His Creative Writing class is great. Joe is a very helpful and encouraging professor. He will not shy away from using the sword of truth if your material sucks, but if you are a good writer then you and your writing will find a comfortable home in the workshopping section of the class. Poetry is a strongpoint.
didnt care too much for his teaching style...
all you need to do to get an A is go to class, read the readings he assigns, and offer a deeper more intellectual insight during the class discussions and in papers. i've gotten an A in his past two classes i've taken.
He makes lectures interesting enough to keep your attention. Offers extra credit opportunities which is nice.
Good teacher who genuinely cares for the education of the student. Put some effort, and you will be glad you did (for it will not be too hard to get an A if you show some passion for learning.) DO NOT go without your textbook. Makes it more than easy to understand subject. You have to be a lazyass or a complete idiot to fail this one.
difficult to pass!
His teaching style leaves alot to be desired. Instead of actually giving insight on the course material he simply relies on the students opinions... once he kicked students out of class for not reading... and two weeks later came to class not having read the material himself. Class required six essays and attendance was mandatory. Take this one
Very good professor with a passion for Literature. Attendance is mandatory and don't expect a good grade if you don't attend on a daily basis. You can only miss 5 classes if you want to be eligible for an A. PARTICIPATE! PARTICIPATE! PARTICIPATE! I can't stress that enough. Read what is assigned cause he will call on you. Hates badly written papers
Class is interesting but when you need clarifcation on the assignments do not expect it have gone to speak to the professor and it did not do any good had to drop the class.
the class it's self is fun. i like to write but sometimes have some difficulties. i really tried all i could do for his class and but it was not good enough. dont take his class if you need attention for your prof. He does not believe in giving up his extra time. not a good teacher.
Good prof
full of himself, very arrogant
HAD TO DROP HIS CLASS.
Very helpful and understanding. Respect him and he will respect you. English Composition is generally a very difficult subject, but he gives you a fair chance along with some nice opportunities if you keep your grades and attendance high enough from the beginning.
Not an easy class. You MUST pay attention to the information he gives and read all the pages he has assigned. He is also picky in what you write about/how you write it, so make sure to turn in papers ON TIME! If you give effort, I'm sure the class will be somewhat easy for you.
He loves his literature and loves it when you do the reading and get involved in class. If you do this, the class is a breeze. Lots of essays but he focuses on more "deep thought" than MLA style and how many words. He does expect good grammar, but the class is very engaging and fun.
If you do the reading & write the essays he will do whatever he can to help you. go to office hours...hes great! really insightful and entertaining. taking american lit after comp 2 with him. To the other reviewers, dont try to push and pull with your profs, work with them and they'll work with you. :)
Very engaging with a passion. Class participation is mandatory, he will go down roll and ask for opinions, but this does more of having students hear what others felt about a story rather than calling people out for not reading. Must read and have general understanding of your material. Asks for your best and wants you to succeed.
i'm really surprised at how many people don't pass his class- he practically writes the paper for you in class so long as you participate and pay attention. read the assignments, write your paper, and ask for help if you need it- and i promise you will pass with flying colors. good teacher, but only take his class if you are serious about learning.
WORST TEACHER EVER!!!!!!!!! DONT TAKE HIM!!! HE HAS NO HEART WHAT SO EVER HE WILL FAIL YOU A DAY AFTER YOUR LAST DAY TO DROP YOUR CLASS!!!
I agree with all the bad ratings!!
Hoppe is the coolest teacher, some people in my class didn't like him, but he really is understanding and as helpful as YOU let him be. Thumbs up all the way, taking more of his classes. :)
He is a really good teacher. I can honestly say he helped open up my writing again with letting our papers be very free and put our selves into them. He wants people to participate alot, mainly tell him how the poem made you feel and what you got out of it. attendance effects your grade but not too harsh. he is helpful if you show him you are tryin
The hardest professor I've ever been in contact with. He is not helpful, not understanding, and does not make this class enjoyable. Run, not walk away from taking his class!
