Reviews (101)
Joe cares about students and worked to undo weird math dept policies. He also made most of the concepts pretty clear, but vector fields in the end were rushed. That's normal for the class from what I've heard. I felt totally unprepared for the final, but the note sheet had everything I needed on it. I'm expecting an A. I'd recommend Joe.
A great teacher who knows his stuff. It is fairly hard class, as is any math, but he is very clear in his explanations. Attending class is a must as he will usually cover new material every class but he does start the next class with a short review. Because of his teaching I aced the final. I highly recommend Bilello's Class
He makes himself an ally of the class; joining you in your battle against the forces of MyMathlab and department finals. He does, however, seem to be slightly annoyed by questions that are trivial to him.
His notes make no sense and he doesn't write down his thought process which makes it difficult to see what he is doing and why.
Tough, but great Professor. Does not accept late assignments, so don't even ask! Has a way of presenting tough concepts in a simple format. His test reviews are spot on for his exams.
He's an alright instructor, definitely seems annoyed with students that ask questions that are "trivial" and doesn't seem too thrilled about repeating steps/processes during lecture. He doesn't reply to emails and grades are rarely posted in a timely fashion. He does give good review sheets/feedback for tests though.
Tests are way harder than the study guides. Tough grader. Don't be late to class, he wants hw due when class starts or you get half credit for the hw assignment if you are late no matter if the question is right or wrong. Doesn't smile that much, sort of friendly. Alright teacher overall, tough and strict.
He is a good instructor. There are lots of homework (Mymathlab, and paper). I can tell he is prepared for the class. However, he doesn't like it when students are late. Half credit as total score if hw not turned in at start of class. Really tough and strict, sometimes it scares me. Doesn't smile that often. Gets annoyed by trivial questions.
Doesn't smile. Doesn't show gratitude towards students. Prepares for class in a good way, but not respectful towards students.
This class was ridiculously hard. Just when I thought I got it, I'd take a test, and I'd bomb it. The study guides were nothing like the tests. Would not take again. Way harder than the college algebra class I took in high school.
I thought I was pretty good at math until I took this class with this professor. I had to W from the class because he was a horrible professor. I tried asking him questions on material I didn't understand and he would give me the look of "are you serious? it's easy!!!". He does not let you use notes on the exam b/c you're no longer in HS. Bad prof.
I had Professor Bilello for College Algebra. He was nice and he taught the class well. He was kind of funny and tried to engage the students in the class. The course was pretty basic, it was pretty much everything I had learned in Alg 2 in high school. Not too hard
Great professor who explains topics very well. However, very difficult exams.
Very good classes, he was very interesting and explained well. However, his class was very fast paced and tests were very hard and also worth 70% of your grade. He would take off for minor mistakes and it seemed very weird. Overall it was a very difficult course but a good teacher. I liked the recitation period (very important!)
I don't understand previous reviews. He works on a topic until everyone understands, takes/expects all questions, never treated a question as trivial(even basic math). Was funny but still respectful. The only trouble I had was that his teaching method is tough for note taking for me. Great teacher. Don't be late, that's not a hard expectation.
Personally, I find all of these negative reviews bemusing. Professor Bilello is a well-respected and passionate professor. Unlike most professors, he incentivizes attending class because he does everything in person (ie- no online slides). If you skip class, you will fail. If you work hard and show up, you'll get an A. He's also pretty funny.
Joe Bilello, hands down is the best professor. He makes math fun and easy to learn. If you show up to the classes, work hard and do all the homework you are all set. He is very good at teaching.
Prof Bilello is a great teacher. He tried to get students interested in trig at 9:30 in the morning. His lectures don't involve any electronic components and there are no online notes. If you skip class, you'll miss material you need and a lot of math jokes. Grading is mostly determined by tests, but there are weekly homework assignments.
Great at teaching. Clear lectures and don't forget +C....
Docked points on a test for spelling. Funny, okay lessons, but tons of HW and one fierce grader.
Although it was all online, he posts daily video lectures of each topic that give a great overview, although I only watched the ones for some of the harder sections. The homework is not too bad, and the reviews are almost exactly like the tests so be sure and understand those concepts. He was also quick to respond to email, even for a summer class.
