boring, unfair markings
i thought her class was kinda fun, the only class i wanted to go to everyday lol
Boring, very unfair marking, treats you like highschool students!!
organized, clear
high fail rate
Are we adults? Bitter feelings
awful. horrible. she knows nothing about nothing at all. stay far far away!
Tough to those deserving of such treatment. Clear and concise writing style = A.

Her style of teaching is adequate. She may appear a bit timid or standoffish at first, but once you talk to her, she is nice. Her marking is fair, but she expects students to attend each class and to arrive on time.
She's very redundant..is a nicer person when you show you try to improve and talk to her personally...too bad 20/30 people decided to drop the first two months...don't take her if there is another teacher to choose from
classes are not very productive
Poor marker
She is so picky! She is a really hard marker and focuses to much on grammer! If you have a choice...NOT TAKE HER!
horrible- pointless lectures-rambles
Hard marker, boring class, overall ****, dont take this class
comes off very snobby, her class is taught like a high school class and she tends to ramble about pointless information
I dropped the class
I also dropped the class. Very unfair in her marking. Treats students like high school students
SHE'S A DOCTOR in english, yet makes tonnes of mistakes on her handouts/own notes. 1 grammer mistake = 1 letter grade. 3/4 of class dropped.
awesome teacher, super friendly. be there or be square
This was the only english class I got a C+ in, she is really tough. She is not an easy marker, and I don't think anyone in our class got above B. She is nice, but if you need a good grade, do not take her. She is extremely tough.
Didn't seem to have any direction. Almost lost it and stormed out of the class because students questioned her marking and teaching style. Read all the plays and take part in class discussions you should escape with a C+, but that's alot of work for a C
This woman ought to be fired, for God's sake...
Very good instructor with decent, interesting lectures. Assignments were difficult but worthwhile. Skills taught by her have been of great help in other classes.
doesn't help u with anything. bias towards students who are not very good in english.
agree with earlier post - total bias towards english speakers. repeatedly couldn't pronounce one student's name to the point that it made many of us uncomfortable. also not willing to debate conventional usage. needs to either re-educate herself or retire
super friendly if you talk to her. but make an effort and she'll reward you
totally agree with earlier posts, have no consideraton towards those English's not their first language, if english is not your strong subject, definitely avoid her
hmm, i always got A's in English, it is one of my stronger subjects - I got a C+ with her, but as I continued taking other teachers my grades went back to the usual. She's a really nice lady, just super hard and not too clear about her expectations. Unless you have a phd like her, don't bother.
This teacher is biased and her marking techniques are unfair. She gives everyone a C and not clear about her expectations for assignments. Acts like she knows everything and is stuck up like she is better then her students. Takes everything to heart and hates criticism or evaluation from students.
Good teacher. Really nice. Just do good work on assignments and work on the essay. Ask for help and she's more than willing to help.
i totally agree with the early posts. she is bias towards native speakers of english and makes you feel uncomfortable if your first language isn't english. don't mess with her, just try your very best.
should realize something's wrong with her teaching style if more then 50% of her classes drop out. hate how she says it's important that do this presentation and then later tell you, "oh, it doesn't affect your final grade anyway, it's only worth 5% of the PROJECT"
very hard marker... avoid her im tellin u... I dropped the course...
Below average teacher. Does not seem happy about her job most of the time. Does not seem like she herself fully understnads the material. And if you are more than 5 minutes late, she will lock the door on you, so you are unable to sit in on the lecture.
Her lectures were passionless and slightly frustrated. She couldn't answer basic questions. Instead of delving into real theatre history, she would put on a movie and have the TV do her job. We need a passionate actor/theatre nut to teach this class. Someone with passion and Pizzazz...especially since it is always an 8:30 class.
god how useless a teacher she is!!! she comes late to the class everyday and is boring like no other teacher out there. i would have dropped if i didnt NEED the course
Ok. The class may be useful for Studio 58 students, but not at all for regular students. It's pointless. Spent hours watching movies. She is nice enough to help you understand her expectations if you go to see her, but very unclear in class. if i had known what the class was like, i wouldn't have taken it. not recommended.
This teacher is more disorganized than i am, and thats bad. She reminds me of chicken little, no one know what the hecks going on with her. I can name a time in each and every class where she forgot something or didnt know what was going on. She seems like a nice person but a very bad teacher.
