Jodi is a great teacher who is very willing to help out her students. Of course she likes to become friends with them...so do most of the Com professors! Some of the other rankings prove that people will complain about anything! Her tests are hard, but she gives study guides that help alot.

Jodi is a fun teacher. I dont ever mind sitting through class. She makes the material way easier to read that what the books has. The study guides help a lot. The class definately isn't too tough and she even lets you out early occasionally. Just go to class & its an easy A!!!!

I like Jodi a lot. The tests are hard but if you do the study guide and study alot you will do fine. And you don't have to be her best friend because I am not but still have a 90 in the class right now. I wish she taught more classes!

Jodi made me decide to stay with the Comm major. Her teaching style is so easy to understand, and she is very helpful, you just have to ask! She wants you to do well. She is a great professor. Just write doen her real-life examples during lecture and you'll get an A.

I loved Jodi. She has an awesome attitude and is incredibly enthusiastic. She's one of the most accessible professors I've had, and she does a good job of providing study aids and guides to the students. She also does a great job of explaining theories and ideas that may be tough to understand.

I LOVE THIS CLASS! It is the only class I look forward to, even though it is my only one on Fridays. Class flies by. Interesting class discussions happen frequently. Tough grader...ask questions if something's not clear. I have learned a ton. Group presentation is the majority of our grade.

Her lectures are very interesting, there's definitely no problem staying awake! I loved that she had a lot of guest speakers, that was really informative. She's also super nice & always willing to help. My only complaints: sometimes all of her drinking examples can get a little old. She's also not very organized. Notes can be confusing & random.

Jodi is awesome! Dont get confused-- this is NOT a blowoff class. But she is wonderful and is always willing to help. She is funny and entergetic in lecture and makes lectures the best they can be. She even let us have the week before Thanksgiving off because we were so far ahead! How cool is that!?! She's awesome!

This class teaches you how gender effects EVERYTHING around you. Write journals, big group presentation, portfolio, 2 tests, a few papers(tough grader). Class discussions were great. I loved going to class! I had to work my butt off for an A but I learned SO much. This was the best course that I have taken thus far at ISU. Jodi is great.

I had Jodi Hallsten for Intro to Oral Comm. at Heartland Community College one summer. She has a great sense of humor, and is very fair and lenient with grading. She gives you credit for trying, and tells you how to improve your presentation style but nicely. Giving speeches in her class was never dull.

She is a good teacher and you can learn a lot, but she grades way too hard. Definitely plays favorites (doesn't seem to like dudes).

I took this class online and dont recommend it. She had a lot of high expectations, but was very helpful and made it very clear what she expected & replied to questions quickly and always gave tons of feedback. Lots of work and difficult, but the gender content was interesting, so that made it easier. I recommend taking her if u are willing to work

Jodi is a great teacher and cool person. The class was very interesting except not very thought out toward the end of the semester. She helped the class out on tests with study guides that pretty much tell you what the entire test is over. Very cool person outside of class also!

Jodi Rocks my World! I WISH she taught more classes, truth is, I am only in it b/c I HAVE to take it. Jodi is SO high energy, she MAKES you want to learn; you want to do well in the class for HER! She is amazing and I hope she knows that. Her T.A. right now is Bobby Heugel, is equally as wonderful an educator! :)

Jodi is kind of AMAZZZZZING! I freakin love her and she's absolutely hilarious. She's very quick and fun and appreciates a sense of humor, but also maintains authority and gets things done. I wish all professors were like her because I LOVE her and she's awesome to talk to outside of class too. :-D

Take com 111 with Jodi! She's super cool! She's younger, so she illustrates the theories by using examples from her life that are usually hilarious and that we can relate to. The first test is a killer but the rest aren't too bad. Just come to class and study and you'll be fine.

Jodi was a very fun teacher. She presented the material in a very understandable way. The online quizes can be tricky at times, but if you argue it in class, she will go an change the grade. Hopefully she wont make you do the group project.. took up wayyyy too much time for a gen ed class.

