He is a great teacher and interesting even early in the morning. I was freaked out to take speech but he makes it actually fun. I had to drop the class becasue of work but I am going to take him again in the spring. If you're worried about speech and really want ot learn something this is the class to take. It is a hard course but worth it.
Just took the final and I still have a group project due. This class is hard but fun. Not sure if I want to major in speech but I think advertising is something I'd enjoy. He said they are going to let you major in speech soon so I probably will and then transfer to UH. Joe makes the class bearable; take him if you have to take public speaking!
Professor Ganakos was a little intimidating becasue he said it was not an easy class. However, it was actually a lot of fun and even though it was tougher than I expected it I will actually use the things I learned. The speeches are graded more strongly than the tests. He also grades you on participation. He really knows his stuff!
Joe rocks! I took this class two semesters ago and hated the instructor. Joe kept us awake at 8 in the morning and helped me come to terms with being afraid of being in front of audience. It was worth all the work, definitely.
VERY FUN CLASS BUT HARDER THAN I THOUGHT. TOOK THIS OVER A REGULAR SPEECH CLASS; STILL HAD A SPEECH. LOTS OF THEORY.
Professor Genakos is good. Sarcastic and fun. Highly recommended.
Very good teacher. Taught me alot about public speaking. I overcame my fear. RECOMMENDED!!!!
CLASSWORK IS VERY DEMANDING
Did the final presentation last night. Not what I thought; it isn't a speech course. It is a COMMUNICATION course ... much more fun, actually. Actualy applies to all majors; more about how to manage how people see you. Good course, good professor.
VERY DEMNADING AND HARD COURSE. NOT RECOMMENDED TO STUDENTS WHO DOES NOT LIKE READING A LOT.
Tough course but fun. Definitely more interesting than public speaking. Joe expects A LOT from his students; but if you ask for help he will help.
Had a blast in this class. It is required so he is a good professor to take. Tests were all essay; most of the grades are from your speeches. He speaks really, really fast though.
Had a 5 week summer course. Group project was tought because we had two people drop in our group. I like the course but you should wait until Fall or Spring. He is a funny teacher; you definitely will know where you stand with him. Not ofr the faint of heart.
Class is fun. It is required for most students to transfer to a univeristy. He's a trip, good class from the first day.
He's really funny and makes you think. Had to take an incomplete because of work and kids. The class is hard but it is needed to graduate and you learn a lot. I'm taking the class again in the spring.
Best class I've taken at Lee or at Lamar. He makes you want to be in class.
Class is ok, alot harder than i ever thought it would be
The internet course was different than I expected because I still had speeches to do. Good teacher but he has really high expectations. I am taking him for another elective in the summer.
Very difficult class. too much work. he doesn't think that his students have their own lives. he assigned 10 essays questions and picks 4 randomly.. so you write 6 essays for absolutely nothing! As a person hes pretty cool though, but i do not suggest anybody take this class unless you are majoring or really interested in speech!
I actually used some of the stuff from this class to get hired for a job. The class is tough mainly because the group I was in was useless. Lots of notes, lots of reading but I enjoyed Joe's class. Merry Christmas, Joe!
I finished the 3 week course and enjoyed it. He is a little intimidating but he is very funny and kept me concentrating. He is worth taking.
Just finished the Holiday Semester. It was difficult only because there was a lot of work to do in a very short period of time. But as far as Joe, he was a great instructor and made sure we covered everything required of us. He worked with us to help us on every level. Chuck Finnell needs to take note of this man's dedication to his teaching.
VERY ANAL ABOUT ATTENDANCE. STAY ON HIS GOOD SIDE AND YOU CAN PASS THE CLASS. TENDS TO TALK "DOWN" AT THE STUDENTS.
He's tough but the class is good. Good instructor for early in the morning but you need to be on time. He knows too much...
Took a hybrid class last fall. I enjoyed the lectures but had trouble keeping up online when I was at home. He is a great teacher but I should have taken the class that meets twice a week.
He is really really smart. KEEP YOUR CELLPHONE OFF IN CLASS. Trust me on that :) Fun class Mr Joe!
