The teacher talks down to his students, and treats them like kindergardens. If you are forced into a basic math class, expect to hear the phrase, "and we just don't do that, that's silly stuff." often. When you get to factoring, go to another
very helpful, really into teaching us, demanding, makes us work
Joe is a very interesting person. We teach him new words everyday, but dont worry, there not bad words. The class is dope and totally ill.
He talks down to his students and puts stuff on the test that he never went over. He doesn't go over anything and is very unhelpful if you don't understand the material. I dropped his class
Joe is a very interesting professor, even during finals he kept a very optimistic approach on everything. He is an extremely helpful man, I would definatly take him again, and probably will. He is a great instructor, tutor...etc.
Joe is probably the best professor at SCC. He knows what he teaches inside and out and it is very obvious that he wants he students to succeed. His class is VERY challenging; expect to work and learn a lot from his class. Altogether, a VERY interesting
If you have a question, and he feels you should know the answer, be ready for a rude response.
i liked him for an instructor a lot but expect a TON of work in course. he was really fast but i understood him
Professor Howe makes every effort to make hard material easy to grasp. Even if you don't do well on an exam, he still optimistic about your success in the course. Not only is he available and helpful during office hours, he also is a blast during class. Never thought I enjoy a math class this much!
One of the worst professors I've ever had. I dropped his pre-cal class with a 42%. He's rude and belligerent if you either don't know something or don't know it his way. I currently have a 96% in Calc II at another school. You tried, but you couldn't stop me. Don't let him get the best of you.
Not helpful, he acts like you are stupid if you don't already know the material. I dropped because I could not keep a C in the class.
He loves to make struggling kids feel like idiots. I guess upscale community college teachers shouldn't have to expect to deal with kids who aren't geniuses - and he sure lets you know it.
Math is not my subject, but need for degree. Joe is great he knows his stuff. He will make you work but you will be ready for the next class. I wish he could teach all my classes. He makes it fun! Thanks Joe!
I have never had a problem in math until I took this class. He was no help what so ever, I missed the class one time and called him in advanced for the homework and notes, all he has is what he writes on the board, out of luck.I never met a teacher who was so unwilling to help his students succeed.
This class was difficult. I manage a solid B range in math and I was getting 50% on every exam (with tutors). I ended up dropping the class and taking it at the four year college I'm at now. 1/4 of the material he taught wasn't even mentioned in my class...he makes passing this class very difficult.
I got my C but worked hard for it. You have to use office hours a lot. he's really helpful 1 on 1. he doesn't take excuses so don't try any. real good at his job.
3rd time taking course then it finally clicked we went really fast but i liked him better than my other teachers
Highly recommended! Joe is a great teacher, he really makes you work hard in his class. He knows his students very well, keeps track of how well they do, and very helpful at his office hours. Hard work pays off in his class. Joe pushes his students very hard throught the semestr to see how far they can go, be ready for this. Do NOT give up!
I took Beginning Algebra, Intermediate Algebra and College Algebra with Joe. After my first algebra class with him I knew that I wanted him to be the instructor for the rest of them! He is a great instructor who is there to teach a tough math! I got A's!! Do your homework and reviews (exp.of whats on test) and you will do great in his class!!
I took this class in the summer. I had to work my ass off in the class, had a test every week, seeing the tutor every day etc. It's intense but its possible to pull a B if you try.
This guy was very condescending and would never look his students in the eye. I guess hard to face someone when you know that you secretly don't care. Passed every single math class i took after pre-calc with no teacher issues.
This class was a joke for me, I should have been in a higher class. Some people still found it hard. He is a good teacher, very clear, and teaches you new ways at solving problems. very flamboyant, kind of metrosexual, but has a hot wife....
not a good teacher to take
Joe is very helpful. Math is hard to make interesting but at least he makes it more clear. He expects you to do your work but he gives review work and extra credit for doing it. He also gives extra credit on each test and drops your lowest test score.
Joe Howe is by the far the best instructor at St. Charles! By demanding alot from students he reinforces are problem solving skills and helps do things in math that before we thought impossible. Do not take if you want a blow off course. Do take if you want clear instruction and to be adequately prepared for the following course.

