I thought I wouldn't survive the course... aaaaaaa
OH BABY... Hard to UnderStand at times...Can be Fun...
Enthusiastic, intelligent and makes the material come to life - love the demos

Joanne was great. Very interesting and easy class.
i'd rather chew my arm off than go her classes. made me hate the material.
If you do the reading you will do fine
She was ok, but not very interesting, loves physics though
Very passionate with her teaching. . .she makes everything looks easy
Brutal final!!!!! Astr 113 students - watch out, study hard!
Agreed, the final was brutal, kinda unexpected
Very hard course, and I'm an A student. I found the labs taught WAY out of sync of lectures. Joanne: focus on EXAMPLES in class, NOT DERIVING FORMULAS!!!
I thought time could've been used more effectively; she spends far too much time deriving formulas rather than applying them to examples.
wat r u guys talking about? I think she's one of the best prof out there, she spends too much time deriving formulas just so students know which one to use in any problems given too them...
Very helpful and nice.
Very nice, knows her stuff...cute!
She is a WONDERFUL teacher! She's enthusiastic and knows her material. Tries hard to keep the class entertained by using lots of models, diagrams, pictures, and telling jokes. The quizzes and tests are generally not that bad. Very interesing, fun class.
Very clear and easy to understand. Presents material in an organized, concise way. Made herself very available for extra help. Almost made physics fun!

Very nice lady, but if you learn from examples probably not for you.
When a student comes to ask for help, it's because they can't figure something out. Maybe you should try helping instead of telling them to look at the text, you are getting paid to.

Vacuous/amorphic mentality readily suited to academia, with a personality ideally suited for a life in the ivory tower. She has her PhD, don’t you know, and doesn’t mind sharing this information ad nauseum.
Joanne is a good teacher. She is a sweet lady and is always quite prepared. Physics is relatively boring but she did a good job teaching it, JOANNE: The demos and the slides (mountain climbing) were enjoyable and added zest to the class!
Great!!!!She makes me want to pursue astronomy,
Pretty annoying, but she gets the point across. Seems to struggle with the enthusiasm aspect, she wants it, but it seems out of her reach.
Joanne is a great prof! She is a fair marker, and very nice and helpful.
Joanne is an excellent prof who shows enthusiasm for every course she teaches. She is definitely a *prof* - this isn't highschool kids, you're *supposed* to do some work yourself and not have everything spoonfed to you. I found Joanne more than willing to clarify stuff I didn't understand.
Boring classes...
Nice lady, a good class. She is thorough and her notes are helpful. Good teacher.
She's nice, and always enthusiastic. Many long derivations make for a good nap time, but then came that ridiculous midyear -- guess I should have paid attention, it's just so hard at that painfully slow pace.
excellent teacher. very helpful and interesting. if you need science credits, take astronomy with her.
Joanne is awesome. She is very clear in her notes and writes down everything important. She is very open for extra help, and tries to explain things until you understand. TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE and it makes for a happier Joanne! If you do all the problems sets & understand them & study, quizzes are easy. Joanne is a great prof :)
Prapare yourself this is definatly not a course to put on the back burner! Her patience level is quite low but she is very clear and quite friendly. She does play favourites so you may feel a little left out. Joanne is witty and has great stories about her family. I didn't like her notes and she doesn't guide you step by step!Good luck!!
No patience. Expects all students to be as in love with the physics as she is. Expects way too much out of students. Hard marker, if you don't do a question EXACTLY like she does on the board expect to lose 30-50% of your grade, even if you get it right.
Pretty easy classes. Joanne does a good job in making it pretty consistent with text material. She can be very nice, just be respectful, as with anyone. Derivations make all the difference. She does it so you can understand the material. Very nice lady, will help research unrelated material for you if you ask nicely.
I took Astronomy b/cuz i needed the science credits, and i'd take the nxt level with Joanne too. She helps explain complex orbits and rotations that can't be grasped through words. Shes a good teacher if you can stand long lectures.
Very approachable and ready to answer any questions. Lectures were clear and to the point (sometimes with fun little extras). I am glad she teaches first year physics.
Joanne is very helpful and really wants to make sure you grasp everything in the course. Her exams are fairly easy as longs as you read the text and powerpoint notes. I thought this class was going to be difficult but it really wasn't because of Joanne!
An interesting class. Basically lectures to powerpoint presentations, but her tests are based on the text and the notes, so make sure you read the text! Lots of funny stories and an enjoyable class overall.
