I loved this class
this professor is one of my favorites. He is fair but kind he goes directly by the syllabus but does everything in his power to help you pass within Fscj guild lines. He gives you every opportunity to pass! He gives extra credit, Amelia speech. The final was online and a hour in a half for 100 easy questions. Take him! He's awesome!
Overall pretty good professor. No reason why you shouldn't pass. Show up for your speeches and do some of the extra credit and you'll be fine. He is a big Packers fan but oddly enough he picks against them all the time. Just saying. Take him.
Take advantage of all of the extra credit he gives you at the beginning of the quarter. You're going to need it. I hate public speaking, but Mr. LaBarbera makes it easy for you. Always come to class. It was probably the most easiest YET nerve-wracking class. His criteria is pretty clear. It's easy to work your way around to getting more points.
I hate speech but he made this class bearable. He's a funny guy and an even better professor.
Take this professor! His lectures are always fun and not boring. There aren't any tests and the quizzes are all online. We're half through the class and I'm already not scared like I used to be to get up in front of people and give a speech.
Wow! Just finished this class and it is amazing. It is the only class I took where the professor didn't just lecture you and expect you to remember everything. Your quizzes are ALL online and there is no final. There's one group project but he helps you with it. You need to show up for class and don't miss quizzes!!!!!!! Take this professor!
He's a pretty good professor. He's straight to the point on what he expects from the class. He uses pop culture references to relate to speech communication, which makes the class fun and VERY engaging. He can be tough but will absolutely work with you but you MUST show that you're putting in as much effort as you know you can do.
This was the best class I've taken at FSCJ. I was nervous about taking a summer speech class because they're so short and have lots of work but this professor really helped me. His lectures are entertaining and kept me from being bored! There are lots of quizzes, but they're all online and all open book. You have to show up and be on time!!!
Awesome speech teacher. TAKE HIM. Never boring. He is very laid back and makes you very comfortable. Speeches are no longer than 5 minutes, and he will give you lots of feedback. He is very passionate about speech. His powerpoints use video and he always plays music before class. Funny and fun! Definitely take him.
Very organized class. I was able to learn more in the 8 weeks than I have in some courses i've taken in 16 weeks. He is straight forward with how he grades. He keeps it real and makes certain that everything is understood. You will need the book online for quizzes. Make sure to pick wisely when choosing groups for your project.
Take this professor. He keeps it very real. You use your book for online quizzes but the rest of the class is real life. The discussions were all about what was happening that day or week. Your group project matters so pick good group members. Do your quizzes early in the semester. Answers emails really fast. Wish I could take him again.
Great class funny and down to earth. Really knows how to connect the material and made lessons in a classroom very similar to the real world. As a working professional taking this course it's not just book stuff. It's real stuff. Good class if you want to learn, do well and have fun.
He's pretty amazing. I've never had a professor like this. He actually cares!!!!! He grades all of our work right away. He deals with real world speech stuff and some book stuff. Quizzes are all online and open book. He's really strict on attendance and DO NOT USE YOUR PHONE IN CLASS!!!!! Take him!!!
Professor Labarbera is awesome take his class. just dont text in class or tweet. i highly recommend professor Labarbera.
I would definitely take this class again. He may be a blunt, but thank goodness he is! I never actually needed him outside of office hours but he is more than happy to make appointments with you outside of office hours and he isn't really a tough grader as long as you do the work. There was a group project but it wasn't too bad.
Amazing professor. Signed up for his broadcasting class next semester and I'm not even a broadcasting major. We played Jeopardy for a final exam review and he let us keep our points if we wanted to instead of taking the final. I was really dredding taking this class but he made it fun. He really relates speech to the real world keeping class real!
I wasn't sure about this class since i dropped speech once but Labarbera's class is pretty awesome. I lost points for texting and tweeting in class but extra credit made up for it. He's pretty strict on using phones. All the tests were open book and online. He makes speeches pretty easy. Just do the work and show up to class. He's kinda funny too.
An excellent professor. He was respectful, considerate, and incorporated humor to better catch the attention of the class. He pushed me to think differently and how to respect other people''s opinions. Professor Labarbera exceeds in his career and I am sure he is recognized as doing such. It has been a true pleasure taking his class.
Best teacher I have had in a long time. He gives clear outlines of his expectations. Many opportunities for extra credit. Make sure you take advantage of every one of them. Do not expect an easy A but if you work hard and put forth the effort, an A is achievable. I highly recommend Professor Labarbera.
Takes points off for cell phone usage, can't be late you have to sign in or you are consider tardy. If you go over your speech allotted time you are deducted 20 points not fair. Deducted for unexcused absent 20 points. Easy grader/ lectures aren't boring.14 quizzes, 1 group project, 2 exams and 4 speeches. Hybrid course
Great teacher. he is very entertaining in class and doesnt hold back, i would definetly take more of his classes, he pushes boundaries, and is very easy to understand. labarbera is a fun class and as long as youre on time and follow the rule (no phone, speech times) you should do fine. fun assignments that make ou think!!!
Never a dull moment. Really fun videos and lectures. Easy grader. Be on time to class. One quiz for every book chapter, but are online and easy. Take the hybrid unless you want to take exams in classes, otherwise all tests/quizzes are online. Looking for another class to take with him. he's fun.
I learned a lot. Professor Labarbera was the best professor I've taken at FSCJ so far. Most night classes are boring but business speech class was fun. His style of teaching is second to none. never boring definitely I will be recommending to friends!! Pretty relaxed class atmosphere.
Really clear in all of his assignments. Great humor and relaxed class atmosphere. Great experience!
Excellent professor. He is respectful, considerate and fun. He incorporates humor to better catch the attention of the class. He pushed me to think differently and how to respect other people''s opinions. Professor Labarbera exceeds in his career and I am sure he is recognized as doing such. It has been a true pleasure taking his class.
He is wonderful. Best professor out there. Very understanding. You won't regret taking him. He makes the class very entertaining. If I can take a ll my classes with him I would. He is very fair and reasonable. Very outgoing. He is also doesn't put a lot of work to do. Not draining at all. He is just outstanding. He cares for his students!!!!!!!!!!!
Lectures are amazing, show up, join in conversation, do work ON TIME, offers extra credit, his class is heavy to start and light in the end. Tell him any problems, he is clear on instructions, does not accept late work, however does accept doc notes. He is open and honest
Great professor and super silly! Showing up to class and participating really matters! Grades easily! Approachable, really enjoyed the class for a speech class! 10 question quiz for every chapter but NO final.
Showing up to class is mandatory and part of grade, very specific syllabus. Other than that, great lectures that compliment assignments, many memes! LOL. He is an expert in his field and great real life advice and guidance. I would him again if he taught more of my classes. Quizzes straight from online book.
Awesome professor. Pretty easy grade and funny in class. You have to show up if you want to pass. Learned lost about speech and am more comfortable in public speaking. Quizzes on every chapter but online and easy. No final exam!!! Get in with a good group for your group project. Fun class.
Definitely take him if your scared to stand in front of the class like I was. Super understanding. Quizzes are easy, 5 presentations 1 is a group. Gives extra credit like candy.
Amazing professor. Really caring. Easy grader if you do the work. Doesn't accept late work. He makes you want to achieve. His hard working kind of attitude really encourages his students to achieve. His course isn't for those that want to just breeze through and pass with C. Plan to learn but have fun. Played Jeopardy instead of a final.
