Watch the streaming videos.
He knows what he's talking about and the week in review videos really help out.
TAs give quizzes in recitation; Joe gives a couple take home quizzes or in class quizzes; tests not too hard.
Even in a compressed summer course the material was presented in a easy-to-follow, non-daunting way. Calculus is not easy, but Joe gives you what you need to make it through. His exams are fair, integrated curve (103% grading scale), plenty of homework and lab assignments to boost your grade. Highly recommend doing past quizzes.
The class is doable if you are either naturally math minded, or if you go to class and pay attention. He is very helpful during his office hours.
failed the class last semester, this semester I understand everything so much better!
Most awesome professor ever! He went through every type of problem step by step and was extremely helpful during office hours. He gives you plenty of chances to bring your grade up. Watch his online videos. It's like a second lecture for the things I forgot. Also he is SO funny! You ae very lucky if you can get into his class.
Great prof. Very patient and gives you ways to understand problems better. Attendance is a must since he goes through different material everyday.
Great Professor, very helpful and easy to understand, gives you all the materials you need to get an A.
Get Bolinger if possible. The past two test averages for our class of 300+ were a 69 and a 65. Thank God I passed, but I can't say the same for the majority of the class. I refuse to believe more than half of the class is incapable of receiving a passing grade. Something is wrong and I wished I'd known not to have him as a prof. Thanks & Gig 'Em
He's a nice guy. Always tells lame jokes. His website has everything you need (notes, practice problems and solutions, video solutions, and even more help links) also, i think there are a lot of way to get help without leaving your computer. His lectures are a good speed and he explains things very well.
Prof Kahlig makes this class WAY too difficult. My class of 300 students got a failing test average for every exam- does that say anything? The HW is pretty do-able. His test try to trick you with "e- answer not here" on every question. Take MATH 141 w/someone else!!!
The class is hard, but Joe explains everything with great detail. I am not the strongest math student but when I moved from the back of the class to closer to the front my grade shot up. I finished with a B due to my lousy first test but even skipping some class I managed to get a B. If you do the homework it does help though. I would recommend him
This class was awful, Ive never taken a class in my entire life where I felt like I really knew the material, but in the end did not do well because of Joe's extremely tricky tests. I had an A on the homework , but apparently that did not matter. He put's every method he taught you as a choice on each question and none of the above. Dont take him!
Prof tries to trick you on the tests. Not overall too difficult.
I had him last semester, and I didn't think the class was all that bad. I am a strong math student, but that doesn't mean I still didn't work hard in the class. If you go to week in reviews for tests (and sometimes for homework) everything will be a lot clearer. I would take him again for math!
I'm a little over halfway through his class right now and I'm not finding it too difficult. As long as you go to class you should be okay especially if you're strong in math. Printing out the lecture notes from his websites is very helpful. Quizzes ever week once a week.
Prof. Kahlig was awesome! I highly recommend taking his class. I am not good at math at all, and I managed to get a B in the class. He is funny and makes class enjoyable. Two thumbs up!
I really enjoyed Joe's class. He is extremely helpful and puts a lot of helpful links on his website. The class is similar to statistics and isn't hard nor easy. If you get Joe as your professor, there's no way you'll fail the class.
Overall a great professor: likable, engaging, funny, helpful, and fantastic at teaching. Posts notes online before class so print them off and bring them to class to fill in as you go. Email him if you're ever confused about something, he's generally quick to respond and very helpful. One of my favorite professors, would recommend for any course.
This guy is the greatest! All his lectures told me everything I needed to know for the quizzes, homework, and tests. He's to the point and gives you useful information for solving the problems. Aside from that, he's really funny. 10/10.
This Professor is amazing!!! He is very helpful, teaches well, and very funny. Do not listen to the people that say his exams are tricky, he doesn't create the exams. The MATH department does, but he does warn you what you are going to be tested on. You just have to show up to class and pay attention.
A GREAT professor. He has notes ready before class to be printed and has them completed and posted online if you happen to miss a day. Enjoyable professor, and has great corny jokes! He'll help you any time you need him. Definitely one of the best professors on campus!! Tries to prepare department tests as best as he can for the class.
Best prof i've had since I've been at A&M
This class was so hard, but it was definitely on the back burner for me. Joe is super cool and actually tries to learn his student's name. He's awesome. He's really bad a basic math so make sure you pay attention closely to his lectures. Often he'll set up a problem and not know how to solve it. The content of the class is ridiculous.
Joe Kahlig is absolutely awesome. His lectures are extremely clear and helpful, and cover all the necessary topics for succeeding on the tests. Must attend lecture to pass as he gives useful tips that other professors do not. He is extremely helpful in his office hours and is happy to have a conversation. Wish I could have him for every math class.
Don't take him if you aren't good at Calculus already. He won't slow down to accomodate the whole class. Grades tests very tough. Will try to fail you if he can tell you went to an off campus tutor. You can tell he gets some sort of strange satisfaction by placing a large load of work on his students. Also very unwilling to discuss grades at all.
I loved having professor Kahlig. He is my favorite professor I have had thus far. He is very approachable and is great at teaching the material. Highly recommend.
Difficult class but he makes it manageable.
If you are already great at math you'll probably be fine. Nice guy, but goes WAY too fast through the material. 3 tests and a final. Multiple online hw due every week! All tests are write out. Unfair considering all the other 166 profs have multiple choice tests. Honestly, skip 166 and do 141 since there are WAY more resources and tutoring for it.
This is honestly a very difficult class if you don't already have a good grasp of the material or math in general. You CAN NOT BLOW OFF YOUR HOMEWORK. Also you MUST have a graphing calculator no matter what he tells you. His lecture notes don't have a ton to do with the homework. Don't waste your money on the book.
Joe is a really swell guy, that is for certain. He's a true nerd and he makes lectures pretty entertaining. His lecture notes make no sense unless you actually go to lecture and look at them afterwards. If you really want to succeed with Joe, you have to ask a lot of questions because he bases a lot off his teaching through his own linear thinking.
