Dr. Sterle is by far my favorite professor! She responds quickly to her e-mails and is very approachable! Her tests come straight from her notes and are very clearly stated. She tells you basically whats going to be on the test. The online textbook is very helpful in studying! I love her!!!!
I loved this class! It's very similar to 101 but goes a little more in depth on everything. Professor Sterle is very passionate about the agriculture industry and she always brings up current, relevant topics. Great class!
She was very helpful and understanding of everything!! She kept class interesting and interactive even though there were many students.
Her lectures were really interesting and she was fun to listen to. Tests are pretty easy if you study the notes. Textbook is helpful for learning breeds but I didn't have one and passed. Pretty good at making complicated subjects understandable. Very fun professor!
She is a great professor. This was my only 8 a.m. class this semester and I still attended class every single day. Go to class and take notes and you will do good on exams.
Dr. Sterle is a lovely person, however some of the "facts" she presents are glaringly incorrect and it is clear that she does not have extensive experience with some of the species she is attempting to teach about. Not bad, but not good either. Seems unwilling to help students in situations such as an incorrect grade entered online.
Favorite teacher I have had at Iowa State so far! She does a really good job explaining things and actually cares that you understand it. I'm glad I have her next year for AnS 211.
Class was at 8 AM, but was worth it. She makes notes available before class with missing words, so you can just fill them in during class. Exams easy if you study. Optional final, if you have two or less absences!!! Very caring and helpful as a professor. Get the Webcom program, but don't buy the book. Never opened it all semester.
The only book for the class is an online book that is "recommended but not necessary". If you want to do well on the quizzes and the tests I would buy the book. Dr. Sterle makes sure that the students understand what she is talking about before moving on. If you go to class the final is optional and you will get a good grade.
LOVED this class. it is at 8am and she said it always will be, BUT if you miss less than 2 classes, you dont have to take the final! clicker quizzes almost every day - points add up!
Great teacher
Great teacher, it makes waking up at 8 AM reasonable. Tests are easy and class is fun.
Don't really need the textbook for 114. She made 114 and 211 really easy cause of the familiarity from orientation. Great personality!! Always willing to help. Definitely wanna take her 207 class!
Great teacher, enthusiastic about class and subjects, wants students to learn. Wish I would have attended class more because that's where most of your points come from. Exams are easy, it's a shame that she doesn't have more knowledge of subject areas (excluding repro) and doesn't seem to want to help students with grade correction issues
Very nice professor and clearly passionate about the subject matter. Unfortunately, I feel like it is less of a class and more of a recruitment against animal rights activists.
Makes the class enjoyable, go to class and the class is easy.
She made having an 8 A.M. enjoyable. She's enthusiastic and incorporates current events related to the material. Attending class is almost a must. There are clicker points before every lecture, and the notes are needed to complete the weekly quiz. Rewards good attendance by exempting from the final. I would highly recommend this class!
She is a great teacher! Keeps you interested at 8 am.
This class is very basic and right to the point. Exams are easy if you study correctly. Clicker questions everyday worth up to 8 points so it adds up quickly if you miss. If you're there everyday you will most likely pass because of participation. You get 2 points for correct ? and 1 point for just clicking if wrong. Also I never touched my book.
She was great. Yes, she expects you to be very responsible, but it's well worth it. Amazing professor, really great class for freshmen.
Dr. Sterle is one of the best professors I've ever had. Her lectures make getting to class at 8 am worth it. She's really good at explaining the material and making it interesting. It is extremely important to take good notes and go to class. Exams require studying, but are not awful and the final is optional if you only miss a couple classes.
Great Professor. Could work on being more respectful of different perspectives but overall, I learned a lot with her lectures.
Her tests were sort of difficult. I wasn't too big of a fan of the timing. The exams started at 7:15 in the morning. Make sure you read the online textbook!!! A lot of the questions on tests are off lectures but many many many are from the textbook.
Dr. Sterle was a great teacher who presented the material in an easy-to-understand format. Weekend quizzes over the material taught in class each week and Top Hat quizzes before each class. If you miss two or fewer class you are exempt from the final. Only frustrating thing was that she doesn't always respond to your emails.
