Casalnuovo is a nice professor but difficult. Fynewever is a better chemistry professor
he's awful and walks like a duck. he doesn't teach you anything, you learn it all from the book, his one example for things doesn't help at all. Fynewever, you rock!!
For those who take chm 121-3 series, Joe Casalnuovo is one of the better chem prof's at Cal Poly. I earned my chem degree from Cal Poly, and I can assure that Joe is a good prof. although his test could be very hard (therefore you have to study).
He's an excellent professor. A bit hard, but he knows a lot. Very approachable during office hours.
He's a bit hard but very willing to hel you. The test are difficult even with hours of studying you will still have difficulties. Best bet is to take some a clas with another professor.
A bit hard, but he gives you all the notes so all you have to do is read them and study a bit.
He's good but hard! Be ready to study. His notes are key to the tests. Don't waste too much time studying the homework, other than for the points, they are worthless.
Dr. Joe is a very good professor. He is extremely helpful during office hours and also in class. His notes are clear and are given to you in handouts. Don't miss a class - get every handout - and stay on top of your **** and you'll be fine. If I needed anymore Chem classes I would try to take it with Dr. Joe.
He's a very difficult instructor for the lab class, because he's very strict. Be very concerned about your sig. figs(those take off alot of pts. here & there if you make mistakes). A quiz is held for the first 15 mins. of every class. These aren't quite simple & requires you to have read the lab before hand & remember info. from the last class.
I'm going to be fair and say that he IS a nice teacher and gives us handout as notes. But his in class lectures are SOO boring that i get disinterested and lose focus. Before i liked chemistry and now i HATE it because of him. Not just that, but this exams are pretty tricky and he grades hard on the exams. He doestn give you partial credit.
His exams are tricky. Give unclear questions. Hard on grading. Average of the class is C+ but doesn't say what is the range for A or B. I got both As for 121&122 but this class could pull my grade down. Don't like this guy at all. Should have taken it with another instrutor (Walton)
He's a nice guy, and pretty good teacher. Every lecture is important so you shouldnt miss it. His tests are difficult but they (like everything in his class) is graded on a big curve that really helps out. If you are ever confused, you're skrewed, he'll just confuse you even more. DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS GIVEN. They really help.
Very good instructor. Helps you understand WHY things happen the way it does. He always gives crystal clear instructions and a thorough answer. He hates questions because the instructions he gives are easy. And if you ask him a easy question, of course he'll make you feel stupid. Would take him again (because of what I learned)
He is a good teacher. His gives a lot of partial credit on exams. He can be boring at times and funny, so it depends on the day. Oh and he likes comic books.
He knows his stuff. He is a little harder than the other chem two professors but I have learned a lot more than my friends who took other professors.
If you're interested in the "why's" and "how's" of chemistry, you will like this professor. He goes very in depth and explains everything. It does make things a little more difficult, because of all the detail, but it is very interesting. He gives tricky exams and is a tough grader! Very detail-oriented, but still very doable.
Though, Dr Casalnuovo is a good instructor. He's extremely hard especially in a 100 level chem class. He really harps on the sig figs, chemical rxns, units, etc. The average on our first quiz was 55% and that's just a quiz! I got As in all my Chemistry classes and B+s (B pluses) in the labs but I'm struggling hard in this class. Got 75% on 1st quiz
Dr Casalnuovo is a solid choice. However, I do not recommend taking him if you struggle hard in Chemistry and/or taking a full load. The exams are hard, I got As in chemistry and I got a 74 and 67 respectively for midterm I and II. Average on his midterms were 66 and 63. Don't know how I did on the final. Lol. But his packets help, study those hard
Very strong teacher who is all about business and moves through material quickly. However, he is one of the more difficult chemistry teachers, but if you feel up to a challenge and know what you're doing, you will definitely know the material well after completing the class.
Casalnuovo was the hardest professor Ive taken so far. His quizzes were tricky and tough for me, and he is an extremely tough grader. Make sure you do well on your lab reports or else you will lose a lot of points which will hurt your grade. I guess if you truly know what you have to do, then you should be fine.
One of the best professors I have ever had! His lecture notes are super helpful, he is kind, patient and truly cares for his students! If you like chemistry and want to know more about it then take him!
Took Dr. C for 121 and 123 and loved his classes. Very knowledgeable and caring professor. Dont be afraid to talk to him hes a very caring man. He provides notes for you so all you have to do is fill in the blanks. Study those packets and youll get an A easy.
