Joe is very knowledgeable and entertaining. His classes do require a lot of work, but not more than is reasonable for graduate courses. His grading is VERY random so don't take it personally.
Joe is the reason that I made it through my first quarter in the iSchool. LIS 520 was the reason I would roll out of bed in the morning. He's passionate, knowledgeable and realistic. If you are in the iSchool right now and wondering if you should take that class with Joe Janes, wonder no more. TAKE IT!
Possibly one of the best professors I've ever had. Janes is hilarious and so passionate about what he teaches. I automatically felt comfortable and welcome in his class
Great professor, really awesome lectures. The quizzes are really hard and you need to study for them. Also, don't skip lecture because a lot of the quiz information is only mentioned there! Other than the hard quizzes this class was really fun.
Joe is an amazing lecturer, and the project is fun to work on. However, the reading assignments and the papers are often very difficult to do well on. The TAs are responsible for grading papers and assignments and do a very poor job at clarifying exactly what they are looking for. In addition, the quizzes include content that isn't covered.
Joe Janes is very charismatic and engaging. Some of the readings, discussions and quizzes are thought provoking and he's a great "intro" to the field. BUT he has very little professional experience to draw on, and the bulk of his academic interests are no longer cutting edge so there is a limit to the depth of knowledge that you can gain.
Professor Janes is an all-around nice guy. He cares about his students but some aspects of the class were difficult. You complete 3 quizzes, many group deliverables, 2 papers, and a final group projects. Quizzes were impossible so go to TA offices hours beforehand for help.
Amazing professor. Make sure you go to every lecture or else you will struggle on the quizzes. They are interesting to go to and he never makes them boring. Very approachable outside of class and I would definitely take a class with him again. Class is group project based so hope the people you are paired with help with the project.
Like others have said, very charismatic, loves to hear his own voice, very knowledgeable and an overly harsh grader. Honestly, I would have learned just as much reading a book on the subject of the class he taught (the history of librarianship) than listening to his tangential lectures on who he knows and has met in the field over the years.
The quizzes were kinda hard at times and because you need a 97% in the class for a 4.0 every point matters so actually watch the lectures while taking the quiz (its open note). No final just a big project that takes long if you have a bad group. if you win best project award your grade gets boosted 1%! Awesome lectures too.
Amazing teacher. I loved his lectures because he always had interesting stories and ideas to share. The class included asynchronous lectures, 3 quizzes, two papers, and a group project. The class is manageable if you stay on top of your work. Overall, an engaging class with an awesome professor!
Prof Janes is an awesome professor! I was in one of his first classes to teach in person since the pandemic and he was very excited and engaging with lectures. Lots of reading assignments but theyre pretty easy. Main focus is on the group project that you will work on most of the time during that class.
The class was engaging, but the grading was harsher than other HONORS classes at UW. The requirements/rubrics for written assignments were vague & grades felt subjective. Submissions are commented on (criticized) at length by Prof Janes. Do not take Prof Janes if you are looking for an easy 4.0 or can't take criticism. Also, expect long readings.
Janes is the type of professor that asks a rhetorical question but wants a very specific answer. Lectures are all over the place, and sometimes hard to follow. Grading is tough and definitely subjective. Gives VERY vague writing prompts and tells you to think outside of the box but is looking for a specific response that aligns with his thinking.
the lectures are super engaging and I always enjoyed going to the lectures, but the three exams can be filled with super random questions that stem from something he mentions for a second in class so attending lectures and taking detailed notes is very important to succeed. The group project is not too bad, but does require a solid time commitment
The course topic was interesting and Janes is very enthusiastic about the class material but lectures were jammed packed with content, disorganized, and kind of hard to follow. I also felt like his grading was nitpicky and subjective, like others mentioned before.
Lectures were very engaging and Janes is a funny, caring professor. Make sure to attend class, he doesn't put all the information on slides and exams ask specific questions from lectures. Workload is definitely doable if you manage your time well. However, lectures weren't recorded which was frustrating because Covid still exists.
Prof Janes is super nice (just don't be in the front on your phone during lecture, he WILL call you out). He is very accessible and cares a lot about making his lectures interesting and relevant. The group project is a very important part of your grade so make sure everyone is doing their part.
Refused to record lectures as class was "heavily discussion based" but we have not had a single group discussion in lecture. Prof just rambles on and on for two hours and likes to force people to listen to him. Only reason classes aren't recorded. Also does not wear a mask even when near people lecturing. AVOID
Janes is extremely unaccommodating about recording lectures for students who feel uncomfortable attending a lecture hall with 200 people during a pandemic. It's inconsiderate and disregards immunocompromised students without DRS. All he does is ramble in his lecture anyways.Weird tests that you arent prepared for too
Really bad course with tons of work to do and tough exams as well as serious grading standard.