Thanks for the help
I had Joe for 6 math classes. He truly is a great teacher, because he is very demanding. I wish my professors at the university were more like him. His methods forced me to use what I learned from the class in problems outside of the book. Best professor I've ever had.
I think he sucks at being a teacher. he never really explains anything. i would never take another class that he teaches ever again.
Very good professor. His classes are definitely challenging as all Mathematics courses SHOULD be. He definitely prepared me for the rest of the Calc sequence. Tests are hard but very fair, similiar to assigned homework and reviews. He also encourages coming to his office hours which proves to be very helpful. One of the best teachers I've ever had!
One of the best instructors I ever had. You must do homework and visit office hours to pass.
went on and on about getting class out of class instead of teaching. didnt review. would just give you a packet to do over the weekend. test on mondays. couldnt ask questions for review packet, even if you did it before the test
You don't realize how good of a teacher Joe is until you have had someone else. I wish I could have Joe for all of my classes. DO NOT take if you want an easy A. You will work hard for every point earned.
He was very hard. I went to the ace center everyday. I still got a C.
Didn't teach--just did problems. On tests must show all work or lots of points off.
Not fair with partial credit at all! Missed one small number in a 5 part question, which. He took off half of the points for the entire question! ARGH!
Lectures are clear but he is ridiculous with taking off points on tests when you miss something small (particularly frustrating at the calculus level where your test may be <10 questions) You have a whole page of setting up the problem correctly but you make a careless algebra misitake while solving the problem and you'll get a 4/12 on the problem.
I thought Howe was an incredible teacher. Yes he was a little snippy in personality but he would always make sure that the class understood what he was teaching. He did do problems from the chapter's homework so you had examples to work from that night. After my next algebra teacher, I realized what a thorough teacher Howe was.
I was set to love Howe but I'm half way through statistics and I'm already disappointed with him. He assigns even# problems but provides no answers. He throws new twists on tests. I can live with those but HE DOESN'T ACTUALLY TEACH! He writes down a formula and does a few problems. I respect the man but he needs to brush up on teaching techniques.
This is the best professor for intermediate and college algebra. He explains everything completely and is a much better instructor than Mr. Christianson(do not take this nut.)
This guy is undoubtedly the worst instructor I've ever encountered. After going on to a real university and excelling in math after having a lower grade in his class shows how flawed his class is. The class has a bad tone with his sharp speaking and cocky attitude. Don't take math here, its overrated.
This guy knows his math, but is just NOT a good teacher. I am usually an A student, and put everything into even the hardest class. But "Joe" is by far the most pretentious and pompous person(not just in school)that I've ever met."Joe" needs to learn that he is just another human being, lose his God complex, and realize he didn't make it to the ivy!
He was my teacher from Precalc to DFQ. He is the best teacher i ever had. I'll say if you want to learn math and willing to work he is the best teacher. If not you will end up saying his the worse teacher like all other comments. In my point of view everyone that sad he is a bad teacher are the ones go partying all the time never study!!!
would help if more clear.
great teacher!
I hated him!! You can tell he knows math but definitely cannot teach! I am a student that is willing to learn and I sure wasn't learning in this class. He would give 2 examples and expect you to do a whole chapter! If your not that great at math I suggest you find another teacher asap!!!!!
This is the worst professor for math I have ever had. You are basically your own teacher. He does not explain anything, and the online program that you are required to use is a joke. Howeever, he is more than willing to help you in his spare time, which is a major plus. But if you are on a busy schedule, it is very difficult to recieve a good grade
Horrible teacher! Very smart and knows his math but does not have teaching skills. Would give 2 examples of problems for entire chapter and expect you to know all the problems that were not taught. Would also get very frustrated if class was asking to many questions about homework. Passed the class but had the help of another math teacher.
Absolutely horrific. He constantly says alright and mkay, a skewed version of Mr. Mackey on South Park. He rarely teaches and instead gives you a few examples that he works out entirely too fast. He takes off points for small mistakes causing the tests to be nearly impossible to do well on unless you are all ready great at Math, which I am not.
It's unfortunate that he has such a lack of understanding in economics and finance, the only two math-related fields that matter in the real world. All of his students that go into business are in for a rude awakening.