I had a project that I received help on from this instructor. When it got handed back, she marked it all wrong, and she's the one that helped me. I do admit that my grammar can be off, but still after getting help, you'd think that I would've received SOME checkmarks. I'm still choked over that. Warning: Very Critical!!
I switched to the online version of this program after three days of her. The premise is professional presentation and communication, right? She demonstrated what not to do every day, and wasted my time. Not prepared for class, not organized in speaking or materials.
wow.....It's nice to know that others feel the same way I do... Joanne seems like a nice person, but I really wonder how educated she is on the topics she teaches. My biggest pet peeve with her is that it's a course on PROFFESSIONALISM yet she seems to be UNPROFFESSIONAL! She decides what to teach DURING class! I don't want to pay for this! argh.
god help you all... get out while you can!!! Transferring into the online version of CMNS1118 is the only option to escape the ultra boring, ultra disorganized Horwood... and for those of you who are actually in her class- GOD SPEED!
She is the worst teacher i've never had. She doesn't give any feedback when you ask your mid-term, or some report project works. she only says "I am not sure".Also I warn you who is not a native speaker in Canada because she never pass you and never help you out at all. She is totally bias and wrong. Don't take her class. I want her to go back to s
really... how do we kick her out of langara?
hard but fair.
aahhhhhh....where to begin?! everyones pretty much said it, has no idea what she's about to teach in class, has no idea HOW to teach. waaaay to strict with marking. a great person, but not such an amazing prof.
If you are registered, Drop out. Its not worth forcing yourself to wake up that early for such a ridiculously worthless class. If she had any passion, it would be worth it. But she doesnt. AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS. She is a nice woman outside of class, but other than that -AVOID!
Joanne is very helpful, excellent teacher, and totaly understanding! She helped me all the time her class and office hrs. I would totaly recommend her to anybody! She does mark a bit hard, but just read the book, attend classes, and ask questions and you should pass with an aweseome grade! It just takes a bit of effort and you'll do fine!!!
hard marker
hate this teacher..she gave me an F on my paper because she THINKS that half of my sentences have grammatical erros. but my tutor checked it for me and it is not THAT bad to receive an F !! shes HARD and unfair.
She isn't well-orgainized and tend to have a few typos on her reply to students. doesnt tell you which area of writing you should improve on.instructions are vague.the class is more like a seminar rather than a lecture.
She is an awesome wicked teacher!! As long as you attend classes you will pass everything with flying colors. All of her exam questions are discussed in class so you know EXACTLY what to write :D awesome teacher high ly recommend her!!!
The worst instructor in the dept, she is so vague and unclear in her instructions. Don't take this course with her.
she is very vague and unhelpful. Her written instructions are confusing, and inaccurate. Be prepared to fail the course.....
Don't take this class unless you're extremely exeptional at writing essays. She is a nice teacher, just extremely hard marker. It's hard to understand exactly what she wants from an essay even when you ask for help. Do NOT take the 7 week course unless you have no life and can focus all of your attention on this class.
woooooo
Taking both 1127 and 1129 condensed is a bit challenging; however, the work load is manageable. If you want to learn how to write an exceptional essay, take Joanne?s class. She may be a hard marker, but she's fair and will tell you what to work on. After taking this class, you will definitely excel in second year English.
If you attend her class regularly you will get a lot out of the lectures. Her choice in course readings is excellent, I really enjoyed it all. She is very clear as to what she wants to see in your work. Her marking is tough, but fair. If you constructively participate and make an effort you will be fairly rewarded. The workload is very manageable.
Attendance is recommended for this class. Workload is manageable but could pile up fairly quickly. Overall, a very nice teacher although a hard marker. Do not take this class unless your English is exceptional.
Unless your English is like top of the world, do not dare to take her class. She is not clear about what she wants and she is not a hard marker, she is a harsh one. One of the most opprobrious experiences in school. She does not know what she wants, even if you ask, until she is marking your paper and her comments are unpresentable.
Avoid at all costs!! If you are an A student who speaks english well, then be happy if you get a C+... Very hard marker, and her class is useless. You wont learn anything and youll get a bad grade to show for it.
HARD MARKER!! Impossible marker. GPA KILLER FOR SURE! always late, unclear in what she wants, makes tones of spelling mistakes, unlegible comments on assignments, unpleasent to look at, and forgets EVERYTHING! And as result ends up changing due dates on everything...Avoid her like the plauge. How'd ya like that metaphone Joanne???