Joe is a great teacher. He is very thorough and has a knack for explaining tough things. You'll have to be serious about the class i.e. show up and do the HW. Be a good student and you'll have a good outcome in this class. Joe is left handed so try and sit on the right side of the class!
Mr. Bilello is an amazing calculus teacher, who does his best to ensure that his students understand the material. His lectures are packed full of content, so going to them is crucial to your success. Homework can be heavy at times, but is more than manageable if you budget your time effectively. I highly recommend him for anyone looking to learn.
Great teacher. He really tries to understand the students' perspective. He also gives out advice and tries to keep the class awake in the morning by making small jokes. I've always had bad math teachers in high school, but he made problems that I didn't understand back then easy to understand. Strongly advice him
I'm in my third year, and Bilello is by far the best professor I've had so far! The class is for sure hard, but he makes things a lot easier. He keeps the lectures entertaining but is sure to teach you everything you'll need to know for tests. He always replies to emails quickly and is easily accessible outside of class.
I am taking this class online. I highly advice you to watch all of his videos and do all the recitations so you can understand the concept. Try to get ahead of the game. There are 5-6 new concepts in one week as well as 5-6 mathlab assignments so there are a lot of materials to cover. You don't even need a tutor if you do all above. Explains well.
Professor Bilello never cared to help students. He wouldn't explain the material well and expected you to know everything without asking questions. He would make sarcastic remarks anytime you'd ask a question, and did not actually care if his students learned the material. Reviews were nothing like the exam, and he did not prepare students well.
The class was challenging because it moves fast and covers a lot of material, but professor Bilello was a really good professor and was available to help in office hours if you needed help. I really enjoyed his class, and would recommend. There is a lot of homework, but if you don't procrastinate, it is easily manageable.
Going to lecture is vital to understand how to do each type of problem unless you have the ability to understand math textbooks. There is a written homework due every week and an online. However, homework really gets you the practice you need. Recitation gets you even more practice and easy points if you just show up. He gives in depth review exams
By far the worst professor I have ever had. The reviews on here are so misleading. If you are anyone but a white male, this professor will show you no respect. This professor did everything in his power to make learning difficult. His ego drives his class structure and he forces you to attend class by so he can lecture in front of a full room.
Do NOT take this professor. He is not respectful or caring towards his students. He teaches the "new math" and is inconsistent with the method of solving the same problems. He also grades heavily on how you solve a problem and not just the solution, so you essentially have to memorize how he wants you to do each different variance of a problem.
A lot of people are blinded by this professors charisma, but don't let it fool you. He is not here to help students learn, he is here to exert power over them. He refuses to give out in-class notes, even if you have an excused absence. The class notes are crucial because you have to do the problems his way. Worst professor ever.
This professor is just unkind. So much homework that is nothing like the test. The reviews are long and also nothing like the test. And the tests count for a major portion of your grade. This professor never cared for his students.
Professor Bilello is not a good professor. You can tell he doesn't care about his students and their success. He frequently says rude comments to students when they're just asking a question, which makes students not want to engage.
Terrible
If you can't do, teach.
Really unfair grader. Teaches things a specific way, and if you don't solve the problem his way, you'll get it wrong. Not understanding of excused absences and won't even provide the class notes so you can learn his way of solving problems. He also teaches high school students, so that should tell you enough.
Take literally any other professor
What he teaches in class is nothing like the exams. He throws a lot of curve-balls on tests that he does not prepare you for.
Not accessible outside of class. Does not help on homework and grades it really hard.
Tests are worth a large percentage of your grade and they're so hard. The questions are confusing and he tries to trick you.
Does not explain things well, expects you to just know.
Does not give feedback or help you if youre struggling.
Bilello will not even look you in the eyes during office hours. He is extremely unhelpful if you ask questions and makes exams seem straightforward but throws multiple tricks and curveballs. Seems charismatic and understanding at first... but is very rude and downright mean to students. AVOID him at all costs - terrible prof.
ALOT of written homework, online homework, and exams are pretty tough. His material relies a lot on memorization and if you aren't a first-year math major, you're gonna find it hard to balance all your other classes alongside this class. I also disliked how rude and condescending he is. Would always assume the worst from students.