Awesome. Just remember don't be late, no late work accepted, don't pull out your phone, huge no no, rent the book as it is only used for online quizzes that are very easy. his lectures are awesome and very informative & fun. Make sure you read the syllabus. Do the extra credit, it is worth it. One group project, pretty easy. No real final
I love his teaching style. FUNNY lectures, easy assgns, clear rubric. Take him! Don't buy the book since it's only for quizzes which are really easy. Don't be intimidated by the 10-page syl, basically do your work on time, meet expectations and you'll get an A. I took a 7 wk course and surprisingly it was a light workload. Recommended!!
He is an amazing professor , his lecture isn't boring at all. I took his class for 7 weeks, he was really understandable that we have other classes and also his assignments wasn't that hard. On the other hand, he is very strict but you can get the A easily! I really recommend everyone to take this class in class instead of talking it online.
Class is really not too difficult. You have to show up put your phone away and get all your work done on time. He does not take late work. You get a zero for late stuff. Don't miss a speech. The work is not hard but you have to do it. His lectures are really awesome and lots of fun. Enjoyed the class. You will too!
just finished a 7 week class with him. didn't really like the group project since two people in my group never showed. he's pretty strict about attendance and phones in class. his lectures are awesome and made me laugh a few times. i didn't like him at first cuz he's sos strict, but he's a really good choice for speech teacher. mostly fun class.
has to be the best professor ever. this was my first class after a long time not taking classes. A few years ago my last class the professor was not even close to Mr. Laberbera. Best teacher i ever had, helpful and always there. Answers all questions and grades very fast.... good feedback.. no waiting for days. AWESOME
LaBarberas class should be required for all students seeking a professional degree at FSCJ. I found his class to be more beneficial than some of the required science classes in my nursing program. Every aspect of Professor LaBarberas class was awesome. Definitely recommend him to all future students.
just finished 7 week online. lost of work. he is very strict on deadlines. some online classes u can finish stuff whenever but he sets deadlines for everything. you have to start when class starts you can't start later and catch up. speeches are really hard. he is really fast to respond to email. good teacher. regular speech class was easier.
I have never had such a thorough teacher in my life. He posts absolutely everything. He graded things super fast. I looked forward to logging in the day after submitting work, knowing it would be graded. He is very passionate about students. he posted a Home Stretch video. Ive never had a teacher, especially online, that seemed to care so much.
I took this course for seven weeks during the summer. 35 quizzes (5 each week, T/F based questions), one paper, and two MAJOR speeches. IF YOU DON'T DO BOTH SPEECHES YOU WILL NOT PASS! He grades EVERYTHING on the spot. He was a cool professor who loves what he does. DON'T TAKE ANY SPEECH CLASS ONLINE BTW! He says that it's harder.
Easy online quizzes. Really passionate teacher and my favorite at FSCJ. Don't miss a deadline or u get a 0. Doesn't take late work. Show up to class. Do all the speeches if you want to pass. Taking again in fall. Really clear grading and expectation. Mess up its on u. Fun class. Fun teacher. Helps u with extra credit.
Labarbera is an excellent professor. Show up, Do your work, and you will pass. I really enjoyed the class.
Gets back to you super fast. seven week class was intense but manageable. gives you option instead of final. funny prof definitely take him.
Professor Labarbera cares about all students. He does everything to learn about you and help you. This class is actually useful for life after college. He is pretty funny. Take him for speech. He makes it fun.
I LOVED his class! I used to hate public speaking but he makes it so easy! Took him over the summer semester for a 7-week class and it was super easy! Intro speech (30 sec), tell an appropriate joke, write an essay on a song, informative speech (3-3 1/2 min) and persuasive speech (3-3 1/2 min). Overall, he is an excellent professor!
I was not looking forward to a speech course. But once this class started, I became excited to go to class and made friends. This professor has a teaching style that works well for everyone and shows what is expected. It is a great and fun class. I have learned a lot from him along with my fellow students of which he encouraged us to engaged.
Professor Labarbera was fantastic, he made the class interesting while relating the course content to real world experience. As a student getting a 2nd degree I appreciated that he had clear expectations and guidelines but was willing to assist when needed. Excellent Professor!
It is an easy A but he is full of himself..... He has slideshows the things he does outside of class that do not relate to class at all... Make sure to read everything he posts online to a T.
Loved this class. He's a very caring professor. He teaches you things about life outside of college to help you succeed in addition to just speech stuff. He is by far that best professor yet I've had at FSCJ and wish I could take another class with him.
Wasn't sure who to take for speech. Glad I took Labarbera. Pretty easy A. Show up do your work and your good. Learned lots and would definitely take hime again. Great speech professor
One of the best elective classes I have taken. This class was amazing and everything that was needed of you was explained thoroughly and I appreciated it a lot.
Took him for Intro to Speech, very experienced and caring, but do Exactly what the syllabus says word for word. He really cares about participation and doesnt care for your excuses. Tough professor but very professional, and would take a class with him again if given the opportunity.
Professor Labarbera is an exceptional instructor and is one of the best instructors that I have ever had. He goes over and beyond to make sure that students understand the material and are engaged. There was never a dull moment in his class and I will never forget him or the lessons he taught. I would highly recommend this instructor.
Great professor. You wont really need to use the textbook except maybe for the quizzes online (all the quizzes are online). He makes the speeches really fun and gives good feedback that will actually help. If you have to take a speech class and youre scared, you should take it with him.
Attendance and punctuation is a must. Professor LaBarbera seems kind of intimidating at first but is a genuine, caring, & down to earth teacher. Very knowledgeable about public speaking & still has other speaking engagements outside of the classes so he knows what he's teaching about. READ THE SYLLABUS BEFORE THE 1ST CLASS, it will help lol
Met every Tuesday, some speech assignments that were manageable. If you're nervous to speak like me, get over it. You're gonna go, if not he fails you. 15 online quizzes and an online final exam, easy. Just keep checking his blackboard for assignments before coming to class, he might pop something. He makes the class fun. No note-takings.
Great Professor, and one I plan on taking again for classes. His expectations, grading absolutely everything is laid out in his syllabus to the detail. I really enjoyed his class more than any other this semester!
I am taking his SPC 2017 class; it is so easy. If you are scared to speak in front of a class, you have to get over it. In this class you have to give speeches. He is a easy grader, respectful, really funny and explains how to get over the fear of speaking in front of groups. He does give extra credit, but he will take if people complain.
This guy is a little scary the first day and even before class with online posts, but he's really all bark and no bite. I'm taking him now in a hybrid class that I didn't even know was hybrid and it's a pretty cool way to take the class. He has us submit all our work online and give speeches in class. He gets back to you super fast. Cool teacher.
Just finished seven weeks in business comm. class. Best instructor I've had at FSCJ. Very layed back but you learn a ton. Prof is really good about giving you information you can use right now. Group project is a news conference. He made speeches pretty easy even if you're nervous. Definitely take him!
Great class if you're scared to talk in front of a group. He has you put a name tag on your desk for class and gives you extra credit because he likes to learn your name and calls you by your first name. Speeches were pretty easy because he walks you through and grades fair. No texting in class he takes points away for it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this class. If more teachers performed the way he does, the attendance at this school would be much higher. He has been far and away the best professor I have had in my collegiate career.
This was an amazing semester, Truly a great teacher. I learned lots this semester.
Do the extra credit early in the semester because he stops it. Show up and turn everything in. Follows the syllabus exactly. Great professor for speech class. Really dreaded this class, but glad I took it with him.
Easy teacher, easy class. Show up, do what he asks and make sure to do ALL the speeches or you won't pass.
