He expects you to come to class with readings done and ready for discussion. There really is never too much homework and he makes the classroom environment fun. I never liked talking in class, but his class is set up so that everyone feels comfortable.
not too straight laced, deep voice, and yummy broad shoulders. Great class organization and lenient grading.
Nice teacher, really helpful, this class is a lot of fun.

This guy is a kinda new teacher, but is not really clear about instructions, take him if you want to be confused the whole semester! Otherwise he is a nice guy
the workload at 1st seems intimidating, but really its just based on attendance, reading quizes, with the occaisonal hw or test. he is not super easy, but is definitly willing to sit there& explain things to u as many times as u need. he is also really easy to talk to, and has a good sense of humor. id defintily reccomend him becuz you learn alot!
Good teacher, easy class, basically busy work. Teacher makes classroom enviroment fun, we had some interesting convos.
He is so nice. He prepares us well for our tests. If you fail its cus you didn't study hard enough. He does a really good job and he is a good teacher. He is a fair grader on exams, too. This class is easy if you participate and do your reading. It isn't a tough reading.
He's a nice guy but ur gna have 2 exams whose questions are so vague any answer could be the right one,& a huge group project that will take up any amount of spare time u have in the semester, but some ppl thought it was fun, i dont know. take it if u really want to work 4 ur grade
He is the worst teacher EVER! He is hard and he does not care how much effort you put into something. There was soooo much reading and the tests were VERY tough! I highly DO NOT reccomend him
hate this guy. good quiet humor. scares the crap out of you from his speach. very serious, tooo tooo serious. expects hella from you. lots of reading(read the whole book in less than 2andhalf weeks). very picky on topics. don't reccommend at all. hard instructor to pass. just hate him.
He cares about his students. Returns H.W/exams/papers fast He expects a lot but gives a lot. You will learn alot. He will even help in the e-mail.
He si a really nice guy, and kinda cute too, its just that his classes require a lot f your time. If you aren't reading his book for a quiz you are meeting outside of class with your group. Way too much meticulous work. The presentation would have been a lot easier if he hadnt intimidated us with lots of crazy steps.
very anal. hard grader. but he does get your work back quick and his tests are super easy. it's just the work load and reading that will kill you. that and the group project which is worth a big portion of your grade.
Joe is a great teacher for speech class. He makes you feel very comfortable for public speaking and gives good advice to make you a better speaker. Lots of fun and yes he is pretty cute.
Joe is a great professor. He really cares about his students and wants you to do well.
Professor Carranza is awesome! He really knows his stuff. His classes are fun. Tests are really easy. He expects you to put in some work. He is an A+ professor forsure!
Joe is one of my favorite instructor's here! His introduction is kind of intimidating, as you do have to keep up with the reading. A lot of cold calling. Quite a few quizzes, but he drops the two lowest. You will actually learn something and have fun during! I recommend him 100%.
Great Proffessor! He really tried to help you understand how to speak effectively. I totally respect him and his teaching style.
One of the best Professors I've ever had
HE MAKES A BORING SUBJECT FUN.
this was a great class learned alot!! and joe is super hottt!!!!
Joe is pretty cool....this class is pretty intesne at times though, he expects you to read, know what the reading is about class, quizzes are pretty easy if you read...textbook is a must for this class. Overall hes a cool cat:)
you'll love him! he's a great, interesting, and patient teacher. the only time you really need the book is for his short (5 question) reading check quizzes, and 2 exams per semester. really easy to get a good grade if you pay attention.
Mr. Carranza was one of the best teachers I've had at Stanislaus. He seems to really care about his students and their future. It's also nice to have eye candy during class.
Best professor at csus! He is very organized, helpful and funny. I strongly recommend him since he makes class fun and interesting. The book is required since there is weekly reading quizzes. The test are challenging if you do not study. The final consists of a one hr group presentation . Finally, joe is one handsome professor =)
Carranza, is a great professor. Explains everything clearly, helps his students as much as he can. Midterm very easy, however he expects a lot from the speeches. He is picky and docks off points unnecessarily. Other than that, he is great! Has humor and makes everyone feel comfortable in class.
He will help you whenever you ask. My group had a hard time picking out how we wanted to do the final project and he was more than willing to give guidelines. Very easygoing, very kind. He didn't make you want to ditch class or fall asleep.
I don't see how he's hot. He's extremely funny and he's willing to help you out. 2 EXAMS- True or False and a group presentation. Seems he has favorites 'cause tends to look at certain students. I still recommend him.
Joe is an awesome professor. He's very chill and laid back. He informs you on everything he expects. No homework and you only use the book for the first two months. Two tests the rest is just group work and interacting with the class. I recommend anyone to take Joe's courses.
