If you need hist core out of the way, Prof. Lapsley will do. Lectures are boring but he takes attendance and its part of the grade so its best to go. Gives out a study guide before the midterm and final and you get to bring in a sheet of notes. Several papers as well and he can be a tough grader so put some effort into them. Overall, an ok teacher.
His lectures were more confusing than anything. His midterm and final are exactly what is on the study guide. He hands you the exam questions, and you get 1 cheat sheet. BORING beyond belief, and attendance is mandatory. However, his assignments (3 papers), midterm, final and attendance are the class grade, and compared to others, it's easy.
Be prepared to watch a lot of movies that are really boring. His lectures aren't very clear at times, and he assigns tons of reading. But he clearly enjoys the subject and encourages students to share his interest in it. Short quiz after every reading, so make sure to read and to show up for class. Three papers, one page of "cheat" notes for exams.
Boring class, but different angle on history to fit core. Multiple choice quiz every week on reading. Gives midterm/final questions out as study guide. Nice enough guy, and is enthusiastic about the subject.
AMAZING CLASS! this professor is AWESOME! he was in a rock group! if you don't think you can grasp concepts about race, gender, class (etc) then this class is not for you. TRUE HISTORY! attendence is necessary to understand the theme. quizzes and papers. very enlightening, FAVORITE CLASS EVER! very down to earth...
Joe Lapsely is an awesome teacher. He loves history, and he loves teaching it. One of the best teachers I have had thus far. I know ppl have differing opinions, but this class was anything but boring. Joe is a really down to earth guy, and he was the lead singer in a rock band. Very liberal, hippie-ish. Brilliant man. Not too fond of capitalism.
Excellent engaging professor. Helps students sift through much material to insightful concepts about the subject. Reveals topics as relevant and interesting. A MUST for non-history majors/history-phobic, class discussions actually intriguing and near fun.
Joe is a great teacher. The class is pretty easy consisting of 2 papers, 2 tests (he gives you the questions in advance, essays), and a 5pt multiple choice quiz over the book readings once a week. He knows his stuff and his down to earth. You also get to watch movies once a week, usually on Fridays, which is nice!
Hes great! Very knowledgeable about history. really passionate about it too. short 5pt quizzes every monday over the chapter reading. two tests (essay form, but he gives you 4-6 questions for study guide and test is 2 or 3 of them) very engaging. overall, great class, great professor
Joe is an awesome professor! So interesting! He is a very helpful and nice guy. Gets mad if you don't do your work. Otherwise best prof. i had at loyola.
If you want to learn history really well, take this teacher!! He knows his material and more. He not only teaches from the book, but also life experiences. Class is mandatory but its worth it, quizzes every Monday, and 3-4 short essay exams. Highly recommend him for a history class.
If you are just taking this class for core and are a science major with a lot of other classes that you have to work hard in, then I don't recommend this class. I'ts a lot of reading, but he does let you write your essays for exams beforehand. It's definitely a different angle, but I didn't like how subjective and liberal everything was.
From a very realistic perspective, i hear he writes his own reviews on this site. one quiz everyday, decent amount of readings, grades difficulty, and watching documentaries. he keeps you 5 mins over class usually, which is annoying. however, he is fair if you work hard. I got an A-. textbook use very high.
great, take him! i hate history, and i have never learned more or been more interested. not the easiest grader, though, and he did yell at our class once because he thought no one read the book...
He's such a crazy goofball, you will laugh at him even if he's just writing on the board. He really wants you to do well and he's willing to help you in any way possible. There are always 5 question quizzes every monday, which are easy except i never did the readings. You watch a ton of movies and have to write three papers, but its not that bad.
For a 100 level course, this is ridiculous. He gives 5 point quizzes on long articles (15 -75 pages) once a week, which are suppose to be based on main ideas, that are actually his opinions. If you do poorly on quizzes, your grade drops significantly. He says very inappropriate things during class. Way to much work for a core.
Do not recommend this professor at all. His comments in lecture were often inappropriate,****, and ****...in a class that was ironically focused on race, class, and gender. For a core class, it was way too much reading and the weekly quizzes were very detailed and difficult. He is also a strict grader when it comes to essays.
Smart guy, funny to listen to. Must read and write a couple papers- if you show up to every class, you might absorb enough to do well without reading a lot.
The class is interesting, Lapsley is funny & sarcastic & made the class enjoyable but the midterm & final assignments were horrible. Had little over a week to write four 2-4 page papers and only 2 of them were chosen to be graded. The final was similar and due weeks after our 20 page papers were due. Hope he rethinks these papers for future classes
This was a really great class. The professor and readings were both interesting. You have 6 papers,a final, and some sort of history paper. I did a critical review instead of the longer research paper options. Also i'd recommend going to class but the discussion and lecture is so great i never missed a day.
