Pretty chill, dry lectures but doable class. Just take good notes.
He was late to class on multiple occasions, almost never posted supplemental materials on time, and copied straight from the textbook as "notes" . On top of all that, I consistently felt blindsided outside of class by assignments dropped on us out of the blue. To top it off , he assigned 3 projects for the last week of classes.
To start Joe Manning is not a bad guy I'm sure if I knew him as a friend ad not a professor I wouldn't have the passionate hatred I do for him. But unfortunately I did have him as a professor...... to put it simply his lectures are mind numbingly boring I would rather staple my tongue to the bulletin board in EB3 then sit through his class again
Here we go with part two because 350 characters is not enough Joe Manning was often late to class very unorganized and would send random emails that would blindside you about new assignments. Often I would open my email and see an email from him I would then immediately look for the nearest solid object to slam my head into and then start working
He's a decent person and a chill professor, but it's moderately difficult to learn from his slow paced teaching style. He does not answer his email. He changes assignment, test, and homework dates fairly regularly and with short notice (luckily he moves the dates back, not forward). He is not organized, and grades very slowly.
Dr. Manning is a very fair professor who tried his best for his first attempt at teaching. It's a learning experience for him just as much as the student's but he has all the means to make a good professor with time. He gives you the tools to make do and some research on your own will solidify the material. Just show up and try and you'll pass.
Joe is chill but the lectures are very very boring. He does give out a lot of extensions and multiple opportunities for extra credit. He always dresses like he's going to an Easter service at church.
Joe's lectures were very slow and disorganized. He isn't great at responding to emails. He is a chill dude to chat with during office hours. This was his first time teaching MAE-251. His prior teaching experience is much more hands on and abstract and this is very clear. He is probably a great "lab professor", but this class is not lab-like.
Overall not as bad as most people say. The course was slower which led to long lectures where he wrote directly from the textbook. He is unorganized but It was his first semester teaching, we consistently had assignments pushed back and the test dates were not finalized in the syllabus until 2 weeks before the tests.
Really good for a first semester teaching the course imo. Lectures did feel long most of the time but the notes were very in-depth with many diagrams. Professor was also accessible at many times and happy to help outside of class time. Especially after 1 or 2 more semesters, I think his classes and the structure will be more organized.
If Dr. Manning ran senior design he would at least check the weather before asking students to fly their planes
Overall good prof. Does a lot of examples in class which is helpful, homeworks aren't bad but tests were sometimes difficult. Very accessible outside of class and helpful in office hours.
Not a harsh teacher, just that Dynamics has a lot of content which makes it difficult to study for exams. Also having only 4 hw assignments isn't much, would have preferred shorter but more hw assignments.
Had him for 495 AUAV Boot Camp. Great guy, was willing to work around scheduling conflicts, and was pretty chill when it came to grading. Fun class also and would definitely recommend taking if you haven't seen the Sun for a couple semesters.
Do not take this guy he is inconsistent and I would prefer having a teacher that doesn't make jokes about dead babies. It's not funny.
Did not teach some things and then tested multiple questions on said subjects. Most homeworks involve looking up formulas or what variables mean because they are not outlined in class. Very disorganized. Only seems excited to be in the class when it's the day of an exam. Don't take aerospace vehicle performance with him.
I do not feel like Dr Manning should continue as a lecturer. I think he would be better adjusted elsewhere where he is not instructing people. Maybe he would be better only working with machines. I mean that in the kindest way possible. Thank you.
Would not take another course with this professor.
Disorganized and refused to communicate.
This is to balance out my previous review. There are some things that I disagree with with his teaching processes and such, but you really just have to apply yourself. Good professor, good sense of humor.
Not worth my money.
Would not take again.
Does not answer emails and not great at communicating.
Not as bad as the recent reviews suggest. Yes, he isn't the best at communicating and the homeworks/projects are sometimes confusing but if you talk to him in person or go to his office hours he can answer questions. Know conversions for the tests! He graded the first test out of 110 points and the second out of 105 for a grade boost.