Do not blow off homework. Homework will be due two days after every lecture (even if that falls on a weekend). I blew off my homework at the beginning of the semester so I ended up with a C instead of a B. If you can, take 141 instead. There are so many more tutors/resources available for 141.
Kahlig doesn't really go in depth about the subjects. He tends to go over more examples, rather than explaining theory. The first three test's material wasn't difficult to comprehend, but the vector calc at the end threw me off a little bit since he doesn't explain much. Overall, he's a nice guy and I would take him again.
The class has a few homework assignments per week and they can be kind of tricky. However, Joe is very accessible for when you have questions, and posts all his lecture notes online. My one suggestion is to do the practice problems he posts, because they really help on the tests. He has an interesting sense of humor but it is obvious that he cares.
Overall, really good professor. He can be funny and will answer all your questions. Also, he talks to students before class and is friendly. Plus he's chill and likes his students just calling him "Joe".
Best professor I've ever had. Gets you very ready for the tests without an overwhelming workload. And you're like "yay"
Great teacher if you go to class you will learn and be prepared. He is very kind and always responds to questions and emails within the same day.
He's a great professor. When he goes over the notes he does a great job of explaining exactly what is going on and is good with questions. He's pretty hilarious so that's always good. I would definitely take him again.
The material was pretty easy, but he didn't give extra credit or a curve. There is online weekly homework. Tests are open ended so he gives partial credit. He's nerdy but funny & loves math. The class was small so he learned our names which was nice. I went in for office hours and he explained what I missed on the test.
He's funny but the other math professors give a lot more extra help for the tests and final. So I suggest asking students in other classes for the review before each exam. No curve either.
Joe is a cool guy. He's smart, nerdy, and funny. Lectures very fast; luckily I had calc in high school so it wasn't too bad. He learns lots of students' names which is nice. I found him to be very helpful in office hours, as he goes over stuff at a much slower pace. Just work lots of old exams before yours and you'll be fine. Would recommend!
There is A LOT of homework on WebAssign! Lectures were very helpful & printing the notes helped a lot. Kahlig is a good professor he just didn't work for me. Go to office hours if needed. Tests got harder as the course went by, but the best way to study was practicing problems. He goes over material SUPER FAST & there are no curves nor extra credit
Dr. Kahlig's lectures were always funny and he truly enjoys math! Math 151 is a difficult class in general but he provides a lot of material to help prepare you for tests including plenty of homework, practice problems, and previous tests. The material is covered very quickly so prior calculus knowledge is helpful. "And we're like-- Yay!"
Joe is a great lecturer who is clear and precise when teaching, and covers all the material well before the common exams. I would suggest going to lecture even if you have taken this class before because there is some tricky material. He goes through his notes quickly, but online note templates help organize the information. Take Joe for Calculus!
Joe was a good professor. He took the time to make sure students understood the material. He also introduced concepts first which made learning the processes easier. Definitely reccomend!
Joe takes what can be a boring or difficult class and does his best to engage students in lecture. I had his two hour lecture sessions and he still kept my attention. Lots of WebAssign homework, but the material was covered well before exams and Joe offers lots of practice problems. Very helpful outside of class, and explains things well.
Joe Kahlig is an incredible teacher. His ability to convey calculus topics to his students is phenomenal. He grades all of his own common exams, and will rip you apart if your work is unclear, but he will always talk to a student if they need help. He's not easy, but you will be better off on the common exams because of him. 100% would retake.
Great Prof! Math lectures never help me, but he is great in office hours! Final was reasonable! Gives more tries than anyone else on the webassign homework, and gives extra quizzes- super helpful if you don't do so well on one, and he drops lowest quiz (s). Seems to really want you to succeed!
Joe is an amazing professor! For sure one of the best that I have had at this university. He genuinely cares about his students and is able to convey Calculus topics in ways other professors can't. Considering the exams are common, Joe will give you the best chance to succeed. Would definitely take again.
Joe Kahlig is an awesome prof. His notes are great for use on homework and when preparing for exams/quizzes. His examples are clear and even uses real world examples to relate to calculus. Attendance isn't mandatory but he does sometimes give pop quizzes in lecture so beware. Practice old exams, do the homework and you should end with an A!
Joe's an absolutely amazing professor. Very clear in lecture with explanations, will help you so much in office hours. Definitely recommend his class.
He is a good professor and has puts everything on his website for easy access. Makes jokes here and there.
Joe!!!! Calculus 2 is literally the hardest math class. Joe assigns a lot of homework, and his lectures can get very long and confusing. He really does not care much at all about your grades unless you make a big effort to come to his office hours and ask a lot of questions.
Joe is a funny guy and a great person to take for Calc 3. He has notes you can print out before class, and they make lecture so easy to understand. He made Cal 3 the easiest math class I've taken so far. Homework can be a bit annoying because there is a lot, but it's completely manageable. Take Joe!
Joe is a terrible professor. He grades extremely tough with no leniency whatsoever. The exams he gives are extremely tough and he will not curve anything in the class, even when the class average is a 62% LOL. This is by far the hardest class I've ever taken and Joe doesn't make it any easier. He teaches way too fast and no-one understands it
Joe has a lot of opportunity for office hours. This is for good reason as you will probably need to go. He goes through the material really quickly but still manages to explain a lot. Office hours are when he can really go in depth and clarify the lectures. Compared to other 251 profs, he makes his tests unnecessarily difficult and grades stricter.
Joe is really good at explaining the material and is a good lecturer. It's not an easy class because of all the mental visualization required, but he is willing to do what he can to help you succeed as long as you put in the effort. Use his office hours - he's a fun guy and happy to help!
Although I finished this semester with an A, I would NOT recommend Joe Kahlig for Calculus 3. His true and false questions on exams are literally what makes or breaks a letter grade. What kind of person tests true and false on a math exam?! Overall good guy but not the best prof. Take Rahm, Austin, or Lee
Math 251 (cal 3)--Kahlig was not a terrible professor, but not the best. I enjoyed his classes and never skipped, but I usually learned most of the material on my own. He liked to joke around in class and was always very friendly. Helpful in office hours, homework helped prepare for the exams. Tough grader, no extra credit. Class average was low.