He definitely knows what he is talking about. He's funny, and his lectures made me laugh a lot. Attendance is mandatory (there's a sign in sheet). Class is just papers and presentations. No exams. I highly recommend doing the assigned readings so you can participate in the class discussions and know what's going on. Take him.
Professor Lapsley is such a great history professor. He knows everything there is to know about American pluralism and is great at teaching it. I loved attending his class. He is funny and also caring. There are readings everyday (sometimes long) and a quiz once a week based on the reading. Two papers, midterm (paper), & final (paper)! Recommended
This guy is wicked smart. While I do enjoy going to class and letting him bestow his greatness upon me, the class is unstructured, rigorous, and extremely demanding. Weekly quizzes so detailed, even after reading material, I would fail. What we learn is amazing, take him if you are a serious student. Papers are difficult- try hard, you will get A
Funny and chill guy. Class was not difficult but you do need to get your concepts clear for papers. You will learn a lot. Very long readings but most are interesting. He is surprisingly liberal (looks really conservative with the country style goatee lol). He is pretty understanding and is not very picky about deadlines. I recommend!
There are no exams for this class, only two main essays, 3 essays for the midterm and more essays for the final. When he gives lectures, he just writes random words and squiggly lines on the board which can be hard to follow, otherwise hell just play a documentary. You read a lot for homework and have small quizzes on the reading materials.
Very nice
He's good at teaching and makes the class engaging with lots of jokes and stories, but there is way too much work for an introductory class. I had more papers in this class than in my actual writing intensive. Don't take him in conjunction with a WI. You'll never sleep. I enjoyed the class and the subject matter was interesting nonetheless.
Loved Professor Lapsley. Great history teacher. Only downside is the number of papers. A potential total of 10 papers- 2 term papers, 4 prompts for 2-3 page midterm and final which you are allowed to write ahead of time (he only picks two to grade) Very engaging & fun lectures. Reading heavy with 1 pop quiz a week but the quizzes don't matter much
If you take this class, prepare to READ and WRITE. very demanding. Lapsley himself is an amazing guy and DEFINITELY knows what he is talking about, but he definitely expects way too much. Two long essays and a midterm in final, which you can write beforehand; not as nice as it sounds, 4 prompts but only chooses 2 of the prompts randomly the due day
This was probably the best history class I've ever taken. Joe is an amazing professor who is VERY knowledgable and passionate about the subject. That being said, it was one of my most demanding classes. Get ready for lots of long dry reads and rough essays. Pop quizzes once a week, but he usually warns you ahead of time. Hard for an intro class.
Lapsley is a difficult teacher; gives pop quizzes, expects you to read everything, assigns difficult essays... However, i've learned very valuable things in his class that changed my personal perspective of the world. He is so knowledgable and makes class very entertaining. LOVED his class and all the hard work was worth it for me in the long run.
Dr. Lapsley is a fantastic professor! He provides you a fascinating, non traditional textbook perspective of the history of the American society and culture. He's a rlly nice guy, and he lectures bluntly and to the point which is so refreshing! Mainly Essays: 2 papers, 1 midterm, 1 final, a few MC pop quizzes and participation. Doable A! Must read!
Great teacher, one of my favorite professors at Loyola. He makes his lectures entertaining and is an overall fun guy. Cares about his students & their grades and is willing & ready to help people out when they need it. A pretty decent amount of reading, but that's to be expected from a history class.
The class is you will have two paper (5 pages) with a midterm paper and a final paper. Not particularly hard class.
Lapsley is a nice guy, but his class is pretty boring. For the midterm and final he gives you FOUR prompts and then randomly chooses two to grade, so you basically write four essays and he only picks two. His lectures are messy, and all over the place. He is not very good at posting things to Sakai so I found myself always emailing him confused.
He is a terrible teacher who lacks structure and consistency in his teaching, which is kinda needed in a history class. He talks about random topics and will switch from year to year and never writes any information out for the students. Also when talking about slavery and other topics related he will laugh to himself, as if he sees it as a joke!
Joe was a great professor and he is a genuine person. There are a lot of readings because it's history, but it's balanced out with assigned films. The amount of writing really isn't bad - 2 papers, a midterm, and a final.
Professor Lapsley is a cool guy. His class has horrible organization making it very difficult to put together an argument for his purposefully challenging essay questions. It reminded me very much of the work required for some 300 level courses. He created no documents to aid in learning and made no changes to the original syllabus when needed.