This is by FAR the worst professor took this class during a pandemic so we shifted online. Does not take any consideration for students and puts his class above all else. Says he doesn't want to trick you then puts a question on a test students couldn't answer to see who would cheat. Take literally anyone else, does not care about students' success
The first week he was great. After that, he turned into a completely different person. Extremely rude and condescending. If you ask a question in class, youll regret it. Due to COVID, we shifted online and his lack of care hit an ALL TIME LOW. The exam was extremely hard, he included questions to trick students. He cares more about inflicting fear
Our third exam was a joke. He tried to trap students. I understand cheating is an issue, but to purposely word questions as if 1) kids can use calculators, just to trap them for it since its a non calculator course, 2) include questions from calc 2, just to see who got them right and PERHAPS cheated, etc... its ridiculous. Very disappointed.
Joe is one of the worst professors I've taken. He is completely inconsiderate and thinks the world revolves around his class. Everything has to be done exactly how he wants or he'll give 0s. No minor mistakes or you will fail an assignment. He is not open for discussion and is passive aggressive with students.
Joe was definitely one of THE WORST professors I have seen. He gives out a ton of homework and the exams look nothing like what we practice during the assignments. He is rude and uncaring for his students. He will dock you points for absolutely anything, even if you have a completely valid reason. If you see him, get out ASAP.
looking at previous reviews, i was a bit biased when taking his class, but he was actually a good teacher, his personality might throw some people off but overall i enjoyed his class, and would recommend him again, the way he taught made things easy to understand. he does grade in a very specific way, but once understand its not bad.
Literally the worst teacher I have ever had. Terrible and boring lectures and very inconsiderate to students. There were also a ton of rude remarks that he made towards students if they got the answer wrong. All he does is talk and explain things, but it was hard to follow and he was too hard on grading.
Literally one of the worst teachers Ive ever had. Doesnt care about his students or their learning. Gives no explanation when teaching and acts inconvienced when asking a question or for help.
You want homework feedback? Too bad.
Doesn't understand technology, and is ignorant and close minded . Avoid if possible.
Joseph Billelo is a terrible professor. It truly feels that he is out to fail his students. He is disrespectful and makes it seem like you are inconveniencing him. He will not tell you how many points things are worth, but he will mark you off. He doesn't provide feedback on any work. if you ask him a question, he replies with, "I can't tell you"
AVOID!! He will assume you are cheating if you do not solve the problems the way that HE teaches it. He uses the same YouTube videos from 2 years ago and they are not helpful. I had to hire an outside tutor to teach me everything. During a pandemic, I thought that some professors would be lenient but it feels like he is out to make his class fail.
Billelo makes this class way harder than it needs to be. He thinks that his class is the most important. Most professors make their exams during the week right? Well if you are taking him online, be prepared for Sunday Exams that you have to zoom in to at a specific time. You better learn his methods as well, otherwise he will accuse u of cheating
Man, I haven't taken Bilello in 2 years, but I miss him every time I show up to a lecture with a terrible instructor. If I could have this man teach me every subject throughout my degree, I would pay extra. I can't believe his talents get wasted on first-year calculus. This is my petition to get Bilello nominated for every course in the school.
WARNING: DO NOT TAKE CALCULUS WITH HIM. I have never-- in 10 years of being a student in higher ed-- taken such a hard class... and it wasn't bc of the course material. Calc is challenging, and Joe makes it 10x harder. Spent more time on this class than all my others COMBINED and I still didn't get a 94. You have been warned.
I would have to say he has great guided notes... but regardless of the great structure of his class their is so much homework, 4 exams and a final, 1-2 quizzes a week... The stress of the homework and quizzes sets you back and makes it hard to learn upcoming material. Worst office hours I have ever attended. Find a different Professor.
Before registering for class, I came here. Expected old low effort videos, difficult grading, no feedback, & lack of accessibility according to reviews. I was surprised to find out he now has updated lectures, better feedback, and is a decent grader. Even gives EXTRA CREDIT for exams. HW is in MML and written worksheets. 4 tries in MML for 100%!
Was honestly probably the worst teacher I have taken so far. Incredibly pretentious, berates you for coming to office hours to ask questions and is condescending towards students who ask questions in lecture. The average on the final for my class was a 52%.
