Extremely smart and sarcastic, which makes for very entertaining classes. He loves chemistry so if you are a chemistry major take him and bring up the subject of chemistry lots.
Really good teacher. Very intelligent and passionate about phy's. * Loves rock climbing, (wear I love rock climbing shirt or something) couldn't hurt :0)
Great Teacher. You lucked out if you get this guy. He is brilliant and really enjoys his work. His comedy, well he is working on it.
Joe is probably the best prof I have ever taken. He is engaged in class, always has very cool physics experiments and is very thorough. Reading assignments and homework is sometimes a lot but physics is a pretty heavy subject. Highly recommend. Highly.
Took his astronomy class. Awesome teacher. Although I hated waking up on Saturdays to go to class, it was always fun and interesting once I got there. Try to get him if you can. Easy grader!
He's awesome! Def. knows what he's talking about and always willing to answer questions. He makes a difficult, boring subject fun with his great stories and sarcastic sense of humor. Very cool, not a tough grader & generally understanding with assignments. He was late sometimes, but he'd let us out early in exchange. I had lots of fun in his class!
Prof. Lowry is one of the best professors I've had. I didn't know anything about physics before his class but after taking it, I want to take more classes. Lab scores are very important, make sure they are thorough and you'll get 20 out of 20.
Took him for Concepts in Physics and Foundations of Natural Life science. He is awesome, and you will learn a lot especially if you are not a sciency-mathy person really, but still interested. Funny and not too difficult if you show up and do all your work. Also cute for an old dude. JUST SAYING.
He's extrememly nice and really funny. His quizes have some tricks in them, but he lets you use cheat sheets. He doesn't "grade" the homework, he just makes sure you did it, so always put in an answer, even if it's wrong, and he'll almost always give you credit. The only 'bad' thing about him is that sometimes he's hard to track down.
Easy going, Interesting ,.....
one of the best professors I've had.very easy grading, and easily pass....if you only do whatever he taught in class, you can easily pass the class. he will give extra credits also, that will be very helpful for final exam.
Physics is hard, not the professor. This class is set up great, could not be a better professor. Really enjoyed his class. Very smart guy.
Best Teacher i Have ever Had. Dont Hesitate to take him. I hate physics, But came to every class just to be in his class.
What can I say...I loved loved loved his class (and I hate Physics) He makes this class not only fun but entertaiing. He is very sympathetic to students and is always available. Tests are open book and as a result there is not much memorizing - He loves Physics and it shows. As for us ladies...He is very good on the eyes.
They could not have found a better guy for an intro to Physics class. He really does promote and develop interest in a field that scares many.He is a very skilled Educator and totally invested in his students education. In short this guy rocks!
I absolutely loved this professor. He was very helpful, very knowledgable and entertaining. He explained things very well and I learned a lot :) show up everyday, take notes and do your homework and you will get an A. Homework is word for word from the book and a TON of writing, the only downside :/ very fun and easy class
He's a great lecturer. Very engaging and pretty funny. What I did not like about this class: Lots of group work for lab & project physics. I don't mind group work but when you get grouped up with strangers it's risky. Try to choose your group wisely. I had some dead weight in my group and they were never penalized despite doing almost no work.
He's very entertaining and does his best to make physics interesting and fun. The only problem was his quizzes. They always had a critical thinking question, where the question is either something we've never solved for, or is set up in an unfamiliar way. While frustrating, as long as you get a C on them, you'll pass the class with an A.
Class is setup with lots of group work which is hard to pull off in a subject like Physics and this one fails as well. Nearly no homework to actually get good at working problems, just the required group projects. Quizes and Final are difficult with questions not covered in either lecture or the optional homework.
Wonderful teacher but make use of the TA... the subject can be difficult to grasp and the more time put in, the better the grade.
2500 is just like 2400 with a lot of group work and is a horrible way to teach physics. Not enough homework to get good with the subject matter, spent most of the time carrying the group on 2 projects which are 35% of the final grade. Tests questions at levels we never practice, only watch him solve, if you bomb the final your grade drops 1 letter
fun class, ok quizzes
Prof Lowry is a great professor. He's a little kooky, but his humor is appreciated in a class that can sometimes be hard to understand. Definitely preferred going to him over our SI and he was always available for extra help. There's one big group project and 5 quizzes you can use your hw notebook on. HW is collected for points. No book needed.
