he's new this year, he confuses himself sometimes in lecture. he will help outside of class if you need it. he has an attendance policy. but if you go to class you'll ace the test. he gives review sheets and puts those questions on his short answer tests
He is a really good teacher. He will make you look at govt. in a different light. He focuses not only the facts, but, the heart of our country...blahblahblah. I highly recommend this teacher. He WANTS everyone to make an A.
He is an awesome teacher. I could never fall asleep in his class. He loves his job and it shows. He is always upbeat. If you come to class and do the review sheets you will have no problems.
the little pols 1010 students have no clue, he's hard, hard, hard and causes us all to suffer everyday.
Baumgartner has interesting lectures and typically will help outside class. He also seems to really want his students to have a better understanding of government by the end of the semester.
His class is hard and he grades hard. He always complains about his other classes to us. His final was really out there! He doesn't give us study guides and doesn't tell us what's on the exams. Those lower level classes are lucky!
What a jerk. He alwasy goes off topic and none of his tests are from the notes so you might as well just read the book and you'll be better off. Awdul teacher
Very unclear, and you'd better double check his math or he'll low ball you!
Dr. B was the greatest professor I have ever had. The people that do not like him do so because they wanted some extra points and didn’t get, nor deserved. I would advise every one to take his class. I am very thankful to have taken him, he is the best
Dr. B's a great teacher & mentor. Study Guides before the tests & a couple papers. He makes his class interesting & encourages class discussion! He's the best teacher i've had here at ECU! He's an asset to the school!
Dr.B is a cool teacher! The tests are somewhat hard because there is not enough time to completely finish test. Likes discussion. attendence is important. test are short answers. listen to what he says, that will help!
Dr. Baumgartner is absolutly one of the best teachers i have ever had in my life. So long as you stay interested (which is not that hard ) and as long as you try, you're gonna do well. His class takes effort, but it's worth it. Great mentor.
If you don't want to work, he's not the professor for you. However, for those who don't mind being challenged once in a while, he's the man. Seems intimidating the first day, but he loosens up as the semester moves forward.
He will definately give you the benfit of the doubt if you work hard and go to class. You MUST go to class!!!
He gave me the wrong grade and I showed him the math and he still wouldn't change it. I had to take it to his boss to get it changed. Not a bad teacher but treated me like I was in kindergarden.
avoid at all cost!!!!!
Very unclear, did not enjoy his class at all. Not a fair grader, even though I did well. I would avoid his class at all costs. Just don't ever take this man and shall be OK.
Too smart to be teaching at this school or just has a problem adressing students, eye to eye. Gives the final from hell and you sure wont have a good time doing that paper.
Dont take him. Hes a nice man very understanding but he will bump up your grades in the end.

He really likes politics, which makes the class more exciting. It is hard to get an 'A', but if you attend class, study notes, and throw some specifics in from the books you will do fine. Very helpful and understanding.
Great teacher, talk to him and stand out in the class, oh, and if you ask him, he;ll help and remember you care and will give you the benefit of the doubt at grading time.
He is the worst professor I have ever had!! The paper is so ridiculous & he hardly prepares you for it. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
He is a interesting guy ... a little hard to figure out at first. He has somewhat of a unique personality and is pretty sarcastic, but in a fun way. He's a straight shooter.
This course goes from confusing to impossible, and not just for the people that never show up. He says about the gigantic paper due at the end of the semester that it will "beging to make sense soon". 35% of your grade paper and he will give you a 40 on it, although you do it the way he tells you to
Dr. Baumgartner is a pretty cool guy. He will NOT tell you exactly what's going to be on the exam but if you ask him the right questions he will give you hints. Go to his exam reviews! He will give you sweet exam hints. Also, you will probably fail his first test. His 3rd test is the hardest.
