Great teacher! Very clear lectures, fair tests - the class is well designed, organized and very fair. Be sure to do the readings assigned from the textbook, which are pretty easy to start neglecting.
Not a fair professor. She plays favorites. Wasn't that clear on projects & graded harshly on them. Keep up w/ the reading. Went to her for help as I was taking her class plus 3 tough classes w/ extracurriculars, and she just said to work harder. Not helpful & doesn't really care about students doing well in her class. Would NEVER take her again.
Lectures were boring and tests were purely memorization. It wasn't that difficult of a class but she's unhelpful, somewhat clear, and plays favorites, as someone said before. I wouldn't take her again. Take anyone else for 115.
Dr. Kepka heavily emphasizes participation in class. Your grade will suffer if you don't voice your opinions when discussing the readings assigned for homework. You spend most of the class copying down her PP because she doesn't make it available online, and she complains about the fact that students are always busy copying notes. Okay teacher.
Dr. Kepka's class is mainly memorization. If you can't memorize, don't take this class. Many struggled
Not a difficult class. Mostly memorization, but it really is not too much. Attend class, or she will dock your points. The only terrible thing is the group project. Make sure you know and trust someone in your class.
Do not take this class with Kepka - take Wintrol instead. Kepka is spiteful, passive-aggressive, and has inconsistent grading standards. Overemphasizes participation. Definitely plays favorites. Does not show that she cares for students. Only uses PowerPoint for lectures - so be prepared for long spells of boredom. Grades exams incredibly harshly.
Never had western history before and thought I would be bored to death. Instead, it's been the best class of my semester. She knows her stuff and she knows how to make it interesting. You do have to read a lot, and take notes. I like her style and I look forward to listen to her and see her every week -she's hot too!
Dr. Kepka was a great instructor! Her expectations are high, but she is reasonable when it comes to grading. She is always well prepared for lecture and tries to keep them as active as possible beyond simply taking notes off of a ppt. Don't listen to what has been said before, she is a great professor!
She is kind, helpful and intelligent. Her accent made it hard to understand her at the beginning but you get used to it. She relies on the text and on her ppts, but lectures most of her information so take good notes. Provides handouts for notes so you won't get lost. She goes over her tests beforehand and tells you what you need to study.
Very helpful, makes the info fun to learn, and very engaging. I loved her sense of humor, her accent, and her knowledge. Go to class and study regularly! She does pop quizzes and the tests require plenty of prep. But as long as you keep up, she does not grade as hard as she says she does. She seems tough at first, but she is fantastic!
Dr. Kepka's class is structured a little oddly. She's huge on participation - it's a whopping 15%. Also, losing a point on an assignment is losing a percent in class, as the entire class is out of 100 points. 1 point 1%. However, her exams are half fill-in, half essay, so read the assigned readings, and study for her quizzes!
She is an amazing professor however, reading the assigned readings, take extensive notes both in class and on the readings and you'll be fine. She does give pop quizzes and the tests require hard work, knowledge, understanding and lots of studying.
Her syllabus is crystal clear, so if you read it closely, you know what to expect. Besides, she gives detailed guidelines of her assignments a month before due date, so there's no surprises. She covers a lot of material in lectures, so take good notes. 110115 will be new starting this fall, so who knows, but she's an amazing teacher! The best!
She is a truly wonderful person, and cares deeply for her students. Yet, her grading system may screw you over. Attend class and participate, otherwise you won't get an A. The fill-in-the-blank section of her tests is rather tricky, be ready to memorize a lot of random words.
I had Dr. Kepka for 110 & 115. System is out of 100 points so every point off comes from 100%. Exams aren't brutal if you study & she gives group projects too! Amazing professor and always kept me interested in class, would take again! Always participate too!
Dr. Kepka is hands down one of the best professors in the Honors College. She makes history fun to learn and gives excellent lectures. Her tests are all written-response and she assigns a couple of essaysprojects. She is a fair grader and is always more than willing to give extra help.
Dr. Kepka was wonderful. She's super nice, but she also challenges you! i enjoyed her assignments and appreciated her willingness to help. Get ready to read though: There is at least two reading assignments per class (20+ pages) twice a week. She gives pop quizzes but if you read the material closely, you'll do fine. Participation matters as well.