He is a good teacher who wants his students to succeed. Really passionate. He knows what he is talking about and does good lectures.
Mr. Labarbera is amazing. Yes, it's speech, but he makes it fun. You can tell how passionate he is about it. He gives a syllabus so make sure you read it, learn it, LIVE IT. For assignments, he provides a grading rubric, so there's no excuse for missing points.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! He has a a glowing rating on here and I was excited to take him, I was very wrong. Prof. Labarbera is the worst professor I've had the displeasure of having at FSCJ. The class itself is an easy A for a required class, but everything is his way or the highway, calls ppl out in class. 1/3 of my class dropped immediately.
This was my last class after graduating in May. Take the opportunity to take Professor Labarberas speech class. He lets us know expectations from day one of class and always made class interesting and fun! I would highly recommend his class to fellow students. I honestly feel that if anyone puts forth the effort you can't get less than a b.
Best Speech professor anyone could ever have! Makes giving speeches easier. There really should be no reason to get a bad grade in this class. His work is easy if you just do it and pay attention. Summer class went by really fast it was like giving a speech every week in class.
His grading criteria and expectations are in the syllabus & its very clear whats expected. He's a great professor and there's lots to learn from him. Do the work on time, show up for class and you will pass. It's that simple. If you don't pass, you can only blame yourself, you didn't do the work. 10/10 would take him again.
fun class. fun teacher. rally glad I took him. took a 7 week summer class. assignments are easy but you have to do them or you won't pass. he is very strict but you can get the A if you do the speeches and quizzes. I really recommend everyone to take this class at south campus instead of online.
This course taught me many life lessons in addition to his course lessons, Professor LaBarbera took the time to know each of his students in the quick seven week course. He was very understanding and caring. He comes off as tough but is really easy going when u get to know him.
It was nice having a professor who actually cares. Made speech interesting and fun.
Professor makes makes you like speech classes. very fun. The professor responds fast, and actually cares about his students, explains material pretty well.
I signed up for 7 wk online and read notes about how tough online speech is. When I saw it online I dropped the class and got into a 7 wk hybrid class. Online speech requirements are ridiculous. You have to get your own audience and record your speeches in front of them! His regular class is much easier. Don't take speech online it's ridiculous!
Took this class online as an elective. Mistake!!! Took a different speech class face to face at South Campus and it was great. Professor was great too (had him before) but online was way more harder. You have to record all of your speeches and upload them. Skip this class online!
Wow!!! This professor is the very caring for his students. He responded to my mail quickly and answered all my questions right away. Plus he's funny.
He tries to make the class as comfortable as possible and is very understanding of nerves. I felt he graded the speeches easily with weekly quizzes that help keep your grade up. show up for all of your speeches and you will pass. 7 week course helped me to avoid the anxiety build up to the speech because they all came so fast. He does talk alot.
Most caring professor I've ever taken. Labarbera responds to e-mail immediately and understands his students. My summer seven week class moved very fast. Plus he is fun in class. Great teacher. Take him.
Didn't need a textbook which was awesome! His quizzes were pretty easy. His lectures are fun. Make sure you show up for Professor Labarberas class. Glad I dropped online speech. This was much easier.
Labarbera didn't require a book, just online readings. And quizzes are pretty easy but you have to read. Speeches start small and work up to big speeches. He's pretty funny and helped me not be so nervous for speeches.
No book was required. Be very wary about taking this class online but don't worry he will remind you MULTIPLE times that the majority of online studies fail this class. The rules are strict but clear. Stay ahead of the game to avoid getting behind. Discussion each week and a speech every few weeks. 4 total speeches.
Funnest class ever. Speeches are easy and he has funny lectures. Actually looked forward to attending every week.
might be the toughest online class i've taken at fscj. Professor was fun and had some funny videos but getting people to sit for my speech was tough. my internet is not fast and uploading speeches took forever. give yourself time to upload and it still beats doing this class in the classroom even though its tough.
No textbook which saved $$$ for me. Professor was pretty laid back and fun. Really strict about deadlines and does not let you turn in late work!!!! Be sure to turn in everything on time!!!
No textbook but lots of reading. Maybe the hardest online class I've taken at FSCJ. Most are pretty easy, but beware, this class is not easy!!! The audience requirement and speech recording is really hard to meet. Be careful if you take this online. Professor was good about helping, but looks like half the class dropped the first week!!!
He's hilarious. But still helps you get through what you need to do to pass the class. Lots of speeches and helps with nervousness. Acts all tough in email but when you talk to him in class he helps you get through it. Definitely a good speech teacher.
He helped with my speeches. His seven week class looked really hard but if you show up to class and do the work no problem. Easy grader as long as you turn work in on time. Be warned he does not and WILL NOT TAKE WORK LATE! He requires 4 speeches but two are really short.
Slightly offending sense of humor, but a good professor. Grades fairly well. (I'm terrified of talking in front of people, froze multiple times but got a low A) He takes off points for missing classes and gives extra points for bringing a nametag on the first day, the printable is on his blackboard. Need to do all speeches, miss one and you fail.
Fun teacher. Fun Class. He grades easy but will not take late work!!!!! Gives points for having a name tag (he gives you) and does give extra credit early in the semester. Seven week class went really fast. Maybe the best professor I've had at FSCJ. Gets back to you really fast when you email him unlike many others. Grades really fast to.
If you want to LEARN take him! He does NOT take late work! Do what and you can easily get an "A" but make sure you listen! He may seem "rude" sometimes but that's just because people don't know how to follow what's expected. If you read everything on BB
Not hard at all. But doesn't accept late work. Pretty fun professor and gets back to you super fast. Grades super fast too. Lots of extra credit. Likes the Packers and gives extra credit for dumb stuff. I was super nervous about public speaking but he really helped me to not be so stressed by the end of class. Works with you one on one if you ask.
A phenomenal professor with lot's of experience in the real world. Syllabus is direct. Read it and follow it and you will pass. Modules and quizzes were easy. Some modules required easy but extra work. Speeches delivered in class are easy to pass if the rubric is followed. I highly encourage anyone to take his class. It was fun and educational.
Professor Labarbera is strict on deadlines and wont accept late work. You will learn much from this teacher. He is fun, and the class is laid back. You will be required to attend class, and never miss a speech day. If you take the 7 week course always remember to check blackboard or you will be hurting. Grades like Santa Claus, take it in person.
Just finished his class and found him to be hilarious. He is super strict on deadlines. Gives lots of extra credit. Easy grader. However if you miss a required speech or don't turn in work you'll fail. Helped me to not be so nervous giving speeches. Take him! His class is fun!
Best professor I've had at FSCJ. Graded my work so quickly and actually provided good feedback so I knew what to work on for my next assignment. Gets back to you super fast when you email him. Funny plus he is an easy grader. Doesn't take late work. Taking him for another class in Spring!
Prof L is very straightforward and no-nonsense about speech. He is a quality professor to show you the standard on which you will be evaluated in your career. Prof L is all about success going forward. This was a very good experience for me. He is a very reassuring instructor, who gives you practical advice if speeches scare you.
Professor Labarbera is one of the best instructors I have ever had. He goes over and beyond to make sure his class understands material. There was never a dull moment in this class. I will always remember his lessons about speech and the real world. I noticed stuff we talked about in class at my job right away. I highly recommend him.
great class, great content. one of the best professors i have ever had
I recommend Professor Labarbera for anyone who needs to take speech and I would take a course by him again. He is very straight forward, fun and actually an easy A if you actively engage in the course.