Great Teacher. Gives hard problems to conquer, but tests over relativly easy problems. Very helpful in making sure you understand the material but does have a snippy personal attitude
Moves too fast. Gives homework But doesn't teach on it until after the homework is due. I dropped the class and took it with another teacher and passed with no problem.
i think he is a nice teacher althouth everybody hates him.. but i like him as a teacher
I took him for FastTrack beginning and intermediate algebra. This class was not meant for people who are bad at math, but just need a very fast refresher. Pretty much if you never took algebra 2 and got a good grade without trying in high school, don't take this class. That being said his teaching style is visual/kinetic which I found to help me.
FAST-TRACK is extremely fast - keep up with the homework or die trying. Exams are full of curve-balls. If you're not a math major, be prepared to struggle. Helpful and organized his methods DO help you learn. BEWARE of exams and don't miss a single class.
Very clear, concise, and organized. I had a B average in the class, but after the final ended up with an A (hmm!). I think that Professor Howe may bump up grades in the summer if you complete all of your homework and have perfect attendance. There weren't many of us who did, so my suggestion is to be one of those people and you may benefit greatly!
Very organized and very clear , always gave homework and always reminded of important due dates and assignments !!
HE is good smart, but he so full of himself and dont dare to ask any questions to him. He will put you down so bad, if he dont like you. He needs to be more humble and understand that there are kids who actually have some problems and he is there to solve them rather than judging them. Partial grading.
Best math teacher I have ever had. I have never been good at math but I easily got a B in his class. He is very helpful and honestly wants everyone to pass. If you attend class and do the homework there is no way you wont pass. He's always willing to help when you need it and provides opportunities for extra credit.
All you do is go to class, sit down, do your work, and leave. He doesn't talk to you or care to know your name. Would not recommend an online math class at all. You have to get a 80% or higher or you fail. It is the worst.
If you want a teacher to make you feel bad about yourself, hes your guy.
Never any help. Even during class he just told us to go to the ACE center, and moved on with the material even when the class was still behind
I took the 5-day course, which is a bit of a workload (4 1/2 hours each day) and included like 4-quizzes each night (answers can only be found in the book), in-class works, and a two page essay/presentation on the fifth day. He really talked up about how big of a deal it was, but I think everyone that made an attempt on all assignments got an A.
Would not help. Told you to talk to Kim in the ACE center. Had to talk him into doing homework problems. Rushed through examples during lecture and would''t explain if asked again.
He is a big examples guys. He wont fully complete problems ether. Tests are really hard. He is also full of himself.
He goes really fast and expects you to already know the material. Homework takes at least four hours on a good day. Test are extremely tough.
Professor Howe is a very left brained person. He is very particular about the methods and the tests. His MAT 098-121 Fast Track course is by far the hardest and most time consuming class I've ever taken. Joe Howe is also the best math teacher I've ever had. If you have any sort of common sense or discipline you should be successful.
As a student in his class currently, he is not a very thorough teacher. In my opinion I was left to be confused a lot of the time on his grading system. He's hard to follow on his teaching. I did not find his college 101 class helpful at all. I could have been better off teaching myself.
Really good when it comes to explaining things, but if you don't show up, you'll fail. He's extremely sassy but wants his students to pass. If you have questions, he is willing to help. Explains things very clearly as well.
Joe is a great math professor! He explains things very clearly and is more than willing to help you more if you need it! He is picky about some things, but not as bad as some teachers I've had.. Lectures are very entertaining, which is more than can be said for most Calculus classes, and Joe is a very unique person, so it makes things fun!
Joe's notes are straight out of the textbook. He offered extra credit on tests if you attended the test reviews and completed the review. Bookwork and MyMathLab homework was assignments every night, but was very helpful when it came to tests.
Probably the worst math professor I've had. Does not know how to teach. When doing notes he only does one problem per subject and in the most simple way. The questions on the tests are so much harder than what he has you study for
He clears his throat every other word. Kind of annoying. He's not very clear, he kind of beats around the bush with anything he says. However, he is not a tough grader. As long as you show up and do the quizzes it's an easy A.
