Good professor, study guides for tests that tell you what you need to know.
She is GREAT!! know the study guide and you'll get an A
i did the study guides and still got a C in her class. Know how to memorize verbatim.
She listens to student feedback and if you do the study guide you should be fine on the tests. She will make you read the entire book, so be prepared.
This prof is one of the most genuine instructors on campus. She really wants her students to do their very best. Be prepared to read the ENTIRE text. The best part is you'll definately leaving knowing something. Test structure is somewhat difficult.
Really wants you to do well. SOOOOOO intersting. Great lady
ROCKS MY FACE OFF! She's the coolest!
SOOOOOO much to remmember. Ton of material in this class and tons of memorizing. Most awesome proffesor though. She's got great stories, really funny, and super interesting. This class is not easy, but really worth it if you're into clinical psych.
Dr. Brewster is the MOST SINCERE professor I've ever taken. I tutor for her class now (another perk of taking it). If you make an effort she will match it, she cares about her students and the more you try the harder she works for you. TAKE HER CLASS.
She is very nice, but tests are memorization. She also makes you read entire book, and there are stuff gone over during the study sessions that are not in class or book.
An awesome teacher! She is really good at explaining things. The tests are strictly memorization from the book--pulled my first all-nighters studying. Work hard though, and you'll do well.
Be prepared to become an independent learner. Use notes to guide studying, but read the book many times! Plan 4-5 days ahead to study for tests. Study guide helps a lot!! Work hard, and an A is definitely achievable.
Great lady - willin to help you out with anything. READ THE BOOK and do the study guide...know the study guide over and over again and you can easily pull off an A in the class. Her examples are good and she gives extra credit for attending class.
She has funny examples and knows what she is talking about. Gives you a study guide with everything that is going to be on the test and really wants you to do well. Don't take this class if you're going to slack off though because it is hard. Just know the study guide and it's an easy A.
i love this class and dr brewster, she never tries to trick you, tests are exactly what she says they will be, tutors, review sessions and study guides all available. utilize these tools and get to know her. youll be glad you did!
good teacher but TON of info to memorize. few times she didnt even go over 2 whole chapters that were on a test. a lot of independent work, tests straight from book. helpful tho, gives study guides and tutor sessions, and sometimes extra credit.
i adore this class! before taking it, i had no idea what i wanted to do; now i'm positive that i want to be a clinical psychologist! dr. brewster's lectures are amazing; i always look forward to class, and am sad when it's over. be prepared to work hard -- tests are fair but require much prep.
I have taken her for Abnormal, Forensic, Police Psyc Senior Seminar, and others. She is the best prof I have had here at JMU. Her classes are tough, but fair and she is so interesting and knowledgable. I highly reccomend her for anything she teaches! Just study her study guides!!!
Ok besides the fact that class is never boring, and yes it's going to be work, she is just a sweet person in general. She makes you feel comfortable talking to her and is extremely organized. Never have to wait long for grades or posts on blackboard. She may change your life, she did for me!
I have taken Dr. Brewster's abnormal psyc, forensic psyc, and senior seminar police psyc courses. She is an excellant teacher I would recommend her to anyone. She is not the easiest with grading but she makes the course content very durable.
I just took the 3rd exam and I think I have finally mastered the use of the study guide and getting the most out of the book. I guess we will see for my overall grade but the material is very interesting and she really tries to help you. Good overall teacher just wish there wasnt so much info.
Dr. Brewster is great! Everyone seems to think the tests are difficult, but as long as you study, you will do fine. She even gives a very detailed study guide! This class crams a lot of information into one semester, but all of the information is very interesting and fun to learn
loved this class! i wouldnt call it easy, but dr. brewster makes it worth while. its a typical college course except for the fact that there is so much info to cover that it makes the class seem harder. dr. brewster provides every means possible to help her students succeed. shes an awesome teacher and i will take as many classes of hers as i can.
All of the material is very interesting. Brewster's exams are unbelievably difficult, but she provides study guides, office hour help, and oppurtunities to explain your test answers to help get a better grade. One of the nicest professors around.
Very nice woman and a very good professor. Must read the textbook. Provides very detailed study guide that takes a long time to do, but if you do it, you'll be very prepared for the tests. Highly recommend her forensic psych class.
challenging class. but she gives VERY detailed notes - very organized. enjoyable class overall.
superb teacher: lectures are well organized. Throughout the semester, you will learn a ton about disorders. Be warned of psychology student disorder! Tests can be difficult, and it is imperative that you read/study. Other than that caveat, the class was wonderful, I would love to take it again.
She is my inspiration!