Interpersonal Communication was supposed to be a class whwer you didn't have to do speechs; we still did a speech; not as bad as I thought but still scary. He is a good teacher but he doesn't put up with b.s. on why stuff is late or why you are late.
Joe is a very smart person and appears to know his stuff. The exams were hard in my opinion, wasn't expecting the essay questions. He's anal-retentive about alot of things, but I would take his class again and recommend him.
3 week class early in the morning. He's a good guy, funny and keeps you working. Lots of work for only 3 weeks but it wasn't as scary as I assumed it would be. I'd take him again.
The class was actually useful for my major even though I didn't think it would be. Tough exams but he lets you tape the lectures and that helps a lot. Very funny, very smart. If you need speech take him.
Had a good time in the class. Speeches were time consuming because it was a 5 week semester. He's fun and appears to know the material.
While in this mans class I hated him but after the summer session was done I loved him. He taught us the essentials. Very interesting class. LOTS AND LOTS of discussions. Relates everything to life. Teaches with a passion. Loves his job! I made a B and that was the hardest B ive ever worked for.
HE WILL DEFINITELY MAKE YOU THINK. TAKE HIM SERIOUSLY WHEN HE TELLS YOU THAT YOU WILL WORK YOUR BUTT OFF. AFTER IT WAS DONE I WOULD TRULY DO IT AGAIN. HE IS ONE OF A KIND.
This is a fun class to take but lots of people drop; he's demanding but you get a real education in his class. He keeps you interested, even if the material isn't. If you need to take Business and Professional Communication you should enroll.
He is able to make you think even if you think you can't speak in public. So far, I've learned a lot from him. Everyone has to take this course to graduate. He is the best professor for speech.
Long semester becasue of the hurricane. He made it interesting but it was a very tough class because of crazy group members. I would take him again.
Take Joe in the regular semester. The 3week course is a lot of work. He is a really fun instructor and actually knows what he talks about.
I took him last summer. He's fun and the class was a lot of work but not too bad. Be sure to turn off your cell before you come into class though. :)
I?m holding my first test in my hand right now and it?s April! This test is over material I read, (not taught in class) in the book 4 months ago!! This will be my second grade including a speech I gave 4 days ago!!Horrible class; I haven?t learned a thing I couldn?t have read on my own.
I love this class and the professor but it is a crazy amount of work in only five weeks. If I had to do it over again I'd take it in the fall.
He tells you up front that he's strict and he is but he made the class way more interesting that I worried it would be. This was an elective for me but he made it very clear how it relates to other majors (psychology in my case.) Take him!
Someone joked and said he was basically Google. They were right. He knows his stuff and he requires you to do the same. Wow.
Not for the faint of heart but you'll actually learn how to do the things he teaches. He's a smartass in a good way. And if you have any sense at all you'll never ever let your cell phone go off in his class.
He is very unorganized and demanding, not in a good way. He strays too far from the topics that should be covered, often turning things into a casual conversation that has little to do with the class. He is also very rude and has ridiculous rules like taking off up to 25% of a grade if you turn something in even a few minutes late. Avoid him.
Tough course mainly because my group presented some problems. Be careful, if you don't like working in groups this is going to be rough. He's funny and knows the material but don't get on his bad side or he'll rip into you pretty hard like if you let your cell ring or if you are really alte.
The class was harder than i thought it would be but i got lucky and had a good time. He is funny but he is really serious when you dont turn things in on time when they are do.
He knows the information really well but he expects a lot of time and work from you. Only one speech in this course but a lot of writing and you absolutely must participate in the discussions. The books was a ton of money, too. He is really good but buy the book from someone who already took the class.
Mr. Joe keeps things interesting. He knows the subject and he expects you to keep up. He isn't playing when he says be on time.
Joe is a nice guy, really sarcastic, really serious about his deadlines and really bad about giving feedback that you can work with. His business comm. class is disorganized, rushed and hard as hell. Should have taken him for interpersonal.
He's cool and he does make you laugh. You pic up a lot but we get off track because of a crazy woman in my class who really is crazy. We're almost through and it is harder than I ever thought but he's a decent guy. If you do your work and pay attention you can pass.
