he is very good about not really taking sides in class debates, and he covers some very touchy subjects
Professor Dymond is a great professor. He is very objective in class and is really big on class discussion. He's always availble outside of class for help. A great professor!
He has an interesting class with an emphasis on discussion, but he often doesn't know what he is talking about and explains concepts that he doesn't undertsand highly inaccurately. It is an easy class, though. Read and attend lecture most of the time?
awesome class and awesome professor. need to attend class because most lectures are based on material not in the book. really nice guy, loves class discussions and really easy to talk with.
A great professor. Take this class if you want to discuss controversial issues in a classroom enviornment. Clear lectures and a reasonable reading load.
the class has been fine and pretty interesting. the midterm and final are directly from lectures. I found class discussions interesting but got tired of copying notes directly from his power point slides
He is awesome! Take this class. Joe is so nice and easy.
He isn't easy, but is very interesting and I thoroughly enjoy his class. Go to all the lectures . . . they are interesting and 90% of exam material comes from there. The exams are slightly difficult, but the class was worth it.
this guy is so calm he must be on tranquilizers. one of the nicest people you will encounter and the class is definately interesting. the stuff you learn here will actually stick with you
Very interesting professor. Go to class - just reading the books won't get you a passing grade on exams. Group project at the end of the class was a bummer, though.
this professor is awesome. he really loves the subject, and wants his students to as well. the class is not an easy A if you are just looking for an easy A, you do have to read and attend class regularly. if you do that, though, its not hard at all to get an A. amazing professor, even at 8 am
Outstanding professor. Readings were relevant and not excessive, class discussions were second to none, and tests were manageable. Essay topic was interesting. Class attendance and discussion is mandatory for an A. One complaint, he's so guarded and reserved that sometimes he seems standoffish.
I LOVE THIS MAN. He is extremely clear in lecture and involves the whole class in discussions which makes it interesting. Lecture attendance is definitely necessary... but he will make you want to go. Definitely recommend this class!
The class lectures are very interesting. However, the tests are very difficult in a way that most questions are tricky, unfair and misleading. Most of the questions are opinionated with no right answers. The professor wasn't very receptive to criticism and seemed unhelpful.
amazing, taking an 8 am with him thats not required because i love him so much
Amazing class. Attendance is mandatory as many test questions come from lectures and class discussions. Also, he looks like Indiana Jones :)
One of the coolest profs I've ever had. His enthusiasm and clarity are only surpassed by his ability to dress. But watch our for his tests: his multiple choice questions are very hard and sometimes unclear and cloudy. His class is great, his tests are not. This is coming from a Geography Major.
Really interesting, great lectures. The exams are hard and you pretty much have to go to class because thats where the exam questions come from. Great class though!!
Calmest person...ever. Very nice, but lectures are long. The tests are very hard and all multiple choice, sometimes with an essay, but the majority of his class is graded on mult. choice tests, quizzes, etc., with hard questions. But really good guy. Interesting subjects.
I had him in the fall semester and i was interested in the class. the only reason i never made it there was the fact that it was so far away on the other side of gw at 8 am plus im handicapped which doesnt help. He's easygoing and really calm. If you like hyper teachers then he aint for you.
AMAZING PROFESSOR! Take this class or any other with this Professor, he is intelligent and his lectures are great!
he is very clear, nice and not difficult. willing to help and reading is not necessary. i did not think the tests were that hard.
Really good professor. He's an interesting lecturer, and it's not that hard of a class.
Great professor!!!! His interest in the field is obvious and the lectures are always interesting. He wants ou to love the class. Tests are not that bad either (but the readings are a must).
Dymond is a cool guy and a good professor but his multiple choice questions suck! They are really unclear even though it doesnt seem like hes trying to be. He grades essays pretty leniently, but you need it after the awful MC questions. If you have to take political geography he's okay but the class could def be better and more interesting.
This class was pretty interesting for an intro. take anything with him, he's a great teacher-one of the best at GW
all around an easy class to get a B (and im a slacker) go to lecture and take notes b/c the majority of the tests are based on these. still do some reading. map quizes are easy if u study a lil bit. the review sheet for the test is very helpful. nice guy and good class to take if u need it as a requirement
overall, an easy class - his lectures are interesting. you need to read, although there isnt much and its not hard. you must come to class bc his tests come from lectures with some book input. a v. nice guy and gets along with students ps. he is v. sexy ;)
Professor Dymond was a really good professor. He only uses powerpoint, but his slides are usually good. He has pictures he took from around the world on them. Human Geography was very interesting. The tests were easy if you go to the lectures and read the book. He is a nice guy and very down to earth, no pun intended. Take this professor!!
good teacher. very organized and structured lectures and assignments. just follow the guidelines. minimal effort needed to get an A.
skim the readings and memorize everything he says in class. if you do this, the tests are easy. prof. dymond is a good speaker and makes an effort to be available to his students. very laid back and has good anecdotal stories about the traveling he's done.