Joanne's class is the worst class i've ever taken: if you have a concern with your exam results, don't try and confront her...she doesn't care-very subjective...if you take this class, just read the text, don't go to class-->very boring for most people
Terrible class and worst prof I've had. While her notes are clear and through, they are extremely boring. Tough marker, esp. with assingments and exams. Seems unsure of her subject, always answers questions with a "Well I'm not sure, but I think.." Why are you teaching if you just think? Know your stuff and at least sell your subject!
Awsome professor! Very clear and knowledgeable lectures. Obviously fond of the topic herself, Joanne brings appreciable enthusiasm to the class room! I highly recommend attending lectures..she adds helpful notes and diagrams on the board that could make the difference between you understanding the topic or being confused.
great makes the class easy for every type of student
Really nice prof but if you actually go to class bring a pillow or something she loves to use every minute of every class but otherwise than that she's super nice and loves what she's teaching so you'll get thorough instruction
A great professor and a great class to take, she knows so much about it and is very enthusiastic I really enjoyed every day there! A lot to memorize but also a lot of interesting stuff to learn, the final exam was quite hard, alot of material to cover, but she does a great job of it!
Joanne is very passionate about astronomy. There's a lot of information to cover in this course and tons to memorize (the final was difficult). You don't really have to read the text book because her notes are very thorough and she doesn't require you know anything beyond the notes. She's really fun and has excellent examples for all concepts.
Wow I really enjoyed her class. Her powerpoints were concise and included visual tim-bits for visual learners, her demonstrations were interesting and totally relevant! I loved her enthusiasm for astronomy! Also using the telescope in the evenings and her knowledge and availability in addition!
Joanne is honestly my favourite professor so far (I'm a second year) i just find her class so welcoming, no one is afraid to ask questions and start a discussion. She has very clear examples and as long as you pay attention to the notes (they are all on moddle) you'll do fine in her class. Definitely recommend, will have her again if i can!
Took the fourth year nuclear physics class with Joanne. She was a great teacher. Very organized, very thorough when answering questions, her exams were completely fair, and she was always willing to help if you visited her in her office. She's so nice and goofy, wish she taught more upper level!
Joanne is an awesome prof!I actually enjoyed the class a lot more than I thought I would! You can tell by the first day that Joanne loves what she does. She's really nice and funny, and she always does demonstrations for the hard things, and they help a lot. I recommend. :)
Only teacher I've ever seen give part marks for incorrect multiple choice questions.
She's hilarious, always has fun interactive props and stuff that make learning more fun. Learnt a lot of stuff but never felt overwhelmed by any of it. my love may be biased though because she did give me my first university A+ :)
Cannot stand her as a teacher, although content was super easy she should not be teaching first year physics. Especially when she says "its my first year teaching this course".. Tests had stuff we'd never seen on it and improperly prepared for the final.. Switched out of her class 2nd semester.. Avoid her as a first year physics teacher
Extremely obvious that she does not understand the course content, if I had not done the curriculum a year prior I would be lost; as it seems all my classmates are. AVOID HER FOR PHYSICS
Good teacher. Tests are right out of notes, as long as you ask for help she will give it to you. She's a generous marker as long as you have an idea what your doing, actually found the final super easy. This was her first year teaching 1100 because she usually teaches 1150, the more advanced course, so yes she knows what she's talking about
Solid prof. Good notes & delivery. Fair tests. Good jokes. No complaints - recommend.
excellent prof.i think the best tru has got for physics.extremely helpful.hilarious!
Joanne made astronomy interesting to me! The class was at a good pace, and the notes were easy to follow. She didn't talk about the textbook much in class, but still required you to know a lot from it for tests.
Fantastic Prof. Would take her again.
Made astronomy really interesting, and Was easy to follow along in lecture. She writes her own notes on an overhead projector while going through lecture so you know what to write, really helpful.
She's one of the best professors I've ever had. :) She is very clear and enthused about the material. Her tests are also very fair and straightforward.
Joanne is a very fun and energetic prof that loves what she teaches. Does model demonstrations in class that make you laugh and understand. She has 1 textbook for her classes reserved at the library for those you can't afford it. Class requires basic understanding of chemistry. Grade determined by assignments, midterms, and final.
Joanne is great, she explains things really well considering my class if full of people that know absolutely nothing about astronomy, or science, or common sense as it seems sometimes.
Joanne is great, I would have no qualms about taking another class with her. ++ articulate, organized, prompt marking, explains the significance of things and uses interesting examples, provides excellent homework packs, tests are straightforward, plenty of opportunity to do well. -- Kind of oldschool in her expectations, but totally reasonable.
Joanne is an absolute gem. She is sweet, hilarious, and an absolutely brilliant professor. I had an interest in the material beforehand, but she made me even more excited about it! She makes her own models to help explain the harder ideas/theories, etc. and she is thoroughly geeky in the greatest way possible. Would take her again any day!