He was very unhelpful. It seemed as if he really loved to see his students fail. He said in class once, "I mean, if everyone Q-Dropped, I would be able to get to lunch quicker, so...". I think that says kinda what he's like.
he is a very chill unique and interesting guy. went to other profs lectures bc Joe likes to do things the hard way. Nice guy but would recommend another prof. definitely sucked. his final was harder than the common exams. fell asleep almost every lecture
Joe was a great teacher, made lectures interesting. He posts all his power points from class online with very clear step by step procedures for each problem. You have to study and do homework but he makes it easy to understand. My grade was a reflection of my study habits not his teaching.
Took him during the summer and man this guy goes fast. You better be prepared to buckle down and throw yourself into the textbook. If you do work for it, you'll learn a lot. He's a good but tough professor.
Hes very fair, caring, and accessible outside of the classroom. Hes a bit of a tough grader and he doesnt necessarily believe in curves because he feels the class is easy enough with all the other stuff. Go to his office hours if you can! He can go a bit fast in lectures and in office hours, hes pretty chill and he wants you to understand!
The exams were tough. He does not curve exam scores. Half of the class failed both exams, but there were a few students who scored well on both. A lot of studying is required in order to understand the material. He tries to explain the material but he doesn't do a good job.
I'm glad I chose Joe for this class. His lectures are very clear and he is extremely approachable and funny. My only complaint is that sometimes the examples in his notes were easier than the homework questions. I am not gifted in calculus but Joe made this class manageable for me. I would take him for another math class if I could.
Joe always gives very clear explanations and his office hours are incredibly helpful. Awesome prof.
Joe is such an amazing professor. It is very common to hear that Cal 2 is the hardest calculus out of 1,2 and 3 but he made this class so much simpler than Cal 1 ever was for me. He is really funny and explains things very well in class. Most def would take another math class with him if I could.
Joe is a great prof. He is quite funny in his lectures, very sarcastic. He knows his stuff is and able to teach very well. Highly recommend going to week in reviews they are helpful. If you want to be successful do all the HW and do well on the quizzes and lab assignments the three together are 20% of the grade. Amy Austin is another good option.
Calculus 2 is the hardest calculus, but Joe is one of few professors that makes it enjoyable. Lecture is fast paced , but Joe will stop at any time to explain anything. If you miss anything in lecture, recitation and homeworks will help greatly in learning and practicing math. Joe's website is great as well: read his jokes and listen to the music.
On my first day I thought I was gonna fail the class. LITERALLY. Then I started to get used to the way he teaches, and now he is absolutely my favorite. HE IS BY FAR THE MOST ORGANIZED PERSON ON EARTH. Hes definitely a tough grader. Tests are not a piece of cake. Just go to class, do HW, and go to his office hours and you should get an A.
Joe is an overall great professor who cares about his student's success. That said, he won't make it easy to do well, he wants you to work for it. His lectures cover the content in a methodical way and he is very accessible for office hours. You will take common exams for the class and he makes the final, which I found easier than the common exams.
I had no high school calc experience and ended up with a C my first semester in Calculus I. I found Calc II with Dr. Kahlig to be much easier to understand and pick up. Tools like the week in review sessions provide additional aid, and Dr. Kahlig's lectures are helpful in understanding the class material as a whole.
Cal 2 was infamous at our school and I heard many horror stories from upper clansmen. However, Joe made everything easy to understand, and he makes pretty funny jokes here and there as well. He knows the material really well and he answers your questions very clearly as well. I wish I could also have him for MATH 251 and diff eq!
Professor Kahlig was a great lecturer who really understood the material well and was able to reciprocate it back to the students. I enjoyed his class very much and would definitely take it again.
The best professor I have ever had. His lecture is really amazing, also You can access those lecture on his website which was really helpful to me. I am so glad I had him for Math 152. Def. take him again if He teaches Math 251
Joe is an awesome prof. His lectures were great and explained everything. Also, his web page is awesome and soooo helpful. Has all of the lecture notes on there as well as past exams to help you study for the tests. Take him for sure!
His lectures are good and he is pretty funny but he does not require attendance. He is very laid back. He wants students to set reasonable goals and not get obsessed with trying for a 4.0.
Dr. Kahlig was a great Calc II professor. He was very organized with homework and his website, and communicated readily with the class. If you ever feel lost, he has all of his lecture notes on his website and is great during office hours. He really made Calc II not seem as hard as others made it out to be.
Joe is a super funny and overall great professor. All of his notes are very organized and posted on his website. Math 151 isn't hard classes if you understand the concepts and do the common exams.
I have always loved math, until I got to this class. The lectures seem long and unending, while the examples go too in depth. The class examples tend to be useless and a lot harder than what we actually need to know, and Joe K. knows this. He seemed to find joy in the struggle. He was the only prof who made the final free response, and pretty hard
Joe was a good teacher overall. Class difficulty is the same for all of 152, but Joe prepared you well for the common exams and his final wasn't hard. Go to lectures do the notes and you'll be fine tldr: Class is hard, but Joe teaches material well enough to succeed
Joe is a homie. His course is extremely well organized and has all the notes online which makes it very easy to know what you missed if you skip a lecture. The common exams make this course extremely easy; just take a bunch of them before every test to study. The final was easier than the common exams IMO. Get a good group for the lab! Important!!
It's a hard class. Joe does a good job explaining and a lot of students really love him. I wouldn't take him again by choice but that is only because I want to see what other profs have to offer. Most people do love him and would take him again which is why I definitely recommend him as well.
Loved Joe! Calc 2 is a hard class but if you go to him in office hours, he will help so much. You should definitely go to class, but if you don't, you can look up notes he posted and lectures he's done in the past, and you'll be fine. Common exams are posted which are pretty close to the actual exam. HW helps with understanding things taught. #RONA
Joe is the best. He will answer questions in the middle of the lecture, and make sure that you can piece together the concepts so that everything makes sense as a cohesive unit. You will get an A if you can solve all problems in the homework, and solve the previous tests and Week in Review practice problems.
