you will get points taken off. You have to give up a ridiculous amount of time to pass this class.
SHES THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER. She is beyond caring and she will go out of her way to make sure you are learning the material. Yeah there is a lot of homework but learning math comes with a lot of practice. She offers retakes on some of her quizzes. She's the best professor I had in gmu and I love her teaching style.
The online class doesn't have a textbook, you watch videos of her working problems and take notes. There's a lot of homework but spread them out so you're not cramming. She's very responsive to emails and willing to help you. I always emailed her with questions and she's very willing to help you
Prof. Jauchen is a very down to earth and understanding professor. While she does give a lot of work, she is extremely accessible and very easy going. Students that are complaining about lots of homework and struggling probably did not put in the effort to communicate with her.
Joanna is nice but her class is unorganized and hard to follow. She doesnt tend to provide a lot of feedback, and her grading of homework and tests are very harsh. Several exams we took had questions that did not accurately reflect what we learned in class, and were too complicated to finish in time- a majority of the class would get below 50%
This isn't an online class, but majority of your work will be online. She has YouTube videos for all of her lessons and you can work from home, but you spend hours in class. In 3 hours, she teaches maybe a quarter of a lesson. If you're looking for a class that uses time efficiently, this aint it. its an easy A if you have prior knowledge so beware
I personally really liked her as a teacher. She gives a lot of homework, but it was great practice. She's good at showing you how to do things and telling you what you need to know for exams through lots of review sessions. I was never really good at math before taking this class but she's a real sweetheart that can help.
Nice person yes, but horrible professor. She doesn't teach in class, so you will learn things on your own online. SO MUCH HOMEWORK during the week, you have to do it or your grade will suffer. A time consuming and hard class with quizzes every week. She puts you in groups (you can't choose your mates) to work and grades you on collaboration.
Jauchen is knowledgeable but I found her impatient with her students. I must admit that a lot of the students didn't seem to put in the work outside of class, but despite having learned most of the information prior to taking this class I found some of her explaining confusing, she couldn't seem to answer my questions.
3 hour class in which only a quarter of the lesson is taught. She post youtube videos for the rest of the lesson which are lengthy & unhelpful. I met up with 2 study groups weekly to do the paper homework & online homework. She gives a quiz every class which is based on the homework that she doesn't go over. If you take this class: good luck.
Professor Jauchen is a great person, but not so great a professor. I don't have a clear understanding of her teaching style because she spends a 3 hour class going over one type of question. The homework she assigns on mathlab is quite different from what is stated in class, and it is iportant to complete the homework in order to pass the exam.
Lots of book work. The tests are ridiculous. She is just not a great professor.
AVOID if you haven't taken calculus before. If you have, take this class at your own risk. This is my third intro calc class so math the isn't very hard but she is a VERY tough grader and wants things done very specifically. The amount of work is what you'd expect from any math class but it is extremely time consuming.
Run! Run far away! There's a ton of homework and her grading criteria is unbelievably unclear. She wants specific answers, but will not give specific directions and then won't give specific feedback when you get something wrong. She is one of the worst math professors I have EVER had.
This it the worst professor I have taken at Mason so far. I took this class online because I had already taken some type of calculus in high school. She is a terrible grader for no apparent reason, grades things late ALWAYS and never has time to give you real feedback. Also makes you complete mymathlab and written hw each week. DO NOT TAKE!
She gives lots of homework. Homework take up to 8 hours. Accessible outside of class. Is willing to help if you ASK. Test 1 is hard, test 2 is harder, test 3 is the easiest & lenient towards the end of the semester. Final is a 10 page paper. You really have to work hard and not easy at all. Go to office hours and ask questions you'll get an A.
Joanna is a kind and patient professor. She's accessible though office hours, by email, and she's more than happy to schedule times that will work if her office hours aren't convenient. She makes you work, but everything you learn in her class is well worth the effort. I highly recommend her!
Joanna is a great person, but as a professor you definitely have to remind her about stuff! Her tests are easy if you do the homework (which there is a ton of ) and listen in class. Overall, its an easy A if you put some work in yourself, plus the textbook is only $7!
Joanna is a great professor, dont understand why people gave her low rate. Theres weekly homework/quiz but it really helps with the exams. Fair grader and respond to email fast. Took her online and had no problem with communication at all.
The reviews on this professor didn't match my experience at all, her tests are straightforward (just a review of what was covered up to that point) and her LA's are amazing. They really make the class more enjoyable. For me I spent an avg of 10+ hours a week on homework and going over topics for tests ( this is normal for college).
The professors teaching style is very scattered which makes the content hard to understand. The MyMathLab homework is extremely time consuming but its the only thing that helps me actually somewhat understand the content.