She is seriously a horrible teacher. She's so unorganized its not even funny. Often forgets to bring course material to class. And for someone who has a PH.D in English, she sure as hell makes a lot of spelling mistakes. True story: One day I walked passed her and I noticed she was mumbling/talking to herself. = not a good sign.
Leaning and Improving are more important quality than just being checking our grade by teacher without learning.
She encourages you to drop the course, which I think is wrong. But she is probably a good teacher for some people. Not me. Good luck in her class.
Joanne was our teacher for the first half of class, and then just disappeared one day so this is only rated on a couple of assignments. I found Joanne extremely helpful, friendly and nurturing, especially if you show up to class. She certainly had her scatterbrain moments, but we never found out why she left, might have something to do with it.
:( , I regret taking this course with her. Didn't know my english was THAT bad, a mood/gpa killer for sure (no offense). Personally, I would be envious if you get a B-.
God aweful. Class was online, she is terribly unorganized. There would be 3 different due dates for 1 assingment. Or different instructions for the same paper. And all the time she said "I don't know how to change it". Her comments on papers are completly unreadable. I doubt she logs online everyday (which you should for online courses).
horrible experience!! Very unorganized, and unclear about what she expects from assignments. Very bias towards people who's English is not perfect!!!
should not be teaching.
I have always checked rate my prof. usually just to make sure i dont signed up for a course that has a terrible prof. well i will never sign up for a class that has TBA for there prof because that is what happened to me with horwood. NEVER TAKE A CLASS WITH HORWOOD!!!!!!
The worst english instructor at Langara in my opinion. Marks really hard, really disorganized, and the fail rate is 50% in only two months. If you want your GPA to decrease by alot , then take her.Not passionate at all, very weird. Please stay away from Horwood or else!!
Should NOT be teaching at Langara at all!!! passionless, disorganized, lazy, boaring, . once again, should not be teaching. with all do respect
no explanation of assignments. students works hard on assignment but highest possible grade is C-/D
if you know your high school grammar, then grammar may not be a problem for you (although i barely passed her grammar diagnostic test). if essays are your enemies, then she may not be the best teacher. hard marker with somewhat legible writing (50% of the time) and not-so-clear objectives at times
avoid this professor at all costs. she is very picky on grammar and she is a hard marker.
Worst teacher I've ever had. She really has no business teaching. For a Dr. she has a very poor grasp of the English language. Do not under ANY circumstance take her class. I wish I had dropped out while I still had the chance. She gives very vague assignments yet will mark you poorly when you don't give her exactly what she wants.
Worse teacher I have ever had after having attended 3 different post secondary schools. She wastes our time, obviously doesn't want to be teaching us and gives awful marks with little to no input on why. I really wish I had dropped her class on the first day.
very very poor quality
no comment period.
good luck to the next sem students
She's a difficult professor. Only CMNS teacher that has a midterm. Yeah, we might be "getting more out of it", but her methods aren't really engaging.
If you want a good grade, do not take any of her classes. After receiving a bad mark, I talked to her during office hours to see how I can improve and she basically told me to do whatever I want. She's very unclear, and she's a tough marker.
She is not a mean woman. Personality wise she is very nice! However, attending her class is pointless. The constant quizzes force you to read the textbook, and then in class she just repeats it. I definitely learned something in this class. But she barely gives any feedback. If you take Communications, I suggest taking it fully online.
Joanne assigns lots of homework and assignments through out the semester. You don't get marked on the homework, expect a participation grade, so why put in the effort? Lecturing isn't one her strengths, and her PowerPoint slides often contain mistakes, which is funny because she's a really hard marker! There is a midterm which was written by hand.
Whatever you do do not hand in work early. she is a brutal marker unless you hand in items last min. then she is an easy marker. she often leaves things to the last min herself and has to rush through her marking. She uses a lot of power point and is not that helpful.
Her teaching style is erratic, and she is very unclear/inprecise as to what she wants out of her students. The notes she gives are pointless, and she will never give a direct answer to any question. Probably the most useless teacher I have ever had.
see ratings.
DO NOT ATTEND THIS CLASS. Joanne is scatterbrained at best, constantly changing her mind about assignments and their due dates. She grades ridiculously hard and gives awful feedback, changing her mind at whim. She should have never been an instructor, she has no focus and doesn't know how to convey ideas. You will regret taking this class!!!!!!