I failed this class last semester but with Kahlig I'm getting all A's. You still have to put in effort because it's a difficult class in general but he gives you all the tools you need for success. Great professor.
Joe is an incredible guy, and an even more incredible teacher. I took clac II under him, which is a *really* difficult class. To be blunt, you need to go to his office hours, email him your questions, and go to class if you want to do well. Joe is here to help you, and he'll do everything in his power to help you understand.
Joe is a nice guy, who is decent at mixing corny jokes into his lectures. He does go a little fast, as I often found myself just copying down what he was writing instead of comprehending because I didn't want to be left behind, AND we were usually ahead of the other 152 classes. He responds to emails quickly, and makes things easy to understand!
While you technically don't have to go to class, he does cover the notes for the days topic which are very helpful (they are later uploaded online though). He is very accessable, office hours are GREAT and everyone should go to them. The homework can be tricky, so don't wait until the last minute. The lab was the worst part of the class.
He lectures very well and posts his in-class notes online. The notes themselves are almost good enough to learn the course from. The tests are very reasonable if you know the material
Solid choice! He makes dad jokes a lot so get ready. You definitely have to put time into doing homework and studying but if you do you can get an A, but that goes for probably any prof. He gives 5 attempts on homework which is very gracious and is good at communicating in class and through emails. I would definitely take Kahlig again!
Joe is the absolute best prof you can get for Cal 2. While the material is not easy, he makes it understandable and tells great dad jokes in lectures. At the beginning of the semester, he mentioned having pop quizzes in lecture, but he never actually gave a pop quiz in lecture. There are three common exams during the semester as well as a final.
Dr. Kahlig is really good about answering questions and explaining things during lecture, although you can skip I wouldn't recommend it. If you can get an A on the homework and the common exams, you can get As on the exams. Even if you start off kind of weak, you can redeem your grade with the final.
Best Cal 2 Professor! Notes posted on website.
Dr. Kahlig is an incredible professor. You can learn everything you need for the course as long as you attend and pay attention to the lectures and keep up with your homework. The tests are always directly from the material discussed in course. I would recommend taking this professor.
Joe is a god. He is funny and cares about his student's success. If you go to lectures and pay attention it shouldn't be too hard to follow along. Cal 2 is hard, so be sure to ask questions when you have them. Joe is great at explaining the subject as clearly as it can be done.
A really approachable prof. He loves to make jokes and references and clearly cares about the students and actually teaching the class. Would definitely take again
One of my favorite math professors at A&M. He posted completed notes online and was really good teaching the material to students. Pretty lenient with grading exams and quick to answer emails. Always willing to help.
This class requires a lot of work. The material itself is not inherently difficult, but it does get pretty tricky. You will also immediately fall behind if you skip class. The homework and test problems are the trickiest part, but with enough effort and studying, you'll get the hang of it. There are also pop quizzes (take-home or in-class).
Kahlig was pretty cool. He goes really fast, but halfway through his class the pandemic hit and his lectures went online where I could slow them down. He makes things really understandable and he is pretty funny, and he really knows his stuff. Would take again
Really fantastic professor, I learned a lot. The key is just to attend class, and I was able to get to know him on a personal basis. Also sprinkles in really dumb jokes to keep the mood light. Would take him again 100% and my friend who took him on my referral says he is great too
Joe is a great professor and made a harder class much easier to understand. He throws in plenty of jokes to keep the class upbeat, and he does a great job teaching the material. He is easily accessible and did a great job of teaching a hybrid class. Definitely would not chose a different professor for this class.
Kahlig is a great professor, would definitely suggest taking him. I took Calc BC in high school, which was my junior year (so basically forgot everything). His lectures are a bit fast paced, but he is really approachable and responds to emails quickly and is easy to reach out to in office hours. Always finishes early on content so you can study.
This professor is the best one out there. There class is naturally a little difficult. He is very easy to understand and gives you all the tools. Best professor i've had so far.
Joe is truly one of the best professors out there. He cares about his students and wants us to succeed. The class was difficult but his lectures were very thorough and well-organized. He throws cheesy jokes into his lectures and makes you look forward to going to his class. He can be a tough grader, but you'll thank him later. We all love Joe.
He seems to be good at teaching Math 152, but I had him for Math 325, which he was horrible at. He clearly does not understand the material himself, and he rarely finished working problems in lectures. Homeworks were very difficult questions from old FM exams, but his lectures were only very easy examples. I feel very unprepared for the FM exam.
Kahlig is not a good professor. He did horribly at explaining concepts on the FM exam, covered only very simple examples in class, and the homeworks were made up entirely of old questions from the FM exam because Kahlig was too lazy to write new questions that he actually prepared us to solve. Of 57 students, 10 dropped and the average GPA was 2.7.
The worst experience I have had to date at Texas A&M! Is a TERRIBLE professor. The notes in class were almost redundant for the exams, which are the bulk majority of the class grade. Did a horrible job explaining the concepts and how to utilize the methods taught and used simple examples that didnt usually cover the intricacies of real FM problems.
Barely any partial credit on tests, which are 84% of the total grade. Additionally, he does not do a good job of preparing you for FM, as everyone else has said. Get ready to buy a CoachingActuaries subscription; I just passed FM thanks to them, and that is the ONLY reason why. He is also hard to approach in office hours. He's kinda mean.
Definitely a lot of work but he is also clear in his classes. His notes were available online which was extremely helpful. Responsive to email. Don't expect much leniency when it comes to extra points as he's a firm believer that you gotta earn it. He'll might throw a bonus point if you've worked hard enough. Take him if ya can.
Kahlig taught this class horribly. He does not understand the content himself, and did not prepare us for the FM Exam in the slightest. I used CoachingActuaries to study for Exam FM, and throughout the process, I realized truly how little Kahlig knew about the FM content. I just passed Exam FM thanks to CoachingActuaries, and no thanks to Kahlig.