She is very nice and energetic. BUT, only take this class if you have time to do a 10 person group project. She wants to make a difference on campus by having three week campaigns, but it takes up so much time; she acts like this is the only class we have. We also have online quizzes which are not updated with the edition of the book.

Jodi is an energetic, passionate and hilarious teacher. However, she is very challenging. Do not expect to slack off in her classes. She expects/requires a lot from her students, but you receive a lot in return. It's recommended that you try and work closely with her...life's about networking.

I'm pretty conflicted on this class and I think that has a lot to do with the infamous Bobby the TA. He makes the tests unnecessarily difficult. Jodi seems to love him even though he has no personality. The lectures can be engaging at times, be prepared to write down EVERY WORD and study a minimum of 4 hrs for each test.

if you can-take this class in the summer. The class is supposed to meet for 3 hours and we were there for an hour and a half at most-she knows what she is talking about and is really excited about the class. She's kind of quirky but fun and nice. She answers email's quickly but yeah she takes a while for grades.

I took this class online during the summer where Jodi and Amanda Frioli taught. If I had to do it again I would not have taken itin the summer. I definitely found all of the material interesting, but did not want to work during the summer. I wish I would have taken it during the year so I could take my time in doing the assignments!

Jodi is definitly my favorite professor this semester. If you show up to class, pay attention and take notes..you should be alright. She usually has a few things from the book that aren't discussed in class, but look at the study sheet she gives you and you will do great.

Wow I loved Jodi! She was such a good teacher! She could get jumbled once in a while but she was great at giving examples. Tests were challenging but if you study you'll be fine. Come time for the final, you'll know your stuff because she's good at teaching! Go to class because attendance is 15% of your grade, i highly recommend her!

Before every test you should take a few hours to fill out the study guide and crossword puzzle from her website.Practically everything on the test is contained within, and the answers are almost all in the text.This makes her lecture useless, but go to class anyways to get that good attendance grade.Just sit in the back and play snake for 50 mins.

Jodi is an amazing teacher. She is still young enough to relate to her students. She is funny and likes to talk off subject sometimes but she is very serious about her work. Take any class you can with her She's wonderful!!

Great teacher. I enjoy communication theories so much. I have learned a lot and I apply all the theories and comcepts in everyday life.

Really good teacher. Exams are generally easy, as long as you study for them. Great sense of humor and able to relate to students. Make sure to keep up with reading, because some of the test questions will be from the reading. Easy to approach, open for suggestions. Great professor.

You can tell media is not her specialty, but she still teaches this class really well. She digs in to each aspect of mass communication (including history) and does a good job at it. Tests are easy if you pay attention and take notes. Remember to do media interactions, they help base your grade.

Best advice I can give you: GO TO CLASS...she takes attendance with the clickers. Also, the first test is going to be hard and you want to get your grade off to a good start so fill out the ENTIRE study guide for all tests. Complete your engagement activities early in the semester and do ALL extra credit she offers @ the end of the semester!!

I never realized how much I'd use what I learned in this class throughout my college career. But trust me, this class HAS helped me greatly. She is wonderful at teaching and it burns in your brain...forever.

She is a fun teacher to have. You don't do much during class. The tests are not that hard, do the crosswords she provides they help a lot.

This is a difficult class if you don't go to class and don't read the book. If you go to class and read the book, you will be fine. She may be offensive at times, just don't take it to heart. Talk to her and give her an idea of who you are, it will help you in the end. Overall, good teacher.

Jodi's awesome and easy to look at. She's real fun and can relate to her students too. With that said, some of my friends call her the test-nazi, she finds ways to make easy information very confusing on exams. Also takes awhile to post grades online. She definitely makes the topic interesting though.

She's really nice and easygoing, and her lectures and movies are all pretty interesting. However, she makes her tests WAYYYYY too hard, and there are only three of them, including the final. Study hard for the first test otherwise you will have trouble pulling out an A.