I had Professor Hoppe for American Lit. and he was awesome! Best English teacher ever! His lectures require you to do the reading and be active in class. You write 6 papers and do a small powerpoint presentation on a poet or writer. It's an easy A and makes literature a lot more fun. I would highly recommend Mr. Hoppe
He gets off track sometimes, but with good reason. He helps make learning fun and intersting. You earn your grade in his class. I have taken him twice, English Comp 1 and World Lit, with reason. He's one of the better english teachers out there.
he is a good teacher. However, he does a presentation in the class and some girls didn't live up to his expectations so he went off on them, waiting every ones time.... and embarrassing the girls his behavior was appalling.(i think professors that do these presentations are whack, I'm not paying them for the ability to look up things on Google)
This is a super easy class. There are no test or quiz or exams. You write four very simple, easy and basic papers. No research is involved. Class gets boring though. He sometimes gets very off topic but it's still a learning experience. I do feel like he calls on the same people every class. But over all this class is simple.
Waste of money and waste of time. He doesnt hand out a guide explaining what he's looking for in your work and he always went off topic. I could understand how some people passed cause their already good at writing. If your like me and need a guide to help you I wouldnt suggest him. I retook the class with a different professor and got an A.
Really just an awful professor. Be prepared to be insulted if you disagree with him. The class isn't hard if your willing to bs your way through it, but don't expect to have any actual conversations that might help you learn. Did I mention that he will insult you in the middle of class?
This guy is awesome, the people who said he insulted them in class was because they were most likely ignorant and talking during class, nor came to class prepared. He makes you think and helps IF YOU ASK. He is a little scatter brained but he has kids and makny classes. Still awesome, deff take his class.
He is fair. If he seemed rude it was bc you said something ridiculous and it was obvious you didn't do the assignment. He listened to all opinions of each student respectfully. He was clear about exactly what he wanted, gave plenty of time for each assignment and was fair in his grading. Attend class, make an effort and you will pass. Made an A!
Pretty cool guy, Helpful during his office hours. He has his off days, but if you read the assignments, participate in class, and not make obnoxious, know it all comments, you should be fine.
Pretty chill prof. Allows some allotted time to finish papers if needed. Really improved my writing skills taking this class. Papers are interesting and he even lets you do your own most of the time.
Took honors world lit. Easy class. He is super cool and chill. It was a small class of 7 or so and we sat in a circle so we can all discuss and contribute. We read about 6 books ad wrote papers on each and did about 5 powerpoints. We discussed topics of the books. It was an easy A. You have to write well and read. Awesome prof. Taking him again x2
Professor Hoppe is rad!! I had him for Poetry & Honors World Lit. He is super intelligent, witty, and helpful. He has been a big help and inspiration to me. I highly suggest him! And hey, when he's 'rude' to people they ALWAYS are being more rude and obnoxious. He really is super, and hip, and he looks like a viking!!!
Joe Hoppe was the next best enlgish professor I have had the greatest pleasure of coming into contact with. Took Honors Engl 1302 with him and it was tons of papers of course (one every week) but definitely easy and shed light more on the insight to analytical reading. Really funny, extremely intelligent, calm, relaxed. Definitely recommend him.
One of the best teachers out there. 10 out of 10.
Passionate in what he teaches. Makes everything straightforward and clear. The only want to fail is not doing the readings, or putting effort into it. Just do what he ask for in the paper, nothing more, and you will succeed, don't over-think it. I highly recommend him because he teaches well and if you don't pass then all you have is you to blame.
awesome teacher! everything needed to suceed is provided. All the readings can be found online, so no need for the book. Cool Guy to learn from!
Great teacher!! His class is really chill and he makes the lectures interesting. Would definitely take him again.
I took him for Honors class and learned so much about culture, myself, and my writing skills. He teaches you how to look beyond the obvious. He demands accuracy and precision and indepth thinking when it comes to your writing. He changed me as a person. I cried a bit at the end of class;that’s how wonderful he is. I will NEVER forget him.TAKE HIS CLASS!
Nit picks paper down to a C. If you do not answer what he thinks, he will either laugh or look at you like you are crazy. DO NOT TAKE!!!
The only reason one would not do well in his course is if the syllabus was not followed. As stated previously, he practically writes the papers for you if you pay attention and take notes in class. He is an excellent teacher and very chill. He does expect you to know the basics of writing, which is why he checks for comp I completion.