I hated him the first day of class... BUT i stuck it out and he is actually really nice and a decent teacher.. He grades super hard! But you only have to do 3 speeches and 1 is in a group so its not too bad. Overall he is good!
The first day of class he came in and scared everyone! Half the class went and dropped the class! I stuck it out along with 10 other people! The class ended up being great! I am glad i stayed in because he is a very good professor and knows what he is talkin about! I really like having someone teach me that makes sense when he speaks!
He is really tough and he doensnt let up for a second but when he tells you that you will be able to do the speeches in any other class at any university he isnt lying. I would take him again.
I took his bus com class and enjoyed every second but the first day! He is a great teacher and can be really helpful. READ THE BOOK!! Even if you just skim the book and make a tiny bit of notes, do it! Do what he wants, when he wants and you'll be just fine!
He seems like his hard at first,he's really not, but he's really cool, he's very helpful if you just ask for it, he was enjoyable!
horrible teacher! would talk down to everyone when he got the chance. i dont recommend taking him.
I never shouldn have taken this class in a 3week holiday course. I liked the class but the workload was crazy!!! The professor knows a lot and he expects you to do a lot more than just read the book. Good course but take it in a full semester if you have a job or holiday plans.
Joe is a really cool guy but sometimes he talks down to the students or "picks on" the same one or two people the whole semester. He shows favoritism to athletes. However, he keeps the class interesting it is really hard but it's doable.
He is really good but kindof intimidating but if you follow his rules you can get a good grade. He is funny but you do not want to be late or let your cell phone ring in class.
not a good teacher
Hard-he wanted it to be, he has control issues, uses class as guessing game. Says he is willing to help you, but wants you to contact him after class or by email.Clarity, like to keep you guessing. Not sure if he really grades anything...how can someone make a B by doing everything and someone else make a C that only half way did assignments.
It was a tough course but I made it through. Hated the textbook and he said he is switching so sell them back quick!! He is not laid back about absences but he does know his stuff. I'd take him again.
He was way harder than the first teacher. He was funny and good but he was really really strict too.
It's a lot easier if you took psychology first. Really interesting but it is a lot of work. Prof Ganokas is really tough but he makes sure you understand stuff. The course keeps you interested and the lectures are usually pretty funny.
GOOD GUY AND HE KNOWS HIS STUFF. BUY THE BOOK ONLINE AND NOT THE BOOKSTORE. THE GROUP WORTH IS A PAIN IN THE BUTT. BE ON TIME OR ELSE.
No one wants to take public speaking but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It was a long five weeks but I am glad I took it in the summer. First class I've had this year that actually expected college level work. Follow his rules and it won't be bad.
Hes tough but not as tough as others make him out to be. The biggest thing I hated was the group work but it was because we all had different schedules. And you can't sell the book back!
He has a ridiculs attendance rule like we're in UH or something. He's funny and I like his lectures but he doesn't put up with being even a few minutes late with is completely ridiculs.
Most think he seems hard, but he's really not if you just do the work he assigned. Most comes from the notes he provides. He does pop quizzes to make sure you're reading your book. Quizzes are extra points. Group work is a pain not only because I'm shy but because it's hard to work around everyone's schedule. Overall pretty good/interesting class.
Very good teacher. Knows his stuff in tiniest details. Speaks pretty fast, but clearly. Good jokes, pretty funny. Forget your cellphone in the car, he hates them even on vibrate. All his classes include speech component. He gives easy extra credit sometimes. Altogether, hard to make an A, but excellent, professional teacher. I highly recommend.
He scares you out of your mind the first class but stick with it. He makes you sign a contract that says you will follow the syllabus but it isn't that bad if you show up on time and participate in class. He is VERY funny but not if you are playing on your cell in class. Highly recommended so far!!!
It wasn't as scary as I though it was. Joe has stories and real examples for everything and most are funny. Don't be late and don't leave your phone on!
Says one thing, then does or says the opposite later. Expectations for beginning student are way too high to realistically attain. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU WANT TO EARN A GOOD GRADE. I worked SO hard, and got a C.
He was a good but tough teacher. He also wrote me a wonderful letter of recommendation for a scholarship which I can't thank him enough for. Thank you Joe!!!