Her notes & lectures are poorly structured & unorganized. She often jumps back + forth from seperate ideas. Assignment questions are equally unorganized and unclear; had to email her constantly for clarification. She writes poorly worded questions and passes it off as you having to think about it. Good grades arent hard but prepare for frustration
I loved Joanne, her lectures were great and you can tell she loves her subjects. She writes extra notes on the overhead projector while she explains things which is really helpful. Everything on the tests is covered in class, but you definitely need to show up because not everything is explained on the slides posted to Moodle.
Joanne is the best professor! She's sweet, funny and passionate about what she's teaching! Her lectures combine PowerPoint, overhead notes (for further explanation and better diagrams) and fun hand-made models to ensure you have a complete understanding no matter which way you learn. If you put in the effort, you will do well in her class. (:
Super friendly prof! Great teacher. If you have a science background super easy A. If not, study the material and still an easy A. Lectures can get a little long, but make sure you keep up on notes and studying here and there and you'll do fine. Assignments are quite easy and prepare you well for the exams. Wants you to do well. Textbook is free.
Joanne is probably the nicest professor I have ever had. She is incredibly sweet and understanding and always does her best to make sure the class is keeping up with the material. She explains the content of the course very clearly.
Type A pos who won't help even if you ask for it. Seriously this woman is the worst, don't take her class if you don't have to.
Joanne is a polite, encouraging, and caring prof with a beautiful smile. I definitely enjoyed taking classes with her because of her personality. I have had enough with rude and difficult professors in the past. So having her was a good balance that life is not always tough. Thank you so much Joanne for being such a kind person in my memory.
Joanne is a great professor, she is very knowledgeable about the topic and she takes great care in teaching it. Would highly recommend her astronomy courses!
A really amazing prof! Super fun and interactive in the class! Has super cool demonstrations that help your understanding. Class is hard if you don't pay attention! Take notes!!!
I was always able to get help and Joanne was always patient and kind to me. Her demonstrations helped me to grasp concepts and they were always entertaining. Her exams aren't easy, but she will never throw a curveball. As long as you prepare accordingly for assignments and exams you'll be golden.
Joanne is lovely! The explains things clearly and is eager to help when things don't make sense. If you miss a class I'd advise getting notes from someone, as sometimes she writes things down that aren't in the power-points. Study lots and you'll do great
Joanne was great! Clear criteria on what she looks for on quizzes and test, and she is an extremely fair marker. She is also willing to help outside of class and is able to explain subjects in various ways in order for you to understand. She is very efficient at teaching, and her slide sets were very useful. Weekly practice sheets were also great.
Joanne provided slidesets with the notes and was very nice when it came to marking quizzes and tests. She was easily accessible outside of classtime via email or office hours and cared about her students.
Joanne is honestly the best prof I've ever had. She is such a great teacher, very clear when explaining things. She doesn't throw any curveballs in her tests, it is all material in the notes and textbook (which is a free download!!!) which I appreciated. I hope to take another one of her classes someday! She is just awesome! :)
Great experience with Joanne for 2 semesters. Was very helpful, organized, and easy to follow. She made sure we kept up to date with our learning with weekly quizzes and posted practice work regularly. Her quizzes and midterms were very fair as long as you paid attention in class. Would recommend taking.
Knowledgeable, caring, and helpful. This physics course was not easy by any means, however Joanne made it a very valuable learning experience for me.
Joanne is the best teacher I have had thus far. She is helpful, caring and provides different teaching styles for every student. Although this course was difficult she made easier to understand and was nice marker would definitely suggest everyone to take her class if possible.
Very clear and concise assignments and information about quizzes and tests, fun demos and a very caring personality that makes sure everyone is able to succeed. It was great to be in her astronomy class both in my first and last semester at TRU, and I'd definitely recommend her courses if you're interested in astronomy.
Easiest professor I've had so far. Her lectures are so thorough and she has a "leave no student behind" mentality. Clear grading criteria, and super knowledgeable.
Incredible teacher in all aspects
Great professor and has a great attitude towards teaching. She's more than happy to answer any questions you have about the material, in or out of class.
Joanne is a lovely prof! She is always nice and understanding and has lots of office hours. The class is marked on a lot of things but the midterms and final are the bulk of it. They are cumulative, and her slides are posted but she adds information to them not included. Overall great class and great prof.
Joanne is a fantastic professor - her lectures are engaging, and she makes complex topics easy to understand. The free textbook is a huge plus, and tools like unstuck study really helped with my studying. If you put in the work, you'll do great in her class.
