Jody just came from the University of Pittsburgh and this was the first class he taught at SFU. Great prof, as he had lots of insightful comments and thoughts to share. He's an easygoing guy, and really allowed me to enjoy the class. I would gladly take another class with Jody!
Excellent professor, one of the best I've ever had! He is extremely excited about the course content and sets up workshops outside the lecture and puts in online for everyone to listen. This was very helpful and he truly wants his students to learn.
He is extremely nice. Not hard, very open to ideas and opinions for the course. But he talks really fast during lecture and hard to take notes down.
Wonderful professor, his stories and jokes were funny/cool!
Take a class with this guy if you can. He is very interested in what he teaches, is an excellent teacher and wants to help you succeed.
This prof is awesome. I was hoping to take a few more classes with him at SFU... but what's this I see? - SFU hasn't got him back for the upcoming semester. I hope that this is some seasonal mistake on SFU's part.
My favorite communications prof yet. Jody was extremely helpful, had very interesting lectures and it was very apparent that he cared about what he was teaching, and cared about our succcess in his class. The final was great and worked to the students advantage.
really coll professor, always helps with material, open to changes in course context. lectures are interesting, Great Teacher
very good professor. very clear lectures, always helped during office hours, was open to new ideas. he cares about students. lectures are interesting, u will never get bored.but textbook was quite confusing. i will be glad to take his course again, but he gone from sfu
Jody is a fantastic prof and has made CMNS 220 my favorite class yet. He speaks very clearly and his presentation slides are always helpful and the tv show examples he uses are very interesting. Papers and midterms are demanding but can be done easily if you give enough time. I am definitely looking for more classes that Jody teaches.
I have taken two of Jody's classes. Hands down the best prof I've ever had. He was so interested in the course content, which made learning the material much more enjoyable. Humorous and personable. Always up for discussion and available for help. Final exam is open book/open laptop. It's clear he wants you to succeed!
Likes to talk. I really enjoyed the subject matter as well as the lecture and discussions in tutorials. He was very helpful and interesting. I would take him again. He cares about students and their learning experience.
I took CMNS223W and CMNS220 this semester with Jody. He's an awesome prof, and his TA's this semester were pretty awesome as well. Assignments are fairly easy if you do the readings and the exam is open book! I had a great semester learning from Jody!
Easy class, but pretty boring. I felt Jody was unorganized and rambled on a lot. But he's a funny guy.
I have taken two courses with Jody - Cmns 220 and 223. He is an awesome professor who is incredibly funny and enjoyable to listen to. His lectures are always fun because the course material is interesting. Exams are a breeze.
Baker was the best prof I had at SFU, he truly cares about the student and helps the student every step of the way. He is responsible and helpful beyond any other prof I have ever had. I strongly recommend his classes to anyone at SFU.
I took a course a few years ago and liked his class a lot. really fun!
love him!!! Jody is one of the best prof ive ever encountered. really passionate, and funny. wish there's more profs like him :)
Jody is an amusing lecturer. He selects interesting, relevant media clips to enhance his lectures. He has tons of sources online. Probably don't need to go to class, but you'll want to because he is so engaging.Wish he taught upper divisions. Some say he is at times all-over-the-place with explanation of materials. I didn't find that to be true.
Professor Baker is my all-time favourite prof. He is incredibly entertaining and funny, while also engaging the course concepts. One-on-one he is very helpful with developing one's ideas. The syllabus is very interesting and a joy to learn about.
He was amazing. Such an understanding person. He accommodated to the problems that I was having and the TA was great. Loved the class. Definitely recommend it.
loved his class! funny prof who keeps his lectures interesting. half of lecture is of him showing examples and going over each one in detail so that was very helpful
Very nice guy who is very interested in the subject. Has slides that he breezes through during lecture but puts them and voice recordings online. 3 small essays and one final all with peer reviews first. Open book, laptop, room final exam. Make sure you do the readings as they are greatly linked. Puts on a very enjoyable lecture. Would take again.
Friendly knowledgeable teacher, but bad class for students who aren't auditory learners. He talks very quickly and doesn't use any slides so lectures can be very hard to follow.
Very funny guy, interesting lectures and very good examples given to clarify ideas.
Amazing teacher, shows a ton of videos like the daily show, bachelor, and americas next top model. Gets you into the lecture. Doesn't believe in tests. Really great guy
Just a Great Prof. I talked to him twice. When I walked in, I had no idea how to write the paper. He was patient and he analyzed the material (you gotta have something first though) with (for) you. You can take all the time you need, hes happy that you come to him. He is extremely helpful. Final can be tough for some (3 short essay in 2 hours).