He's the worst professor I've ever taken in my life. He took off great points for minor errors. He didn't want me to get a perfect score and would find one tiny mistake to mark down points. When I didn't do the assignment in his style of solving, he took points off for that as well. He didn't even give comments for why it was wrong. Don't take him!
This Professor is so bad, I wanna give him a ZERO. But thats not possible, so I give him a ONE. He grades wayyyy to rough. He would be great for an upper level Calc. class, but not for Calc. 1. He is a smart guy and knows what he is teaching, but he is simply extra for no reason. Do yourself a favor and dont take his class.
Bilello is by far one of the worst professors I have ever had. He is rude and ignorant. Coming into his office hours is like talking to a wall. He is rude and extra when you ask him questions. I literally cannot stand him. Do not take his course. Chose anyone else. Not this so called professor. Not sure how he is still teaching. Worst guy ever.
So inconsiderate and mean. Does NOT care about his students. The only reason I rated 1 because there is no 0.
Every time I emailed him, he was always passive. I asked if it was possible to raise my grade or if he advises me to withdraw and he told me "that's a personal decision." He does not care at all about his students, please don't take this course with him.
Professor Bilello is not committed to helping his students learn. He is difficult to reach out to and also grades ridiculously tough. Tests make up 65% of the grade (including the final test). There is no extra credit offered for this class and late work has to be turned in within a week for partial credit (worksheets cannot be turned in late).
Good teacher
no grading outlines he just takes points off when he feels like it no communication not willing to help students learn
Will take points for the smallest things on worksheets even if the answer and work is correct. DOES not care to teach or show corrections, rather will just write "No", "X", or "?". Once while watching his lecture I wrote down the answer of a problem that was in the both lecture/HW and procceeds to write "?" like he wasn't the one to teach that.
One of the worst professor I have ever had in my entire life. I only took this class because it is required and there was no other professor teaching it for summer. He was mean, rude, unapproachable and very tough grader. He took off points for no reason at all. Didn't explain why he took off points. Only gave us 1 hour to complete 20 question.
Avoid taking a class with this grouch if you can because he sucks. Such a mean and rude person. Doesn't care about teaching his students. He does outline the steps well but his tests are tricky and confusing. He is doesn't care about the students. Doesn't ever respond to email. Sucks at using technology and blames you for it. Avoid him!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When grading homework he will just mark off points without making any sort of note on what was wrong and RARELY gives feedback. He will also mark off points for not showing the work that he teaches regardless if you still got the right answer. Even if you use some methods from MyMathLab, which you also have HW on if it's not "his" methods its wrong
If you can, avoid taking this professor. Tough grader and very strict on grading. When you ask him questions or have technical problems, he is very rude and blames it on you.
This guy shouldn't be called a professor, sucks, unreasonable, sets you up for failure. doesn't think critically, you're unexcused from ANYTHING, doesn't matter if you're on your dealthbed. Doesn't leave feedback on your work. It's not the concept you're learning that is the issue, he's the issue. if you still take him, I've warned you,
Instead of things being due at the end of the week because its an "ONLINE CLASS" They are Due at the beginning of every week. He takes random points of worksheets for no reason provided he makes the same errors on his own notes. He takes the most complicated approach to every concept. Office hours are brief and you are made to feel stupid.
If you have taken a calc class before you will do great. I personally have never taken a calc class, please know it takes a lot of practice outside of class time to do well. He is a bit condescending; I believe he doesn't mean it half the time, but it does discourage many people. NO corrections and little to no opportunities for extra credit.
WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR I took the online hybrid course and it was the worst mistake I have made. This professor wants you to fail and is a tough grader and gives no feedback just lots of random points taken off of homework/tests.The class is test heavy which is great if you can teach yourself. Don't take this professor take anyone else.
DO NOT TAKE THE CLASS WITH HIM TAKE WITH ANYONE ELSE!! Worst professor I have ever had.
The professor graded terrible taking off random points with home work and tests marking off the majority of points for small mistakes. If you are not already good at math or calculus you will need to get a tutor because this class will not be easy to understand to get help in. I would not recommend this professor!!!!