A GREAT professor. There is a lot of material in the curriculum for this class, so it seems like a lot is dumped on you every lecture, but prof Kahling explains everything really well, has a sense of humor to keep you awake/is really relatable. He leaves plenty of gaps to ask questions and his website is AWESOME- study the notes and do the practice
He's a great professor. The course covers a lot of material and Joe makes sure his lectures teach all of it. The jokes are pretty cheesy but it's easy to stay engaged during class. His website is well organized and his notes are very useful to follow in lecture and study for the exams.
Kahlig is a solid choice for Calc 3. He teaches very fast and you have to stay on top of the material, but at least he covers everything before the test, which can't be said about other Calc 3 profs. Fair grader but make sure you do well on the first two tests because the last test will kill your grade.
Very smart and funny man and pretty good lecturer. Goes extremely fast so make sure you stay on top of the notes. He makes the tests unnecessarily difficult for some reason and theyre way harder than any other MATH251 professors tests. This class should definitely be a common exam class purely because of the variation in professors tests.
Joe was an excellent and comedic professor. I jumped into calc 3 in my first semester and was intimidated, but Joe taught me well. The class is by no means easy, the concepts are abstract and take understanding. However, Joe told us that the exams would be in partisan with our web assign homework, and that was certainly true. Take Joe (if you can)!
I consider myself lucky to have had Joe come through as a substitute for my original prof(he was bad). Joe is very organized and his lectures are well thought out. He is concise and what he covers in class reflects what will appear on the exams. You need to come to class, do the homework, and do the released exams in order to succeed. no curve btw.
Its a highly organized class with great lectures. Professor Kahlig uploads notes, lecture videos and practice problems on his website to work on. He also gives great advice on how to study. Hes the best professor Ive ever had.
Professor Kahlig was the best professor I could ask for, for this class. I took this class as a freshman and therefore unaware of the speed of college classes. He made a difficult course do-able. Textbook didnt help too much, but homework and his practice homework were super helpful. Tests count for 80% of the grade, dont blow-off first two tests
I really enjoyed this class with professor Kahlig, he is a GREAT teacher and helps you visualize complex 3D problems. He didn't have a set homework day every week and they would be due semi-randomly (still plenty of notice) but would prevent me from forming a consistent weekly schedule, which was annoying. I still definitely recommend him though!!
Joe was the best prof I've ever had at TAMU. He genuinely made MATH 152 a much easier course, even though it is one of the harder calc classes to take. He has excellent notes to view outside of class, good handwriting, and if you participate in class and ask questions, he will most definitely remember your name and give you the support if you need
He drops two of the lowest hw grades for web assign and replaces the lowest test score with the final if its higher. His lectures are well thought out and he is very easy going. His website is a life saver for looking at notes, lectures and stuff to study for the test. If you put in some work, you'll do great
Joe was an amazing professor who made a difficult to comprehend class a lot easier. He made thorough lecture notes, and provided homework that heavily pertained to the exam problems. The final replaces the lowest exam grade, but as long as you put in the work on the first two exams you should be fine. Take Joe if you can!
This is the best professor you can take for 251, highly recommend. This isn't an easy class, but Joe made it manageable. But it's fast paced, so if you skip class you'll fall behind. The class is HW heavy but fair with weekly take-home quizzes. He has videos, notes and extra questions on his website that help a lot with preparing for the test.
He cannot teach this class. He tries to make jokes in class that no one laughs at. The homeworks are extremely difficult and the exams are hard as well. Majority of people fail the exams, but there is no curves. Test are 84% of your grade. Only took him because he was the ONLY option available in the semester. If you see his name, DO NOT TAKE.
Joe is a solid choice for 251. He is pretty funny, which break up lectures that otherwise don't stand out. Homework is pretty easy most of the semester and mimics the test questions really well. He responded to all my questions and is available for office hours, and if you need help just go ask, he's super nice about it.
Dr. Kahlig is the best math professor I have had so far. Tests are a big deal and have a lot of weight, so make sure you study for them. Amazing lectures that are kept fun through his humor, they really helped me get through the semester. Would definitely take again!
Joe is a great professor who genuinely wants his students to learn. He is funny in class, and supportive of students who are struggling. Solid choice for any math course at A&M.
He's an excellent professor. If you use Leonard's lecture videos in conjunction with Kahlig's lectures, you'll be set, especially if you do the practice webassign as well. Tests were quite fair, and the partial credit is quite generous if you know what you were doing. Quizzes were also take home and very short.
Dr. Kahlig is fantastic, and his expectations for students and assignments are quite clear. In this class he moves quite quickly, so paying attention and attending class is crucial for success, though he also uses humor to engage the class. I would recommend going to office hours if you have questions, he is very helpful clarifying topics.
Kahlig explained 3D concepts very well and his drawing made it easy to understand. All quizzes were take-home (free 100). Check his website where he posts lecture vids, grade distributions, etc. The 3rd exam and final were very difficult, but he provides all resources needed for an a. Don't procrastinate on webassign, because there's a ton of it.
He was always clear with what he was talking about and if any questions were asked he was always willing to help. In 251 he helped me understand the 3-dimensional aspects very well. He is enthusiastic and the best math professor I have had so far.
Joe Kahlig is an enthusiastic professor who helped me understand the 3-dimensional aspects of math 251 very well. His website is very well organized and helped me whenever I didn't understand anything. Exams weigh a lot but if you study they are easy.
Dr. Kahlig helped me understand 3D concepts very well. His website has lecture videos and additional problems that are great for practice. The quizzes are take home. The quizzes and exams are similar to the lecture and additional problems. He responds to emails with very helpful replies. He wants you to succeed and you can tell.
Joe was always engaged in lectures and explained topics very well. He has all of his lectures on his webpage, so no need to go to class unless you want to. Quizzes were take-home which was nice. Tests had simple calc 1 and 2 concepts (little to no tedious work), mainly testing you on the calc 3 concept.