I had her for abnormal, forensic, and police psyc capstone. She makes it possible to do well if you put the time and effort in. I wish I could take another class with her next semester. You will learn a lot and she knows what she is talking about. Take her for everything you can.
She's an extremely intelligent woman. Her lectures are very informative but can be a little boring at times (she crams lots of info in them). Her tests are hard, but it is possible to get an A if you do the study guide and study the book. It's a great class and she's a great professor. Take it.
Very nice lady who is well informed and wants you to succeed. However, tests are unbelievably difficult even with her study guides that take days to complete. If you want to get an A on these tests you better find a god to pray to if you dont already have one and learn how to memorize an unreasonable amount of word for word info from the text.
Extremely well-informed and intelligent woman whose lectures are very clear and informative. Yes, her tests are hard, but if you put the effort in by reading the chapters and making a detailed study guide, you will do fine. I've gotten A's on both tests but have literally memorized the entire study guides. You will learn so much - take her!
I loved this class. The tests are hard but as long as you read the chapters and do the study guide, you'll get an A. I just did the study guides and the worksheets and got an A. I didn't even look over the study guide once I had done it. Go to 21 out of 25 classes and get 5 points added on your final grade. final not comprehensive. easy!
Lectures were interesting enough but her tests were RIDICULOUSLY HARD. You had to have the book memorized word for word more or less. I worked for hours on the study guides, did all the worksheets, and still got Cs on the tests. Too hard a class if you just want a psych elective.
Brewster is awesome. the class is not EASY, but if you keep up with the reading, do the work, the tests are NOT that ridiculously hard. She teaches you the material so that you can actually use it one day. Attendance=Extra credit; 4tests (including final). If you want an A, it is possible if you do the work. Helps if you are interested in the topic
Good professor. The class isn't particularly easy, but she has tutors and tons of other assets for you if you want to do well. If you take advantage of what she offers and study hard enough, you can do well. If you're interested in abnormal psych, take this class. You'll learn tons.
Her class is difficult, however she does offer a lot of help. Its a lot of information and you do need to study a lot!
this class is hard, but she makes it even harder to fail. She loves what she's doing and is so interesting!
Makes the class way more difficult than it needs to be. You have to study almost an hour each night for a week prior to the test to get a B. Also a little rude in office hours. 4 tests attendence is extra credit.
One of the best classes I have taken at JMU. A lot of work, but you will learn so much from her. Highly recommended if you are serious about this major.
Awesome and really interesting class. A lot of work but if you can keep up it's totally worth it. She won't cut you a lot of slack if you screw around but if you're dedicated and care about the content she's really nice and helpful
In order to do well in this class, you need to go to class and you need to read and study the book. This is a very beneficial class to take if you are serious about the subject and want to learn the material. She is a great teacher, but you also have to be able to teach yourself. It's work, but it's worth it.
Dr. Brewster is a great instructor. This class involves a lot of reading, but as long as you do the reading and study you will receive a good grade. She is interesting, funny, and fair. None of her exams have any trick questions or anything used to confuse you. She gives study guides that tell you exactly what your exam will include.
Too much! This class should be a 400 level class. Material isn't difficult but there is just so much! She only covers half of it in class and you're left on your own to do the rest. Only take if you are really interested and you don't have a heavy course load.
Don't take this class! She is a sweetheart, but her class is so ridiculous. Tests are hard and cover too much material--most of which you won't learn in class anyways. I would definitely take it with a different professor!!
The class is a lot of material, yes; but this is the case with any professor. Brewster may only go through half in class but that's because no one has time to go through all of them and I loved that she went so in depth with what she did cover in class because she made it interesting & gave a good picture of what some disorders really look like.
VERY DIFFICULT! You're reading the whole book (and the chapters are like 30-40 pages long). She also doesn't go through everything in class, so bring your laptop and type EVERYTHING! However, she does give a lot of help. You can be tutored by her TAs and/or go to study sessions they have before every exam. 4 exams and extra credit with attendance.
Dr. Brewster is an incredible professor. Her class is difficult, and she's very clear about that, but she is very helpful if you're willing to work for it. If you read the textbook and attend lecture, chances are you'll be well off. She gives students a lot of resources, such as tutors, review sessions, and study guides. Love this professor!
Don't be as scared for Brewster as everyone tells you to be. Her class isn't easy, but it's not impossible. She's straightforward with you about the tests and grades, and she offers lots of opportunities to do well over the course of the semester. As long as you read, you'll do fine.
This class impossible. You teach yourself all of the information. Lectures don't make a dent in the info. This class requires an unspeakable amount of time- there literally aren't enough hours in a day to complete the reading/ prep for the tests. This class is as impossible as people say.
