Hysterical guy. Knows how to keep an 8:30 class awake.
explains material and makes psychology fun
GREAT teacher. Don't pass him up.
Great, engaging teacher but scary in person!! Makes you feel like you're being scrutinized.
I really enjoyed his class. Fun lectures and I learned a good deal.
My favorite teacher ever.
Funny and intelligent guy! Knows his stuff and how to convey his knowledge to his students.
Hilarious, engaging, and really full of energy!
wow, he kept me awake at 8:30. tooo funny! really knows his stuff too.
Had him 8:30 in the morning and he kept me up. Very enthusatic and has great stories. Entertaing. However, if you have a question it is hard to approach him because he directs you to TAs.

He's the reason I'm no longer a psychology major AND transferred out of DePaul. STAY AWAY!

Good stories...thats about it.
Very energetic and dedicated to his material. I would take him again for sure
Very energetic and animated! Great professor and knows his stuff well. His laugh reminds me of Alf, complete with the hand slap.
He is soooooo funny, definately worth taking. Every class was like going to a comedy club. Test are not difficult as long as you come to class, gives easy extra credit.
Ferrari is an awesome man. Personally, if I can get by without wasting my time going to class to listen to someone who's only going to talk about what I already read, I will. But even after reading everything in his class, I looked forward to Social Psych. Dr. Ferrari is worth every second you have.
Awesome teacher. If you read you'll do well in his class. Gives EASY extra credit on tests, and outside tests. Actually congratulates you if you do well on tests (believes in positive reinforcement). Very fun class and interesting! Take him if you can.
Extremely funny professor and is willing to give A's if you're willing to do the little amount of work required. A lot of easy extra credit. He can be mean and condescending, but rarely. Doesn't give you a break for night classes though, which sucks. Otherwise an awesome teacher and good class.

The meanest professor ever! Makes ignorant comments in class and thinks its so funny. However, he explains class material well and if you get a b+ or better he will congrat you. But he's such a jerk I would never take him again!

he is rude and self centered. forget about compasion with this guy.... if you can avoid him, do it at all cost. you have been warned.
His TA lost my essay, and he accused me of not writing one at the exam- wasnt helpful in solving the missing essay problem, only assumed I didnt do it. Tests are full of questions that come from nowhere because he spends class telling stories and not talking about the material. funny stories though.

He was quite arrogant and told stories that did not relate to the class. He screwed me over on an extra credit assignment and he knew it too. He basically told me he wasn't going to fix it because life isn't fair sometimes. I ended up not getting the A I deserved in the class. He was such a jerk about it too.
I had this instructor for a summer class. We never referred to the book although you will see questions about the reading assignments on tests. The tests are curved and difficult. Go to class even though attendance is not required. He often rewards students for being there. If you have questions, he is not helpful or personable.
I had him for social psych. He gave 3 exams with easy extra credit. He also offered extra credit in addition to the exams. The exams were straight forward, if you go to class there is no way you shouldnt get an A. If you dont go to class but study on your own, you can definately pull off a B.
I was sorry I had to pay for this class! Despite the fact that he makes it easy to get an A (lots of extra credit), he always digresses in class. Talks about everything under the sun, and speeds through the relevant material. What I learned in this class, I learned from the book, not him.
he makes the Psych Dept at DeP the best program there. Entertaining & enlightening.
what a GREAT professor - not easy, but helps you learn. I think stands our among all the Psych faculty at DeP, maybe the University.... worth taking.
One of my favorite profs so far in the psych department! he does tend to go off on tangents, but always relates it back to the subject. He is always full of energy and made me actually want to go to class
awesome - totally. very helpful; funny yet educational; wish the Psy Dept had more like him. what else does he teach?
Funny guy, makes psychology fun and is really clear with his powerpoint notes. We didn't have midterms, only Exams but if you bomb the 2 exams you can retake them and then he takes your highest grade and there's final exam. That's it!