Makes tests way more complicated than they should be... Easy material, but words questions in a way that makes them hard to understand. Takes FOREVER to get grades back, and she is not good at responding to email. I did enjoy the films we watched in class, and the engagement activities.

Great Instructor - hard, but fair tests

In class today she said somebody should,"take out" Glenn Beck and, "we would be better off if he was dead." As you can see she can get way too carried away and has trouble thinking before she speaks. She's a pretty good teacher but pushes her far left viewpoints on her students way too much. Would take her again if I had to, but not if I didn't.

Great lady, fun class, interesting topics! However, too many videos & tests aren't too easy.. even after completing the study guides.

She has a way with explaining things material in a sort of story format which makes it a lot more interesting. She is very easy to understand. Tests are kind of difficult but if you go to class and study a little you'll be okay.

WAY to many large projects/exams at the end of the semester! This course made me want to SCREAM! Id take it when you have an "easier" semester. The MAJORITY of the class failed/had to rewrite the midterm!

Jodi is hands down my favorite instructor in the School of Comm. Very supportive, clear and funny. I enjoyed the guest speakers because it helped me figure out my major and who I want to take classes with next year. Her TA was awful, but Jodi is amazing. Take her!

Jodi is great! She likes to talk a lot and sometimes gets a little off topic, but she gives a lot of examples in class. She calls on 4 people every day to see if they did the reading, but if everyone is there (most of the time) she gives out study guides. If you study and pay attention, you will be fine. Love, love, love her! Content is easy to understand if you take time to digest it. I highly recommend finding a study buddy because it helps a ton to talk the theories out before each test. Expects you to do the readings for class and calls on 4 students at the start of each class to answer questions. Tests really aren't too bad if you study.

I love Jodi!Her class was not difficult to understand or keep up with at all, and her student teacher Sarah was also very helpful. The tests were not hard at all as long as you kept up with the readings.Attendance was not mandatory, but if most of the class was participant then there would be a study guide for each exam and TRUST ME it helps a lot!

Jodi is one of those professors that you will either love or hate. I adored her. She is one that many of the students talk about. If you go to class take good notes and study you should be fine. I thought it was great because all the guests were EXPERTS in the theory we were learning about and were the professors we'd get later. I thought it was awesome and helped me learn about the major. Tests are HARD but really fair.

Do not let Jodi or the content intimidate you!! I was terrified the first few weeks of class, but then I realized it was EASY!. First test is the hardest. 4 Exams and 1 final are your only grades.

Jodi was by far my favorite professor of my freshman year. She is a fun, energetic person who is also a fantastic professor. GO TO CLASS, and STUDY for the exams, and you'll do great. Really tough if you dont study. Most people got a C. The tests were hard so be sure to get a study group going - it helps! SHe is really nice and funny and the powerpoints and lectures are really interesting, but the tests are, once again, really hard. Don't be afraid though. She is super nice and cool.

Jodi was a great teacher! All the points are from tests and online work. There were a total of 5 tests that you MUST study for. She gives a great study guide and will answer any questions you have. She was fun and gave great examples for the theories. Def take her.

going to lecture is really helpful because the examples she gives help you remember. the class is only 5 tests. if you study and go to lecture, you'll get a good grade. She randomly calls on people to answer questions, so if you want to not look dumb, do the reading.

The class is for sure hard but if you do your reading before lecture and participate in class you will pass. Use study blue and quizlet to study for exams. Jodi was nice enough to bump up my grade at the end of the semester. So if you show that you care, she will lend a helping hand. Good luck!

Tough class, even though it is a 100 level. I think it may be designed as a "sifter"... get ready to work. It pays off to work hard in this class, because it really does prepare you for all of the in-depth study of theory to come in upper-level classes. Her lectures are always interesting and entertaining. You better have read before class though..

You have to buy the online code to do assignments. Interesting subject. I enjoyed some of the videos we watched in class. I expected to get a higher grade in this class than I did.