As a teacher, he can not give a good subject, he can not make a good atmosphere in the class! Do not choose him!
Joe's teaching style is very personable, and he has aided me immensely on acheiving my own literary voice. I highly recommend him for any English course. He breaks down each essay to a very comprehensible format and follows the sylubus directly. Do yourself a favor and go learn from this man.
He is a fantastic professor, and a fantastic person. There is so much writing involved in this class and it requires a lot of work, but he will definitely help you. I really feel like I became a better writer after taking this class.
Possibly the worst professor I've ever had. Not only are his lectures pointless but he's one of the most nitpicky graders I've ever met in my life. I would revise a paper with the things that he stated as "Revise as marked" but then I would fix those problems and he would just create new problems in places I never edited. Terrible prof. DO NOT TAKE
He is all about poems and novels but not reality. He asks for you option but shows you down if you are thinking like him. I would never take him in a million years. You can find better or wait til next semester!
Rarely have I encountered someone as hardworking and passionate as Joe Hoppe. This guy knows his stuff and if you pay attention he can make you a much better writer. He doesn't give away high grades - he makes you earn them. I loved this class and plan to take as many as I can with him.
Here's the deal with Hoppe: pay attention, do the work, and ask for help when you get stuck. If you do these things you will learn A LOT. He is an awesome prof and I hope I get to take more classes with him!
I wouldn't ever take him as my teacher again for my lit 2 Class. The pros is he is passionate about the subject but the biggest con is his grading. In all my time at ACC I've never gotten so low of grades on my papers at times I felt like I was cheated out of my grades. Not helpful at all, he's rude, and just seems like he's there for the pay check
DO NOT TAKE. gives essays and if you do not get accepted on almost all of them you won't pass. Quiz every class, so you can't skip. Probably one of the worst teachers I had at ACC.
I was so excited to take his class after reviewing the feedback from here. Woah, I was wrong.. I have never had someone grade my essays as hard as he did. I have made A's on all my essays throughout high school and college. I get low C's even after hours in tutoring! He's passionate, cheerful, but a tough tough grader... beware!
I took him based on reviews. First couple of days very impressed and interested... I was very confident on first essay. As soon as I got my essay back became confused and he was not much help.. he can turn on you pretty quick...
He is passionate about the subject and that means a lot. Encourages participation and is attentive to student's opinions and ideas. Great classroom leader.
Was unable to get clarity with understanding central idea in Comp 2. Was advised to go to tutor lab and did twice, but papers were still not acceptable. Tried meeting with him, and did but it resulted in dropping the class. I never skipped; made good grades on almost all quizzes. His final response was that I wasn't doing what he asked on papers.
BEST ENGLISH CLASS... Not hard if you read a short story a week(which are only a couple of pages) 7 essays and he helps you understand what he wants written. Go to class and read a little, you will get an A. Quizzes are easy and help your grade.
Hoppe is a decent professor. He clearly cares a lot about what he does, and wants students to be successful. Generous/fair grader and gives clear essay criteria. I didn't enjoy his lectures because he often went on weird or irrelevant tangents. Make sure to buy the recommended book of short stories, it's required in order to write your papers.
I have never had a teacher spring such a bad grade after all the hard work I went through. He grades based on ONE final essay and all the good grades for doing all your other work perfectly makes no difference. So basically just go to class the last two weeks to do just your final essay cus everything else he teaches is literally pointless. Beware.
Hoppe is AMAZING! Do not listen to the bad reviews! He is inspirational & you can tell he LOVES what he does. Makes you work for your grade but it's not impossible to get an A. My advice is read the stories, write down EVERYTHING he writes on the board (it comes in handy when writing your essays), REVISE your essays before turning them in!
By far worst Professor I've ever had. His Comp class is more of a world literature class and he jumps off subject constantly. He'll ask you to edit an essay if it's not to his standard then ask you to revise the whole thing. Do not take this class!!!
If you need strict linearity or handholding, he may not be the teacher for you. If you're used to getting A's with casual effort, it will be an abrupt awakening. He was very good about drawing out input from all the students. Show some initiative beyond the info he gives in class and it will pay big dividends. Very fun guy.