Kepka is pretty cool. She is this nice Polish lady who led really engaging class discussions. We discussed things like war, morality, and leadership through the context of some easy, but really interesting readings. No exams, but there are three essays in the semester. If you put in effort, she is a fair grader. Only bad thing is tough pop quizzes.
She is the best! Super nice when you ask for help with your paper but do it before and not after. She won't discuss returned papers unless you can't read her comments and she gives LOTS of comments. She's engaging in class, super smart and always looks very good. there are 3 papers and lots of readings, but it's the same for all HON 115/110 now.
If you don't like participating in class, take this one! Your participation counts for nothing and is all based on ridiculous one or two question pop quizzes.
I had Kepka for HON 110 and 115. Her pop quizzes add up towards the end of the semester, so take them seriously! Her exams usually consist of fill in the black, m/c, and short answers or essays. She cares about her students, but you have to show some initiative. She knows when you don't care about her class, and that is reflected in your grade.
Dr. Kepka is okay, but I have a lot of issues with her. She's very critical of America and will talk down about it a lot. She also interrupts her students frequently during discussion to make her own points. Additionally, the pop quizzes focus on minute details, and it often doesn't make a difference if you read. That said, she's a fair grader.
Prof. Kepka is awesome!! My favorite honors teacher so far. She gives great feedback on papers, let's you turn them in early if you want a re-write and she practically tells you what and how to change to improve your grade. She leads the best discussions when she forces us to think from someone else's place. Every class is exciting as she is!
Dr. Kepka is a good person and knowledgable. Be prepared to read almost every night and take notes; she gives pop quizzes based on small details. There are 3 papers. She is not very clear on the guidelines sometimes so make sure to ask. The third paper consists of a group project and presentation. Also, everyone must present 5 min on a reading.
Total of 2 presentations: a 5 min one where you choose a reading and present it, another is a 15 min group on a country and a reading. 3 papers last one is a group paper, grades attendance, 20 point extra credit available, pop quizzes, do well on papers because you can't fix it, discussion based class.
Dr. Kepka is by far one of the best professors I've ever had. She's very opinionated, which often makes for very interesting discussions. That being said, she's not always clear on what she wants in essays. But she's really approachable, so if you have any concerns she's happy to clarify. Expect pop quizzes that aren't worth a lot of points.
I had Dr. Kepka for HON 110, 115, and 400. She engages with students, and she expects a lot, but this is college--there's a higher standard. If you take her and actually try, then you'll learn so much. I guarantee it.
Professor Kepka is knowledgeable, but extremely judgmental. She can be very condescending at times. I took her for 400-level class, and there TONS of papers. 5 three page papers, two 4 page papers, and a final 10 page paper. It was ridiculous. Furthermore, she was not clear AT ALL about guidelines for the assignments.
Surprised to see so many people complaining. Took her for Hon 110 and I got a C on my first paper. Took her again and got an A on my other papers. Make use of the early bird essays. It is a chance to get feedback and get one letter grade higher. If you're having problems writing your essay GO TO OFFICE HOURS! She is helpful and will even read it.
Kepka is a demanding prof., but you actually learn and get better at things. Took Costello last semester and didn't learn how to put a thesis together and support it. She can be intimidating in class because she'll flat out tell you're wrong if you can't back up your opinions, but she's really helpful in office hours with paper ideas & structure.
3 papers, one of them group project, presentation, and lots of readings discussions. Make sure you read before coming to class, to participate but also she does pop quizzes on readings. She's knows her stuff and she'll make you work for your grade, but you learn a lot. Definitely make use of her office hours. She's a nice lady one on one.
Kepka definitely has class - she can give you a C on a paper and still make you feel good about it. She definitely makes you work, but you'll never learn more about the world then in her 115.! It's 3 papers in a semester and lots of readings, but she makes it fun overall. Participation matters so read and talk, she knows if you haven't.