Great professor. Funny, makes an 8:30 class seem not so horrible. Tests are pretty easy, but even if you do badly on them you can retake the first 2. As long as you pay attention in class you'll do fine, I got As on the tests and I barely skimmed through the textbook.
wow - previous person must not have done well! This guy is awesome and helpful and funny and knowledgeable and the best prof I have had at DePaul in the past 2 years! his information and style is engaging. HIGHLY recommend. and if you don't do well, consider something you are doing - don't quickly blame Dr J!
best professor ever, seriously
tests are difficult, and not like the book material, Tricky questions on test
Do not take, he is horrible, stupid jokes throughout class that are not funny, can't believe he has tenure
seems like someone did not study! my friends and I who prepared from the guides he gave us did well. hmmmm, maybe you need some help in college??
person who HATES class == why are you still in it? you are half way through it, so why didn't you drop after the first or second class instead of staying so long - if his jokes are so bad. I think he gives real world examples, with real world application, with real world funny comments. What world are you from! :)
Horrible. He is often rated well, especially by Intro students because they simply don't know what he says is BS. He believes it and if you didn't know any better why would you question a tenured teacher. There is a reason why no one in the Psych department wants to be associated with him. He is easy but if you take him keep your BS meter on high.
He is an arrogant windbag. He doesn't listen or answer students' questions and dismisses any information that contradicts or conflicts with his own opinion. Frequently lies to class about test materials. Didn't matter when information was presented proving that he lied to his students about the contents of the final because of his tenure.
I just finished the 2nd class with him. Maybe bec I am an adult student I find him amazing. He is informative, engaging, and approachable. Great sense of humor and NOT easy. NEVER found him 'to lie.' What is that about? Take and make your own opinion is my view.
ONE OF THE WORST PSYCHOLOGY PROFESSORS AT DEPAUL THE PEOPLE THAT GAVE HIM GOOD FEEDBACK GOT A GOOD GRADE BECAUSE THEY KISSED HIS ASS AS SOON AS HE COMES IN THE DOOR, NOT BECAUSE OF THEIR TEST RESULTS. HORRIBLE PROFESSOR
I had him for 105 [Intro 1], 106 [Intro 2], now 347 [Social Psy]. I would take all my psych classes with him. He is funny, informative, kind, and makes you think. He cares if you learn. I did not get all As; that is not why I am in college. Dr Ferrari is one of the best Psych profs at DePaul -- at least that is what the majors all say.
I took Dr J's class this summer; wow - amazing prof. funny but educational. he made us laugh at ourselves and life as we learned the material. this is the way all profs should be, and he is someone you should take for PSY at DePaul.
As long as you go and get the lecture notes you should be fine. He tries to make lots of jokes but is really bad at it, and he's kinda of an ass. The class is intersting though and he keeps your entertained.
I am finishing this class in a couple of weeks, and I will miss it. It was hard getting up at 8am, but Dr J's morning 'welcome' and his wonderful enthusiasm for psych and for US made it worthwhile. I highly recommend this instructor, and plan to take more Psych classes from him. He rocks!
He's very encouraging and keeps the class interested. Basically, you just need to GO TO CLASS and pay attention while you're there to do well. His lectures are important when it comes to tests. Plus, he REALLY doesn't like when people miss a lot of classes or often come late. He might single you out if you do that.
Great teacher, made me chose PSY as my major. He sometimes gets a little arrogant but that's becuase he rally knows what he's talking about. Only 3 quizes, no homework or papers. Quizes are pretty easy if you pay attention adn study, and he lets you retake the first two if you want. Great class really interesting.
just horrible, DO NOT TAKE
so annoying! this class put me in a bad mood every day. and he makes sexual jokes that make me uncomfortable
I'm in this class and don't find him saying nasty things - He's funny! He reaches out to all the students, and he covers interesting topics. I never understand it from students, if you don't like a professor == drop the class! why stay in it and complain??