I was on the fence about whether or not I wanted to switch back to my liberal arts major. If I stayed with STEAM, I had to take calc1. Professor Bilello was the only option and I, unfortunately, caught Covid and couldn't make it to class (week 2). The interaction that I had with him was so unbelievably unpleasant that he made the decision for me.
Joe's lectures are based around him solving worksheets which get really confusing, except if you take notes on said worksheets. The problem is, most of the time in those worksheets he just works around examples without really explaining them first, and then gets annoyed if asked any questions. Tests are unnecessarily hard, and there is 0 feedback.
The worst math professor I've ever had. I would definitely not recommend him to my worst enemy. He does not care about his students and will only provide you with lectures that were filmed in 2008 on 420p. The lectures have nothing to do with the worksheets. BEWARE of taking his class if you are someone who struggles with math.
If you are considering taking him, seriously do not!!! He's by far the worst professor I have ever had. I took him once and got a D in the class, so I was forced to retake the class the following semester. I was so bummed when he was the only one who would fit my schedule, so I took him a SECOND time. This time I got a C+, but worst teacher by far.
This professor by far the most disappointing. Gave no feedback or partial credit for showing my work. Was dry when I attended office hours, and offered no flexibility. I was dedicating all my time to this class, had to attend hours of tutoring after 2 hour lectures just to understand the concept. Do not recommend if you struggle with math
Office hours at the most impossible times from 10:30-11 (30 mins). Doesn't let multiple students in his office hours so if you need help and its after 11, you're not getting any. Easily gets frustrated with students when they ask questions and doesn't and answers questions by "reading out his work". Worst professor ever. Not sure why he works here.
He is a horrible professor, I've never struggled in a math course until I went through his class. He never responds to any of my emails asking for help and is continuing to fail me on assignments without giving any necessary feedback which isn't helpful. He grades super tough and if you miss one notation then he marks off points which fails you.
Terrible at Teaching DONT TAKE THIS TEACHER, you wont learn a thing
Provides zero explanations if you get something wrong, outdated videos, harsh grading, zero communication between students. tests are like ALL OF YOUR GRADE so if you fail one its pretty much over for you
Incredibly mean on grading and nearly unreachable, lectures were intensely boring and there were a few tests that determined your entire grade, had to take the class TWICE just to barely pass, tests are incredibly packed late in the semester making studying near impossible. DO NOT TAKE CALC WITH HIM.
This guy will not post important test dates and exams. He will expect you to memorize the syllabus and every important date on there instead of posting the dates.
DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT TAKING THIS MAN! Unless you are a literal genius and sociopath, then you might barely pass. Graded based on how you do on exams, so if you fail one you cant go back. Not supportive and if you ask him any question he responds by making you feel worthless. I wish things would change for people taking him in the future:(
Lessons are explained in a way that is easy to understand and extra credit is applied to your exams. He is a really tough grader. He grades solely based on your answers. He will take points off for EVERY detail of your work regardless if you use the correct method and correct steps. He does not care about your intention in the work you do.
I'm taking his online course right now, and he's a tough grader. One simple idea wrong on a worksheet will get you marked off about 30% on your grade rather than just one point like it should be. Also never met a professor who puts ads on his youtube videos. Can't even get through a lecture without 5 ads. Guess he wants the extra money.
Avoid this professor by any means. Very tough grader, removes random points, gives 0 feedback, and unwilling to talk to you. Teaches calculus basically backwards, and won't explain anything about the subject matter. Class grade is determined by 3 exams, if you fail any one of them you can forget about passing. Good luck if he's the only choice.
Tough grader, but the lectures are clear. unstuck study was a lifesaver for preparing for the exams. Stay on top of the syllabus and you'll get through this class.
Terrible. :((((((((((((((
-does not feel approachable or welcoming, office hours feel genuinely scary -lecture videos are clear, and worksheets are good practice, but very test heavy class -something like 25% weight for first two exams, and 35% weight for the final :( -can find success with discipline and hard work but buckle up for tough grading and stressful exams
Expects you to have a complete understanding of previous math courses with no review. Quizzes are a lecture behind and lectures are a section ahead, good luck keeping things straight in your head if you have a poor grasp on math. Does not tell you mistakes you've made on grading, just an x and a blank space.