AWFUL really strict on essays, ridiculous essay requirements wouldn't accept my essay he will give it back to you to fix and won't let you turn it in, only allowed to turn in one essay per class period, so if you get behind you're screwed he assigns short stories to read every other class period and Are quizzed on it I think 10 other people failed
I would not recommend taking this professor. He wasn't at class a few times which left the students no chance to turn in their essays. He is a tough grader and is very selective.
Will give feedback when you ask for it, be prepared to revise! College is about improvement, he wants to help you see that. Is very clear about what he expects on the essays and gives opportunities to redo. Makes the lectures fun and interesting
I think its so funny all of the people saying his lectures are pointless. IF you write down what he has on the board, and listen to what he has to say about the stories the essays are a breeze. NOTHING he says is pointless, you just have to pay attention. By far the BEST teacher I have ever had, you gotta work, but its worth it.
Took Professor Hoppe at ACC for a whole year. First for a beginning creative writing course and then for the Advance writing workshop class held at the Rio Grande Campus. He is absolutely inspirational and makes students enhance their skills as writers. Participation is a great part of class and students are encouraged to share their work .
He is very passionate and outspoken about what he teaches which I admire. He will work with you and really wants you to succeed. DO NOT procrastinate you will struggle. I would not take the class if you hate writing there are seven required essays, exam, which you write and opt. research paper. A paper a week and cannot move on until accepted.
i have always been terrible in English but this man changed my view he is a great great teacher. the stories he chose are inspiring and actually fun to read. yes, allot of his lectures have nothing to do with your actual work but he does give you all the information you need to be successful. he is extremely passionate at what he does. take him!
He is an amazing teacher, i loved hearing his lectures. that being said, the guidelines for the essays say its open to your interpretations, when they really should say "write what he thinks and hasn't told you". if the class seems disinterested in his lecture or not paying attention, he takes it out on everyone's grade.
I took Joe for English comp 2, and American Lit. Hands down one of the greatest professors I have ever had. I may even take his creative writing class. He is honest, challenging and gives great feedback. I never wanted to miss a day of his class. His lectures are so interesting. He is genuinely passionate about teaching, and cares for his students
Joe, while obviously passionate about his field, doesn't seem to understand what its like to be a student. The classroom was constantly scolded or ignored on questions about grade or the syllabus. He favors extra info on authors over concise direction, which would be great if my knowledge about T.C. Boyle's personal life had any affect on my grade.
Do not take this professor. He sets students up for failure by "teaching" how to write analytical essays all semester long, and then throws a comprehensive research essay as the final and determining factor for the final grade. He didn't teach anything about research essays all semester. Rude, unapproachable, unhelpful, and hostile. WORST EVER.
I took this guy and he had a rule to where if one essay didn't make it through the stages of revised, edited, etc. then you weren't allowed to complete the next essay. He kept criticizing my first paper to where I had to drop or fail the class because I was too far behind. I transferred from this community college to a UNIVERSITY and aced it lol!
Do not take this class. No matter how well you think you've done, expect that Joe Hoppe will make you rewrite your essays. His grading methods make it impossible to pass if you dont turn in all weekly essays by end of the course. He only lets you turn in one essay per class, so if you get more than 2 rewrites on a paper you might as well withdraw.
This is by far the worst prof I have ever had. The workload was not that bad but he insults and criticizes your opinions and thoughts about the books, if they don't coincide with his. He claims he wants to hear you speak but he will attack your intelligence and competence. Rudest prof, save yourself and don't take his class.
Hoppe really cares about your success! It wasn't easy for sure, but his lectures are your savior! He helps you with the outline of your paper, and ideas about what to include in you paper, so you're not going into your paper completely alone. If it wasn't for him helping us getting started on the format of out paper, I would have not done so well
If you really want to learn take this course. Professor Hoppe will help you get ready for your future. He is strict but you just need to follow his instructions and youll be fine. I struggled taking this course, but I really worked hard and did what I needed to do to get an A. Dont worry if your first papers dont get accepted, go get help.
Im not a fan of writing essays but Im good at them, I have a 3.6 GPA. I took Hoppe and he requires 7 essays & 1 department exam, he wont accept essay #2 if essay #1 isint accepted, he only accepts 1 essay per class. If he doesnt accept your essay 2x already, you're going to get behind and he has deadlines, & you can either drop the class or get anF
Hoppe is the best prof Ive had - including at UT. He knows his subject and then some! Hes passionate about writing and he does a lot to help his students learn and improve. Im a much better writer because of him.
