Excelent class, the lectures were very interesting and informative. I thouroughly enjoyed this class beyond my expectations. Bailey is funny and intelligent and she is one of those rare professors that doesnt take herself way too seriously.
really fun class!! i agree with the person below on everything. lectures are about everyday stuff any girl would want to know (and curious guys). a lot of coursepack reading but only 2 exams. a 10 pg paper in the middle is all the only bad thing but u get it over with. great class, funny enjoyable professor!
she drinks starbucks and lectures on how you should use your economic power to support good buisnesses...she sucks
Great professor. Never understood why people liked Lisa Kane-Low more than Joanne. Class was super easy, really interesting, and fun. Every chick on campus should take this class. Joanne's lectures were good, but the guest lecturers could be a little boring. Exams, papers, and material all easy. Seriously, good class.
Women Studies 220 with Bailey: Very easy...just show up to lecture, memorize the coursepack as the coursepack=what's on the test There's a 3 page analysis, 1 page abstract and a 10 page final paper (but not really too hard...just state the facts and use the strategies) however, be feminist and you will get a great grade
Such a character! She made lectures interesting and fun but the problem was there were so many guest speakers that were so boring. The material is not hard and she makes it quite clear what she wants from the course!
She is funny and makes all topics interesting. For girls the class is great as it tackles everyday issues. However, guys should know that it gets pretty graphic at times and could cause great discomfort. As long as you go to lectures and read the coursepack, you should do well. Also, although the term paper is long, the grading is very easy.
I love this class! I call it my "life class" and I looked forward to it every week. It's fun yet real and relevant. Joanne is extremely open to her students, and all the GSIs for this class were insightful and accomplished. I made a lot of life decisions with help from this class. Take it, you'll be glad you did!
I loved this course. Going into it, I was a bit skeptical, but the material is interesting, and I think Joanne presents it very well. The mid-term and finals were easy as long as you read the coursepack, and the paper is graded pretty easily. I would take it if you can fit it in your schedule.
Take this class with her! The lecture was so informative and entertaining. I loved it.
The class is super interesting and Joanne is a fantastic lecturer. She is a little bit scattered when you visit her in office hours, but otherwise the class is awesome. A lot of interesting material and it helps when you have a good GSI. The exams are fair and there are only a couple papers. Definitely worth it if you are interested in the material
Women's Health with Joanne Bailey is amazing! She is also great in office hours!
Awesome class!!!!!!!!! Easy exams as long as you read the course pack. This class is so much fun that you will be excited to go every week. I will miss it. :(
Was a fairly interesting class, but 2 hour lectures were really hard to sit through. Prof. Bailey was clear and very helpful, seemed like a nice person. Exams were extremely easy (you get study guides). Just make sure to do the coursepack readings. Struggled with writing the 8-10 page paper. Might not enjoy this if you're not a radical feminist.
Bailey is a great lecturer, she's super animated during class, but the 2 hours can get tedious at times (especially when you have class late) the way she taught the was engaging and interesting, but you have to read the coursepack. other than that, the tests are easy, but the 10 page paper takes some time.
I absolutely loved her! She made class very interesting. However, make sure you pick a good GSI. Mine was not very helpful when I had questions and penalizes you for not being a feminist, even though she said it was okay if you're not one. Overall, Joanne made class enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this class. Very powerful and fun.
There are A LOT of readings. I suggest you take this course with other light course. Your final paper is worth a 25% of your grade, so focus a lot of time on that. The grading is very uneven between GSIs though.
Joanne was really cool. WS220 was the easiest class and she made it really fun. I suggest taking it if you need RE or SS credits
Joanne is really enthusiastic about what she teaches. She's very laid-back and often brings the audience in. Some of the topics covered are interesting. The exams are multiple choice tests but they're very specific and its easy to lose points.
Really interesting class, I thought the exams were a bit too detailed but I still got an A- in the class. Make sure you go to your GSI for help on the 10 page paper. Otherwise, it was a great class
This class is super easy and extremely interesting. The only difficult part is the 8-10 page paper, but it really isn't that hard it just takes some time. Make sure you do the course pack readings (there are a lot of them, but they are usually pretty interesting) and go to class and you will do fine. Exams are pretty easy if you do the readings.
Joanne is fantastic! Funny and very open to questions people have in lecture, she makes the large lecture like family. :) Definitely recommend her for this awesome class!
Really interesting class! I would recommend anyone it, regardless of your interests. It's a great one, and it's not difficult, so you can really focus on content rather than on your grade.
Joanne is a great professor and I recommend this class to anyone! The material is interesting, enlightening, and important!