RUN AWAY. He's a visiting professor, wait for him to leave until you take 3031 or you fail it
Dr. B is a pretty cool guy and mas some very interesting lectures. However, it stops there. The tests are hard and impossible to pass and the paper is almost pointless. If you have a photographic memory then you got a good shot at an A or B otherwise, set yourself up for a C. He is a nice guy though
His POLS 3031 class is wretched. That paper does not make sense during any part of the semester and his teaching methods set you up to make mistakes. His attempts at being a control-freak render him the most disorganized, forgetful instructor imaginable. This does not make a good elective at all.
Had him for 2010, wasn't too fond of him. Have him again now for 2000... he's not so bad now. He knows what he's talking about, that's for sure. A little sarcastic and spastic, but his quirks are funny after you get used to them. He likes having students in his class that have had classes with him before. You will learn a lot with him!
He is easier for POLS 2000 than he is for 3031 but I still think his teaching methods, test methods, and attitude are lousy. It is a shame because he teaches two courses I'm required to take and all the other professors I have had for POLS have been great.
The cute, little, flippant remarks get old after about the 7000th instance. His grading system leaves something to be desired as well. Why does he have to be the only prof. that teaches POLS 2000 and 3031? He's lousy at both of them and he's the worst prof. I've dealt with in the POLS dept. How many of these election researchers do we need anyway?
Course is challenging, but not hard. Was an easy A since I already knew microsoft. Showed us some neat tricks. Some of his requirements are a pain, maybe b/c his other students still have high school attatudes.

Really nice guy, knows his stuff. His tests are difficult, but not impossible. He has a tendency to go off on tangents, but you really learn a lot from his class. I would take him again given the chance. Give him a shot- he's not as bad as SOME people on here say!
Baumgartner is WONDERFUL. His lectures are easy to follow, he's entertaining, he's got a golden personality and actually listens to his students. You can be successful on his tests if you study ahead of time.
He is a very confident professor. He knows what he is taking about. You either love him or hate him. I loved him, the class was easy, you don't have to read the books, just study his lecture notes. Good class!
worst teacher I have ever taken at ECU. Has the students teach the class as he interupts them the entire time, very annoying. If you are looking to enjoy a nice southern university experience, he is not the teacher to take.
Do not take him! He is the worst teacher in the POLS dept
Good professor; very knowledgable; very friendly outside of class too. Buying the textbooks is a good idea, but most test material comes from his notes. If you're not a POLS major and are easily offended, don't take him. He has an annoying habit of saying things like "we as POLS majors know...."
I've had him for 3 different classes, and he just got better and easier to understand each time. Granted, he's a little odd, but he really knows his stuff. If you want an easy class, he's not the one to take. But if you want to learn... go straight to Dr. B! He's easy to talk to out of class, and really cares about the people he teaches.
Very intellegent
Dr. Baumgartner is a very intelligent man. He LOVES political science, and he wants his students to love it, as well. He is very helpful and very funny. Somewhat conservative, but that's not really an issue. Tests are easy if study. I recommend taking him!
Great teacher!! TAKE HIM!!! Knows his stuff!!
Dr. Baumgartner is fantastic. He does have this habit of interjecting when people are talking, but his style of teaching keeps you interested. Take notes and listen to all of the lectures and you will do well in his class. He's great!
Great prof. I recommend taking any of his classes. He was very nice and helpful and kept class funny and interesting. I always looked forward to his class.
love his class! amazing teacher
EASY... if you do not pass his class your an idiot. he is easy, funny, and very nice. he does take attendance every day though so make sure you go. Awesome class. I loved taking it. Also he loves giving points away. we got extra credit for predicting the outcome of the election. Loved this class. i recommend you take his class!!!
Dr. Baumgartner is tough but if you are willing to put work into it, you will do just fine in the class. Dr. B makes it clear that this is university level work and he expects that from you, but he is very reasonable and easy to work with. Overall great professor
Love this guy! Go to class, pay attention, take notes, and the semester will be great. Keeps lectures interesting everyday!
Pretty awesome teacher, loves politics and talking about it. Easy class, very helpful, and fun to listen to. Take his class with Dr. Morris, you learn a lot more when they're together.