This is a very hard class. At least 2 chapters on each test were not taught during lecture, so if you are looking for an easy A, do not take. If you are looking to learning everything on the subject, take her. It's very time consuming, so I recommend not taking at the same time as Biopsych or Sensation&Perception. Extra credit for attendance
Abnormal isn't impossible, students are just used to getting grades handed to them. You should be willing to work for an A and Brewster believes that too. Put in the time and get a good grade. Definitely prepares you for grad school and the real world. If you try to get easy A's throughout college, you're cheating yourself out of your education.
To do well in this class, you have to read the textbook. I don't know why people expect to get an A in a class where you are told day 1 that all the material won't be covered in lecture and the syllabus lets you know that in bolds and all caps on the first page. I learned a lot in this class and Brewster is one of the nicest professors I've met.
Take this class if you're ready to work really hard and learn a lot. Required the most reading and studying that I've ever done, but Dr. Brewster is extremely knowledgeable, has endless resources to help her students, and ensures that students properly learn the material.
At the beginning of the semester Dr. Brewster will try to scare you away but her class really isn't all that bad. A ton of the test questions come straight off the study guides and practice quizzes and she has so many resources for you to use if you're not understanding the material. That being said if you want to get an A I wouldn't recommend her.
I read the entire book from cover to cover (the first class I've ever had to do this for) but it was so worth it. I really enjoyed the class and the material. Dr. Brewster knows it's a challenging class but gives you plenty of resources and extra credit to help as much as she can. It's a completely doable class if you're willing to put in effort.
Funny, energetic, and passionate professor. Attendance for extra credit and only grades are 3 tests and it really helps to do the study guides! I'd say about 50% of the test content is straight from the book- she really means it when she says you need to do the reading! I learned so much and she is extremely intelligent. Highly recommend!
Brewster is a good professor. The class is definitely hard, but abnormal is a hard topic with a lot of material. People don't take her class because they are afraid of trying hard, but if you put in the effort and do the study guides, you will do fine. There are 4 exams including the final, which is not cumulative. She also gives extra credit.
I really like Brewster. She gives you all the tools you need to do well in the class and tells you from the beginning that this class requires work. This class made me realize how lazy most psych majors are because they are used to being spoon fed info. So many resources to help you improve and this class will teach you how to work for a grade.
Joanne was brutal. Hardest class I've takent JMU. So much reading and you have to work hard for a good grade. But sooo interesting, and she is an amazing professor and person. Studying for the tests hurt my mind body and spirit, but at the end of the day I know the subject better than any other subject, and I am grateful.
this class is exactly as hard as everyone says it is. there's a lot of content to weed through so you really have to set aside the time. however, if you do make the time to do the reading, take good notes on what you've read, and spend a good amount of time reviewing this class is do-able. Also Brewster is hilarious.
Joanne's an amazing professor who will teach you everything you want to know about abnormal psych. She expects a lot out of everyone. Extra credit is offered. Be sure to use the tutors. Read and reread, even the little boxes.
This class is hard because a lot of it depends on how well you can manage your time. She tells you what she expects, and it's a lot. But she is up front about it. She is a nice lady, but with high expectations. You need to work hard in this class to get a good grade
This class is hard just like everyone says. Luckily, the information is pretty interesting to most people, so reading the textbook isn't too painful. Joanne seems like a nice lady, she just has high expectations. This class requires a lot of work and focus and will be hard to do well in
This is the hardest class I have ever take. Her lectures are extremely unorganized and hard to follow. Attendance isn't technically mandatory buy you get extra credit from going. She basically reads only a few slides each class that are all in the book, its a waste of time. She makes this class unnecessarily hard. Take with any other professor.
Dr. Brewster's abnormal class is challenging, but is doable if you put in the work. The majority of questions on exams come from the textbook, but the readings are dense so you have to dedicate hours to doing it. Interesting stuff, plus the lectures reinforce some of the harder concepts, but don't put off the reading!
Professor Brewster is such a cool lady, her lectures are super interesting and she tells tons of stories about being a clinician (and there's extra credit for attendance!). Her exams will kick your butt if you don't read the book so crack it open as early as you can and go to review sessions. The class is definitely doable! Loved it!
TAKE THIS CLASS! The material is SO interesting, which makes you actually want to go to lectures. You get to hear her firsthand experience of being a clinician and the patients she has come in contact with. It is a LOT of reading, so do not put off reading the chapters until last minute!
I absolutely love Brewster. Yes, the material is difficult because it's a lot of information! I recommend reading about 10 pages a day which will give you a week before the exam to review. Also, take notes while you're reading. You need to go to lecture or have someone that will give you the notes. You can succeed if you put in the effort!