He is an understanding guy, generous with grading and moves deadlines back. He comes in late occasionally, did not give clear guidelines on the final project, and often has basic grammatical errors. His lectures are straightforward and the example problems are relevant to tests. Wouldn't avoid, but wouldn't go out of my way to take him again.
Manning is a reasonable professor, sometimes the class feels rushed but dynamics has a lot of material to cover, so its understandable. Super lenient with grading, especially on tests, giving partial credit to those that at least made an effort, drawing FBDs, axes, etc. Homework's aren't too bad along with the two midterms, the final was difficult.
Just…no.
Would not recommend.
Suggest taking this class with literally any other professor available.
Homework involved outside research which was taxing as the information was unavailable in class. He was very disorganized. He was often late to class. Would expect that from students but not the professor. DO NOT take aerospace vehicle performance with him!!
He comes in late to class! Non-communicative. I learned from the framework of the course but I had to seek other sources out to truly grok the material.
I did not feel respected.
I would not say there was an apt ability to communicate anything clearly by the professor which is my main hang up. He the ability to effectively communicate complex concepts related to the subject matter that we were tested on, he is poorly organized, doesn't engage students, fails to provide clear feedback, and is unresponsive to questions.
Even in the very first classes, you can tell if the professor presents the material in an interesting way. Be especially alert for professors who stand up there and read large sections of the lecture from their notes. If it's a snoozer in Week 1, it's going to get excruciating by Week 15.
A few pet peeves of mine with this professor. Gave unclear explanations, was extremely unorganized, showed up late to class, prioritized reading notes out loud over teaching ie made us sit there and listen to him read notes himself instead of explaining concepts; we could have done this on our own, lacked accessibility outside of class.
He is not a bad guy outside of teaching. Maybe would be a friends to go have a beer with but as far as having him as a teach, I would say probably not the best.
Get ready to put in the hours to be self-taught as needed to present new or special MAE subject matter. Was not was I was expecting.
Would advise taking a different professor for this course.
Prof read notes out loud that was about it all semester lol. We could have done that ourselves at home.
Not challenging enough as I learned mostly on my own outside of class.
Is this guy serious? Professors like him are why people don't take NC State seriously like they take UNC and Duke seriously.
Made confusing concepts more confusing. Not accessible outside of class. Felt like I ended up teaching myself.
Felt like I taught myself, as others have stated. Seems like a good guy just overall unavailable.
Unavailable to answer questions I felt like I had to teach myself.
Don't take this class with Manning. Consider yourself warned lol.
No thanks taught myself everything I needed to know
I'm not sure why there are so many negative ratings about Dr. Manning, I thought he was great. If you can do the homeworks, you are guaranteed to do well on the tests. He's very generous with partial credit and great in office hours. He can sometimes get side-tracked during lectures but did lots of example problems. I recommend him for dynamics!
Couldn't seem to answer questions in a manner that helped us move beyond our core understanding of the topic. Unavailable outside of class. Doesn't answer emails and showed up late multiple times. Some of his lectures were Word for Word copied from other sources ie repetitive. Would not suggest taking this professor.
If you can do the homework by teaching yourself everything you need to know, you are guaranteed to do well on the tests.
Confusing with grading and moving deadlines. He comes in late occasionally, and not give clear guidelines on the final project, and often has basic grammatical errors. Wouldn't go out of my way to take him again.
This is the worst professor. He is constantly late to class; his policies do not follow NC State guidelines.
Leaving this review because I'm wondering if anybody else was offered extra credit in exchange for leaving positive review on professor? I don't think that's fair and I would imagine that goes against NC State policy.
Would not take again
Just my opinion but I would not take this processor again. The issue isn't the complexity of the concepts or the workload, but the monotone delivery and the missing explanations of why we're learning each topic. The professors seem to be devoid of the spark that made you pursue engineering.
I started studying Engineering in 2019 (I already work as a translator for engineering companies, so I was attracted to this field). If I had to describe his lessons in one word: PAINFUL!