Joe is a very helpful teacher who knows what he is talking about. Of course you must work a little but Joe gives test reviews with solution guides for every test up until calculus III. Expect reviews to be harder than the test. Definitely one of the easier math instructors.
Howe is a really great teacher if you are willing to put in the effort. He is crystal clear on what he wants vs what he doesn't want and he will answer questions you have at the beginning of the class, which is helpful. He also gives reviews that are usually much harder than his tests. Do all of the homework and reviews and you'll pass no problem.
Howe really seems to beat around the bush with directions and isn't very clear on what he wants you to do. I'd like it if he were more direct. I took the 9 day course, so lots of homework was expected. Attendance is mandatory to pass the class.
Joe clears his threat every other sentence which gets annoying. He only does one simple example for every subject. You can't pass his class unless you show up to class everyday and there's A LOT of homework. He is rambles on about things that have nothing to do with the class. I was in the ACE center every week for his class.
I've taken 2 classes now that were taught by Joe Howe, COL 101 and MAT 098. Joe is very straight forward with his expectations and he does not tolerate laziness or immaturity. I LOVED that about him!! I honestly hated having sooooo much homework every night BUT I will tell you that come test time I was grateful for it! He's a great teacher and although he can seem a little intimidating at times I believe he really does care. Bottom line is if you don't show up to class and you don't do your work you won't pass!! Show up on time and do your homework and you'll get along with Joe just fine!
Howe is a great math teacher. Very organized and gets everything done on time. If you come to every class, do homework, and go to the study sessions before the test you'll receive an easy A.
He's not good. don't take him.
Howe is laid-back but can be sassy sometimes. He doesn't make any of the assignments difficult and is willing to answer questions. I felt bad that he had to deal with some inconsiderate, rude students in the class, but other than that, he made COL101 helpful. He does notebook checks but super easy to pass, just do the work.
So he is really good at being off topic all the time, especially when you're taking a summer class with him and are on a time crunch. Gives a ton of homework including projects on Mathematica which hardly have to do with calculus and is just busy work for you to do. He is not clear at all on what he wants on the directions within the projects aswel
Young teacher who seems stressed and starts early. He spends his whole lecture rewriting his notes from his little notepad to the board. There is no time allowed to ask questions, as he writes fast, and mumbles on what to do. His notes are hard to read, and the hour is spent copying as fast as you can what he has written on the board.
Joe Howe is a good teacher, you always know whats going to be on a test so they're really easy to study for! Gives 8 tests a semester and usually has 12 points of extra credit per test. Lectures are great because he gives in depth explanations and examples and plenty of time to ask questions. Has a lot of homework but youll be prepared for tests.(:
I think I would like Professor Howe more as a person then I would a professor. He really wants students to succeed but he's very peculiar about how things are done and not that understanding. Made an overall easy course kind of unbearable but then again, College 101 itself is kind of unnecessary so not really his fault there.
If you work hard, Joe will respect and be there for you. He expects you to give 110%, but is understanding that things happen in life. He is good at giving lots of partial credit and does not go over anything he does not feel is important for you to learn. Just remember, if you have him as a professor, NO CELL PHONES! that is his #1 pet peve
Joe will respect you and help you if you work for your grade. He expects you to work, but is understanding that things happen in life. He is good at giving lots of partial credit and does not go over anything he does not feel is important for you to learn. Just remember, if you have him as a professor, NO CELL PHONES! that is his #1 pet peve
This is Calculus, be ready to work hard. Professor Howe is a great teacher who is fair. Very straightforward, no surprises on the tests. Willing to help outside of class.
I had Joe for two of my math classes and he was never happy when someone would show up during his office hours. I do know some people that love the way he teaches, but for me, he moves too fast and assumes students know what he is talking about. Will not be taking any more math classes at SCC because of him.
He was a good professor I had in 098 and then had in for 121 but I failed his 121 because he was just really hard and just assumes that everyone gets everything. Yes, he asks if everyone understands but sometimes get's put out. For 098 I would take him but any higher just assume u r gonna spend a lot of money. Lots of hw and HARD TESTS. 7 OF THEM.