I love this professor and I would argue that he is one of the best professors I've ever had. He is so knowledgeable and really cares about your success. He makes Chemistry fun and exciting. He responds to emails almost immediately and is accessible outside the class. Genuinely loved his class and his teaching. Definitely recommend.
I don't care what anyone says, THIS MAN IS AN EDUCATOR. I may not have gotten the grade I wanted, but I really felt I learned in his class. He does this presentation at the end about the universe. I wasn't gonna show up that last lecture, so I could study for finals, but I respect him so much, I went. It was a great presentation. He's great!!!
His lectures are very fast paced, but he is extremely thorough. He seems to not like to go over things more than once in lecture, but will help you in office hours. The class builds 1210 topics, so make sure you're solid. Examsand quizzes are difficult, but if you put in the time on reading, homework, and practice quizzes, you will be fine.
He is a nice guy. You need to pay close attention to details on everything.
One of the hardest class I took. Read that he was nice, but he's more intimidating. Went to his office hours, but still had a difficult time understanding how to do lab problems. If you're struggling in chemistry, go to another professor. It'll benefit you and your grade.
Way harder than 1210. His handout notes are way too much to read and process. Very mean and makes you feel dumb when asking questions. Doesn't use blackboard, so seeing what you have in the class is not an option. If you don't get a 45% overall or higher in MC, you fail the class. I do not recommend him.
He is honestly an amazing lecturer in my opinion, especially with the mid-semester transition to online. Really passionate about the subject and explains things clearly. The issue is that he is a pretty harsh grader and no matter how much I think I know the material his tests always leave me feeling confused. Excellent grading curve though.
Probably the worst chemistry professor you'll ever take. His grading is unusually harsh and does not seem to care how students are doing. If the averages are so low, there must be something wrong with the teaching, not the students. If you can take any other professor, don't take this guy. He made chemistry the hardest class of my whole schedule.
Hes always bothered. Tried getting help in office hours and made me feel dumb. Says things like you dont know this? when asking for help. But you cant complain because hes one of the department heads. Dont take him.
One of the least empathetic professors out here during the pandemic. Makes chemistry way more torturous than it needs to be.
Although Dr. Casalnuovo is very knowledgable in chem and a nice man, he is very tough. Exams were more difficult than practice questions and questions from the book. Make sure you study off lectures because he will pull random questions from that. He makes concepts more difficult than they have to be.
I took him for the entire Chemistry series here at CPP In all honest he is one of the best professors I have had. Everything is clear and outlined. However you have to make sure you understand concepts of what he is teaching you. He gives past exams and quizzes as study aids. Not an easy A, but he does curve! TAKE HIM!!!
Extremely condescending and unhelpful. Rude during office hours despite encouraging you to attend them. Tests and quizzes only have a couple questions, which drop your grade enormously if you get one wrong. He curves, but he also spends the semester bragging about how many students he has failed in the past. Zoom lectures were unhelpful.
If you're a high achiever be prepared to be disappointed B) Insanely difficult to get an A in his class. Curve only affects low scores, bringing up the percentage required to get a C. 90% in his class is an A which again, is insanely difficult. Learned a lot, but really disappointed I could've taken a different prof and passed with an A.
Joseph himself isn't a bad person, I've been to his office hours pretty frequently and he has helped me with questions that I have from time to time. However, his method of teaching is very by the books/challenging and if you are looking to get an A in the class you have to study religiously. Save the headache if you can and find another professor.
Casalnuovo's online course set up was horrible. Hours of pre-lecture videos then his zooms were just the repetition of the videos. Shames you for not asking questions. Tests are nothing like the homework, and there are very little questions on his exams. Notes were too much to understand in given time. Curves due to his average failing scores.
I took Dr. C for CHM1210 and CHM1220 during the pandemic, and he's definitely one of the best chemistry professors I've ever had. It helps to have previous exposure to chemistry, but as long as you study/ watch the lectures/put in the effort you'll be okay. I don't understand why he gets so many complaints- he gave me a solid foundation in chem.