He is a generally ok professor. Nothing stand out about his teaching style. He is sort of iffy with accommodations, so be ready to stand your ground and fight for what you need. The biggest thing is that he grades incredibly hard on the exams, even with them being FRQ with "partial credit". Wouldn't recommend if you have a shaky base in math.
Kahlig is the GOAT. 251 was not easy by any means (see: the last midterm and the final) I took him over the summer and while I recommend you go to lecture because it has more info, he has videos for each section on his website. Study, study, study. He's super helpful during office hours and is easy to reach. And we're like cool.
Great professor! A very cool guy and is always willing to answer your questions. He stays professional while also being a funny guy in class. He's the best, take his class you won't regret it
Joe is a great professor, the lecture is very useful and from a student perspective, he is a professor who actually cares, is knowledgeable, and is dedicated to teaching you. The only draw back would be his exams and final are all FRQ, as apposed to other professors who have MC. First two exams not bad, 3rd exam and final are impossible so yea.
Prof Joe has a web page with class resources that I found really helpful for this course. Webassign homework can get lengthy so stay on top of that. don't skip lecture because he tends to cover many sections/chapters in one day. Overall, my favorite prof of the semester because lectures were concise and easy to pay attention to.
Even though I barely showed up to class, I got through it. His website has all the information you need and his videos are perfect replacements for in-class notes, especially with the faster playback speed. Sometimes, his voice is really monotone, but just stay on top of the courseload (don't procrastinate it for right before the test, trust me)
He was an overall great math professor. The best part of his course would probably be his website with lots of materials, if you miss class. One thing I wasn't fond of was his lack of reviews for the tests he had. His tests were pretty unlike any other professors tests so it made studying reliant on the little questions and the homework.
Joe is an amazing lecturer. He is very good at keeping the class engaged by cracking random jokes, and has a good set of notes and an excellent 251 website. His exams are harder than other professors. Do as good as you can on his 1st and 2nd exam. His 3rd exam and final are extremely difficult, and unfairly hard imo. Quizzes are nothing like exams.
Class is difficult but mostly because of the material being taught. Tests are all free response but he gives partial credit. He is a very caring professor though and you can tell that he cares about his students. It's like if your dad taught you math but only with the dad jokes and none of the yelling or crying. Overall a really nice guy.
Overall Joe Kahlig is a great professor. His lectures are very informative and full of dad jokes to keep you entertained. The second half of the class is much harder than the first half so be prepared to study. His webiste was a great resource for me during the semester as it has lecture videos and extra practice for every subject covered in class.
Perfect for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, lecture-heavy learning environment and/or likes to teach themself. If you want a more personalized learning environment, either go to all of his office hours or pick a different professor. His tests are more difficult than other profs. Doing well on Exams 1&2 is imperative to do well in his class.
He is a very nice guy and teaches fairly well if you can keep up. He does go a little fast for me, which no problem because he has really good lecture videos on his webpage to go back and review (just not as in depth). Has a lot of practice material to work with. If you actually keep up and study, it'll be fine.
Take Joe Kahlig. He's not only a really good teacher, but he knows how to make a 1.5 hr class fun and enjoyable. He has tons of resources on his webpage, such as lecture videos and additional practice. To those of you weary about his exam difficulty, with studying, exams are a breeze (take it from me who worried 24/7 about these tests).
Great class! Joe has a lot of dad jokes on deck, is great at teaching, and knows what he's doing. On top of that, he posts all his lecture notes on his website so you can look at them outside class to help with the homework. His exams are 100% free response, but he gives lots of partial credit and if you study, it's a very easy class.
Lectures are very thorough and he has video notes online for every single lecture which are also very good The best way to prepare for tests are to look at his additional problems. Many of the tougher test questions are based on that so make sure to take a look.
Joe really cares about his students. He takes the time to get to know everyone that he can and make sure everyone can succeed. If his lectures are confusing to you at all he will take the time to help you through it one on one. He is a great professor.
Wasn't a bad professor he just went really fast so it was hard to grasp the material especially since I didn't come from a calc background. He gives out homework which isn't too bad just time-consuming sometimes. TEST ARE WEIGHED VERY HIGHLY so make you do well. Quizess are not bad the TAs help a lot. I didn't need the course anymore so I dropped
Joe is an absolute legend, a boss. He makes lectures engaging and interesting, and is always cracking jokes. This class requires effort to get a high grade, like all do in college, but Joe makes it abundantly clear what is expected to be in exams and quizzes. Practice past exams and go to review sessions.
Joe is a Goat. Most of his lectures are just example problems which will come up in some form later on a test or a quiz. He always has review sessions before his exams where you can ask for specific problems to be worked out. Even though you can't see what prof you get for 151 when you register, if you get Joe, you're in good hands.
Joe is awesome. He explains really well and has problems in the notes that are useful to refer to. He makes jokes and is very friendly. I am trying my absolute hardest to take him for every math class I have. VERY EXAM HEAVY but as long as you work a few practice exams and take notes in class you'll be good.
Joe is the BEST! He makes the lectures (which are so long) interesting and easy to pay attention, and he's accessible outside class. The common exams this semester were pretty difficult, but that has nothing to do with his teaching. I think that he prepared the class well for the exams. Quizzes and labs were easy to get 100s on.
Joe was a fantastic professor, I have no issues with him. Very fast paced lectures, but also all posted online so you didn't technically have to be there. The 151 exams were insane this year tbh, but I felt more prepped than others who had different profs. He was super accessible outside of class, his office hours are great, so go say hey!
Joe is great
Joe is no mind-blowing professor but he gets the job done fairly well. Exams could be somewhat difficult but more than fair as long as you do the practice exams. Go to class or it is very easy to fall behind as lectures are not recorded.
Joe is an excellent teacher and explains every subject very well. I'm a bit partial due to having learned calculus before, but he explains the subjects straightforwardly, along with providing examples both in class and online through his website and book to help cement the concept. I would highly recommend him.