Online (sync). 4 non-cumulative exams, weekly hw (easy), & weekly breakout groups w/ 6 other students and a TA. Such an interesting class. Even though Brewster's class is harder than the other Abnormal options, I'm glad I took hers b/c I learned so much more. Like others said, just put in the study time, and you can pass (I got an A).
let me tell you that Brewster does NOT teach. let me give you an example... just took a test on 4 chapters and she spent EVERY SINGLE CLASS lecturing on HALF of 1 of the chapters on it. don't bother taking this class if you don't want to teach yourself all the material. oh, and don't bother voicing an opinion on it, cause it won't change.
This is one of the most interesting psyc classes, that's the pro, despite all of the hard work. The con is that Prof Brewster has seemingly not altered the style of her class in years, and refuses to make any changes. Expect unhelpful lectures, unnecessarily hard tests, and plan on not having your concerns listened to when you start struggling.
The most impersonal and non-understanding professor iv ever had. The tests are virtually impossible, lectures are pointless you might as well memorize the whole textbook. If you aren't good at test taking, skip this one, got 100 on everything excepts the tests and have to retake bc of a 69.5..... yep she doesn't round so that's a D. AVOID HER!!!!!!
Brewster was a challenging professors This class was nearly impossible unless your self-taught and did amazing on tests. Homework that take hours to complete are worth nearly nothing. Her lectures are practically pointless when she barely covers all the materials that are being tested on. She may seem sweet but its all an act. avoid her!
DO NOT TAKE. joanne makes the class unnecessarily difficult. there are 4 tests that are fully textbook-based, but she doesn't teach from the textbook. lectures are a waste of time since none of it is on the test. if you take the class, you'll teach yourself everything (50 pages per chapter, 4 chapters to know each test). also just a mean person :(
Joanne tests on 4 chapters and lectures on about a half of a chapter per unit. Her lectures are a complete waste of time and you are required to teach yourself all material from the textbook. She is not understanding at all. Homework is a waste. This class has potential to be amazing but she makes it unnecessarily miserable and nearly intolerable.
she doesn't teach, so don't even bother. spent an entire day (literally) studying for the final to no avail. they're stupidly hard for absolutely no reason at all. I can't believe I stuck through this class knowing that she doesn't teach AT ALL and isn't flexible. lesson learned. save yourself the stress and don't take this class w her.
LITERALLY JUST DONT, WORST PROF AT JMU
DO NOT TAKE HER. Lectures are not helpful at all. We have no grades except for homework which is 3 points and participation which is 1. There are 4 exams that are 75 questions(75 points) in 75 minutes. Not enough time to take exams and she is very rude when you ask her about this policy. I got 100% on every assignment but have C because of exams.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HER SHE IS AWFUL. SHE IS VERY PETTY IN EMAILS AND WILL NOT CHANGE ANY OF HER OUTDATED WAYS NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU PLEAD. EVEN IF YOU GET ALL THE POINTS ON EVERY ASSIGNMENT THE EXAMS WILL DESTROY YOUR GRADE. TAKE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR. SHE IS LITERALLY THE WORST.
You have to self teach. Nothing she says is helpful. Exams are rough because they are long questions and only have one minute to answer each. She will not be nice to you in any way. She sends petty emails and is very rude. Worst class I have taken yet and I was excited to take it.
The hardest class I have ever taken in my four years. DO NOT take this course. Brewster's class is next level impossible. She only lectures on 10% or less of the test content so you will be teaching yourself. I know there are other options, take them instead. I knew this and took anyway because I thought it would be interesting. Big mistake.
This professor does not care about her students succeeding at all. She only lectures on one part of a chapter and you have to rely on the book for everything else. Her test questions are extremely difficult. I have never had more mental breakdowns at JMU than trying to do well in this class. Save yourself and don't take this class.
Dr. B is a very nice lady & is very knowledgable. However, she treats this course as a graduate-level clinical course. If you aren't prepared to devote most of your time to reading the material over and over again, do not take this course. Material is super interesting, but you're tested on the little details. Tests are extremely hard. Tough course
Dr. Brewster is a very sweet lady. So, please believe me when I tell you DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. I am usually a very successful student, but her tests are actually impossible to study for. She does give you a lot of resources to attempt to help; however, there is just so much material you will never be prepared. Be prepared to cry... a lot.
One of the worst classes I've ever taken at JMU. Ended with a B, thank god but Brewster made that so hard to do. A very knowledgeable prof but her exams were impossible. She has a lot of resources to study but if you don't memorize the textbook you'll never do well on your own.. there's multiple times we all told her to slow down and she didn't