Shes amazing! and is truly passionate about what she does. 114 is extremely easy if you have a background in livestock.
Dr. Sterle is a great animal science professor! Her lectures are entertaining and are essential to go to if you want a good grade in the class. The questions on the tests come right from her lectures and the weekend quizzes she assigns. Dr. Sterle is easy to contact and is very good at communicating what will be on tests at the end of sections.
Great teacher, great opinions on topic, and I really learned a lot from her. You treat her with respect and she will do the same for you and bend over backwards in order to help you if she can.
ANS114 with Sterle was definitely my favorite class. She does such a great job of explaining all the concepts and really makes the 8AM lecture worth going to. I would definitely recommend taking this class with her. Her final is not required if you have less than 2 absences. Her exams are lengthy, but if you attended lectures, they are easy.
Never know what your grade is half the time, very slow at giving things back to you. Don't ask her for help, she'll just be rude to you
Sets clear expectations of the class, amazing person!
I love Dr. Sterle! I am willingly taking 8AM classes with her. While attendance is mandatory (if you want to avoid final exams), it's well worth it. She often gives hints as to what will be on the exams, and genuinely loves teaching. She inspires me to be a powerful woman, as she is! I 100% recommend her.
You wont ever know what your grade is, awful teacher, boring class I wouldnt waste the time. Rude to her students
Wouldnt take this class again..
If you take the class, you won't ever know what your grade is. She doesn't put her students first. This class wasn't worth my time
Not worth the 8 am class, you can get all of her exams off quizlet though
I liked Jodi for Ans 114 but wasn't a fan on this class, mostly because I don't know my grade she has nothing graded and were almost done with the semester and because it is a very boring class and hard to pay attention
Honestly, This was the worst class I have taken throughout my 4 years of college. Very disappointing class, Jodi never had the grades in ever, I recommend not taking this class, you won't know your grade and her tests are hard
Amazing
Class was easy cause everything from the exam is online, but I wouldn't take this class again
Show up and it'll be impossible to fail.
Dr. Sterle was such a great professor. She really taught and explained all the material very well and didn't move on until the class understood the material. She really cares about the students succeeding.
Shes actually really great! Shes clear on what she wants from you throughout the semester and though can seem intimidating shes amazing at what she does.
Make sure you go to class even though its not mandatory. She makes you tweet each week about what you talked about. Mostly student driven discussions. She makes you read this horrible book that you will hate, but there is a reason for it.
I wouldnt take this class again
This class made me look forward to school in the morning. Sterle doesn't just read off lecture slides, she goes in depth on topics and really helps you understand all concepts. Amazing lecturer and very knowledgable. A quiz a week outside of class and tophat questions in class so do not skip. Study for test and listen in class and you'll be great.
Really makes the 8 am lecture worth while. Attendance counts for each class with top hat. Daily top hat quizzes. If you have 2 or fewer absences you can be exempt from the final. A lot of what she says in class is important to the exams. Even if it's not on the powerpoints and she says it out loud, it may be on the test. Overall, a great professor.
Sterle discriminate against all the country except the US. My friend switched his major after talking AN S 114 only because he is an international student. Attendance for the 8 am lecture is required. Silly extra credit.
Dr. Sterle makes me question if studying Animal Science is really worth it. She also isnt very accessible - in my personal opinion. I emailed her at the beginning of the semester and I have yet to get a response. The semester is literally over. If youre a masochist, then go ahead and take her class. If you HAVE to take this class, bless you.
Great professor that really cares about her students. I've met with her a few times to go over tests and for general An S major 4 yr. plan advice and she's been excellent with her feedback. Attendance is a must for TH points & if you don't want to take the final. Compared to An S 101, a lot less assignments & no lab so it is easier in that regard.
This class is required for my major. I took it my first semester and it was one of my favorite classes. I have a background in agriculture and livestock so I didn't think the class was terribly difficult. If you miss less then 2 classes you don't have to take the final. The top hat and weekend quizzes can impact your grade a lot so put in effort.