Do not take this teacher. Even if he is the only option available, don't take him. He is an unfair grader, he will only accept one paper at a time and it will make you get behind! I started with 28 people in my class and by Spring Break only had 9. He gives the ultimatum: "withdrawal or fail my class". IT IS NOT WORTH THE HEADACHE!
Dont listen to the good reviews & dont take him. All the bad reviews describe him perfectly. He lacks empathy in student work life. Even if you somehow keep up his strict essay grading and due dates, he rambles on for dear life. I cant remember a class where he didnt waste time on tangents. Not worth the stress, tears, or money.
This teacher doesn't give feedback on papers during the process of writing them, and appears to grade worse if your opinion differs from his. We even skipped an assignment in this class... syllabus not followed, and got WAY behind schedule. If you say the class is out of six papers, make it out of six and not five.
Prof. Hoppe has enjoyable classes until you go home and realize he just talked about background for the majority of the class and gave only 5 minutes of instruction on the actual assignments. His grading system is very strange, and it ends up with your entire grade resting on one paper- that is if you are one of the few who hasn't dropped out yet!
If you skated through high school and expect the same in college, beware. You actually have to pay attention, do the reading, and follow instructions in this class. If you are able to do those things, you'll be fine and you'll actually learn! MAGICAL! Joe Hoppe is hardworking and caring. He'll help you be a better writer, and be more successful.
Prof Hoppe definitely prepared me to be a stronger analytical writer. I came to class expecting to glide through another English class with ease, but after getting my first paper back I realized I actually had to try. If you want to become a better writer I highly recommend this class. Discussion time was 10/10 and he always kept us entertained.
Hoppe does not care about you or your progress. He's more interested in showing off his knowledge. Only 4-5 students of 28 remain by semester's end; this seems to be his M.O. Being a gatekeeper of quality is noble until it becomes elitist. He has forgotten that teaching is also a paid service. Don't waste your money. Find someone who will teach.
I have never had a worse professor. All the bad reviews explain him perfectly. My GPA suffered because he simply disagreed with my opinion. Don't think you can succeed in his class because you hold yourself in high regard. I always excelled in English and he basically failed me for me doing my final essay over a subject he disagreed with. Awful.
Words can't describe how terrible of a prof he is. 3-4 students remained out of 28 bc it is easy to fail if you don't write what HE wants. He is extremely rude and set on his opinions but hides it under a persona of a cool/funny guy. He's not. You will learn by the end of the semester he is only there to fulfill a deep inferiority complex he has.
Professor Hoppe is absolutely phenomenal. I personally don't care for English as a subject and have always viewed it as an obstacle, but his approach to teaching & his lectures made comp 2 enjoyable & I looked forward to his lectures. Participation is extremely important and expect to write lots of papers, but he is accessible and very helpful.
Professor Hoppe was an great teacher! he is very passionate about his classes, and expects participation from EVERYONE! dont let that scare you he creates a wonderful open discussion for every story. quizzes are daily but very easy, a good way to get grade up so SHOW UP! I loved his class so much! very understanding, interesting sense of humor!
During many of the lectures you will take it will become apparent that slightly off-topic rants, typically about war, are very common. Do not expect specific grading criteria or feedback on papers, such as my last paper for a "reflective essay" which had one and only line "Please withdraw if you don't want to receive an F." with no further support.
Joe Hoppe was the worst professor I have ever had. DO NOT REGISTER FOR HIS CLASSES. He is incredibly rude and unhelpful, when you correct the papers he gives back, he just finds more errors. Does not work with students and frequently advises to withdraw.
Joe Hoppe inspired me to be a better student and human while putting me on a path that led to graduating from a proper university and a flourishing career. Pay attention to the lessons and do the work, you will benefit!
By far one of the worst professors I've had. I've made As in many other writing classes and have been told I write well, but for some reason he seemed overly critical of my writing. He also was extremely rude when I approached him asking how I could do better and said I wanted to figure out how to improve. I regret taking this class.
