Mrs. Detore-Nakamura is a good teacher.

Workload in her class is relatively low... Make sure to participate, you get a ton of extra credit points for it. She let us have our exams ONLINE, including the FINAL... in otherwords, open book!!! Great teacher overall, fun and enjoyable.

Attendence is major. At least make it to class, even if it's only the last 10 mins. I did that a few times and if ur on her good side, she'll let you sign in. Never give up in her class- you can turn a low C into a 105% with extra cred & participation pts

I can't believe this class!! It is interesting and I like it but the amount of homework is insane!!! So many papers and so much reading... If you are the kind of person that looks at a good class this is not the place. She will load you !!!! Be prepared.

The theme was on monsters... of course it's gonna be fun! We laughed every class period. You also watch movies on the books! Take her if u can... it's a breeze.

Great teacher! Easy going, easy A. Good class for a morning class, dont do much. Prepare your speeches before class 2-3 days in advance, and it will be a breeze.

Awesome teacher. Awesome class... until the end, when you've got to do the group project from hell. Typical length is somewhere between 50-100 pages, NOT including the powerpoint, group journals, etc. But anyway, Dr. N is a great professor. Lots of extra credit opportunities, too.

I started out thinking this class was going to be a B maybe even a C grade. But I showed up for class and I did lots of extra credit assignments (and got an A.) She's a great teacher and I didnt feel a bit nervous presenting in her class!

I dreaded this class from the start. But Dr. D made it entertaining and the class got along really well and had fun. She does give out some work that doesn't include you speaking, but it does have some tie to speech. She doesn't want us to be excellent public speakers, but excellent overall people. Good sense of humor, and very very nice. Take her.

At the start of the semester i hated the class and didn't think i would get anywhere near an A. But as class wore on i really started to enjoy it and i thought she was a great teacher. She does give out busy work but it's at the start of the semester and she gives out alot of extra credit opportunities. She's easy going and a great teacher!!!

Those last two guys must have been slackers. We wrote two reviews and had like two or three assignments. More than other instructors, but I learned stuff. Most people I know got an A or B unless you missed class or didn't do the work. Loved her! This is college. Get a life.

Gr8 Professor. Makes this course a lot easier for people like me who have problems in public speaking.

Pretty Good teacher, her class is alot of fun and she is really nice. Be prepared to do a lot of speeches. She doesn't really spend any time teaching how to speak, so its probably really hard for people who haven't had speech before. You just kinda jump right into it. Overall, though I'm glad I had her and would take her again.

Dr. N. is the most caring and considerate professor that I ever had. Her door is always open and she makes it a point to help you. She isn't easy though, but if you make an effort, she's there to help. Everything I learned I am applying in my job now. Spends time answering emails late into the night if you have a problem. I think she's great.

good at explaining things and keeps class interesting

Good class and does help with speech. Dr. N has a funny sense of humor too. You do a lot of speeches and she grades tough but you can get a feel of how they are graded so you can improve. Do outlines the exact way of her examples and do a LOT of extra credit!

Took the monsters class. Thought it would be cake. Not! Read five classic books & see film, Psycho. Works your fingers to nubs with the writing. Made us think though. Very cool class. Will never see a film the same way. Finally learned how to write a research paper!Gets back to you fast if you email. She was on TV talking about vampires.

Great teacher!!! She's hilarious while teaching. Keeps the class interested. Makes you want to go to class every day. The speeches aren't hard and she gives you advice on how to do the assignment. Very helpful

She is easy on grading, lots of fun, and very clear on what is to be done. I would gladly take her again if I had to.

Good professor overall. She is helpful and cares about students. Not that easy on grading though. 5 speeches, 3 papers (1being a group experiment) and outlines for each speech! Yeah, lot of writing for a speech class. Non-verbal experiment in group at the end of the semester.

This professor is amazing!!

I absolutely loved this class. Humanities was an amazing class because 1) It had literary monsters in it. 2) She's amazing at explaining and clarifying 3) She's a great looking lady (I am a girl) 4) She's extremely smart about what she teaches 5) Lowest grade was an 86 on papers 6) I am taking her for Speech!

Excellent teacher. She helps clarify when you are having trouble with making your speeches. She has some quizes, a mid term and a final, but all are done through Blackboard, so you can use the textbook. Nice and can be funny at times. I would highly recommend taking her

She was a greater instructor for speech! I would take her again if I could. You will never be bored in class.

Good professor. I took her over the summer. The class was better than I expected.

She was very helpful when I had a question. She was very clear with her instructions . I wish she would teach more upper level humanities

Excellent humanities professor. The lecture are fun and amazing. Make sure DO NOT skip the class if you want to pass the class. Read and watch the video the assign each day by day. The essay are a little bit tough in grading but if you have accumulate other scores including extra credits. You will earn an A in the class.