She's a decent person. I didn't click with her teaching method, and she's a strict grader. If you don't give her exactly what she wants to read you won't get a good score. Tons of reading, and tiny quizzes that are worth almost nothing, but you have to read to get the points. The group projects were awful. She's stylish as hell though.
i love dr kepka. extremely kind woman. however, she makes you work for your grade. there are no handouts. you have to prove yourself. lots of reading, 10 quizzes, 1 paper, and 2 group projects. the work was intensive but not overwhelming. she is very geography oriented so you learn a lot. the class was interesting. i would take her again for sure!
Her class is interesting to say the least. We talked about readings, and the conversation was never really insightful. She seemed to steer the conversation always to her narrative, basically saying everyone else was wrong. Going in for advice would not help. Essay prompts sucked because they were not specific or just irrelevant to the topic.
She gives quizzes on almost every reading but they're incredibly specific. Even the 'reader leader' student for that passage gets it wrong most of the time, and there are two long readings each class. Kepka cares a lot about Geography, but she is very open about new cultures and informed on global news. She isn't very approachable though.
I heard this class was a lot of work with Kepka but I didn't expect it be so much fun also. There're 2 essays and a group project and they're all about different countries/leaders. Tons of readings and the class is mostly discussion but she lectures some on big issues. Better read because there's surprise quizzes and participation will suffer.
The class is split into 3 sections with a project/essay on each. Other than that do the readings and you'll be fine. Show up to class since there are pop quizzes. As for Kepka she is a nice prof but her teaching is lackluster. She interrupts students A LOT which bothered me. Other than that she was pretty average. Wouldn't take her again.
Prof Kepka is strict but she helps you throughout the semester if you go to her office hours for help. The class has a lot of readings and they cover different topics, you write a paper at the end of each unit. She also gives good feedback on papers.
She does not practice what she preaches. She is not clear with her guidelines and changes guidelines of presentations on the day off. There are better professor than her so good luck if you do take class with her.
Professor Kepka expects you to read a lot of articles and discuss them in class. Get ready to talk about the readings or else you will suffer. Sometimes she can be confusing on the guidelines but going to her office hours will definitely benefit you. Good luck!
The best seminar I've taken! You study migration patterns around the world and there are three projects for grade in the semester. They all deal with the migration experience but in different ways. Kepka's expectations are high but she's very clear in her guidelines. If you put in the work and read, you'll do fine and get a lot out of the class.
I learned a lot in this class about the world and current events. To do well, you must read and talk, she's big on participation in class. There's 3 units and a paper at the end of each. You practice presenting in front of class too, several times in the semester. Study the map to impress her. She's a nice person but can be intimidating.
Prof Kepka may appear caring and nice but she is definitely neither of them. She is very opinionated and if you disagree just keep it to yourself. Lots of reading and she asks for your opinion but will interrupt you with her own if she disagrees. Not clear on her guidelines and strict grading papers. Good Luck.
I'm in her class now and she is not only extremely knowledgeable about what she teaches, she's also super organized. all guidelines are posted on Canvas way ahead, you can get access when a new unit begins to everything covered in class. Not sure about the disagreement part - she often asks us to play devil's advocate to argue another view.
Kepka is a very organized teacher. She posts all the guidelines on Canvas at the beginning of each unit so you'll have plenty of time to do the assignments. go to her office hours for ideas and help especially if you are stuck. I went and she helped me find focus/argument and even scholarly sources for my paper. She helps you succeed if you work.
I really enjoyed her class! She is very knowledgeable about current events and world conflicts, so I liked participating in the discussions. The readings are, for the most part, not really bad at all. Usually just a few pages long. She's also pretty funny in a subtle way lol
She's a really nice person and funny but thinks you aren't listening if you don't talk as much as she does in discussions. Every unit is a group project and you'll end up keeping your group for the whole semester if you don't ask to change after the second unit. Papers weren't too bad and you can get an A, but participation will drag you down
Kepka has a great sense of humor. She makes learning fun and interactive. In her class, discussion of topics like education, how different cultures see relationships and love and identity were stimulating and interesting. Three graded assignments at the end of each unit, you present as a group but she grades individual. Great professor!
Kepka is a nice professor. She cares for her students and makes the class engaging and fun. she's really passionate about geography and world so you learn a lot about different regions and countries. There's 3 units and a paper at the end of each unit. Make sure you talk a lot in class with the discussions
When she says she makes times for the students, she means it. I can't make it to her office ours this semester and she's met with me 3 x at different times to answer all my questions . She also answers emails quickly which helps a ton. She cares about the students and how you improve thru the semester, so if you do work and improve you'll do fine.