His lectures are super confusing and he isn't organized. The homework he gives is hard to stay on top of because he doesn't make it clear what is assigned and never stays in sync with the syllabus. You really need to understand the material on your own because his lectures bounce around a lot. A lot more work than it should've been, not horrible.
Joe is super nice and very funny. He is also very knowledgable about a variety of historical eras. However, he is not very organized and taking notes is really the only way to be aware of what's going on.
Professor Lapsley has been one of my favorite professors in my whole college career. He is extremely funny, if a little eccentric(in a good way). His class is going to be pretty confusing if you haven't studied American history already. He doesn't give the clearest instructions but also doesn't expect you to rewrite the Origin of Species. Great prof
Nice guy but extremely unorganized. He doesnt have any organization to his lectures and theyre very boring. He assigns over 4 page readings every night. Doesnt really respond to emails. I wish there was something redeemable but not really except he seems like a good guy
I enjoyed Professor Lapsley's class and learned a lot. His lectures are great and he's very responsive to students. I wouldn't take HIST103 as a summer class though. It's an incredible amount of material to get through during a 6-week summer course. Take HIST 103 with Professor Lapsley, just not in the abbreviated summer format.
Lots of readings and quizzes, funny and caring professor but sometimes his lectures get a bit tiring. I learned a lot of cool stuff from this class but I hate the way we had to do papers for the midterm and final. He would give four essay prompts in advance but would not tell you which two prompts you would be graded on until the day of.
One of the reasons I am a history major! His American Pluralism is a fantastic course that he teaches with passion. He will bring up topics you didn't even know you were interested in. Also a kind human being with plenty of experience outside academia, and probably the hardest working professor here.
Joe is decent professor. He doesnt give tests just papers. Expectations for the papers are pretty clear, but grading and feedback can often be unclear. The class is not very difficult, just get ready to write. There are a total of 4 papers - including final paper, which is not cumulative. Can be unorganized at times, but is definitely knowledge.
Extremely smart guy. The readings for the class are tricky to find and made me think I misheard what he told us to read in class. He teaches you to think and write like a historian. Essays are hard but he works with you and looks for ways to give you points rather than take them away. Amazing intro to history and reminded me why I love history.
Prof Lapsley is a great guy all around and always makes class entertaining. Lectures can get a bit off track/confusing at times, but the class is determined by many papers throughout the semester, so if you do the readings and write down everything important that he mentions in class (he'll sneakily throw out some answers) then you'll be good.
Joe is a great guy to take basic history with. He goes off topic a lot, but it's usually based around history. Assigns a lot of readings, but you can get away with skipping a few. He basically tells you what material you need to include in your essays. Grade is based off of 2 essays, 2 short midterm essays, and a final paper. Interesting class!
Very knowledgeable on history. Funny and flexible, you can tell he really cares about his students. Very funny in class, has a tendency to ramble a bit but besides that pretty okay.
You can tell he cares about his students. However not a good professor, he rambles for more than half the class, has no organization. Writing notes and following along his lectures are brutal and extremely difficult. I have no idea what he is saying, ever. Writes random dates on the board and goes on tangents for 20 mins. Would not recommend.
His class gets really hard to follow. He is, overall, a good guy but he definitely can get condescending when answering questions in class. His lectures are confusing as well because he writes random dates on the board, expecting each student to retain information that way. He has zero lecture slides. Definitely look into other professors.
Joe is a cool guy. He loves what he teaches and it very much shows. His lectures are all over the place and he doesn't post any info on sakai besides the readings, so you have to show up to get notes. The course is graded by 2 essays, a midterm, and a final, but they're all pretty easy to do without doing any reading. Not bad, not great either.
Very nice and funny guy, however, the lectures are tedious and sometimes hard to follow. He writes a lot of random dates on the board and talks about a lot of random events that happened in history which at times gets very confusing. If you're the type of person who needs to be in a very active class I wouldn't recommend this section.
Take this class. Literally, all you have to do is take notes on the lectures and that is all you need for his papers. It is super easy to do. Even though he has a lot of books on his syllabus, I didn't need a single one. He is super chill and understanding. Funny guy. He only assigns really easy papers. Paper for the midterm and final.
Easy class for tier 1 history. Professor Lapsley is a really funny guy and tries to make his lectures as entertaining as possible. Your grade is determined by papers only, so make sure to do well on them. Final exam and midterm were two take home essays. Lectures can be a little all over the place, but he explains everything if you ask.
Prof. Lapsley is a good pick if you're looking for a very easy history class! He only grades you with papers, but they're pretty simple if you have a clear argument supported by the evidence he tells you to use. He never has homework other than readings/videos, but I literally never did any of that and was fine. Sort of an oddball, but he's nice!