Mr. Ganakos is a great instructor, though, you can't be a slacker in his class. He is very tough, but also very fair. He comes with a reputation, but as long as you read your text, pay attention, and LEAVE YOUR PHONE OFF, he is great. He does have a bit of an ego, but if you can overlook that, I would definitely recommend him.
He gives you a rubric and if you stick to it you're okay. He's tough but it did help with other classes. I still don't like speaking in front of people though. Oh they're all right about leaving your phone on too.
He's a good teacher, will help you with anything, but he speaks very technical and lots of the questions you are asked on the discussion boards are too hard to understand.
I almost dropped this after the first class but I'm glad I didn't. He will definitely push you but you will be able to do it if you listen to what he says. Tough grader but he does give exgtra credit.
He is a very very hard grader, he likes to joke around and make fun of students. Stay away from this guy if you possibly can, he is a tough guy and passing with an A is almost impossible. Be warned DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!
Harder than I thought but I learned. Group work is a beast. He's tough on you but you actually learn something. Toughest class I had in spring but it made my other courses with speeches alot easier.
This class is beyond difficult. The clarity of his instructions are terrible and he has changed the syllabus 3x on us already. I dont know what is due and what isn't. be prepared to read your chapters! if you dont, you will fail miserably. TURN OFF YOUR PHONE/DONT BE LATE!! he will point you out!!! I feel I am in a debate class rather than speech.
Very difficult professor, not sure what he wants, unclear class. You must read book, keep up with your chapters.
I dualmajored in Public Relations and Business (marketing) so I need this course. He's very tough and the groupwork is horrible because you don't get to pick your members. The lectures were funny often.
It wasn't as bad as I thought. I still don't like speaking in public
Tough. Expects way too much from beginning students. There are 2 tedious chapters and 2 hard quizzes each week. You get 25 minutes for 10 mc Qs and a long essay Q. There are also discussion Qs, speeches, & the tough 100 Q final. Not clear at all; not helpful at all. DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY. Trust me, you will blow a fuse by the end of the semester.
he is funny. do not get on his bad side cause he does not play games. he does grade hard but its worth it at the end. he goes out of his way to help you pass. does not like cell phones so don't even think about it. hates it if you are late.
He will scare you to death on the first day but he gets less scary. When I had to miss for a family problem he worked with me and he will help you if you ask but he does travel a lot for his debater team.
The class was harder than it should've been and him being so intimidating doesn't make it any easier. He's also not an easy grader. I've given several speeches at church and school events in front of large numbers of people and after 69 credit hrs of college have a 3.94 GPA. I did my work and tried my hardest and only got a B in the class.
I took Joe's Speech 1315 class, he expects a lot from his students and even more from his debate team. The class was enjoyable and I learned a lot. He is no nonsense and does have a lot of wit to him. Joe is very willing to help a struggling student in his courses and yes do keep that phone off!!
Joe is a great teacher, very funny, but you attend class. He is a tough grader but if you do your work and do your extra credit you will ok. make sure you make any effort to stay on top. the only thing I did not like was that he favored his debate team more. the overall class was fun but he make it harder that it needs to be. I made a B and trust it was earned.
I absolutely hated this class. He's arrogant! If you're even a minute late he will give you a "tardy" like you're in high school. If you like to read 60 pages a day or taking tests you've learned nothing about you may like this class, if not DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
He is very condescending. Almost tries to make this class a debate class and not a BEGINNER speech class. He's very judgmental and expects you to be a exceptional speaker at the end of the course. I took a mini and he didn't seem to consider the time span. I got a C.
He's funny as hell but don't slack; try to bs him and you can go ahead and drop. I had fun but it's a lot of work for a summer class. He gave us extra credit but no study guides.
Still hate group work. He is tough but the best lectures I have had at Lee.
It's my major so I have to take it. He's good but don't be late or you lose points.
Went out of his way to humiliate someone in class. He hardly ever showed up to class - he was on a trip somewhere. When he did show up, he didn't use the book in the classroom. He just winged it. I did not enjoy this class at all, and I really wish I got my money back. Loved talking about himself and ppl in class
Funny cuz most reviews here r accurate in some way. Good teacher but focuses on debate 2 much. Tests are harder than needed. Read everything needed & only did marginally better than some who didn't and guessed (obscure info mentioned in one line in the book on the multiple choice parts). Hardest A ever but feeling of achievement is unmatched.