Dymond's Geo 120 class should have been easy. He says he's not out to trick students but his questions are misleading, intentional or not. The textbook, which he contributes to, is horribly written and lectures can be tedious. This class is based on subjective exams in which minute details of reading and lecture are tested. Not recommended.
Do not let the geog. majors fool you. While you may think prof. dymond is a nice guy, he is not. His tests are extremely tricky, and his "pop" quizes are way too detailed oriented. Be very careful before you sign up for one of his classes.
Lectures are clear and the textbook reading he assigns is very straightforward. Just read over the lectures and do the textbook reading and you'll be fine. The tests are a little difficult but very simply if you read the questions and take your time. C'mon people, it's college, he's trying to make sure you're learning what you're expected to know!
Great professor. Knows his stuff and is very detail oriented in a good way. Test are difficult, but not impossible. Make sure you pay attention to everything from the lecture and the book. Only use book for exam study. Make sure you read articles when assigned- quizzes are the only unfair part. Great class tho!
Great professor. Tests are hard, but overall i learned so much from this class it was worth it. take it if you are interested in world issues/current events!
Hated his class. He had his favorites, and a HUGE bias against the Iraq war that was offensive. I didn't learn as much as I thought I would. His exams are hard and he is difficult to get ahold of takes days to respond to emails. Sorry I'm the average American who hasn't traveled the world-the class was filled with the typical GW spoiled brats
Prof. Dymond's class is really interesting, and fairly stress free. You need to go to lecture, and do the assigned reading, but if you do you should have no problem getting an A in the class. I really enjoyed having him as a professor. Take him.
Great teacher, really enjoys the subject and class it fun with good discussions. Test are not that hard. Make sure you read the text book and GO TO CLASS! If you do these two things you will be fine, almost no homework and not much studying required but I learned alot. Human geography is GREAT!
Great class, great professor, great sweaters. Not too hard to get an A if you go to lectures. They're interesting though so it's not bad, and there are lots of discussions which are fun. I highly recommend this class, and JD is a bit of eye candy too.
I LOVED Joe Dymond's class!! You have to do the assigned readings and go to lecture, but the class isn't difficult. Tests can be tricky at times. Interesting discussions & material. JD ROCKS!
I know he's gotten tons of raves but I had to add one more. I love Joe Dymon and switched my minor to Geo because of him! Read the book, go to lecture (you will want to), and study for an hour or so before the tests and you'll get an A. Plus, he's passionate and fun (and very handsome).
Yes he's attractive, and yes the subject he's teaching is generally interesting, but past the introductory level courses the man doesn't teach. Classes become unfocused and frustrating, and he's a ridiculously hard grader. He may be a "nice guy" but that doesn't make for a good class.
Oh my god. Loved this class and Dymond (very handsome older man) - I may double major in Geog now and had no prior interest in it.. There are 3 non cumulative tests and some easy hw assignments, going to class is more important than reading (but I reccommend reading highly)...I did all my work and barely missed class and an A was not hard to get.
Great class! Very interesting, learn about the whole world in one semester. Test can be hard but just read and go to class it will be fine, he always makes the last test easy. Map quizes are very easy the one homework was alot of fun, great class great teacher, made me like geography and I might minor in it now. TAKE this class.
This is the worst class that I have taken at GW.His tests are extremely hard yet trivial tests(he claims to be all about the big picture, which is not true at all. The book is interesting; however, lectures come directly from the readings in super boring power point form. He also is extremely condescending and self righteous. Avoid him at all cost.
Dymond is by far the best professor GWU has to offer. Geography majors take the seminar with him! He so knowledgeable about the subject and really just wants his students to have fun. He is easy on the grading and deadlines. Again best professor GW has to offer!
I took World Regions and Problems with him, and he is a good lecturer. Have to go to class to get the powerpoints though. Tests are easy if you take good notes, as he gives you easy throwaway questions. Makes things fun, interesting. As the semester goes on, his personality opens up and you realize he actually does love geography.