Good professor. I liked the videos and topics being talked about. Very chill with minimal effort outside the class besides the two projects and the weekly tweets. The two hours goes quicker when you participate.
I really liked this class how the professor taught it. Easy enough to get an A if you put in some effort. There are a couple projects/assignments spread out across the semester and three essay-format exams. Great for people into history and art. Dr. Sterle's lectures are pretty engaging so the 8am is not that bad.
If you miss 2 classes or less, you don't have to take the final, so that's a plus. ANS 114 is a pretty boring lecture-based class but the information is easy and Dr. Sterle is excited to teach it. TopHat quizzes every morning at 8AM when class starts
I really enjoyed discussing issues in Dr. Sterle's class. This was a fairly interesting class and pretty easy if you show up. After each lecture, you are required to tweet message points about things that were discussed in class. The class is long but goes much faster if you participate.
Dr. Sterle is an amazing lecturer. She tailors her course to the needs of the students and will explain the topic until you understand. She is very easily found outside of class if you need help and she loves to see all of her students outside of class. If I could, I would have her for all my classes because she is that amazing at teaching!!
Attendance is mandatory because you earn TopHat points. Be careful with the weekend quizzes because they do start to add up. Professor Sterle is one of the best at Iowa State, truly makes you feel like you're not just a number. If your a person who likes timeliness of grading you may be a little disappointed.
Good lecturer but HORRIBLE at responding quickly to students. Missed an exam because of internet issues and she did not respond to me for over 3 weeks. The only reason she did respond was when I emailed the head of CALS college for help. Get your work done on time because she is does not do favors for anyone.
Her exams are ridiculous. You have an hour to complete it. Notes are allowed however the exam is 99% short answer (meaning 5-7 sentences per questions) there are MAYBE 5 multiple choice. There are extensive matching questions (10 matching per 1 questions) and fill in the blank. She blames her students for not being able to finish the exams.
She is the head of the whole department and does not have her things together! She does not follow her own syllabus - so good luck. Also don't bother emailing for questions, she will not answer. Never has and never will. Her tests are ridiculous and she blames her students for doing bad, not the crazy long length and short time limit.
Picture this: you see that your 300-level reproduction class is taught by none other than Jodi Sterle. Well I hate to break it to you, we aren't in 114 anymore. I have never seen someone so disorganized in my life. It makes me really wonder how she became a professor in the first place. Good luck, kiddo. You'll need it.
I've never witnessed a professor more incompetent. Exams are 1 hour and about 40 questions of short answers (5-7 sentences long). Anytime students complain they are met with the remark "well this is a 300-level class so you should study harder" I've taken quite a few 300/400 level classes and have never witnessed such an unqualified teacher.
A month in Sterle scrapped the course a week w/o a course plan. We were blamed for poorly planned exams. Disorganization made things SO stressful for students. She blames students for her short-comings; accountability should be enforced for professors. The biggest issue though is her refusal to respond to emails, this isn't a new issue for her.
Aweful teacher. My tophat had issues, which is not my fault and she didn't care. Does NOT EVER check her email. I tried to get a hold of her for literally 2 months and she didn't respond. Doesn't care about anything except pork industry. Least flexible teacher I've ever had. Doesn't care about helping students learn, it's just a job to her.
She created her exams to be mostly fill in the blank, typing sentences, anything but multiple choice, and expects students to do it in a very short amount of time for the amount of typing required to answer. Books/notes were allowed, but it barely helped; missed at least 25 points on the final because i did not get that far. Scrapped by with a C+
Dr. Sterle was an informative professor and I enjoyed all the information she presented. However, she is incredibly busy and will not respond to emails quickly, if at all. She also doesn't grade things very quickly either and there can be mistakes in your grades, so be sure to set up one on one time to speak with her about them. Final was optional.
I really like Dr. Sterle and the material she teaches but she always goes overboard on her exams which ultimately brings down students' grades. I always felt like I was spending more time worrying about what small details were going to be on the test rather than actually learning. Her tests are hard, mostly fill in the blank and short answer.
