Awesome teacher!!! Explains things clearly!!!
Good teacher. Picky on the HW.
She's very energetic and definitely makes sure you understand what is going on. She actually makes class fun.
Very helpful both in class and during office hours. The homework was time consuming and is graded, so expect to invest some time in this class. Material was interesting and interactive. I learned a lot in this class.
Amazing teacher. Explains things so you can acutally understands them and uses real life to put things in perspective. Very enthusiastic which rubs off on students. Very easy to approach and ask questions.
Awesome, awesome professor--incredibly helpful, class is very interesting, reading is actually interesting, short papers you choose are not hard, just make sure you do your homework and bring it the day it's due!
I like her teaching style. Very clear, very enthusiastic. It's so easy to pass her class. Most of the grade is from homework! My only problem is that the material is fun only the first half of the semester. After the midterm it gets so boring! But if you have to take LING, take it with her for sure!
I highly recommend this teacher if you have a chance to take her class.
Awesome teacher. Very enthusiastic.
This is one awesome professor! I love her teaching style and how she is concerned that each student pass the class as long as they try. TAKE HER!!!
Awesome teacher!
very interesting class, she is very helpful but it is not an easy class, with effort you should be able to pass, go to office hours.
Jocelyn is the best. All future English teachers should be required to take her linguistic classes.
Absolutely one of the best professors I have ever had! Her enthusiasm is outstanding as is her knowledge and application of the subject matter. She really ties it all together in an understandable and meaningful way. Take this class (or any of her classes!)…you won’t be disappointed!
Great teacher! Very understanding of her students. She makes learning fun while keeping the stress level down. It was a privilege to have her as a teacher
She talks fast and moves around alot. She grades more for personal experience than facts.
Great Class.. is required for all Liberal Studies students... I truly recommend her!! Its a bit difficult, but you learn a lot!!
Love her! Interesting material, do-able assignments, and extremely helpful. Recommended!!
One of the nicest professors on campus.
Awesome professor...she made a subject like lingusitics highly enjoyable. Her passion for the subject became contagious in the class, I highly recommend her!

She's definitely one of the best professors at CSUSM! Although the subjects she teaches are not easy, she makes them fun to learn. I'm very lucky that I met her!!! Highly recommended!!! Oh but sometimes her classroom is packed with too many people - at the beggining of semester, go to class early and get a seat to sit on!
I learned to love linguistics because of her upbeat attitude, her creativity, and her endless supply of enthusiam for the subject of linguistics.I definately think she is an excellent professor and could easily see her pulling in the big bucks from a more reputable and prestigeous institution; but we are so lucky to have her here at our lowly schoo
Probably my favorite teacher so far at San Marcos. She explains things very well so you are never suprised when it comes to tests. The material can be very overwhelming but she makes it seem easy. I've learned so much in her class.
I am currently taking this class, and Jocelyn is one of the greatest teachers I have had while in college, period. She makes herself easily accessible to students, and is more than willing to explain something twice if it doesn't click the first time-which it might not-She goes over a lot of technical information. She's awesome!
There are no words fit to describe Professor Ahlers
She is very nice and will make time to help you if you need it. Class is super easy and lowkey atmosphere
I love Professor Ahlers. She's funny, knows her stuff, and keeps the class interesting. She acknowledges the fact that not everybody knows the material right off the bat so she'll go over everything until she's sure everyone gets it. Encourages people to go to her for help. Easy tests & take-home final. Keep up wth the work and you'll be fine.
Keeps class fun and interesting most of the time. No need for homework - she tells you everything she wants to read in your (many) papers.
Best professor EVER.
I love jocelyn, the class is hard but she makes it fun! Class is always interesting and she is always ready to help if you have questions. Take her class you will enjoy it
I was not sure what to expect from this class or teacher but she is really friendly and you will need to read the text to help you do your homework for the class. Do ALL of your homework because it counts a lot towards your overall grade.
She was the best professor I have had at Cal State. She's really enthusiastic and loves what she teacher. She is very helpful. The homework is really helpful as well and her tests are fairly easy. I would take this class over again just to have her again!
She is AWESOME! Best professor at CSUSM. I LOVED this class, with a passion. I'm taking her again this semester for 300. LOVE her, she has a wonderful way of teaching, class is FUN and INTERESTING. You will learn SO much, and enjoy learning too! She's wonderful, definitely recommended.