I learned a lot from this class. He clearly spends a lot of time choosing sources that you can understand, and you also get a real idea of what was going on back then. You have to write papers, but that is it so really you can read on your own time. He is super flexible with due dates but if you want it graded sooner turn it in by sakai date.
He was a very knowledgable professor, but very unorganized hard to follow lectures, and did not follow his syllabus at all. Not a lot of information about the grading criteria, and not great feedback either. He is a nice guy, but I would not take his class again.
Class lacked structure but if youre good at taking notes you will be fine. Hist 103 was so easy because of him and he only graded off of a few papers and no quizzes/exams which makes it impossible to get anything below a B. Take him.
I would never take this class again. he never answers his emails, so he is not accessible outside of the classroom. He gave us two 4 page essays, and then our midterm and final was two 3-4 page essay's. The essay prompts are very complicated. There are a lot of sources, but it is hard to cite them because he never provides the author or the book.
He's incredibly knowledgeable but very unorganized. Lectures were by years but I struggled to follow while taking notes. There's only 4 grades which are two 5 pages papers and midterm/finals were two 3-4 page papers. The prompts were tricky, but if you pay attention in class you should have enough info to tough it out. SO SO many readings.
I loved Professor Lapsley's class. I would describe it as American history but all the parts they don't teach you in high school. There is a lot of reading but it is relatively manageable. He is a funny professor and it is obvious that he likes being there to teach.
Dr. Lapsley is an overall really funny and nice guy. His lectures are a bit all over the place and I've had to go back several times and re-read/watch things to get an understanding of what he talked about in class. The syllabus also does not make sense as a lot of the dates are wrong. There are no slides so make sure to listen for key concepts.
Prof. Lapsley is all over the place with his lectures and teachings of the subject. I enjoyed the class material because of the fact it's "hidden American history" but other than that this prof is unorganized, boring, and hard to talk to. He is super smart and knows his stuff but this class was my least favorite I have ever taken at Loyola.
LOVE JOE. TAKE. His material is SO interesting. He is unorganized, has a course plan but does not follow it. Ask him what to read instead of reading along with the syllabus. only graded on 4 papers. Make sure you read bec you only use his readings for the papers. Learn to take notes well bec his lectures are crazy. Cares deeply about his students.
honestly it was a hard class to keep up with learning wise and if you don't write the paper exactly how he wants it he gives you a mid grade. great guy, definitely knows his material and gives you credit for what you write for essays but it's kind of an unorganized class and he didn't go by the syllabus
He's a good professor but the class wasn't organized. Didn't really follow the syllabus and lectures were all over the place. There are 2 papers for the midterm and the final, 2 separate papers during the semester. Total of 6 papers all semester. No graded hw but you have to read stuff before each class and lectures are based off the reading.
Professor Lapsley is honestly a nice guy but beware of HIS103. Your grade is determined by two 4-page essays and a midterm and final which are two 3-4 page essays. The evidence in these essays comes directly from his lectures where he rambles the entire class without notes or a PowerPoint. This is by far the worst class I have taken in college.
Very nice guy and passionate about his class. Be prepared for MANY readings for homework. 4 essays throughout semester; you will be fine if you complete readings, take notes, and pay attention in class. Course has large workload, but you will be fine if you put in time and effort. Overall, you will learn a lot in this class and it is worth it.
His class is relaxed, he just lectures about the readings you were supposed to do (i did not). He grades only based on essays, which can be 4-5 pages long. Not a lot to say about the class except from it being an essay heavy one, if you don't enjoy essays don't take this class. If you don't mind typing and don't like working too hard pick his class
Profeesor Lapsley is actually very nice. His class is very reading heavy, and we're mostly graded on papers based on those readings. Be careful to pay attention in lecture because he's very lecture heavy too, but there are worse gradind systems in other history classes.
Interesting lecture I enjoyed this class I though the professor was entertaining. There was a good about of reading for homework and you have a few big papers but other than that pretty easy just show up for your attendance grade.
He was very nice and super knowledgeable on history topics. He doesn't use slides, he just talks for the whole class while you take notes. Doesn't follow the syllabus directly, but readings are very important because that is what you will use for the essays. I would take him if you like reading and don't get bored easily.
I literally loved this guy. The class was lecture heavy and you do have to do a lot of reading, but he was so knowledgeable and understanding and I learned so much from him. Definitely take this class, even if you're hesitant about doing a lot of readings he was literally phenomenal and super kind and funny.
I never did any of the readings, just took notes on what he discussed about them, and looked back at the passages to find quotes for essays. Lectures were easy to follow, he literally summarized everything you need to know. Super chill dude. For papers, he would dedicate a day to tell you what pdfs to use and topics to discuss. Easy class.