Would recommend taking!! I hate speaking in front of others, but he made this class very enjoyable. 3 speeches total, one is an introduction speech submitted via YouTube, the other two are in front of the class. He is an easy grader, just do your work and you'll get an easy A.
Joe has to be one of the best teachers that I have had at FSCJ. He makes class fun and interesting, which then makes me want to show up to class everyday and not just sit there but actually get involved and participate in in-class activities.
I really needed help with public speaking. So thankful that I took Professor LaBarbera's class. He is a reassuring instructor, who gives you practical advice. I would recommend him to any student, especially, those who struggle with addressing an audience. This class turned out to be very informative and enjoyable!
Oh Professor LaBarbera, first impression was not so great, many people dropped the class because of this. This was the best option for me, it was hybrid so we went to class 1/3 of the time. He has his opinions and he is a little quirky, but what matters is that you can choose any topic for you TWO speeches! It was great minus the busy work.
I really enjoyed this class and really wish that I was able to get into his SPC2065 as well, but it''s completely full. FSCJ needs more professors with his enthusiasm, energy and expertise!
If all professors were like LaBarbera more students would be really engaged in class and their would be less failures. Professor LaBarbera hands down is the best professor i have had at FSCJ. I learned so much and in his class and it made me a better public speaker.
Mr. LaBabra was an amazing professor! I would recommend him to any student looking to thrive in public speaking. Funny and ez going.
Great Professor for hybrid course. No nonsense, very straightforward, come to class on time, do your work accordingly, and make the best grade possible!!! Fun teacher too.
I am terrified of public speaking so I took this class online. It was sooooo hard. Labarbera comes off as kind of tough because there is no late work and you have to have people for your speeches. Near the end he allowed us to make up for a speech if we didn't do it right which helped me pass!!! Online speech was way harder than on campus.
Professor LaBarbera is the ideal teacher. He made class very enjoyable His teaching style was light, conversational and fun. With it beinga speech class, I often analyzed his presenting skills and utilized some of his techniques. I would take another class just because he''s teaching it.
Joe LaBarbera is a wonderful professor was amazing. I only wish I could have taken him for speech. My speech teacher was just OK. His stories from working in tv made class fun. You can tell he really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Taking him for news reporting this summer.
Professor Labarbera is an absolute master of his trade and genuinely cares about his students.
No textbook which is awesome! Saves me $$. show up and do the work and it's an easy A. Definitely a different type of teaching than I was used to but I liked it!
Ive never been so happy about a grade because this class was a big challenge for me. He works with you to help make you comfortable about public speaking. I am feeling a little more confident after this class. He's funny too!
I took his 7 week summer course. Hes blunt, funny, and cares. He really knows what hes talking about and understands speech anxiety. Skip one class though and youre out. Pretty easy grader other than the last speech, just make sure to read everything carefully so you dont miss anything.
Labarbera did a fantastic job of showing my summer class about the different kind of communication and how its everywhere. He's all about real world experience not just teaching out of a book. We didn't even have a book for this class. Awesome teacher.
Amazing professor. Really helped me overcome my nervousness. I dreaded taking speech class but he really helped me through it. Worked with me on every speech which you start out small and get to the longer ones later. Fun class too.
Pretty good professor. He can be rude and has that "I hate millennial's!" kind of attitude. Either way his teaching was decent, and the assignments given were pretty easy. He's an easy grader, just make sure you follow the directions for everything. Also, don't miss class. Class was pretty fun too.
Awesome teacher. Just finished seven week class. Probably the best class I've taken at FSCJ. Easy grader, funny and makes you look forward to coming to class.
Professor Labarbera is really fun. He penalizes you for being absent but is a pretty easy grader when it comes to turned in work. He helped with my nervousness. He won't take late work and give you a zero. I took his hybrid course and it went by very quickly and only met one day a week. One of the most fun professors I've had at FSCJ.
Labarbera doesn't use a textbook so that saves $$ and he's funny. You have to go to class or he takes away points. Pretty easy grader. Lots of little speeches and two big speeches. Pretty easy going but sometime can be very tough if you make excuses or miss an assignment.
Highly recommended class with a great professor! Mr. LaBarbera was one the best teachers I've ever had. His syllabus is really long. He did not disappoint at all, except for the fact that he's a Packers fan and let's you know it. i learned so much. I love speaking now!
Professor LaBarbera is the best teacher ! I can say he made me more comfortable in speaking in front of people. He explained everything so well. He gives examples also shares the best way to do homework and other stuff . Wish I could take him for all my classes.
Best instructor I have ever had before!!! Amazing teacher lifestyle, i learned so much. I love speaking now!
Mr. LaBarbera was one the best teachers ever! Would defanitely recommend. I was a little scared reading the syllabus but he was a great teacher. He did not disappoint at all, except for the fact that he's a Packers fan. Go Bears!
Labarbera teaches you to present yourself. Definitely goes beyond the textbook and has fun presentations. Class moves pretty fast, and you have to show up. For sure take him best teacher I've had at FSCj.
One of the best teachers I've had. He is VERY clear about the rules and homework deadlines. If you miss an assignment you'll get a zero. People complain about this but if you act like an adult, read your syllabus, do your work, you won't miss an assignment. As far as public speaking, he definitely knows and teaches the way to success!! Loved him!
I took a hybrid 7-week intro to public speaking. He's experienced in mass communications and offers a refreshing worldview to academia (he's a Reagan Republican). His lectures are incredible and his strict policies motivated me to take school seriously. He teaches because he cares about our generation's thinking and work ethic. He's worth taking!
Best speech teacher ever! Usually people are nervous about giving speeches but he created a great environment and made us all feel comfortable with giving speeches. He provides great feedback and is really funny. Loved this class!
If you need to take a Speech class he is a must take! He keeps it real and is very clear about what's expected. READ. THE. SYLLABUS. No room for complaint if he literally spells it out for you. Readings are online, as are quizzes. If I needed to take an advanced Speech class, I'd take him again in a heartbeat. You will become a better speaker!
My professor was absolutely amazing and better than i could have asked for. I was so scared about this class but he made it very comfortable and it felt like a safe space. I would definitely take him again and I would recommend him to everyone if I could. My sister was also taking speech online and her professor was a whole different experience.
I was extremely satisfied with Professor LaBarbera and RTV intro to broadcasting. I am very glad I took this class and would highly recommend it. Professor LaBarbera adapted to online class very well. My other professors just disappeared but not this class.
Professor LaBarbera was a good professor. He is very specific in what he wants. He is very clear in his grading criteria and his time line. He does not accept late work. He is willing to help if you ask for it EARLY. He does give extra credit, BUT DO NOT ASK FOR IT.
The absolute worst professor Ive ever taken. Extremely rude when you ask questions, is disrespectful and thinks hes some big shot. Claims to grade easy but is actually tough. He will not allow you to make-up any assignments, no matter the reason. I had straight As until this class dropped my GPA. Do NOT take!!
He is very clear about his expectations. If you have an issue he quickly responds. Overall he seemed to have a good sense of humor and very motivating! Follow the syllabus and put in a good effort and you will pass easily. He does not have unrealistic expectations.
He gets back to you on e-mails right away and is a super fast grader. The biggest thing to to make sure to read the syllabus!!! I did good but that's cuz I knew what you did had to follow directions. He was a pretty easy grader as long as you turned in all of the work and did what you were supposed to do.
One of the best classes I've ever taken. Wish it was in person.