AMAZING professor! This was my first Geography class and I loved it. He made classes interesting, entertaining, and pleaseant to go to. He is very clear and really knows his stuff, he obviously loves Geography. Going to class is important, take detailed notes and you'll be fine. He's pretty funny too and a cool teacher, so take him if you can.
Dymond loves Geography, he's an easy going guy, and he was always telling fun stories. However, his tests are written to trick, not judge knowledge. Ex: every answer choice would have several parts and all parts of each answer would be true except for one. I didn't miss a class, sat in the front, took notes, did my work, read and I got a B.
He is a pretty easy teacher. He is straightforward. But he reminds me of Professor Lockhart from Harry Potter in many ways.
Really nice guy. Tests are pretty straight forward, take notes and you should get an A. Atlas project was a little weird, but it was his first one and he graded so easy, but that is probably going to change so heads up. Lectures are clear but he likes discussion in a class of 100, and that can slow things down. Overall though he one of the best.
Prof. Dymond is the best! Such a nice guy, really interesting material and not too heavy a workload. Tests are easy as long as you go to lecture and grading isn't bad at all. Take his class!
This class is fantastic! He keeps the lectures interesting and likes to have big class discussions. The tests are harder than you expect but once you take the first and learn how he tests it becomes easy. 3 Tests worth 22.5% and then 3 map quizes and a homework assignment worth the remaining % of your grade. GREAT CLASS.
This class is worthless, I learned nothing. He treats students like children, and expects nothing from them (which is a double edged sword). The discussion sessions were an exercise in futility, and the TAs had no room to discuss their interests, but had to stick with the inane questions the profesor required them to ask.
First test had a lot of material from the book that no one would ever think was important to remember. The second and third tests were easier than that, though reading the book was still important. After the first test, though, he told us what material from the class and textbook would be on the test, and things got pretty easy.
Excellent professor, would take again in a heartbeat. Inspired me to minor in geography.
I think some raters below got a little too excited. He is likable and smart but the World Regional course wasnt' great. It was all over the place and the stuff you learn is useless. Thats fine if a course is easy but i didn't think it was. He seemed unclear in lecture and the readings were unrelated to lecture. He wasn't the worst but wasn't great.
Great guy, took this class for credit. He does a great job making lectures apply to students of all concentrations and majors. I really appreciate how he learns the names of each of his students. Shows that he cares about them. Lectures can be dull and boring at time, but he makes up for it with his down-to-earth view about school.
Joe is a nice guy, but LatAm Geography was dry and boring. As a Latin American Studies major, I was expecting the class to be a lot more detailed than it was. The second half of the class was hardly focused on Geography at all, and I did not really feel as though it was worth my time. An easy A, but I wouldn't recommend if it's not mandatory.
Hardly any writing for a WID course and compared to non-WID courses I have taken at GW. Dymond challenged the students to think and share their thoughts on the readings. If you do not participate or speak your grade will suffer. I did not do to well on the 1 test we had but groups projects are easy and fun.
Dymond is an amazing professor! All of his lectures are thoroughly detailed, and very interesting. He uses his own experience in his lectures which make them fun to follow! He is also super hot, but the tests can be difficult if you dont prepare enough or go to class.
He is a good professor. He is interested in what he is teaching and interested what his students have to say. You can tell he knows what he is talking about.
Fantastic, one of the most intelligent professors I have taken at GW. Political Geography was 2 tests, research page paper, terrorist group project, and participation. Lots of reading is assigned, and a lot of it is pretty dense but he makes it obvious which ones are going to be emphasized on the test. If you put in the work an A/A- is possible
One of the best professors I've ever had. Would definitely recommend. You need to go to lectures - he doesn't post all of his lecture slides.
Professor Dymond makes a large lecture class work like it was one with 20 students. Very engaging and interesting topic. He lays out what he expects and basically tells you what will be on the test, so listen! Make sure to take good notes, even the examples.
Dymond is a great professor! Textbook reading is mandatory, because he does ask questions on the tests. Lectures are mandatory. Tests are pretty easy, I barely studied. He engages the entire lecture hall
This class is so interesting and Professor Dymond makes it this way. He is very engaging and in a class of 160 students he is really down to earth and makes the class feel small. If you participate frequently he will make it a point to learn your name. Overall, he is really just a great, funny guy who does a fantastic job teaching the course.