He's very knowledgable about what he's talking about and has a lot of experience in the field, but he can sometimes come across a bit arrogant, intimidating, and insensitive. No homework or papers though, just three tests, which is nice unless you aren't a good test taker. He lets you re-take the first two if needed though, not bad overall.
BEST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD! Dr. Ferrari is full of energy, extremely hilarious, very knowledgable about the world of psychology, and can grab and hold your attention in the classroom. Some people might take his humor the wrong way, but overall he is an awesome professor and if you get the chance to take him, do it! You won't regret it!
I learned so much from him! He has so much energy and enthusiasm about psychology, and he's hilarious, so he's perfect to take for an early morning or night class! He gives you the option of re-taking either or both of the first two tests. I think that's awesome! He can be hard to get ahold of outside of class or if you need help, though.
He is really exciting to listen to, people that don't like him just don't cuz he is controversial (honest).
Great guy, is very helpful if you can get a hold of him. You must have a high level of humor for the class, but it makes the time you spend there more enjoyable. He means no harm if he makes a bad joke! Study, attend, engage and succeed!
Ferrari is very passionate about psychology and makes lectures fun. IF YOU DON'T LIKE EXAMS, or you are a "bad test taker". DO NOT take him. You're entire grade is made up of only 3 exams. No projects, no papers, just exams. However, he lets you retake exams 1 and 2. His outlines for exams somewhat inaccurate, which annoyed me.
As a person he is great. He is super passionate and fun to watch. Makes class very interesting. That being said, his grade does not reflect your knowledge of the material. He only does three exam (NOTHING ELSE). So it may not be right for everyone.
Dr. J is a great professor. Very energetic, knowledgeable, and hilarious. He is passionate about teaching and you'll learn a lot from him if you pay attention. Although the only grades in the class are from tests, he offers retake days. Be sure to study, as your grade relies only on 3 tests.
He is one of the best professors ever! Very interesting class! He makes an 8am class bearable. He has many funny stories that relates back to the material learned in class! I would definitely take his class again!
Favorite teacher at DePaul. Keeps class involved and interesting so it's a great morning class. Tests are of course based on the readings in the text book. There are three, each with one short answer, but he gives you the topics before the test. Very passionate and knowledgeable in his area of study. TAKE IT.
He is extremely entertaining. He teaches everything on a personal and funny level. He is the best professor in the psych department. The tests are easy and straightforward. He wants the students to get something out of lecture more than tests. Retakes are a yes. No book needed.
Class is interesting and he's entertaining (had him for night class), but he is a very egotistical man that talks about himself more often than not. He's not the clearest at explaining everything, so def get the book to read before exams as an aid to better understand the topics. Some ?s on exams are from text. Doesn't post slides so go to classes.
Dr. J is great! Many people don't like him but he keeps class interesting. I will definitely be taking his 347 class. The tests are easy if you pay attention and go over the notes.
Dr. J is FANTASTIC! His intro course is great (and easy: 3 exams, no hw/papers) and he is literally the funniest professor in the department I've had so far. He starts class off with fun facts and keeps your attention going all class. Take him for social psych too!!
Dr Ferrari is really knowledgeable and helpful. His class is both interesting and entertaining, he engages his students immediately. He knows what he's talking about and wants everyone to learn something and be able to take something away from his class. I will take him again if I have the opportunity.
just great - wish I took more with him
He's really hilarious! But, took him as a night class which was a mistake, lectures were too long for me to keep interest. Grade was based off of only 3 tests, which was really challenging for me. Also SO MUCH READING. I like him and I like psych but I didn't care for his course.
I took him for an evening class. Not at all boring for a 3-hours class. Makes a lot of jokes, gives music breaks and very clear study guide. Would take again!
So opinionated and bullheaded that he is unhelpful. Highly recommend you do NOT sign up for his course.
Ferrari is straightforward and clear-cut. He tells you exactly what he expects you to know- he gives study guides for exams. Three exams & no final. Exams were pretty easy if you do the review. He's very charismatic and makes the class laugh.