VERY strict, gives point deductions for inconveniences like emailing about extra credit, HAVE to do every speech and requirement or else you will fail the class. He also wouldn't allow me to have less than 5 audience members and said he needs proof my audience is high risk for Covid. Doesnt allow late work and said family death isn't an excuse.
Even though all the other rates show that the professor is amazing, my buddy and I dropped out 1 week. He does not grade well, very strict on what to do. The smallest detail will have you lose points. IF you miss an assignment you get one chance to make it up and that's it. IF you email him about any assignments not done you lose points.
This is a great class to take if you like: Reading a 20 page syllabus which he will follow to the letter with zero second chances. Getting 50 points removed from your final grade for emailing the teacher about anything he deems bad in the syllabus such as missed assignments extra credit and so on. Getting taught by someone with a stick up his ass
I just finished this class online and was going to rate him when I saw three terrible reviews in a row. That was just the opposite of my experience. He was a pretty easy grader, but you do have to do the work. I took a seven week class and it was really fast paced. If you're not prepared it would be hard to get done. I liked professor labarbara.
One of the most helpful and fundamental things that Professor Labarbera did was clearly lay out his expectations early on. I completely understood the syllabus and the fact that there would be no exceptions for any student. This made the class seem much more fairer. He was funny too. Much better than all my other online live classes.
Nitpicky & unreasonable! Make sure you read every line of his 12 page, 10 pt. syllabus, or risk losing 10 points or more on assignments. In fact, make sure you go above and beyond because even when you follow the instructions he could arbitrarily decide ur work isn't good enough. DO NOT take the fast course if you value your sanity or have a life.
I consider him my best professor yet, since I knew his expectations up front. I received helpful comments in a timely manner on every assignment. He grades assignments really fast! I loved that. I wish I needed another speech class so I could take another one of his classes! N
I would highly recommend Mr. LaBarbera. I dredded speech class but he made it fun and enjoyable. He was my only teacher who knew how to work technology during class. I feel I'm a much stronger speaker due to the constructive criticism I received. We did have a lot of people drop in my online class, but he is the best teacher I have had at FSCj.
I almost withdrew from this class once I got the 15 page syllabus and saw all the strict criteria I did not think was feasible for an online speaking class. I am SO glad I didn't. This was a great class! Very diverse speech content and he made it fun even though we had to do all our speeches online!
His syllabus is ridiculous, but now I see why its so long. After reading the mixed reviews I decided to take a seven week online class and am so glad I did. It went by so fast! Labarbera is super helpful for extra help with my speeches. Very reachable and personable once you get to know him. Highly recommend him, but be prepared for the syllabus!
Overall he is an exceptional instructor. I wish I would have taken a longer course just so we could have gone to depth a little deeper in regards to the course material but nonetheless, great teacher. Seven week course just went bye to fast. Lots of speeches and lots of work, but its not hard you just have to do it.
I really enjoy my experience in Professor LaBarbera's online live speech class. He is an amazing instructor. His style kept me engaged and eager to return for the next live class to see what we were learning next. I really wish that he offered classes in my line of studies, I would love to take another of his classes.
Passed class with an A but professor is so unprofessional and rude. I would never take his class again. I took in the classroom 2019 so this is late review. Worst I've had at FSCJ. One thing he preaches, don't believe what you see online (including his scores on this site). Be warned. He aims to embarrass you and make you feel uncomfortable.
I wish he tought more classes at FSCJ. He's the best professor I've had so far and by the far the best since the Covid 19 issue. He puts all of the assignments for the whole entire 7weeks online at the start of the class and you meet once a week to give speeches and have discussions.
I would definately recommend this professor to many more students. He truly has a passion for doing this and its obivous in class. He is really enthusiasitc and he makes these funny little videos and sends them to us. He is very strict about late work and does not except it. If you are late for an online meeting he deducts points from attendance.
This class is lots of work but ultimately, he will help you become a better public speaker.
Professor LaBarbera is great and has his own memorable characteristics that separate him from other professors, but there is one trait that jumps out when getting to know Joe. It is passion. It is passion. I could see how some hate that because he doesn't take any excuses. Never have I met a professor with such passion towards their work.
Easy class to pass but doesnt prepare you to actually work in the field of journalism. Just agree with him. Class consists of story-telling with his former news coworker about experiences in the newsroom. Hardly any use of textbook or textbook language. No specifics about news TV other than its hard and no one cares about your opinion.
Mr. LaBarbera really took my weaknesses into consideration when going through this course and had great input to help me excel. I strongly recommend him to anyone who wants to take this course, especially if you have a lot of anxiety surrounding public speaking as I did in it. An absolutely amazing instructor. I couldn't ask for a better one.
Really eye opening for me about how real news really works today. Professor shared tons of insight and really prepared me for what to expect without too much book work. He gives you lots of book exercises for practice but the online live meetings were awesome. Great stories with people in news and the final was a discussion! Great class!
Professor Labarbera was the best teacher I've had during the pandemic. He has a way of encouraging you to participate and gives everyone a chance to share their thoughts. He graded mostly on participation and the final was a discussion. He shared great stories from being in news reporting and helped me understand what to expect in the real world.
Love Joe! Very down to earth, fun professor. Returned to school after years. He made it easy. I think they should have more professors like him at FSCJ. He makes you want to attend online class, or not mind attending it. Although I hate doing speeches, even live online. Professor LaBarbera makes it easy to do.
I would refer this Professor to other students. I was skeptical but am glad I took this class. He was frank and honest gave clear expectations and assisted with answering every question to clarify any confusions. I feel prepared to start my own blog about current events, weather and celebrity life. Thank you FSCJ and thank you professor Labarbera.
Just finished a seven week online speech class that met once a week on video. it ended a week early. The good thing about LaBarbera is he helps you with everything. If you are in class and just do the work it's an easy A. He doesn't take late work. He does give lots of extra credit and likes the Packers. Would definitely recommend this professor.
Good class. Professor LaBarbera really helped with my nervousness. This was my first class back on campus in a year. Wearing a mask in speech class was weird but this class was so much more fun than my other classes.
Probably the easiest class I had this semester. Professor Labarbera's feedback was so fast from when I submitted assignments that it always helped me with my next assignment. He does these weird little videos, and a lot of them, but they actually help you better understand the material. Hardest thing was finding the live audience for speeches.
Great professor!! Enjoyed the class very much. I love the energy of Professor Labarbera. He is so nice and his syllabus is extremely available and easy to understand. This was my favorite live online class.
Fun presentations made me want to come to my only on campus class during Covid. Uses very recent, such as happened yesterday, to use as examples in his course. Very clear on expectations if you listen and very understanding when it comes to grades. Will recommend to my girlfriend and would recommend to anyone else needing a speech class.
He was very mean. Every time I sent him an email of my issues or told him that I have having difficulties he answered me mockingly. He never took my problems seriously and didnt work with me but attacked me when ever I emailed him. Easy class but very difficult professor.
Class requires work but work with your professor and you will pass with good grades.
I'm about to finish up a seven week hybrid class with Prof. LaBarbera, and this has got to be one of the best speech professors out there. I genuinely hate presenting speeches, but I don't hate his class at all. He is understanding, an overall generous grader, and a pretty chill guy. Just do your work and put in the effort and you'll do just fine.
Mr. Joe will challenge you to think critically, preparing you for the real world while doing so. He is very funny and makes class go by really fast with his humorous PowerPoints and real-world examples of speech application. I found this to be the most helpful course I have taken at the college with managing my speech anxiety. I highly recommend.