Loved this class!
I highly recommend him. Even though it is an intro class with a lot of basic terms and definitions he makes it fun and interesting by throwing in case studies, pictures and stories from places he has traveled to. Actually most of the pictures he shows he took himself which is really cool. Overall it's not a tough class as long as you show up.
Easy intro class if you show up and take notes. Tests are 70% things discussed in class 30% readings (so do the readings if you want an A). The material is fairly easy yet also interesting and he often has personal stories that he tells in class. Participate and he will learn your name. Easy class for an Intro as well as interesting. I recommend.
Show up, take notes, do the readings and you'll fly by. Participate in class and he'll like you a lot. Tests are fairly easy and have extra credit questions. Some group projects and reading quizzes, but he always gives enough of a heads-up. Super chill guy that loves when people ask questions. Looking forward to taking another of his classes.
Professor Dymond is a good professor, but his tests are SO specific, which makes it really difficult to get an A. Map quizzes are easy and straight forward. Homeworks are really easy. Do the work and you can do well as long as you do well on the test. A B is really easy, A need some studying.
Dymond and his class are the reason I am minoring in Geography. Engaging lectures, even with a big lecture class, and homework assignments are done in groups. Tests are specific, as he will ask questions from the boxed readings within the chapter, but if you read the text and show up to class, there's no reason you shouldn't get an A.
I took Prof Dymond for World Regional Geog and I thought I was going to get a B because his first exam seemed really hard. I went to office hours and talked to him and ended up getting an A. He's really a great teacher. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!
Professor Dymond is really knowledgeable about cultural geography. Participation matters. 2 group projects, a group paper and a midterm. The midterm is hard but the rest of the grades help to even it out.
The most clear and straight forward lectures I've ever received at GW. Dymond is very respectful s and is overall a genuine professor. He doesn't ever use blackboard making it easy to forget about assignments and/or be oblivious to how you're doing in the class. His exams are VERY hard so go to class and pay attention. Not an easy A.
The questions he asks on his quizzes are irrelevant to the subject of geography.
Don't take his class. He does not give out notes/PPTs covered during lecture. So if you don't take good notes, you will fail. He gives out quizzes. Per one quiz, about 40-50 pages of reading is assigned. Yes, for one quiz. Just don't take his class. He is the worst of all I've ever met.
Great class if you already have a decent general knowledge of geography. Prof. Dymond loves participation but doesn't grade on it. The quizzes, which luckily don't matter that much, are really poorly written. The tests are more straightforward, based on lectures and videos, and the textbook. The tests will mostly determine your grade.
Professor Dymond is so chill! This class was not stressful and had a chill atmosphere. Only 3 tests, which were really easy, a few quizzes on readings, and one homework assignment. Basically everything said in lecture is on the test, so you need to come to class. I would definitely recommend taking this class or any other classes from him!
Very straightforward! Tests are very doable and not too stressful. They're based on the lectures so you have to go to class and take notes! He loves listening to what people have to say, and he makes sure that everyone is engaged in a 100+ class. Overall, 3 tests (including the final), 3 reading quizzes, and one simple homework assignment.
Overall, enjoyed the class. What irritated me was that the quizzes (we only had 3; 5-10 q's each) counted as much as an exam. I got 6/10 on the first quiz (100's on the rest) and averaged an A on all my exams and couldn't get an A because of the first quiz. Tests are generally easy if you read the textbook and go to class; workload very manageable.
I took this class as a G-PAC requirement and really enjoyed it. His lectures are engaging and informative, but as he will tell you, his tests are difficult. Your grade includes 3 exams, a few quizzes, and a project, so it's important to be prepared for the quizzes and exams. He does provide extra credit on the exams which helps.
This professor is amazing. Everyone who blames him for tough grading or doing poorly on his tests and quizzes has nothing to do with him and more with the amount of effort they put into the class. He is tough grader and expects alot out of his students so that they might actually learn something and not just BS.
This class lacks any kind of cohesive theme, and instead is a series of photo-heavy powerpoints in which he seems to discuss different aspects of Latin American countries at random. The disjointed and haphazard nature makes it extremely difficult to do well on his exams which consist of ridiculously and needlessly detail specific questions.
Great professor, 10/10. Criticisms that people went were pretty unwarranted.
One of the best professors I have ever had.
He was one of the best profs in the entire university. I'm lucky to have had him 4 times. He will be missed. May he rest in peace.