Well to start to start he pays more attention to his debate team. I absolutely felt as if he was mostly there to boast on how his team is amazing. I worked really hard for Thus class I obtained a B. He demands work to be on time but he himself takes forever to grade. He really disappointed me, I was not inspired at all but this is my opinion.
He good, he gives plenty of extra credit. He is tough but he is good.
I felt that the textbook for this class made tests very tough due to the long chapters. Mr. Ganakos is a very nice teacher and willing to help, however due to being the debate coach he is very busy and didn't post grades til late in semester. Overall I think the class was fair
Took him for a summer 3week course but ended up dropping due to family stuff. I'd take him again though; it's a lot of work but its interesting.
Has you read more than teaches. The book has way too much b.s. to remember everything and he gives you absolutely nothing on what's important to study for tests. His tests are ridicules essay format and very confusing. He expects you to walk in and be a genius and know what he knows and be a perfect speaker in a week. He throws you into the fire.
Very arrogant and very intimidating but very funny. If he would give his tests and actually teach speech class instead of turning you to the book without giving you a heads up of the most key points to study for his tests, he would be a great teacher. But his main goal is debate. Be ready to learn a little, be graded hard and be criticized.
Joe Ganakos is an exception teacher at Lee College. If you are willing to put forth the effort for the education, and truly would like to leave with something learned then take him. If you are lazy, do not take him. If you are a communist who doesn't believe in punctuality, don't take him. Take him if you believe in humanity.
You have to be willing to do the work and read the material. Once this is done, the class is a breeze. Keep in mind, he does travel often since he is the debate coach at Lee. With that in mind, shoot him an email and he's likely to get back to you as soon as he can. Do not take offense to his dry sense of humor.
Professor gives terrible feed back, and does not give good description of work wanted-needed. Lectures can pertain everything but needed material.
Hello all, part 1 Professor Ganakos is fair you can say it was times I thought of dropping this class because I was worried about my grade not being at a passing rate. The lord he brough me through it. I worked hard to get my grade, and did not miss class yes it could have been a little better. Please be advised you will need to set time to read.
prt 2, When you come to class he expects you to know what you read and askes a lot of questions according to the book. He expects you to know what you read. He also goes off topic about non-academic or book related things. THIS IS A FRACKLE ROCK SPCH CLASS AND NOT A ENGL CLASS. bE READY TO WORK HARD AND READ THE BOOK LOOKING OUT LOOKING IN.
Prt 3, It is 3 exams that are hard and worth 30% each with multiple choice on the front and fill in the blank on back, with a essay portion with up to 30 points you can earn. FOR A SPCH CLASS CRAZY! you will have a presentation in this class and you must present min 13 mins 30 sec and max 15 min if you finish in 7 min you will fail. guidelines
prt 4, EXAM 2 we had a take home examthatwasa essay with questions we had to reply to in essay format I felt like I was doing bad on it but i did quite well. He could have given us a sample version as a guide. He did say he was going to give us quizzes but he didn't BEAWAREOFTHEM. he could have given us journal assign "free 100s"
Tough class. I usually make Bs in all my classes easily but I really had to work for it in this class. His grading is tough, I usually BS my classes but it hurt my grade in this one. If you want to be a great speaker, take him. If you understand his lectures and do the reading, you'll be a great speaker. If you just want the credit, look elsewhere.
Hes very funny and has great lectures! He is a very tough grader but I really enjoyed his class although I sadly made a C. Be prepared to read!
I took this course to get out of having to stand up and talk, and ended up really enjoying it. There is one final presentation, but it is not bad at all.
I wouldnt recommend Ganakos at all! Toughest grader on campus. Lectures are hard to comprehend bc they dont even match the book. Tests are too DIFFICULT! If you care about your gpa dont take him! Been an A+ student but once I took his class I was getting 60s. Brags about his debate team. Very sarcastic. Must read textbook & no phones.