Fantastic teacher. Wish more teachers were like him. Very enthusiastic. Very clear. Keeps things interesting even if physics is boring to you. Definitely the teacher to take.
Lowry was a great professor for Physics 1 & 2. He explained the material fairly well and he was always willing to go over the subject learned that day. If you keep up with the homework and use the SI (if available) then this class will be very easy to get a good grade in. No text book was needed to pass this class.
His lectures are amazing, definitely need to show up to class to be able to get it. His lectures are entertaining and don't feel that long but expect to have some homework and a paper. But over all the course is pretty easy.
Teacher has very dry humor, which i did not find amusing. Will lecture until the very last second of class and sometimes forgets to have breaks for class. The labs have nothing to do with what is taught in class. Quiz's are 70 points and are questions that have never been talked about.
Very good lecturer. He has a passion for the subject material and uses a lot of demonstrations to keep class interesting. Read test questions carefully, he expects a precise answer. The only negative attribute I noticed was that he often starts class 10-15 minutes late.
He makes things complicated while they are not, tutors helped much more
Good lectures, very well though out. HW is a must because I was able to use it on quizzes. Prepare for a good size final and a big group project.
Class lectures and demos are clear and pertain to subject matter. He makes learning physics fun and is an easy going professor if you have any questions about subject matter. If you do what's expected and attend the SI sessions, there's no way you can fail this class.
He is a great instructor, but it's not an easy A. Straightforward grading including hw, quizzes, final, lab, and group project. He gives some EC and drops some grades. Get in a lab group with competent people or you will regret it all semester. The labs often run late and the project was not fun or easy. Go to every class and SI session.
He really cares about his students learning the material, rather than just regurgitating definitions. The class drags on at times, but he tries to keep it interesting. I recommend taking him, and i will definitely take more classes with him.
Lots of time consuming critical thinking questions. Excessive amount of projects, most in groups. Was usually 10-15 minutes late for class. SI was more helpful with questions than he was as he was very hard to find. Offers some extra credit if you want to spend 3-4 hours on it for minimal points. Long drawn out lectures w bad jokes. Pointless labs.
Hands down, best professor I've ever had. Passionate, hilarious, excellent at teaching, there is not enough good things to say about this guy. My only gripe is that he doesn't use the online resources a lot but this is hardly enough for me to say he is even a subpar teacher. Highly, highly, highly recommend if you need physics.
For Lowry's class, show up to class, take notes, and do the homework. You'll be glad you did.
Very fair goes over materials if you miss class but you need to ask him made projects fun Definitely take good notes
Lowry is an excellent choice for physics. The course material is difficult and the concepts are complicated but Joe takes time to dissect problems, presenting clear analysis of the content. Tests are difficult but can be compensated by good grades in lab reports. Take time, do the labs right - accessible outside of class, which is great!
Took two classes with him 3 my 2nd favorite prof at this place. No textbook needed Lets you use a formula sheet for the final Lets you use homework for quizzes Sense of humor Makes you want to learn Creates good class and lab atmosphere Very fair grader with good feedback Very knowledgeable Helpful and cares about students Available for extra help
Great teacher, funny guy. Best advice is to write down everything he puts on the board. If you miss a class, partner up with someone so you can copy their notes; you'll need them, as certain exams may be open note. Offers plenty of extra credit, but will not always remind you when assignments are due, so pay close attention to your syllabus.
Had Lowry for the lab portion. He was good but did not see him much. He would explain the lab we had to do, and then he would flee and go MIA. He does have a great sense of humor. Pretty relaxing guy, wants you to learn.
A very kind and funny man, he makes 3 hour lectures entertaining and interesting with his clever sense of humor. Lots and lots of extra credit plus a take-home final exam to boot. Labs are easy as heck and he typically won't hold class for the entire duration. Wasn't interested in Astronomy before I took him but he makes it a fun Gen Ed. class.
Mr. Lowrey is a good teacher, I have taken his astronomy class before. One thing about him, his classes are tough, his projects are tough, in general, he assigns tough assignments. Be prepared to work hard, I don't personally think an astronomy class should have been as hard as his was.