Professor Detore's class is a must take! She explained everything clearly and kept the class engaged! To me, just the idea of me taking a speech class used to bother me but she changed that. She has her own excellent teaching style. She encourages us to motivate each other. She's knowledgable and intelligent and you wont regret taking her class.

As long as you show up, and follow her rubric EXACTLY the way it is laid out, you will get an A or B

Why is there not another teacher like her in the school? Just her happiness to be in the class with us made me look forward to it every day. I honestly walked into class for the first time frustrated that I had to pay so much for a gen. ed. course, but I am so glad to have made a memory with my class.

Absolutely loved Professor Detore! If you put effort into your speeches, and you listen to what she has to say in class, you will pass easily! Make sure to prepare your speeches ahead of time, and actually consider the feedback she gives you.

Dr. DeTore sets the standard that other professors should follow when instructing a class. She is incredibly knowledgeable with the subject matter and expects her students to meet the effort she puts into teach with effort on learning the subject material. This is not a course to earn an easy A, if you want to do well work for it.

I am a Republican & did a pro gun speech. Got an A. Lots of people in my class did speeches on conservative topics. It's Riddle. Didn't matter. If it was good, you got a good grade. She lectures on speech, not politics. She's funny too. Follow the outline format & rubric. Don't miss class. No one needs therapy is her saying. Fun class-interactive

Practical assignments in crisis com. Wrote a crisis plan for a real client, video news release w/green screen, analyzed crisis & how to respond. Assignments posted on the schedule, in the assignment section, and she sends announcements in case you forget. Guest speakers with emergency/crisis experience. Loved Crisis Du Jour!

Easy Class. We did around four to five speeches and all her exams are online. Overall the class was very simple and graded fair.

Keeps class interesting

Great Professor, and person in general! She keeps the class engaged and entertained by telling stories that are relevant to the lectures. We did 6 total speeches with two being group speeches. Definitely recommend, would love to have her as a professor again. I had to go home for a week for medical reasons and she helped keep me caught up.

A solid class overall. 4 to 5 speeches with a couple of essays in-between. Professor Detore, herself is a nice and respectable teacher in the COM department. As long as you give a genuine effort in all your speeches you'll be fine. I would take this class again if I could.

Great professor! This is a very easy class and even if you don't find it as easy as I do, Dr. DeTore is very forgiving and offers many opportunities for extra credit. Honestly, if you do the assignments and put in effort into your speeches you will get an A or a B easily. Regarding assignments, there is mainly just 3 speeches and 2 short essays.

DeTore acknowledges that she has one of the toughest jobs in the world, teaching humanities in an engineering school. But she does a really good job at it. After you give your speech, you can always go up to her and see what she put down on your rubric as well as ask her questions on how to get better. Would definitely take again if I had to.

When everything went online, Dr. DeTore was one of the only professors I had who took time to explain everything in videos. Clear lectures & assignments. She revised the whole class to make it easy to do online. Very caring, answered emails quickly, even in the night. Her weekly updates made me feel connected. Loved her. Would take again.

Professor Detore was an amazing professor. She is very understanding if you have something else going on in life and will work with you as long as you will put in the effort. Before each speech she gives a very clear rubric and will help you look over your speech before the due date. Overall an amazing professor and a very nice woman

Professor. Detore was hands down the most amazing professor I have ever had so far at ERAU. She is the kindest most caring professor I have ever met. There were 3 major speeches and her assignments prepare you for all of them. My only discrepancy with this class was the group project, as coordinating with lazy group members can be difficult.

I did not agree with most speech grades, it felt unfair and biased towards students that made them known to her. there are a lot of assignments that kinda make up for the speech grades which can easily get you an A. The professor is very kind and helpful and will differently help you achieve an A.

Everything you need is on Canvas--all of the assignments with examples of speeches w/rubrics. Many small group activities helped us get to know each other and were fun. Tons of extra credit. She's really funny and cares. She gave me chances to make up things when I was sick. I had tons of anxiety at first, but I got way better. Great class!

Professor DeTore-Nakamura is an engaging instructor who makes this class fun. While the speeches can be daunting, she provides helpful feedback and extra credit opportunities. Unstuck AI was a great study tool to prepare. Overall, a rewarding experience.

Dr. Detore is by far one of my favorite professors. I took her in the spring of 2025, and she was one of my sweetest professors yet. She really cares about her students and celebrates our successes. She cares deeply about her course content and making sure we gain everything we need from it. She's really sweet and funny too.

Pretty good speech class, you do quite a bit of speech's but they weren't hard, She's a pretty good professor and I'd recommend taking her for speech.

She's a good professor and understands that her class may not be your biggest priority. There's also some interesting content and she explains why the class is necessary even if you're STEM-focused. She's definitely worth it if you have to take COM 219.