This is both an easy and very interesting course. Joanne only teaches one semester a year, so she is always eager, upbeat, and enthusiastic about class. She always loves chatting about life, and is incredibly helpful if you attend office hours. I recommend this class to anyone. We had such diversity in my course!
Literally loved this class and loved Bailey!
Bailey is very approachable, even in a lecture hall of 300-400. Covers a lot of material, but keeps it fun. Basically just sit back and listen. Brings in good guest lecturers occasionally. Truly passionate about her job. Exams are EASY. Discussion is good too, if you have a good GSI. Textbook- not necessary but great to have, I'm keeping mine
Very easy and basic women's studies course. Barely used the textbook but it's a helpful resource to have for life.
The lectures are good, but long. My main criticisms are that the material should be very easy to anybody with a basic understanding of feminist theory, so it's sometimes hard to stay engaged. I'm not a fan of the class layout, though. Also, avoid taking this class if you want a professor who is trans-inclusive.
Honestly she's a great professor. The lectures are laid back and informative. Print out the notes she gives online, pay attention and buy the coursepack and you'll do fine! The GSIs vary with grading on the papers; my GSI was picky in terms of topics for the paper and graded harshly if she didn't like the topic.
Prof. Bailey's class was pretty straight forward. Her exams covered what was in her lectures. The assignments were clear. If you paid attention, it was an easy class. It was mostly memorizing, not too difficult. She's very passionate about what she teaches.
Joanne is AMAZING! She is hilarious and will really get you thinking. The material is really interesting including the readings and videos she shows in class. I loved this class and it was an easy A. I would recommend if you need an easy class but also if you just want to take a genuinely interesting class.
Joanne is a wonderful teacher and human being who is knowledgable and passionate about what she teaches. Take class with her, she makes it worth your while!
One of the best classes Michigan offers. The material is really interesting and Bailey is a wonderful lecturer with great readings, guest speakers and presentations. My GSI was a tough grader, and I've heard the same for the others, but had great discussions and super helpful in office hours. Recommend this class for anyone!
Your grade in the class depends a lot on your GSI. That being said, Joanne ran the class really well, and I enjoyed attending her lectures. The material is always relevant, and I'm glad I took the class.
Professor Bailey is amazing and you can really tell she loves what she's teaching! That being said, your grade completely depends on your GSI. I got a really tough GSI, and there are very few assignments so you can't really redeem your grade easily. VERY small workload :)
She is a very knowledgable and genuine professor. That being said, the material is extremely boring to sit through for 2 hours so if you forget to listen during lecture the tests become harder. All memorization for tests, and grade depends on GSI. Easy class but my GSI graded papers really tough which hurt my grade.
i went to the first lecture and got an A by just skipping lectures, reading my course guide, looking over posted lecture notes, and doing well in discussion. if you know a bit about feminism you're fine to not go to lecture.
Very easy class even if you miss lecture. Just make sure you look over lecture notes. Easy A if you have a good GSI. All paper grading is done by GSIs and papers are the majority of the grade. Midterm and final are easy if you read the course guide and look at lecture notes that always get posted.
WS 220 is an amazing class that changed my outlook on the world. The class' easiness depends on your GSI--I earned an A without discussion but I had a tough GSI so I got an A- in the class. The content is great, but there is too much hand-holding/discussion assignments for the research paper. There is extra credit if you go to events on campus
Joanne is amazing!! Favorite class so far! Easiness depends on GSI. I had the hardest grading GSI so I finished with a B+, but I love the discussion she lead. Going to class was never something I dreaded (lecture and discussion). Take Joanne's class, you will not regret it!
Good lectures, funny, knowledgable, great GSI's and discussions
Bailey was a great professor, however, the GSIs were tough graders, sometimes unreasonably. Extra credit is offered, but not if you participate and attend class. This was not communicated to me so I wasted my time on extra credit. Sometimes the readings were boring and trivial, but Bailey's lectures were great. Recommend for someone interested.
Joanne is not only a very informative lecturer, but also makes her 2-hour lecture very interesting. I never fell asleep once in that class. Grading criteria is very clear and all the GSI's are very supportive and caring. Highly recommend this class to any pre-health students out there.
You will not regret taking this class. I learned so much from Joanne, and found her lectures super interesting. Your grade depends largely on your GSI.
She's by far the best lecturer I've had at this school. The class is until 7:30 pm and I'm wide awake through the whole thing. If you do the readings (minimal) go to class and listen then you'll do well. Unless you're terrible at writing papers, especially since the GSIs grade those and if you get a tough grader you're going to have a tough time.
You would learn a lot from this class if you do not already know the basics of women's studies and feminism, but if you do, then the class is pretty boring. Joanne is not a very captivating lecturer, so even though the information is interesting, it is hard to pay attention. Good class if you know nothing about feminism, otherwise kind of boring.