She is the best. Clear, helpful, friendly, knowledgeable and very enthusiastic about the subject. I took Contact languages and she made me love this field of linguistics. Homework was always fun, not hard, we had no tests in the class.
Dr. Ahlers is wonderful! I didn't like grammar before I took her class and now the concepts are crystal clear and easy to understand. She likes to add humor to her lectures as well - we always heard about her love for chocolate cake :). Have fun.
Amazing professor. Absolutely love her. She is sweet, smart, and funny! This class is fun and she teaches linguistics in a way that is fun and not intimidating. Don't be afraid to ask questions. She is wonderful and I recommend her to anybody.
Fantastic class! Prof Ahlers is passionate about the subject and genuinely wants students to learn. I am picking up a minor in Linguistics because of this class and the way the professor presented the material.
I think this class could have been extremely difficult but she definitely made it easy. The tests and workload were definitely manageable. Great teacher.
Jocelyn is a very fair teacher and her class is clear. If you are confused in her class you better ask right away because the information you learn in this class is continuous and you are always using it throughout the semester. I would recommend her to any of my friends!!
Great Professor!! She teaches the material so it's easy to understand. You know how to do the homework because she shows you examples that are identical. Not intimidating at all (can check your work if you choose to do an example on the whiteboard), very helpful! Take home final. Take this class, she's the best!!
This was a fairly difficult class, however Prof. Ahlers will continue to help you until you understand. She is available during office hours, and I highly reccommend going! The tests are challenging but reflect the material on the homework and classwork. She is very understanding and tries to make a dry subject entertaining.
Awesome professor! She's really good at explaining even the most confusing things in a way that makes you understand.
Jocelyn is an awesome professor! She is super laid back and funny. Ling isnt my major, but she made it really interesting to learn about. You can tell she loves what she does. And the class is pretty easy, 7 short papers and participation/attendance count. Do the readings, homework and participate in class and you got an A.
There is a lot of reading and it is very difficult to understand, but she is completely sympathetic and will give you good tips that will really help you in other classes. She is awesome and I would recommend her. I wish all my teachers were like her!
Great professor! She was extremely helpful and nice. The material does get difficult as the semester goes but attend class and obtain help from her and you will pass. 8 hw assigments, 2 test, 1 take-home final exam, attendance/participation points make your grade.
AMAZING professor.. I usually hate when a professor makes you go to class and takes attendance but it really is for your best interest. ALWAYS willing to help and is an amazing professor that will help you whenever needed. Book needed, do homework, go to class, and you will at least get a B
This teacher is amazing and inspiring! Her lectures are fast paced and filled with tons of interesting information. There were weekly homework assignments, a midterm, and a take-home final. All of the work was fair and I learned a ton. Take this teacher!
Professor Ahlers is enthusiastic & eager to help. She encourages you to participate. I did HORRIBLE in the class, but that's because I underestimated the difficulty of the material as well as missed several lectures due to severe illness. If you are not in class on a regular basis, you will fail.
Wonderful, fair, great teacher, and knowledgeable in her field. Provides clear answers to questions. She is everything a great college professor should be and I admire her a lot.
I loved her! She's so passionate about the material she teaches, so she makes everything fun and interesting. She's so helpful, and is always there when you need her. She's a fair grader. Everything you learn is from the lectures, so you must attend class. HIGHLY recommend!
Dr. Ahlers is one of the best professors I have ever had. Not only do you learn a lot about linguistics in her class, you connect it to real life situations. Her readings (yes, they're REAL academic articles)and class discussions will challenge everything you think you know! She is so knowledgeable and she makes her classes incredibly interesting!
She's so passionate about what she teaches, she literally jumps up and down! She's very approachable and helpful, one of the best professors I've had, I loved her class. She does go super fast, and it seems really overwhelming in the beginning, but it does get more clear as you go along. I loved her and her passion for everything inj life!
Great professor! nice, helpful and funny! Take her class!
Best. Teacher. Ever. You look forward to going to class everyday to have heated discussions that tie into the material. Coursework is lengthy, but if you put effort into it, she is an extremely fair grader. I would love to have this amazing teacher again!
Awesome professor! Best college course i've ever taken! Made class fun. Homework was not very demanding, but really helped with learning the material. Highly suggest this class!