He is really nice! Interesting lecture with a set of videos... However, if you dont grow up in the North American countries with watching the regular shows like Cops, Touched by a Angel, etc. you may find it is a little hard to understand the lecture content.
Jody is the greatest prof I have ever had at SFU hands down. Can't say enough about him. He loves what he teaches and his amazing character shows in his teaching. Hilarious guy. 1on1 help is unbelievable, allows rewrites on papers and basically helps you write them. Open book exam, no midterm. Genuinely cares about helping you do the best you can.
he tries to be funny every time but the lecture material itself was quite confusing and you have to write down the notes every lecture cuz if you don't you won't really understand what the course is about.
No professor in the Communications or Business faculty can teach you about advertising better than Jody Baker.
Always available for help outside of class, gives great one on one feedback. Keeps lectures interesting, even when material can be dry. Would take any one of his classes just to have him as a prof again.
Absolutely fantastic prof, he was funny, entertaining, informative, helpful and passionate. The assignments were hard, lots of writing but the material was so interesting and I enjoyed coming to class every week. One of my best prof experiences at SFU.
Excellent prof. Jody is passionate, hilarious, inspirational. His lectures are anything but boring, and his grading criteria is crystal clear, he talks about how to write the paper in lecture. If you talk to him about your topic, he'll personally recommend a list of references for you. Great prof, entertaining, caring, interesting, would take again
Jody is a great teacher. He's clearly passionate about what he's teaching, which is fantastic. His assignment guidelines are really clear (sometimes he'll even tell you the exact reading he wants you to refer to). Only negative is that sometimes the class can shift from lecture to comedy routine, so be patient. Bonus: all readings are online.
Jody Baker is one of the most interesting professors at SFU and I had so much fun taking this class. The lectures offer some interesting perspective on analyzing TV. Although there are two papers, they're manageable - however, grading will depend on your TA. Jody has a stress-free exam policy, which is always a plus.
Best courseprof so far
Jody is a very helpful professor, at some point he's even more helpful than he's TA. Make sure you do all the reading, it's very important if you want to pass this class. The class was interesting, DO NOT miss the lecture or you'll fail for sure
Jody is an awesome guy ! He's the best cmns prof that I have ever seen. His teaching methods are super clear. He goes so specific to make sure everyone in the class understands the lecture. Do not hesitate to ask any question that you don't understand. He likes to make everything clear.
He's very friendly. Everyone loves him. His lectures were insightful as he talked a lot about Western TV shows, etc. However, he doesn't give out presentation slides (he doesn't even use slides). He only talks in class.
Great prof!
Jody Baker is hilarious and obviously very into what he teaches. If you're a Communications student, or are thinking of pursuing Communications, I highly recommend him. He also provides his reading for the class so you don't have to worry about textbooks!
It's alright, nothing amazing. A lot of people like him because he is relatable, but all around average teacher
He's super kind. If you drop him an email he will help clarify assignments for you and eve give you an extension if you're having trouble. But I honestly don't get what the hype over him is about. He's funny but he doesn't get to the point in class which can get frustrating. Tends to go off on a tangent talking about his own life.
Jody is an awesome prof! Hes clear, interesting and funny. Watched a lot of hilarious ads in class. No midterms and no textbook! Grading is fair and clear. I have never enjoyed a communications class as much as I have enjoyed this one. Would definitely take a class with him again
TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT! Always kind to students, always willing to help.
Jody is an amazing prof. I took this class specifically because I had heard he made things really interesting and he did not disappoint. All of the readings were online and there was no need to buy the textbook. The majority of the marking was done by the TA.
Jody is my favorite prof. This was my 3rd class with him. 323 was honestly the best class, there are basically two assignments - a paper and a commercial you have to make and your whole grade is based on the precess and drafts you make throughout the year then the final product. Plus participation! But the lectures were really long. Great class tho
Really don't understand what all the fuss is about surrounding this course. Was just a normal cmns class and tbh Jody wasn't all that great in my eyes. Was just a normal course.
One of the best. BELIEVE the hype. I've taken courses with a LOT of CMNS professors and man, I have never, ever found anyone who is as down to earth or smart as this one here. Doesn't teach you WHAT to think, just teaches you how. Super nice. I needed an extension due to medical reasons and I cannot tell you how supportive he was. Truly a gem.
Easy class but I wish his lectures were most structured and interesting. All he did is repeat things from 223, have random rants and rambles. Structure of the course is good, lecture was pointless and boring.
Don't take this class with Jody. His lectures drag on, he jumps all over the place with topics. DOES NOT give you clear criteria on assignments... You can end up getting a bad mark just because he doesn't make a clear criteria of what you need to do.
While he doesn't use slides (I really love slides...) and it's an adjustment at first if you can figure out a way to take notes lectures are fine. Final is fair and no surprises-- TA sent out a 'what to focus on' which was pretty much the final. Pay attention in class/write down what he is saying and you're good.