Hardest class I took while at Iowa State. I was way more concerned with memorizing her lecture slides WORD FOR WORD rather than actually trying to read it and understand it. Her exams are awful; be prepared for short answer and fill in the blank questions with very little room for error (hence why I felt the need to memorize rather than understand)
This was the worst class of my whole life this professor seriously made me so mad I would study so much I NEVER SKIPPED CLASS and attended almost every si felt like I had to memorize the whole class and still could not pass her tests after studying so much. I went to talk to her and her response was maybe repro isnt for you.
Just avoid.
Enjoyed my time in this class when I took it spring 2021. The exams were very straightforward but you still need to study a great deal for it. Chapter quizzes were fair as were the TopHat questions. A lot of it is anatomy based so some form of memorization is a given. She is very accessible outside class to go over quizzes and exams effectively.
She's amazing.
One of the hardest classes I have taken. Exams are very conceptual, lots of short answer question. Lectures are good and she takes the time to explain things, it is just A LOT of concepts to learn and understand. Study a lot, go to SI, and go to class because there are a few TopHat questions at the beginning of each class.
In Animal Science 114, she often went off topic rather than staying on topic. If you attend all lectures (2 exempt) then you won't have to take the final exam which is nice. Just be prepared to study for the exams, not all topics covered in class are on the exam.
In class there is TopHat, so if you don't go you won't be able to get them correct. Her lecture slides are organized and helpful if you look at them as she lectures. There are two quizzes per chapter. Those do easily help with your grade. I did think she was a good lecturer, her speed was not too fast or slow.
Tests are fill in the blank and short answer. Shes proud of this being the hardest class in the animal science department. Its the hardest class because her lectures make no sense, and her slides make even less. So if you miss class once youre screwed on that material. She asks questions that barely relate to material learned, in short answer.
Dr. Sterle is amazing. She made sure to take her time teaching us and gaves is the chance for extra credit lectures since she did not make it through all the topics. Study your breeds and attend class!
Dr. Sterle does an amazing job teaching this class. She will explain the concepts very well and outlines what will be important on the test IF YOU LISTEN. Review your notes AND SLIDES regularly and you should be fine. Get help via a tutor, TA, or SI ASAP in the class if you are struggling. Concepts build off each other so have a good foundation.
You'll have a harder time in this class if you don't come from a farm background, that's just how animal science is at ISU. Pay attention in class and make sure to DO THE TOPHATS and the muddiest points (2-point lecture assignments)!! They add up!! Also, do NOT even try to cheat. Saw someone get caught and yikes. She's awful with emails. WORK HARD.
Not a good professor. I studied for hours upon hours for weeks straight to prepare for her exams and never received higher than a C-. The 2nd exam average was a 58 and she did not care at all. Seems to care more about failing students instead of passing them. Exams are over 5 chapters at a time all fill in the blank or short answer. Good luck.
Professor Sterle is passionate about animal science and has a large branch of connections if a student ever needed anything. She has large classes so there is not really an opportunity to have a personal connection. Her presentations are straightforward but exams are long. Do the TOPHAT and MUDDIEST POINTS, they count for many points!
As long as you show up to class and do the assignments this class is not that difficult. I do come from a farm background which helped a lot with this class but if you don't, and still put in the effort you should be fine. She gives a lot of easy points in muddiest points and top hats are graded. She truly does care for her students and will help.
She does not care how hard her class is. She seems to enjoy that students don't understand the material or do well on her exams. I study and go to every class, I even bought the book that isn't required, I still only got C's on every exam. I'm even going in to a repro field and I thought this class was extremely difficult and hard to understand.
Dr. Sterle is a great professor for this intro-level AnS class. She offers any opportunities to ask questions. Muddiest points and TopHat are very important. Many things on the tests are told verbally, so attendance is key. She tells you what will be on the test. If you need this class for your major, it is a major building block, so show up.
Teaches her classrooms like we are master, PhD students already and not just learning the subject. Says that she has open office hours, but yells at you when you go during her open office hours. The exams are all written out, with no word bank, so I hope you can spell well.