After having an A in the class all semester, she input participation and this brought my grade down to 89%. I emailed to see if there was anything I could do; I only missed class twice, and participated in class discussion. She looked into it and then lowered my grade even further because she did not account for one absence. Extremely disappointed.
Doesn't care about students' success. She's thorough in her teaching but when it comes to caring about students and giving credit where credit is due she falls flat.
Dr. Kepka is an amazing professor and is among one of the best professors in the honors college. Her discussions are amazing and very insightful and she tries to engage everyone into the discussion as much as possible. She is a very fair grader and always gives good feedback on what you can improve. I would definitely recommend her to anyone.
Dr. Kepka is amazing. She knows sooo much about every country in the world and she knows how to make us want to know it to. I learned so much about the country I studied all semester, the leaders, history, wars, etc and it made me really understand the map and want to discover the stories it tells. Great class! I hope they don't change it much.
The highest grade for an essay is a 95% in this class which makes it very hard to get an A in this class. She inputted my participation grade the week before finals and it dropped my grade 5% even though I participated and missed one class for a valid reason she would not excuse. Penalties for any absence, boring class, unfair grader, don't take.
I had Kepka for 115 which was great so I really wanted to be in her 110. The structure of the class is the same, 3 themes and papers at the end of each, and she also assigns presentations as group projects. She's great at leading discussions but you need to talk also. No extra credit with her, so make sure you visit her office hours before hand.
3 essays, 2? group projects. Very important to raise your hand every class since discussion is 10% of your grade. Homework is readings before every class and a weekly 300 word journal. Good professor though and makes it very clear what she expects for each assignment
Kepka is very organized. She's the only one of my profs who has the whole online instruction figured. I can see week by week assignments, all is well structured and clear, no doubts. She gives great lectures on power point, which I normally find super boring, but hers are really well done. She knows so much about the world, really worth taking her!
Dr. Joanna is a really good professor in my opinion. In the course you do weekly journals based on a country and tying it in to what you have been learning in the class. Depending on what semester, you will either have 2-3 essays and will give a presentation twice. Overall it is a super easy course, just attend class and stay on top of the work.
Dr. Kepka is the best professor at UNLV. She cares about her students and wants you to succeed. The work in the class may seem like a lot, but it is fun and interactive. I have taken Dr. Kepka for 2 semesters now, and I would take her every semester if I could. She is a blessing to UNLV and I'm very fortunate to have had her class. I will miss her!
Dr. Kepka's seminar was the best! I learned so much about migration and how national identities formed over time. The readings were interesting and the mapping of Story Maps using GIS software so fun! We got to interview immigrants and map their migration stories. The class flows well, even with the disruptions by COVID 19. Kepka is awesome!!
Out of all the Honors Professors on campus, I would say Professor Kepka is the best as she not only provides a structured class, but also provides amazing feedback. She actually cares about you. Only thing, just raise your hand and participate! It might seem daunting, but her class environment is very welcoming. Thank you Dr. Kepka!
Kepka makes you work for your grade, but the projects are really engaging and really make you wanna learn about the world and all it's diverse countries and people. Not sure how the online class will be, but we had half online last spring and it was great. Very organized, with everything clearly laid out. She knows her stuff and how to teach it.
She is the worst professor I have ever had at UNLV. That's really saying something. She graded EXTREMELY hard. Have one thing wrong? 75. Have your power go out because of a hurricane, and something is turned in 5 minutes late, despite you sending an email earlier describing the situation? 65. She does not care about you; she cares about failing you
The class is very well designed and clear from the get go. All assignments are posted and discussions include interesting links to videos, TedTalks, web articles, and news about global issues. Lots of chances to express your opinions. It's not an English class, so that was a nice break though you have to write daily for each topic and respond.
For a summer course, dr. Kepka's class was perfect, not too much overload, manageable assignments. she knows how to design an online class that's engaging and interesting. I've never learned so much about the world in one class. Definitely recommend her! She's fair, kind, and always responds to emails.