Baumgartner has made me consider a career in elections and campaigns. He has an awesome sense of humor and cracks jokes on a lot of people...even himself. Take him, he's great!
Baumgartner and Morris taught my class together and made it more interesting. Baumgartner is the conservative and Morris is the liberal, and it is hilarious to watch them argue about politics.
Dr. B is not easy! Somewhat odd, but knows what he's talking about. Has several eccentricities and can certainly ramble but a qualified professor nonetheless. Comparative Politics is writing intensive so thereby predisposed to suck, but the class was bearable.
Dr. Baumgartner is a GREAT professor. The class is demanding and is writing intensive, but he makes the class enjoyable & explains the material well. He's incredibly knowledgeable & qualified, so just a great professor to learn from. Go to class, take good notes, & read the textbook. Use the quizzes on Monday's as grades booster too; easy A's.
By far the worst professor I have ever known. He teaches a political humor class and he is as charming as Hitler. I feel sorry for anyone who has to put up with this guy longer than a semester. He has a website he made telling everyone how great he is. It is pathetic. Seems like a guy that got beat up a lot in High School.
Baumgartner is a pretty awesome professor. Will give credit for a missed question on quizzes if you can justify why you thought the answer was different. The textbook he used was pretty hard, but he gives clear lectures.
Political Humor is a hard class believe it or not. Paper is ridiculous. Don't take that class unless you know everything about everything politics becuase you won't get the humor
I had him for political science with morris too. The tests are straight off the quizzes. The online quizzes are easy if you figure them out;). It's like civics class in high school. I have to admit I somewhat enjoyed the class because him and morris just argued the whole time. Attendance isn't madatory but is a big extra credit boost for your grade
he was the worst i ever had he really don't care if you get it or not i have never had a professor that didn't care if you were sick he was just plain out mean to me so glad that after i pass him this semester i won't have to worry about him again
I had Baumgardner when he was teaching with Dr. Morris, and they were hilarious! It was just like high school civics class, and little work is needed. Make sure to do the online quizzes because the exam questions come from them. Attendance is not mandatory, but it does help to raise your final grade. I would recommend him to anyone!
He's a good teacher. Him & Morris are a good team. Basically, go to class & you'll have some laughs when they do their banter. Then, go home and read the book some. Remember the online quizzes!
Dr. Baumgartner's humor and politics class is deceptively hard and most definitely not an easy A. He's very sarcastic, and not very helpful even when you go to his office hours. I loved the subject matter of the class, I just wish I could've taken it with a different teacher.
He is a brillant man, but unfortunately not a fantastic professor. He's extremely well versed in many things, but his personal skills are less than capable. Sarcastic and at points, uncaring. Perhaps he doesn't care, it wouldn't surprise me a bit. Those who need help in these subjects are advised to seek other professors. Only for the experts.
Took him a year ago. Hacking is a crime but that does not stop meanies.
Dr. Baumgartner is hilarious! I had him & Dr. Morris for POLS 1010. They go back and for the entire class. It's really entertaining. You gain a broader view of American politics. Attendance is mandatory, but it's so funny you'll want to go. If you need a Social Science class, take this one! :) Love it!
Thinks that his jokes are funny and drags class on longer than it needs and his exams are a joke.
He's actually a good teacher. He can be funnny at times as well. His class was easier than I expected it to be. He does give online assignments but they aren't hard. It comes straight from the textbook. His tests are really easy. If you take good notes and pay attention in class, you will do just fine. I definitely recommend him.
Great professor love his class really interesting and relatively easy.
Great professor. Take good notes because he gives you all the information you need for tests. Very fun and interesting.
Baumgartner is definitely not an easy A, and in his Comparative Politics course I really had to work for the B+ that I got. 2 essays account for a good deal of your credit, but he allows you to turn in a proof and edits it before your final copy is turned in. Attendance isn't mandatory, but going to class will definitely help you get that A
Dr. B is one of my favorite professors at ECU. He's knowledgable without being condescending and is truly interested in helping his students become better writers. Takes the time to meet with students weekly and gives extensive commentary. Don't take this class if you don't want to put in the time to write (many) papers and you must go to class.