Joe's lectures are alway interesting, and he is easy to talk to and usually available for questions. The hardest part of this class was the group project but he gives you the things you need to be successful as long as people in your group aren't slackers. If you dont want to do your fare share of a group project, dont take this class!
This professor is exceptionally rude and completely unqualified to be teaching even this simple introductory level course. He acts like he knows everything but in reality, his students often prove to be smarter than he is. Do not take this professor. He is not teaching at a university level.
The professor does an excellent job at telling you what you need to know and what will be on the test. At the end of the semester you have to do a group project. The group project is supper important if u get stuck with a not so great group you are basically screwed.
Joe's great! He's interesting, easy to consult, and clear about what you need to do & when it needs to be done right at the beginning of the semester. Everything he expects of you is mapped out in outlines for each speech; stick to that & you'll be fine. At times he seems rather scary, but don't even trip: He's a great guy & a fantastic instructor.
Great professor! Very helpful if you are confused. Hints very well as to what will be on the next quiz. Class is fun and upbeat! Definitely want to be in this class!
This is a straight forward professor. He will tell you clearly what you need to do and is more than welcome to answer questions. You can tell he is very dedicated in his job as a professor. Highly recommendable. The exams are easy and he gives you what you need to know for speeches. Two thumbs up!!
Joe is super funny and super cool. He is extremely straightforward with everything he wants and explains in detail. He tells you everything that will be on quizzes and tests. There is one group project at the end of the semester but it is pretty easy. Definitely recommend him!
Joe was my absolute favorite teacher, he is the best. He made the class interesting and he worked hard to try and relate terms to our lives and he made assignments relevant to what was happening to us. As long as you keep up on reading and studying the class is interesting and quite enjoyable. I definitely recommend Joe
I love this teacher! He's really nice and gives great feedback. I had the opportunity to work for him at the Signal and it was great fun. I'm taking him again this semester!
Prof Carranza was a great instructor! He gave us his personal cell phone in case you needed help you could call/text him. Weekly 10 q's quizzes on reading (not bad) and a group project that goes throughout the semester with a presentation at the end(not as bad as initially thought). He's there to help as long as you show you care. Great Teacher!!!
Carranza was a great teacher! He was helpful, gave good feedback and honestly made me learn a lot. He was away a lot this semester for he's health reasons BUT was very reliable ! gave the class his # and always responded to emails. Group project was ok, he was very helpful with this project as long as he saw you cared. Great Teacher!
I was sad Joe had to leave after a month into the semester due to a surgery but he was one of my favorite professors from the one month he taught our class. He Incorporates humor into his lectures so you understand the material better and the humor also makes the lectures go by quicker. Hope he's better and returns soon!!!
I don't see Joe being a good professor as everybody said he is. If you are a student that is nervous presenting in front of audiences, I won't recommend you taking him because he is not very understanding plus he will make you more stress when presenting.
If you're planning on taking Joe make sure you're not nervous presenting. He is tough and very picky on topic. I thought he would be easy like how everybody said but he isn't.
I had Joe in Intro with like 50 people and we had a presentation and I sucked. He gave me good feedback then guaranteed he could help reduce my anxiety if I took him for Public Speaking. The next semester I couldn't get in and he gave me a permission number. As promised after much "desensitization" I am not nervous anymore and actually good.
Joe is very approachable and makes the class fun. One practice presentation near beginning of the semester, then one long one at the end for semester project with group. Quizzes on most of the chapters not difficult. Tests are fairly easy as long as you've gone over your notes and possibly read the textbook if you needed more help. Would recommend
Joe was a great teacher that was very straight forward. His lectures mattered because he related lectures to life. Really liked the group final project at the end of semester. Pay attention and take notes and you'll do just fine!
Joe is amazing! He is very clear of what he expects from you and guides you through the course. There are 3 speeches to prepare for and the final is a speech. I am very socially awkward and shy when it comes to speaking but this course definitely helped me become a better public speaker!
Very wise. Speaks in a level that not many may understand but he is a professor who wants to help out. He is chill and doesn't give out homework. Just gain confidence and do good in the presentations. Exams are not hard if you study!!!
Hands down the nicest guy ever. Very easy to understand and I actually enjoy coming to class. Comm relates to everyone, so make sure you take it!
He is an amazing person. Yes, it's a lot of work, especially all the research that you have to do, but once you have everything set up, you will enjoy doing your speech. I was afraid of talking in front of everyone, but this class helped me a lot.