Professor Jody Baker is very informed and brilliant about the subject he is teaching. He is also funny and engaging. However, the problem with his lecturing is that he complains a lot about his personal life a lot and needs to learn to keep those information private.
I found his lectures extremely confusing. He seems to go off on many tangents that often seem irrelevant to the course. Speaks very fast and often hard to understand. I left lectures feeling more confused than informed. Lecture slides were unclear. Overall, confused me I found that I had to do most of my learning from reading textbook.
Jody is one of the best CMNS profs out there. He's extremely personable, engaging, and funny, and can make what seems like boring material very interesting. He sometimes goes off on tangents about his personal life but it doesn't really detract much from his lectures. My only complaint is that he doesn't normally have lecture slides.
Jody is a great prof. No midterm or final in this class, just tutorial participation, group video project, and term paper (in two drafts). The lack of exams really took the pressure off and allowed me to enjoy exploring course content. Jody is awesome and really cares about the topics and his students. Would take a class with him again!
Jody is an interesting guy who is clearly very passionate about what he teaches and enjoys teaching. He can be a bit rambly and his lectures are confuing to follow because he goes on a lot of tangents, but overall such a great guy. No midterm/final!
Jody's amazing and he really cares about what he teaches and who he teaches! It was his first time teaching 130 so it got a little confusing, but he's really approachable and encourages students to come in for office hours. He was super flexible and empathetic with deadlines and the midterm/final which were both online too. 100% recommend!
I really enjoyed Jody as a lecturer, although sometimes he speeds through the material a little too quickly. Otherwise, his lectures are fun, funny, and engaging. I also didn't find the workload to be too strenuous. Awesome class!
Jody is very good teacher and so is the TA!! His instructions about about to do are very clear and the lecture slides are easy to understand. Although the course requires a lot of readings and writings, it provides insights into thinking. Overall satisfaction:90%. Will take with him again.
Had Jody for CMNS 223W intersession Summer 2017. Would recommend this course if you are considering intersession. Pace was not too quick however readings will catch up if you leave them. Readings are necessary to do well on the papers and to have a better understanding of course concepts as Jody can sometimes be all over the place
Jody always replies to my emails usually only within one day. He gives lots of detailed feedbacks, I would email Jody instead of the TAs. I didn't miss a single one of his lectures! Best communications prof at sfu.
Jody is very eccentric and very engaged with the theory of the course, which makes it fun to attend lecture. He provided the readings online, most of which were interesting and helpful. If you pay attention and understand the theory, the assignments aren't hard at all. Would take again.
This was my second class with Jody, and I couldn't have enjoyed either class more. He's a thorough and enjoyable lecturer who really cares about his students understanding the material and succeeding with their work. He does go through material very quickly, but posts his slides on canvas, so you can go back if you miss anything. Jody is the best
I am a 4th year student and I can confidently say Jody is the best professor I have had yet. Most people are right when they say professors don't care about you; but Jody truly wants you to succeed and will do anything in power to cultivate that. He's also hilarious so you won't find yourself bored to tears.
The kind of professor that makes university seem useless. Extremely repetitive, fails to engage students, talks off topic regularly. Don't expect to receive grades/feedback on your work for a very long time. Spends half the class saying he doesn't like to talk about Trump and spends the other half talking about Trump. Bubbly and kind of annoying.
I took this class due to all the raves for the professor and ended up extremely disappointed. His long tangents, constant stumbling and referring to his notes, and over-arching sense that he himself was unprepared for class really hit home. I would not recommend this prof to anyone. I ended up learning much more in tutorial then through him.
There was so much hype around Jody but honestly he SUCKS. Lectures were so pointless, always rambled about BS. Go to tutorials if you want to learn something. Do not get me started on the assignments.. we had to present a creative project to him that he told us was going to be chill BUT he decided to mark us as if we were actual advertisers. JUDGY.
I entered the class with a lot of surrounding hype about Jody through friends and online sources. To be honest, he's alright. He rambles a lot and has a tough time explaining the fundaments of theories (doesn't make things clear). I appreciate his efforts, but his organization skills are kinda subpar and the ads felt a bit tacky.
midterm and finals were open book, they were fairly easy IF YOU DID THE READINGS/ATTENDED CLASS (they consisted of short answer and essay questions). jodys funny, and his lectures weren't boring. I'd recommend him, sure
Amazing lectures, but talks really fast.
jody gets side tracked a lot of the time, however he is a really nice prof and really cares for communications. tutorials were key to understanding the material. if you skip a class or don't do the reading, you might have trouble understanding the material.