Joe turned out to be a fantastic Instructor. After the first class I had my doubts and didn't think I would like him or the class but after a couple of weeks he has become one of my favorite Instructors I have ever had. He clearly lets you know what he expects. If you communicate with him you should have no problems passing the class.
Joe is great. Took a hybrid course over the summer. He does put emphasis on working ahead and showing up for class. He stresses that you hold your destiny in your own hands. His class prepares you for being successful in life by using critical thinking.
Context and perspective! Those two words really stuck with me after taking Prof. LaBarbera class. Don't let the syllabus scare you, he's actually a great guy with lots of experience. If you show up, do the work, and most importantly communicate EFFECTIVELY you will do great. 10/10 :D
After dealing with ADD and social anxiety even depression, I was really afraid of taking this online course. He saw my potential me and gave me the confidence I need to speak in front of the class. He also gave me a second chance to do a speech I missed in his class. Take this course! Im taking him again for JOU 2100 this fall!
Excellent professor, this class however is very challenging, especially probably with him. He is adamant about staying ahead, you will need to stay ahead to succeed. He says he grades like Santa Claus, eh I dont think so. This was a 7 week class, so very fast paced. Live speeches are reqd. Tip: respond to at least 3 peers in discussions, not 2.
I'd like to point out that his syllabus is 16 pages long and he gives NO RUBRICS for any of his assignments, and I lost 6 points out of 20 because I put my name on a paper. Apparently you are meant to submit writing anonymously. It's in the syllabus, yes, but it's nowhere in the rubric or on the assignment page itself.
This professor stressed me out beyond belief. He required 5 people in all of the speeches at all times. These people must pay attention throughout the presentation of the speech and if they did not, then they did not count as a person and the assignment is an automatic fail, which results in a failing grade for the course. Don't recommend at all.
Overall he is an exceptional instructor. I wish I would have taken a longer course just so we could have gone to depth a little deeper in regards to the course material but still, great teacher. He's blunt and doesn't sugarcoat. His way of teaching was not only helpful but entertaining as well. He seems to really enjoy and love what he is doing.
JLababera is no Joke, although he is funny. He takes hisO assignments seriously and is very clear and concise. I would take his journal class again. It was challenging yet very rewarding I have learnt skills and information from him that will follow me for the rest of my life. The value of information received is worth more than the course
Was really dredding speech class live online but this turned out better than expected. Wasn't sure what to expect. Labarbera made it kind of fun. Definitely different than my other professors. I was really nervous about speech, but he was wonderful in proving feedback and I enjoyed the discussions we participated in. I would definitely take him.
He was the BEST professor I had this far. Do not let the syllabus scare you he will explain it to you. I had him for speech class and he put his heart into teaching. He replied to my emails within 5-10 minutes. If you are I need clarification reach out to him and he will help you. If you are afraid to take it do not be. I had him for seven weeks.
I had a zoom meeting for 2 classes the same day at the exact same time and one of them being his class and I joined the other class because it was the first on to do for canvas and he said his was mandatory to pass the class and wouldnt even give me the option to make up that grade and did nothing but talk smack about everything I submitted
Great professor, made speech so much better and there was no stress involved. Just do your work and do your speeches and you will pass. All work is open from 1 day of class so no excuse for not doing it.
His class is very easy. I came in expecting it was going to be hard but he made his expectations very clear. He gave great feedback in a timely manner and let you know exactly what to fix. Class is mandatory and he gives weekly quizzes and two speeches which are extremely easy. Show up to class and complete all assignments and you'll pass.
He was very straightforward. Didnt sugarcoat anything. Very helpful and the work was very easy and simple.
READ THE SYLLABUS! If you don't read the syllabus you will not pass the class. You have to be very careful on what you submit because you only have one chance to submit it and the live classes you have to join if not you don't pass that assignment and won't get attendance points. The class was ok but you have to read the assignment very carefully
Mr. LaBarbera was overall an excellent teacher. He was funny, relatable, and easy to talk to.
Would take again
Mr. Labarbera is a very great teacher and is very clear on his expectations. Follow the guidelines and you will more then pass
He's a great teacher, he actually wants you to become a better public speaker. The homework and speeches can get a little tedious but honestly, it's not too bad. Just follow the speech requirements and you get a good grade. Even if you're bad at public speaking, as long as you show you're trying to get better, you will get a good grade.
As he did not post the 20pg highlighted like crazy syllabus until the day the class started I was already failing as it is "required" to work ahead and if you did not have "a daily online presence" you fail. 5 people required for every speech. No exceptions for anything unless you are in the military. His favorite word is "zero". No, thank you.
I found professor Labarbara to be the most inspiring professor so far at Fscj. He's funny and I looked forward to coming to his class. His syllabus is really long but EVERYTHING is in it! If you show up and do the work he is a really easy grader.
I took SPC2608 online. The readings for each module were in the module & not too heavy. Quizzes were only worth 10 points, but discussions and speeches weighed the most. He is grades fair. If you put effort in and complete your assignments early, then you will do fine. You will need a real-life audience of 5-7 people for each speech.
No textbook. Mostly graded on speeches and discussion. Everything is open book, open note. I just finished a seven week speech class that met on Saturdays. He made it fun. I dropped the online class the first week because you need to find a live audience to give your speeches to. Highly recommend this professor.
Mr. LaBarbera is absolutely amazing. Although his 15 page syllabus may seem daunting, the reasoning behind it is quite hilarious. You can tell that he passionate about his job. As long as you show up to class and do the work you will easily make an A, because as he says "I grade like Santa Claus." I highly recommend everyone take him.
Take this class in person! I did a hybrid 7-week course. We met about 3 or 4 times in person. 4 speeches total; these are required! Two quizzes and two discussion boards a week. Do more than what is asked and post at least two days before the deadline (Friday's & Saturday's), and you will get 100s. Friendly and funny guy, I would recommend him.
Great Professor! Responds very quickly when you need help. When class online, at least 5 or more audience for your speech is a must. The class will make you better at not being nervous while standing in front of a crowd full of people. Overall easy class. Make sure to turn in assignments ahead of time. Remember practice makes perfect. Ms. Nance
Professor LaBarbera's class really changed my outlook on media, and now I'm skeptical of literally everything. He's really good at explaining aspects of the media industry and gives some stories of his experiences. As long as you do the work on time and don't put your opinion into your writing, you're golden. Amazing professor in my opinion!
Mr. LaBarbera's class will require your full participation. He is flexible and will give you good advise and useful information. He always says the class is about the fundamentals of speaking; youre not expected to be an expert. You need to show up and do the work. If you listen and follow instructions, you will do fine. There were 2 main speeches.
Just started a live online class with this professor and after two weeks it's really making me more comfortable speaking to the class. He's funny and has a way to make you feel ad ease. Plus he's already gave us extra credit for picking the winner of the packers game. He's a huge packers fan.
The room begins to illuminate mist enters through the open doorway. Students begin to tremble at the mere presence entering the room. *Boom* With a bright flashing light he enters the room, "It is I Joe LaBarbera". The mention of his name cuts through the room splitting time and reality itself. You realize the reviews were real he is Sigma Chad.
If you're expecting an easy class. NOPE don't do it, syllabus is 16 pg long and alot gray area with it. Makes no sense at times and if your late points gone, dont attend don't get a grade. phone goes off you get a zero. anyone with adult responsibilities dont take the class you most likely will have difficulties he want work 72 hr before due date.