Kahlig is a carefree but thorough teacher. All class notes are recorded, so attendance isn't mandatory but preferable. He had office hrs for 2 hrs twice a week and is happy to help w/ any tough hw problems. Common exam #3 can be rough (that's what brought my grade down), so get ahead with practice problems. Get a good group for your python labs!
Joe is such a great professor! He is genuinely a nice and funny guy and posts all of the lecture notes online as well as additional practice problems which are helpful. Quizzes are easy As and one gets dropped. The final exam replaces your lowest exam grade. This is a difficult course, but Joe is a good teacher and you can 100% succeed with him.
Dr. Kahlig's lectures are composed of almost entirely practice problems. The underlying concepts of these math problems are gone over once at the start of the unit. Dr. Kahlig goes over math problems in a very easy to understand way.
i love him so much
i love him so much.
Heads up, his lectures are longer than other 151 profs. His website is super organized when finding notes. Because of his long class, it get boring really fast. He just solves problem to problem to problem & he's kinda monotone. He's pretty set with his office hours and won't accommodate even if you email him. Take him if you already did calc in HS
Joe Kahlig managed to balance his lectures with learning and humor in a way which kept me focused without often getting bored. Loved how he would upload the notes to his website ahead for lecture so that you can print it out/download it and go through it with him during the lecture. Probably the best Calculus 1 professor you can get.
Professor Kahlig was an amazing professor. His class was very difficult, but he explained things super well, and he was just a genuinely good human being.
He is an amazing professor. My grade was entirely my fault because I took 2 hard stem classes during the summer. Be aware the course is very fast pace even for a 10 week course. He explains it in a easy way and he uploads all of his work and videos to his website. 10/10 professor would recommend.
Joe is the best. So relaxed and fun, and will make time to meet with you. Also is a phenomenal teacher and a fun guy to be around. Loved having him and would kill to have him again.
Joe is the perfect math professor. Took him for 151 in fall 2023 and 251 in spring 2024 and he is great for both. I can't speak for 152 since I used an AP credit to skip it, but I'd assume he does a great job for that course as well, though I've heard it is quite difficult. If you get the option, take Joe.
hes a good teacher and a good person in general. i got a C cause im pre-med with other classes i was focused on + math isn't the easiest subject for me, but he still helped dumb things down for me loll. glad i got this class over with tho, if you're in the same boat as me (pre med/biochem majors taking calc 3) joe kahlig is your best bet fs.
This guy gives an insane amount of partial credit, I dont think I got a single question right on most of my exams but I'd remember random steps from doing the hw and just write steps down while plug/chugging the numbers through. Either he took pity on me or I have the greatest memory in the world, but I managed to pass by partial credit alone.
Super entertaining professor. I continue to use his Week in Review notes for other math classes since I have had him because they are so detailed and helpful.
Joe is nice enough and has frequent office hours where he is very willing to help you with homework, but for some reason, he does not care how his students do on exams. Even if you work hard to understand the material, just know that he may write a hard exam or make one too long and everyone will fail but there won't be a curve to compensate.
i bombed 2 finals and it was cooked but i got As in everything else and it balanced out (im pre med so getting a C isnt necesssary in this class specifically) this guys partial credit is crazy, i got almost full points on many incorrect answers simply because i wrote a ton of BS on every question.
Joe is a great prof who teaches really well but his exams are harder than other profs. If you want to learn the concepts, take him. if you want an A while putting in the least amount of effort, maybe consider someone else.
Joe is a professor who cares about his students, held office hours 2 hours a day 3 days a week. However, exams and content are much more difficult than other professors. Gives somewhat generous partial credit, but you need to do more for an A. His website was very helpful, and make sure you do really well on first two exams, last two are rough.
He is a great professor who teaches very well; however, he is super challenging. His exams were hard compared to other profs, and it was always a free response. Overall, He's a super cool guy and a funny, engaging teacher.
Professor Kahlig strikes a good balance between lecture and humor, keeping me engaged. His organized website with notes is super helpful. The class is challenging, but with Unstuck study and practice, you can succeed.
Took Dr. Kahlig for 151 Fall 2024. Great professor! Conveyed the material very well. Really enjoyed his sense of humor, made class really fun. Office hours are great, very helpful and I highly recommend. Would for sure take again!
Professor Kahlig is good at making lectures more entertaining and making it easier to pay attention; however, he does teach at a very fast pace, making it hard to follow along. The tests are very challenging and can often make or break your grade.
Goes straight to the point. He's great at explaining and making sure everyone understands. His lecture slides are also super useful and, overall, he's a great guy. Took MATH151 with him, would absolutely take another class.
Fun guy. Good professor. Engaging lectures. Attendance is not necessarily necessary since he posts really good notes, especially if you took calc in high school, but I encourage going. Overall great proffesor!
Professor Kahlig is an amazing professor, and I couldn't recommend him enough. He releases notes for every lecture and additional practice problems, which are very helpful when learning calculus and studying for the tests. Additionally, he's very receptive to questions and tries to make lectures interesting even though the material isn't.
If you feel confident in your calculus abilites, take 151 with Joe. Attendance isn't mandatory so I stopped showing up after we reached limits. For the few lectures I attended, he was a funny guy and explained the concepts well. 80% of your grade is made up of exams, but I think that is common across all 151 professors.
best math 151 prof u can possibly get. if you get joe, you're set for life.
Joe explains things so clearly and I actually enjoy going to his class. This class will be difficult if you didn't take calculus in high school, but Joe does his best to explain things very thoroughly. I would highly recommend him as a calculus one professor.
Covers everything you'll see on exams in lecture, and emphasizes things that would usually trip people up. Homework gives multiple attempts for each(part of a) question. Good and funny professor, highly recommend especially if you took calculus in highschool.
Joe is a very caring person however do not take this class if you have no prior experience in calculus. A lot of the material wasn't taught but only swept over adding challenge for students with no prior experience. I ended up dropping because the material wasn't helping me and I decided to take a more thorough class.