This woman is AMAZING! She is by far the best teacher I have ever had. She makes class fun and she has a great sense of humor. She also is extremely helpful and makes you feel very comfortable. You have to go to class if you don't want to get lost, but that's because of the course work covered, not because of her. TAKE HER EVERY CHANCE YOU GET!
LOVE Prof Ahlers! I have taken LING 100, 300, 480 and will be taking 381 with her in the fall! She is funny, enthusiastic, passionate and helpful! Over great professor and person! Highly recommended, and you will learn a lot!
This class is very interesting and is not manhating it just speaks the truth about our language that was made by men. Ahlers is brilliant and will help you in any way she can! Just ask and use her office hours. The topic essays are hard but show up to class and take notes to help with your thesis statements. I love this professor!! Quality teacher!
She make LING pretty fun and the discussions were really interesting. There is A LOT of reading, but it is fun. You have to read or you won't be able to write about all the articles read in 3 essays.
I LOVE Professor Ahlers! I've taken multiple classes with her and I enjoyed each one. She is so passionate, energetic, and very open to everyone's opinions and ideas. The atmosphere of the class is nowhere near dull nor constrictive, and she really does care about her students, academically and beyond.
Professor Ahlers is a GEM. I hated linguistics going into this but she made it fun and bearable. She is very enthusiastic about the subject and cares for her students. Take her you won't regret it! She's a doll.
Make sure you understand all of the definitions so that you can use the terms properly in the observation papers. Get a good group, group projects are important.
Funny, loves what she teaches, very approachable, and will not move on until she knows everyone understands the concepts (important because they all build off of each other). Attendance is important to understand everything, but workload isn't heavy/overwhelming. I definitely plan on taking more LING class with her. I highly recommend Dr. Ahlers!
Great professor! The class may be a challenge at times, but it is something that you could push through because the professor is willing to help. She truly cares about her students and I highly recommend taking this class with her!
Professor Alhers is great. I loved her class. She cares about the students and wants you to pass.
Hands down the best teacher I have EVER had! Cares about her students inside and outside the classroom. Thoroughly prepares you for your exams. Actually wants to teach students who will become awesome teachers as well. Genuinely kind. Changed my depth of study to Linguistics and will be taking her for as many of my classes as possible!
Professor Ahlers is an AMAZING teacher and human being. I changed my minor to linguistics just a few weeks after being in her class and will take as many of her classes as I can. She really knows her stuff and wants her students to learn. She offers LOTS of office hours and will help with HW and the final! Definitely take her :)
Read the articles and answer the questions as you go, do your summary as soon as you read to help yourself with the topic essays. Show up to class! Lecture time really helps develop your topic essays for the reading. Not a fan of the group paper but that is just me. Learned a ton, be prepared to read and write. No tests.
Excellent teacher. This class has SO much reading though and its hard high level reading. The last half of the class is rough because you have 3 topic papers and a group paper to do, which is all you're graded for the entire class. She loves her subject. Is very helpful and responsive. Would take her again.
I have taken two of Dr. Ahlers classes. She really does get to know her students on a more personal level. While she is one of my favorite professors that I have ever had she definitely is not an easy grader. I recommend taking Ling 100 with her over Ling 381. Ling 381 consists of a lot of reading and writing papers. Ling 381 isn't an easy A.
Dr. Ahlers is the best. Not easy but youll learn so much about how the world works; much deeper than just a professor. Take her
If you don't go to class you will be lost. She does care and want students to do well but the content is more difficult than it needs to be for LBST majors. Make sure you ask questions and do the homework. She also does mindfulness exercises before lecture begins. Final is take-home. No extra credit. Homework assignment, quizzes, and 2 midterms.
Such a kind human. Not an easy class. Requires effort but well worth it. She wants you to do well. Ask questions if confused. She is so understanding and she's a teacher that you want to have a good relationship with. Not an easy grader but class is still manageable with dedicated time and effort each week. Be thorough! If you need anything, ask!
She is amazing! No textbook, but lots of reading from articles/academic studies.