This guy is way to political and he makes the works based on his views. If you suck up well, youll be fine. Otherwise, good luck! I recommend finding a different pro for this course immediately!!!!!
Just delivered my final speech in this 7 wk online class. Pretty easy class. Show up and give your speeches. Seven week online class requires an audience you have to find. My brother took him in person and it was even easier. Easy class, funny professor and NO TEXTBOOK PURCHASE REQUIRED!!!!!!
Funny teacher. Easy A. Give a few speeches and all quizzes are online open internet. Labarbera made me laugh more than a few times in class. I took hybrid so we gave speeches on campus in class. Tried online with different prof and it pretty much sucked. She made you have an audience for online speeches. On campus was super easy.
Professor LaBarbera taught this course in a professional manner that allowed a shy introvert like me to feel relaxed while talking in front of the class. I tried taking this class online with another teacher but it was much harder because you had to have an audience. I was really nervous about this class but having LaBarbera made class fun.
If you are an anxious person this is the perfect professor for you. Professor Joe starts each class with interesting slides, then we discuss them. It was a 7 week course so working ahead is expected but it also makes sense the way he has the assignments set up. You literally cannot mess this up unless you do not try. P.S. he likes diet coke!
I was so scared of this class and it turned out to be my favorite class. Professor LaBarbera did not have the same boring slides as most professors. He played videos, made jokes and there was no textbook to buy. All the quizzes were online and there were no exams. He helped with my being so nervous for giving a speech and made coming to class fun.
I enjoyed this shortened course. I have a hatred of public speaking but I felt prepared an confident giving speeches in his classroom, which is something I have never felt before. I appreciate what he taught us. His lectures are no boring either.
There was one meeting that left a lasting memory on me. I had given a speech and the feedback was incredibly harsh to the point another student made a comment to him on it. He was very harsh to her and very disrespectful to a lot of students that day, FOR NO REASON. Besides that there was a good bit of work as well.
I wish he taught more classes than speech. Je os by far the best professor I've had so far. He truly has a passion for what he is doing.
Joe LaBarbera is a wonderful professor was amazing. I only wish I could have taken him for speech. You could tell he really cares about his students and wants them to succeed.
He does about 2 big speeches 2 very small speeches. You have 1 discussions and 1 quiz every week but they are easy. He is a teacher you have the get used to. But the class is so worth it. Easy A. Just show up and do your work
I work two jobs and was glad I had labarbera for speech. No textbook which saved money. I thought I was getting a C but somehow I ended up with a B because he offers extra credit if you come to class everyday. Highly recommend this professor.
He was alright but expects you to work ahead on everything and turn it in at least 3 days early even with a posted due date. The class itself wasn't bad just a bit of work. The only thing I can say is if you decide to take him READ THE SYLLABUS or you won't pass. He tries to make things more difficult than they are and loves to brag about himself.
His class is pretty easy overall if you do your work ahead of time. I usually recorded multiple speeches in one day so I would not have to worry about rushing to get a group together last minute (recommend doing this). Make sure to dress nice, do not state your name and what the speech is about in the beginning, do not state opinions. READ SYLLABUS
If you take LaBarbera make sure you read the syllabus!!! It's really long but he jokes about it all the time in class saying it used to be short. I really love this class. It is fine, yet very informative. I like the he gives lectures. He keep everyone interested all the time. We give our final speech this week and its an easy class.
PAY ATTENTION TO THE SYLLABUS! It NEVER changes, and he is extremely serious about it. Takes it very seriously but prepares you for everything! The hardest part was finding 5ppl for audience. Fun professor sends lots of funny videos.
Intro to Broadcasting was so much fun. Not really any tests, just open book quizzes online that were super easy. The last couple of weeks we watched old WWE wrestling on MTV and some old TV shows and it was really interesting. Attendance is required and he takes the syllabus pretty seriously. Easy A if you show up to class.
This was a great summer class with a great professor. I learned a lot, and plan to use much of the information for the rest of my life. Professor Labarbera cares about the students who care about the class, and provides plenty of opportunity for the student's that don't care. I have a hatred of public speaking, but I felt confident giving speeches.
The very first thing you need to do is read Professor LaBarbera's syllabus. He makes it VERY clear what he expects and even advises you to work ahead. It is a hefty workload but if you stay ahead of the game, the class is pretty easy. I learned a lot in this course and would take any class Professor LaBarbera teaches. Just be prepared to work!
Show up for the class because attendance matters. If you don't like his sense of humor, you will get offended. He loves to pick on people and talk about himself. If you don't know the answer to something he will put you on the spot. All around, easy grader but if you've got any bit of general anxiety, steer clear of this professor.
This class greatly helped me. I find myself being more confident when speaking publicly. This class taught me to be more confident as I am really nervous but the professor made it easy to have fun, and its really a fun class too. I just did my last speech in the seven week class, and the professor ended class early.
Professor LaBarbera lays everything out from the syllabus to the very end of class. I was in a 7-week course and the workload was manageable, the due dates were laid out from the beginning of the course, and as long as you do the work by the due date and show up to the designated class time this class is passable. He gives you everything you need.
Mr. LaBarbera is a very fun, exciting, and interesting instructor. We have class during scheduled class time and he is very strict, yet nice. He prepares us for the real world and also offer many extra credit chances and advice. I think every class he teaches he is made for, because he believes in us.
If you have less than 5 people in your speeches he will deem you as trying to "game the system" and will report you for academic dishonesty. Also, he will remove a letter grade from your final score for asking for many things including extra credit, engaging in "excessive communication", and contacting him through canvas messenger.
Signed up for a 7 week online class I didn't realize I need 5 people to watch my speeches. He is letting me do my speech to his other class on campus. You need to get audiences for every speech if you take it online. I called him and he was really nice giving me options that helped my situation. I graduate in May and need this class! He helped!
My class started with 30 students and ended up with 8 students left and we were an only 7 week course. I would never take this Proffesor again, and if you ask about a grade you were given he will drop you a whole letter grade. In the discussions to get a 70 you have to respond to 5 people and if you respond to four he gives you a zero.
Awesome teacher! If there are any problems, just get in contact with him. Offers email or phone calls. Gives great feedback and replies back in a timely matter. Great teacher, the work is not too difficult. Be prepared to participate in discussions. Syllabus has EVERY answer to just about any question.
I really enjoyed Joe's class and really with that I was able to share how much fun it was and how much energy he shared in class with everyone. He was inspirational and made the dredded speech class fun.
The class itself is not hard. Reading the syllabus I felt doomed but, once I spoke with him, my observation of who he really is was all wrong. He is straightforward on what he will and will not allow. Talk to him by phone, he is really not arrogant nor insensitive. I look forward to becoming a prestigious speaker like him one day.
This is the speech class for you IF YOU TRULY CARE ABOUT BECOMING A BETTER SPEAKER. Professor Labarbera is passionate about helping students improve their communication skills. Come to this course with an open mind. The assignment load is not heavy, Just come to class and read the syllabus. plenty of opportunities to succeed.
Professor Labarbera teaches a class that stands out from the average professor. His classes were some of the most interesting and engaging I've had at this college. He is a very kind grader and very reasonable, he cares about his students and does his best to help them succeed.
Professor LaBarbera, is very frank and straight forward. He is easy to contact and also very understanding. He is also serious about his assignments. Attend class, complete your assignments on time and ask questions if you have any. I am leaving this course feeling like a professional investigator and Journalist.