Scatter brained, inconsistent, unreliable professor. Feedback is useless as she changes her mind on a whim. Difficult marker which is ridiculous considering what she wants is always changing. Unorganized, wastes a lot of your time trying to sort herself out. Acts like her class is your top priority, get ready to have to compensate heavily.
Despite having passed my previous English courses, I did not do so well in her English 1129 class. She was a very hard marker and unclear about what she wanted in our essays. Although I had asked her for help, understood the material and corrected grammar mistakes she still gave me a bad mark. Many people including myself were below B average.
She is not clear about her objectives. All your work no matter how hard you try will have the word "vague" written all over it and if you try hard, you will get at least a C-. Not an active or exciting prof either. I don't recommend taking her class.
Had NO choice but to take her to fit my sched. The red flags were there. Helpful, but she gives vague feedback. TOUGHHH marker. Her marking scheme is enigmatic and her teaching method can be disorganized. Writers/studs beware! I highly regret taking her and I won't be graduating anytime soon cuz of that. Beware! You have been warned. :)
I am really getting mad on this website that we cant give rating less than 1. She deserves 0 in all fields. HARD MARKER. not clear what she wants in the exam. Sets c- grade min for midterm 20% to pass the entire course. No matter how you perform in rest 80%. Am really surprised why colleges do not take any action against dis typ of professors
She is genius
At first, I hated it. Comm is a half online course; there was a LOT of homework. The quizzestests were helpful; it was clear they were not meant to hurt our grade. The assignments were given individually and then we worked in groups each week to made improvements. BUSM students should be used to group work. She was very clear with what she wanted.
honestly loved her class. one big thing I cannot stress enough is when she brings up her office hours in class...(HELLO! A HINT!) GO TO HER OFFICE at those times! she is there to help. It is clear to me that she loves her job! hands down, she is definitely a pretty rad instructor. great personality. great teacher. great person!
run while you can..
Unclear on grading criteria and unclear on the exam expectations. HARD MARKER. Avoid if you can.
Very dry, boring - and she is super strict when it comes to phone use... do not touch it! Feels like i'm in high school all over again. Same stuff, different day with her.
Dr Horwood has an amazing taste for books and literature, thats great. But the bad part about her as an instructor is that she changes her mind all the time about things you two agreed on, like orientation regarding papers, etc. You have to try your luck. Her marker is tougher than she is. Sometimes it looks she comes unprepared to class.
Disaster!The best advice: AVOID her!
I had a good experience. Very approachable and helpful. Of course you have to work hard, but she helps if you seek it. I would take another course With her.
Although her marking is tough, it does help you improve your writing. So if you serious about improving your writing then she's a good professor to take
I found her course fun and interesting. She expects you to attend class and work hard. You can not just attend her class and expect to slide by with a bare minimum effort or attitude - which is what is expected of college! Speak up! Interact in class. Work hard. Shes very fair and always able for help if needed. Her lectures are very interactive!
Learned a lot, Dr. Horwood was very giving of her time outside class.
I won't be taking her classes again. The lectures were terrible, the teacher constantly forgot class materials, her line of thought, extremely disorganized. We were behind on the subjects we were supposed to learn. She made a laughable amount of mistakes in her own work (even many spelling errors) but penalizes you a lot for your own small mistakes
She is not clear with her grading. Several people in the class didn't understand what was expected of them. And the few times I went to office hours I left feeling more confused than before. She does not listen to what you say but only wants to hear herself talk and she thinks she's the only one who's capable of the "right" ideas.
Not even the second week in of her class and I already wanna drop it. Sadly I need to pass it in order to get into UBC.
Very tough grader, picks on the tiniest things. No way to please this teacher unless she writes your paper for you herself.
I took her online class and she seemed VERY disorganized. Her expectations kept changing and I found it difficult to navigate as she posted things all over the place. Maybe shes better in person- but I wouldnt recommend doing an online class with her.
Very dismissive of students opinions. Her opinion is the only right one. If you dont make your essays on something she already thinks you get a bad mark. Makes essays a sort of pressure that feel impossible to succeed. If youre taking this mandatory class, good luck.
You have homework every single week. This was honestly the easiest part... it was easy to get marks because of this but be prepared to fail during in-class essays and take-home essays. The highest mark for our take-home essays was a C+... everyone else got C/D. She is a VERY hard marker and when you ask her for help she knocks all your ideas down.
