Caddell is the man. Everyone agrees on this point. He likes to tell war stories and is a very interesting man. Air power and sea power consist of a thesis paper follwed by a longer dialectic paper on a topic of your choice. There are also several tests which consist of take home essays and 4 or 5 identifications. Fairly easy :)

Caddell's lectures are too fast to the point where you can hardly take notes. I gave up going to class in the second week because I thought his lectures were pretty insufferable. Lazy professor who took 3 months to grade a 5 page essay. Don't even know if we will get our dialectic essay back prior to grades being finalized...

Professor Caddell is a good professor overall, but his lectures are long winded and besides the point. His TA also is not good, as they get papers back months later so you have no clue what your grade is until the end of the semester. This class should be easy, but the grading of the TAs in this class, as well as the few grades make it difficult

Dr. Caddell is a great professor. His class is very lecture-heavy, but you will do fine if you take good notes. You must come to class in order to do well. The class consists of 2 papers, a midterm, and a final. He did take a while to return grades, but he told us that in advance. Overall, I would recommend taking Dr. Caddell if you need the class.

Caddell is such a chill guy. The lectures just served as information, which you can internalize if you want to or not. You don't have to attend class because your grade is based on papers you research. Also, there is no homework ever besides writing a total of three papers. Provides a cheat sheet for the final. I'm personally retaking him for 213.

Not as much the amount of papers, but he assigns lengthy papers. His lectures were out of this world, he enjoys his job more than any other professor. Not too hard as he makes it clear what he expects.

Dr. Caddell has not only historical knowledge but also experience in this field! His personal stories are hilarious and his lectured are engaging because of this. Even prolonged boring topics are made engaging because of this. Beware he DOES take a long time to grade. Papers are long with questionable criteria. Exams are hard but not impossible.

Professor Caddell is an absolute legend. His grading criteria can be a little unclear, but please go and see him! His office hours or after class, he is very personable and clear once you can sit him down for a few minutes and after that all his courses are a breeze. If you like military history, do yourself a favor and take all his classes!

Joe Caddell is an extremely knowledgeable professor. I thoroughly enjoyed taking his class. You are graded by few things and he gives clear instructions on how he wants them completed. He grades harder than average for papers, but if you follow his instructions precisely and use "outstanding" sources, you will be fine. Lecture HEAVY, att. not mand.

I really wanted to like this class, but I didn't. Lectures were often boring with him just reading off a powerpoint that was super repetitive had unnecessary information due to not being updated since the mid 2010s. Took 3 months to get back grades, and he's very particular about essays, which makes writing for this class a drag. :/

Professor Caddell's class was great, although his lectures could drag on at certain points as he sometimes tends to ramble. The final exam was very easy, as he allows you to take one page of notes in to take the exam, ended up really helping my grade after harsh grading on the papers before it.

Professor Caddell is a great guy and funny lecturer from a long military and academic career. Although attendance isn't mandatory, if you go to class and office hours it will be a manageable A. He reads drafts and if you give them to him it will be hard to do poorly in this class. Be there the class before fall break for some extra help.

Professor Caddell is one of the most interesting professors at UNC. I took both air and sea power, and he is knowledgable about both. Lots of notes, quick lecturing style, and writing, but you will learn a lot and he gives you all the info you need. I liked his courses.

Caddell is definitely unorthodox compared to other professors at UNC. He doesn't really use Canvas, syllabus is 100s of pages, grades slowly etc. BUT, Caddell is so knowledgeable, he is clear about his expectations for the few assignments in 488 and is very kind. He is one of the professors who wants to get to know you beyond the classroom.

One of those professors who really stands out because they're in it for the teaching. The class was a little disorganized and the lectures were super information heavy, but I learned so much from Dr. Caddell. He really enjoys getting to know students and is personable. If organization isn't a dealbreaker, I would definitely take a class with him!

The whole class is two papers, a midterm, and a final. If you are confident in your writing capabilities and are interested in the topic, I recommend this course. Professor Caddell is always willing to read your paper drafts, so take advantage of that. The class lectures are engaging and there is very little required reading.

I really expected to enjoy this class more, given all the glowing reviews. While Professor Caddell is truly one-of-a-kind, this didn't always make the class enjoyable. Content moves super fast in lecture, the syllabus are super unstructured, and you're lucky to have a single grade back before the final. He can also be harsh with feedback.