Wow this lady really doesn't make it easy. I took her class over the summer and my life was literally consumed by all the work she gives. VERY strict grader- she basically wants an entire essay on how you got a certain answer for written work, otherwise you get a 0. Taking her class was probably one of the worst experiences I have had at GMU. UGH
I took her for fall 2019 and she is the best math teacher I ever had. Her learning assistants were chill and helpful and the online homework has unlimited attempts. Ask questions if you have any and don't forget to turn in written assignments on time. I liked how she actually had us practice problems and gave feedback. Go to her review sessions!
Joanna was an amazing professor. The workload is heavy but it isn't as heavy compared to other math classes I've taken at Mason. She really does care and wants you to pass you just need to put the effort in to ask for help. Even if they're tedious, doing well on homework and quizzes will almost guarantee you an A on her tests. Highly recommend.
Joanna Jauchen is perhaps the most difficult professor I have ever had. The homework is extremely difficult and time consuming (approximately 50 questions per week and 2 hours of lecture) and tests are tremendously more difficult than what is covered in class. If you're not comfortable with calculus or your math, I do not recommend her class.
To be honest, I was not looking forward to this course. I had other peers tell me that she's rude and completely difficult. But, I am so happy I made the choice to take this course. Joanna is willing to work with you (WHEN YOU ASK FOR HELP) and she wants you to pass this class. It is a lot of work, but it is worth it! I love Joanna and this course!
One of those teachers who expect you to do Math their way or no credit. Workload is insane for a 100 level class and doesn't prepare you for exam material. Course is doable with enough effort but unless you're taking a math class above this level avoid at all costs.
If you think this is going to be an easy class for a math credit, you're wrong. She teaches you nothing and you are left in groups for majority of the class. She expects you to do homework that she doesn't even teach, and then popcorn grades the questions. She doesn't even give proper feedback and you will leave the class not knowing anything.
DO NOT TAKE HER!! She does not teach you ANYTHING and you are expected to teach yourself. Then she grades you super harshly (with a couple times her saying that she never put this in the lessons but is still going to grade us on it). She does not explain to you why you got a specific question wrong. There are 4 worksheets (8-10 pages long) per week
The work you do for this class is not worth it for a level 200 course. She answers emails in a way that comes off as rude but when you speak to her face to face she has a different tone of voice. Very unforgiving if you submit something by accident and very much unforgiving when you're going through something unexpected. If you have a choice don't.
This woman is the reason why I changed my major. Was absolutely miserable in her class. She was never helpful and doesnt really teach well. Her assistant was much better at explaining things.
They are there to guide you, not teach you. You're supposed to come to class prepared and be able to apply the material you learned on your own to the activities in class. If you need help, ask. They are super nice and wants you to succeed. The class has a lot of work, so don't slack off. They are more than willing to help one-on-one if you need it
This one I struggled with but that's due to my own lack of calculus experience. Jauchen was easy to understand and had lots of videos. DO NOT SLACK on the log functions/ln/e because once you get to derivatives, it's all cumulative and I went downhill from A to C after that point.
Yea this class might be difficult but you have to understand the concepts yourself. The professor helps out a lot. Just ask for her help and she will give it to u. I thought she couldnt do her job but she did it. You just need to put the work in to understand. Shes underrated.
She is such a great professor! The class is made up of weekly modules, each with 2 HW assignments and 1 quiz. You get unlimited attempts at each to get a 100 and can get feedback. Every 4th module there is a cumulative test, but she gives you practice tests to review the material and prepare for the tests. If you need to take math 108, pick her!
She is a terrible professor and doesn't know how to teach. Avoid if possible.
Gives too much homework.
Avoid! I am good at math and this class was too time-consuming and I ended up dropping it because I wasn't doing well! I took it async and she would give us like 5 20-minute videos to watch each class day and I ended up watching them at 2x speed because she goes too slow while teaching.
The class starts with ELM math but through the semester the math turns into high school math concepts. The project sucks its spoused to like a lesson plan/ building a project for ELM students, but with all the things she tells you to change it turns into a geometry project. She also never worked with ELM students too which is weird.
Informative lectures, and she heavily promotes working together. She held review sessions with the LAs for every test, and gave opportunities to raise your score. She was overall kind, accepted feedback, and sometimes brought snacks :)
Prof. Jauchen is a diamond in the rough. If you talk to her, she will be extremely reasonable and understanding. She knows everyones names and makes a point to talk to everyone individually. She understands we all have other classes and are stressed with work, so she offers flexible deadlines and does everything to make our lives easier.