She is excellent! Was willing to work around my schedule to meet and talk about grades and was always quick to answer questions. However, this is not an easy class. She expects you to work, but is there to support you.

lectures were actually interesting, and we watched some awesome documentaries and videos that actually made you think about certain problems in our society. the tests were tough, and it is a heavy course load, but it was so much fun. it's nice to have a professor every once in awhile that you can tell actually enjoys her job.

Anyone who said that COM 160 is a hard class is crazy. Honestly just go to the lectures, do the study guide and you will do fine on exams. You will have to do some work outside of class but just showing up on movie days and staying off your phone, gets you 10 points.

Jodi is absolutely awesome! This class is hard because people don't show up and expect to learn everything in a day! If you go, it is easy AND enjoyable. The movies that you watch and her lectures open your eyes to everyday things that we've probably never given a single thought to! Book will REALLY come in handy with tests! Overall amazing class!

Basically if you expect an easy A you won't get one! Jodi makes you work for your grade but at the end of the day she is my favorite professor because she actually gives a damn about all of her students. She has helped me on numerous occasions and always gives me the benefit of the doubt. She makes an attempt to have a personal connection with you.

Dr. Hallsten is incredible!! She is energetic, funny, friendly and engaged during lectures. She takes this difficult course material and breaks it done in a way that anyone can understand if you put the effort in to get an A. Not only did she help me succeed in her course, but I amazed my other professors with the information I retained!

Jodi was amazing! Normally, I am always willing to skip any lecture classes I have. But I never skipped this class. This was, by far, my favorite class here at ISU. Jodi is hilarious and is willing to reteach anything you don't understand. I love her pop culture references and how they're used for examples (watching Friends to understand AWESOME)

Jodi makes Com theories as interesting as possible. She is passionate about teaching every lecture and makes it bearable. It's not a tricky class unless you don't show up to class ever. You can't really understand theories unless you have someone explain it to you, so go to class. You have 5 exams and have to do packback every week.

Honestly, if you utilize the resources that she provides with (such as going to the dept. tutor or attending study sessions) you will be fine. She really does care about her students. Read the material provided and try to interweave these ideas into your everyday life. Theory is hard to grasp at first, but it's important to know.

Dr. Jodi is the best professor I've had at ISU. She has a gift for teaching and she's extremely caring. I talked to her after class a handful of times and each time she remembered every detail. Her teaching skills are exceptional and the class was interesting. Our grade was based entirely on 4 or 5 exams.

So not knowing how to calculate your grade in a 1000 point class does not make Jodi a lazy teacher, it makes you a lazy student. Take this class, make an effort, you'll be fine. I invited her to an extracurricular event I was hosting and not only did she show up, she sat front and center and insisted on paying the cover to support.

Jodi is a great teacher. Her COM 160 class is pretty cool. You will need to go to each class and just listen. I never took notes and I passed with an A. You watch a lot of movies and overall its a low stress easy A class.

Jodi kept Com 111 entertaining. She is bubbly, and makes the class easy to stay engaged. The exams are challenging because they are application based, but she provides numerous resources to help prepare. She really cares about her students doing well.

The tests are difficult but she gives a lot of resources to help and she always answers any questions you have. She's very accessible outside of class. She provides outlines for her lectures and study guides for her exams. Her lectures are entertaining and she is great at applying the theories to help you remember! I'd definitely take her again!

Amazing lecturer, she puts the material in a way that is easy to understand and learn. She assigns too much reading which complicates things. Very difficult class bc of how much information is covered but as long as you go to class and do what she tells you its manageable. Her exams are all application based so don't just memorize, learn examples.

Have taken two of her classes and they were really enjoyable. The tests were hard but not impossible. I strongly advice people to take GOOD notes >write down EVERY example she gives during classes it honestly helped ALOT. You have to understand the material don't memorize it! Jodi is awesome. Sometimes she takes up half of class time to push her political agenda, but other than that she's funny and caring about her students. Show her you care and are interested in the class, and work hard on the papers. Homework answers are on quizlet.