Lee has a lot of instructors that should not be teaching at college level; too many are not fit to teach. Halfway into the semester, I am extremely discouraged; I am mistreated by Mr. Ganakos. When I had several concerns, he would not listen. Was EXTREMELY unhelpful and unprofessional. I would transfer schools if I could afford to.
not good with responding to messages when you course message him he assumes you didnt do it correctly so you dont know how many times I had to pull them receipts to show I did. He takes forever with grading. He always trys to go back and forth with you since hes a debate coach. Theres so much about him I dislike. Hes just the worst PERIODT.
Although he can be a nice person this class was not very enjoyable. He can sometimes low ball you on grades no matter how hard you worked. He also assigns a group project on the second day and requires you to do it throughout the semester with partners he chooses. He also does not throughly explain any assignments. Hardest speech credit so far.
He would preach on punctuality but came late several times. Also gave tests that were way harder than any other speech class I have ever taken. His calendar wasnt prepared and made frequent changes. He also a few times randomly cancelled class. Hes not a bad teacher but I didnt learn much or enjoy the class.
Bunch of snowflakes on here. He's tough but fair. I turned in a couple of assignments late which dropped me from an A to a B, but that was on me. Hilarious if these others think the real world is gonna be easier.
He gives way too much work, especially for a summer mini course. He does not listen and he is way too anal about his instructions. I had to contact him several times because the syllabus was out of date. DO NOT take him, this was one of the hardest classes I've taken. Spare yourself.
He didn't follow the schedule he provided on the syllabus. Test dates were changed. He seemed unorganized since he confused our class with his other classes on multiple occasions. He did not provide study guides or reviews for exams. Exams were difficult due to the length and time limit. the class started with 30 students and ended with 10.
I've taken Joe for quite a few classes(speech major). Every time I look to see if another professor is offering the class I need. He isn't awful or condescending, he just has really high expectations & I always feel like I'm doing something wrong. Will totally dissect your work analyze hard & grad even harder. He has eased up quite a bit lately...
Bro he literally made us do a speech where we had to interview someone in person even though it was the pandemic and we were on lockdown. I took his class in 2020 by the way wouldn't recommend him to be honest. If I could go back in time I would take Whitlow again because Ganakos deserves to get fired straight up.
do not take this class if you are a full time student it requires all of your time to complete assignments. feedback is poor and very late. He is condescending. Lecture textbook and exams do not match. He designs his class to fail you. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES if you have a job. if so please be ready to have very little time for any other classes
Just go for it! but be willing to do a little extra, you're not going to regret the growth. Totally different person from what the reviews say, I watched him be super gentle in his approach to specific students (at times I could canonize this man for his patience). Personally, he helped me allot!
Quite literally the worst professor so far, never grades on time and went MIA for two weeks without any sort of notice. His syllabus was incorrect, never quite bothered to change his syllabus and just left us guessing. The course is more of a self study for exams which I dont mind but tests were horribly spaced out. DO NOT RECCOMEND.
I dropped this guys class as fast as I could. He's very proud of himself because he is the debate coach but he's very rude. I was going to stick it out but our very first assignment was so dang confusing I dropped the class. I picked up another professor for the same class and passed with an A. If I had stayed with Ganakos, I would have failed
This teacher is the horrible, do not take him. He is strict and judgmental. In fact, he tells you from the beginning how hard it is and how he doesn't really give anything higher than a C. Spoke to an advisor about him and she told me herself she doesn't enroll any student to him. She said he thinks he is teaching at a university and is too much.
Professor Ganakos runs a tough but fair class. While the workload can be heavy, engaging with the materials and using resources like Unstuck AI for study prep really helps. Not an easy A, but you'll learn a lot.
WORD SALAD!!
You do have to do the reading, notes for lectures are most helpful. He can pick up when students are struggling with technology due to their financial situations and does his best to improvise for students who really need to during presentations. Compassionate and cares about students that put in effort into their success. Extra credit. Recommend!
He is very hard, but as long as you put in the effort to learn you will pass I passed with a B plus and to add I'm a high school student. he grades fairly and consistently, and provides excellent feedback. I do not recommend procrastination because that will cause you to fail the class expect to do group projects.