I took Jody for CMNS 220 and 323, and he was great in both classes. Lectures can be a bit sidetracked, but I find it better than 3 hours of boring and dense talking. I felt behind in 323 as I didn't take 223 and Jody was amazingly helpful, his door is literally always open and he will go above and beyond to help you with your papers/assignments.
One of the best profs in the faculty of cmns at SFU! His classes, both 223 and 323 go hand-in-hand. The critical thinking and writing skills that are encouraged and taught go a long way when entering higher upper division courses. Both Prof and his TA's work well together. Plus Jody is full of character, honest, and lectures are very well prepared.
Jody is an awesome professor!!! He's hilarious, lectures are always organized and he even provides lecture videos online. He's very engaging and always available for feedback in office hours.
One of the best teachers I had. Super funny, super articulate, makes everything really easy to understand
Jody is very articulate, enthusiastic and knows what he is talking about. He keeps the lectures interesting and isn't boring at all.
Really great teacher.
This class was a bit tough as you have to get creative for the group project. But Jody is, as always, accessible in his office and is willing to help anytime. Paper was standard 10-12 pages and it's broken down into sections with different due dates, so that really helped. Pretty solid class but lectures could be a tad boring, just do the readings
All I have to say is that I wish he taught more classes! Very good prof. Explains everything you'd ever need to know and he's hilarious
Great enthusiasm, he shows a lot of interest in the courses he teaches. All his assignments are clear and he lays out what he expects from everyone one day one. Would definitely take more courses with him.
Jody is really good at explaining concepts. He is also the funniest man on the planet
Jody keeps the lectures interesting and funalthough he does get off topic at times. He cares about the students and will help students to do their best in his course.
Helpful and accessible during office hours, gives great advice! There aren't slides for every lecture like most other classes have; it's a diff style but doesn't make the class harder just forces you to pay attention to what he's actually saying. Always brings in loads of examples and relevant content. Excited to take more classes with him.
There's not much to be said about Jody that hasn't been said already. If you get the chance to take a class with him, do it. He's so passionate about his topic and 323W is relatively straightforward in terms of assignments- one term paper and one group video project. No final. Lectures aren't mandatory either, but go to them! They're interesting.
I've taken 3 classes with jody (cmns 220, 223, 130), and I think most of his classes are the same in terms of grading. Basically, all papers/assignments of any sort have one goal: demonstrate you've done the readings. Quote-drop like crazy in your essays, have a decent thesis, and you're golden. His finals always seem to be take-home/online exams,
Great lecturer with lots of interesting examples which demonstrates his passion for the course concepts. Off topic, but he's like a Stanley Tucci + Steve Carell hybrid.
Ive taken 2 classes with Jody and he is great ! Cares a lot about his students and always offers help and guidance. His classes are not hard as long as you read and pay attention to what he says in lecture. If you listen to what he says and write everything down you will be fine on any of his assignments .
Great lecturer, I never skipped a class because I actually really looked forward to them! He's funny, interesting and the main ideas for the course are very clear. If you show that you've done the readings, you'll do great! Definitely hope to take another course with him again.
Ask pretty much any communications student and they will say the same thing: "Take a class with Jody". He's got lots of energy, is pretty funny, and the lectures for CMNS 220 were honestly pretty entertaining. He genuinely seems like he wants his students to succeed in his courses, and is willing to reward you if you do well.
Jody and the TA's are very good at helping students succeed. Papers have deadlines but if they need to be extended/handed in late no marks will be taken off. There is some presentations in tutorials but they are not hard and quite fun. This class is very paper heavy but not hard to do well in.
One of the good ones. You can truly tell that he loves teaching the course and is good at what he does. He puts a lot of effort into his teaching material so all students can understand properly. Through his teaching methods and overall performance, he was passionate, encouraging, and aside from his rant stories, he was straight to the point.
You definitely don't need to attend CMNS323W with him to pass, but I highly recommend attending because his lectures are so interesting! You don't even need to take notes, just sit back and listen. You won't regret it. The term paper is time-consuming, but he gives lots of advice and ideas to get you started. Take a class with him at some point!!!
In first year I thought jody was amazing. By 3rd year i realised he's not that great. He's a good speaker, but tbh he's just readingt he slides Hes not a bad teacher i like him but in 3rd year but I never went to class (4 a reason). He's usually a fair marker but I've had a few weird curveballs where my grade dropped dramatically for weird things
Great prof who actually cares about his students. 10/10
Jody is an excellent lecturer, really passionate and great at getting students to think critically. Although you don't need to attend lectures, I really enjoyed them and I found his classes really interesting and thought provoking. He and the TAs I had were very understanding and super helpful when it came to assignments.
Jody is one of my most memorable profs at SFU. Lectures are so clear and concise.