I love this class, best time I have ever had, yes there is work but it is well worth it. Professor seems to be a bit harsh, but in honesty is straightforward and to the point. He is very flexible and fair with his grading overall and wants his students to at least show up and participate, to get a great experience.
Professor LaBarbera has a great sense of humor and a very neutral way of providing feedback. He is straight to the point and enforces everything within his syllabus. He is graceful but he expects you to do the work, as expected. I highly recommend his class. I enjoyed it! I plan on taking additional classes with him. He likes to keep things fun!
Class is pretty easy as long as you agree with him on everything. Put your beliefs aside and get the A i guess. Its very hard for him to remain neutral on news articles despite his claim on neutrality
I love this class so much! This class isn't over until August 17th. When I registered for the course I was like "Ugh speech" but since being in this class I've learned a lot and had many opportunities outside of class to speak in front of people. Make SURE you take it in person! You won't succeed how you think you will online. 10/10.
Great professor! Personally, I was dreading to take this class. He gave me the motivation to break through this fear. Feel alot more comfortable speaking in front of crowds. Very clear with his expectations and has interactive discussions. Enjoyed going to this class!
I genuinely never thought that I would actually benefit from a class. I am now mildly comfortable with the idea of speaking in front of a large crowd. The Prof. has real life experience and that is why this just works. Biggest advice when taking this class: Ask all the questions that you have! He is very considerate and will be happy to answer.
Professor LaBarbera provided great feedback, hilarious lectures, available anytime you have questions! The class was very entertaining, and I grew bounds with my classmates. I have met very awesome people. Rate 10/10. I would recommend taking this class again.
Mr. LaBarbera is a really cool teacher. His lectures are never boring. He's pretty laid back and is pretty fair on his grading. As long as you put in the work, he'll give you a good grade. I highly recommend taking him for Fundamentals of Public Speaking. I took his 7-week course and got an A. Also, be sure to ready the syllabus! ;)
Professor LaBarbera is a fantastic teacher! He is thoughtful, caring, kindhearted and does not include ANY of his political views in his lessons. I would HIGHLY recommend this course to anyone; you won't be disappointed! (I'm lying don't take this class)
I will definitely take any course Professor LaBarbera teaches. You can tell he loves what he does, and he made such a nerve rattling subject (giving speeches) fun. The assignments are not hard, and he is very understanding. Show up, be respectful, and complete the assignments on time and it's an easy A.
Great professor! and great class to learn many things from as well. It's not an easy class, it does require some time. However, if you read the instructions for each speech or assignment and follow them correctly you should be good. Definitely recommend taking public speaking with Professor LaBarbera!
I took his 7 week fall class and he was great. He is very straight forward about a lot of things, and will tell you straight up how things are going to work in his class. Attendance IS mandatory. You have 2 fairly big speeches to present out of 5. Very easy class, just show up and do the work.
I took his 7 week course, his syllabus may look scary; it's really not. He just has very clear expectations and rules. Prof. LaBarbera really tries to make his students feel as comfortable as possible. There were only 2 BIG speeches and Attendance is MANDATORY. However, he makes his classes fun and engaging so he makes showing up easy! Take him!
Read your syllabus, and don't let it scare you off. He is organized, grades promptly, is accessible and wants you to succeed. All you have to do is follow the syllabus and put in effort. Quizzes require you to read the assigned reading. He gives you multiple chances to take the first two and accepts the last recorded grade (not the highest).
Amazing professor! I took this as a 7A course and secured an A! If you stick to the rules in the syllabus, listen intently to all the lectures, and show initiative and effort in your speeches, you should be good! As someone who gets very anxious about public speaking, his class was a very comfortable and fun environment to learn about it!
Firm, fair, and funny. Professor LaBarbera has set standards for his class he expects to be followed. Nothing difficult, but it fosters mutual respect. His lectures are engaging and his feedback on speeches are insightful. If you put in the effort and take his constructive feedback to heart, you will do well.
Professor LaBarbera has a very detailed syllabus that explain his expectations. If I would have put more effort into this class I would have gotten an A, clearly I did not. Very easy class if you are willing to put in the effort. Do the extra credit, its easy and it will help at the end.
Hybrid: meet in-person once-a-week, textbook and most of class material is online. Tags explain mostly. Just do good on the speeches (big parts) and do the papers at the beginning and you're really set. Taking notes on how to do the speeches when he gives those lectures will be really helpful. Overall seemed scary, but he's straight to the point.
His expectations cannot be more clear. His instructions for assignments are extremely detailed. The only way you can go wrong is by not turning things in by the deadline. I scored perfect on all my speeches, but missed a couple of the discussion deadlines. I usually get A's, but ended up with the only "B" I've ever received in college. My fault.
Prepare two main speeches. You should be fine to take him. I'm a very shy person, but I still made an A. Go to the writing lab and ask for help. Practice multiple times before delivering your speech. Highly recommended to take the in-person class with him. Also, he gives you a chance to get an extra credit if you take the final exam early.
The first day we just looked at memes half the class. You really get comfortable fast. First easy speeches are done from your seat. Then two real speeches you need to focus on. He is hilarious and cares. Fast responder. Just don't miss class especially for the 7 week. Really enjoyed this class. The final is long but not proctored or timed.
I wanted to hate him.. 23 pg syllabus, 100 question quiz on syllabus, points off for a lot, and a lot of nitpicky things for speeches. He is VERY clear on expectations, but wants you to do well. 2 major speeches, 4 small, discussion posts much have TEN replies. Follow exactly what he wants and succeed. Must have 5 live audience members present.
A good professor overall, he wants you to succeed. It is a super easy class, just follow the very detailed instructions and syllabus, and ask questions if needed. He replies/grades quickly and provides constructive criticism to help you succeed as well. Live audience requires five people; this is a school requirement not just the class.
This professor was the best I had this semester. He had very clear expectations and provided good feedback. I learned a lot more than I anticipated and I am taking him again next semester. I suggest this professor for whatever class is offered.
You have 5 assignments in the first week, one of which requires gathering people within that week. I would've been fine with it if I knew ahead of time with more than a week. The first quiz is the syllabus quiz with 100 questions. The professor claims they finished it in 12 minutes (8 questions in a min), getting 95%, not even a perfect score.
Seemed awful the first week but don't fret! He is very clear with what his expectations are for the entire semester. Attendance is REQUIRED. If you don't show up you will NOT PASS. His feedback on speeches is very constructive and well done. Overall just show up and do the speeches and participate when necessary and its an easy A. Great professor.
Joe Labarbera was awesome. Even though class was on Saturday he made the class fun and a positive environment to learn. He has vast knowledge and experience in speaking publicly. Be smart and read the syllabus! If you doubt your ability to speak in front of people, this is the class to help you get over that. I'm ready to take his next class.
Take the in person class if you can. Made a Saturday class enjoyable. Dry cut: do what you're told = good grade. Negative reviews come from overly sensitive people, or people that didn't know you need 5 audience members for online version (college requirement, not his only). Good professor.
Don't let the syllabus scare you. He is a great professor with multiple extra credit opportunities! Professor Labarbera is very, very clear on what he wants to see, and it isn't that much. Just be a good student and complete your work/speeches. Two major speeches and he is lenient on grading to the extent of how hard you try/communicate. Fun class!
Mr LaBarbera's 2608 Speech class was beyond what I imagined. He was personable, knowledgeable, and empathetic. Mr LaBarbera grades very fairly, gives plenty of guidance on how speeches should be delivered and what is expected. Gives excellent feedback. I highly recommend this class!