As two previous comments stated, Janes is very unaccommodating and inconsiderate regarding lecture recording despite a LOT of students asking him to do so during the peak of Omicron. His lectures are tedious and rambling all over, tests are hard to study for, which isn't what a 200 level class should be. Would avoid Janes at all costs.
He's ok. Kind of condescending and definitely unaccommodating. The tests are random and slightly weird, but the class overall is extremely easy. Wouldn't mind taking him again, but I also wouldn't necessarily recommend him.
take the other info 200 professors, not him!!!! janes talks so much it will break your brain!! super hard to take notes and is not accommodating!
The lecture is fun and engaging but there is a lot of unnecessary readings for pre-class work (eg: the answer you need is probably just in a paragraph but he will give you a ten-paged papers to read). The quiz is tricky: it's easy to answer but easy to get wrong too (Make a mistake then you are doomed!)
The content is easy but Prof. Janes makes it hard. Tons of readings on the first half of the quarter. Got reading responses, group projects, and exams. Exams focus on those minor differences on different concepts, and the wording of some questions are confusing. Lectures not useful as he just chats about unrelated stuffs and laughs 80% of the time.
take info200 bt no Joe the content is not difficult and he makes the exam really difficult. I try to focus on the class but he always talks thousands of examples makes the content more messy
His lectures are very interesting/eye opening. The exams are easy as long as you took notes(open note). Class was structured really well
Lots of reading, confusing tests, and weird laughs 80% of the class. He is the only professor with a test for info200, an unnecessary level of difficulty for a level 200 class. And no recording (I guess he wanted to feel attention and force students to attend the class), which is unaccommodating. Never take his sections or wish you luck.
Janes talks way too much and is incredibly pedantic. There are weekly assignments where you get a 10-50 pg reading and fill out questions. There are 3 contextual vocab exams (lecture+reading questions). There is a quarter long group proj and 1500 word essay. If you have the option, take Amy Ko instead.
one of the Only professors on campus who does not allow recording for students, one of only a few of the professors of Info 200 who have major tests. Do not recommend it, for real.
Do not take his class, or be ready to read, Wes Eli King would be a better choice.
No recording, unaccommodating. If you want a good grade, don't come to this section. unnecessary difficult for 200 intro level. Grading is harsh, lots of work, The Professor just wants to make the grading harsh for everyone so that he can punish those who don't spend over 15 hours studying in this class, bad experience. truly disappointed
Pretty difficult class. I'm one of the (very few) students on track for a 3.9 or 4.0, but have spent too much time on this class. First half of the quarter is 10-50 page readings with responses due every Tue/Thur before class. Quizzes are ridiculous with obscure questions. Lectures are beyond boring but you must attend because they're not recorded.
Do not Recommend it, I meant he makes this class unnecessarily difficult, and his grading of everything is ambiguous. When you try to argue with TAs or the professor, they give worthless opinions that indicates their grading is the truth in any way. TAs are harsh grader and the Professor gives confusing gradings critics; do not take Joseph's class.
boring lecture, hard grading, and arrogant attitude
awful
The lectures are so boring, and it's like listening to someone talk about themselves for 4 hours a week. You're expected to do a lot of reading to "learn", but it's outdated, very technical, and dense. I've felt like majority of what was being 'taught' during class was common sense, and wish technical terms were more focused upon instead.
Professor Joseph never listened to students' opinions on class structure and content; the professor made this class unnecessarily hard. It is not like chem or biology's content difficult, it is weird wording that intentionally making you sick. And no recording, which is not accommodating. I don't know why he still not fired after years of complaint
I hope Professor Joseph can leave his arrogant attitude regarding class structure aside, and really make student interested in the class content instead of forcing them to by no recording, harsh grading, and loads of readings.
Never come to his class.
Worst class ever. Choose his class and your GPA's lower than the center of the earth.
There is no way to study for the exams. Janes tries to grade on "understanding" but his execution of it is pretty bad. No attendance taken in lectures but you are going to have a difficult time on exams because he tests on specific things he mentioned in the lectures. His slides are useless, they are like speaker notes. He's also full of himself.