If you don't know the basics and ask him a question he will call you out infant of the class. He can be rude I had friends going to his private office hour to ask him question and then he would bring up the fact that "some of you guys still don't know...". He does not treat students in a nice way. He teaches good. But personality 0/10. Hard quizzes
He is DISREsPECTFUL. Idk how he is still Professor at cpp. He makes students feel bad for asking him questions. He expects everyone to know the basics. He has trust issues. He does not meet the right criteria to be a professor. The whole time I was in his class I had anxiety. And he encourages students to snitch on each other. Not RECOMMENDED
His class is really difficult. Hard lectures that you only would understand them if you attend to his classes and ask him questions. But when you ask him questions he makes you feel stupid. Disrespectful.
WARNING!!! dont take his classes hes a tough teacher. all he does is wanna catch people cheat. even if you werent to cheat hell accuse you of cheating.
he is an awful professor. he expects people to know the basics and not everyone knows the basics. be ready to watch videos before class. he doesnt teach during his lectures he just goes over the videos he makes you watch. he brags all the time about how many people failed the class and how hes caught people cheating. dont take his class.
He has Trust issues. He casually thinks students are cheating in his class and he accuse students of cheating for no reason. He is also disrespectful.
Terrible prof. Accuses students of cheating for absolutely no reason, and he will report you after and ensure you fail. He only has a synchronous class to catch people cheating which he literally tries to flex, and he just makes us learn on our own. If you answer a question wrong or ask one he will make you feel stupid - don't take his class.
TERRIBLE. He constantly accuses people of cheating. His teaching is so bad that his class average is consistently UNDER 60% on exams and quizzes. His entire class would get Fs if he didnt do a heavy curve. He also constantly acts like his students are dumb, and acts extremely condescending. WOULD NOT RECOMEND TO ANYONE.
(SPRING 2020) Gives his own printed lecture notes. Doesn't use Blackboard/Canvas, instead uses his own website for course-related information. Will adjust grades based on the class/test average. Sometimes he'll crack wise or give a sarcastic answer when asked a question- don't take it too personally. Otherwise, I learned a lot from his class.
Dr. C wasnt that bad. Pro is that the lowest you can get is a C since he assigns grades based of class average. However,he is intimidating by making you turn on your camera and is strict with cheating. Even if it wasnt intentional, hell fail you. However, he did a good job explaining complex concepts and was helpful through email if u needed help
You should be fine as long as you do the homework and take notes in class. Tends to not throw curveballs in quizzes and midterms of things never mentioned in class. Class isn't the hard to pass, there's only one curve at the very end and it's pretty big. Don't set your expectations too high in grades.
He is a really great teacher for chemistry. He gives you lecture packets to follow along with the lecture video notes and the online assignments are really easy. Overall, you just need to practice solving the word problems and understanding the concepts. It's not too difficult and he gives feedback and lets you ask questions during class time.
This was the worst professor I ever had at Cal Poly Pomona. He never wanted to answer questions and was unwilling to help. The grading criteria started from a 0 and built up. This course is fine to take if your a chemistry major because the way he teaches requires a background. If no DONT TAKE. He's sooo meann ahhhh
Even though I got a good grade in his class but im warning you this professor is delusional. I took him for credit and he failed half of the class. He has attitude. He will make you feel stupid for not knowing some basic infos. he automatically believes students cheat. he is rude and bad behavior. he doesn't even smile. SUPER TOUGH EXAMS.HARD GRADR
Just do not take him. Worst professor I've ever take in cpp. he teaches good. But his exams are 10 times harder. he is hard grader with attitude. CPP honestly need to find a better professor.
do not take him. Worst mistake of my life. I hate him and his lectures. Super rude. his classes are terrible. If you want a good grade for easy level course like this do not take him.The average in his hard exams are below 60 sometimes even 50%. which I heard that's how it is in ochem and it shouldn't be like this in basic level chem.
He will make you dumb with alot of attitude. such a bad personality. his teaching is not bad but when it comes to personality... terrible. His exams are really tough. alot harder than his lectures. Do not ask question in his lectures or he will make you feel dumb. I don't recommend taking him. there are better professors than him.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR unless you were an ap student in hs. This professors lectures are good but everything else is awful, he's great at teaching but EXTREMELY strict in terms of grading and cheating. Don't memorise your periodic table values because he changes them and will call you out for cheating if you use memorized ones. iDon't recommend
Dr. C is a spectacular professor. Chemistry is generally hard but he makes it as easy as he can. Homework is online and can be a bit janky but is mostly easy. Tests and quizzes are manageable with some studying. The class is also curved to the average so it's easier to do good.