Im conflicted with this guy. Hes an extremely picky grader and I think he makes things a lot more difficult than they need to be. You can also barely find him outside of class. His lectures are pretty interesting and when you get a good grade you feel really proud. id take him if you want a challenge, not if your taking a bunch of classes.
Had Lowry for Astronomy and he is a pretty fantastic and funny professor, though he is EXTREMELY picky when it comes to answers on tests and exams. My advice is to copy down what he writes on the board word-for-word, don't leave any details out. Doing so on tests will make you lose tons of points, even for the smallest mistakes.
GREAT PROFESSOR, GREAT CLASS
Prof Lowry is fantastic. He is very straightforward, and his lectures cover everything you need for quizzes/final exam. Show up to every lecture and finish your homework on time. I spent a lot of time reviewing for this class and went to the SI. Find a good lab group bc labs r long and you do a final project worth a lot of pts with them.
he tried hard to make the class interesting and hes pretty funny at times. Lots of group work, his grading is a little inconsistent.. not sure Id take him again
horrible. I have never been so stressed from a class. 60-75% of our grade was group work. Never knew where my grade stood. Was no help at all. Picky grader, would not give clear grading criteria. homework was hard and did not help at all. most people got 15-35 out of 50 on quizzes, if you were in the 30 range that was actually good. worst teacher
Make sure to attend all lectures and lab. If you have any questions he will take as long as it needs for you to understand the answer. His quizzes are hard, and so is the final. But it is not impossible to get an A. If you have a bad lab group you will also struggle in the class.
I LOVED Prof. Lowry. I had him for both 1610 and 1620 and I must say I learned a lot, and I wish he was teaching more classes. Grading is very straight-forward, Come to labs, study lectures for quizzes and keep up with the homework and you'll be in good shape. Make sure you choose your group wisely, lots of points for group labs/project.
A fine teacher, I had him in the summer for an astronomy class (he normally teaches physics). The class had a project (mostly group but some individual) due almost every week (the class meet twice a week) and the grading scale was significantly harder than expected. Very lecture heavy with some "dad jokes" but not a horrible teacher.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. His reviews may seem decent, but the administration cut out lecture time. Furthermore the professor made the class excessively difficult and took away points for the oddest things. 50% of the grade is evaluated in the last two class periods. Extra credit is minimal compared to the amount of effort required to attain it.
Really great person, goofy, and passionate about what he teachers. I do look forward to taking him for 1620 but he grades things extremely hard and he's very picky. If you do an answer 100% correctly but not the way its "ADIC" he will mark you down tremendously. Quizzes are very hard, along with the final. Pick a good lab group, will come in handy.
Lowry is a great professor. He will make sure you learn concepts instead of memorizing answers. He does not hand out "A's", especially since this is a heavy group work class. Plan on using the recommended textbook outside of class to succeed. He can be a hard grader, however, he's preparing you for higher classes. It only gets harder from here!
Great lecturer! Do your homework, ask questions and you will be fine. Course is heavy on group projects so pick a good group and you will do well. My favorite lecturer in OCC by far!
Great professor!!! Very organized, let you use your homework on quizzes, Friendly, funny, his lectures are very interesting!!!
So I'm not great at physics, and I took professor Lowry for 8 weeks in the spring of 2019. He's very clear about what he wants on exams. Copy every single thing he puts on the board, do every homework problem he assigns, and GO TO THE TUTORS FOR HOMEWORK HELP. Samer and Jay are the best. Go to their tutor hours!
Lectures can be confusing, but this is physics. Go to office hours, hes always happy to answer questions. Prepare to stay well passed the ending time of class. Labs and problem solving sessions always run over time. Be in a good group, much of your grade is dependent on group projects.
Professor Lowry is a nice guy, some people don't appreciate his anecdotes throughout lecture but I found it to be a nice little break from the material. He lets you use homework notebooks on "quizzes" which are effectively test grades as well as a formula sheet on the final exam. As long as you do your homework there's really nothing to worry about
Lowry is great in a classroom setting. And if you go to tutoring, you're pretty much going to pass with an A. However, after the COVID situation and having to go virtual, that changed quick. No one knows what to do and he doesnt respond to emails, nor is tutoring online any help since he wants everything ADIC. Don't take online classes with him!