Baumgartner is sarcastic towards students and there is no need for that.. He is knowledgeable to a degree on the subject.
DONT TAKE THE COMBINED TWO PROFESSOR CLASS BEWARE!!!!!! AND GET READY FOR BUSY WORK ON POLISCILAB
Dr. B is an okay professor. He is a very tough grader, and expects a lot out of his students. You can tell he is also very conservative.
I took this class with the combined professors (Baumgartner and Morris) it was interesting sometimes but mostly boring. They argue back and forth and waste time so they end up not getting through all the material that's on the test and its up to you to figure it out. Tons of busy work. Definitely take another class if you can.
His lectures are extremely well organized in all of his classes. He's the bomb.
Lectures are really well organized. If you just take notes in class it doesn't take much to study and ace his exams.
I've taken Dr. B for multiple classes and always enjoy him. He is knowledgable, funny, and always available to help students who are willing to put in the work. He is a tough grader and his classes aren't a cakewalk-but this is college you're supposed to have to try. Highly recommend him!
I am so glad I took this class. I have never enjoyed a class as much as I enjoyed this one - he is a GREAT professor, I learned so much in this class. I would definitely recommend taking any course he teaches.
I took Dr. Baumgartner along with Morris for POLI1010. I loved Dr. Baumgartner. He is a very firm believer of his opinions, but stays objective towards others. His tests are really hard, but he is super nice. He makes the class more tolerable.
Go to class and take the pop quizzes, class is very boring but missing the quizzes can be a let down about your grade and don't forget the mind tap. Tests aren't that hard, are very tedious class in general however.
Dr. Baumgartner always assigns a textbook that he wrote and it's mandatory.... and all his books are terrible, hard to read, and have no real academic substance to them. He has a lot of work in his classes so if you do them all well youre good to go but if you screw anything up in your assignment he's really tough. Pop quizzes are a thing too..
I took this class to learn how to better my writing but I ended up even more confused. There are times where it seems as if he himself gets confused by the writing criteria. Make sure you load up your printing balance or buy a printer, you'll have a paper due almost every class.
I would highly suggest taking this professor, he makes the class entertaining and easy to get a good grade. You may have to study a little bit but if you pay attention and read the chapters you'll do fine.
Hes an amazing professor. If you want to improve your writing, especially for POLS, take him. Hes the best and wants you to succeed. He is particular about formatting, length, papers etc but hes exceptionally clear on instructions for each of those. My favorite professor in pols department
I dont know why people say attendance is not mandatory. He gives a quiz every class (just about) he never tells you when the are so just go to class. It was very entertaining. If you pay attention then youll do great. As for the person who said he was rude, he definitely is not. He has a sense of humor. Take a joke yall.
Amazing! If I could give 6/5 I would! A lecture-based class can easily be boring, but the way that the professors taught the class made it my absolute favorite of the semester. I am literally the most sensitive person ever, and I did not find this professor rude or offensive in any way. If you can't handle other's opinions, stay out of politics.
Hes awesome. I took the National government class with him and professor Morris. They made the class fairly interesting and actually made me want to come. If you miss class, theres a chance you miss a quiz. Tests are not too bad as long as you study your notes and especially the book.
Tough grader, you really have to try in his class. He doesn't take attendance BUT there is something due almost every class (in person, he doesn't use Blackboard) so you have to show up to turn it in. If you're late to class, he will count your assignment as late and take points off. He makes you work for a good grade.
a ton of quizzes and you have to buy a subscription to a discussion board and do them weekly and if you miss a couple you are screwed. The test aren't bad but the quizzes are super short and if you don't do well on all of them you are also screwed
Dr. Baumgartner is a great teacher. POLS 2090 was one of the most difficult classes I've taken, but I've in turn become a better writer. He is willing to help you with anything as long as you ask. A bit intimidating, but only because he knows what he is talking about. Take this class it will benefit you in the long run.