Joe responds to emails quickly and has set office hours that he is there for, but don't expect much else. He is never overtly rude, but also won't go out of his way to help you succeed. Ex: Take the final and want to know your grade? He won't email it to you, post it to canvas, or meet with you. You know your final grade when it posts on connect
Professor Howe was one of my favorite math teachers Ive ever had. He presented everything in an easy to understand way, and with certain topics presented multiple ways to solve a problem. He really describes his thinking process in class for solving more complicated problems which helps IMMENSELY in solving them by yourself.
Joe is a very patient and kind man. His lectures were very clear and he'd often ask for left-over problems from homework and presents them on the board. The tests were super hard, but I could not get anything from the test stuff. I worked my ass off trying to pass. I had to drop the class. I couldn't ask for a better math teacher than Joe.
Seems like a decent man, but unfortunately not a decent teacher. Given homework over material not explained in class, skips TONS of info needed to test well, and when info is given he manages to gloss over it making me feel like, what did I just pay to learn?? Left feeling frustrated to no end. DO NOT TAKE
Very fair grader. He gives a reasonable amount of homework, the lectures are easy to follow, he is open to questions, gives reviews for each test that are very helpful for the test, and gives extra credit on the test if you did the review and went to the ACE center. The amount of effort you put in will determine you grade in this class.
this professor makes me want to commit slip and slide
Get your book, do the home work, and you will get an A.
he sucks 0/10. most disrespectful, unpleasant professor I've ever had. he'd get major attitude in zoom lectures when questions were asked, even if it was for clarification. He was so hard to get help from. He wouldn't answer questions asked about material, but he'd make up answers or say "i think this is right" "I'm not too sure" DO NOT TAKE HIM!
makes no effort to help his students. When asked a question walks around it the whole purpose of the question. Is rude and gets an attitude. Wanted to rate him a 0 but it wouldn't allow it
Definitely one of the worst classes I have ever taken. He uses software called My Math Lab so all homework and tests will be through that software. He is a very monotone boring professor who doesn't like to take questions or admit he made a mistake. You have to teach yourself the material. Seems nice but not a good prof. Rec. chosing dif prof.
Joe Howe does NOT lecture for his online college algebra class. He just takes videos of older teachers lecturing off youtube and gives you certain chapters in the book to read if you'd like to. He's quick to respond to email, however, I'd take in person college algebra before I have to take Joe Howe's class again.
If you take calc with him your going to work hard. all the homework is online and you can get a walkthrough with alternate questions to help you solve them. I like how he teaches, hes very precise if you know what i mean. no surprises on the tests thanks to the study guide, there will be proofs, he wont waste class time if it cant be on the test.
He gives a lot of homework and projects. For a 3 hour class it takes a lot of time. Your algebra and calculus need to be solid. Partial credit is difficult to earn. I would take him again but be ready for a tough semester.
Helpful, responds to email, and sends out weekly reminders of upcoming due dates.
He is great 10/10
Great at teaching!
Monotone voice from the few days I took, but explained things very well. Ended up dropping the class because high school instructors didn't teach me the PreReqs for this class. Very willing to help students if you make the effort to get additional help.
He doesn't teach the class but uses random videos in repeat for the homework. You can't really learn its way too hard. First part of the semester I was fine but now my grade keeps dropping after every test. Their is a test every week and homework almost every other day even on holiday breaks.
The professor has a specific teaching style, but engaging with it can pay off. Attend lectures, use the textbook, and try unstuck ai for study prep - it's a helpful tool alongside other resources like ChatGPT. The class is challenging, but the professor is willing to assist students who make the effort.
Best professor I've had in a long time. Refreshing approach to Calculus I in a way that engages students. Is honest about what people need to do to succeed and isn't afraid to let it be known. Engages students in lectures with personal anecdotes to consolidate the subject matter, overall engaging lectures that are worth attending.
I really enjoyed his lectures, he is very straight to the point.
All you learn is from Aleks, which is a good tool for extra help, but should not be the main resource. He doens't respond to emails and the final is information not covered in the review. This class literally made me cry on a weekly basis.
Professor Howe is by far the best math teacher I have ever had. His lectures are slow enough so that you can sit and think about the material. Yet, he is never behind schedule and will not speed up to fit something. He also throws in his 'catchphrases' that only get funnier with time. I would recommend professor Howe to anyone.