DO NOT TAKE PHYSICS WITH PROF. LOWRY, especially if it is online. He is terribly behind in grading and he just rudely scribbles on your homework and does not give any good feedback. He is extremely disorganized and makes you do things his way, even draw a picture. Nothing is clear. Ridiculous professor overall especially for a community college.
DON'T TAKE AN ONLINE CLASS WITH HIM! he is always behind in grading. he also forces people to use his way. if you get the answer right but not as described in his video, he will give you 1 or 2 points. we were totally lost in labs. we didn't know what we need to do. he also doesn't really reply to emails. he is terrible online
Had to take his class online because of corona. SOOOO disorganized and rude af when you email him for anything at all. Spent 25 hours a week on his class. 0/10 do not recommend.
Whatever you do... dont take this professor. Especially with everything going on during Covid, he doesnt have any sympathy for students and the way he teaches is so hard to follow now that its online. His lecture videos dont make any sense and hes so nit picky while grading assignments. I wouldnt recommend this professor to anyone.
He is terrible dealing with COVID. His online class is not it at all. He grades harshly and gives no feedback as to what you did wrong, during zoom meetings he only answers questions vaguely & does not explain things in entirety. He over elaborates on topics that do not have anything to do with Physics. RUNNNNNN!!!!!!!! 25/35 students dropped
I am currently taking his class and I wish I would have found rate my professor sooner. You can sit through an hour-long lecture and still have no idea how to do the hw. The Hw problems are completely different from the ones he uses in his lecture videos. He is very strict about the way he wants the problems set up.
I had a lab with this class and was scheduled on Mondays and Wednesdays to meet, but he only had Wednesday zoom calls. He was pretty good at explaining such a difficult subject and was open to help anyone if they got lost. My lab partners sometimes did not understand the material all too well, but I think that's because physics can get difficult.
Professor Lowry is a terrible online professor. He assigns 1-2+ hour lecture videos to watch every week, which have no correlation to homework problems. During the weekly zoom meetings all he does is complain about how many emails he gets and tells us how wrong our work is, and he grades by using illegible abbreviations. I could go on... Don't take
The professor knocks off dumb points and doesn't hold himself to the same standards as he holds his students. He was 30 minutes late to class and took off attendance points if you didn't want to waste your time waiting for him to show up. Zero tolerance for late work, but has no problem taking weeks to grade and answer emails, if he answers at all.
He is VERY meticulous, he will take points off for the dumbest things. Labs were stupid/boring, but he was an ok instructor. Homework wasn't bad, but he takes off points if you don't do it HIS way. Pay very close attention to detail because he will find something to mark you down for. I love physics but he made it really tedious. Not the worst tho
I had Prof Lowry for summer physics 1 and 2 last year so the class was online during covid. No exams but plenty of worksheets. Yes, it was a lot of work (especially being an accelerated course) but if you balance your time and figure out a schedule to get homework and labs done you will be fine. He was a really nice guy and explained things well.
Such a terrible professor. He is so picky and will mark off points even when you get the correct answer but do the problem differently than he would. He is not understanding at all, and I would not recommend him to anyone. He expects so much from his students but he won't put in the work on his side. Please do not take him.
Took him for SU1 while juggling work & 2 other summer courses but didn't care. Either never answers email or responds very late. Classes were T/TH but made HW due Sa/Mon. Calculated my points wrong so I didn't get the grade I should have got. Took off participation points since I wasn't in Zoom 2/3 of 1st class even when I left bc of an emergency
If you want to earn credit for the work you are doing , he is the professor to take class. If you spent quality time in studies and homework you will get the grade you deserve - No short cuts allowed. No text books needed . If you hear his lectures and write down the notes you will get half the credit there itself .follow what he says, grade follows
His lectures are long but he finds ways to make them interesting. PICK A GOOD LAB GROUP THOUGH! The people that you choose to be in your lab group will determine your grade.
I thought he was a pretty great professor. The lectures were super interesting because he makes use of real life demos, he's got a funny sense of humor, and he's a pretty reasonable guy overall. He is a very meticulous grader though, and group work makes up a big portion of your grade, so pick a good group!!
Harsh grader (grades mistakes in work too), not clear grading criteria, no personal feedback but provides a solution sheet for each test, homework was not useful, everything taught in lecture is fair game for tests, some poorly worded problems on tests. Great lecturer, great notes, personable, fun labs, enjoyed the class; hated the group projects.