Dr. C was an alright professor. His quizzes and exams were very straightforward. Any questions that you had could be answered in class to the best of his abilities. The only real problem was that he did not post any indicator or reminders of when homework was due on Canvas or in emails, which made tracking what is due difficult.
Class is graded on homework, quizzes, 3 midterms, and the final. Homework is long. There's no reminders for assignments, so make sure to stay on track with it. Practice quizzes/midterms before the actual thing, and it's very helpful if you do them. Go to class!! Lecture videos online, and practice problems during lectures. Responsive to emails.
Took him for CHM 1210L and was pretty alright. Lab reports and pre-lab reports are due at the very beginning of class (no late work for pre-labs). There are quizzes at the beginning of each lab that are not hard if you watch the video that he posts each week (35 mins average; ~15 mins with 2x speed). Grades hard on sig-figs but overall nice guy.
doesn't deserve to be a professor, this professor made notes 20 years ago and since then has been using them. He act like he doesn't want to be there and make you feel terrible about anything you do. I sincerely feel sorry for you if he is the only one available.
Avoid if you can lmao. Nice guy but his way of teaching isnt really effective, no lectures you have to watch videos before class. Lots of memorization and attendance is basically mandatory because you get quizes on the video everyday.
i have never disliked a professor more in my life, dreaded going to this class everyday and he was such a scrooge to be around. avoid taking him at all costs, he doesn't care about his students and just sits there during labs doing nothing while students are struggling and aside from that, he's a tough grader.
Tests are impossible, coursework is comically unfair. He is perfectly happy having a 50% class average. This is an awful professor
I do not have experience with him in a lecture class, but he was a good lab professor. He writes the lab manual and has a very specific way of doing reports, he is a tough grader, but he tells you this. Also has a 5% participation subjective part of your grade. Has weekly pre-lab videos that will have quizzes on.
Fire professor overall, lot of work and it's difficult but the class average gets rounded to a C+ but you won't know your grade until it's in your transcript but he'll tell you your scores on all assignments and return them and also what the average is so you can estimate your letter grade. HW is free, Pearson is just annoying
This class is difficult, but that is to be expected since it's the barrier to entry for OChem. Test material will primarily come from lecture notes and end of lecture problems (so you should attend lectures until they end). The material can get hard sometimes but Dr. C is accessible outside of class and is a friendly person to talk about it with.
The way he teaches made understanding chemistry hard. There's quizzes every lecture class and he only gives 0 or full points. He leaves Mastering Chemistry to teach you most things, which takes a % away every time you get it wrong and only 6 attempts, which only lowers your overall grade. Passing seems impossible.
Passing seems impossible, he leaves mastering chemistry for practice however it will deduct a percentage anytime you get the wrong answer. You will have quiz every lecture meeting and he does not give any partial credit. He also does not accept late homework, so you will get a zero if you miss the deadline.
You will definitely learn in his class. That's all that matters. He is accessible outside lectures; fast email replies. Fast grader. Online lectures make it super easy to learn. If you are willing to learn, you WILL learn in this class.
Best chem lab instructor possible. Some TA's are very terrible at teaching, but this professor knows whats up.
Last semester took 1220 lecture I will say this there was 150 students in the course, when it came down 2 weeks left till the final there was 25 students left, he says if your struggling to reach out to him and ask question he just tells you look at the lecture notes and its in the book, this teacher has a joy of failing students, i stuck it out
No clue why anyone would give him a single good rating. He doesn't teach in the actual class, he'll give you a confusing online video instead. Be prepared to self-study a lot, cause he's handing out quizzes and exams practically every week. This guy expects you to spend hours on a GE course, so start canceling plans and buy some tissue boxes.
he made me want to switch out of chemistry
He is honest about his workload and states at the beginning of the course that CHM 1210 is a commitment. I was worried at first about taking this class with him but he ended up being so nice as I was one of the only ones to show up to office hours, and talk with him after class. I could have received a better grade if I remembered to do homework…
He has it all lined out from day 1. You will have to put time into the class, if you do put in time early in the semester you'll be saved from pain down the line. He has a video lecture you need to watch before each class ranging from 30 minutes to an hour, and he has one question quizzes before each class about the lecture video.
Whole course (including TEST & QUIZ) is laid out day-by-day in canvas. Assigns videos in place of lecturing and class is for questions and practice. Sometimes there is 1 Q quizlet on the video. Forces you to memorize a ridiculous amount of numbers and names. Excessive homework that penalizes for incorrect answers. Grades very hard on test & quiz.