Professor Bailey making class interesting by bringing in guest speakers and sharing stories from her professional work that keep class interesting. Material is something I was already interested in but this class took it to the next level. Would recommend this class to anyone with any major no matter of sex.
Great lecturer and super interesting, but you can't use any electronics in class. She posts the lecture slides before so you can take notes alongside them which is helpful. Not super hard but also not super easy. Really interesting material and will change your perspective on a lot of things
Started this class saying that it is an unbelievable course and that everyone should be taking it. Once grades happened, I changed my mind. The GSIs determine your grade, so you just have to get lucky with who you get. The tests are straight forward, but the essay grading is so beyond unfair that I would never recommend this class to another person
Was very excited to take this course, but was quickly realizing it wasn't just a women's health class. It's basically just a feminism class. The lectures are pretty boring unless there is a guest lecturer, readings are extensive, and the class is just talked up wayyyy too much so I think I was disappointed because I was expecting a lot.
I really enjoyed this course! It's definitely not as easy as everyone says it is--there's quite a bit of writing. However, I think Joanne was a great lecturer. I would definitely recommend taking this course, the topics are interesting and eye-opening. Also, would definitely recommend having Sara as your GSI--she's amazing!!
Joanne was a great lecturer. The GSI's determine your grade, and the class has a decent amount of writing for only being 3 credits. But, one of my favorite classes! Combined my interests of feminism, health, and more specifically reproductive health.
Joanne is an amazing lecturer. Take any of her classes, you won't regret it. As a person, she is super caring, treats each student individually and creates a comfortable space. Loved her Women's Studies 220 class.
The professor is good but DO NOT take this class as the GSI control your entire grade and grade as if youre getting a phd in writing. Horrible. So hard to succeed
HER LECTURES ARE AMAZING, but the amount of extra effort you have to put in to get a good grade ruins everything. GSI's are harsh graders & don't know how to help you improve. The written final has a holistic grading rubric which allows your GSI to base their grade off the "vibe" they get from your paper. Orgo was a piece of cake compared to this.
Everyone should take this class. I took it as a freshman, and it was fun and a lot of information that everyone, but esp women, should have. There are a lot of readings, but they're easy and super interesting. Joanne is great and I would recommend this class to anyone who has even the slightest interest.
This is essentially a basic feminism class, so as someone already somewhat well-versed in introductory feminist philosophy, the topics often seemed rather self-explanatory. The focus on health from a feminist perspective is interesting but not well-integrated with the material. You essentially write one paper the entire class which I found tedious.
Joanne was amazing! I loved her lectures! There's a lot of writing involved but by going to my GSI's office hours before the deadlines, it was no problem. There's a lot of reading too but I found the articles interesting. Tests are 50 MC and by memorizing lecture content and thoroughly going through the readings, I found them to be pretty easy!
The topics covered were very interesting, but I feel the team could have been more clear about what they expected in the assignments.
The class is divided into an asynch lecture section and discussion in person. The material was extremely interesting, but there is a good amount of reading which is heavily tested on the 4 quizzes during the semester. There is no final and instead a project. I learned a lot from this course and would recommend.
This was a super fascinating class and Joanne has so much passion for the subject! Her lectures were asynch while the discussion were all in person. I really wish the lectures were in person as well cause I can imagine they would be even more captivating. The quizzes could be hard, so do the readings and watch the lectures!
This class is super boring. She gives tons of readings and quizzes on little details so get ready to read. Also, your grade depends heavily on the GSI.
She explained the material well and I found her lectures pretty interesting. The quizzes are not difficult if you do the reading. They're open-note, but I hardly even needed to check my notes. It's just that there is a LOT of reading each week. The only thing I didn't like was that she never remembered to warn us before showing graphic images.
This class is GSI based. Make sure you watch all the lectures and do all the readings before the quiz because without doing both of these you won't be able to get a good grade on the quizzes!
I loved bailey. Her course was so interesting & it was easy to succeed without being so easy I didn't have to try. I genuinely looked forward to doing work for her class and learned so much. I ended up with a B+ b/c I took it fall20, so we went home right before finals season which was rough, but not at all her fault. she rocked. 220= must take!
While this class did have a LOT of readings (which were important because of the quizzes), Joanne's lectures were so interesting to listen to. They were long and information-heavy at times, but super educational. Lectures were in asynchronous format, so you mainly interact with your GSI. However, the GSIs are all awesome, and lead great discussions
One of the most passionate profs ever! She clearly cares about the content and her students so much. Moderate workload and discussion participation is key. Easy to do well if you care about the topics and communicate with your GSI (all super open and flexible!) Would love to learn from Joanne again soon!