Dr. Baumgartner is a fantastic teacher. He knows the field of political science very well, and he wants his students to excel. I took his Humor and American Political Science course during a shortened summer session. My only complaint is the course was too short, but that is not related to him but the course schedule itself.
Condescending, I went to his office to get help with something and the whole time I was talking he was just looking about me with this half smiling/confused, squinty eye face like he was on some prank show something because Every-time I would say something and his facial expression looked like he was holding back a laugh. Waste of my time tbh
Dr. Baumgartner was an amazing professor. I took his politics in humor class in the summer and it was awesome. He only gives pop quizzes if half the class doesnt show and you basically have to try hard to fail them. In regard to people saying he is condescending, he doesnt like stupid questions that hes already explained in class multiple times.
Dr. Baumgartner is a very smart guy and very funny, which makes listening to lectures and going to class really enjoyable. I recommend this class to anyone looking to get an elective credit out of the way and to those who want to analyze/learn more about upcoming elections.
Baumgartner was the worst professor in my 4 years at ECU. He has a conservative bias and can be arrogant at times. He teaches to write in a robotic style and to essentially repeat yourself. As a straight A student he is the only professor to ever give me a C. I have a lot of respect for all my Poly Sci professors but Baumgartner is not one of them.
The only thing I didn't like about this class was although attendance wasn't mandatory, the only way you can get the notes are in class. There are certain pop quizzes throughout the semester (for extra credit) that cannot be made up. The only way you will pass in this class is attending regularly and STUDYING. Write down every word spoken.
This class was so much harder than it should have been. Attendance isnt mandatory but if you skip class you have no way to get the notes. Also a lot of the questions on his tests dont even come from the notes so good luck.
You definitely do not need to buy the book for this class, you wont use it. Tests are easy because they are based on the worksheets. Just study the worksheet before the test and you should do good. Would take him again
Fun, intriguing lectures. Minimal homework. no attendance. Test heavy, lecture information important.
He is a great professor. He does have n interesting sense of humor, and his grading is a little hard but yet so simple. You may have gotten A's and B's in past writing classes, but in this class he is a little more strict and will shoot your ego down only because the class is hard and does take up a lot of your time.
Professor Baumgartner is a nice guy but it was difficult to fully grasp the concept of what he wanted us to do. If you are thinking about taking this class, be prepared to write. You will do 3 papers in the first month of the semester and then a term paper from there on out. Be careful!
Prof. Baumgartner knows what he wants from the class. He wants effort and participation from his students at all times. I will admit I did struggle for a bit with the term paper, but make sure you structure and detail the paper properly. He is willing to work with you if you ask. Funny guy too, got a button for surviving the class.
Was going to take it with another professor but she passed awaty. If you do not totally revise each paper he will take points off even if the paper is done well. An A paper becomes a B. He brags about not giving As but to a few and gave a button for surviving his class which should be the same level as second year english.. has a big ego.
Really cares, do things exactly the way he says to do it. If you put in the work, pay attention in class, and meet with him to discuss your paper outside of class you will do well. Difficult to get feedback but just fix the things he says to fix. Great teacher, learned a lot.
Do the assignments and study for the tests and you'll do fine. He teaches so well. Not a lot of homework so it shouldn't be a hard class.
Really easy material with fun lectures. doesn't take attendance. test were easy
Dr. Baumgartner was great I took his national gov't class taught w Dr. Kassab and it was great. Each professor taught from their political standpoint and it was interesting to hear them debate about historical and current issues. The worksheets and tests were easy and if you came to class you could get extra credit. This was my favorite class.
My experience in POLS 1010 as a whole has been tough with a change of professor mid semester and insufficient number of assignments to balance grades. But on Prof. Baumgartner, his syllabus is very straight to the point which is great, just be sure you actually read it. I forgot to grab a scantron before a test and had no chance to make it up.
Really wish I could have gotten more constructive criticism and had more freedom to experiement.
Will lecture and lecture for hours but when comes test time nothing he said in lecture is on the test. If you study and memorize the work sheet you should be set.