Worst teacher ever. Never knew professors would matter that much until I had him. his class structure was the worst. Didn't teach us much, slides were useless, and the exams did not make sense. No way to prepare, even if the content was so easy. He just loves to talk about his husband all the time. Gradings are the info standard grading.
Harsh grading, unclear rubrics, and your grade depends on whether you get a good group for your final project. Class is interesting if you like sitting there wasting your time listening to stories of his musings and husband. Lectures are not recorded & I stopped going, still did just okay. Apparently he's the only INFO 200 prof that has exams.
He's a really nice professor and this class is actually a really nice intro to informatics concept, it's just that his tests are pretty hard and no one really knows how to prep for them.
If you have the possibility, please take any other professor, trust me it would be better then with him. Joe is good at lecture, I will admit that, but his grading and the EXAMS can be extremely confusing. I hated his policy of "no recording lecture", which he list is because the lecture collaborated which they are like 5-10% of the time.
Gives midterms that have answers that are very controversial and can be argued. He yaps in class and doesn't actually talk about stuff on the tests. His homeworks are out of 10, so one pt off would tank your grade.
The workload for this class is just way too much. We have about 2 small assignments a week, a big group project, a medium-sized individual project, an essay, and 3 exams. Which in my opinion is just way too much given what the content of the class and what he covers in lecture (which is basically nothing btw).
This class was seriously a waste of time. Half the lecture is spent talking about his husband. The assigenmts require you to read 10-50 pages and the quizzes dont make any sense, you can't study for them, no study guide he even says " your gonna ask me how to study I'm going to tell you, you can't" Harsh grading, heavily group project oriented.
Readings are crazy long. All he does in lecture is tell stories about him and husband. Makes me sleepy
Lectures are tedious. Irrelevant tangents. Exam questions focus on lecture "discussions" and ambiguous technicalities, making it difficult to score high. Material lacks depth. Prof's lecture style comes off as arrogant and cocky. Quarter-long project is unnecessarily time-consuming. Random weird overcomplicated assignments. Don't take this class!!!
was excited to take info 200 this quarter but am very disappointed with this class so far :( exams are impossible to study for, the prof even says there is no way prepare and that you just have to "look around" for examples of how informatics exists in the world. time consuming class for no reason, prof makes it 100x harder than it needs to be.
Professor Janes really cares about his students a lot and is usually pretty responsive and willing to answer your questions. If I were to complain though, he tends to ramble a lot in lectures making it a bit difficult to take notes the that you need to study to do well on quizzes. The content itself isn't difficult but he makes it hard.
The course's objective is incredibly interesting, but his execution is lackluster at best and confusing at worst. There is simply no way to prepare for the exams, even admitted by the professor & TAs. It is entirely unacceptable. I love informatics, loved guest lectures, but this version of the course is a shameful representation. Take another prof
I think he's just not the type of professor that I learn best with. I like having slides that contain most if not all of the material (so I can refer back), and recordings of the lectures. He talks a lot, and sometimes I can get sidetracked because his lectures are very distracting (he talks about many things that do not pertain to class material).
Probably the best professor I have had at UW. His lectures are very engaging and makes class fun to attend. I agree with others that the exams can be tricky but they are not that bad at all (if you think these exams are hard, try taking an upper level math or physics class haha) so I still think he is an amazing professor. I would recommend for 200
He was extremely rude to his students during lecture, and his lectures itself were very hard to follow on with. A lot of class times felt unprepared, and it never felt super worth it to attend class. I feel as though I could not get comfortable with him and rely on his as a professor.
just don't take
Honestly I would ignore the bad reviews on Professor Janes. I came into the class really hesitant after reading the reviews but I genuinely had one of my best classes so far. The test could be difficult if you don't come to lectures at all. The test is easy compared to the other STEM classes so just go to class and listen to Professor Janes.
Do whatever you can to get the other Informatics teacher at UW. With the lectures being 2 hours long you would think he would value our time, but no. He sits there and talks about random articles with little to no connection to the class. The tests are impossible to prepare for. You get cheat sheets but still somehow you can't get more than a 70%.
I am not sure why there are any good reviews at all of this prof, I would honestly just ignore them. The tests are not "difficult", they seem like common sense but then get marked wrong on specificities/ technicalities/ random thing that was mentioned once in lecture. So although the material is "easy", it is still very common to score only 70/80%
Nothing more insufferable than a man who just likes to hear himself talk. Boring lectures.