If you struggle with calculus, this is the professor for you. Her lectures explain more than just HOW to solve problems, she also goes step-by-step and tells you WHY. She provides many opportunities to earn up to an extra 3 points added onto your final grade and is easily accessible at almost any time. She is compassionate and will work with you
This class will be tough if your algebra 2 skills are weak. Sometimes, the lecture videos go over problems that are easier than the homework and that can be frustrating sometimes. MathLab has an option that explains how to solve a problem, so use that when you're having trouble. The exams are very similar to exam reviews. Do practice problems!
get ready to learn a lot of content! time management is key. she is nice and will help if you ask. i sped up the lecture videos to 1.5 (they're on youtube). the exams are similar to the exam reviews but the questions are in a different order and the numbers are changed. she is probably the best option for this class. good luck!!!
A good amount of homework(online and written) so be prepared for that. Overall a good professor for a hard course. A tip is to use your office hours whenever you don't understand a concept the same week you learn it and not let confusion build up.
Very nice professor but the videos were not helpful at all because they only went over easy questions so when you get to the challenging questions you're on your own.
I dont like her teaching style at all. She would introduce us a new topic , and make us figure out how to solve the problems. Like just teach and do the talking first, then let us solve problems afterwards while we work on an assignment. Class is basically 12% of the time she lectures, 88% of the time is group work. She is strict at grading too.
She forces our class to get into groups each time we were given math problems, which was annoying and disruptive to learning in my opinion. This isn't high school. I paid to learn and get this class over with, please just make this class simple and have it be like every other classes. I do not want to be forced to talk to others who feel same way.
Even though this class is required for certain majors, avoid this professor at all costs. She is the most unrealistic professor I have had, making no accommodations, & simply does not care that people have lives & emergencies outside of school. If you get stuck with her anyways, set aside A LOT of time for this class & don't have any emergencies.
If I wanted to teach myself and just sit in a classroom doing more homework all day, I wouldn't have paid GMU $7k. Most unhelpful professor, waste of time, harsh grader, and unaccommodating. Does not provide extensions even in the case of situations beyond your control (ex. family emergency). Absolutely awful professor.
She is a nice person and helps people during class, but she gives alot of homework and her tests are graded very harshly. Each question on the exam will be 10-15 points and if you dont write it exactly how she wants you to, she'll take off half points.
These other ratings are a bit harsh, she wasn't THAT BAD, the first exam was really hard and I failed it but I redeemed myself by going to office hours every week to know exactly how she wants test answers and you do have to put time and effort into studying cuz exams are very tough, lectures did feel pointless but don't ever skip so your on track.
She gives a lot of mandatory group work and lots of homework. The homework problems are much harder than the examples done in class so make sure you leave a good amount of time outside of class to do them. There are also lots of office hours you can attend, so I suggest going to them. It takes multiple emails to get a response from her.
I really do not understand all the bad ratings. She was really accommodating, giving us plentiful extra credit opportunities even with an easy workload and clear explanations during her lectures. You just have to be ready to learn, use the office hours, enjoy the class. She is a great professor and you should give her a chance.
I think I worked a lot to get a B in this class. The exams are too many and too specific. Everything else in the course is do able but the exams are a bit tough at least for me. The professor is helpful and there is a lot of help available.
This Course is ALOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT of work. Time Consuming. Be ready to put 20+ hours per week. Lockdown exams and homeworks. Very hard quizzes!
Professor is unclear with what she expects problems to be written out as. By the end of the semester, a few topics were not covered once until review for exams began. Unhelpful emails asking for help on a specific problem when explicitly told she will help us via email. Kind and accommodating however.
one of the worst classes, with one of the worst teaching style, worst grading, hardddd exams, and hard exam reveiws. AVOIDDDDDDDD this class. You spent 20+ per week studying. You WILL Fail!
The final exam is not passable!
the tests are easy but she does not teach very well, and a very tough grader.
Recommended by a teacher friend, terrible call. Harsh grader, misleading as to what is on the exam, does not give answer keys for exam, 3 homework assignments per week, not including quizzes. Not helpful in emails asking about a problem, despite her encouragement to send her emails. Can't tell if it is incompetence or laziness.
There's no energy in the class, boring lectures, hard to understand, is available outside of class but it takes a lot of work, content is difficult and we're expected to do problems in groups without any pre-explanation on what the problem even is about. avoid if possible
Reading her reviews before the semester began, I was a bit nervous. However, she was genuinely very caring and responded to emails fast. She allowed one retake on one exam. Her homework assignments were a little difficult, but it was manageable. And her exam reviews were exactly like her exams. It general, the class wasn't too bad.
Prof Joanna is an incredible person however her lectures at times can get boring and unclear. Homeworks help a ton as her actual exams are somewhat based on them. Highly recommend going to office hours and learning from youtube if you are not clear on topics. A lot of group work and extra credit as well, overall good professor and is super helpful.
be highly aware that you get 5-ish weeks (summer) to complete a whole semesters worth content! It is difficult but not impossible. The course was well organized w/ the assignments, quizzes and due dates & she provides videos w/ thoroughly explained example problems. If it helps, I would've done better if I took the course during a regular semester
She's very kind, but a LOT of work. I took her during spring semester and there was one quiz due every week with at least 2 homework assignments. The exams are almost identical to the homeworks (numbers are different ofc), but she does allow one exam retake. The final is tricky though, so try to do well on the first two exams.