Objectively terrible professor, you know the type I am talking about. All students in his classes have nothing nice/only terrible things to say about his teaching ability (among other things), all bad reviews on RMP, and presumably bad reviews on his official end-of-semester evaluations from students.
Overall less than average. I feel like I should remove more than average for a teacher for what a pay in tuition.
Would rather not talk about it,
Offering your students “extra” extra credit in exchange for positive reviews on RMP is not only dishonest but vile. I hope NC State realizes who they have put in charge of setting an example for their students in the engineering department!
HE IS A SLOW GRADER. The moment of writing this we still have not gotten test 2 back which took almost 2 weeks ago. Also he makes simple dynamics concepts difficult to understand. He derives equations all class just to slap an example problem in front of you and tasks you with solving it. His tests are also quite difficult. Take someone else.
Dr. Manning really taught me the meaning of dynamics. I think of the world in a different way because of him. He really opened my eyes to the world of being dynamic. I think I might take the class again. F=ma forever
This professor is terrible. He doesn't answer emails and made multiple grading errors which lead to confusion on what your final grade was. Also he graded the final projects and didn't tell us why we got that grade. Also it took him 2.5 weeks to grade a test. Do not take.
Unclear and untimely communication. Made multiple grading errors. Still not sure what my grade was!
Avoid at all costs.
Terrible professor. Please do better, NC State!!!
Joe Manning is an ok professor teaching-wise, but he is awful at grading and communicating. He gave us back our first test grade after the drop date, waited until the end of the semester to curve tests, which he said he would do months before, and took several weeks to grade each test. Do not take if you can avoid it. He does not return emails.
STILL NO GRADE. Unreal!
Slowwwwww grader! Doesn't respond to emails at all. STEER CLEAR.
Awful. Felt like the weight of taking an extra class actually just getting through to the guy about communicating on the grading of the tests
AUAV is a really fun informal class. It can get expensive, so be warned. You can anticipate spending at least 300 dollars if you do not work in a group, or find ways to find secondhand equipment. Dr. Manning makes himself available to help, and is very clearly invested in the success of his students. I highly recommend both MAE495 and Dr. Manning
Would not take again. Take someone else if it's possible.
Without going into it it was just a stressful situation with the lack of commutation. I asked several questions I never received an answer to and it stressed me out even more! Take another professor if you can.
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS. If you seek pleasure in brain-rotting boredom and confusion, follow along with what is taught in the classes. If you're smart study more than the practice quiz, skip his classes.
He goes on and on about how it's his first semester teaching. I think everybody's really sick of the “victim narrative”. It's my first semester as a student, so does that count? Take another professor if you have the option.
Would rather kms than take this class again. Cannot say a single good thing about this professor; this class made me want to drop out.
Nooooooo No No Noooooooooooooo!!!!!!!
Throughout this course, expectations are unclear. There is little to no information on moodle, the final project rubric is incredibly vague, and the lectures have a strange layout. While Dr. Manning is a slow grader, he is very good at finding partial credit. If you understand the homework's you will do well in the class.
Made me want to drop out of engineering program. Not good. Sad.
I didn't feel respected and a teacher ought to offer mutual respect to their students.
Would not take this professor again
Bad at communicating and explaining simple concepts. I taught myself honestly.
No feedback, hard to reach
Professor simply reads notes from the textbook every class. So maybe that's why attendance is not mandatory. Anyway, would not reply to emails. And was a really slow grader. I would recommend taking somebody else. Thank you.
Would not take again
He is the worst at communicating. Finished things late which he said he would do months before. Showed up LATE to class often!! Will not return emails. Avoid if you can help it.
Does not connect with students. Late to class, disorganized, made simple concepts confusing and honestly it's not worth the stress. Wouldn't retake or recommend.
Unclear from day 1 on what the grading rubrics were as well as the expectations of the class. Never replied to ANY of my emails. Wasn't available outside of class either to help. If I had the option, I would have taken another professor. NC State, please offer us another option. My brother has to take this class as well.
I can't vibe with this guy at all. Dropped class.
Is he really a teacher? Or just someone that stands there and reads notes that I could read on my own time. Fail.