This physics class is what made me give up a STEM major. It is extremely difficult and Professor Lowry doesn't make it any easier. He is very passionate and very nice, but the lectures are very all over the place and I found that they did not prepare me for the tests. Be prepared to work really hard if you take him.
difficult to prepare for the quizzes, most of the questions aren't in the homework so the cheat sheet he allows is almost useless, in my opinion. Good thing he offered extra credit and is dropped our lowest quiz.
Since it is a physics class, its not meant to be a cake walk. Given that, he sets gives you everything you need to do well. All material is taught in class and spoken verbally, so no outside reading. Your notes are a valuable tool, so take good notes. Make sure you study before quizzes, and if there is SI, utilize it, it helps so much!
he literally sucks do not take his class he refuses to help anyone
The lectures for almost the entire semester were not related to the class and then spontaneously he crammed it in during the last few weeks. The labs are group projects and relatively very easy. No homework. Tests allowed notes and were EXTREMELY easy if you write down what he does on the board. Lectures are mind-numbing; overall average prof 7/10
Prof Lowry is just amazing. He makes the classes to fly by and always tries to create good examples so everybody can understand the lecture. Of course you are going to have to study and do plenty of quizzes but the way he teaches changes the game
Although the assignments and projects themselves aren't terrible, the lectures consist of random stories and often go off topic. It is not easy to get in contact with this professor outside of the classroom and he doesn't put grades in until the end of the semester, so to know what you have, you would have to calculate it yourself. Do not recommend
Very fair grader and understanding of students. he wants students to succeed and understand and it shows but you need to show you are putting in the effort. Physics is not meant to be easy but the lectures were highly enjoyable and comprehensive. careful choosing lab partners because they can impact your experience. be prepared to study a lot
I actually enjoyed his lectures. They seemed somewhat random at first, but they quickly became relevant to what the course material was teaching. Fun to talk with, and pretty laid back on the grading. Make sure you make friends and form a group! You'll do many hands on projects for him, and make sure you know the due dates and are never late!
I thought Mr. Lowry was a terrific teacher. He always kept his lectures very entertaining by telling stories and using demonstrations to explain the physics concepts learned.
I absolutely loved this professor. I've never taken physics before and I had no interest whatsoever, but he made it interesting. Have to mention he is so funny, he makes jokes during lectures all the time. Make sure you communicate with him, he is really understanding and super nice. Loved taking his class
Easily one of my favorite professors I've ever had. Loved his lectures and demonstrations he did during class. Take good notes, review examples and group written problem assignments to succeed. Forgiving on graded personal work with lots of partial credit for attempting problems including the final, he allowed a double sided notesheet. Thanks Joe!
10/10 Would Recommend.
Lowry was very fun to listen to. His lectures were interactive, and he really dove into our physics subjects. His quizzes were based on lecture problems as well as homework problems. I took this as a summer class, and even though it moved quickly, it was a great experience!
Homework is optional, but you can use your homework as notes during quizzes. There are 2 group projects that are a large portion of the final grade (fairly easy). Prof. Lowry's lectures were engaging and entertaining, there were a lot of physical demonstrations which really helped with visualizing the content. Overall, I really enjoyed this class.
These ratings dont listen to them i prayed for my car not to start sure i got a good grade but thats with extra credit. This guy teachers the class like its his first time, ontop of which if you have any questions about anything such as the projects good luck all you're getting is "Hmm idk" "shoulda payed attention
Lectures were long and uninformative. He tends to waste class time talking about unnecessary topics. Way to focused on group work not enough individual assignments. The homework provided is useless. Barely uses D2L so if you can't make it to class you risk missing important information. I would recommend avoiding if you want to keep your sanity.
Very group heavy, which basically means you are dependent on other students to do their part so you don't fail. Lectures are confusing and many things are not explained. No tutor available.
lol. this guy is a joke. says you can use homework on exams but NOTHING CORRELATES. the final exam had questions that we hadn't seen since the beginning of the semester (talked about literally once btw). lectures are presented in an overly difficult manner for NO reason. 10/10 would NOT recommend. wish i'd listened to the bad reviews i read.