I thought Carranza was an amazing professor! Definitely one of the best at CSU Stan. He will gladly work with you if you're having trouble. The only thing I didn't like was that he was kind of picky about the topic but other that that he's great. And of course he is really attractive, like seriously, Carranza can get it.
The hardest part is not speaking in front of the class, it's writing a good speech. I would write my speeches the week it was due or the night before. Just know how to organize your speech and do good reasearch. Dont slack like me, I work good under pressure. The book is a must, one exam on the entire book, 4 speeches, and a take home exam.
Took group communications, so the whole semester was about one big group project. We read the textbook but most of the chapter said wouldn't be on the quizzes. Gives Study Guides for exams. PAY ATTENTION. If you email him about missing class, he won't answer. Uses lectures to connect with students. He always makes eye contact.
He is honestly the best teacher I've ever had. He is really caring and funny. I feel like I can communicate with him easily and he does a good job telling students what is expected in a very clear manner. He understands students more than most professors. I want him as my professor again!
Overall really good professor. Class is very straightforward and really easy to get an A if you just show up and study a little. He can be a little impressed with himself at times, but a lot of the time he is nice and helps you to get through the class.
Assignments: (1) Multiple-choice exam - need the book (2) Informative speech - 4 to 5 min (3) Persuasive speech - 4 to 5 min (4) Commemorative speech - easy but get ready to cry (5) 2nd Info speech - same topic as your first speech but longer - 8 to 12 min (6) Final Exam - easy, review & compare 2 diff. indiv. on their final speech (5) Gl Hf
Carranza is very smart and knows his stuff, so he was a little tough and intimidating. 4 speeches one midterm and a final exam. Speeches were easy to write, it's the speaking that many students did not do well on. He is accessible outside of class and is actually a funny guy.
Really fantastic teacher. Could make the most boring subjects engaging.
As long as you're prepared when it comes to giving speech you will be fine. His one and only exam is really common sense. The textbook isn't used, if anything he always says you only need to read chapter 9. He is hilarious and makes students feel comfortable. Great professor!
Joe is by far one of the best professors I have ever had on campus. He wants us all to succeed and makes you feel comfortable in the classroom. There is work to be done but it is not terrible work. Thoroughly enjoyed this class with Keith Nainby as well.
Carranza is one of the best Professors at Stanislaus that I have ever had. This class is extremely interesting and he makes it apply to his students. The quizzes are simple and based on the book, just take notes on the simple readings and you'll do fine. Take GOOD notes. This will save you for the exam because it's mostly on what he teaches.
Joe is one of, if not the, best professor at Stanislaus. He does everything he car for his students. He's SUPER funny and relates to his students well. The 4first speech your required to do in class he walks you through. after that you get set free. Get ready to write a few speeches and spend some time in front of the class. 10/10 would recommend
Super easy class. Public speaking isn't everyone's cup of tea but it's an easy A as long as you follow along with his guidelines
One of my favorite classes taken at Stanislaus State so far. Public speaking can be intimidating but Joe makes it enjoyable and a great experience. I have become a better public speaker in this class and I don't get nervous in front of a crowd anymore.
Overall this class was my favorite. Very relaxed and relatable professor. He was understanding and made all the lectures interesting. We would have a quizzes every time we started a new chapter but they were very straight forward and came straight from the book. Easy to pass if you are engaged in class.
This professor is probably one of the best ones on campus. He is honest and is always there to help. Best class I have taken so far. The book can help, especially with quizzes and the final test. You'll definitely get over your public speaking fear. If you go to class and do the work, it'll be an easy A.
Joe is the most caring professor I've ever had, I've taken public speaking before and I failed it because of my anxiety. He helped me overcome my anxiety when it came to public speaking and it has helped my other classes.
Easily my favorite class . The professor does a great job of not only getting you to really grow as a speaker but he also builds up a great community atmosphere for you and your peers. It's a really rewarding class and the feeling of accomplishment you will get by the end of the course is so nice. Get ready to be pushed but only in the right ways.
Overall a great professor. He made the material interesting and applied real life examples. He is really cool person to get to know and I would take his class again.
Makes you read a lot and take a lot of quizzes. This sucks because the quizzes arent that easy and no extra credit opportunities are given. Not an easy class
He is funny and his class is a positive environment! There is one exam, and it is the only time you will need the book.
Ignore the low ratings, Joes a laidback guy with a straightforward class. Is exams are based of the book which is easy. Hardest thing is giving the speech, other than that its an easy A. I highly recommend talking to him about your speech outlines since theyre worth a lot of points. Most outgoing Professor Ive had.
Without a doubt the best teacher I have had so far at Stanislaus, and one of my favorite classes. The assignments are easy and straightforward. He will be willing to help if needed. He is hilarious during his lectures and makes real life correlations to his topics. He gives out essay question types tests, but they're easy..