I love this woman. Her lectures are so interesting and the course content is pretty easy to understand. The entire class was wonderful and would highly recommend.
This was my favorite class this semester. Only went to lecture twice, I mostly watched the lectures on 2x speed the next morning. Very light workload just make sure you do the few assignments well and do the readings. Joanne is really passionate about what she teaches and her lectures are SUPER interesting. Actually looked forward to watching them.
This class is amazing! Joanne is an amazing lecturer and the content is super interesting. This class is not a ton of work and it is easy to get a good grade.
i loved joanne!! wgs 220 was one of my fav classes and joanne was a huge part in that. amazing lectures and would definitely take a class with her again!
do not take this class it is NOT an easy A everyone i know is struggling.
I loved Dr. Bailey. She is so kind, so funny, and incredible at what she does. Lectures aren't required, but I kept coming back for the friends I made and her personality. Take this class with her! :)
Sweetest lecturer and very knowledgeable. This isn't the easiest of As, you have to put some work in, but it's definitely manageable. There aren't many assignments, just some quizzes and a few worksheets leading up to an infographic. Overall super interesting content and if you're going into healthcare this class can provide some great connections.
Joanne is the sweetest professor ever. She is very inclusive, makes heavy topics feel a little lighter, she is just great. She has a lot of great insight on the topics discussed, and she always provides lots of resources for the class and even things outside of class. 10/10 recommend
I loved this class and was genuinely excited to learn new things every week. Prof Bailey is extremely caring and knowledgable and the lectures were very high quality. There are weekly readings and one large project that is broken down over the course of the semester. However, discussions were a little tedious and the GSIs were tough graders.
Joanne was an incredible professor! Lectures were recorded, and she was fine with people doing the class entirely virtual. Very accommodating for sensitive topics and tried to incorporate fun activities throughout the semester. My only issue is that I don't think the expectations for the assignments were very clear, including the final project.
I loved the lecture for this class, however, the grades are based on 4 quizzes and a writing assignment leading up to an infographic. My GSI was a very strict grader which affected my grade. Definitely not an easy A but still really enjoyed the class! Attendance was mandatory for discussions not lectures, however Joanne made them interesting!
She is the sweetest lecturer and she makes the lectures very interesting. The class was pretty easy as long as you do the readings and pay attention in the lecture. I heard your grade may also depend on your GSI, but I had an amazing GSI (Laurel Billings) which made the course even more enjoyable.
Dr. Bailey was incredibly kind, knowledgeable, & accommodating. I loved that she was so open about the lecture topics, & really made everyone feel welcome. There's 3-5 readings per week, but don't fall behind since they're all quizzed on (usually not too long though). This was such an interesting course + amazing prof., I'd definitely recommend!!
It's a LOT of reading, and you will be tested on all of it. The class overall was pretty meh in my opinion. I did enjoy the research aspect. I didn't think there was anything particularly special about Joanne—definitely take the class if you want to, but don't take it just because she's teaching it.
Professor Bailey is genuinely one of the sweetest and most passionate lecturers I have ever had! Her lectures were so engaging and informational. Do the readings and the quizzes are easy A's. Definitely recommend!
Joanne was the most caring professor ever. So kind and always thoughtful. If she taught more classes, I would take every single class she taught!! Absolutely amazing, so positive and just overall perfect!
Loved this class! Super interactive and interesting. She's nice and passionate about her work. The class itself was easy - just take notes and do the assignments which were fun and doable anyway. Honestly I have no bad notes about the class or professor, I highly recommend!
JOANNE IS MY QUEEN. I love this woman with my whole heart. I took this class just to fill a requirement but she truly has made me consider doing a WGS minor. This is also the easiest class ever, I don't know anyone that doesn't have an A.
SOOOO great!! I loved Joanne; she made every lecture fun and engaging. In my opinion, the class wasn't difficult at all, super easy A. TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Joanne was such an amazing professor! You can tell she cares so much about her students and women's health, and I felt so supported throughout the course. I always knew exactly what was required for each assignment and we got so much help with each part of our final project. I highly recommend!
Joanne's lectures were awesome and always posted for those who couldn't make it to lecture. She is very knowledgable on the stuff she teaches, and the class is set up in a very organized manner. The quizzes are open note and on your own time, and are easy As if you do the readings and pay attention in lecture. Highly recommend the class.
Super easy class, all 4 exams were online. I didn't go to lecture only discussion and it was very easy for me to understand the material. The "final" is like a science fair presentation on a topic of your choosing that relates to the course. Easy class to fulfill Group B if you're a BHS major.