The Business Calculus class was 5 weeks long. She did not give partial points for certain questions you do. The final is a little hard and you should study and get A's on the homework assignments. Be prepared for a lot of work and it takes a lot of time. Good luck!
No partial points for typos, does not care. Basically you're taking this class on your own, make sure u get 100% on all ur HW's. Quiz's only have 3 attempts and theyre done weekly. The prof is just a spectator unless u have a math related question, there's no curving points. The only kindness you'll see in the course is being able to retake exam 1/2
She's nice but her personality isn't what's going to make you pass a class you're paying for. I took her because she was the only online option. One of my regrets for 2024 was taking this section. This class was so time consuming for absolutely no reason. Homework is about 70 questions collectively. GO IN PERSON TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!
The class average was a 72 and told us there would be no curve. Professor won't correct the online homework grade even if the error was the module's fault. If you have the time to actually study hard for the class take it. If not, don't even bother. I'm serious.
Awesome teacher! She is sweet and taught the content well in my opinion. There's some extra credit opportunities, and she is quick to reply to emails. There's a lot of homework but they help a ton on quizzes and exams. She has very reasonable and flexible policies. Overall very helpful and very sweet.
Professor Jauchen was Awesome. She's very caring and therefore provides students with a lot of materials to do well. The in-class practices really helped as well, we would work through problems in groups and she would go around helping us if we got stuck. Her way of teaching is really easy to follow with step by step instructions. Awesome Professor
She was nice and learned your name. We often worked in groups. Exams were fine. This class was pretty homework/quiz heavy. I'd recommend going to her office hours often & complete all of the optional classwork. It really helped to understand the content. If you complete homework early, she gives you bonus points.
its what you would expect for an online math class. Lots of weekly homework which you can get done in a few hours and then midterms and final exam in a proctored zoom (easy) gives extra credit and allows you to retake bad scores from midterms. Overall its overhated and doable and you should pass if you do the homework and get 70% minimum on exams
She makes you work in groups and do problems on the whiteboards in class - really helps solidify what you're learning when you're working on it with other people. very interactive class. she's super sweet - brought us breakfast foods at our final bc it was early. lots of homework but manageable.
I made the mistake of taking this class during the summer and I have never been so stressed in my life. There's a quiz and 2 assignments every 2 days and the homework is soooo much. Over 40 questions to solve for one assignment. Also for the exam the device you're using requires honorlock and a second camera is needed to watch your workspace
The ratings intimidated me before taking this class in the spring, but Professor Jauchen is actually an understanding and fair professor. You have 3 hws and a quiz with 3 attempts due each week. Exam review with 6 attempts which is very helpful. You get to make up one exam as well. Just follow her lectures and study and you'll be fine.
Haven't finished the course but I will get an F. I don't recommend taking this course over the summer, it is fast-paced and the HW assignment deadlines are unrealistic. 1 question will have 17 parts and take forever to complete. I'm bad at math but this was a different level of not understanding the material. She might be good for full semester.
I took the 5 week summer course, it was fast paced but manageable. The exams were basically the same as the reviews, so if you studied, you were good. She explained everything clearly and kept things organized.
Amazing professor. If you need to take the two-part calc 1 classes choose her. She's super chill and cares about every student. That also means participation is required. There's also a lot of group work and she'll check in on every group.
She's not the worst professor of all time, but she definitely has things she can improve. For instance, she has 2 midterm exams and 1 optional exam, which can lower your grade if you do poorly on it. On the bright side, she has us work in groups to practice the material, which really helped me understand it better.
Study guide + Practice exam are not similar to the exams and sometimes can lead you astray. The practice exams are from like 5 years ago and so she has structured her test a lot differently from then. Also her lectures are extremely boring, so be prepared to take time out of class to really learn the topic; Also doesn't hand your exams back.
Your exams are about 60%-80% of your grade and she grades extremely harsh so take that how you want to take that. If you think you will be good at test for this class take it else do not take this class for the love of god.
Avoid at all cost.
Joanna is a caring and lenient professor. She assigns a lot of homework every week, but if you do the homework you'll be prepared for the exams. If you're willing to come to class, she's more than happy to help you. Her exams are fair (graphing is a bit too weighted on exams, that's my only critique). If you like math, you'll like Joanna.
No idea what the final grade is but the math course's very difficult, especially with the extreme amount of homework and tests given. There are no curves happening if you end up getting a bad grade, little to no chance. You may want to reconsider another professor if Jauchen isn't it. She is nice overall and willing to help you out.