This class was basically reading, participating with flipgrid discussions, then completing a short answer question quiz every week. the zoom meetings were very interesting ad explained what we would learn and turn in every week. There were about 3 essays and a speech at the end of the semester. I liked how there was a 2 day late passion everything!
Reading( if you actually read), participation in weekly discussions through GoReact. Zoom meetings explained what needed to be turned in every week. Weekly assignments were a lot but easy + there was a 2-day late period w/o penalty. I stopped doing the assignments so I did C/NC, but if I did the work, I'm sure would've passed. Hope This Helps
Professor Carranza is one of the best professors I have taken at Stan State. You do need your book for that course so make sure you get it (needed for quizzes). Also, requires a lot of FLIP GRID responses. He is not a hard professor just show up and show you're trying, and you should pass. He really wants his students to learn.
Professor Carranza is a wonderful professor. He's very engaging and likes to hear from students. Only had one textbook, which was online. You read from time to time but not much. He is NOT a tough grader and is very lenient due to Covid. Recently did my speech final and it went great, he gave fantastic feedback and is easy to talk to.
I have Joe for Fall 2021 and was in his Classroom in Communication class. I really learned a lot from his class and got inspired by becoming a teacher. This class is purposely designed for students who wants to become a teacher. It really helped me prepare and learn somethings that I didn't know as a future teacher.
Joe was amazing with engaging with the class and is very down-to-earth. He made the classroom a welcoming environment and was very encouraging. It's important to read the material he gives throughout the semester and to look over the rubrics given. Joe gave examples to follow which helped a lot. Great at replying to emails even over the weekend.
Really tough teacher, and tough grader, if there is another option take the other teacher.
AMAZING professor. He is super caring and understanding and always has a smile. In order to pass through you have to do your speeches with time. You can not cram one the day before it is due. Do not procrastinate because if you do you most certainly won't pass. Definitely recommend him!
Professor Carranza is a great professor. He really takes pride in what he does and he really wants his students to succeed in life. For the beginning of the semester we would meet through Zoom Mondays and Fridays. We would meet in person Wednesdays to catch up. Professor Carranza really makes you feel comfortable when giving a speech. Recommend.
Awesome teacher, one of the best I have ever had. He very clearly cares about this topic, and he is very good at teaching it. He is VERY encouraging when you give your speeches, and he helps you out A LOT. Easily one of my favorite professors ever. 10/10 would recommend.
Online class was set up super easy to follow. He gives very good feedback and tells you what to fix. Listen to his directions and use his checklists! He will ding you if you aren't presenting like he wants you to. He is big on participation and will call on people to make the discussion move on zoom. Answers emails hella fast.
Heard group discussions processes is easier, so I'd do that instead. The platform we used, that was required, was so expensive n super tedious. (I don't think they're requiring it moving forward though!) A lot of work to get a decent grade on a speech, even if you're a great speaker, this will challenge you & it's time consuming.
Joseph is such an amazing and caring professor. He is a very understanding and helpful with all the assignments he assigns so don't be afraid to reach out. If you do his assignments and soak up all the knowledge he has to offer you will learn a lot. Avoid procrastinating, you will fall behind !
I had Dr. Carranza's Public Speaking course online, through zoom. He is a great professor who cares a lot about his students. If you have questions, he gives very clear feedback. If you procrastinate, you will definitely fall behind! Always check the rubrics, Dr. Carranza tells you exactly what he is expecting in the speeches.
He is a tough grader and does not explain assignments clearly. Do not take his class! take group discussion instead.
He is super clear with what he wants and gives checklists and examples and answers emails super fast. He left a long recording on my speech and gave me good feedback. He really wants you to do good and grow. Only real negative is he will call on you in zoom if you aren't paying attention and cameras have to be on. You can tell he cares though.
Lots of homework. Two major speeches. One 5 minutes and the other 10. You have to buy Mcgraw hill. Gives extensions on speeches. I'm not good with public speaking so I struggled but besides that it is easy.
I personally really enjoyed his class. He was very thorough when explaining things and how you get graded. I would 100% take this course again. Just be prepared to read and write comments on your peers' presentations.
By far one of the best professors I have taken at stan. He truly cares about his students and teaching. I can confidently say he has helped my public speaking improve. He leaves clear feedback, is available when needed, and replies to emails quickly. Can truly recommend taking his class. Participation matters a lot. 3 speeches and on final.
Very kind professor, will answer any questions you have in a timely manner. He does give a lot of questions so definitely do not procrastinate on the work. 3 major speeches and small short ones throughout the semester.