So far my best class in Honors! Kepka is an amazing professor, she responds to all emails and answers all questions. The class was a bit heavy but it was a full semester in 5 weeks. All is explained and outlined, crystal clear. There are two bigger projects and daily discussion activities. Definitely take Global Issues with her. Very worldly prof!
The class was well structured and easy to follow. Discussions were my favorite and I learned so much from them. She likes to provide a lot of instructions and if just one thing is off, you'll be docked so make sure you read everything multiple times. The class was simple but became stressful due to grading. Easy to email but not very understanding.
just weekly assignment and comments. w final project. pretty easy very interesting learning about global countries and issues.
This class's been quite awesome, it opened my eyes to so many global issues that I haven't thought of before. You really learn a lot and you get to learn about many countries too from your classmates. It's cool how she structured our online discussions to cover so much. Very approachable prof, she responds to emails fast and is very helpful.
The online class is really well designed, everything is layed out from the beginning, it's all clear and very organized. The material is interesting also, and she had us all engaged in doing research on our own countries that we represented. I felt connected and engaged despite this being an online course this semester. Great prof!
Dr. Kepka is one of the most intelligent people on campus, and her knowledge on culture, immigration, and geography open students' eyes to events outside of their direct society. She is a straightforward grader and gives students the opportunity to rewrite papers if need be. She also gives good feedback so you know what you need improvement on.
Prof Kepka is definitely the best professor I've had at UNLV Honors. Her seminar opened my eyes to European conflicts past and present, and many other aspects I didn't know about Europe. I highly recommend any class with her, especially her seminars! She's clear on grading and yes, gives good feedback and lets you improve on things.
Summer class 2021. Two discussion posts (total 600ish words) per week. Two bigger projects. Grades really easily as long as you follow the instructions. This class is an eye-opener about many world issues. I would defiantly take it again!!
Usually I have no problem in my HON classes and have so much fun. Never have I seen someone more uncaring and unwilling to understand their students. Like many have said, if you do ONE thing wrong you get a whole letter grade deduction and she is VERY unclear on directions. The biggest issue I see in this global issues class is her.
Not a great professor. Unfairly critiques students; some students very apparently do not try in her class (as it's only global issues, not a real course) but she only knit-picks certain students. She'll find a way to criticize one student, but let all the other students slide with the same thing. Overall, disappointed in her class and her as well.
Super boring class, to be honest, I don't even use the textbook. She is very rude if you don't hear/understand it the first time. It's an easy class don't get me wrong but it's really just a pain more than anything. She is very specific for no reason, got mad because we were using canvas email and not her Gmail. Basically makes us teach each other.
The class is remote with virtual meetings, which can be difficult but she's really great at leading discussions and letting us express our views. She's a tough grader but her guidelines are super clear so it's not hard to get As if you follow them. her assignments are time consuming but you learn a lot about different countries so that's cool.
Solid class and Kepka is a great professor. She's very organized and clear with expectations and responds to emails right away if you have questions. She's personable also in office hours etc, if you have questions. I learned a lot about different global issues I never considered, great topics and prof! I recommend.
She is a good lecturer with reasonable assignments and grading. For this class, she is more than adequate and anyone will have a reasonble time learning and discussing during class sessions. The one important thing to pay attention to is that her guidelines for assignments are very strict and a slight deviation from them results in lost points.
Kepka is a great prof. She runs the class smoothly, everything is clear from the get go, and the great thing about this class is that you get to select a country and research it for a semester. I learned tons about global issues and how different countries approach them. Very interesting class/prof and great discussions.
she is very sweet and caring, organized and everything. all you have to do is show up to class and write discussion posts. easy A
The class is not difficult, but you do a lot of work on your own (reading, responding to questions on line about readings and your specific countries). I've learned a lot about global issues I only knew from headlines, so I gained a deeper understanding. Kepka is a caring professor who goes the extra mile to help if you show interests. Great class!
If you need to take 115, take it with prof Kepka. Her geographical perspective is perfect for this class, we studied global issues from different countries' perspectives and did great projects. Not too much work, it's an intro class, and she keeps good pace for the semester. Nice prof and she gives good and encouraging feedback.