It's like he's perfectly fine watching his students struggle and fail while he tries to make the material as challenging as he can. This is a gen ed class; not every student is going pursue chemistry, so there's no point to twist the knife every exam. Would not* take again.
This professor was awful, he makes you watch up to an hour and a half long video before the lecture, all the material is super hard and very wordy. you must memorize multiple charts and equations. Beginning of class most of the time there is a one question quiz on something random that happened in the video. I've never wanted to drop out more.
VERY tough to keep up with this class. Each lab day had a quiz, and the previous weeks assignment due, and assignments passed back that were graded TOUGH. Tbh this class destroyed my will to live with how anxiety inducing it was. However the professor himself is very nice, its just his policies are very strict. Do not take if not locked in on chem
Stupidly difficult for a GE. Took his lab as well and the workload was insane. Lots and lots of notes and made chemistry my least favorite subject.
Respectfully, if you are reading this and considering taking the class, take another professor. Class is passable but impossible to get an A or maybe even B. Class average will be curved to a C, everyone is struggling together at like a 60 percent. Grading is harsh. No late work, miss class no makeup even for quizzes or midterms. Good luck.
Pray. Hide. Run. I was so nervous for the final I started throwing up. Only good thing is that he grades depending on the average, so pray the average is low. Lec vids are posted on canvas, usually 30-60 min and must be watched before class so you can do the "quizlet" (4 pt, 1 question) at the start of class. Tutor everyday to pass. Save yourself.
Honestly, he has his entire schedule on what the test, midterms, and finals are going to be. It is ENCOURAGED to watch his videos, because he that's the lectures. Although some topics may be vague, that's the point of office hours. The exams and quizzes are quite hard, but he does stop and asked if we need to ask questions each page of the notes.
He's not as bad as people say he is. He does Quizlet for every lecture class, to make sure you watch his videos, and quizlets are worth the same as quizzes. He exams can be a bit tricky, but doesn't throw any curve balls. Honestly, just watch his videos, do the HW, do his practice qjuizzes/exams, go to office hours if necessary.
The Chem lab is extremely difficult only because he is a tough grader. If you are not understanding anything, I suggest going to his office hours because I found it easier to work one on one. The quizzes are also difficult so beware to study for them before class. Overall, he is not a bad professor but the time/effort I put into a GE is absurd.
Not as bad as people make him out to be. In all honesty just watch the videos and ask questions on what you don't understand. No reason you should not pass this class unless you do not put the effort in.
He says the practice quizzes and midterms he has posted online are just like the real tests, but then he subs out half the questions for new ones on the actual test. Wastes lecture re-teaching material he forced you to watch (pre recorded lecture is nice to have though). Doesn't have a designated schedule for mastering chem/it's not synced w canvas
Just drop the course and get another professor, hes a tough grader and if you have other hard classes to study for, he will not make your life easier. You will need to study and he gets overstimulated when you ask him a question but you can tell he likes what he does but it shouldn't be that hard. Just drop it save yourself the money and TIME.
honestly shocked that this professor has such bad reviews. he is very clear with what he expects and is willing to work with you, you just have to be the one to reach out ofc. the curve in his class is spectacular, which may lead you to believe he's a bad lecturer but he's really not, the content is just challenging. overall a great professor
Encourages his students to attend his office hours and his lectures are a different than most professors, but I prefer it because we can rewatch what was taught and he gives us dedicated time to really understand the material. He does offer practice tests, but they are to understand the concepts but not the exact test which is very understandable.
The professor is not a bad person himself, but the way he teaches is just not good, at least for me. Lectures are mandatory and he has quizlets every morning. He makes you watch the lecture yourself, which can take up to around 3 hours sometimes, and he then goes over that same stuff in class... which was pointless and made this class too stressful
Forces you to watch hour long videos before class and you take a Quizlet on a small detail from that lecture. Treats his class as if it's your only class you need to study for. Requires you to memorize many formulas and equations otherwise you will be punished. Only take if you have a light schedule.
He was a nice but literally the worst professor I have ever had for lab. He never actually taught anything just made you watch videos and wouldn't really go over what we had to do in lab, just very briefly. I would avoid him at all costs, if you have another option to take a different lab TAKE IT. Also, very picky on what he wants too.