Janes' lectures are pretty interesting and engaging. Although attendance isn't mandatory, it's important that you attend them and take notes because they'll be helpful on exams. The only downside is the exams. The exams are all multiple-choice but it can get confusing and hard, and there's no way to study for it other than outside resources.
extremely rude and disrespectful. Unclear grading standards and belittling to students writing without offering any constructive criticisms, simply disrespectful. Lectures are long and boring, not everyone likes documents that much!! Only take if you want a boring professor.
No recordings for the class so you are unable to look back for more information on materials other than the provided slides with only pictures. It is almost impossible to study for the quizzes and the wording on them are tricky as well.
Dr Janes gives interesting, engaging, if sometimes rambling, lectures about material, but it doesn't matter, no quizzes/tests. He's truly excited about documents, makes "The Record of Us All" fun, class discussions were great. LOTS of reading each week, but most is interesting. Checks and answers emails well, and office hours also very accessible.
Really traumatized experienced in his class. There's nothing more insufferable than listening to a man who likes to talk to himself. I literally learn nothing in his class and feel like my tuition is eaten by dog. REALLY NOT ENCOURAGED. ONLY TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU ARE DONE WITH YOUR LIFE AND WANT TO TRY WHAT HELL FEELS LIKE IN ADVANCE.
Avoid if you can! Quizzes are impossible to study for and lots of assignments (Reading Responses, Essay, Redesign Project, Final Project) compared to what I hear from other INFO 200 classes. The lectures are not recorded and since quizzes are based off of small details that he mentions in class, you kind of need to attend every class.
Negative reviews on here are accurate. Claims that tests cannot be studied for. Wording on them is tricky even though the material is easy, and is based on small details mentioned in long lectures where not a lot of actual content is covered. Large quarter-long group project is worth a lot of the grade. Nice enough, but would not take again.
Bad reviews are TRUE!!! Took his info 200 and 357, and I would NOT recommend taking any of his classes. He's a tough grader, boring lecturing, and the criteria and rubric are not clear.
He is impossible to deal with—unreasonable, narcissistic, and obsessed with talking about his husband, who gets tied into almost every lecture. The grading is unclear and the lectures are long, boring, and mostly irrelevant. By the end, I learned more about his personal life than the course material. Avoid this class at all costs!
I started this class excited due to the professors humor during lectures, although grew to significantly dislike it. Assignments were pointless, didn't have clear expectations, grading was harsh and his OH's are honestly intimidating. 3 tests throughout the course (open-note) although the answers are based on his perception. Hard final project.
Please take any other prof for INFO 200; from my understanding, all of them are so much better at teaching and engaging with students. I think he is a good lecturer, but his expectations are unclear, and he is often a harsh grader.
If you see people saying that he rambles alot, then PLEASE BELIEVE THEM. It's incredibly challenging to study for the exams within this class. all that's being taught are DEFINITIONS. Application of these definitions are briefly mentioned, but application's the whole test. Lectures aren't recorded, so attendance is technically mandatory.
Professor Janes is super nice and his lectures are really fun and engaging, but the exams are unnecessarily hard because even if you have the slides for tests, they often won't have definitions on there and the wording on the exams are bad. also, a lot of the grade is based on exams and the group project, so if you have a bad group you're screwed
Amazing lectures that are hilarious and inspirational eliminates needs to take notes for exams. Focus and listen to the fundamental underlying ideas covered in lecture, you will be fine. There is a reason his lectures a built different from others and maintains your attention span for the full 2 hours. I strongly recommend taking Dr. Joseph Janes.
has an ego and expects respect but does not give it in return. someone's phone went off in class which happens, but he publicly humiliated the person by staring them dead in the eyes for a good 30 seconds. so unnecessary. the exams are horrible, the lectures aren't recorded, and overall his class is NOT worth taking.
Boring lectures, tries to be relatable. Class material is dry and most people could self study this course easily.
This class was informing and fun! If you pay attention during the lectures and do the small readings, you'll understand the concepts for the exams easily. If you zone out and scroll all lecture like most of the class does, you might have a hard time, as you should. The group project is hit-or-miss, but you get graded individually, which helps a lot
Underrated professor - gets shade for no reason but very caring guy and very knowledgable.
One of the best classes you can take. Your GPA might dip a bit, though the quizzes are not as hard as people say. He is an incredible professor, and some lectures are absolute pieces of cinema, like the best documentaries you will ever watch. The workload is heavy but truly valuable.
Lectures can be dull but still pay attention and take notes on the most tangent details/examples that he jokes about because they'll likely show up on exams. Exams can be confusing because they are vocab-heavy and he uses certain phrasing/terms that weren't covered in any lectures or class materials even though all exams are open note.