Very lecture heavy, so be ready to sit and take notes. There were about six essays which weren't too difficult if you actually paid attention but he makes the prompts too broad so I was never sure if I truly had enough details. I'm not sure what would get you an A in class because he doesn't have a rubric. he's a little condescending ngl but funny
He's passionate about the subject, but sometimes this leads to rambling off subject. Instructions for papers are sometimes unclear, so it's hard to tell how much detail you need, the more you can add the better. You can get by if you pay attention to the lectures, take notes, and skim the readings after. Not bad, but not the best. Decent.
Very lecture heavy class, lots of readings and films are needed to review prior to lectures as well. However, he knows his stuff and while there are quite a few papers, he is a very reasonable grader. He really enjoys class participation - so be prepared to talk about the readings everyday. Again, he's a very knowledgeable person, so ask questions!
Does not provide any notes or powerpoints. Lectures at you the whole time and is very hard to follow. Discusses weird topics and relies on you to figure everything out. 2-3 readings or films assigned EACH CLASS so be prepared to read. You need to read most of the material in order to do well on the three essays we have. Worst professor I have had.
He doesn't go by the syllabus at all and his lectures are long and repetitive. He assigns 30+ page readings from random sections of books/pdf and maybe even a documentary every class.. The prompts for the papers are so obscure and you can only use in class material. This class made me hate learning about history. Wouldn't take again.
So many readings and they're all long and boring. He lectures the entire class and so take good notes because he doesn't go off a PowerPoint and class discussions are necessary for papers. The lectures are really boring and he's kind of condescending. I would not recommend him as a teacher, the class is doable, just extremely boring and tedious.
He's wonderful as a person, just not my style of teacher. He is unaccessible outside of class and has never answered a single email I've sent him. No lecture slides/visuals so pay attention. 2 papers 1 midterm 1 final only allowed to use information from readings and lectures. Only material on sakai is readings that he doesn't add much info for.
this guy, for the midterm and final, assigned 2!!! 3-4 PAGE ESSAYS DUE AT THE SAME TIME with like only a week and a half to write them. And he laughs at you when you answer a question wrong in class. God forbid you aren't an expert in History. if you do not like writing papers about obscure prompts in history (no outside resources) DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Needs a reality check. So much work for a tier 1 gen ed. Total of 6 papers. Crazy bc it's not a writing-intensive. (2 were 4-5pgs double-spaced, 4 were 3-4 pgs double-spaced). That is ALL you are graded on, and they are -/100 each. Will call you out if you aren't paying attention. Multiple long readings and films are due every class. SAVE URSELF!!
Class was very lecture heavy, he almost never stopped talking. Barely discusses the 2-4 readings he gives you every night, and essays don't line up with what you are actively learning in class and no class time is given to work on said essays. He is also not very good at responding to emails, asked for an extension and he replied a month later.
just rambles on and on every lecture and doesnt have any kinds of presentations, just random chickensscratch on the board. only grades we get are papers, and he grades them harshly. attendance is mandatory but you get like 3 skips i think. overall not a very good prof expects you to already know all of everything he teaches before coming to class
no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Don't take him
Nice guy, definitely knows what he's talking about but really unorganized class with no sense of structure except for verbal lecture. Syllabus becomes inaccurate as lots of things get moved around. Only graded on 6 papers. Prompts for papers are really specific and it can be hard to know what he's expecting.
The class itself is informative but very boring. There are no assignments, only papers. Be sure to pay attention in class and read the material. Six papers, two for the midterm and the final, are due on the same day. He is very picky with the papers, and there is no rubric!! Attendance does matter a lot!
Best professor I have ever had don't believe the bad ratings. So kind and is very lenient with your papers. Make sure you pay attention in class though. He is very chill fr fr. Plz take his class.
Genuinely an amazing person and teacher. If you want an easy but informative class take this one.
Professor Lapsley does not give a clear rubric or tell students exactly what he wants. Even if you follow the guidelines he provides, you can still lose points because he never explains what he expects on the essays.
So many readings. Lectures usually turn into rants. No midterm or final, just 4 papers. Harsh grader. No exams. I like him because I'm a history major, but if you aren't, you're going to have a hard time. He can be funny sometimes, but a little insensitive. Don't take if you want an easy A.
Professor Lapsley is a great professor. He is very nice and welcomes class discussions, the course was made up of 2 analysis papers, a midterm paper and a final paper. A lot of the course is just showing up to class for participation points. He grades a little harshly but will review your paper before the due date and tell you what to fix. Took 212