Dr. Ferrari is an amazing professor. He makes the class engaging. I took him for psych 105 and 106 and I would take him for all my courses if I could. 10/10 would recommend.
I took Dc. Ferrari for psych106 and I loved his class. He also talks about his real life experiences that I found very helpful. Only three exams and lets you do retakes. Just study for the exams. I would definitely take him again!
Overall a wonderful class! Dr. Ferrari is well educated and knows the material. If you put time and effort into your work you will do well in the class. Best part about this class is that its hands on learning and experience based.I wish I could take more of his classes.
Joe Ferrari is probably my favorite professor from the psych department so far. He is very passionate about psychology, especially the social aspect.
I had Dr. Ferrari for both PSY 105 and 106. He seemed to be nicer in 105. I feel like the information that he taught in 106 was less interesting to him so he did not enjoy teaching that subject as much.
Great professor! 3 exams and absolutely no homework. I would recommend taking him! He didn't take attendence either
He is an amazingly well rounded professor who is truly passionate about his teaching domain. His lectures are funny and full of real world context which makes the class a lot easier to remain attentive to.
I was not looking forward to having a three hour night class but this professor made it a lot more manageable than I thought it would be. The lectures were long but he made them interactive and funny. His tests may be hard for some so read the book, other than that, all around good professor.
Dr. Ferrari is very funny and entertaining, but his lectures can be a bit much for someone (like me) who isn't always in the mood to participate and just wants to go to lecture, take notes, and leave. The tests were easy and he'll even let you retake one if you mess up. He's a pretty good professor, just not going to be everyone's taste.
Ferrari is a great professor and you can tell he loves what he does. Participation is not required but you can he gets annoyed when no one participates. You are expected to read the book but nothing is ever assigned and there is almost never any homework. Lectures are interesting and worth attending.
Funny, relatable, respectful
Too much homework I couldn't deal for community psychology. He's funny and nice though.
Love this guy. His lectures are very straight forward, and he makes learning the heavy content manageable for someone like me who gets flustered when theres a lot to understand. His tests are super easy, and he allows retakes which is seriously a blessing. He is super funny and makes class interesting & interactive
This course does not have midterm or final. There is a group project with not a ton of direction. This class is a hybrid class so half the quarter you will meet in person, the other half is done online. You do not need the book, all the lectures are posted on D2L. Do all the work and work hard on the group project and you get an A !
Half of the assignments were graded by his TA and half by him so grading was all over the place. Lecture slides were full of text, multiple paragraphs per slide, went super fast, and nothing was put online so good luck getting any of the info. The biggest portion of your grade is a massive, quarter long group project, so hope you like that.
I don't know how people are giving him less than 5 stars. His tests are exactly the powerpoint notes, I got an A.
He is the coolest professor ever. The PowerPoints are essentially the answers to his exams. I don't recommend buying the textbook for his class. You literally don't even need the book and you won't use it at all while he's teaching. Save yourself the money. If you miss a class or two, he won't notice. But make sure you catch the notes you missed.
Mr. F is really funny! Though this class was just "okay". It wasn't easy for me bc I am a pole sci major, and looking to minor is psych so the structure of this class was something I am not familiar with. Make sure to look at all the notes and memorize even the smallest detail. There is tricky questions like "in 1980-something, this happened".
Joe is hands down the best professor I've had at DePaul. His lectures were so entertaining, and as someone who has trouble paying attention, I never wanted to miss a word of what he was saying. Take notes in class (he provides note outlines for his ppts) and look them over before tests. Graded by 3 tests, and you can do retakes of the first 2.
I took his social psychology class during the pandemic. It was a waste of $2500. We read about 90% of the textbook, had notes every week that he wrote, had a few PowerPoints, had one 15-minute lecture by the TA, and had a zoom discussion. It was a waste of money. You can go to a community college and get a better class. Do not take him.
I was in that 347 class during the pandemic. what a great prof and someone committed to us. that person who rated Dr J a 1 is so wrong. He is well respected and loved by students. if you can, take his Soc Psych class Intro 105 and 106 too. This guy knows how to teach, and is great too.