Dr. Horwood was great! The novel was actually really good and easy to work with! Participation in class is combined with easy weekly worksheets for 15% of your grade. There were 3 essays, 2 short, 1 long. She is available and willing to talk outside of class to help with your essay. Mid-term and final were both essays, but not super hard.
First half - she marked so hard, wasnt helpful, but got A- on the final. A lot of people dropped, failed their first paper or got C-. Im pretty the final was scaled, we were all doing pretty bad before. I went to see her for help, sometimes she was good, at times she didnt give you anything. Make sure you write her way, structure is key!
She is a tough marker. The entire class struggled in Dr Horwood's class.
Professor Horwood was extremely disorganized. Her course material was littered with misspellings and was really difficult to follow. She arrived 10 minutes late for our midterm and forgot certain materials. Overall I was really disappointed in this course.
She is the worst teacher ever. Marks very very very strictly.
Joanne is a fine and helpful prof. Her marker on the other hand is an absolute handful. The marker does the most intense and picky marking i've ever seen from anyone at Langara. Grading is inconsistent between the prof and the marker. The marker deducts points for the most obscure things and there is 0 room for error in your writing. 3/10 class.
Simple do not take courses with no matter what. She is the worst instructor I ever had not even only in Lanagara. Please don't make a mistake as I did.
Worst instructor I have ever taken. She will give your full marks for assignment as long as they are submitted on time, but she will fail you literally for 1%. If you are fail in midterm worth of 20%, you are fail in course. She does not care about rest 80% of course . She will give you F grade in midterm just because of grammatical mistakes.
Joanne is very picky in marking, yet she herself frequently makes a lot of spelling mistakes. Very disorganized, rude and unhelpful also. Failing the midterm means failing the course. More than half of the class failed. Avoid at all cost.
LITERALLY WORST CLASS IVE EVER TAKEN! I still talk to class mates about how awful she/the class was. I learned nothing. She marks super hard and picky and anything that isn't her opinion/perspective was wrong. Plus the stuff she got us to read was so boring and no one liked it. 10/10 would not recommend.
i took this class in 2019 and i still have nightmares lmaoooooooooooo
I did not trust previous students' comments, but they turned out to be true. I never experienced anything so unpleasant, confusing, disorganized and disheartening in the form of online learning. I would never recommend that anyone waste their money and time on an instructor so inappropriate (e.g. political remarks) and uninspiring as Ms. Horwood.
I took her class because it was the only one available. Worst professor that I have come across in my entire life. Her instructions are unclear, and so is her feedback. She won't oversee a grammar error but she will not take the time to look at how your name is spelled in the entire course.
Too strict. Her standards are too high to meet. Objectively speaking, she is a brilliant professor. She is supposed to teach at year 3 for English major.
Let’s start by saying I am an honour roll achievement student with a CGPA of 3.77, an IELTS average of 7.5 and an A student in ENG1123. I had read the review on this website and believed myself to be able to work with a professor with such poor rating. This was not the case! I advise against taking any English courses Dr. Horwood.
I have a 4.0 GPA. I've been in school for years and am only taking this to fill a requirement that won't transfer. In this class, it's impossible to do well. She is an incredibly hard grader. I think it's a shame - so many 1st term students will be discouraged and fear future classes being hard too, which is not the case btw.
I am saying this again. Please DO NOT TAKE HER COURSE. She will fail you miserably if you forget a comma or make a single grammatical error. Course is disorganized. Please for GOD SAKE do not take her course you will struggle. Skip a semester rather than taking her as your tutor.
Worst class I've ever taken. She is not open to any other opinions/perspectives about the literature we read besides her own. Classes were SO boring. Very hard marker. She is so picky its almost impossible to do well and almost half the class failed or dropped out before they could. It was hell. My friends and I still have war flashbacks.
I agree with most that yes she is a hard marker, but I do feel like I actually became a better writer because of her class, it gave me a lot of discipline in a way. Don't recommend her for first year students but if you're up for the challenge and aren't discouraged by asking for help more than once she's not that bad.
I would give her 0/5 if that was possible. She is an extremely tough and picky marker especially for first-year students and her expectations are absolutely ridiculous and are impossible to meet and believes only her opinion is correct. Also, I had an English tutor for this course and I still received 60% and below for most of the assignments.