Show her you care by being in class, going to tutoring, and visiting her office hours to look over test. If you care, she will help you.

Absolutely loved Jodi and Com111. While the reading material was very dense and often hard to understand, Jodi had thorough reviews in lecture and provided lots of examples to make every theory easy to remember when it came time for exams. Do not skip class, you won't learn ANYTHING, a lot of the examples she gave in class were on the exams.

She's hilarious and so relatable and wants to teach and opens students eyes to media issues. I changed up my schedule so I could have her again for com111 and com110

Jodi is really cool and explains theory very well. She loves questions and never has a problem with elaborating. There are two projects and they are very very easy. You need to make time to study for her tests but they're not impossible. Take Jodi!

She's a good lecturer, I learned completely form her lectures and not the reading or assignments. The work, projects, and test are reasonable and average. The TA's are not good lecturers. She gets too political while saying "I'm not being political, I'm telling you the truth." so thats annoying but every professor is like that unfortunately.

I absolutely adore Jodi. The one's who don't like her are most likely the ones who don't want to put in any effort. Yes, it is a difficult class for it being a 100 level, but I enjoyed all her lectures and was excited to go to class. She's very insightful and I could listen to her talk forever. One of the best professor's at ISU hands down.

Jodi does not just give you a good grade you have to work for your grade but she genuinely wants you to learn the material. Many people that don't like her don't pay attention or stress themselves out. One problem I had with Jodi is she is not consistent with putting in grades. I do wish she cared more about that. She's so nice and is on your side!

Jodi was an amazingly compassionate professor in a time where we have all been struggling. She truly wants her students to do well and that is seen in the way that she instructs and interacts with students. Learning is hard for some online and she did everything she could to make the class accessible to everyone.

Literally my favorite teacher at ISU, so personable, so amazing, cares about all of her students. For COM 111, you need to actually try and actually go to class to get a good grade. It is a tougher class but Jodi is so accommodating and amazing that you want to keep going to class. I love her so much I wish I could take more classes with her.

Jodi has been my favorite professor at ISU so far. She is engaging and goes with the flow based on how the class reacts to her material shes prepared. She is very good at getting students to be comfortable speaking in class and having fun while also learning.

I took COM 160 as an online course with Jodi and I loved it. Although it is a lot of work, it truly taught me many things and after it was all said and done I really enjoyed this course. A lot of people say she is a tough grader, but as long as you read her expectations, you will be fine!

Although the class was online Jodi was very helpful and easily accessible the entire semester. She genuinely cares about her students and wants them to succeed. There is a good amount of assignments for each unit, but she does her best to make them enjoyable while being informative. Jodi is a great professor teaching a great class. Highly recommend

Honestly don't listen to the bad reviews. Jodi is amazing, she completely changed her course and it was my favorite class this semester. You need to show her that you participate and care about the class and you'll do well. She really wants her students to do well and is always so helpful.

I honestly was scared to take this class after reading other reviews, but her class was by far one of my favorites. Her lectures were interesting and engaging, and although she gives a decent amount of work, it's not hard at all. She sets thorough expectations and truly cares about the well-being of her students. She also took away her tests.

Jodi's class was the first class I ever took that I felt smart in. Every opinion and idea was discussed respectfully and she had a very open minded attitude about all subjects. All of the course work felt relevant to my life. I thoroughly appreciated her taking away tests. Eased pressure off us and her. I learned so much about myself and Org Com.

Dr. J. is awesome but quirky so what?. Haters back off. Do the work, go to class, get an A. Move on with life. It's simple.

If you come in with a good attitude you will have a fun time. It's a lot of discussions and class participation but Jodi is a great professor. Class is genuinely interesting and the homework isn't too bad. I enjoyed class with her and my classmates and she made it fun! Just go to class and do your work.