One of my favorite profs ever. While we are all online, he does his best to engage students and make sure we are understanding the material. Super important you read the assigned readings. Even though they're long and dense, makes everything easier (plus he doesn't cover some content in the book) TIP: form a study group w peers
Ferrari is a witty and smart professor with extremely entertaining lectures. You can tell he loves his job and never fails to make the class laugh. The class grade is largely based on three large exams, two of which you can retake for a better grade if you dont do well the first time. You will do fine in this class if you follow his guided notes.
Very nice but you are only graded on about 4 things for your entire grade. However he does give you the chance to retake them.
Dn. Joe is honestly a pretty laid-back professor. He definitely has a slight tendency to go on tangents during lectures but somehow they're also informative. I liked his class enough to take another one with him, just because of how chill the vibe is. Most of your grade does come down to just three exams, so it's important to take notes.
Very clear in lesson structure throughout the quarter. Only grades based on your exam scores. Accessible lectures online if you missed class.
Deacon Ferarri is a pretty fun professor, but he does assign one paper at the end of the quarter that does not count for any grade, only a checkmark. I took his class winter quarter 2021. It was pretty okay and there were a total of 3 exams which were straightforward but if it's in person, you should study.
insane. hilarious. so passionate about psychology, he's been doing this for ages and he's still so hyped every class. so many stories to tell, great at engaging students and encouraging people to ask questions. old-fashioned in his methodology at times but the workload was minimal. make sure you take notes though. can't recommend him enough!
It is a fairly simple class. He goes over slides and tells you stories based on his experience and career. I took a hybrid with him so some days classes were over zoom. All exams were online and multiple choice. It was a great class to take at 9:40 AM. We review as we go. Overall good class.
If you are looking for an easy A and credits, this is the class for you. However, the experience in the class will not be worth the easy grade at all. Ferrari moves at a miserably slow pace (treated like the info was hard) and spews false info about other sciences. When corrected, he disrespects students and instantly claims them to be wrong.
I was in his Intro Psych class this quarter too - as a freshman, this is my favorite class and so glad I decided to come to DePaul and be in his class. He is informative, inclusive, insightful, and intelligent. If you don't like him... well, maybe you need to reconsider what you want from college.
Professor Ferrari is overall a great guy. No homework whatsoever, but in class his lectures correlate to what you need to know for the exams. Exams are split into 3, all online, and he grades on a curve! There is mandatory research participation for this class as well as one research paper, but that's it! He is nice + really funny, so pls take him!
He doesn't grade on a normal grading system, its based of how the class does. He has guided notes, async classes, and normally the only homework given is a single paper due at the end of the quarter.
I took all of his classes offered 2021-2022 and there is a big difference between his social psych and intro classes. He stays more on topic in the intro classes vs his 300 level classes. Just remember to read the book because the quizzes are a mix of lectures and the book.
This class was only graded on 3 tests throughout the whole quarter and they are not too bad if you take notes. He has many stories to tell that relate to lecture which makes lecture pretty interesting and engaging. He is very kind but he is a little bit stubborn.
Joe Ferrari is one of my favorite professors at DePaul! His lectures are very interesting and he always shares the best stories that help you understand the topics better. He grades off of a few exams and a project but they are not too difficult, and you can retake the exams if needed! If you are majoring in psych please take him!
I took his 105 and 106 classes and loved them both. I would 100% recommend, the classes are just lectures but he's really interesting and knows a lot. There are only 3 tests and you can retake them if needed so overall it was pretty easy and informational.
Joe is very funny in class and a pleasure to have. Really only graded by 3 exams and a paper. The paper is fairly easy, and research participation is required by the psych department. The curriculum is really easy and interesting. Not a hard class at all!
I really like him as a person, but as a professor he is not the best. Classes are v fun and interactive, but he pays no attention to the exams he gives. His answer sheet was completely wrong, so my grades were messed up, I had to go to his TA to fix it and honestly they both didn't seem to care. Entertaining lectures, but unorganized and uncaring.