Professor Ahlers is the best! Truly one of my favorite professors EVER! She is so kind, caring, and patient. She never makes you apologize for having questions and does her best to make sure every student is helped. No extra credit, but she is very accessible and fair. Some people struggled with this class, but she clearly wants everyone to succeed
Professor Ahlers is an amazing professor! Despite being over zoom, she makes every class enjoyable with the way she teaches, and she makes sure her students understand something before she moves on. I barely did not pass the first time I took Linguistics 100, and taking her class the second time changed my outlook on the subject! Take her!! (:
This class is tough but she always is willing to help and give you an extension if you need it. She is really fun and has so much to teach you. There are articles to read for each class and occasional assignments. Her grading system is so cool! No letter grades, so you have the opportunity to redeem yourself. A must take professor!!
If you have the chance to take this professor for any Linguistics class, DO IT! She made me decide to take it as a minor because of how awesome a professor she is! Linguistics can be difficult but she still gave me the confidence to want to take more classes! Truly cares about every student and includes mindfulness in all classes which is amazing!
I do NOT recommend taking this course if you are doing summer enrollment. There are up to 7-9 assignments due each week for the 5 week period. The course work is overwhelming. There are a lot of pointless discussions and her questions can be confusing.
Please do not take this course over the summer. It is extremely demanding and requires 9 hours of coursework on MWF. There is so much to read, you cannot complete! 8 essays + 4-5 participation responses + 4-5 reflection essays+ 1 video assignment + 6-7 quizzes. You will not be able to breathe!
Do yourself a favor if you want to keep your GPA good do not take this course. Especially, if you are doing summer enrollment. The workload is very heavy which is ridiculous because it's an introductory course. Her discussion questions do not make sense. There are no tests but she's a really hard grader. Good luck!
Lots of assignments, discussions, and reflections. Her expectations are super high. If I could I would go back in time and NOT take this course! This class sucks balls for real!!!
(Summer'22) Granted it was a 5 week summer course, the workload was superb. There was lots of reading, writing, video, reflection and essays-discussion style. But I admire Prof. Ahlers effort in compressing important information in various forms of learning. Her expectations were clear and her critical feedback will better you as a student/person.
My favorite professor!! Class was challenging only because there were a lot of long, academic articles to read. No textbook, no tests, but you have to read and participate. She is so caring and I learned so much about the class and beyond! Be ready to work, but she is so kind and flexible, don't be afraid to approach her if you need help. 10/10
the sweetest and most encouraging professor i've had at this college. starts every class with a mindfulness exercise and really makes it known that she is there to help you. lots of readings for this class but all were very interesting. only a few assignments that you're graded on, but she is very accessible outside of class and responds quickly.
One of the best professors I have ever had. She has high expectations but lets you know early on. Reading assignments on Perusall every week and no tests, but she expects you to engage with the material. She is a tough grader but has a unique (sort of lenient) system for grades. I would recommend her to anyone interested in the class subject.
She is an amazing professors and cares about every student. She is very reasonable and as long as you let her know what is going on she will extend deadlines. You do have to read a lot of long articles, but some are short. Do the readings and you will pass the class. Also there is a transcript project which was fun.
She's a great and sweet professor. The class is lots of reading and writing and the lectures are discussion based. She doesn't really tell you but she does grade for attendance so try to be there for the most part.
Prof Ahlers is such a sweet and caring professor, she genuinely cares about you and your well being. Before each class you have to read a lengthy and pretty difficult reading but you get into groups and discuss it each class. There are no lectures just what you learn in the readings along with no tests but lots of writing assignments.
The class readings were pretty dense. There are three topic essays where you have to synthesize a theme, connect the articles for that section, and summarize each article. Before each essay is due, we come up with main ideas of each article and come up with themes. These we write on the board (be sure to note these somehow).
I LOVE prof Ahlers and I'm so sad I can't take her again next semester. :( Her class was certianly demanding. There was lots of reading, but the articles are actually quite interesting. Besides the reading there are a few essays and a final project. She is very flexible if you just talk to her. She is genuinely so caring and fun to talk to.
Dr. Ahlers is an amazing and intelligent professor. She cares so much about educating her students and genuinely the most intelligent woman I have ever met. She grades with an interesting system but it helps in the end. A lot of article readings and difficult essays but she is always there to help. If you love linguistics you'll adore her!
Professor Ahlers is incredible. she starts each class with mindfulness. she is so intelligent and encourages discussion and critical thinking. she offers great feedback and makes the class very welcoming. if you need to take LING, take her
Iconic professor, amazing teacher, really, really, really harsh grader. If you're looking for an easy A don't take this class, but if you're looking for an incredible professor who clearly cares about her students and the content she's teaching this is it