Few last minute extra credit opportunities outside of class so no extra credit if you have a job Passively mentions things once in class that are on the exam, there is no word bank or multiple choice. you have to know exactly what she wants you to say or no points No participation points for TopHat& very limited time
Mentions things briefly in class that are huge parts of the exams. Exams are all short answer with no word bank or anything. Tophat every day in class and its a huge part of your grade. Do not take this class if you do not need to. Will negatively affect your gpa and confidence...
The most difficult and stressful undergrad class for no reason, not good at making things cohesive and boring
211 is one of those classes that you have to take no matter what as an animal science major but with Dr. Sterle it wasn't terrible. We did have to do a group video assignment as our final which was a bit of a pain but as long as you show up and do the assignments it was fine. If you work with her, she'll work with you.
Dr. Sterle is the best! ANS 114 was a difficult class, but had such amazing content. Don't worry if you don't have a farm background for this class because I didn't and still did really well. Lectures are necessary in order to pass the class because of content and tophat points. Good notes are necessary because you have to study to pass the exams.
Dr. Sterle is an amazing professor. Attendance is mandatory, but she makes 7:45 am fun. She will help you understand the concept further if you do not. I love Dr. Sterle.
You need to be present in class to do well on exams because she doesn't read straight off of slides. She emphasizes things that aren't even on slides. If you pay attention, important details are easy to pick up. Exams have many short answer questions, but she almost always tells you what most of those questions will be. Overall, it was a fun class.
Attendance is mandatory!!! You get 2 unexcused absences, if you exceed that you have to take the final. There are top hats directly at the beginning of class which is at 745 am. With Dr. Sterle's teaching style you will need to show up to class or you will probably not do very well on the exams. She talks a lot more than what is on her slides.
Sterle is a passionate and caring teacher about repro. She has updated how she teaches the class, so exam scores are better than they used to be. Tophat, SI, and the textbook are great resources; you need to use them to pass the class. I hate Repro, but how she taught made me understand things more clearly.
Sterle really knows what she's talking about and it's pretty obvious during lectures. I think she explains things pretty well and uses analogies that are actually pretty helpful in learning the material. Expects a lot from students but offers a lot of points. The tests have no MC and are mainly short answers, listing, or fill-in-the-blanks; study!
Dr. Sterle is an awesome professor! Yes, repro is a tough subject, but if you put in the work you will be fine. Going to SI sessions were very helpful!
To be honest I dont understand the negative reviews she gets. She is a phenomenal professor who shows great passion in teaching. Lectures are clear and she does a good job explaining concepts and answering questions. If youy are not used to putting in work this class will be a wake up call but I honestly found it fairly easy (ANS 214 is harder).
Dr. Sterle is one of the greats at ISU. She is a tough professor, but it is because she loves what she teaches. Remember to do the tophat questions and take the quizzes, as those points add up a lot in the end! Her exams are hard, but if you pay attention in class and study to take the quizzes every week, they aren't as bad as they seem.
Dr. Sterle is my favorite prof I've ever had. She is so funny and for how hard the topic is she explains it very well and keeps class engaging and interesting. The exams are difficult as the questions are short answer/fill in the blank but she is a great prof and you can tell she loves what she does. Go to exam reviews as they are extremely helpful
Repro is a challenging subject, but utilizing resources like Tophat, SI sessions, and the textbook can really help. The tests are tough, so study hard. unstuck ai was a lifesaver for my prep too!
Slides are wordy, get ready to be confused
At first, the lectures may seem all over the place-- don't worry, it gets much better. She is an amazing lecturer and really cares for her students. We get exams back so we can learn from our mistakes. There are extra credit questions if you attend class, and a decent amount of homework points to offset the 3 exams. Tough, but I LOVED this class!
Sterle is very serious about the importance of lectures, and attending them will benefit you greatly in any of her courses. She uses TopHat for attendance, and almost all test material is given only in person. However, she offers loads of easy extra credit, and is a very enjoyable professor if you come to class.
Dr. Sterle is very passionate about what she teaches, if you go to class and listen, you will learn something. As someone who grew up on a farm background even I was learning stuff each lecture. high recommend!!