His lectures are always super interesting. He'll go off topic a lot, but he always has something valuable to say. It was a hybrid class where we took our tests online. The workload included 3 tests, research credits, and a final paper. The final paper was super annoying, but other than that its a great class.
Great class. Easy to follow. Hybrid was perfect. 4 classes in person, 3 online, 3 tests all multiple choice and opportunities for make up. really enjoyed the course
Joe is awesome. This quarter I'm taking one of his classes for the third time. Class tends to be hybrid, sometimes you meet in person, sometimes on zoom, and all the exams we take are online. If you're taking Joe's PSY 105 class, he doesn't take attendance so take that as you will. His powerpoint are fill-in-the-blanks which are very helpful
He is amazing you will love his class, He gives you opportunities to retake quiz
Deacon Ferrari's PSY 105 course was one that I looked forward to joining. His lectures are very engaging because he an expert in his field. His class is one that I appreciated with the lecture slides being the same as the provided notes, and only 3 tests that are the entirety of your grade. I recommend taking both his PSY 105 and 106 courses!
An easy class, you meet in person every Mon and you go online Wed. The only items he graded were three exams (he allows retakes). He doesn't allow anyone to take a picture of his slides so be ready for that, he also expects students to participate but he doesn't push it too much. A good professor at DePaul, worth taking him!
Do not take this class if you get overwhelmed by loud speaking. Even when sitting in the very back of the lecture hall it felt like i was being yelled at by someone right next to me. If you can get past the volume of the lectures they can be informative. However, you also have to decipher through the many tangents he goes on. graded only by 3 tests
I think I was in the class by that person with a rating of #1, and he "spoke loud." It was a very large lecture room, with no mike. If too loud, MOVE! Dn Joe Ferrari is great - engaging, moving, informative, inspirational, I think one of the best at DePaul and the best in Psych I hear. Take him and form your own opinion.
probably one of the best at DePaul, and clearly the best in the Psych Dept. He engaged us in thought and informed us with lots of info, but in a fun way. Love his classes, and taking him for PSY 106, and PSY 347.
You can tell he loves his job and made early morning lectures engaging. If you missed class it wasn't a big deal because he doesn't take attendance but you are only graded on 3 exams for the quarter. Exams are also online only
This was a very easy course to take and his lectures aren't hard to follow. His class met twice a week, once in person and once online. All his tests are online and fairly easy, he also gets these graded quickly. Overall, would say this is a good course to take and not difficult at all.
Professor Ferrari keeps the lectures engaging, though his volume can be loud at times. The class is graded on exams and a paper, which can be challenging but manageable with the help of resources like unstuckstudy. Overall, a worthwhile course with an informative and passionate instructor.
I took Dn Joe for all 3 of my core psych classes [both Intro sections + Soc Psych]. Just the BEST, just the most engaging and someone DePaul is lucky to have as a prof for many years. Recommend you take him if you want to learn, laugh, and gain insights.
Only 3 exams and no other assessments or homework. Just study and you'll get a good grade. Definitely an interesting professorwith very high energy. Sometimes can be slightly confusing but IMO worth it for entertainment value
This professor is decent. His classes are interesting enough but he can give rude responses periodically. So if you are sensitive, beware.
I LOVE Dn Joe [aka, Dr Ferrari]. So engaging and so informative. He has 3 exams and on the first 2 you can have a Retake [you decide] if you don't like the grade or missed the test. I loved coming to his morning PSY 105 and 106 [Intro] classes, and his PSY 347 [Soc Psy] Mon eve class. Take him - he is nominated for "Excellence in Teaching."
Very informative, energetic, and passionate about teaching, and incredibly hilarious too. He does get frustrated when we don't participate, but he never yells, he just begs sometimes, so definitely try to participate, even if it's just a small comment. The more you put into the class, the more you get out of it, so he's definitely worth taking!