Global Issues is a class every student should take in college. I learned a great deal about issues I only knew as headlines. Kepka is a solid prof, her class is super well organized and you know what to expect and do from the get go. Interesting content and she's great a leading discussions, even virtual ones online, so that was an extra bonus!
Kepka is very knowledgeable about geography and world affairs. She asks great questions and is good at leading discussions, so you'll learn a lot by attending the sessions (even on zoom). The projects aren't that difficult, usual workload, and interesting because we learned about global issues and many countries positions. Great class and professor
Dr. Kepka was a lot of fun to take for HON 115. I feel like I learned a lot this semester and really opened my eyes to a lot of the issues happening worldwide. She is very inspirational and caring professor. This class only meets once a week and has an online discussion every week and 2 projects. As long as you do the work well, you'll do great.
This was an online hybrid class and it was engaging and fun. The prof is a nice and caring professor. We did projects on different countries and met virtually to discuss a lot of global issues. I learned many interesting things about world affairs. I highly recommend global issues with prof. kepka.
The class was web live and our virtual discussions were very engaging. The material is straightforward, engaging and interesting and you get to represent a country for the semester. It's interactive and you really get to learn a lot, great professor. I recommend to everyone interested in global issues. She's the best!
DO EVERYTHING THAT IS INSTRUCTED!!! As long as you answer all of the discussion questions and follow the rubrics, this class is super easy! She's a great teacher and overall a good pick for this class! She responds in a timely manner. The discussions were interesting and learned a lot about countries and current issues. Highly recommend!
I've never had a professor who made me rewrite a proposal in multiple drafts. I mean she allows 3 resubmissions for grade change but then she told us to rewrite for clarity even more and I learned a lot through this. She's very helpful in giving feedback to help you write better. The class itself is interesting, but I don't like the textbook much.
Kepka's class is very well done. She records lectures to give you context and she gives good feedback. Most of all the class really opens your mind to many new perspectives. We studied many global issues and the professor is very well rounded and informed. Follow assignment guidelines if you want to get full points.
One of my least favorite professors. Would never take her again due to the fact that she was completely uncaring about students' wellness. She doesn't care if you have unexpected medical issues or hardships during school, she will just punish your grade for it. Other than that, the class was pretty straightforward with lots of writing.
I learned a great deal about global issues in this class that I was unaware of. It's a very well designed class and content is interesting and important. Kepka sets great expectations but guidelines and instructions are very clear from the get go. Easy to follow and not hard if you can put in the time and effort.
Dr. Kepka is fantastic! The HON430 Rise of Right Wing Populism course is straight-forward and designed to get you thinking critically about global politics. During the summer session it is 2 discussion posts each week and 2 projects throughout the 6 week course. These are not hard at all if you are familiar with 400 level college coursework.
Professor Kepka is a good teacher! She is very specific in her requirements but if you follow all of them you will be fine. She is available for questions and grades in a timely manner. Just follow the rubrics and check your citations are correct!
I've had Dr. Kepka for many honors classes, and she lectures well and provides interesting material. However, even after having her as a professor for so long, I feel that I never know what she wants on assignments. She rarely provides a rubric or examples, and whenever you ask for clarification she redirects you back to the confusing instructions.
Prof. Kepka's HON115 class covers important global issues in an engaging way. The course has a fair workload - just follow the instructions and you'll do well. Unstuck study was a great study tool alongside the course materials. Recommended for anyone interested in expanding their worldview.
The Latin American Cultures & Politics seminar is a very cool course. Prof. Kepka had us listen to different songs every week and shared paintings of famous Latin American artists. The class covered lots history from colonial era to present but she organized it well so it wasn't boring or long. The films we watched helped visualize what went on.
Make sure to read the instructions carefully!! I've missed several points on assignments because I forgot to reread the instructions. Instead of a final exam, there's a project at the end of the semester that you do with a partner. It's pretty easy, but I don't understand why she would assign a group project in an online class.
Phenomenal teacher all around and yet another example of the UNLV Honors college having some very passionate teachers. in HON 115 there are weekly canvas writing assignments that towards the end of the semester seem to drag on but they are still very insightful. This class only might get tedious towards the end of the semester.