This is a very test heavy class regardless of your professor, but Professor Kahlig has excellent lectures and notes that he posts. He's also a very personable guy who really enjoys what he teaches which makes class much more enjoyable. Class is taught at a quick but manageable pace, and as long as you review the past exams you will do fine.
Dr. Kahlig knows how to keep students engaged for an 8 AM lecture. His WebAssign hw is long but manageable, and his quizzes aren't bad if you study. Lecture notes and a ton of resources posted online. Only thing I didn't like was the Python content, my TA Santiago was a tough grader.
Joe is a great proff--made my 8am enjoyable. His lectures are engaging and he is funny. Exams are 80% of your grade (3 exams + 1 final). Weekly python group assignments, python&recitation quizzes. Homework on webassign, but 5 attempts per question. Missed the A by 1 point. No extra credit. Calculus 1, but also introduces basic physics concepts.
Joe's lectures are optional, and he Is a very good lecturer and easy to understand. Class is very exam heavy and I finished with a high B. Joe has lots of office hours and is very approachable and makes lectures fun. 100% recommend him but exams are difficult and require studying.
I didn't have a good calculus background, so this was the class I had to put the most amount of effort in, but Joe made the class very manageable. He was very straightforward and went through various questions in class similar to the homework problems. There were 35 homework assignments, for reference, but they're good practice for exams.
Take Joe! He is great at explaining concepts and loves to answer questions. Although lecture could feel rushed at times, he makes clear how to study for tests in order to do well. Very nice guy and cracked jokes occasionally. Python and recitation quizzes were pretty easy, but make sure to study for the tests. Overall would heavily recommend Joe!
Exams/Final make up 80% so make sure you prepare by taking numerous common exams. Kahlig has good energy and tries to make class fun. He is easily accessible in office hours and is pretty good at helping 1 on 1. No extra credit or curves (to be expected with gen ed) and rounded by .5 at the end of semester. Would take again for Calc 1.
Dr. Kahlig is one of the best! He loves the topic and makes me excited to attend a 9am. Lots of homework that's going to take you an hour or so, but it was so helpful for the exam. 3 exams and a final, but he prepares you so well for it. He posts the notes which but attend the lectures! They are great and makes the concepts easier to understand!
Lecutres are great and he's honestly very funny. Tons of extra material on his website, and he posts all lectures there so you're not doomed if you miss any. His tests are harder compared to other professors, though (all frqs). But he never tries to trick you and the "trickier" problems are seen in the notes.
Teaches good, Exams are easy
Joe is a great lecturer, explains content very well, and is very accessible via email and office hours. His exams were decently harder than other professors exams, although I enjoyed and looked forward to his lectures and he makes them fun with dad jokes and whatnot. He explains concepts great and has fill in notes. Highly recommend!!!
Joe is the best math professor I have ever had. Lectures were extremely clear, concise, and thorough. He held office hours 3 days a week and was very helpful. Beware that his exams are much harder than other profs, but he will prepare you very well for them.
Tests are definitely harder than others (do NOT assume another teacher's test reviews will be sufficient), but he's pretty chill and his lectures are too. Shoutout Joe
Great professor. Detailed notes and explanation. Exams are hard but if you thoroughly go over his notes, you should be fine.
I don't understand how others did so well in his class I studied like crazy for his exams and still failed. 80% of your grade for his class comes from the exams. The homework's are due at random intervals and can take hours to complete. This is the first and only class I have ever failed.
Almost had a B(bombed final). Strongly suggest doing the week-in-reviews and extra practice questions on his website. Study daily, do the homework diligently and watch Prof. Leonard if you're lost. Prof. Leonard carried me in terms of understanding because Joe sometimes teaches it like you know it. Tests aren't as hard as people claim them to be.
Very straight forward teacher and I was able to understand the content he was teaching. In calculus, you can either have a teacher you can understand, or one you can't. Kahlig is definitely the first option and is just the standard calculus teacher. If you want a good grade in the class, you have to put in the effort, no matter the professor.
Kahlig was an absolute goat for this class. His lectures were really really good and helpful. People say the tests were hard but they weren't; they were really fair. I never saw a problem on a test that I hadn't seen somewhere else (his website/homework has everything you could need to study). Take him and go to lectures and study for tests.
One of the best calculus professors you could have. Coming from someone who struggled with AP Calc in high school, he made all the concepts seem simple. Very thorough lecture notes and funny personality! His online webpage has many of his old/current resources to study. Harder final than expected but still doable if you study. A is very attainable!
Maybe it's because I took the class at 8 am but it was quite hard to stay awake the entire hour and 15 minutes. Good lecturer and tests are fair, but I wish he did more of student participation. He definitely harder than the others.
Wouldn't round my 79.4 to a B. He has lecture videos pre-recorded and available from day one, but the in-person lectures are more engaging.
GOAT GOAT GOATTTTTT, had him for 151 and 251 and super good, his exams gave lots of partial credit and were similar to examples on his website and notes, lectures very good
I took Joe for both 151 and 251 and had a good experience overall. His tests are probably harder than other profs but I would say he's a very fair grader. He's a funny guy but his lecture style isn't for everyone and you might learn more from Professor Leonard. Overall a positive experience though and would suggest. Frequent office hours were nice
Amazing Professor and is very funny. It makes his lectures very easy to go to. He also teaches the concepts very well and can teach very clearly. That being said this class is something you need to put effort in to get a good grade but Mr Kahlig has great resources to help you such as his website, previous common exams, etc. Overall great teacher!
Goes at a very fast pace and makes unnecessary jokes throughout his lectures. Additionally, his TA which he chose for the math quizzes and python labs was not fluent in english, so communication was a barrier there. Sent out emails asking to look over past exams to understand my mistakes, but was told grades are final and didn't try to help.
Dr Khalig was decent. He has amazing resources i.e the webpage, which he said hes taking off. Other than that, rushed through topics, bad office hours, bad TA selection, gives harder exams than the other profs. Wouldnt round my 69.88 to a 70. Would not take again, lowkey taught myself everything
